The Forgotten Korean War Defectors

Most people know the story of the Korean War as a stalemate that froze the peninsula in place, but there was another war happening right alongside it—one fought by those who refused to stay. In this episode, we explore the lives of the North Korean refugees who defected across the DMZ during the conflict and beyond, seeking freedom in the South. We look at figures like General Lee Yong-ho and the early intelligence networks that helped shape South Korea’s security state. From the dangerous crossings along the Imjin River to the political purges that sometimes followed their arrival, we examine the human cost of choosing sides when the guns fell silent. This is a story of courage, betrayal, and the long shadow of the division that still haunts East Asia today.
