Affirmations are one of the oldest tools in personal development, and most people dismiss them because they misunderstood what an affirmation actually is.
In this episode, I share the distinction that changed the practice for me, that we are all affirming all day long, and that “nothing ever works out for me” is just as much an affirmation as anything you say in the mirror.
We’ll explore the neuroscience and the metaphysics of the power of speech, the work of Louise Hay, and why your own voice penetrates the subconscious mind in a way nobody else’s can.
Discover the six word affirmation I use almost every day to calm my nervous system, and a simple seven day challenge to become intentional about what you’re declaring to be true.

David: 00:00

There's a technique in personal development as old as the hills and so simple that most people dismiss it. And yet, whether you realize it or not, you're using it every single day. The problem is, you're probably using it to keep yourself in the same financial struggle, the same relationship patterns, and the same fear over and over and over again. And if there's anything I would call a silver bullet in personal growth, I think it's this practice. And I'm talking about affirmations. Now, I know you're probably thinking, but, Dave, I've heard about affirmations. I've done affirmations. My life still has not changed. And I get it. That's how I felt for a long, long time. In fact, I got to a place where affirmations were just plain irritating. Until I realized I'd misunderstood what an affirmation actually was. And that misunderstanding meant I could spend 15 minutes in the morning affirming the life that I wanted to and the rest of the day unconsciously affirming the life that I didn't. So today we're going to unpack the neuroscience and the metaphysics of the power of speech. We're going to draw on the wisdom of Louise Hay, who helped bring affirmations into the mainstream. And I'm going to share a powerful six word affirmation that I use almost every single day, which has become one of the most powerful tools for calming my nervous system. So let's get into it.

Welcome to A Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most. From the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth, to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture, and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools, and timeless wisdom, um, inspiring you to create real, lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity and doom and gloom so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy, and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to A Changed Mind. All right, guys.

You can't talk about affirmations without mentioning Louise Hay. Her book, Heal youl Life, has sold over 50 million copies. Holy cow, think about that. This woman overcame a lot. Childhood abuse, cancer. She introduced millions of people to the idea that changing the way that you speak to yourself can change the way that you live. And what I love about her story is that this wasn't somebody whose life had been easy, telling everybody else to think positively. Here was a woman who had experienced tremendous difficulty, yet she turned it around to teach people that they could develop a more loving relationship with themselves. Now, when I found her work, I was kind of sort of open to it. I wanted to believe that there was something to affirmations, but they also felt a little woo woo. I mean, when you don't have any money in your bank account, how do you say money flows easily to me? Like, when you've got pain in your body, how can it be helpful to say, I'm healthy, I'm vibrant, and I'm feeling alive? Or if you've got no success to point to around you, how do you say I'm successful in all ways on all days? Like, even the rhyming of affirmations irritated me. That's a sign for where I was years ago. I mean, I started actually getting angry at affirmations. Uh, so the reason why it was frustrating was it felt like I was faking it. And maybe you've experienced that too. Like, you try to say something positive, but it just makes you more aware of the distance between what you're saying and what you're actually experiencing in your reality. And now you're frustrated with the affirmations and you're frustrated with yourself. It's like, man, I even suck at this affirmation thing. But here's the distinction I want to share. And it changed how I understood the whole practice. I thought affirmations were something that I was trying to start practicing, but I hadn't realized how much affirming, uh, I was already doing. Because we are affirming all day long. To affirm something by definition is to declare something to be true. So an affirmation doesn't have to be positive. Nothing ever works out for me is an affirmation. My body hurts is an affirmation. I'm tired is an affirmation. People always let you down is an affirmation. Now, you might call those observations. Maybe that's true. But if you keep observing, I'm, um, broke. I'm, um, broke. I'm, um, broke. Do you think that person will ever get out of financial insecurity? You're taking a moment in time and turning it into a declaration about your life. And you don't even have to speak affirmations out loud. You can repeat them internally. You can rehearse the same conversation while you're driving or while you're in the shower or while you're lying in bed. So affirmations are the things that we repeatedly declare to be true in our speech and in our inner dialogue. And when you keep rehearsing that future, it can start to feel like the only future that's available to you now. Uh, the brain is a goal achieving machine. So what you affirm influences how you feel. And how you feel influences what you do. And what you do obviously influences the results that you produce. And then your results reaffirm the affirmation in the first place. So what most people are doing on the regular is affirming their limiting beliefs. They're affirming their lack. They're affirming their scarcity. And that's why the power of speech is so important, because sometimes it's hard to catch what you're thinking. We have over 6,000 thoughts a day. You're thinking while you're doing, but we can catch what we speak. You know, I was in a period of time recently where I noticed the words I was speaking were about things that I didn't like. I guess you would call it complaining. And in some ways, complaining is a way to socialize the negative emotion and the negative thoughts inside of us to either get somebody else to buy into it and start to enroll them into it, or to get somebody to say, hey, it's okay, I know you feel that way, like, let's solve this problem. But that's not what it's actually doing. What it's doing is perpetuating those things that you're speaking negatively about. So we can catch our speech and we can change our speech much easier than we can catch and change our thoughts. So your words are a powerful level to access change, and they are the leading indicator of what you are creating and in your reality. And this is why in Scripture it says, death and life are in the power of the tongue. Right? So there's no complicated framework here, which is the nice thing about affirmations. It's just becoming aware when you speak something that doesn't feel good. You know, we teach that there are two states of being, primal states and powerful states. A primal state is a state of being that doesn't feel good. Stress, anxiety, overwhelm, anger, boredom. In a powerful state is a state of being that feels good. And one way to look at personal growth is to train your nervous system to operate as consistently as possible from a powerful state. Because it's from a powerful state that you'll create what you want to create in your life. So we want to notice when we're speaking words that don't feel good, words that are not coherent or aligned with being in a powerful state. Coherent is a really good word. It's like we're sitting there just complaining and babbling to ourselves. That's what an incoherent person does, like a crazy person. That's what we do with these negative affirmations. So we notice, and we don't need to do anything sophisticated with what we notice. We can actually just stop speaking those words. You're choking off the oxygen to these negative belief systems. You're no longer continuing to speak them or entertain them. And over time, you begin by default of removing the negative talk, speaking more of the things that are positive thinking, speaking more of the things that feel good. That becomes the retraining process. Changing what you affirm begins to prune the neurons that represent the old habit of thought and the old belief systems. And it begins to nurture new aspects of your brain and your nervous system that represent empowered thoughts and perspectives. This is how you build a nervous system conducive to creating the reality that you want. This is how you shift from your old identity and those old limiting beliefs and programs and traumas to a new one. So without effort, you find yourself just starting to acknowledge other people, to acknowledge yourself, to acknowledge life. Wow, what a beautiful day. Oh, it feels good to be alive. How wonderful this thing that happened. Thank you. I'm grateful. That's what happens, simply by eliminating the negative talk. As I started getting into affirmation work, not only was I beginning to become more present and aware to what I was actually speaking, but at one point I actually carved out time to go for an affirmation walk. Most days outdoors, I'd like to do it barefoot in the grass, around the neighborhood, walk in nature, get some sunshine. And I would do a 15 minute affirmation walk. I just take a break from working in my day, and I'd go outside, I'd do the walk. And I wrote about 20 affirmations on a little notepad on my phone that were the opposite of the limiting beliefs and the complaining that I had been practicing. And I walked around the neighborhood reading my affirmations. And at first it did feel a little bit like I was faking it, but once I got into the practice, it started to settle in and it started to feel real. I just needed to work through that initial resistance. And it makes sense. I mean, if you aren't sick, but you walk around saying, I'm sick all day, Long. Eventually you're probably not going to feel very well. But then the opposite must be true. If you're willing to ignore your current situation or how you feel today and instead start denying that reality and declaring that you feel good over time, that should also become your reality. I mean, why, why would it work in one direction, but not both? So I do these affirmation walks, and eventually I didn't even need to look at my phone anymore. I just kind of started saying them off of my subconscious programming. They just became second nature. And then it became sort of like this chanting. Uh, like I would go around the neighborhood chanting. People probably thought I looked like, uh, a. I was a crazy man talking to myself. But the reality is that we're all crazy people talking to ourselves all day long, so what's the big deal? And one of the most powerful incantations for me, which I borrowed from Louise Hay, was all is well and I am safe. All is well and I am safe. Because I realized so much of my day I was spending in this feeling of unsafety. I felt unsafe in my business, unsafe in my body, unsafe in my relationship, unsafe in life, unsafe with my bank account. And a lot of the complaining and the negative speech was a sideways way of expressing like, hey, I'm afraid over here. So I really started to anchor this idea that every single moment is perfect because this moment is God's will for me, and God is good. So whatever shows up, even in the challenge, it must be perfect. All is well and I am safe. And that was really starting to downregulate my nervous system, along with some other practices like working directly on my limiting beliefs, listening to positive things throughout the day, surrounding myself with positive people, getting into nervous system stabilization work like breath work, or even just getting in a hard workout every single day. My nervous system started to down regulate. And as my nervous system stabilized, that, uh, feeling of safety became a reality for me. The other thing to consider here around affirmations is how your own voice penetrates the subconscious mind. So a lot of what we're talking about here is transforming your beliefs, working with the belief systems and the habits of thought that have penetrated into the subconscious mind. We call them programs. And transforming those subconscious programs so that your new beliefs and your new thoughts and your new way of being become automatic. One of the most powerful ways to do that is to hear your own voice. Because if someone else says something to you, you may or may not agree with it. Like, what someone else says has to go through the filters of your conscious mind. Do I agree with this? Do I disagree with this? But when you say something, you believe it a hundred percent of the time, right? Uh, that's why I also suggest recording your affirmations and listening to them. That's one of the practices that we give people in our mind hack courses. We help them identify their limiting beliefs and make new powerful decisions. Is to record yourself affirming your new beliefs and your new reality and to listen to that while you're at the gym, on the way to work or in the morning. Because what you say to yourself is really powerful. And we can take the strategies that we've been unconsciously implementing that are, uh, reinforcing our limiting beliefs and we can consciously utilize them to create and install new powerful belief systems. So here's my really simple invitation. Okay. Doesn't require any extra time. It is a seven day challenge to be more aware of what you're affirming, of the words that you're speaking. And when you catch yourself speaking something negative, no big deal, don't beat yourself up or go, geez, there I go again. It's a habit. And that's totally normal. But notice and then stop. If you catch yourself mid sentence, stop mid sentence. Just become aware of what you're speaking and get off that thought train. You can still continue to think the thought if you want to. That's hard to stop. But stop speaking it. Choke off the weeds and see how that builds a new habit not only in terms of what you speak, but what you think seven days from now. Because the truth is, we're affirming all day long. And now you have the opportunity to become intentional around those affirmations.
