The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Let's take a look now at some of the stocks on the move today in Asia. I'm Caroline Hepkin. Joining me is Bloomberg's markets reporter, Anthony Stevens. Good morning, Anthony. SK Hynix seems to just have jump-started AI optimism again today. How big of a blockbuster were these results? We really have to think about size and scope and scale here, Anthony.
Yeah, record results again.
They beat on what was very elevated estimates already on the operating income side and on the sales side. So continue to see very strong growth. A lot of that growth is locked in. They have long-term agreements out to five years with their major customers. They continue to see a memory shortage out to 2030. And that's just the demand side. Actually, what got the shares running intraday was a technological update. They are moving over to HBM4, which is the cutting edge of the HBM memory cycle earlier than people.
Expected into the fourth quarter.
They also said that they have no problem manufacturing it in contrast to the Chinese players who are struggling to catch up to one generation before this. So that was a real clear runway for monetization that people really like to see. They also said that HBM margins are starting to catch up to the DDR5 stuff that people were worried about. They thought that Hynix had been too trigger-happy moving to the new standard away from the old standard when the old standard was making money.
That's alleviated that as well.
So Hynix up 10%, Samsung up around 10% as well. We await Samsung's results tomorrow. and kyokusha in japan up 14 ahead of its own earnings uh later in the week so the memory trade really getting jolted awake here and that pretty much supported the kospi move up around nearly seven percent at.
The highs yeah it's extraordinary isn't it these numbers i had to ask my second brain that is now what i've dubbed ask b the ai function on the blue bag terminal which is about uh how you compare this $ 62. 5 billion profit, quarterly profit, the best quarter ever of any company in the FTSE 100, BP, that was back in 2005, only about $ 31. 4 billion. Alphabet, Google's parent company, of course, recorded the highest ever single quarter profits, $ 112 billion.
That was much more recent, 2026.
But I mean, it's just staggering numbers compared twice the record profit of any company in the FTSE 100 ever. In terms of the broader tech sector, how is that faring then this morning? I mean, I've been using all kinds of superlatives, the AI trade taking far again.
Yeah, so it's been interesting that while the memory trade was buoyed by these results and obviously the implicit guidance, there had been some pretty strong news into the session anyway from OpenAI and Oracle in particular as they look to diversify away from the NVIDIA kind of ecosystem into Google's TPUs and Intel's CPUs. So we just really see this expansion of computing across every single available platform, even down to kind of speculative players like Cerebrus, right? That stock was up 10% in the U.S. So associated plays across printed circuit boards and substrates were very strong in Asia.
We had Samsung Electromechanics up almost 9 percent. We had Ibidene up around 8 percent. We have Nanya Plastics in Taiwan up 7 percent.
So these are really big moves. Even China got in the act today.
Finally, Chinex was up 3 percent, led by some of these optical plays in China that connect all these servers together. Those plays were up around 5 to 6 percent.
Yeah. And then everybody's trying to, you know, get into the tech trade, aren't they? Jio in India, massive IPO today.
How's it going? Jio is from another generation of tech.
It was the first kind of telco to really bring data costs down in India, pretty much making sure that you can find high-quality data almost anywhere in India now. That stocks up 21% real validation of that pricing model and the kind of dispersion in India of that technology. Remember, this is the company that is under the crosshairs of Elon Musk, who wants to enter India with the Starlink.
So it's very interesting to see Jio trade this well.
Unfortunately, for the broader Indian market, it has sucked liquidity out of the market, especially in the tech trade on the software side.
The software side.
In India has been trading on the other end of the semi-trade and that space is down very sharply today. Infosys is down 4%, TCS down to a half, HCL Tech down 2%.
