All right, everybody, this is Anthony Reeves again and I want to welcome you back since we talked again about little tips that can affect your Social Security benefits after you've won. The last three videos we talked about were child support, warrants, and workers. Come today, we're going to talk about veterans benefits. Let me break this down to you first and Foremost veterans benefits fall into two categories as they relate to Social Security. There are service connected and non service connected. This is what I tell people all the time. Non service connected disability benefit excuse me, non service connected benefits will affect your Social Security Service connected will not. Here's how it works now, and it's still

not as clean as you think. I told you a thousand times that there's a variety of different disability programs under Social Security, but really the ones that everybody I'm most familiar with are disability Insurance benefits, which is the one where you work and you pay into the system, and then Supplemental Security Income that's what we call SSI. That's a need based program. For our purposes, I'm going to start with the easiest one first, SSI. SSI is a need based program it's a need based program. And so as a result of it being a knee based program, the grand scheme of thing, any money you get from anywhere is going to reduce benefits under SSI. So in other words, it's like this, Let's say, for instance, you get six

hundred bucks FM SSI and you get three hundred dollars a month from the VA. It doesn't matter if it's service connected or non service connected. That three hundred dollars is going to be subtracted from your Social Security SSI check. Okay, Now that one, it doesn't matter supplemental security or SSI. It doesn't matter whether it's service connected or non service connected. If you get money from any other source, it's going to cut those benefits as a result. It's a direct one to one, okay. So that sets aside, hopefully that it's clear to you. But let's say, for instance, you've worked, you paid into the system, so you're now getting what we call disability insurance benefits. That's different that your disability benefits will be reduced based on the type

of program you're falling under for the VA. So it's like this, let's say you're getting six hundred dollars a month six hundred dollars a month, and disability insurance benefits that means benefits based on what you paid into the system. And then you're getting three hundred dollars in service connected benefits. That means the benefits you're getting from the VA are as a result of some injury or illness of something that occurred while you were on active duty. Well, that three hundred dollars won't impact the six hundred dollars you're getting from disability insurance benefits.

Why because since it's a service connected benefit under the regulations, that money is not going to hit against your social security. Now let's say you had what we call a non service connected disability pension, meaning it's non service connected benefits, and it's three hundred dollars, Well, that three hundred dollars is now going to hit on your Social Security. That means now you're going to reduce your Social Security about three hundred bucks. It gets. It's not really that crazy, I tell people, really, it's very straightforward. It's a lot more straightforward than workers com benefits. But just think of it like this.

If you're drawing SSI, I don't care if it's VA benefits or anything. You're getting money from any of the source, they're going to reduce your SSI benefits by that dollar amount that you're getting from a third source, so or a second source, however you want to say it. So if you are found disabled and you start drawing SSI benefits and you get VA benefits as well, they're going to subtract those Social Security benefits from your SSI. Now we're going to talk about it a little bit later on what happens, not tonight but or today excuse me, but later on what happens when you're benefits or disappear. But for purposes right now, to keep in mind SSI, if you get money from any source, especially we're talking about VA right now,

service connected or non service connected is going to reduce the dollar amount. If you're getting disability under the Disability Insurance Benefits program, that you need to make a distinction. When you're talking to the VA. You need to know are my benefits service connected or non service connected. If it's non service connected, I'm going to lose some money. If it's service connected, I should be fined for purposes of disability insurance benefits.
