Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're 60% G, 100% of the time.
I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm here in the Chris.
Wesseling podcast studio with 12.5% G herself, Rodrigue.
I'm Jordan.
You know, when we were in Paris, I was referring to you as 60% weak.
Like that.
Did the math.
Rodrigue, eight letters. G, one divided by eight. You know, if you go last name. Rodrigo, how are you feeling coming back from France here? Ready for the week eight preview, by the way.
Yeah, I feel a little bit underwater, which we knew that this was going to get me on the way back. I had no jet lag there. So we knew that it was it was going to bite me in the butt on the way back.
But I feel good. Like we're halfway through pretty much.
And well, you know, 18 divided by two would mean at the end of next week, We'll be exactly halfway through the NFL season.
I'm just saying, look, week eight came strong.
The lineup is better than it's been all season in terms of the early games. That's what this particular show covers. The 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern games. There's no international game this week. We'll take a week off from that. And to give you some juice, you know, coming off that long plane ride, we wanted to give you some joy.
And Who better to inspire us for a show topic than a man who's on a buy right now?
It's John Harbaugh.
That whole moment, Tom, you know, that's what it's funny because we talked about with our team, we talked about football joy and we talked about playing with joy. And what is football joy? It's different than other kinds of joy. You know, there's different kinds of joy. There's all kinds of different kinds of joys. You know, when you get married, you have kids or, or I don't know, you win the lottery.
There's a lot.
Of different kinds of joys, but, But football joy is different.
It's kind of gritty.
It's kind of tough.
It's fierce.
And that was a football joy moment. That was a football joy moment. That's why we do it. I think that's why the fans love it and love to watch it and be a part of it.
Talking about that great ending to the Giants-Texans game, really well explained there by John Harbaugh. So we're going to ask the question, what is bringing us some football joy in each one of these matchups. I will start with the Ravens and the Bills. The Bills are three and a half point favorites. This is an Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker game. How about Ross Tucker getting Josh Allen versus Lamar Jackson? How about CBS getting this in the early window? Weird, but I like it. This was a great week to have, I was going to say the number one pick in our games draft, but this actually went number two to Nick Shook.
Great value here.
What is bringing me joy, even though We don't know for sure if Lamar Jackson's going to be back this week. He was practicing even a little more, you know, when they showed him in terms of the video this week. But no matter who's been at quarterback, Zay Flowers playing like his absolute best self and moving around, I think in a like more sudden, fluid way than he's ever moved before. And he's always obviously been an incredible mover.
But you kind of forget sometimes that four or five-year veterans do continue to improve sometime. And it is next level. His stop to start is electric right now. He has 600 yards and in six games, there are fewer deep routes down the field, but there's also a lot fewer, according to NGS plays designed for him near or behind the line of scrimmage. So it's a lot of intermediate routes and whether it's Tyler Huntley or Lamar Jackson out there, he's been getting it done. I personally, have been thinking about whether the Ravens want to add.
A pass catcher.
But look, their offense was cooking with Tyler Huntley for about half the game last week. And they have Jacoby Lane back. They have Josh Cuevas back. And they're facing a team in Buffalo. that has the second lowest pressure rate in the league. So if you can get Lamar back, uh, Z flowers is a matchup problem for everyone, but I just love the way he is playing and kind of playing at a level. I don't know if many people ever really thought he.
Could get to.
Yeah. The, the thing that you point out that I thought was great here is the fact that he's so much more involved in the intermediate layers of this passing game that speaks toward a coaching staff and a, you know, offensive system in general that, uh, has determined he will be their volume target.
And he is.
The numbers back that up, and certainly the play on the field backs it up. But when you put a player who, I think in some ways, when he came out, was thought, okay, maybe he's a guy who can take the top off the defense, which he can, or maybe he's a guy who you're going to use a lot of screens and reverses and all these different things, which he can. But when you move him into this type of role, you are dedicating that to mismatches on linebackers, mismatches on safeties, mismatches on any time corners rotate down.
And that is absolutely where he's thriving right now. I really hope we get Lamar Jackson throwing the ball to him.
I think we will just because of the reporting of how close Lamar Jackson was and that they were surprised. Only Lamar Jackson really knows, but they showed him, like I said, at practice. And it's looked like he is doing more on Wednesdays. other injury things to watch for this game. No Kyle Hamilton at practice. He was not even in uniform. He got hurt late in that game last week. That is great news for the Buffalo Bills.
Not great news if you love Defensive Player of the Year candidates. And then on the other side, just covering the injury situations. DJ Moore is expected to return this week. We'll see if Ed Oliver, who's missed five games this year and returned, if you remember, for one and then got hurt again, returns. I have a feeling he will be back. So the Bills coming off a bye week.
Is there anything you expect to see maybe a little differently out of them than what we saw before?
Well, I mean, yes and no, because I expect this offense to look a lot more like it looked in those first couple of games of the season when DJ Moore was healthy and on the field. And you know what I think is great for the Bills despite this and some of the clunkiness that they have just demonstrated previous to the bye in their passing game specifically is that Keon Coleman has taken a step forward. So now you have to find ways to compliment him into the mix with DJ Moore. I really, really liked what I saw from this offense with DJ Moore in the field.
And I think the combination of DJ Moore, Josh Allen, trying to get Kincaid, you know, back to the production that he was enjoying, getting Keon Coleman in the mix, building layers into this passing game.
I have no qualms or issues with their run game whatsoever. I think it's awesome.
And building this in, especially potentially facing a no Kyle Hamilton game, who was going to be that, you know, intermediate receiver neutralizer, plus maybe the Josh Allen run on the ground, you know, eyes on him, spy, maybe the neutralizer there.
Give them different pressure looks to dictate to the Bills.
I think that if the Bills can actually show that they can bring this version of their offense back that they had at the start of the year, they're going to be cooking the rest of the way.
It's tough.
The Ravens are still trying to figure out who they are. And I do think some of the concern about them, it just comes down to if Lamar Jackson had played these.
two and a half games.
Yeah.
You know, like I know they would have. I know people probably would have beat the Browns and everything. But the defense is is partly where I think you want to see some growth. There are a lot of good players there. Brooklyn Smith was out of practice on Wednesday, too. And they're mediocre right now. And and that's not what you expect out of a Jesse Minner defense for them to actually take a step back so far this season.
And this is an ultimate test against Josh Allen, who right now is operating in in terms of play action. And he's always a high play action quarterback, but right now it is a career high rate, second highest in the league.
Ooh, I love that as a cheat code that the fun thing about this matchup is like, it can go all the way into the fourth quarter. We might still not know what this game's going to look like. And the Ravens unfortunately have showed that they can't hold. And that's where I think, I do think that people are a little bit out on them, maybe more so than they should be. We have to get Lamar Jackson back into this offense to really make a full assessment of what this actually is going to be. And it was glorious when he was in the lineup. And I think that they're out on them. You know, I can understand the vibes are weird. They are weird and sort of sour.
And you got players talking about how they have to be better leaders. And Derek Henry is at the lectern, like talking about how he's got to, you know, step up in his leader. And I'm like, when you're getting leadership questions before the middle of the season, mathematically speaking, I don't know.
That's I don't like it. I don't like that.
Derek Henry hasn't been great.
Again, it's a force multiplier when Lamar Jackson is out in terms of the running game.
Derek Henry.
Keep an eye on him in terms of. passing potentially both Jerome Bettis and LaDainian Tomlinson, I think for sixth in the all-time rushing yardage. If he gets 88 yards, he will pass both those two great backs.
And I think he can do it.
And this is a premier matchup because of the history of these two teams. We talked about a lot in the offseason.
They're so similar.
They statistically over the last five years are the two greatest teams of at all time that haven't made a Super Bowl. And it's not recency bias. You can go out back and look at all the numbers. Teams that have been this good year after year after year for like a five-year stretch at least get to the big dance and it's a huge matchup. The Bills can really take charge of potentially going for that one seed and the division if they can go ahead and get this win.
It's a good spot for them and the Ravens looking for a win to hang their hat on.
Looking forward to it.
Let's go to the matchup that Jordan did take first overall.
And look, I don't hate it. It's fascinating.
It's the Vikings at the Lions. The Lions are three and a half point favorites. So in Vegas, I do find this interesting. And it's a Kevin Burkhardt, Tom Brady game. So we got the big hitters in the early morning window. Vegas is essentially saying in both these games, the Bills are a little better than the Ravens.
It's not just the home field. The Bills are a little better. I agree.
It's interesting here that they're also saying it's not just the home field. The Lions are a little bit better than the Vikings. We'll get to whether you agree with that or not. But first, what brings you joy?
Yeah, I mean, I think you probably knew why I picked this game in the first place. I'm kind of capitalizing on this crescendo that the Lions seem to have right now, getting their players back.
That's a small element of this.
We heard earlier today that Brian Branch is also going to be back. Excuse me, that Kirby Joseph is also going to be back.
Brian Branch practicing.
It sounds like he's probably some weeks away from playing, but it's great that he's back at practice.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's what I was going to say is he's back at practice. And so getting those guys healthy and then the defense playing better.
Anyway, all of that is exciting.
But what really brings me joy about this game in general is the Vikings defense being the best defense in the league as it is. And Greg, I know you like to give me a ton of grief about being a fan of coaching. You even act like being a fan of coaching means that a person cannot be a fan of playing.
No, I just like to give you a little grief, just like you do about how I'm short every show.
You know, it's like one each.
It's just, to me, the thing that brings me so much joy about this matchup is it is the exact example of when Apex Coaching meets players who are truly empowered and to bring this to life tactically. And when I spent some time last summer with Josh Metellus at Vikings camp, he took me through how they design this defense, how they draw players up on the whiteboard.
They're all a series of.
X's meaning they move around a ton and it's just this really creative and collaborative process. And it was really clear with all of that movement, how much elite communication it takes. They're given a few plays every snap. And that's pretty that's pretty rare in history of the league that the safeties or the green dot player linebacker, whoever's in the dot and that game is given multiple play calls to decide then what is best for the defense at large based on their look. Normally they're given one, maybe a secondary call. These guys are given it all and basically said. told by Brian Flores, you do what you feel right in this moment. And the result for that is an incredibly cool, energizing partnership. That's what it
looks like when coaching tactics and talent meets player tactics and talent and the team build meets it where it's at as well with the types of players they have.
It is a beautiful thing.
And going against Jared Goff over the last couple of years has been really problematic for Jared Goff who is playing some of his best football right now in week nine in 2025, the Vikings won the lions drew a 47.6 pressure rate by the Vikings. Jared Goff was sacked five times, completed just six of his 15 past tense for 71 yards when pressured. Notably Jameer Gibbs really struggled in past protection that game.
Week 17 and 2025 Vikings won again.
The Lions had just a 29.7% offensive success rate and six turnovers, which were the highest in the Dan Campbell era. All of that to say, I just think these two timelines between Brian Flores and Jared Goff, these player and coach who have been linked from afar over time, team changes and scheme changes and all of these things, their story is not over yet. And I would expect Drew Petzing and Jared Goff to try to have some answers for this, at least in spots where they can try to move the ball down the field. It's strength on strength in this game. And that's why I picked it.
And that's what brings me joy.
It's awesome.
First in scoring defense versus the second in scoring offense. Now, it's a big time test of how much as exciting and look, the Vikings are.
On another planet.
They're the most fun defense to watch. They have had the second easiest schedule in the league for defenses so far. And we're going to find out like like they're obviously a great defense. Can they be a historic defense that also takes down good offenses in 2026? The next four weeks are outrageous in terms of the schedule. Like they might not be favored in any of their next four games.
I think it's the Jake. I got I got to go look. It's the Packers. I believe after it's the Bills after this, then at Packers and then at 49ers. So basically three of the toughest offenses in the league. Obviously, the Packers have some weaknesses and I'm fascinated to see. I'm glad you brought up the history because I think that matters so much. And it's great context because the Lions won the first four matchups of this battle between Flores and Jacksonville. Goff yet in the in the middle season, like the defense started playing better. They started sacking Goff.
They started forcing some turnovers. But the Lions won those two. The Lions blew the doors off them a couple of years ago in Florida's first year. And so it'll be really fascinating to kind of see where they're at now, because it does feel like the Vikings defense in their fullest form. and also a better Lions offense than we saw last year.
And I love to see that, that, you know, I like what you said Tuesday on the Tuesday show with, with Colleen, where you were talking about like getting excited about the Lions because it took them a minute to kind of put things all together and the defense, their defense has been the biggest story of that team so far this year. But that's why I think this is strength on strength, because I think the Lions are fully realized in this form. And I think that they're, it takes a minute for any scheme wrinkles and, you know, everything to kind of get into place. I think they're getting the Vikings and vice versa at such a perfect time to not only have this be a great game, at least in those phases, because I still am not
buying the Vikings offense and I think they need to trade for a running back. But, To be like, basically, they will learn so much about what they still need to be in order to get over the hump of like beating this team and positioning themselves in this what will be a playoff race.
I love it.
It in if the Vikings could somehow pull off a road victory here after they already beat the other two teams in the division earlier this season. I mean, they'd have a stranglehold. on this division and potentially the one seed. But they're still the 30th offense right now in the NFL. In terms of throws, and I heard this on Purple Daily, over 10 yards, Kyler Murray is dead last in terms of EPA per play. They are first in special teams.
They're first in defense, 30th in offense. Let's listen to Kevin O'Connell talk about the weird stew that is the Vikings.
We're a team now that people are trying to figure out, and it's not always... Really exciting to figure out not turning the ball over, time of possession, you know, being a very minimally penalized team. A lot of things that probably don't warrant a lot of advertising dollars. And I understand that. But at the same time, I see what I see on the film and the things that I need to fix where I can be better and our players can be better. And that's what we're trying to do, knowing we've got a heck of a stretch out in front of us, starting with one of the best teams in football in our division on the road this week.
It's so funny.
He's like, remember, I am still the head coach and I helped make all of these other things possible to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Right.
He looks so beleaguered for an undefeated coach because he's getting a lot of heat nationally.
He's trying to point out what's good about the offense.
And I do agree with him when I watch their passing game on Saturday. tape every week I'm always a little surprised I don't think it looks as bad as the numbers no would say but they are a function of Kyler Murray who's kind of developed into a boring quarterback the last three or four years nobody pushes the ball down the field less that doesn't really match up with what Kevin O'Connor likes to do he doesn't turn the ball over at all like it's It's a little Aaron Rodgers. He hasn't been running nearly as much. He did have one great run last week, which was nice to see, but they're not getting JJ involved. Justin Jefferson, he's making his hundredth start. And I saw this stat that he is third all time in receiving yards entering,
you know, his hundredth start behind Julio Jones and Lance Allworth. Great, great company there. Shout out to Lance Allworth and just ahead of Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss. But like, He produces way better when Carson Wentz is in there. They're, by the way, trying to set an all-time record. A lot of numbers here, and we do have to move on.
But I do want to ask you a quiz.
It's your favorite. This is a recent one. I love when you do this.
Okay.
They will set the all-time NFL record with an 11-game winning streak. The longest winning streak when you've had four different quarterbacks during the winning streak.
Who are the four quarterbacks?
Max Brosmer. Carson Wentz.
Yes.
J.J.
McCarthy.
Yes.
Kyler. There you go. Brosner was the hard one. And you had that right off the top.
Awful decision. Wait, I do have, I'm sorry. I know, but one, one tiny thing.
Sure.
It's a hostile environment.
Kevin O'Connell mentioned it going into Detroit.
Thank you. Nice one, Eric.
Uh, I hear that sometimes when I just like see his name on it, like a ticker or something. Um, the, the hostile environment of, of, uh, going into Detroit, obviously that is, that is such an advantage. If you've ever been there, it like fills up your bones and your cells. Like you can, you just, you can't not hear it for like days afterward. And you have to be quiet.
Obviously when your offense is on the field and Jared Goff is, is working, that is such a hidden sneaky advantage for the Vikings defense too, that you have to be quiet when the offense is on the field, because like I just.
Said, they're getting multiple calls. to adjust to what they're doing.
And that takes communication to each other.
So it's like, you know, double-edged sword here.
You get, you let Jared Goff go to work inside and the, and the quiet and the calm, but you're also handing the Vikings defense advantage there. Yeah.
It'll be interesting to see how Kyler handles this situation because the Lions defense, I love this stat from Colton Patterson.
Your colleague at the athletic. I couldn't believe this is true.
Since he joined the team, the Lions are third in success rate when Brian branches on the field. This was going into last week, but it should only be more dramatic. They are 30th in the NFL when he's not.
And they were awesome last week.
That was my biggest takeaway going back to watch that game because I watched part of it live on the plane ride home. They competed. They played really great. 35% success rate for the Packers last week. They were a different defense. Can they back it up?
We'll see. All right. We will speed up the rest of these games.
But the one more that will give a little bit of time is Brown Steelers, which will be my game. I'm taking the Browns game away from Shook because he left it out there. And this is a game between two five and two teams trying to get into first place. another three and a half point line. So it's just saying that the Steelers are just a little bit better than the Browns on a neutral field, which is an interesting thought.
I think they might be better than that. We'll see.
They're coming back from Paris. That's a tough spot. Kevin Harlan, Trent Green on the call. The development of the Browns rookie Casey Concepcion is what is giving me football joy.
For this game. I love this kid.
I love hearing him talk at the podium, which makes it even greater and just talking to Browns fans about how he felt like he hadn't been able to express himself and then be able to see what kind of player he was until this last week. But it's like, I can see it, man. He plays with an energy and a toughness for his size. That is outrageous. A really unique skillset that he has jaw dropping speed and movement, but incredible toughness for his size. It stood out so much in the draft process. I, he was my wide receiver too, in the draft behind Tate and, And man, like the way they got him involved last week got me excited for the first time in a while about, OK, these young guys are actually showing up in the way
like we've been listing their names off. But Quincy Jenkins has looked poor all year. I don't know if it was the bye week. He looked like a different player last week. Dylan Sampson comes back. He had a lot of juice, added some juice to that backfield. And then their tight end, Harold Fannin, who's been silent for a month, had a bunch of big plays. So we know they are good young talent, but we hadn't really seen them emerge.
And last week they did it against Tennessee. I think there's a lot of mismatches against a Steelers secondary that's had their issues. And If you can unlock Concepcion, I think it unlocks the whole Browns offense.
Yeah, I'm glad you went there because I think it's a huge mismatch. If you're talking pure passing, not even talk, not talking about pressure yet, because that will be a factor. But if you're talking about the pure pass game, one, you know, matchups of DBs and receivers and also like the layers and construct of what the Browns passing game can be with Todd Munkin and these.
Great skill players.
It is such a problem for a Steelers defense that does their best work around the line of scrimmage and does their best work in the very shorter areas, the flats, the areas of the field where they're not straining, A, some of their older legs like Jalen Ramsey's, and B, asking too much of young players who they've kind of continued to rotate through. So for me, that is one of the biggest mismatches in this game is purely the passing constructs and the skills against those. Now, I do think Patrick Graham... And the Steelers front is going to really bother Deshaun Watson.
Yeah, it's a great test for where Watson's at.
You know, I saw like an article trying to make the case for him as comeback player of the year. And I'm thinking, A, coming back from what? Like sexual assault allegations. B, he's not playing that well. The one half where he was electric was against the Steelers. And so this is an early rematch. That was a Thursday night football game where I thought both offenses, even though Rodgers made some big mistakes in that game, played pretty high level. But overall, Watson, 25th in PFF's grades, 27th in QBR, 19th and 20th in EPA per play and defensive yards over replacement.
So in the Kind of advanced stats.
He's closer to average because I think they're counting the running a little more. 29th in completion percentage, over-expected. Now, he has had an incredible knack, and this team has real confidence. When they get the ball late in games, they go win the games. I mean, it's happened time and time again, so you've got to be worried about that.
And his offensive line is coming together.
Again, it was against Tennessee?
Tennessee.
Whose defense stinks, but man, they had some great push. This is an offensive line that was thrown together from five different places, a couple of rookies, and they've been okay last year.
They were dominant last week.
And so if they can be good on the ground and pass protection, this will be a big test for them to do so against Pittsburgh. But then you can give Watson the time because it takes him a while to process.
It's like a sundial back there.
So are we going to start labeling him as like a system quarterback or are we just going to keep having to hear about these bullshit pieces by the broadcast?
He is definitely helped out by the system. And look, there's a world where he gets more comfortable. I just don't think he's there now, Watson, in terms of getting rid of the ball quickly enough. And so, yeah, that could be a problem against the Browns. Against the Steelers. Against the Steelers, really. Efficiency-wise... you know, DBOA would say this is a mismatch ninth right now. My, uh, my Pittsburgh Steelers, I'm calling them my.
I love, I love how far around you've come on this team.
I did have them in the playoffs before the year. So it is a little bit of confirmation bias. 21st, just to finish the point on the Browns, they have the Browns as kind of like a team that shouldn't really be five and two. I, I, I have this theory about why I like the Steeler.
I know why you like them. They're fun to watch and they're producing really well. And they're, they're fun schematically. The things that they do are interesting. I kind of like them because I just think they're like a like a cranky old guy team and like big in their feelings. And I just like, they're just like the old man yells at cloud, but like in a productive way, I just, they're, they, they've got this edge to.
Them where it's like, ah, my back hurts. My knees hurt. I'm angry at the world. And I'm going to go throw 51 yard pass to DK Metcalf.
They're kind of like a bunch of old, really popular sitcom characters who are no longer in the show that made them famous.
They're in like the next show, but then you're like, Hey, it's actually pretty good.
Yeah.
It's still really good. It's Frazier.
You know, you cannot get swept by the Browns. They're coming back from Paris. This is a sneaky, huge game for Pittsburgh because you get swept by the Browns. These two seasons look very different in Cleveland, man. You have to take them seriously. If they can go ahead and pull off the sweep. Let's talk about the team who had the biggest win in the division last week. It was the Cincinnati Bengals, 10 and a half point favorites against the aforementioned Tennessee Titans.
Titans.
Tom McCarthy, Robert Turbin, and our friend Tiffany Blackman in this game. What's giving you joy here?
Yeah, it's the familiar and yet sometimes untrustworthy feeling of what it looks like when the Bengals really open up their passing game.
That is what's bringing me joy.
Now, I wrote this all down before Jamar Chase was reported to have missed practice on Wednesday.
But here's Joe Burrow.
On throws of 10 plus yards, 47 of 67 with a 70.1% completion rate, the highest by any qualified passer in a season in the next gen stats era. Nine touchdowns and just one interception on downfield passes of that nature.
He's feeling good.
Again, I say somewhat untrustworthy because I don't know how much I can always believe it. Things always do seem to come up.
With this team.
But my God, is it fun to watch them really open it up? And I don't think the Titans have answers for this.
No, I don't. The Titans defense is not developing. They're sneaky.
One of the more disappointing groups in the league because they spent so much on their head coach. and all these players, and there's no pass rush. There's no big plays. They're one of the worst, very worst defense in the league. They're hanging Cam Ward a little bit out to dry, although Cam Ward's not.
Helping himself.
The Bengals, I just never know what I'm getting with this team. They showed up out of their buy and they tried to go back to all the under center stuff for like a half. And Tyler, like Tyler Huntley was playing keep away and they played some good situational football or that thing could have been 21, nothing at halftime.
And then they get on the, in the second half and they go touchdown five straight drives. It was a thing to behold. It was incredible what they looked like. And the Jamar Chase thing is weird because he finished that game. He was in the locker room, according to Paul Daner, after practice. So without knowing much, generally, if you finish the game out, you're going to play the next week.
We'll see there. We obviously taped this on Wednesday. So you just... never know.
Regardless, I think they will be fine in this game, particularly. I would like to see them run the ball better. I don't know if that actually happens without bringing in other personnel. And for me, this is where another like sort of subcategory of something that's bringing me joy comes into play.
This front office is actually.
Doing things and moving in ways that it hasn't since basically it's in years, decades, like in so, so long. And so I think for me, I would expect them personally to be active at the trade deadline because I think they need help in the secondary for sure. And I think they need help, you know, potentially at running back.
Linebacker.
Linebacker would be helpful. And so for me, it's like they've already shown that they're willing to be bold and have that be a part of their identity this season.
I don't know why they would back away from that.
Truly.
Jonathan Taylor, would they go that aggressive?
Oh, that'd be really fun. You know, maybe.
How about Tony Pollard? Tony Pollard, I was.
Trying to remember.
Close view of it right here.
I was going to say they're going to get plenty of tape on him before the trade deadline, too.
Disappointing season for Chase Brown. I think maybe you could get more out of him in a role with a guy like Tony Pollard. I would not give up what it would cost to get Jonathan Taylor if I was the Bengals. Although, look, that Dexter Lawrence trade I thought maybe wouldn't work out as well. And he is the first team All-Pro right now at that position.
He is dominating.
This team so far, the Bengals had faced the sixth hardest schedule in the league so far. Moving forward, it's the fourth easiest. So it gets a lot easier. The chase thing reminds me, by the way, like we've, we've reached week eight here, almost halfway.
Mathematically.
T Higgins has 220 more yards than Jamar chase. I just find that interesting. That hasn't been noted.
Like, like one of the best receivers in the NFL and he's there too. I mean, but this.
Year he's not there too. It's really interesting.
It's never not insane to me that this, I mean, Yeah. And he could be there and he's there one easily if Chase is out.
And he's there one this year.
Like last week was all about Chase going down and picking out mismatches against the Ravens and just doing it.
220 yards is a lot.
It reminds me there was one year in the Hushman Zada, Chad Johnson era. That's as good a one, two as, you know, I've seen just about where Hushman's out of the first half of the year, just like dominated was had some of the best numbers in the league, and then it flipped back around in the second half.
But that's a problem.
What's not good news for the Bengals is Eric All, their tight end, tore his ACL again.
That happened on Sunday. It was confirmed. And bad news there.
That's his third, I think, ACL tear. That's brutal.
It is.
Titans, do something for me. You know, you win a game.
It's the meme of the guy poking the thing with the stick.
Do something.
You almost beat the Browns and you scored 24 points. And I'm thinking, okay, like I'm going to feel better about Cam Ward because I watched that previous Titans game. And it's like, no, they were just hiding him last week. He really didn't do much in that game. He had a couple throws, but they were usually after bad throws.
So I... I want more. I believe in more. You never know. Do something.
Any given Sunday. Let's talk about another team in the AFC South. Another couple of teams after the break when we talk about the Jaguars and the fire sale Indianapolis Colts.
Maybe they'll make a trade before we get back from our break.
Back on NFL Daily talking AFC South where the Jaguars had a great bye week. They got to watch the Texans barf on themselves. They watched the Colts give up on the season and trade away some of their franchise stalwarts. They are nine and a half point favorites this week over those Colts to Spiro Didis, Adam Archuleta game here.
And what's giving me joy is before we get to the cults of it all which doesn't have a lot of joy is uh travis hunter just playing like a true cb1 and yes they got him involved last time out in london more effectively as a receiver he had four catches on like seven routes which is crazy i i expect that to be a minor part of the travis hunter experience but i test and metrics he is performing like a top 10 cornerback it is happening and he's getting better and better every week he doesn't really have uh a legit top receiver to trail in this game.
Although he'd be a tough matchup for Josh Downs when he's on the outside. I'm going to combine my joy, which was Travis Hunter, with just some news here, which let's pivot to the Colts because we talked on Tuesday with Colleen about all the trade aftermath of DeForest Buckner going and Quentin Nilsen going. We kind of talked about it less in what it means for the Colts, more about the teams they were going to. It is crazy to take a step back It feels like we're pretty far into this season, right, Jordan?
Yeah, about halfway, mathematically.
And yet, we're still two weeks away from where we were when the Colts traded for Sauce Gardner, okay? So we're not even to that point in the season yet. They were 7-2 at that point. They won one more with them. They are 3-12 since then. They mortgaged their future for him. They've fired their GM, right? You know, all they get back for two franchise stalwarts is a third, a fourth, and a fifth for Quentin Nelson, DeForest Buckner.
Buckner, I get it. Nelson, it just hurts, you know, for a guy who just.
Great trade if you're Seattle.
Right.
It just hurts, I think, if you're a Colts fan. Josh Downs has now requested a trade. Jonathan Taylor has not. And Shane Steichen said, Wednesday, he's on the team. He will be playing for the team. They're not going to, like, try to sit him or anything.
I do.
I think Carly Gordon Ursae is taking some L's right now. Like she made two mistakes. One, allowing the Saskarner trade to happen. That is way more on Chris Ballard, but they went for it. And that's an organizational decision that I'm sure they regret a little bit. And then keeping Ballard. So they're trying to make it right.
Yeah.
She wanted to see how the movie was going to finish. It finished really poorly. And now they're going to be starting a new movie, which presumably will include a Josh Downs trade, I guess.
I don't know.
Yeah.
I appreciate the context of like you centering that trade more on Ballard. But to be clear, she if she didn't want to do it, I wouldn't have done it. Right. You know, she is involved with this team on a on on every level. So for me, I appreciate it, I think, in the moment of them and the organization in general not being super reactionary despite the bad results.
I think if they came out like they have, that was going to be the trigger point. And as I wrote my column a couple of weeks last week, this is an organization, and her especially, that has spent the last couple of off-seasons... like quietly building a plan of what would happen if they did move on and quiet and not necessarily identifying people specifically, but finding out about other organizations and what kind of infrastructure they want to bring to the Colts. She said to me that she does not want to be, this was last year when I spent some time with them, she said to me, she doesn't, she wants to spend money. They don't want to be the Colts that, uh, just start, you know, kind of the small town team. They want to keep
a small town feel. in their building, but they want to be a big team, a big brand. And so you have to go out and you have to play, you have to get a, you have to have a top front office that's drafting and developing players who, who can be stars. You have to have bonafide stars on this team. You have to go out and invest in those types of things and the process that makes it happen.
So for me, I am so curious about this entire thing. I would love to see Josh Downs go to a team that can just use him and where he'll thrive. I'm happy for some of these players who actually are getting traded so they.
Can go win. Quentin Nelson might be going to the Super Bowl with the Seahawks.
Here's the thing, though.
Who would you rather have for the next five years, Quentin Nelson or Sauce Gardner?
Quentin Nelson, 100%.
It's close.
I'm not as I'm not as decisive as you, but I think I would lean that.
Way, too.
But that's not the equivalence here. So I think that's a little bit of a false equivalence because those things did not happen in tandem.
No.
One was a ultimate result of a like a side effect of the other. But those two things are not. equivalent to each other.
So for me, no, but you also have to think longterm and think like, are we being emotional reactive now? Um, when we could just sign Quentin Nelson longterm, we have a ton of cap space, uh, possibly, you know, like making more mistakes on top of what I think was a mistake in terms of sauce gardener.
Yeah, I think so. I think what they.
I think they had a lot of success and they thought, okay, now it's time to go all in. And then the entire building imploded.
Yeah.
And it started with that Daniel Jones injury. So for me, I can kind of understand the sequence of events here, but they have to basically start clean and start over and say, how are we really going to build this team? What are we really going to build this into? And what kind of strategy are we going to use? Because you can't do the half strategies like they did to end that last season. And I.
Right.
To.
I think they ultimately regret taking the half strategy.
At the end of last season.
Mathematically.
We got to work on which cough button you're pressing on there.
I pressed the cough button.
Just giving you grief. Just give grief.
I pressed the cough button.
I think it was the different one or something like that.
Oh, the one that's damn it. I'm sorry guys. No, I pressed the one to my left.
Damn it.
I'm so sorry. You guys, that's a horrible sound to have in your ear.
You know, one, the first time I was like, Oh, we'll just let it go. We'll cut it. Um, Now we're leaving that all in.
No, I'm sorry.
Hey, sorry, Jaguars fans. Your team is awesome. You're going to win this division, and we're going to talk about this. I'm going to exclusively talk Jaguars on the recap because I assigned myself this game.
We'll see.
We'll see what happens. Let's respond because the Jaguars are living off that blowout win they had over the Patriots for a while, and they did beat the Bengals right after that, although they were out gained in that game. The London trip was a little disappointing, so I want to see the Jaguars return to to the wagon that we saw early in the season. Let's go to a fascinating NFC South game. The Buccaneers favored by two and a half points over the Falcons.
Mark Folliwell.
That's a new name on Fox play by play man with Daryl Johnston. You know, sometimes different guys get in the mix during baseball season. You know, there's a World Series assignments are getting involved. So you'll have a new a new name for this game. Two and a half points would indicate that our friends in Vegas, not our friends.
except for Nate Tice, who lives in Vegas. Would it say these two teams are exactly equal in a neutral field? I think that's about right. I kind of like the Buccaneers. What's giving you joy here?
I love it.
I love an NFC South grimy game. On paper, this one is shaping up to be perfect because I do think that these teams, the Bucs especially over the last week, have grown in their sort of evenness of where they can sort of counter each other quite well. The frisky Falcons, you know, coming off a massive win against Kyle Shanahan's undefeated 49ers. The Bucs absolutely destroying the Panthers despite passing the ball just 11 times. Like all of the weirdness around this is sort of shaping up to be like the quintessentially perfect NFC South game.
I can't wait for it. It's why I picked this game.
I absolutely would have taken it. Baker ball.
Does not keep on throwing, baby.
He's just back there. He's wearing this strange.
contraption of a glove right now.
Have you read about this?
Yes, it's like a Dr.
Doom.
That the Rays medical staff helped put together. I went into that game being like, oh, this is going to be great. Baker's not going to have to do anything. And he didn't really. He did have one crazy Baker play, which could have been a turnover. He had one incredible touchdown throw that he had someone open earlier in the play and then held it forever and made an outrageous throw.
And then otherwise, there wasn't really that much for him to do. If you're watching us on YouTube, you can see that great touchdown that he had. But that game was less of a fluke than I expected it to be because the offensive line, you know, the first drive of the game, Bucky Irving has it, what, seven, eight times?
And they run down the field. The offensive line absolutely dominated. And the thing I want to point out about this game is it's why I like.
The NFL season.
Every week's just successively bigger weight, more importance. And this is a sneaky huge game to me who likes the Bucs. If the Bucs lose this game, you could argue they should be sellers at the deadline. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If they win... They are ahead of the Falcons. So maybe they shouldn't even be sellers because they're not going to be that way. If they win, they're ahead of the Falcons and they're only a half game behind the Panthers and they'll be 2-0 in the division. That was their first division game last week. And with the two wins being against the two teams in front of them, like you could make a pretty strong argument. All they have to do is win this game Sunday. And they're back to not even square run. They might be in the
best position of any of the teams in the division.
This is the Todd Bowles like master plan, but just like juiced up to the gills because it's always the well, I am going to do the most just in my division. And then I will continue to sort of be in place. Aside from all that, I think that we've talked about.
The Falcons a ton. I want to talk about the Bucks just a little bit here.
The way that the bucks defended the top two receivers, Ted McMillan and Jalen Coker. It was really interesting, simple in theory, but very hard to pull off bracketing them for the most part. And then every other player on the field was asked to basically win a one-on-one matchup and then their front had to get home, which they did.
And yes, the Panthers offensive line.
Was dealing and is dealing with some, some crazy situations, but this was something that was super, super effective. The thing that they'll have to worry about obviously is you can't necessarily bracket a player like Bajon Robinson in the passing game where he was super effective last week against the 49ers.
So.
The Bucs defense, to me, is very capable of stopping the run. They are playing like one of the best defenses in the NFL, top 10 defense for sure over the last couple of weeks. Their secondary is coming more to life in a way that I was worried that maybe it wouldn't. And I think that this group actually has the players and the tools to force the Falcons to pass the ball and then play coverage similar to how they did against the Panthers last week.
Jacob Parrish is on my... watch list for all pro he is playing that well. Uh, and if you think about the matchup, maybe for him in this game, like if it's him and Drake London, that could be fascinating. Maybe it's him, uh, and Kyle pits. Sometimes obviously they get creative with, with how they want to approach it.
I thought Michael Penix showed some good progress last week with in breakers. You know, you forget how little experience he's had at the NFL level. You're it's not, you know, growth every single week. But over the timeline, you want to see growth from him this season. And that's something he's really struggled with as a pro. And they were hit in the middle of the field. And teams are like afraid to run the ball on the Bucs. So we'll see because this team, the Falcons are not afraid to run the ball on anyone. And so that's a real good on good. The stats for the Bucs, Stevens, as much as I believe in them and I've liked them going into this season, I've been joking.
They're the best. Were they 0-4?
0-4 team ever, and they were the best 1-5 team ever. Now I think they're one of the best 2-5 teams ever. They have a plus in a point differential going into this week. I don't know if they're third in EPA per play defense good, and that's what the numbers say, so it's a great test. Antoine Winfield could be returning in this game, which would give them a big shot in the arm in the back end. Let's go to the Dallas Cowboys, who got some energy last week with that road win in the division against They are home against the Cardinals. They're six and a half point favorites.
This is the Greg Olson game with Kenny Albert this week. And yeah, it's it's Cowboys privilege. You get Greg Olson even when you're playing the Cardinals at home. A rare 10 a.m. Pacific, which means it's noon locally. It's a rare. I mean, how often do the Cowboys play at noon? Almost never because they always have that four o'clock in primetime game. What is giving me joy is coming off last week, just seeing Dak Prescott pushing the ball down the field again. They've just been such a station to station offense this season, which is frustrating when you have George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb out there and the running game helped open up the deep passing game. And some of those passes from Dak were as pretty as any
that we've seen this season. And this is a defense that will take some chances and we'll let you push the ball down the field a little bit. So I want to see the vertical strikes of Dak Prescott again.
One of the things that was the most satisfying to watch about this run game is something that they've been hunting for two years.
And that is also getting the explosive runs going.
Javante Williams, his 155 yards on 25 carries also led to eight first downs, but also four explosive runs too. So runs of 10 plus yards, depending on which metric you're looking at, which analytics site you're looking at. This, to me, is such a critical factor because it does change the way defenses have to play you if you're vulnerable in the second or third level to runs of that length. And even when they were moving and just like moving people at will in the ground game last year after like week four or five or something like that, They still weren't explosive in the run game.
I don't think they're going to be consistently.
No, I don't think they are either.
Just because of Pickens and Lamb as your blockers and Williams is not an explosive guy. They would be a team which would be, Pollard would be an interesting fit. He's not explosive either. But they would be an interesting Jonathan Taylor team if you wanted to get really crazy. I.
And Jerry Jones might, honestly. He's been sort of broadcasting that all season so far. I wasn't implying that I think it's going to last. Javante Williams, it's just not his game, Javante Williams. But when it's on tape, That's the, that's the important thing. They hadn't, they had nothing. They could not even hold defenses accountable in that way. The Cardinals defense will have to be somewhat accountable for what is on tape. And it's kind of a Clayton Adams revenge game, maybe.
Yeah.
Clayton Adams, who is the assistant in, in Dallas, who's the run game coordinator, I believe is his official title. Got a lot of offensive pop offensive coordinator. He was the run game coordinator in Arizona.
That's right.
You know, a lot of pop this offseason. And, you know, they've been a little up and down offensively, although they've been fine. But the running game hasn't been consistent enough. This is a chance. If you want us to take us serious, you seriously, Dallas. Actually, you know, the last time they were in a spot similar to this. And I don't think the Cardinals are nearly as good as the Bucs. But it was that Bucs primetime game. And they got out physical in that game. I don't think the Cardinals will be able to do that. the Cardinals really miss Paris Johnson. It's an injury we didn't really hit on that much when it happened. The left tackle is one of their best players. They are starting Elijah Wilkinson at right tackle, who has struggled for years, wherever
he's been, kind of been one of the biggest attack points at right tackle in the NFL. And then now at left tackle, it's a kid, Jaden Williams. And it was a nightmare last week. And Like, Jacoby Brissett is just out there fighting for his life. I talked about it on our Guilty Pleasure show that just him and Michael Wilson and Trey McBride, they're just fighting so hard for 8- and 10-yard games.
And this is a good matchup for them.
But, like, if you got anything, Dallas, bring it this week. You should be able to defensively and get after a quarterback in Jacoby Brissett.
I saw a longtime colleague or friend say, of the PHNX podcast saying that that game was Mike LaFleur's villain origin story.
Just some of the facial expressions he had.
I will say like, this is a potential game as well for the Cowboys defense to build off of the positive flashes they showed. Demaravian Overshawn had, he was so fun to watch. Batted the ball, had the pick in the, in coverage. When I, on tape, It looks great on tape here. I don't think people understand how massive a human he actually is.
Like, to be able to move like that at the height.
And the size. NFL Daily guest to Marv yet overshadowed. Were you there?
I was not there. That was all you.
I just, I'm really excited watching him come to life. Having Joey Porter Jr. being able to do what he does.
He's played well so far.
They said that they said that it would help. And so far, it looks like it has helped.
They have big issues still, but there are some positive flashes in that game. This is a real opportunity because Cardinals, for all their.
Issues, have a lot of weapons.
Yeah, they could get Jeremiah Love back. They did lose Jalen Brooks for the season. He broke his wrist. He was the replacement for Marvin Harrison. I was thinking last week how without Jeremiah Love on the field and Marvin Harrison Jr., like, I was talking about all the weapons that they have. And it's like, there's not that many weapons anymore.
It's two.
And then it's a pretty big fall off. And Brooks, who had been playing well, is now, like I said, out for the season. We'll see if the Cowboys can take advantage of, you know, a little success. Not something they've done over the years. Let's go to the Raiders and the Jets. Jets in a losing streak. Raiders in a losing streak. Whoever loses this game is a seller.
What is giving you joy?
That one of these teams has to win this game. Or maybe they'll tie.
In winning, I think that whoever it is can flush out at least a little bit of the bad vibes. I tend to think that the Raiders will be the ones who come out on top of this game because even though their defense has been absolutely so porous the last couple of weeks on offense, they are doing some good things. The thing that really bothers me is that they have no run game to speak of. They have the concept of a run game. They have the ideas of a run game. They have no production in the run game. And while everybody is talking about Kirk Cousins or Fernando Mendoza and Clint Kubiak has to come out and be like, there is no controversy. And I'm trying to work on my Clint Kubiak impression, but.
There is no controversy.
I just want to tell you guys there is no controversy.
And so I think that the one that potentially is brewing that people should be talking about more is which running back are you going to put on the field? Oh, yeah. Because Mike Washington was far and away. you know, the second best running back in that game behind Blake Corum.
On the other side.
So I just think that it's only a matter of time before they have to make a really tough decision about this. It's just Ashton Janty. I love him as a player. I think he's a great, probably a great person, but he's just not explosive. He's not creating and they have to create for him, of course, but it's the same kind of thing over and over again. They're the second worst run game in the NFL right now in terms of the yards per carry and success rate.
Washington's hit a bunch of explosives. He passes the eye test. He has more explosives than Ashton Gentry. His success rate's even lower, though. I mean, they're about the same. So overall, on a down-to-down basis, the guys up front aren't going to get done. I think Washington is more likely to hit you with a long run. Aaron Glenn been under a lot of heat this week after another week of clock mismanagement.
Here is him at the podium. As always, honest... As.
Ever, I wouldn't say that. And I can see how, you know, you you would you would say that. And and it's not easy. You know, I will be upfront and tell you that. But it's my job to try to make sure these things happen. And I'm going to put the stress on me to be able to do that. And I just know as we continue day by day, I just got to continue to do a better job and making sure that my time as I'm studying off and I'm being with the defense, I'm installing. Man, Duke does a hell of a job of helping me with that.
And that's when I can actually transition and put my thoughts some way up to try to make sure I improve in that area too.
So he's admitting he needs improvement in that area. You can see it when you watch the game. It just feels a little too much for him.
I can't help but like him though, man. Like I get it. They need to improve. I understand that. But, It is so rare that you hear a coach go into detail about like specifically what he's doing.
It's always like, I got to be better for our guys or whatever.
Like he's actually outlining like, here is where in my day that I could improve my time management. Like, listen, I understand it's not, that doesn't translate into wins. I understand this is just me being soft as usual, but I just can't, I can't help but like him. He's probably not going to keep this job.
He's not going to get the chance to improve. He's going to have a chance to focus on defense. And defense has been, A little disappointing. I'm appreciating the Geno versus Kirk bowl just at this time in our lives.
I mean, the facts are the facts.
Kirk Cousins is like leading the NFL in 10 plus throws down the field. It hasn't been as good the last four weeks, but the defense is by far the biggest problem. And I think the Raiders are a great example of. what I like to say about defensive stats team-wise correlate more strongly to your strength of schedule than anything else. Then like it, it matches up very often with who you've played early in the season. Not as many tough opponents. They were looking great last four weeks, really tough opponents. They are the worst defense in the league by far in terms of EPA per play and success rate. They're getting cooked. It makes me wonder like, Would they trade Max Crosby? Like, would they get enough
for him? Would he be interested in that? I think if they lose this game, those are the types of questions we'll be asked.
Do you know who might need a pass rusher because the one they traded for is not very productive in the second half of the game so far this season?
The Ravens?
The Ravens.
Oh my God.
I was going to say the Cowboys, but they've traded for too many pass rushers. It's not going to happen. I don't think. You never know. Just every once in a while, I like to point out The Geno-sans. You know, we built up Geno coming over to the Jets.
We. I did.
And it's going pretty well. Like, I watched last week. He had some dimes. He had one bad throw. But ultimately, they put up 25 points and seven possessions. I'm not going to kill their offense. 19th in QBR, 18th in EPA per play. Now, you're going to say, okay, that's not great. The idea here is like... he's around league average right now. He's like a starting quarterback on the jets.
I mean, where's Sam Darnold, the man who replaced him? He's way down the list. Give him some protection and he's fine. Second in the league in yards for play when you play man. And what that says to me is like, he's just always going to give his receivers.
A chance except for Garrett Wilson.
Well, last week, but overall Garrett Wilson.
Yeah.
Hasn't had enough. Uh, Omar Cooper. Wow.
Um, That is a great combo, Omar Cooper, Garrett Wilson. He looks really good, Omar Cooper.
One of my favorite things in the world is watching you get so excited about any particular topic, this one being one of your favorites.
Yeah, Gino versus Kirk.
We're running out of time for matchups like this, and so enjoy it while you can. You know what else you can enjoy? This show, pumping out high-quality content.
Don't go anywhere.
Our late-game and prime-time coverage preview is in the feed that's Jordan and myself go check it out
