Shownotes
We tend to talk about the nervous system as if it belongs entirely to one person: my trauma, my attachment style, my healing. But none of us developed in isolation. From our earliest relationships, our nervous systems are learning what connection costs, whether people are available, and what we need to do to stay connected. And those lessons don't stop at the family. Classrooms, friendships, communities, and cultures all teach us something about belonging, conflict, power, and expression.
In this episode, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof are joined by Will Rezin, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, certified professional coach, and founder of Formative Somatics, to explore how much of what we call personality, relationship, and collective behavior is really nervous systems adapting to the worlds they grew up in. Drawing on the work of Stanley Keleman, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Will shares why attachment patterns aren't fixed traits but intelligent adaptations that can change through repeated new experiences in relationship.
Together they explore how culture and language shape what we can perceive, why shame runs so hot in a world that's globally connected but relationally disconnected, and why the ability to feel an emotion without being taken over by it is a skill we can only build in the presence of another. They also talk about the ripple effect of small, kind moments with strangers, learning to receive love in the way others actually give it, and why we are living processes rather than machines that can be reset.
Will opens up about the rupture and long repair with his mother, and what it's been like to co-create and co-teach an attachment training together. The conversation closes with spirituality, the illusion of separation, and remembering that we are connected to something greater than ourselves.
