Zach Top Talks "I Never Lie," Covers, Grammys, and Album ‘Ain’t In It for My Health’

The winner of the inaugural Grammy for Best Traditional Country Album for his third album, ‘Ain’t In It for My Health,’ Zach Top didn’t come up through the usual Nashville machine. Born in Sunnyside, Washington, he was fronting his family’s bluegrass band at seven, dropped out of college in Colorado, posted covers of country legends on Facebook, faced label rejection, and somehow wound up opening for his hero George Strait.

We talk about keeping traditional country alive in a modern industry, the tension between career ambition and settling down, heartbreak, touring, virality, and whether success changes your relationship with the art itself. Plus: cold plunging, getting home schooled, building houses, making swords, ‘Lord of the Rings,’ and so much more.
