The National Football League. Competition at the highest level. All directed by the man under center.

Here's the snap. Let's time.

The quarterback leading his team to the ultimate prize.

We won the Super Bowl.

Can your team's QB handle the pressure? Can he define the position? 18 weeks of quarterback play.

Touchdowns. Ryan made the catch. Interceptions.

Awful decision.

32 quarterbacks begin the season with a chance, but only eight will play their way onto Quarterback Island.

Season three. Episode two of Quarterback Island. We're not done yet. We got new intros. Thank you to Randy Chavez.

The golden voice.

Yeah, Randy.

Thank you to Paul Allen for that Max Brosmer interception. I see you, Eric, behind the glass, putting that one in. And yes, at the very end of the season, only eight quarterbacks will remain on Quarterback Island. The eight quarterbacks who define the position are for the 2026 season. When we last left off, we have 12 quarterbacks on the island to start the year. It has been a tumultuous, rocky, there's been a lot of bad weather, like a month on the island, maybe the most that we've ever had.

And so I think we need some sort of vibe enhancer because it's going to get a little weird on quarterback island to start out. How about a blessing? A blessing would start with a blessing.

Yeah.

OK, that's great. Let's do it. So before we begin, we honor the sacred ground beneath our feet. Quarterback Island, a place where your resume can get you here, but it can't keep you here where no name is too big to be voted off and no passport. guarantees permanent residency. We give thanks to the football gods, metaphorically, of course, for strong arms, calm pockets, fourth quarter drives, impossible throws, and the rare quarterback who knows when to just simply throw it away. We honor those who came before us, those who earned their place on these shores, and those who were respectfully escorted back to the mainland. May our judgment be clear. May our recency bias be minimal. May we not be seduced by one spectacular Sunday or traumatized

by one terrible interception because the island is not for the merely good. It is reserved for the elite, the trusted, the quarterbacks upon whom franchises, fan bases, and occasionally our own credibility may safely rest So with gratitude for this sacred land, respect for the position, and absolutely no guarantee of job security, we hereby convene the Council of Quarterback Island.

May the best quarterbacks remain, and may everyone else start packing.

Oh! I feel peaceful. I feel inspired. And I've been accused of being a godless figure in my career. And yet I believe in the football gods.

I do too.

You don't tempt them.

When we last left off, the 12 quarterbacks on the island were Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow. And to be clear, this is in no particular order. Patrick Mahomes, Sam Darnold, Justin Herbert, Drake May, and Caleb Williams. Those were the 12 quarterbacks going into the season that we believed defined the position. I already used my riptide, a.k.a. ripcord, that anyone can use. to yank someone off the island and try to put someone on it. And I did that for Caleb Williams over Jared Goff. So I can no longer do that.

At least you know the rule.

This season. Ripcord. Progress. Riptide. My favorite. I love it. Let's do some housekeeping to start. Okay, sure. And of course, my name is Greg Rosenthal. This is Jordan Roderick. Colleen Wolfe. It's easy to just cross off some quarterbacks right off the bat. So let's just go through the players that were not on the island last time and have no chance to really be discussed seriously this time. And I'll just roll through the names quickly. And at the end, if you have any comments or you disagree, go for it.

But Gino Smith is not making it on this island. Neither is Malik Willis for the Dolphins. Deshaun Watson is not making it on this island. Neither is Aaron Rodgers. Daniel Jones, struggling. He's not there. Cam Ward, not there. I almost threw Bo Nix into this category. We'll see. I guess we can at least bring him up later.

Maybe.

Uh, Jamis Winston, definitely not on this Island, Washington. They just, no one's been healthy there. Kaliak Manis. Sorry. Not, not on the Island.

Odysseus.

Oh, I like that. And he would bring a fun Greek vibe on Reddit. Uh, so, so you never know. Uh, he's not on the Island. Minnesota does not have a candidate.

Sorry.

Uh, Kyler Murray, but we're not even going to discuss you. You are far off the list. Tampa Bay, Baker Mayfield, one of the worst quarterbacks in the league this year. Then he got hurt. Never pass up a chance to do a little dig there. We're going to cross him off. And yeah, Jacoby Brissett, not on. So I just eliminated a little less than half the league.

Okay.

I don't know if anything stands out to you among those.

Seems like you felt good doing it.

It brought you great joy.

I do worry about this exercise every time that I'm going to lose track of who is what. And so it is satisfying to just cross off, off the top of my head, 11 players. So now we're down to 21 potential guys on Quarterback Island.

More housekeeping might be needed because... we have injuries to think about, too. And the rule from the inception of Quarterback Island is that if you are injured for multiple weeks during the evaluation period, you must not be on the island.

Yes, we'll get to that, especially as it relates to some of the guys that were on before.

I'm just saying that means that we probably should cross Chicago's quarterbacks off.

Yes, we'll get to everyone that was on. And I think... let's think about the guys who ended last episode. Um, yes, that are maybe not on the Island for sure. Uh, you mentioned Caleb Williams. Do you feel any differently, even like the tiny bit about the Chicago quarterback position now that they've shown they can win with anyone? Not at all.

I think that this, when Caleb Williams is in his athleticism, his arm talent, his ability to make these impossible late, you know, late quarter throws the magic, the sparkle of what he can do is, is there. Um, and I think otherwise the, the floor is incredibly high and it's one of those offenses. And Ben Johnson, I think is flexing on us and the league a little bit and showing he kind of is in the Pantheon of, of offensive designers and play callers who can lift the floor so high that we were literally asking on the last show, what is the worst quarterback you think he could win with.

And it was a fun, it was a fun thought exercise. And I still don't have an answer. I mean, I'm, I'm thinking about like Brett Rippon.

Could he win with Callie McManus?

Could he, could he win with like a Brett Rippon type of quarterback? You know, that's kind of like the level that I'm thinking about. So for me, even though the injury, in my opinion, disqualifies the entire team quarterback position right now.

Yes.

It's going to be really fun when he comes back to think about his ascent back onto the island.

Yes, I felt great about that ripcord after week one. He puts up 59 points in week one. Jared Goff, who we can talk about later in the show, you know. I felt good about that. Injuries happen. So no Caleb Williams. There's two other names that were on the island last time around.

I feel like we need like a satellite island for injured quarterbacks who were on the island. It feels wrong to take someone off the island who's already there. So it's like, yeah, maybe they are on some type of.

It's a holding area. It's a raft. It's like a nice little cushy, relaxing.

What do they call it? You know, the boats that.

A dinghy?

Yeah. No, the ones that like to get away with the legality of gambling. They like, you know, they attach it to the.

A riverboat?

Yeah, like a riverboat on the mainland. It's like a it's a riverboat you just put out near Cubie Island.

1895.

We have a riverboat on the ocean, on the open seas.

Does it really make sense? But you know, New Orleans has some. No, no, you got it. So Justin Herbert started the season on quarterback Island.

Yeah.

He has been on quarterback Island about as consistently as any player in the Island's history, because he has occupied this interesting space where he's not like a top five quarterback, but he's solidly between five and 10. This isn't going to be a long conversation. He's obviously doesn't, you know, deserve to stay on the island, Colleen. But don't you find it shocking that he's one of the worst quarterbacks in the league? Statistically, you could argue he's like the worst.

And that's him and Jameis.

The frustrating part is we know what he's capable of doing and that this scheme fit just clearly it's it's not working or it's too early or like because maybe there will be some type of turnaround. And we've talked about this before, about simplifying things for him. how it just seems like he's so restricted in the offense that he's in right now. And it doesn't showcase what he's good at in his big arm and playing out of the structure. And it just it's just. doing him a disservice obviously i think too but then as it always is with the chargers their offensive line is falling apart they they can never get their offensive line together.

Yeah i think that's a well said it's it's really interesting you see these jim harbaugh press conferences where he just pauses for these long amounts of time i know where it's almost like he's trying to figure out how to exactly like explain the problem and it's it's unexplainable in the sense that It's too much of a lot of things and not enough of a lot of things at the same time. It's too much of the, the little tricks and wrinkles and timing plays and motions and concepts with, you know, that Mike McDaniel, we know can, can install and run at a high level. However, it's not enough of the fundamental things that need to apply to make this offense tick, which is a run game, which is the offensive line, which is Justin Herbert playing

better football. So it's a lot of things that are sort of unexplainable. When we talk about EPA per dropback, his company that he's keeping right now per next gen is Jacoby Brissett. Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, Cam Ward, Daniel Jones, Aaron Rodgers, Jameis Winston. And this is the bottom.

We're used to seeing him in the top 10 and he's just not there.

And the turnovers too.

It's incredible.

34 games.

30 qualifiers for QBR right now. He's 29th. And he's just not processing quickly enough and maybe that's the type of thing that Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel did not see coming. He's maybe never been the quickest of decision makers and that's an offense that's needed that. Another theory for those pauses from Jim Harbaugh, he's 62, you know.

First of all, that is young. I pause like looking for things, you know, you take that creatine to listen, you know, to get the mind working faster, but you just don't want to say the wrong thing.

I will not tolerate ageism on this show.

Just a theory. Goodbye. I guess we have to vote on it, but you know, no, he's gone. So Caleb's off. Justin Herber is off. And then there's at least one more clear guy who is off. I think we all vote no on Drake May staying on the island. Coming off his best game of the season. Certainly. And, you know, has some things to hold on to as positives. Like he's 11th. No, he's somehow 11th in QBR, which is crazy to me. QBR, I think overvalues the rushing ability.

He is the most valuable running quarterback in the league this year. So he actually has a lot of big plays. Like his yards per attempt, his explosives are among the top five players you know, to 10 quarterbacks in the league, he just, you know, is making awful decisions. So just in the interest of time, we're, we're voting you off and we hope to debate you longer next time around.

Cause that would mean you're playing, playing better. So three guys are off.

Okay.

And a lot of people are interested in QB Island. I know you got people like all around the country want to know inside the league, outside the league, who's going to be on, who's not. Is my guy going to be there or not? And it's a crazy season at quarterback. We just kicked off three young, really good players easily without even having to debate it. Yeah.

We should kick off a fourth.

We will in a second. But what I wanted to take this moment for And we're going to talk about everyone that was on the island before.

Staring the riverboat.

Yes.

Traditionally, at some point, we reduced the amount of quarterbacks on Quarterback Island.

Correct.

Traditionally, we've gone to 10 at mid-season. We finished the season with eight. Quarterback Island is an honor. There are not 10 quarterbacks who deserve to be on this island right now. 12 quarterbacks, that is, rather. And so I hereby declare we are reducing Quarterback Island to only 10 quarterbacks for this episode.

No way.

Oh, jeez.

I asked Eric pre-show if you were about to pull one and reduce. And Eric goes, hmm, I'm up.

I think this exercise needs to be flexible. And in my head, I was like, are there going to be 12 ones that are worth it? And then when I wrote down, I think it makes sense.

You know what? I do agree. I'm principled on my stance on you throwing plot twists into things. However, this result is one that I agree with.

Thank you.

The process was flawed.

How is the process flawed?

Just to bother you.

I believe in the football gods. I believe in myself as God on this island, too.

Whoa!

Do we need to stop down?

Just stop doing this show entirely.

Smite. Smite him. Smote it.

Please. Please don't. Okay. Okay. So we're down to 10. And I think as an exercise to continue, who is not on the island for sure. Jordan, you said there's at least one more because we're going to talk about all the players we think are easily on who are debatably on. But you have someone else you would like, I guess, to nominate to kick off the island that was there before. Go ahead. Yeah, I.

I argued exuberantly for him to be on. I feel like I should argue for him to be off as well. Jordan Love. Obviously the situation around him is dire right now. The Packers just redid their entire offensive line minus one position. They can't run the ball. They're putting a lot on him and obviously that you know, lens to what is happening with him statistically. And when you watch the tape, it is just so stressful because he's, he's under so much pressure and he's facing among the highest pressure rate in the NFL right now. He's getting, he's getting, trying to get the ball out faster. They basically had to turn their run game into a short passing game because they don't have a run game. And that is, that

is a red flag cry for help in my mind. And so to me, I don't think Jordan Love should be on the island. He's also, every game, there's a couple of decisions where you can just tell. He feels it. He is frazzled. He is not, you know, making some of the clear-headed decisions that we're used to seeing. And so I do think he should be off the island this time. I'm not really sure.

Why do you think that they decided to make a change with the offense after Jordan Love had such a productive year last year and now... they went and decided to kind of strip everything down. Like it's year one all over again. That's what Matt LaFleur had said.

It's a great question. They, they were trying to basically, um, addition by subtraction, their receivers room, you're trying to bring more clarity to the passing game and make sure that receivers, especially Matthew golden going into your two had really defined roles and understood where in the like progression they were going to be. And Tucker Kraft coming back and basically the offense running through him and Matthew Golden and Christian Watson.

The problem is. They never did anything to address their run game that they knew they were going to have problems with because Josh Jacobs facing some serious domestic violence allegations and was always likely to be suspended. And then their offensive line, it's a position catastrophe. Multiple injuries along the front and guys who we thought were just out of the league forever are now playing for the Green Bay Packers.

They mis-evaluated their entire offensive line. It's just, it's blown up the whole team.

Exactly.

Like they thought they would get by because they've gotten by in the past and they stink.

And so even what they thought they were going to be able to do, we never saw it because it was a disaster from the start and it just kept compounding.

That's an easy no. I agree. He was like a little less obvious to me than Drake May.

Not on.

He does not.

Define the position. Some of his numbers are closer to the middle of the pack. He's coming off of a game where he played better. But even in that game, he has a groaner. No, he had a groaner of an interception. At the end. So there's four players who have already been kicked off. So we have eight players that were on the island before that we have not discussed.

And now I'm going to propose a group, and you guys can disagree or agree, of five. Should I make it six? I want to have some conversations of these guys.

You're going to do what you want anyway, so just do what you want.

No, I'm saying... Like, do we need to vote on any of these guys? I'm going to list off six guys. I do want to talk about some. Okay. I'm going to go five. I'm going to hold off on that. All right. Five it is. Five guys who I believe we should just put on quarterback island. Okay. Patrick Mahomes.

Yes.

Yep.

Wait, can we hold the cards up?

Brock Purdy.

Yes. Yep.

Dak Prescott. Yes. Josh Allen.

Yep.

Yes.

Yes.

You know what? I'm going to stop there. Let's just stop there. Let's just stop there and vote yes. And just put a pin. And if you guys have any thoughts of where those guys are at, Patrick Mahomes, he's making me feel pretty good about my MVP prediction right now. I mean, there's certainly other, it's so early in the season, but I do love the ease in which he is throwing the deep ball and making it look easy in a way that's like, hey, like there's a reason why great football minds, we're calling him like the best quarterback that they've ever seen coming into the league. He is playing with that sort of confidence. Some of the analytics aren't quite as elite as some of the other top quarterbacks,

but eye test wise and the mobility, he's been awesome this year.

Yeah, I think actually when you're listing these guys off minus a basically, you know, two quarter sequence and a groaner of an interception from Josh Allen, I think you've listed guys who are in the mid, for MVP so far this season.

Okay. I'm glad you brought up Josh Allen, Brock.

Purdy, Dak Prescott, and Josh Allen.

So Josh Allen, if I, he's definitely on. If we were talking after the last two weeks were his only two weeks of the season, he's been messy. He would tell you that. I don't think he's played that well the last two weeks. He was a reason they lost that game on Sunday. The decision making wasn't good. They just weren't efficient. They couldn't get anything going in the second half of that game. And the Chargers game was similar where he gets in bad streaks. the first two weeks of the season, he was the best player in the league. And that's why, and he's Josh freaking Allen.

And there were great things in those games. And so I believe he stays on QB Allen, but I did just want to note, like if those were the only two games of the season, like it started off like a house on fire and it just hasn't quite been the same the last couple of weeks, but that, that happens in the course of a season. Yeah.

The highs were so high to start the season on a short week too. Um, that that's to me why he is still in the conversation with the rest of these guys. Because yeah, like I mentioned just now in my, in my argument or in my comment, like there have been a couple of real groaners, real bad decisions, real, really bad.

You didn't like the behind the back, no look pass over that happened to just go over like a Patriots, a couple of heads that would have been an all time groaner. He is 18th in success rate this season. And that, that speaks to what I'm talking about on a play to play basis. It's been a little chaotic. Like, great ups but um you know some inconsistencies DAC uh to me has been fantastic Brock Purdy every number is outrageous I can already see the argument coming for MVP as related to Brock Purdy let's just let it let's just let it simmer for now but right now the numbers are so outrageous um and.

Yeah those three in particular are upper the top of the top.

Right yes and so in in DAC um as we get to our fifth guy to me is a better version of, of Joe Burrow, who is okay. He's basically who you expect him to be. And he's consistent week to week. And he's one of the smartest players in the league. And I just wanted to have like a, a little discussion on Joe Burrow. My guess is he's going to be on quarterback Island.

Okay.

But are we like, like a little disappointed?

Yeah.

They're 10th in offense efficiency right now. It's not weighted towards pass or run. DVOA, 12th in passing, 12th in running. He's 14th in EPA per play, 13th in success rate. The eye test is complicated. You can obviously see how good he is. In three of four games, and that's the sample we're working on, he's had back-breaking turnovers. One of them was a pick six that they overcame against the Buccaneers. Last week, it's a couple interceptions that short circuit's the comeback, the, the, the fumble at the end of the Steelers game, like he's done a lot of good things, but I don't think he's where he wants to be so far this season.

Well, he's also when you're throwing 54 times in a game and you, this volume, like, yeah, there's going to be some mistakes, but I just wish that the offense had a little bit more balance for him because I think that he would look like a cleaner player at this point.

Even in the passing game itself, which is like overloaded right now, to your point, um, like it's a little feast or famine to me. It's a little explosive play dependent to me. And certainly it was against some of the better defenses or what we thought were going to be the better defenses opening the season. And it is interesting.

I would like to see more balance. He is, uh, I think ninth or fourth, 12th in the league in EPA per drop pack right now in terms of EPA, in terms of next-gen stats. He's behind a couple of notable names that I'm hoping we get a chance to discuss here.

And that's why it's complicated. And look, in Cincinnati this week, they're kind of having a deeper Joe Burrow conversation because there's all these stats about how many times he's had the ball late in games and made mistakes. Paul Daner of The Athletic has a crazy stat, which... I think it was the last three years. First three quarters of the game leads the NFL in turnover rate.

Okay.

And he's the best at preventing turnovers in, in two score games. So it's kind of like late and close last, I think eight minutes, 10 minutes of the game. He's like the worst in the league. Like he's, he's had all these turnovers. He's bottom like three or five. Like he's had all these turnovers in big spots.

And anti-clutch gene.

I don't think like, I don't believe in that, but there is something going on there. And I think it has to do with like that quote that he had the other day. He's like, well, I just want to throw out more. I just, you know, right. Oh, like, no, it's not a problem that we're not running the ball at all. Just give me the ball. Give me the ball.

Give me the ball. Like, and he's, he's kind of running the ship and.

Yeah.

We say yes.

It's not like calm down. It's not Armageddon.

I'm not ready.

Armageddon.

It is Armageddon.

Yes, it is.

I'm not ready to say no.

It is kind of, yeah.

Are you guys? I'm not ready to say no.

We got to keep him on.

I want to see more. He's on for me.

Okay.

If we were going down to eight, you know, maybe a conversation. That would be a conversation. Joe Burrow, you're on. Let's get to the sixth quarterback in this group.

Okay.

And with Lamar Jackson, we have an injury update. Ian Rappaport of NFL Network. You see him on ESPN sometimes with Colleen. We're all friends here.

That's right.

We're sharing our meals on Sunday together.

Breaking bread.

They used to be on different floors. Now they're on the same floor. Lamar Jackson sounds unlikely to play this week with an ankle injury, but it's not believed to be a long-term injury. And he's not ruled out for this week either. He has a chance to play on Sunday night football, or it could be the Falcons versus Tyler Huntley. I, you know, lean towards keeping Lamar Jackson on quarterback Island because he's played so well. We had a very similar situation last year and kept him. And then he missed more time than we expected.

So, okay. Sorry to be the rules person again, you guys, I'm sorry, but He didn't miss games other than the quarter, the half, whatever, in this last game. He did not miss the evaluation chunk of games.

Good call.

It was in the evaluation chunk of games.

The evaluation period.

Chunk. This next evaluation period, he may not be able to make it on the island. He can be on the island because he was not injured during this evaluation.

OK, this is why I love Jordan. You know, sometimes she supports my proclivities with facts. It is. Yeah, I'm voting yes. And look, it's a sliding scale. It's a weird sense of justice. Lamar Jackson, until that injuries, maybe been the best quarterback in the league this year. His yards per attempt is more than a yard higher than every other quarterback. He's getting a lot of great rushing value.

Let's go.

Right. Like he's always good over the middle of the field and he's doing that this year, but you are seeing him push the ball to the outside. It's been, It's been pretty awesome to watch.

Number two in EPA per dropback with the injury.

Okay. So yeah, it's him and Purdy statistically that have been the very best. So despite that ankle injury, I'm glad. I'm glad that that was easy. We have six players. Is that right? That are for sure on the island that were there last time. You don't have to leave. You don't have to pack your bags. Colleen's got a flight to Paris like in a matter of hours.

I'm going to London, Greg.

Oh, London. Paris is in a couple weeks. Uh, in a couple hours.

I sure do. You're packed. Well, yeah, I, I realized this morning that it was not a red eye, like a traditional red eye flight. So I thought I was going to have some time to go home and pack after the shows, but no, I did not. I packed this morning. Okay.

We're ready to go.

Okay. I think then in the interest of time, let's take a quick break. And when we come back, we are going to get into the nifty gritty.

Okay.

The four remaining members of this edition of Quarterback Island. We are back. Yeah, we are. Quarterback Island. Do you have any more mystical invocations to give us? That put me in a good mood to start the show.

Well, we once again honor the land that the quarterbacks are sent to.

Yes, we have six quarterbacks who are on the island still. Dak, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow. They're there. We have only four spots remaining to fill. because we have reduced the amount of quarterbacks that will be on the island. We have not crossed off or even mentioned 10 different situations in the league. Jordan, Sam Darnold finished last season, you know, on the podium. We felt bad that we didn't have him on quarterback island to end last season. We put him on because I thought going into the season, he was defining the position.

He got hurt. So that's a disqualifying factor. And if I was just basing it just on his play this year, I would say it's probably on the wrong side of borderline. It's been a little too up and down anyways. Yes.

I think both can be true and both are true in this case.

Whereas.

when we were talking about the injury clause for Kayla Williams, uh, you know, some of the highs and the electricity that he's been playing with, you could see it. You could see why he would still qualify Sam Darnold. On the other hand, it's been up and down. Their offense has been inconsistent. They need to run the ball better. It looks like they're trying to do whatever they can to just like look at new personnel for that. And I think Sam Darnold, yeah, when he's, when he's puts together a full healthy streak, we'll give him a a fuller evaluation but between the injury clause and his play I.

Don't think he's on the island I don't think so either I mean just looking at the the well I was thinking about his injury from week one and wondering if that how much that is playing into his performance at all but I know that that doesn't make a difference in terms of throwing costly turnovers. And that's what we've seen in the second half, at least in week three.

And he's just not as not as the rhythm isn't there that we saw last season.

I don't think he's why. Yeah, I don't think he's far from it. Like I test wise, I think he's been OK. Like. It's interesting. If you look at his statistical profile, it's like all over the map. He's actually a bottom five quarterback in QBR, which is crazy. But he's like above average, close to top 10 in success rate, which is more of the play-to-play basis. He's in the middle of some others. So it's just been a little up and down. That's a no on Sam Darnold. Sorry, Sam.

You'll be back.

I feel like no one gets put on and yanked off. the island more than sam darnold one player i just well it's sort.

Of fitting i mean his journey has been yeah yeah.

One player i didn't mention off the top was just michael pennix we see what you're doing uh you're just a cog in the machine right now that is the atlanta falcons but who knows maybe next time around he'll be a longer discussion i'm.

Gonna say he's on the island next time wow.

I've had me the first half hey whoa.

I'll say no right now but i just wanted to be like hey Yeah. We see you, Michael Penick.

He's a no, but man, even though it's mostly quick underneath stuff right now or mid-range stuff, when he throws the deep ball, it's nice.

Jalen Hurts is coming off two of the most discouraging games of his career, I think, in a way, because we got excited about the first couple weeks. Now when you look back at it, it's like, like the offense struggled more with Tennessee than any other team. Washington, I thought he looked good week one Washington overall. But the last two weeks have been really discouraging. I don't even think he really warrants a conversation right now with Jalen Hurts, which is disappointing. But I wanted to bring him up in the context of the news that came down on Tuesday.

It would just feel weird not to mention here that Lane Johnson has retired from football. And this is a likely future Hall of Famer. I think very likely. A guy who has talked a lot about mental health and his struggles with it. A guy who, in his statement, retiring on Tuesday. And this does come somewhat out of nowhere.

At least his absence on Sunday came somewhat out of nowhere.

That was the sign, the first sign.

Right.

But even that one, I think it was... Brandon Graham, Chris Long talked about it. The team didn't know about that until maybe the day before. It wasn't something they knew was coming. And then in his statement, he said what's important right now is his family and his mental health. And obviously, from our perspective, the only thing you can do is wish him good luck. I'm thinking more brass tacks of it all about this Eagles season and where it leaves Jalen Hurts right now.

Well, the offense is obviously hurting because there's so many injuries in general. But now this offensive line that has been dealing with injuries now, we saw what that line is going to look like without Lane Johnson already. And it's not good. And this is not something that they were able to plan for. So just that compounding all of the other injuries with Saquon getting injured early in the game. I mean, you just have a myriad of problems and everything looks so difficult for the offense right now.

It just seems like there's nothing that comes easy for them.

Plus, I wonder how much Jeff Stalin not being in there anymore. For sure. You felt even though Lane Johnson was playing well. when he was healthy, especially last couple years, you also always felt that he is a person who does deal with a lot of that burden of what it is to be a football player mentally in the NFL and the pressure and And I think he really there's a room of solace there with somebody like Jeff Sattlin, who was a lot more than a coach to a lot of those guys and is no longer coaching on the team. And so to me, I wonder if that could have held the thread together a little bit more.

And in this case, it just maybe wasn't worth it.

It's a great call. And you mentioned how the offensive line didn't look good without him on Sunday. They haven't looked good with him. He's looked good. But the offensive line, it's not the Eagles offensive line. it does feel like the end of something here with Lane Johnson. And I, I do go back to that Stoutland decision. Cause I, I think between Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman, they, they kind of made a decision of who they were going to prioritize. And Nick Sirianni was clearly prioritized. And however that was going to work out, who knows, maybe Jeff Stoutland was going to be out. Like something was ending there. And, and, Landon Dickerson played some good football for them. I don't know if he's going to ever play for them again

or play at a high level again. Cam Juergens has really been struggling. And so this is what made them them. And I think it does point out with Jalen Hurts. like most quarterbacks, he rises and falls a little more than you want with his surroundings for a guy to bring it back to quarterback Island that you, that you would want on the Island that is going to be at that high level, no matter what's around him. So he's an easy no for me, but.

Yeah, there's just no identity either with this office.

It's a tough time to be taking a trip to London right now. And they have the Jaguars, which is a tough.

Opponent around for us, Colleen. There is to see.

Okay.

Yeah.

The Eagles are in a darker spot, I think, right now than than any time I can remember, you know, since since kind of like the Wentz thing was falling, falling apart. That's what it reminds me of. It feels like a like the next year Wentz.

Yeah, it kind of feels like a like a reboot of sorts. Almost. It's giving that vibe.

It is.

Okay.

So we've eliminated a lot of people. There's a lot of negatives here. Does anyone want to? And right now we're at the point where we're voting. We're saying no. We're saying yes. Colleen, I will give you the honor. Let's nominate someone we want to put on. There's only two spots left. Or go off. Sometimes it's easier to cross off, guys. But if you feel so strong that we need to get someone on right now.

Yeah. Yeah.

We need to put Bryce Young on the island. Let's get Bryce Young on here. He's been one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He leads the league in passing volume, and it's not coming with turnovers. Only two interceptions on 162 attempts. They've been so aggressive with stretching the field. This is not just like a bunch of little check downs. He's throwing deep downfield. Carolina ranks among the top in the league in 20 plus area attempts.

And he's doing it in spotlights like primetime games, Sunday night football against the Lions. This week, was a great start for him.

Four games.

I'm so in. Get him on the island.

Bryce Young, welcome.

The craziest thing ever, and we are all holding up our branded Yes placards, which you can now buy on... No, I'm just kidding. You can't buy anything.

And then it turns into a peptide that you mix up.

The crazy thing is, knowing Jordan, that's disturbing to think about. I knew this wasn't even going to be a discussion. That's how good Bryce Young is right now.

Wow.

It's really crazy. It reminds me a lot of our friend, Ollie Connolly. We send our thoughts to him as he's battling some medical issues. And he's been talking about... Bryce Young and Dave Canales were a weird mix forever that they should just fully embrace the Bryce of it all, which is spread RPO, all this different stuff and stop trying to run kind of the Dave Canales type of more traditional offense. And I think they've done that with Brad Izzik and he has been so good against pressure.

If you think about each week, like he was one of the best quarterbacks week one against the bears. He was one of the best quarterbacks week two against Falcons. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the league last week against the The Lions and golf. Yep. But the game that did it for me in a way was remember last year that the bottoms for Bryce Young were so bad against the Browns. And I know most of America has not seen that game. He got banged up.

He faced the most pressure of any quarterback in any game all season. Jalen Coker got hurt. His offensive lines hurt. He was struggling a little bit early in that game. And in the fourth quarter of that game in late third, he goes three straight scoring drives to take the lead. And the defense blew the lead and everything. But like even in a game where it wasn't like his best game, he showed everything. It's amazing to see him kind of living his best self life.

He's so damn calm. Like he does not get rattled and he will pass the pill. Like I absolutely love that. First of all, first time quarterback Islander, Bryce Young. Congratulations young man. This is awesome. And I have to say the way that he can execute every type of, you know, machination in this game plan that they throw his way that, that all elevates him and vice versa. He brings it to life. They've played completely different types of football, moving receivers around, trying to capitalize on especially mismatches. When a personnel is very limited, you saw it in the Detroit game.

Everything was going up the middle of the field until everyone crowded the middle of the field. Then he was hitting the perimeter shots. He can do anything in this office and I absolutely love how he's playing football and the confidence. And I just, I'm really proud of him. Truly. On a human level, I'm really proud of him.

Alabama, Bryce Young.

Yes. Because remember how out on him people were. And it was like, just believe in him and just see what he can do when he's got some weapons and a good play caller and some design and See how he can elevate. It's not just him as a system guy. It is him elevating what is built around him, which is how it should be in the NFL.

I like him even more because of how mentally tough and resilient he is because he didn't let any of that affect him and then just become a broken, mentally broken quarterback. Like it made him even better.

He's on the same team. How rare this is. He is on the same team where he was basically left for dead by most of this league. And he's on that same team and elevating that team to new heights right now.

My comp from the very beginning has been Alex Smith, not in terms of its play style, but in terms of how could his career end up in a positive way? Number one, overall picks that had some of the worst rookie play that you've ever seen. And he, he kind of is in his Alex Smith with Jim Harbaugh era and hopefully becomes a beloved figure like, like Alex Smith did in two different places. Hopefully Bryson stays there, but I love that point you make about elevating. He is making everyone else better because of what he can do.

Okay.

We have seven guys on the Island. We have three spots remaining. We have seven different quarterbacks. We haven't talked about, I'm going to do, just some housekeeping and say Bonex is not making it on this island. Steve Weiss. Great job on Monday Night Football. He did such a good job. They wanted to keep him there an extra day to introduce the segment and everything. So he couldn't make it.

We missed Steve today. And I will thank you for your great work by saying we're not even going to discuss Bo Nix at length.

Sorry, White.

He's not really playing that well. He's just a lot of checkdowns and not seeing the field. It's wild. He's okay, but like a little worse than I would have expected this year.

So wait, who are.

But he's eliminated.

So who is on the island right now?

Dak, Allen, Mahomes, Purdy, Lamar, Burrow, and Bryce Young. So we have three spots left and we have six different players to talk about. That includes, you know, one guy who was on it before, Matthew Stafford, and some possible new residents. Do you want to nominate someone to go on right now, Jordan? Maybe the person you feel most strong that of the remaining people need to be on this island.

Yeah, Trevor Lawrence needs to be on this island. I mean, he's playing outstanding football. There's honestly not much more that's new to say about him because he's carrying forward some excellent play. He really started to emerge in the second half of last season. run and pass. He can pick up yards with his legs. He's he looks confident. He's throwing some absolute lasers in tight windows. This offense, we just talked up how much Bryce Young is able to elevate this offense, the combination of a more evolved run game.

setting Trevor Lawrence up the run threat that he also can pose at times as well. Adding dimension to that, his, his playmakers year two in this system, the confidence it's, it's all just happening for him right now. The Jaguars are a wagon right now and they're fun. And I can't wait for you to get to go watch them in person, Colleen. And yeah, Trevor Lawrence belongs on court.

Yeah. I'm sure she's really loving the idea of watching this wagon steamroll. over the Eagles.

Silver linings.

I vote yes. It's too easy.

And he's third in the NFL in EPA per drop back.

It's a credit to him. One thing I never expected, like Trevor Lawrence is the steady guy now.

Yeah.

You know what I mean? Trevor Lawrence is just the guy who's kind of the same week after week. It's a great situation that he's in. His play collar is obviously elevating him, but that's not going to change anytime soon. It's really efficient, everything he's doing. If you look at all the numbers, it's generally like he's in that top seven area, and he's been very good against pressure. I asked our friend John Shipley, who covers them locally, just what he thought the biggest difference was, and he went to accuracy, and I think that's true, that Trevor Lawrence, it always bothered me how you just Like he just missed so many throws surprisingly out of nowhere. And I think accuracy a lot of times is about timing. Like it's,

it's just, he's in rhythm in the offense. He knows when to throw. He's not throwing a beat late. So he's catching the receivers at the right time. And it's just awesome.

It just seems like too, he's really able to diagnose defenses better too. Like it seems like he's picking defenses apart and that's like a next level game.

I know.

Okay. So we have, we have two spots left. there's a couple of names here that I don't know how seriously we're really going to discuss them or not. I have a feeling Tyler Shuck is not a serious discussion. Um, I just wanted to put some respect on his name. I don't think he deserves to be on quarterback Island, but if you look at the numbers, he's about average or a little better than average in all the numbers.

The eye test I would say is good, not great, but he is a second year quarterback and, who I think is making the progress overall and like kind of maintaining the gains he showed late last season in a positive way. His team is a bit of a mess and he's not a slam. Like he's, he's not on quarterback Island, but he's, he's making some progress. It's a no, it's a no.

Sorry to Tyler Sheck, but it's a no. We're all holding up our no cards.

You know what we need to see a little bit more is some throws over the middle. It's all, it's all deep. It's all deep into the outside. Like, it's hard to win unless you're using the middle of the field. He's not doing it right now.

Do it, Greg.

Yeah. We're all waiting. It's a yes or no. I don't even, I don't know. I am now at the point where I almost want to cross off one more name. That's actually what I want.

We should. It is merited.

Well, I don't know who you're talking about. I was going to bring up CJ Stroud.

Hmm.

Okay.

This is a tough one, too.

Yeah.

This is a tough one. He's playing good football. His team is a disaster. It's a new problem every week. It's a whack-a-mole team where something new will happen that you just didn't even realize this team was capable of losing in this way because of how soundly they looked on paper.

What is up with their defense?

He's playing well, and it's funny. It's not funny, but there are games where... It's like the defense is letting him down, which never happened last year.

I wanted to bring him up because eye test wise, I think he's close. Eric cannot believe we're even talking about CJ Stroud right now. He thinks we defend him. We excuse him too much. He does not deserve a spot on quarterback island. I will say no right off the bat. I don't think so.

Nope.

Unanimous.

I test wise, good. Numbers wise, even like EPA per play success rate, he's top like 15. Like, so if you're going to be CJ Stroud on a winless team, your numbers better be eye popping to somehow make it onto the island. QBR, he's even down at 18th, 19th. But it's like, okay, I kind of like Shuck, I see you. You're not crazy far out of the mix.

That leaves us with a pretty simple problem or, you know, way to talk about these last three guys. There's only three players we have not talked about.

Uh-huh.

There's two spots left.

How many have played for the Rams?

That's one of them. Oh, that's two of them. Good call. Um... There's almost a part of me that just wants to leave these eight guys as quarterback Island. Cause the, the, the eight guys that are on right now are like awesome, but that feels too chaotic. The three players left are Jared Goff of the lions, Kirk cousins of the Raiders, and Matthew Stafford of the Rams. And I think the fact that we got to this point naturally, it's okay to talk about all three of them together because we kind of know we're choosing two of the three of them.

So I'll let Colleen kick off. We don't need to vote yes or no right away on any of the three, but anything you feel strongly about of one of these three, like a yes or a no, or just of the three, maybe who stands out to you the most?

Well, out of these three, I'd say I would almost rank them... Stafford golf, Kirk cousins.

In my head.

Um, but we're getting one old guy on the Island. We know that.

I know.

Yes.

He, Matthew Stafford has looked different this year. Did isn't playing like the same Matthew Stafford. He was last year, MVP, Matthew Stafford. Um, the decisions he's made are interesting because the turnovers I just didn't expect him to be going on this type of interception binge that he's on right now.

But that's sort of the ride. And that is the biggest thing that is counted against him in my mind right now is the decision-making and the turnover.

Yeah, let's talk Stafford now. We'll keep it to him.

You know what's interesting is I don't think, to me, this is not a hard decision to me. As the biggest Stafford supporter probably in this building, like, he is. Got six interceptions in the first four games. Their passing game is a disjointed disaster. He's been off in some of these games, which he would admit to that. And he ranks outside of the top, ooh, the top 11 in advanced statistics like EPA per drop pack, where he's 14th behind Deshaun Watson, or right, yeah, right behind Deshaun Watson, and 12th and success rate. So the stats and the eye test match, he's turning the ball over when this guy's on, he is like a top three quarterback in the NFL given, but he's not on right now. And yeah,

you can caveat the same things. We're caveating for a lot of these guys, which is injuries, receivers, passing game, whatever. They've been missing a lot of players. He's the offensive linesman playing pretty well. They've had a great protection plan for him at times, too, against intense fronts. He's throwing interceptions.

He's not taking care of the football. And he's just off to me.

He's a little off. And those numbers to me are close to being a borderline guy. They're not that much worse than Cousins' numbers. They're like a little bit worse. 13th in success rate, yeah, 15th EPA per dropback. You're not really sure where the ball is going right now when he throws it. Obviously, Pukunukuwa.

Cousins is higher in success rate and EPA per dropback.

But they're both kind of borderline-ish.

That's true.

And so we're talking about like defining the position. That's part of it too. Stafford... Right now. Right. Stafford, I do think, gets a little bit of tiebreaker that he is Matthew Stafford because... kind of like Joe Burrow gets a little bit of benefit of being Joe Burrow. If he had a different name, like, I don't know if like he would have been that much of a rubber stamp.

He would have been more of a debate. Even in his bad games, Matthew Stafford, like last week. he had three or four incredible throws on two game winning drives in the fourth quarter. So the crazy thing about Stafford is we should not be that surprised that this is him. This was exactly how he started the 2024 season for half the season.

You're right.

This is most of his career. Frankly, it's why I don't think he's a slam dunk hall of famer because for most of his career, when you're ranking the quarterbacks during a season, you're like, eh, he's probably outside the top, you know, eight or so, but he's knocking on the door and he gets hot. So, I struggled with these three for me in a row. Who is the one Jordan?

I'm curious for you that you, we heard Colleen's three, how she ranked them. Who do you feel the strongest should be on?

Well, I think, I mean, I think we should put Jared Goff on the Island. I think this offense is going to be just fine under Drew Petzing. I think it's a good match. You know, he is, right in the same cluster as Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Lamar in terms of EPA per drop back and early in the season, I understand it's a small sample size, but this offense to me is not, is nowhere close to being the issue. He is not the issue.

Yeah.

You still see the same things pop up. You said it about Stafford. You see sometimes the same things pop up with him that you always are going to see in that regard to me, because you know, I have to, I have to give equal energy when I'm hyping Matthew Stafford, who to me is like one of my favorite quarterbacks I've ever seen play football. Like I have to give equal energy when he's not top 10 worthy.

Sure. But you want, you know, don't want to be harder on him because I don't think you are either.

The turnovers are crazy. The turnovers are what really is, is helping to, to really define this for me. And Jared Goff has not thrown an exception.

Goff is, is interesting. So good. Like turnovers.

And obviously he's carrying so much of the offenses, like the passing game load right now. And the fact that he's been able to take care of the ball.

So well, offensive line right now.

Exactly.

Yeah.

Yeah, he's top six in EPA and success rate 10th in QBR. It's kind of similar, though, of the reason why he didn't make it in the first place. He's solid. He's better this year against pressure. That's the thing I like about him. His numbers against pressure this year have been significantly better, whereas Stafford's haven't been... Great.

But the reason you didn't make it in the first place is because you rip rip tied.

Right.

Yeah.

But it was because you guys had him as like the 12th quarterback, too. And even on the thing that bothers me about.

That, that makes me want him on even more now.

Even even on Sunday when he was against Bryce Young, you could have looked at as a QB. I went off. They kind of have similar situations. And Bryce Young's got a little more to it. Like he's he's elevating maybe more. And then Jared Goff, that commercial. I forget. Is it a pizza commercial?

Yeah.

It's tough.

I liked it. I think he's dry.

It's a little tough. He's nice and dry.

Also, we're not having as enthusiastic conversation about Jared Goff right now as we just did for Bryce. So that should tell you.

That's what I mean. So that's why him versus Stafford, it's going to get people in Rams headquarters mad. But I will vote yes on Jared Goff, partly because I feel bad for yanking him off last time.

Look forward to arguing for Matthew Stafford to be back on.

That leaves it with Kirk and Matthew Stafford as the last two people. And I think something to think about with Kirk Cousins right now is this is not a prediction. This is not, can he keep this up? I would argue, yeah, he's defining the position in a way that is unsustainable.

Uh-huh.

But is. More exciting than Jared Goff or Stafford. I mean, the numbers actually aren't that much different than Stafford. He's 12th in QBR, 9th in success rate, 10th in EPA, like a little better in each one. But the thing that gets me and what is insane is if you look at the numbers versus pressure. it's basically the big three in the NFL right now who are making the most plays out of either out of structure or with heat in their face. It's Patrick Mahomes. It's Brock Purdy who just dominates every stat and it's Kirko freaking change. It makes no sense because he can't move. And yet he has been moving that, that throw he made to Brock Bowers late in that game, Colleen, that might've, that might've

been like the first throw that ever got someone on quarterback. I mean, It's like, OK, you're right about.

He has catapulted. He's revitalized the Raiders and revitalized himself so much so that he is playing to be on quarterback island right now.

Yeah.

And we have to remember, too, you always say defining the position and then that's where you stop your sentence. We take this in chunks. This is in periods, right? Evaluation period. Yep. Like we this is what is happening right now. Like if we're voting for the entire year predictively, I will say I'll put Matthew Stafford on fine. I have no qualms.

Yes.

But we're talking about here right now. Freaking now. And Kirk Cousins is playing to quote and borrow a phrase from our friend Connor Orr, like he popped extra leave in the morning. Like he is ready and he is doing things that you did not think. His body was capable of doing.

At this age. He's been so quick under pressure, too. When he's under pressure, he gets rid of the ball so quick.

And we think of him as ancient because he had that Achilles at such an advanced age, the torn Achilles.

Advanced age.

We keep calling him old and sober.

I will not tolerate ageism on this podcast.

He's the same age as Stafford. And, you know, he's a couple years away from the injury. Now, your little rankings... Colleen, we're instructive to start this out. And then I saw where Jordan was going. All complaints about Matthew Stafford not being on the island can go to Mrs. Rams Jordan. Because I thought for me, it was going to come down to Stafford or Goff. And I was actually probably leaning Kirko, Stafford, Goff in that order. I saw where you guys were going.

And I.

I've had enough of kicking Jared Goff off the island at the last second, but I do feel most strongly of this trio that Kirko's got to be on right now. I vote yes for Kirk Cousins.

I think that Kirk Cousins right now, this is his best chance to be on the island. And he does deserve to be on the island because of his play. So yes, I want him on the island.

Yes, I agree. And you know what, Greg? You instigator.

Yes. I.

I think this is fair. I also think this is fair. Okay. I think this is a completely fair, you know, not only assessment of these last three, but also subject to change. Cause that, you know, two of these three are, can be real streaky. So subject to change.

And, and, Yeah, I'm too easily influenced by the last thing I saw. And when I saw those two drives by Stafford in the rain against the Eagles, I was like, actually, those were pretty sweet in the end. And, you know, did.

Goff quite do enough? He's great, but what got him there? Yeah.

Did Goff quite do enough?

With all due respect, my favorite quarterback.

I'm sick of the Lions fans coming after.

That's... That's real analysis.

Yes.

So wait, did we officially vote on Stafford?

We're voting no on Matthew Stafford. I mean, at this point, we have 10 people on the island. I can't hold up my arm. My arm is dead. You were the one that... My arm is.

I have lost all feeling in my... I can't hold up my arm.

You were the one that pushed him in that little boat.

It's fair. That is what's fair to do.

What do we do? We have a canoe. We bring him with a canoe. We have like a.

Listen, I know you don't personally experience this, Greg, but this is what... Fairness looks like.

Okay. I think so.

We're calling the Coast Guard.

Yes. Someone will escort him off the island. You'll be back. That's Eric's job. I think that's Eric's job.

Respectfully escort him off the island.

Big game to prove it.

Official 10. And yes, the numbers are down. He could have stayed on, but frankly, there weren't 12 quarterbacks that fully deserved it right now. There are only 10 quarterbacks on the island. after week four we will be back doing quarterback island somewhere in the week eight to nine area depending on when steve weiss and colleen and jordan are available because we got to get the whole crew.

Back together we're a family patrick.

Mahomes brock purdy dac prescott josh allen joe burrow lamar jackson bryce young congratulations trevor lawrence and jared goff welcome back to the island it's some time there last year. And Kirk Cousins for the first time.

Oh, Kirk, welcome.

I didn't think you had it in you, you old dog. We'll see if he's even the starter.

It's like taking the dog on the car ride right before, you know. Oh, stop it.

Oh, my God.

I'm sorry.

No. Well, on that note.

Oh!
