Good morning, sweet world, and welcome to the No Dunks NBA podcast. It's Thursday, October 22nd, 2026. I'm J.E. Skeets here in the Classic Factory, a little sleepy, but also energized. And alongside me, as always, Tass Mellis.
Thank you for joining us to talk about NBA's real opening night.
That's right.
Next to him, it's my top shot hot boy, Trey Kirby.
Ayo! Ayo!
And over yonder, making the magic happen, super producer JD.
Hello.
There he is. Here we are. Shout out to everyone joining us live right now on YouTube. Love to see it. And of course, everyone watching and listening later. The Atlanta Dream, two wins away from the WNBA title.
Yeah.
I'm fearful to even say that out loud, you know, when it comes to Atlanta sports. Things can turn on a dime.
A lot of series left.
Hey, a lot of series left.
Just be like Angel Reese, talking into existence.
That's right, that's right.
That's her line.
So the dream, two wins away, and Kenny Smith, two new knees. You see that? Looking pretty good.
Straighten him out. Straighten him right out.
His legs aren't so bow-legged now.
Yeah, I thought of you as they walked back to the screen instead of running back, because you always hate that bit. let's race i loved.
It the first 10 000 times they did the bit they switched it up you can't run him and shack walk back there and then shot.
Shack imitated kenny smith for a good minute just copying what he was saying.
It looks great you no longer look like the the letter k as he said more of an h i guess all right so we have So much to talk about. Tass said it, the real opening night. I mean, it's exciting. I love it. But I'm also like, you know, this first big night where there's 10, 11 games on, I get like anxiety. I'm like, ah, what am I missing? Oh, I got my quad box going. Oh God, what game should I be focusing on? There's that like feeling. You got to get used to the rhythm of it all.
You do.
Yeah.
But I liked your quad box. I was doing the same thing. Yeah, yeah. It's a good time.
Quad box.
Hey, you know, two nights in, really one, it feels like. League Pass working smoothly. Any issues for you last night?
Well, the ESPN feed kept dropping out on my quad box. Oh, okay. You know, there's three other ones to watch, so it was all right. Good, good.
Okay, well, again, we got a ton to talk about here, so let's do it by playing once again. It's just one game, but. And before we start sharing our overreactions, just fair warning here, okay? We are not going to be able to get to every single game because there will be people upset. Oh, you didn't talk about my team or my player or this performance. No, we didn't.
Good thing is we do 1,000 goddamn shows. So don't worry. We'll eventually, as the week goes on and weeks go on, I'm sure get to your team. I just wanted to get that out of the way.
You don't think we're going to even mention each of the 11 games? Oh, we are.
Mentioned, sure, but that will not appease most people.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a fair point.
Okay, Trey, get us started, though. It's just one game, but.
It's just one game, but Anthony Edwards is the MVP. Second part. The Timberwolves have the best backcourt in the league.
Oh, my God. They take a lot of threes and hit a lot of.
Threes last time. They take a lot of threes and hit a lot of threes.
The Mellow plus Ant.
Me likey.
Me likey a lot.
Sure.
45 points, nine threes for Anthony Edwards last night. 17 points, six assists, five three-pointers for LaMelo Ball. Timberwolves hit 21 of 50 from three last night. Pretty good. Could be commonplace to me to see them at least getting over 20. Will the percentages be that good? I don't know, but. They're going to get him up, and this looks like an awesome version of Anthony Edwards through exactly one game, but the off-ball mix really unleashes him. He still gets to do his on-ball stuff, which is good. In the third quarter, when he was really on fire, I thought it was mostly ISO stuff, him just hitting some ridiculous step-back threes and getting into a groove, but early on, he's getting so many quality off-ball looks, whether they're catching
shoots or coming around A screen, the defenders trailing him, the defense is bent, an easy attack for him. You also see the joy that LaMelo gets from assisting in Anthony Edwards' basket. He's happier to get an assist than Ant is to score a bucket. Let's hug it out, buddy. On every single play, I think it's great. This is just a dynamic, dynamic backcourt. I think the two of them together. LaMelo kind of juices your pace in the full court settings. He does like to play fast break basketball.
I thought McDaniels, Ayo, Kamingo were really encouraged by playing alongside LaMelo, but he also just makes such quick decisions in half-court scenarios so that Anthony Edwards is getting the best possible looks he can when he's playing on the second side. McDaniels is now just able to go out there and scavenge when he's getting the third-best defender and the third-best look. LaMelo's just making those plays so smooth, so...
48 minutes in, this team looks unstoppable offensively, and they are going to present problems for teams the entire season.
Was it the guy who was talking trash to Anthony Edwards from the Heat bench that got him going? Was that the same guy as who talked trash to Klay Thompson? Myron Gardner last year? Because Anthony Edwards said, yeah, somebody's talking trash to me now. Myron Gardner and Klay Thompson are teammates on the Miami Heat. Speaking of Klay Thompson...
I'll throw in it. It's just one game, but for him, it's just one game, but he's done starting. It was just one game for him, but he's got to go to the bench. I think it's over now. That was a tough matchup. As you said, one of the best backcourts in the NBA for him to be out there. Unfortunately, clay is just a little slow defensively. He had four fouls in his first 12 minutes. He played out there, but more importantly, offensively, the Miami heat need a ball handler out there. They just do. or else they're going to keep turning it over like they did last night.
And that turned into those fast break points that, as you said about LaMelo Ball, there was just a ton of them out there. 31 points off turnovers for the Wolves. The problem is you put Klay Thompson to the bench and you kind of just have a duplicate on the bench. I mean, you got another Tim Hardaway out there, Nikola Jovic to some degree. If you throw Pella Larson into the starting lineup, which I think will eventually happen, it's not going to be just one game, but I think it will be several. We saw it last year. Klay Thompson started the first seven games for the Mavs, went to the bench. And I think it's going to happen.
Eric Swolscher is going to throw him out there. It'll be better against a different backcourt, but they need somebody to create. You saw Stan Van Gundy say it in preseason. They just don't have ball handlers. And I think you saw it last night. He was just roughed up. He just gets burned. Giannis said, I think it's on me.
I don't think we tried enough defensively. And that starts with me. But if he's burning... everything he's got defensively, then what is he going to do offensively? You know, they just need better defenders and better ball handlers. And that's the problem with the Heat. Do they have enough of them? I think Phil Larson's got to be out there, but he's the point guard for the second unit. So it's, it's a problem is just the roster. Simple as that.
It could be.
Absolutely could be, you know, Giannis was okay, obviously carrying the offensive load, but going to need some three point shooting or shots to drop. They only hit eight total as a team, only 33 attempts even. And then, yeah, defensively, you're going to have to get stops here, giving up 131 points. But, yeah, is this like, don't overreact too much.
It's the Wolves.
We don't have to play LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards every single night. The two guys that are like always have been like near the top of the leaderboard when it comes to three-point.
Attempts, right?
They just jack them up. And, yeah, right now they are feeling so good. The honeymoon, man. This is hilarious. I also love that LaMelo Ball only had one turnover. That was the one stat I wanted to keep my eye on because that's another thing with those two guys. They get turnover happy. How many could there be when it comes to the possession game with this squad? But only one. Ant had four, but that's a great sign for this team.
You start to watch this team, they look great. I thought we were having some flashback Jonathan Kaminga moments where he's like, okay, that's my shot. I'm playing ISO Ball, but he got over that real quick and they were just too good and they were doing a great job at stealing the ball from Miami. Those five turnovers from Davion Mitchell, too many. And that's why I think he needs a ball handler beside him. But this was a perfect night for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Yeah. They're like, they're so confident. They feel in their six guys and then it'll be like finding like who's the seventh, eighth, ninth guy. Cause Io DeSumo on the bench. Great. And then the starters elite in this game for sure. And then it will be like, okay, who are those other guys to step up? But yeah, perfect start here to the, to the Aunt LaMelo experiment.
Yeah, it seemed like they would be fun to watch playing together, and it was awesome to watch them playing together. And like, they trust Kaminga. They're like, all right, man, you're gonna play hard. You get to guard Giannis. Go out there and do your best, you know? And like you're saying, Giannis in transition, it was literally dominating, but Once the Heat offense had to slow down and play half-court basketball, it was looking pretty ugly. It was like, if Giannis can't run through somebody, who's getting a look? So, yeah, I don't know. Pella Larson did pass the ball nicely on the break for the second unit, but he didn't try to score. That's the other problem, too. And you're absolutely right. When the Timberwolves saw Klay Thompson as the
defender for any of the perimeter guys, they're like, throw him in a screen. He's not going to be able to keep up.
No, he's too slow.
And the other thing with the Wolves... The good thing for Kaminga and even McDaniels to some extent is they play with Rudy. So yeah, the backcourt's going to take a bunch of threes. They're going to jack it up, get their shots. But Rudy, he's not demanding the ball. He knows what he does well. Obviously, defensive, rebound, he'll get his when he can. But there are shots for Kaminga.
There are shots. There's opportunity still for their wing guys there. And they should be because they're talented guys so you know those two guys combining McDaniels and Kaminga for 29 um in like 60 minutes of play that is solid a couple three-point attempts for both of them this is fine but great great start yeah.
From the Wolves I do think there is pressure on Rudy just to play as simple as that but he's a tough yeah tough dude he always plays because if they if he drops off it's the Johan Baron J experiment, which wasn't great last night. And here comes Trey Lyles. He's back, baby. He's back in the NBA. That's him.
That is him.
He looks different.
More hair.
Right?
Yeah, he's a grown man now. He's just filled out. A legendary non-travel on the yellow ball. The side step. I counted it. I think it was 28 steps. It was unbelievable. Even he, after the game, was like, yeah, that's a travel.
He just started at one.
Point and just kept shuffling over and just kept going and going.
Yeah, I thought a two-step is allowed, but that was country line dancing. I mean, that was just from the left to the right, five steps. Jonathan Sterling was standing there. Referee Jonathan Sterling.
Wow. They're like, wow, that's cool.
I didn't know you could do that.
Is he the pickleball guy, JD? Referee Jonathan Sterling? Yes, I believe he is. Maybe that's allowed. Maybe that's allowed in pickleball. You got to watch his feet because he probably steps into the kitchen all the time and just lets it go.
Let's get out of the kitchen.
How do you guys feel about players being interviewed during the game? You know, well, no, I don't like it either. I, It went from end of quarter to now to during live play. Rudy Gobert is being interviewed. Two arms hanging back on the bench.
Well, it's like obviously, you know, it shrinks the actual game action because they do– how they do their second box. So you're sort of squinting to see it a little bit. And it's like what are you really– what are these guys adding? No offense to Rudy. I think it's 99.9% of them. It's like– You know, WNBA does this a lot too.
Yeah, they do.
Talking with the players, it's like, okay.
It's pointless.
Yeah.
Pointless.
It's not good for the team, for a guy who's playing to be interviewed while he's playing, sort of. Tim Hardaway was the guy they focused on the Heat because he was playing back where his dad used to play and they asked him about the number and all that. But he was watching the game. He's like, I'm trying to be into the game. This is the first game.
I'm trying.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
I like end of quarter a little better, which are always, you know, hit or miss.
Yeah, you're not getting a whole lot either, but at least there's no game action going on.
Yeah, that part's weird.
Yeah, what do you think?
We don't need it. And it even, like, creeps in then to all the recaps as well because they're like, wow, we got this content. let's throw in Rudy Gobert talking. Like you're saying, that was the one that stuck out to me too. He's just chilling. It looks like he's recording a podcast during the game, but then you're like stuck with like three minutes of just random action going on.
I don't know. It's a, It's not the best, but I'm sure they paid for it to have the access, so you're getting it, sucker.
Now, I could get on board with throw to the guy on the bench and he has to do an ad read.
That could be fun.
Instead of a commercial, let's throw it over to Rudy and see what he's selling.
Athletic greens.
That'd be fun.
You want a live polymarket?
Rudy Gobert, he probably has hairy shave club or whatever, right? With the bald head. They got after him for the razors. Yeah. I cut my hair into a goatee every morning with Harry's razors.
There we go.
Rudy Gobert.
Let him cook.
Drop a promo code, Rudy. Okay, let's keep it going. What do you got, Tass? What game do you want to focus on here?
Rockets-Mavs. It's just one game, but the Rockets will have the best offense in the NBA. After one game? Okay. They do.
Oh, you checked it.
I did, yeah.
I was wondering if you were going to check.
They absolutely destroyed the Mavs.
Yeah.
And we talked about it coming into the season. Fred Feinvliet is back for this team, just being their point guard. Does that help? Yeah. Yeah, it does. It's not only that and his 11 assists, which weren't all sexy assists. They're just, you know, very average. A big number. The other thing is Shengun and Amin Thompson. are also playmakers.
They're also really good passers. So those guys were at it last night. 20 combined for those three guys. And the other guys that really benefit, Durant and Jabari Smith. Those guys aren't passers, technically. And so they benefited from just receiving those passes. If you want to get geeky about the numbers, they're also number one in assist ratio already. Yeah.
Assist per 100 total possessions. And then you go to the bench and here comes Marcus Smart and now Reed Shepard. So they just have a different team. Plus their offensive rebounding, which we always know they're good at. They had 17 yesterday, crushing the Mavs on the boards with an injured Steven Adams.
So they're winning 70-38 at half. What a spanker. They're up 32, causing Dallas turnovers. The Rockets were getting out on fast breaks. That was a real, real bad game just overall. And I'll stop there. I don't know what you guys thought about the game In general, because that was embarrassing.
No, it was not one of the best games from last night because the Rockets smacked them. Yeah, the final score looks even closer than it is. Like you read it, you're like 128-110. I don't know, for some reason it doesn't sound brutal, but it wasn't even close. I mean, it's still an 18-point win, but it wasn't even that close.
30 from those guys in KD and Jabari Smith just ready to take passes and hit shots. And that's what they excel at.
With Tari Eason getting tossed like three minutes into the game.
Yeah, just like... What's that?
I saw him score. I didn't see him get tossed.
He got tossed immediately after you brought some score.
Just one shove of P.J. Washington off the ball. Yeah. You get two flagrants for that. It was a little extreme. But, yeah, this wasn't a game at all. It was done at half.
No, but you're right about the way that the starting lineup fits together where Durant and especially Jabari Smith are play finishers. Like Durant obviously creates for himself. Sometimes he can be a playmaker, but he's out there to get buckets and it was looking easy for him last night. But Smith is a guy that definitely needs plays created for him. So if there's KD to take the attention away from him and then everybody else is capable of making plays, it makes a lot of sense. Then I thought the second unit, the pace they were playing with was pretty impressive. The Rockets were flying last night, and this isn't a team that I think of as a fast-breaking team, but they made an effort to get out
in transition, a good way to score against a team like the Mavericks, who... when they have a chance to set up, have a lot of bodies out there, a lot of length, not that it mattered at all. I also thought Marcus Smart was pretty helpful. Bogdan Bogdanovich was pretty helpful. Visa's a deep team. They've got some good athletes, so they should run as much as they possibly can.
It was a great performance for Houston.
I would say the Rockets bench, definitely impressed, and maybe the Mavericks have the worst bench in the league. It's not very good. That's true. Not that the starters did all that well either. Cooper got his. Kyrie, a quiet game. But their bench is inexperienced guys. It's going to be interesting to see. And I think Dusty May, their new head coach, he was playing a lot of guys. That was the other thing. Early on, he had like 10 guys that already played in the first half. So he's trying to find out who's got it, who works together.
So it might be some growing pains here. And if you took the Mavericks under, maybe you're feeling better because maybe it'll take a while for them to find any sort of groove. But look, they're playing a very good Rockets team. We were all very high on Houston, especially with Van Vliet back. He changes just the makeup of that team. He didn't even have a good game shooting the ball.
He's got to be out there. Yes. He spreads the floor and gets the ball to the right guys. He's the coach on the floor, for sure, for sure. Yeah, we'll see. This is a fun, it's just one game, but we'll see how they evolve into game number two. Are they still going to be running? We'll just see how that goes. So we'll see. We'll be keeping an eye on 29 fast break points. That's a lot of fast break points for this team. And then the complaint was, or the, the, the thought was behind the Dallas Mavericks.
They're going to turn over a ton because they just don't have a lot of good guards. They turn it over 21 times. And I do wonder, you know, the, the, the Rose here is that Marcus Sasser was good off the bench. Maybe he plays more. He was just, he was really good. And maybe he needs to play as a ball handler beside Kyrie 17.6 of eight shooting for that guy. four or five from three maybe he just needs to get out there uh because that was nice a nice little signing from detroit but here we are um they're.
Bad best offense in the league you're saying they were eighth overall last year right and this is missing key pieces so you know maybe it's not that far-fetched that they uh they have the best offense in league those are great offenses in this league so we'll see.
And we didn't mention cooper flight 32 points most ever by a teenager in an opener game Oh, boy.
Wow, nice one.
He's still a teenager. Teen Vogue. There's some wild stats that everybody comes up with. It was also a 32-point halftime lead for the Rockets. That's the largest halftime deficit in a head coach's first game with a team in NBA history for Dusty May. Wow.
That's not one you want.
Not bad, Dusty. Not good. So anyway, Koop looked good, but he needs some friends.
All right, next one here. It's just one game, but... The NBA is a cruel and unforgiving place. And let me explain. I got a few sort of factions here to this one. First off, you know, look, everybody enters last night undefeated.
Yes.
Optimism is just sky high, all time high. And then the basketball actually starts and, you know, it goes poorly for teams like the Mavericks or the Phoenix Suns, for example. They were down 21 to nothing. They hadn't even had their warm-ups off yet, and they're down 21-0. Dame and the Blazers reigning threes. They led by as many 52 points.
Mike Inori pulled the Blazers starters early in the fourth quarter because it was like they were up huge. So that was just a smack to the face to some teams. Holy crap. Suns weren't alone. There were other teams that got pumped.
That was awesome.
But that one was like, holy crap. This was our pick-em game.
That was a weird one, man.
And we were in the slack going, well, that one's over. It was over in three minutes.
That was crazy. That was crazy.
So that's the first part. Second part is the rookies. Outside of... Keaton Wagler, the number five pick, who had a decent game for the Clips. They're playing the Kings.
That helps.
But the top rookies in the 26th draft class, you know, they struggled. They look a little shell-shocked. You know, it was a, holy crap, we're in the league now here. It's a little different. Two of them went head-to-head in Memphis, Darren Peterson and Cam Boozer. Peterson, nine points for the Jazz. Boozer, 11-7-5.
Respectable counting stats, but he went 2-15 from the floor. He didn't hit a three. Rough shooting game for him. They had one nice big fast break body. Who was that, too? He threw a big boy out of the way.
Yeah, he threw a big boy grilling on the roof out of the way. I don't remember who it was. Was it Jared Jackson?
Yeah, I guess it could have been. I can't remember. Yeah, but anyway.
Pete Kramica goes.
Holy cow!
You Ben Tam boozled! That's it, that's it, yeah.
Pretty funny.
That was off the sick Jalen Wells save on the side. That led to that one.
That was a good play.
Holy cow.
But two of 15, rough. And then number four pick, Caleb Wilson for your Chicago Bulls. Nine turnovers in his NBA debut. A minus 45 against the Raptors. He was. That was his plus minus versus a tenacious Raptors defense. So the point is, look, these rooks, It's different in the preseason, man. There's Summer League.
A lot of room to grow.
A lot of room to grow, but a bit of a wake-up call. And then DeBansa didn't even play for the Wizards. We'll get to them later. But then perhaps the best example of the NBA being a cruel and unforgiving place was Yaxel Lindenborg, his debut with the Warriors versus Luka. And they got into it. There was some fireworks between these two. They spilled to after the game and the post-game comments, which I'm sure we'll share later.
But Yaxl said he lost all respect for Luka because of the way he basically begs for calls, whines, and all that. But, man, we had Luka pump faking Lindenberg, got him talking crap. And this was fun, but maybe not the best decision. You know, look, when he was on him, Luka didn't do a whole lot, so you've got to give Lindenberg credit for that. But Luka got his, and they punked him, too. Obviously, the offense was flowing.
But yeah, any reaction to Yaxel versus Luka?
I love it. From Yaxel Lindenberg, if I'm his teammate, I absolutely love it. I want that kind of a-hole on my team. That's a good place to be an a-hole. I thought he was really, really good at staying down and not biting fur. Most of them. Yeah, most of them. That one that you're speaking about specifically when they really got into it. Yeah. He bit.
Tempers were flaring though, leading up to that.
Yes.
This is a trash.
Talk at least. Yeah.
Yeah.
But after the game, Draymond Green was like, I love that guy. That's awesome.
What a shock.
Of course.
It's perfect.
And hey, when we got into the roster of this team, the Gold State Warriors, I was excited preseason because I knew that this guy was good. And he looks huge beside Luka Doncic because Luka's huge. And Axel's taller than him. And so I think that's a great sign. But then what happened last night, we'll get into that. Unfortunate news about Chris Epps, Porzingis. There's a lot.
Going on with the Warriors.
Bad start to the Warriors season.
Bad start everywhere for the Golden State Warriors. But here, I'm okay with it. I kind of liked it.
I didn't think Kirby would have this opinion.
I don't know. It is pretty funny to see Yaxel carrying himself like he's a six-time All-NBA player. and getting punked. I mean, he got punked by Luka Doncic. He got a trash-talking technical in the first half of his NBA career, and then he's trying to pull the Tony Allen no-arms defense on Luka at the end of the half, gets pushed, and then Luka drops a.
50-footer on his head.
That was hilarious.
That was so funny. I enjoy Yaxel as well. I like having him as a personality, but you probably shouldn't go starting fights with the best players in the league.
Oh, yeah, that's a mistake. Yeah, you're going to get lit up for.
An entire season.
It's one thing to do it on the floor, and then, like I said, he doubled down, tripled down after the game. Quote, I had a lot of respect for Luka because, well, I didn't really watch the NBA much. I just watched the highlights. I saw him kill people. But being in it firsthand and seeing all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect.
Seeing it up close.
And personal, he said. Then he's just whining for all these calls. He lost his respect. I don't think Luke is going to care that much.
Nico Harrison is going to love Yaxa Lindenberg. He's like, yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
I mean, there was that funny part. Like after that initial dust up, I think Steve Kerr took Lindenberg out of the game. Was it the following possession? Luka hit a jumper and basically was like pointing at Yaxel on the bench. So then Kerr put him back in to guard him. All right, get back in there. He's calling for you.
He is huge. And so it makes sense physically. But unfortunately for the Golden State Warriors, you start this season without Jimmy Butler. You start it without another rotation guy and Moses Moody. And then the Kristaps Porzingis news of all of it. He's got pots and that seems to be something which may force him to retire. And it's just incredibly sad news. And it seems like that's the direction they're going to go. And then you don't have, or he's going to go, I should say. And then you don't have Brandon Pajemski in this particular game. So that's a third of your roster. Yeah. Not playing. So, yeah.
Not an incredible win, I don't think, for the Lakers because they beat this team now the way they are.
Good start for Walker Kessler, though, who they gave a lot of money to and gave up a lot of draft capital for, and he didn't miss a shot. So that's a good contract if he's not going to miss a shot. 12-12 from the floor.
I was laughing because we said, where is he going to be on the Lakers' all-time center, Mount Rushmore? And then in his first game, he has as many dunks as any Lakers center since Shaq. And the only other guy that was 12 for 12 was Will Chamberlain. Start chiseling him up there now. Get Shaq in the plane.
See you in South Dakota.
Shaq after the game. Shaq dubbed him Milk Chamberlain to Walker Kessler.
That's good, yeah.
Which has been thrown around, too. Who was that college player with the glasses?
Robbie. Robbie Avila.
Yeah, right. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Remember he had a million names? But anyway.
Yeah.
Milk Chamberlain maybe will be bestowed upon Walker Kessler.
Yeah.
He had a lot of dunks.
A lot of dunks.
And a lot of them from Luca.
For sure. So that makes sense.
Yeah.
He was also called Jumper Kessler. I saw that highlight. Good job. Was that Bo Estes? Yeah. On NBA.com. I mean, a perfect match for Luka. Yeah, he doesn't just walk.
He doesn't just walk.
That's funny. That's funny.
But also, it was a dunk where he barely has to jump because he's a giant dude.
A little reverse.
But great start. Great start for those two. And it's like, at least on paper, we were thinking, yeah, this is the type of center you probably want next to Luka. We've seen examples of this, and it seems to work. Yeah, through one game against a very depleted Warriors team. Awesome, awesome start there. Because the offense was humming.
They were.
Yeah. All right, let's do another round. Some more games here. Back to you, TK.
It's just one game, but Tyrese Halliburton is 100% back. Had to watch this one on League Pass. Not a national TV game, remember? Tyrese Halliburton making his debut on the road. On league pass, 23 points, 12 assists, was attacking all night long against the Pelicans. It was driving kicks. It was paint touches. He had a dunk in the half court in the fourth quarter, which.
I was like, okay.
I guess your body is feeling pretty good. Just so many layups generated for Halliburton. But the most impressive thing with him is that this guy's like smelling salts. One sniff. clarifies everything you're awake you just want to run and rage and that's what the Pacers were like it's like instantly the fast break is back yeah instantly Siakam is getting the ball for any potential mismatch he has if he's streaking down the court he's getting a layup out of it because Halliburton is gonna find him it also means that it's the return of the Pacers being clutch gods this was a game that was very cheap to get into if you're a New Orleans Pelicans fan, and you got treated to quite the game down the stretch.
This was like back and forth both sides, and it was the Pacers' unstoppable offense. It was just Halliburton and Siakam in a pick and roll every single time. Depending on who got the switch, it was going to be Siakam shooting a mid-ranger over Jeremiah Fears, or it was going to be Halliburton dancing against Diane Williamson. Had to feel good for him to get that big end one with the left hand. That was basically the dagger, though there was a couple of chances for that. Pelicans to come back and make some threes. But it didn't go down.
This was a fun game, I thought, and exactly what you wanted to see from Halliburton, who then, of course, was emotional afterwards, as he should have been.
Yeah, this was an entertaining game. Siakam checked in after his typical mid-fourth quarter little rest, and then he couldn't miss. And then you said Halliburton had two tough floaters go down the stretch. So the two of them in the final five minutes combined for 13 of their final 15 points. Clutch these guys. And it's great to have the pace back in our lives. Like last year, it was complete write-off.
Very early on, I was like, okay, completely different team without them. We probably won't be watching all that much. Siakam did his thing, still was an all-star. But now, yeah, him back there, it's just fun as hell. And Zubats, you know, did work on the offensive glass. Nearly Nearly sort of blew it there with, I guess, Zion taking a board from him. I think it was Zion late, but yeah, thought he fit in okay.
Yeah, and Halliburton had some trash talk too with Derek Queen in this game. He was ready to talk. I thought, both sides, because you said it was a good game if you're a New Orleans Pelicans fan, just to be there to watch it go till the wire. I thought Derek Queen was really good trying to guard the guards of the Pacers and get out as a big... to snuff it a little bit. I thought that that fight was good. Um, and so fun ending. And then as you said, Tyrese Halliburton, really, really emotional opening up. It was nice to see those. It wasn't, it was just nice to see him open up and be emotional and, and talk about, it's nice to see men being able to do that in general. Cause that was, those were,
those tears were flowing, uh, post game.
So did you see what he wore to the game too? He literally rocked like a triple H outfit. Like a jean jacket and the old Triple H logo. I think it may have been the actual outfit that Triple H wore at some WrestleMania or some event.
I thought he was a leather vest man. I don't really know Triple H's attire.
He had many looks.
You liked it?
Well, I mean, it's very Triple H.
I think it's actually his because they have a relationship.
It could be, yeah.
Yeah, because Halliburton's a huge wrestling fan.
Yeah, the jacket looks big on him. Yeah, I think it is.
So it looks like it's sort of a jean vest, but it's got the black sleeves going on. Yeah, okay, this is Triple H.
Now, I don't know if Halliburton did, like, did he put water in his mouth?
Spitting everywhere.
Spitted everywhere. I didn't see that, so.
He's going to be on Pat McAfee's show, I'm sure, with Triple H sitting right beside him. Probably will. I imagine that could happen.
So Queen didn't start for the Pelicans.
No.
But Fears did.
Fears did.
Fears did.
Yep.
And they went. So they went with Fears, DeJounte Murray, and then Trey Murphy III, Zion, and Yves Missy started for the Pelicans.
You're keeping track of that.
Yves was flying around.
Yeah, I thought so too. The Pelicans put up a fight.
I was like, all right. Playing potential. Exactly.
Exactly.
I thought they definitely proved us right. Like they're going to be. If they're able to keep their veterans, depending on what they decide to do team building wise. I was like, OK, they played all the dudes in like Sadiq Bay and Ben Matherin, who was pretty solid as well. Zion made two three pointers and held the pose on the last one. But a little depressing to hear Joel Myers.
Zion three ball.
Air ball. It was way.
Short, too. It was way short. It was way short, but at least he took it, man.
Yeah. You could hear the broadcaster like, it was a good look. He was open. They let it fly.
For the scramble, it was fine.
Yeah, exactly. This is the thing about the Pelicans. They had some close games to start the season last year in those losses. They lost by six to start the season, I should say. Then they lost by four in overtime, and then the blowouts kind of started a little bit. They also had some close losses. So the difference is DeJounte Murray is there and maybe they're a little bit more in order because they didn't have him to start last year's season. So we'll see how they respond.
Tass, back to you, your second round here for this little segment.
It's just one game, but this year's Grizzlies are last year's Suns. And by that, I mean... they are going to surprise some people. They're going to win some games and people are going to hate playing against this team. I think that's clear. Even after one game, you could see it out there. Grizzlies versus the Jazz last night.
Grizzlies were plus 17 in rebounds, plus 12 in bench points, plus 14 in fast break points. And I think that's going to keep up as games go on because they got two lines. Call them hockey lines. They run 10 deep. Thomas Isolo throws these guys out there and they are full of energy. That run that they had in the third quarter, start the third quarter, 18-4, turn this game around.
They've got just a bunch of guys you don't want to play against. Jalen Wells, not fun to play against. Cedric Howard, not fun to play against. I've never heard a broadcast team, Brevin Knight specifically on the Grizzlies broadcast, be so excited about Jeremy Grant. He's like, Jeremy Grant. I've always wanted him.
I bring his name up all the time.
Now he's here and he's helping out. I think they're just going to annoy people and they're just not going to let anyone be comfortable. Like last year's Suns. Maybe they're not going to win 55 games. They're not going to win, you know, even over 40.
Yeah.
Yeah. The Suns won 45. I don't think that the Grizzlies have even that capability of getting to that in the tough West. But they are going to make things tough for the other team. Like Jaron Jackson Jr. had a tough day against his old team, fouling out in 28 minutes. And we can all say it was all Ty Jerome.
I was going to say. Then we're going to get to the other 45.
I think you can say, whoa, Ty Jerome's not going to keep on doing that. But you can also say, well, Cam Boozer's also not going to shoot that badly for them again. So there will be a balance. But yeah, Ty Jerome, just absolute ball. And I'm wearing this plaid shirt. Today I'm like, oh, yeah, Ty Jerome would wear something like this.
Is that why you're wearing plaid today, too?
I got up and said, what would.
Ty Jerome wear?
Absolutely.
I just watched those and I picked my outfit and I'm like, oh, yeah, this is a Ty Jerome fit right here.
I'd love to get his opinion on that.
He dropped 45. He was destroying Keontae George. He was really bodying Keontae George. He was dog walking him. Yeah, that was tough. But 45. The most in a season opener for any Grizzly. Period.
Ever. Done.
John Moran had it.
Yeah, 44. Just got him. In his second season. But anyway, overall, Ty Jerome's going to come back to earth, but I just do think this team's difficult to play against.
Jerome was looking like Kyrie Irving with like that touch he had on his shots, man. He's like that floater was going everything. He just has a nice little touch with it. He played really well last year.
Yeah.
In very limited time. And he was in and out, in and out, in and out of the lineup. But he was like nearly a 20 point per game score. And he had like a crazy high, like PER and his per 36 numbers were off the charts. And it's like, well, I mean, can it translate to an actual season? Yeah, he's not scoring 45, but he should be, I think, the leading scorer on this team. He can play.
He can shoot.
But, yeah, the Jazz, man, not a great first game from them. Coming into this season, talking about that optimism and like, all right, here we go. We're trying to win. And, you know, I think, yeah, there's going to be a lot of games where they give up 123 points because the defense is suspect, but we're expecting them to score and keep pace. So only 103, that's just bad. And Keontae was okay offensively. Everybody else I thought was garbage.
Yeah, I just didn't think the ball was getting to the right people. It was Markkinen and Triple J. They only had two shots really late into the second quarter. And so, you know, other guys should be touching the ball. A minute 30 left, those two guys are the only shooters. So, Keontae George, you just got to get it to the right places, I think. Distribute a little bit more and don't focus on your offense as much. Because that's what this team is supposed to be. You're supposed to get 20 points literally from every guy. And it can be any guy's night. And so that was disappointing on that side.
I actually disagree with you guys. I think Ty Jerome's going to average 45 points.
Well, he's probably the leader for most improved player after one game of basketball.
Yeah, Javante Green had a great run on top of the leaderboard, but it's Ty Jerome now. The shots he was making were ridiculous. Like he had one where he tried to grift some free throws that– Didn't fool the refs, but he still made the shot. He banked in a three-pointer in the first quarter. So then eventually he was just like, yeah, I can take Canty George from the three-point line to the block and finish inside. And then he pulled up that last one from a thousand feet away.
I know those logos at half-court are huge now, but that was deep.
That was a deep ball.
Yeah. He was feeling it.
So 45 for game easy, I think, at this point.
Yeah, leading the league. No big deal.
Yep.
45.
Well, tied.
They're tied.
Oh, that's right. I guess it's highlighted here. Yeah, they're tied. Technically, you're right.
We'll have to find out who wins Will Boy because we're bringing Will Boy back here today. I forgot about it yesterday. All right, my final one, though, here. It's just one game, but the Wizards are the new Lob City.
Yeah, baby.
They're throwing oops left and right. Here's what I counted. We had Sar throw down an alley-oop early off a pick-and-roll with Trey Young. Aiton did the exact same thing early in the second quarter off Trae Young action. Keyshawn George had two alley-oops, one assisted by AD from up top, another coming off a strong Trae Young penetration, chucked it up, he lobbed it, and threw it down. And then we also had a couple other big dunks. Anthony Davis had a couple inside. They were in the highlight variety, but he had a couple. And then Bilal Kulabali had one of the best dunks of the night on a putback attempt off a missed jumper in the fourth quarter. Now the Bucs put up a fight. This was a good game.
This was also an entertaining game. That sort of went down in the wire until the Wizards pulled away in the fourth. But yeah, man, with Trae Young there, there's some strong potential for the new Lob City here with the Zards as they get a win and have a winning record for the first time in 1,423 days.
Wow.
They have not been over 500 since November 2021.
A long time.
That's a very long time. And this was without their number one pick, AJ DeBansa, who was ruled out with an ankle injury. Koulibaly got the start in his place and brought it defensively.
Oh, I thought they were losing. I thought the streak was going to continue. Because it looked good for the Bucs in the first half.
Yeah.
I was like, oh, yeah. I like my over of 25.5 wins. Tyler Hero, absolutely balling 14 first half points. Jaime Jaquez. Looking good.
He was abusing Trae Young early. Trae Young was not ready. Got cut backdoor early on.
Very first play of the season. Backdoor cut. Fouled him on the dunk. Just smacks the stanchion.
I said I was.
Playing defense this year. My bad, guys. Anthony Davis dominated, though. He was the best player on the court. You can tell his body is feeling right because he was bullying guys. He got into his jab step game. At one point he like went between his legs, right to left, then left to right. Got the broadcast. Okay. Drew Gooden couldn't believe that he did that. But DeAndre Ayton kind of helped them win this game as well. I thought like in the fourth quarter, he was a huge part of just basically Trae Young was getting double teamed. They're throwing it down to DeAndre Ayton standing by the rim. And he made shot after shot after shot, flipped the game in the fourth quarter on that run. Trae Young currently
leading the league in assists. We'll see if it maintains for the rest of the year. I also like that Balakulabali was wearing two headbands.
Oh, was he?
Yeah, he had one that keeps his hair.
Back that's like the soccer-style little skinny one, but then he had the stylish big white one as well. It's not quite Tim Thomas, but somebody's trying something new out there.
Yeah, the guys are wearing new things, including coaches. I thought of you, Skeets, because you said Brian Keefe, the Washington Wizard guy, is unrecognizable. Nobody knows who he is. Now it looked like he could have had a disguise on because he was wearing glasses. It's like, oh, whoa, where did those come from? It's a thick frame.
Sort of a Quinn Snyder thick glass. Yeah, a little bit.
I think they're a little more square, but I don't know. Either way, who knows? But yeah, it was weird to see DeAndre come out and perform off the bench because usually he's, I need to be a starter type of guy, but the big man came through.
Anthony Davis, man, we did say this all preseason. We're like, watch, he's going to ball out here for the first little bit. And through one game, he's living up to that hype, whether it's just to all be traded or not. But yeah, look, if the Wizards are going to hit the over like I had them hitting, they have to win these games.
You got to beat the Milwaukee Bucks, who, yeah, they weren't bad, Tass.
No, they weren't bad.
But in the end, you know, they lost by enough.
Yeah, yeah.
The Wizards do have better players. There could be a lot of games like that with this team.
Yeah, it was the fourth quarter that we tore it up.
All right, so it's just one game, but obviously some games we didn't get to.
Yeah, I mean, one over, I am a little worried about Skeets, the Sacramento Kings.
Oh, are you?
A little concerned after one game. Me too, man. Looked like a team that had just seen each other for the first time.
Whoa, you guys are playing here. They should have name tags on.
Hi, I'm Zach.
Hi, I'm Zach. Hi, I'm DeMontis. Darius Acuff. 24 shots. 5 for 24. He only wants to shoot it if he has it. He wants to shoot it if somebody else has it too, but if he has it, for sure he's going to shoot it.
Here's what was exciting about last night.
He needs to take on Draymond's suggestion. Pass it.
I couldn't stop thinking about that clip when I was watching last night. I was like, this is a lot of zero pass possessions.
All three of our nut dust teams picked up the L. So your box, put up a fight, L. your Sacramento Kings, uh, you know, tough start. And then, uh, my, which is oddly yours, but my Chicago bulls, uh, against my actual Toronto Raptors. And they, they've got absolutely. And that, that was over. They had to call timeout, like 79 seconds.
Okay.
Game's over one minute, 19 seconds into the game.
Caleb Wilson with that snake dribble, and then there's a snake in the grass. It's Kawhi Leonard, that snake. Steals it.
Yeah.
And a three, too. We had Scotty Barnes.
Definitely called him the big hand man. Steal by the big hand man.
Yeah, man.
Well, they had their t-shirts last night in Toronto were the claw. It was just Kawhi's hand said, we the north. So, yeah, really leaning into it. I mean, he comes out, he does his thing. Quickly doing this. All of them have like a celebration, but quickly was great. That was really nice to see.
That's who I think is going to benefit a lot by a little bit more attention on other guys. Pick set for that guy. He's going to get open. Nice little drop-offs for Jacoby Walter. Just perfect. The sidesteps, he's going to have a little more space. So it's great to see the Raptors destroy.
A Bulls team in two minutes. There's really no other takeaways from that.
They just destroyed them. It was not a game at all.
Great to see Serge Ibaka in the crowd. Great to see Drake, I guess. He was there.
He was there.
I think from the tip.
Yeah, I think so. Scotty Barnes did the old, like, as a lot of them do at home in the first game, like address the crowd. Let's have a great season. Scotty Barnes dropped the what do, baby. Dropped the Kawhi.
He had real moves as he was introduced, like with the feet.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He was kind of dancing.
He was feeling it. Also, I mean, actually all of them, and we did say this, we ripped on the jerseys, but these, what do they call them? Obsession warm-ups and stuff. They look pretty cool on most of the teams. The Raptors ones, those are fire, man.
Yeah, man.
They look awesome.
The NBA did good.
Yeah, I'm with you.
Yeah, I can't wait. What are you guys, which team are you going to get? Or are they too young to look?
I'm not getting any of them. They're way too expensive.
What, the jackets? All that stuff is crazy expensive. Even the t-shirt's like an 80 bucks. Yeah.
Cutoffs are 95, I think. I think you can get the t-shirt for like 45. I'm getting a Kings one.
Okay. Nut dust jerseys for all of us. Warm-ups, I guess.
Just one question. Suns Blazers. Not about the basketball because that was not really a game. A question about Denny Avdia. Last year discussed the starburst that he was grabbing from the scorer's table. He would grab a starburst. Has Tom Dundon done away with Starburst?
He cut back on candy?
Yeah, because the thing he grabs looks like a long piece of gum. No, I don't think he's cut back on Starburst and the different colors, but I do want to know what Danny Avdia grabs. When he goes to the bench, he takes out his mouth guard and then he grabs, it looks like a long stick of gum, but I thought he was a Starburst guy.
Like a Wrigley piece of gum?
Yeah, any of those. There's lots of those.
Any of those.
Like an extra or whatever.
Juicy fruit.
Did we talk about every game? Address every game?
Hawks magic.
Hawks magic.
Yeah.
Nikhil Alexander-Walker. Some big shots. Aaron Wiggins closing for the Hawks.
Yeah.
A little surprising to me. And the Hornets beat the Nets.
Yeah, and the Nets had their ABA jerseys in court. It looked good. It did look good.
Yeah, the debate going into the season as we talked about the 7th, 8th, 9th best teams in the Eastern Conference. Who's better, the Hawks or the Magic?
Hawks.
I know you're a Hawks fan. They beat them. Yeah, maybe I was underestimating. I was underestimating the Hawks a little bit. And we shouldn't. They're running back the same team. They scored 72 first half points against the Magic. That's way too many in Orlando opening night. That was unfortunate for them.
I think Onyeka Okungwu had the dunk of the night too. I know Brandon Miller got it on NBA's top 10. It was a fine dunk. I've seen Brandon Miller. He's got like 20 better dunks than that one last night. Okungwu, man, that alley-oop.
The alley-oop.
He cocked that back. That was a hell of a catch and finish. I thought that was huge.
And that was Jalen Johnson throwing a left-hand pass too. It was all very nice. Yeah, that was unfortunate for the Magic, who I thought Would be an over team and Sean Sweeney's on it. They're going to make some adjustments, but Jalen Sucks made so many mistakes out there. Also a guy who shaved his head. He could have a Harry's.
Yeah, he could have a Harry's.
He could have a Harry's.
Paolo looks cooler. He looks in better shape and I like the haircut. He just looks more physically dominant. Doesn't look as slumpy.
I 100% agree.
And he played well, too.
Yeah, the hairstyle is kind of like Kawhi's, right? Just kind of like a blowout.
Sort of.
I thought it was even a little cleaner, almost, on Paolo than it used to be.
Brandon Miller didn't have the best dunk score of the night. I'm sure you knew that already. That was the best dunk score, yeah.
84.
It can be beat.
It was a fine dunk, but it wasn't on anybody. It was just down the lane, wasn't it?
Unless I'm misremembering. It looked pretty because of the cock back.
He's got he has some crazy dunks on yes he does he's got a good mixtape yeah it looks nice and they got the win like you said coming through okay we now touched on every single game is that true yeah i think we sort of did we sort of did uh of the night the fantasy line of the night i forgot to do it yesterday i probably would have given it to shay shay had a pretty damn good line Yeah, because he had three blocks, three steals too, right?
So, okay.
Retroactively to Shea, but last night to Ty Jerome. Obviously between Ant and Ty Jerome. I mean, I gotta go Ty just because I know Ant's going to get more.
Whoa, boys.
This could be it for Ty Jerome, but maybe not.
Maybe not.
Career high 45 points, 17 to 25 from the field, five to 10 from deep, six to seven at the line, seven rebounds, six assists, and one block in 32 minutes. So not bad. I got a little trivia for you if you guys want.
Okay.
He joined a couple guys as the only players in Grizzlies history to score at least 45 points in a game. You probably know one. He did it three times. Can you name the other two guys now in addition with Ty Jerome?
Did Pau Gasol do it?
No.
How about Desmond Bain?
He did it once.
He did it once.
And one more?
We got one more.
Rudy Gay? Nope.
That's a good guess.
I wonder what he I'm shooing with my left hand. I don't want to say Mike Conley. I don't want to say it.
No, he's not left-handed.
I don't think this guy.
So Zach Randolph also out.
Mike Miller?
Mike Miller, correct. Good poll. John Morant three times, Mike Miller, Desmond Bain, and now Ty Jerome.
It's a big day for Mike Miller. Mentioned here, and also I believe it's his agency that signed a new agent, according to Shams Sharif. Hold on.
Agency signed a new agent? Shams is breaking that news?
Any agent gets news. But maybe I'm conflating. Lyft Sports Management. No, that's not his. That's not his. I take back. But hey, what about veteran NBA agent Andy Miller joining Lyft Sports Management?
What about it?
Hold on. Hold on.
Isn't it?
It's Let It Fly.
Yeah.
So that might be it. Maybe that's the new acronym. Lyft. Let It Fly. Let It Fly. You're right.
You named it.
Let it fly team maybe yeah sure what's the t team maybe team oh yeah the team i guess i'm just saying i have no idea.
I guess i guess that's what it is you were right man.
Lift that's big news man we should have started the show with.
That that's where it came from let it fly yeah.
Let it fly there all.
Right before we dive into tonight's pick them a quick word from kelsey you've heard of them because with kelsey It's simple. You're trading yes or no on real world events. We stick to sports generally here, generally here at no dunks, but you got elections, you got pop culture, you name it. And the price tells you what everyone else thinks is going to happen. It's peer to peer baby trade $ 25 with promo code. No dunks and Kelsey will offer new users another 55 bucks on the spot trade responsibly. So into the pick them tonight's game. There's only two on tonight.
We go from 11 to two. We could space these out a little bit more. But anyway, we say that all the time. Nuggets at Thunder and OKC, by way of Kelsey there, got the Thunder as favorites by eight and a half points. That's the line. Pretty big.
Yeah, you think it's too big?
I thought it was a little big. It's pretty big. I mean, that's why I went Denver. You thought it was too big?
That's why I took the Nuggets.
Hey, hey, look at me, peer to peer. You thought it was too big?
Hey, let it fly, Thunder. Uh, you can do.
It.
We're just, we're all streaming here. Trey wrote, let it fly, Tess. Let it fly, Trey. Let it fly, Trey. Let it fly, Trey. There you go.
Oh, it's let it fly Thursday. Just like pick whatever pick you want.
All right, so you got the thunder. You think when big, I mean nine plus, it's big.
That's chunky. That's a chunky boy for sure, but they're good. I think they're, I favor the thunder over the nuggets and the depth, you know, home opener. People are excited.
Home opener is true. Who gets on the mic? It's probably Shea, right?
Hey, everybody. Is that your Shea? Yeah.
He's got a deep voice.
Hey, cut me. Cut me, Mark. I'm Shea Gilchrist-Alexander, the best boxer in the world.
All right, you got OKC.
Yeah, I went back to Denver's games against OKC last year, and OKC beat them for the three games that really mattered, but they're close the first one was by 10 so not good then there was an ot win then a three-point win so i went with that i went with denver that being said last year to start the season the thunder had those two overtime games so you know two close games but then you come out and spank the spurs it's a different team maybe they follow it up with another big one i think i should have taken okc i should have yeah thunder's a good we're.
Gonna backdoor cover this one like you won't believe OKC will be up like 16, and then, you know, there'll be some dumb baskets at the end.
We'll cut it down.
Watch.
That's what's going to happen.
So ESPN doubleheader, Cavs Sixers at seven, followed by that game, our pick-em game, Nuggets Thunder.
I got to include this. Go ahead. Let it fly. Ty Jerome from KNNTH 201. I mean, that's a good one. Perfect night, you know.
Perfect timing. All right.
That's it for today's No Dunks. We're back tomorrow. Guess what's back? The Drop. Our Friday podcast. We haven't done rapid fire questions in an eternity. So, hey, let's decide right here on the spot. Who wants to write rapid fire questions tomorrow? Who wants to ask the questions?
Anybody? Anybody?
I'll do it.
Let it fly, Trey. Nice.
Nice. All right, Trey's asking the rapid fire questions tomorrow. We'll have the answers. We'll talk about tonight's games. You know, get your questions in, too. Maybe we'll do a little beach stepping.
You never know.
