The Coat on Laura's Pond: No Footprints, Just Questions
A dark green, double-breasted wool coat was found lying perfectly flat on the ice of Bellham Mill Pond on January 9, 1983 - thirty feet from the bank, sleeves extended, brass buttons fastened, with no footprints approaching or leaving the frost around it. The same pond is called Laura's Pond after Laura Becker, who drowned there in January 1864 and whose body was recovered without an outer garment; how did a coat end up on the ice 119 years later with no tracks, and why did records quietly change the cause of death 137 years after the fact?
In this episode, we present the documented sequence of discoveries, inquest records, and later archival finds that connect a missing coat, a nineteenth-century drowning, and a twentieth-century curiosity. Follow the evidence from the farmhouse where Roy Kowalski first reported the coat to the Kellen County Historical Society display, and ask whether the newly amended death record truly resolves the lingering questions.
Person: Roy Kowalski
Date: January 9, 1983
Location: Bellham Mill Pond (called Laura's Pond)
Person: Laura Becker
Date: January 1864
- The coat found on the ice was dark green wool, double-breasted with brass buttons, laid flat approximately 30 feet from the bank.
- Roy Kowalski, age 14, stood at the fence for about two minutes before going to the nearest farmhouse to report the coat.
- The constable documented no footprints on the frost-film surrounding the coat - none approaching, retreating, or on the bank.
- Laura Becker, born autumn 1839, was 24 years old when her body was recovered from the pond on January 14, 1864; medical assessment estimated she had been in the water 4-8 days.
- A coat folded inside its lining was found 139 years later by retired schoolteacher Earl Underwood, and the original death record was reclassified in 2001 to read "circumstances undetermined, inquest findings insufficient."
