The Judge's Portrait That Refused to Face the Town

A dead circuit lit a window at a.m. on February 14, 2009, and a marginal note in a utility report led an archivist to a nine-year-old burial squeezed into the edge of a church register from October 17, 1958 - why would a town keep a judge’s portrait turned to the wall for decades? What happened on Pear Street that autumn, and who decided a face should never be seen?

In this episode, we follow what the surviving records actually contain: service logs, court dockets, an eleven-week gap in a judge’s record, a sealed inquest file, and a housekeeper’s testimony - and we ask whether the documents themselves can explain the town’s silence and the portrait’s placement.
