The Lantern That Kept Returning to a Woman No One Could Bury

Fear and curiosity grip Dellrow when a tin lantern manufactured in the 1930s, still warm and smelling of smoke, is found hanging at Ridgeback Cut - on a trail that had been officially closed for six weeks. Who kept tending a nearly century-old lamp at the crossroads tied to a woman whose death left no inquest, no marked grave, and only a cryptic eight-word notice?

In this episode, we trace the objects, documents, and local memories that tether a community to an erased life. What does a warm lantern, decades of constable log entries, and a cemetery ledger that points to an empty plot tell us about the ritual Dellrow quietly preserved around Linda Boyd?

Person: Linda Boyd
Date: June 1923
Location: eastern timber road / Ridgeback Cut crossroads
Population: 940 (Dellrow, 2019)
Finder: Vernon Porter

- The lantern was found on the morning of June 3, 2019, hanging from a low oak branch at Ridgeback Cut.
- The lamp was a pressed-tin lantern with a perforated lid and twisted-wire bail, made sometime in the 1930s, with bright bail wire and no rust.
- The candle inside had burned to within 1 centimeter of the base and the wick trailed a thread of smoke; the metal was faintly warm when lifted.
- Linda Boyd arrived in Dellrow in spring 1921 at age 26, worked as a seamstress, and volunteered at the welfare distribution office by August 1921.
- The Dellrow Courier printed an eight-word death notice: "Accident sustained near the eastern timber road," and the cemetery ledger lists a plot number that corresponds to no marked grave.
