Shownotes
Let's go to prison! This episode, we cover Book Three, chapters 14 and 15, "The Boiling Rock" Troy apparently hates the name “Boiling Rock” and would rather have Friends-style episodic titles like “The One Where Sokka Gets a Sword”. Jordan is curious about Zuko’s redemption. Katie loves the dynamic between Zuko and Sokka. Troy believes Azula had a “Powerpuff Girl” moment and is creeped out by The Warden. Katie loves Zuko trying to be wise and philosophical. Troy has trouble with today’s slang. Katie gives heart-eyes for Sokka’s heart-eyes. Everyone agrees Suki is fantastically hardcore. Troy and Jordan argue over gravity-defying stunts in these episodes. The Blu-Ray subtitles typo "hot squats" as "hop squats" but Jordan still wants to do them and feel the burn and addresses the single worst Sokka moment in the series. Katie thinks Boiling Rock would have made for a wild series finale.

Water.
Earth. Fire. Air. This is what we This is yuppie. That's our podcast.
I don't. Hey, I don't really like night. My name's Troy. I just you know, I went to bed early and I got up early and now I'm here. Okay, say something.
Okay, well, what are the numbers?
God, Bruce Wayne, what are you doing here? Yeah. Do you know this guy? He dresses up as a mammal that flies every night. Have you ever seen him or heard of him? Doles out some vigilante justice. You can tell me the numbers or not? Has a guy on the inside. I wanna know the numbers, goddammit. What numbers?
Oh, the podcast.
Your wife keeps making a big deal.
Who is my wife? Who is your wife?
She just keeps making a big deal about it.
So we have reached 2,000 downloads total. What? Yeah. That's pretty good. Man. So, friends who are listening, we know there's a group of you in Antelope, California, wherever that is. Thank you so much for listening. We appreciate it. And with that, welcome back to Yip Ya Parade, an Avatar podcast. It's me, Katie.
It's me, Troy.
It's me, Jordan.
Whoa! Why do I sound like I'm Bozo the clown? Is that what you sound like, too? No, I'm just kidding.
Troy, does your eye still itch? Yes, it does. Yeah, it looks red.
Thank you. Oh, Troy's got to be. So for those of you for those of you that cannot see me, I got two red eyes because we got allergy season going on. Yep. In late October. My favorite allergy season.
Garyby. Gary Be what? So this episode we covered parts one and two of Boiling Rock. Boiling Rock. Uh yeah, that is correct. We covered The Boiling Rock, which is. I think it's the moment in the series where Zuko actually redeems himself.
Yeah. I was kind of going into it like this is the dumbest name for an episode. What?
Why?
The Boiling Rock.
It's the name of the prison.
They could have said like the Fire Nation Volcanic Prison. That is the dumbest name I've ever heard.
The Fire Nation Volcanic Prison Part One.
They tried to invade the Fire Nation part one. Anglern's Firebending. Those are just the episodes. Just some like fact about the episode. Sokka gets a sword. The Boiling Rock Part One. Katara loses her hair loopies, part one. Move on. Do you agree that this is the episode that Zuko redeemed himself officially?
Um, you know. Troy shrugs. Screw that guy. Screw that guy. Yeah. Do you think that Zuka redeemed himself in the Western Air Temple or the Firebending Masters? Or in the Day of Black Sun wherein he like smack talked his dad.
I think he redeemed himself officially when they showed off their dance to the twin dragons, and they were and he was finally able to do his firebending out of joy and curiosity rather than anger.
But I would say that's not redeeming himself to like the heroes of the story. I think that was his own personal redemption of like finding the true meaning of firebending. Well, I mean, I think the Boiling Rock episodes showed that he is actually committed to the journey of the team Avatar.
Right. No, I didn't I didn't care whether or not he was committed, because if the the second he screws up, Katara or Sokka was gonna take him down. I think just Katara was gonna take him down.
Yeah, I don't think Sokka's gonna do that, especially now.
Yeah, no, I think Zuko and Sokka have gone through something together.
No, this episode, Zuko has already has already redeemed himself.
So you think going into this episode, Zuko has been redeemed?
Yes. Oh, we opened. I was just more curious as to like Sokka has got he's trying he's he's a jokey kind of guy. Zuko is a jokey kind of guy. Yeah.
Yeah, he told a joke at the beginning of the episode. I know.
And I was just like, Oh man, what kind of inside jokes are they are they're gonna make on this episode? Ew, it started off so awkward.
But that tea, what kind of tea do you think he made?
Uh Jasmine, duh. Bergamot. Oh well, it's not bergamot tea, it's Earl Grey. Uh Bergamot is the f is the fruit. It'd be a f for fruit tea. He made a bergamot tea. Katie, do you think Zuko. What at what point has Zuko been redeemed up to this point? Did he redeem himself in the boiling rock or did he redeem himself in front of the dragons?
I don't think he's redeemed himself.
You don't think Okay. Guys, listen here.
I think Zuko redeemed himself because Zuko has been putting us through the ringer this whole time. He gets your hopes up, and then he kind of like slips anyway.
So every episode I'm like, look, I kind of sort of scrubbed Zuko off after he betrayed Iroh. That he'll never redeem himself from that, but as far as his attitude goes, I'm like, alright, fine, I'll go along with it.
Are we allowed to make certain mistakes in our life to the people we love? And aren't we able to be on a path to correct those and redeem ourselves?
Absolutely.
So my opinion on Zuko redeeming himself in the Boiling Rock is that we see Zuko, he's he's committed to Sokka's plan and he is doing something uh selflessly to help out Sokka and these people that he well, he does owe them. So I mean, Zuko definitely owes them something, but he's also not doing it for his own personal gain.
He's doing it to help out these people that he is trying to win back over. And I I don't think Zuko wavered at all in this whole episode.
No. And to add on to that, and I can see why you you would think that he redeemed himself officially in this episode. This is the first episode, he's been himself without trying to regain his father's honor. Now he's trying to help Sokka regain his honor. And Zuko's like, Yep, I can relate, Broski. Let's do this.
No, no, no. So quick.
I was gonna say, uh, I thought it was a very selfless Zuko episode. I mean, because you don't really see too much of that. When we see Zuko, it's like about Zuko and his BS. And obviously we get a little bit of that of his drama, but not very much. Like he was very like, yeah, he was waiting in the uh Apa basket, waiting for Sokka.
Oh, you know that he slept there all night waiting for Sokka.
But then he had to like wake up really quickly, like, hey, oh yeah, you're uh not not leaving. I don't know, whatever he says.
I mean, it's interesting to think that if Sokka had been left alone to his own devices, he would have taken Apa and tried to rescue his father by himself, and without the help of Zuko, that whole thing would have been much more difficult.
Any of the benders, like, to me that would have made Sokka unredeemable. Wait, why? How selfish. You're just gonna go right off to save your dad without taking anybody who can bend anything. Anything, and you're gonna rescue your dad, who may or may not be at this prison with a sword.
Well, right, and he didn't tell anybody.
Didn't tell anybody. Yeah, I'm just like, no, that no, don't do that. So you did tell him he went on a fishing trip.
I was trying to remember So he lied. Right. Yeah, that's not great.
No, unredeemable.
Uh, I was trying to remember if like Aang and the gang ended up showing up because I couldn't remember. But yeah, obviously they don't because they have no idea where they are. Yeah. Moving on. I really enjoyed Sokka and Zuko's dynamic in this pair of episodes. But definitely the first one. And they're having their awkward air balloon ride and talking about their girlfriends.
Yeah. So since this show has battles, but nobody really dies during those battles, they just kind of get incapacitated or whatever. Dang. You know? I'm just like, I'm am I the only one that was like, so it's a Fire Nation prison, but what kind of prisoners are they holding here? What do these people do wrong?
Because a lot of those prisoners, even the biggest, baddest looking dudes are pretty big softies.
I mean that might I think that tracks just in real life, too.
Yeah, and we don't know what kind of corrupt prison system the Fire Nation might have.
And I'm like, Yeah, I'm saying they're thinking like, so are these Fire Nation citizens? Are these Firebenders? Are these earth benders? I'm like, what kind of prison is this? That's what the Fire Nation prison system is confusing to me.
Troy needs the backstory.
Well, it seems like most of it is, like Zuko says, it's uh it's a high security prison for like the the worst criminals in the Fire Nation, or so he believes. And it's also interesting that they do have like cage the leaders of any sort of opposition in there. Like they only captured Suki because she was the leader and put her in that that prison cell.
Chief Okoda, they put her in put him in there because he was the leader. It was interesting that the pirate was there because that was 100% one of the pirates from the water bending master. And it wasn't like the lead pirate. He was just like the thuggy pirate. So I'm not quite sure why he what what he was up to, what kind of shenanigans.
Yeah, so basically it's not exactly the prison for the worst, most dangerous prisoners.
They're just Well, it could be. These are just they're not that many crimes happening.
No, they're just influential prisoners.
The fire, yeah. Uh yeah, influential prisoners for sure. Influential prisoners. Did you pick up the uh the comparisons to any real life prisons with the boiling rock? I want to say Guantanamo Bay? Oh. Didn't think about that. Uh it definitely pulls from Alcatraz.
Oh, gotcha.
Because Alcatraz also had no one ever escape from Alcatraz.
Not even Capone. No. Wow. Oh, that's right. Capone lost his mind there.
We all lose our mind in Alcatraz. But like so, I was reading because the boiling rock, the idea is like the boiling water surrounding it is inescapable. It kind of felt like a boiling version of Crater Lake in Oregon. I was getting some Crater Lake vibes. It's funny you say that. I I could see that. Yeah, so if you guys ever want to go to the boiling, well, I mean, it's cold.
It's not it's not boiling just a bunch of water that's been collected over centuries into this uh crater. Into this crater. Okay. But uh though the water surrounding Alcatraz is like super cold, so it's that that's a reason that it's like pretty much inescapable. Oh gotcha. Is was currently. Don't go to Alcatraz, kids.
Okay, what do you think about the cool air, Troy?
Oh, that totally weirdly enough, that made me think of geez, like not much different than the concentration camps. The fact that they purposely put him in a place that they they cannot firebend. Matter of fact, they're actually absolutely miserable in this thing, and the guards actually get off on how much they are miserable.
The prisoners are miserable in the cooling system. I hate being cold, so I could really feel it for uh Chit Sang.
Aww, Chit Sang. Well, it was interesting because uh, as series lore goes, a day in the cooler takes away your firebending for an entire week. Is is how it's supposed to work. So it was interesting that uh Zuko was still able with his breath of fire technique that we first saw in Siege of the North. Remember, Prince Zuko, use our breath of fire technique, can save your life out there.
Yeah, I love that part. When Zuko uh shows off that he's fine in the cooler, you get like the uh like Sungi horn, like the Zuko, the Zuko sound comes back. Yeah. Also, is Zuko mechanically minded also? Like Right.
I was like, I don't know if I believe that you were able to take all those nuts and bolts.
That's what I'm saying. Like these two episodes in general just made me go like, I don't, I'm not buying it. That's just defying the laws of grav of uh of physics, even for a cartoon. I'm just like, what the hell, guys?
Well, okay, so your issue is coming from Azula using jet propulsion in this episode, which I totally buy. I mean, Azula's a really powerful bender that can shoot out really hot firebending.
I wrote down that was called Blue Blast Off Power.
Blue Blast Off Power, that's right.
That's right, and Azula's just like powering off. And it's the new Mountain Dew.
She's got the new Mountain Dew flavor coming out this fall.
Blue Blastoff Power.
That's awesome. She's uh she had a totally uh Powerpuff Girl moment. Was she Bubbles? Was she Mojo Jojo? Well, she is a people person. Well, she's full of chemical acts.
You know who did look like Mojo Jojo? The warden. The warden! I could not believe how much they shaped that dude to look like a chimpanzee.
Did he look like Mojo Jojo?
Yeah, they'd have like a biggest freaking face, and like, dude, that's just creepy.
The warden did have some uh definitely exaggerated features. I enjoyed the warden as a villain in this episode. He was pretty malicious.
I agree. I agree.
Yeah, it's pretty boring. His voice actor, he's pretty boring. His voice actors apparently. I cannot be impressed as we've addressed especially with blue powered jet propulsion power. That just made me mad. I was like, really? The voice actor of the warden, he is also he was a voice he was an actor in the show Prison Break, so I don't know if they got him because he was in a show called Prison Break.
I've never really been interested in like prison break movies or shows, but I love the Boiling Rock episodes.
No, they no, Prison Break, those kind of prison like shows, like they're definitely depressing to watch. I just heard like the biggest catch of that show is that the brother, I was gonna say the other brother had a tattoo of the blueprints of the prison on his back. And that was the whole premise of the show.
Wait, what? What?
That's like some national treasure stuff going on. Seriously, no, no.
I got the blueprints.
The blueprints of this prison on my tattooed on my back. I'm gonna break you out by but on my if I hope the other brother can read knows how to read blueprints.
Well, if he's just like Sokka, then you're fine. Yeah. Right. Okay, bringing it back to the awkward bro moment with Sokka and Zuko, uh, one of the best lines in the whole series is in that moment where Sokka goes, My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
That's pretty rough, buddy.
That's pretty rough, buddy. That's rough, buddy.
unknown Oh god.
That's rough, buddy.
That's rough.
But I do appreciate that they we we play up this like awkwardness between Sokka and Zuko because Zuko is slowly hanging out with everybody.
Yes.
Hung out with Aang, hung out with Sokka, hung out with Suki.
So Yeah, and they gotta address.
He's just gotta hang out with Toph.
They gotta address Suki and Zuko's uh troubled past. Right. Oh, you burned down our village or whatever.
Do you remember that in the the first time we meet Suki, the Warriors of Kyoshi episode, where Zuko just goes berserk on the rhino and like just recklessly burns down Kyoshi Island?
Such a jerk. Because he still has Ponytail, so he's a very forgettable character during that season.
Zuko was not a forgettable character. For me, he was.
Wow, you remembered him.
No, I remembered Iroh.
Oh, whatever.
Oh, easy to say now.
I'm sorry, but being memorable and disliking a character is very different. I feel like we're gonna lose listeners because of how much I keep ditching on Zuko. I'm so sorry, guys.
Ditching? Ditching on him or dissing?
Dissing, ditching.
Ditching is when you He's dissing and ditching.
Ditching you, Zuko. Okay, okay.
Wait, wait, wait. I love that we get a lot of like Zuko motivational talks in these episodes. What did my uncle say? Right.
He's like really trying to pump pump up the group. Yeah, they say clouds. There's a light side and a dark side and uh silver lining in between. So when things get you down, just take a bite of that silver sandwich. Sokka's like not listening. He's not paying attention. But you said made no sense at all.
But Zuko felt pretty good about it. He's like, oh yeah, it did work.
Good job, me. I'm glad I'm glad uh Troy isn't ditching me right now. Okay, what did you think about finding Suki?
Okay. Are you going by Urban Dictionary uh definition of ditching? Because I need to know now. What? No, I don't read Urban Dictionary. I'm not 13. Well, I do. Oh, you're not? It's still a thing. Now, what is ditching before we move on?
I don't know. If you're gonna ditch somebody, like Troy, you I go, hey Troy, let's go get some ice cream and then I leave without you. Okay, because that's ditching. Okay, because also ditching could be I dug a trench in the ground and then I put you in it. That could also be ditching.
Because the way I've heard it really been said recently, because right now it feels like they're coming out with words I have no idea what they're saying. Ditching could have meant dis No, it's called twerking, Troy.
Twerking is that.
It's uh Okay.
What did you think about me finding Suki in the boiling rock?
It was interesting seeing her without her without any makeup on.
This is the second time we've seen her without any makeup on.
I feel like you also thought it was interesting then. Every time you're like, Suki, put some makeup on. Uh but Sokka's like crazy hard eyes. Fantastic. Loved that moment.
So were you in tears when this thing finally aired eight months after its hiatus? No, I was mad. So you're watching the prison ride. Hands crossed. So as you are watching the these guys duke it out in in both episodes, you're just like duking it out on somebody in your household.
Like somebody in my household? No, I'm not abusing anybody. I'm not ditching anybody, Troy. I'm not twerking on anybody.
Okay.
Okay, so back to Suki. Did you remember that they re meet up with Suki again?
Yes.
Aww.
I did. I remembered that they met up with Suki, but I had forgotten just how hardcore Suki was or is. And yeah, it was really good to see her like working out, doing some kicks, like crawling up that wall. It was like, what is happening?
So watching Suki practice her Kyoshi war moves in the prison cell reminds me of, I think it was Friday afternoon. I got like this Friday afternoon? This last Friday afternoon. I it's been it's been about six years since I've done any sort of Taekwondo. So the other day I was practicing some of those basic, basic kicks at my house, and Val pulled my hamstring.
I'm just like, yeah, if you don't practice often, you lose it really quickly.
Yeah, I could relate to that.
So I'm just like watching her in a prison uh that I was watching that scene. Like, watch out for your hammies, Suki. Stretch. And I was like, I was like, I was like, oh, that's right. You know, she's just using her arms for the most part, except for her good stances. If that was me, I'd be like practicing kicks in a prison cell, pulling my pulling my muscles like on every kick, like, ow.
Well, maybe she's been doing that every day.
Okay, arguably you're twice as old as Suki is. Okay, fair enough. Okay. Suki is ridiculously capable. She is like, there this show is fantastic.
You're telling me that girl is 14 years old?
I don't know how well thank you for doing the math drawing. She well, yeah, I had to do the math. Okay, Suki's probably like 16. Okay. So she's half Katie's age.
Great.
So Suki is like ridiculously capable. This show is so phenomenal with how it's portraying like female characters and how capable they are, especially when it came out. Like, we gotta remember like this episode aired in 2008, back in the day when like having like strong female characters, let alone like a whole cast of strong, capable female characters.
Episode came out in 2008? Yeah. Well, whoa. Now that makes so much more sense. We had got the Dark Knight, one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.
Alright, Troy, I'm gonna put a pin in that. I got a Suki rant.
Hold on.
Yes, you do. Okay. No, it's just like they they created Suki to be this like fantastic, capable character who uh I think we they almost feel like they need to remind you that Suki doesn't need to be taken care of because Sokka comes in and he's like, Oh, I'm gonna save you. And they do that quick reversal of like, no, no, no, Suki's got this.
Suki's gonna save your butt in this episode. I mean, it was crazy. Ty Lee, who has like taken down everybody in this series so far with her like chi blocking, could not get a blow on Suki. Like, she's just like, Yeah, she's scaling walls. They did such a good job of like showing her do that, especially like the the minute like bits that Suki does.
Like she crawls up the wall and then uses like the let like the momentum from her body to latch her feet onto the bar to like propel herself up. Yeah, it's amazing. She's jumping on people's heads. She is so fantastic as a character, and it just makes me wish that they had recruited Suki in episode four.
Again, this episode just defied the laws of physics to the part where I just was like No no no.
I think whatever Suki did, I believe that Suki did everything. I mean, she's really light. I mean, she was stepping on meatheads' heads, and then you don't know like what kind of grooves were in the side of the boiling rock for her to like scale up. I mean, Suki, as series lore goes, has been training with the Kyoshi Warriors since age eight.
And then she's ten now. And then if you could have seen the look on Troy's face. And then you got Tylee running on the She's a tightrope walker. That makes sense. Troy, I'm gonna take down every one of your arguments.
You might as well. Because I'm just I don't have much to say about these episodes. They were fantastically directed, and everyone has the guy who's had a lot to say about the episodes.
Okay, so what do you think about were you surprised that dad showed up in this episode?
Yes. Cause I never say I'm surprised.
Sasha's shocked. Shocked. Well, did you think they were gonna build up this whole episode of Sokka trying to rescue his father and then have them not reunite?
I pictured it as I don't know why. I'm relying more and more on Aang to like save everybody. Why? Just because he's the avatar. And so I was just expecting as they got closer to escaping that at some point out of nowhere Aang was gonna fly in on an Apa and save them all. But I'm so happy I was wrong.
Yeah, no, I think that's really great to not have like that Deus ex machina to like have the savior come in and to like rescue everyone, so they actually had to like fend for themselves and actually think for themselves.
Is that I'm gonna skip forward just a little bit to Katie's favorite line in this these two episodes. Or do you want to say, Katie?
I have no idea. What's my favorite lion?
So Katie did not Katie and Troy have not discussed favorite lines of the case.
What?
I'm skipping to the second episode.
You s no, say it again. You said they're super high. They're escaping.
Wow. So the stakes are super high. Oh. Everybody is escaping. They're almost there. And the warden yells out, Cut the line, cut the line, because they've taken him as captive. And so then uh Tylee and Azula jump off the tram, leaving the gondola, leaving the warden. And I'm like thinking, I don't how much of an idiot you have to be as a warden or even as prison guards to cut the line, fully knowing that the Fire Lord's daughter is on the gondola.
It's like maybe they could have jumped onto the other rail or to the other gondola. Maybe not. Katie's favorite line. And then out of nowhere, they stop the gondola, and you see May, and and they're like, What are you doing? And she goes, Saving the jerk who dumped me. Katie laughed so hard during that line.
I was actually, but that's that part surprised me was how hard Katie laughed at that line. Wow.
Thank you for that recap. What a sort of thing. I think it was less about that line, more about the delivery. If it's just the whole thing, it was great. Yeah.
Cricket, the voice actress does exist.
Men are so unreliable in those relationships.
I enjoyed May in this episode. Calling out Zuko, they like kinda hashed it out, kinda not. You know. I wish that there would have been a little more, like Zuko could have really explained to her what was going on or why he was doing this, but I feel like maybe she kind of knows. But anyway, but how did she escape, right?
Right. Uh she has those stilettos, those tiny knives. She probably picked the walk, probably.
But no, it was the hardest. Very resourceful to watch her swallow when Zuko the big horse pill that Zuko's like, hey, take this. She's like, So instead of a horse pill, he says, she goes, You're betraying the Fire Nation. And he goes, That's not the way I see it. And that right now, in our current times, we're facing those that same dilemma.
A lot of people are disagreeing on a lot of things, and they're having trouble seeing it the other person's way. So I thought that was pretty deep for a kid's show to say, I'm in the right. No, I'm in the right. Well, that's not the way I see it. This is how I see it.
That's just the thing with perspective. Like you can both be like the hero of your own story, and you can both be doing what you believe is right, but objectively taking a step back and being like, oh, what is like capital T truth? Like, what is what's real here? And May, I mean, she's been engulfed in Fire Nation culture, her father's like a high-ranking governor, her uncle is the warden of the highest security prison.
She exists in a certain reality where she knows what's correct for her country. And so she's bought into this propaganda that the war is all the Fire Nation's plan to just they but I don't even really see it as a war necessarily, just see it as like this conquest to like help the rest of the world. Correct.
Yeah, so I think May really obviously shines in this episode at the end, but I was surprised how emotional I got with May's like turn to help Zuko. I forgot she's the one who stopped them from cutting the line. Completely forgot. And you've seen it how many times? 70.
Me, who's like, you know, knew every time. I knew she was coming. Save the day.
Okay, but Zuko trapping May in the prison cell was rough. I was like, ah, Zuko, come on, man. That eye contact.
I know they're both gonna like cry cry eyes. The only thing that would have made this episode one of the best episodes ever. Dragons. Is if Iroh had just came out of nowhere and helped them escape too. That's a thing. You can't rely on these heroes. But he's not a hero. He's the Iro's a hero.
Iroh's not a hero. He has some salt.
Iro's not a hero.
I'm gonna wreck you. Tell me why Iroh's not a hero right now. Because he's just think of any.
Nope. He helped Zuko redeem himself from within. Okay. But no, he's not a hero in this episode. Well, Aang's not a hero in this episode. Aang's like, oh, sounds like a crazy fishing trip, guys. Yeah, but no, we can't rely on the heroes, but no, I just might have to work out.
Hot squats. Hot squats. I want to do hot squats and I want to feel the burn. Okay.
I just I think they're I appreciate them saving Iroh for another episode to where he can really show off his new abilities. Realness back into the Sokka. We have to, yes. Moving on.
Did you think Chitseng was gonna call out Sokka? Rat him out?
I thought until the very end, and I was like, oh, I know what he's doing.
Did you recognize that that was the guard that c put Chitseng in the case?
That surprised me. Yeah.
He called it that. That was some clever writing. There were some clever reversals in this episode. Oh yes. Great episodes. Fantastic lines. I want to talk about the lines in a minute, but I want to talk about some Kylie. What? Ty Lee? Yeah. What'd she say? She's an alpha. She said they're gonna cut the line!
I think that's literally the only thing Tyler.
Right? The way before Azula messes up May, she jabs her. Azula does not mess up Mei.
Okay, I want to talk about Suki and Sokka. So he comes into her prison cell. Super creepy, by the way. Can we just like recognize that? But then Sokka's game is to do the exact same thing Suki does to him in the Serpent's Pass. Like, oh, you don't recognize me? Maybe you'd recognize this. So he pulls the exact same line on Suki, doesn't work, and she throws him against a wall.
Yeah.
Also, because Troy, we have avoided a Star Wars reference to this point. It's time to pull one out. So Sokka and Zuko land in the on the boiling rock. They're like, oh, we don't have a plan. But then their plan is to dress up as the guards, a la stormtroopers, huh? Kind of Luke and Han, a little new hope action there.
Yeah. Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?
Surprised yet again. All they had to do was say, these helmets are so dumb, I can't see a thing out of them.
Can we talk about how short these teenage characters are compared to like the adults in the series? Like, in this world, do people don't do they not stop aging until they hit like 35? What? Sokka and Zuko and the rest of like the kids in the show were all like mid to late mid-teens. They're all significantly shorter than the adult characters in the series.
I do notice they give the adults abnormally long legs in this cartoon. That's because they modeled them all after me. I have abnormal legs.
I think they just looked short in this episode.
I don't know. They the height differences is like all over the place in the series. Like ever they're always like a head shorter than the adults. Like when Sokka was hanging out with the guards, he was like, he might as well have been on his knees.
Well, we already talked about well, that's true, uh the animation could be better and more consistent.
Well not only that, but I'm thinking as far as kids who don't who don't listen to dialogue and they don't read the subtitles, if they're just going off of the the body language and the way they've uh the composition of the adults. If I was to watch this cartoon and I thought that'd be the best way to distinguish an adult from a kid is to have the adults obnoxiously taller than the kids.
I'd be like, okay, that's the authoritative figure. No, that's definitely true. That's a good a good point. Because I don't I never listened to the TV shows growing up. I just went off of what the characters looked like. Look at that character. Yeah.
I wonder what his intentions are. Look at how short it is. Ah, I can relate to that short thing on the screen. Okay, so Chit Sang, uh, he was named after the the head writer of the first episode. I think her name was Mae Chan. She named uh Chitseng after her father. And this is uh, I think the first episode May Chan did.
And then she did a really good episode. This the writing was so sharp. Yes, it was. What do we think about Chit Sang, like in general? Like we meet him at the beginning of this episode, and then we just hang out with him for the whole two-parter.
I like that he forced himself on the group and it was like, I'm here, and I went in because I went out. And then, yeah, I guess in the end, end up ends up joining the group. Hey guys, I'm new. But I feel like it was like, oh, what do you need? And it was like, oh, we need a riot. And it's like, all right, hey, riot.
That was one of my favorite scenes in this whole series.
Chitseng is so like monotone through that. It's like, hey, riot! And he's like, picked up that dude, and it's just like throwing him in the air.
I know that. I was the only person who's expecting him to throw the dude into the crowd. Hey, catch! Like, no, he did one better. He just throwing the dude up and down over his head, hey, Riot!
Body surf. But can we appreciate that uh Hakoda like attempts to start the prison riot by hitting like the biggest, toughest looking guy.
Hey, that hurt my feelings. Now that oh my god, that surprised me too. Ah, it was great. Alright, watch where you're going. Nobody goes, hey, what'd you push before? That hurt my feelings. What?
Aren't you mad? No. So yeah, the writing in the second part, like just having all these things kind of come together. I just thought all the reversals in this episode. I mean, it was so it was so clever.
The writers obviously had a mission, and that was to write how they wished the biggest, baddest, scariest looking guys in the world acted in real life. They were all sort of level headed and they would not be provoked unless you really honestly provoked them. Like, that's what I saw. Like a few of those geese a few of these geese, a few of these guys, a few of these geese.
I actually found a lot of the prison uh the prisoners likable. Yeah, I mean, just because you're in prison doesn't mean you don't you're not a likable person. Maybe you're not even there for a good reason or any reason.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's a whole other discussion.
So back to some nuts and bolts for these episodes. So Chitseng, he is adamant to bring his girl and his best guy or whatever, along with How'd they get out?
Yeah, how did they get out?
Because Sokka and Suko were like, oh yeah, yeah. So we're like Sokka let Chitseng specifically out. Yeah, producers. And then the girlfriend and the the best friend get there. Yeah, Michael Dante Oh, right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's BS. What what are the producers' names again?
The sh the Well the the creators, Michael Dante Diamartino, and Brian Kenitsko. But they I mean they the head writer for the show is Aaron He has. Aaron, yes, how'd they get out, man? Yeah, man. How'd they get out? Yeah, man. But then Chitseng, and the second part, when the second escape happens, Chitseng no longer cares about the girlfriend and the best friend.
Dead to him. No, right. That was weird. No reference. They don't come with, he's like, every man for himself. I'm Outski.
So do we assume that the girls show up because May hears that Zuko's in prison? I'm assuming so.
And then they're like, let's go. Do they all take the war balloon over? That's my assumption. Like all three? Yeah, because how else did May get there? Right. So what'd you think when Azula showed up?
Uh I was just like, oh boy. Here we go. It's all over. More trouble. In my mind, I was just like, hey, Azula. So I'm like, okay, Aang's gotta show up, or Katara, or somebody's gotta show up to help the game. Like, they just can't get out of there alone. Like, this episode really put a lot of doubt in my mind as to the capabilities of um Suki and uh Sokka, Hakoda.
Well, the only bender was Zuko, right? Yeah. I mean, that's an interesting thought.
Well, and Chit saying, if we are including him.
Right. Yeah, no, yeah, as soon as Zula showed up, I'm like, oh boy, here we go again.
But I love that everyone's ready. Like when Suki's like, I've been waiting for this rematch, and Suko's like, yeah, me too. Take her down.
After she gets done scaling a building and taking the warden hostage, she still has the strength to say, okay, I'm ready to do this.
Okay, but that line when Suki like gets the warden, she's like, sorry, warden, you're my prisoner now. And then all the guys show up out of breath, they're panting. Suki hasn't broken a sweat, and Nakota's like, that's some girl. Saka's like, tell me about it. Oh man.
Oh, so good. Can we talk about uh Aang's workout regimen?
Yeah, hot squats. Hot squats. At the time of Badger Frog creaks.
I didn't read the subtitles. I thought he I read hop squats. Because the subtitle said hop squats, so you literally read hop squat. Wow. And so I see, I should see Aang just squatting one hop squat, two hot squat. I'm like, I'm like, no, you're supposed to be hopping, dude.
Aang, you're not doing it right. You're not doing it right.
So uh uh The Boiling Rock is the first episode in the entire series where the only only one element is bent, and that's fire. So there's never been an episode where only one element appears.
Wow. Hmm.
Hmm. So Well, of course, in the Boiling Rock. Yeah, I know. I was expecting a little a little bit of water betting. Can you imagine how effective Katara would have been in that in that scenario, though? Use it like bending boiling water. You guys want to get out? Watch this. Yeah. That's probably why she didn't know.
They're like, oh, that'd be too easy. She's gotta sit this one out. She could have gotten back at Aang for burning her. Oh my god.
Wow. Well, there you go.
Everyone gets matching Zuko scars on their face. Like that's like they become like the Zuko Scar Tribe.
Maybe she does it with like a K. She looks like they didn't mark Remember Me.
But then she heals it, and then she does it again, then she heals it. Can you imagine how messed up that would be? Okay. Oh man. Okay, more, more little nuts and bolts. Uh I love, again, like I've like I've said, I love the writing in these episodes. There's so many great lines. Especially like they just kind of coming down at the end, like the guy who gets hit and he's like, That hurt my feelings.
Uh Hey Riot, uh Azula saying, Because I'm a people person. All these lines are so good. And then it I think it kind of like ends with May. Like she gets so many great lines, like the Jerky Dump Me line, and then when she's like having words with Azula, and she gets that great line about how Azula miscalculated and quote, I love Zuko more than I fear you.
Which I think is a really powerful thing for Azula to hear because I think Azula rules out of fear where other people believe that love is a more powerful emotion. And Azula exists in this world where fear and intimidation is what you're going to use to get what you want versus kindness and love and peace.
Yeah. That was definitely a really strong ending, and it's nice to see those girls stand their ground with Azula for the first time.
Azula, if you'd picked up on what she was doing, was getting ready to bend lightning. She was going to kill May. Just so we're aware. Yep.
Was gonna kill May.
Would you think about it, Troy?
No, man. Surprised. Would you have missed Emo May? What?
Would you have missed Emo May?
Maybe.
Oh my gosh.
Maybe. Oh, poor May. And then Ty comes out of nowhere. I'm like, well, that answers my question. If Azula survives the series, she will she will be an old lady with no friends. Well.
There goes You are gonna be an old lady with no friends and lots of cats. That's right. Cats and blue fire.
Do you have any other friends besides those two?
Well, we all know Azula has a very difficult time making friends.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
So we saw that in the beach. Oh yeah.
More great lines. Uh when the warden's like, oh, put them in a cooler. And the guard's like, well, they they are in a cooler, sir. When shit sang, and they're like, in literally in the cooler, in the water. So funny.
Do you think they would have made it had Homeboy not ripped off part of it and been like, oh, I'm gonna make it go faster?
Yeah. I can't believe how nervous that was making me. Like, I wanted them to get caught. It was so weird. You nervous to for them to get caught. Because they were in that cooler, but the thing wasn't moving. From what I saw, that clue was literally just going around in circles around the prison. I was like, oh god, they're gonna just fry to death.
Everyone's like sweaty and hot, and they're like, oh, this sucks.
I'm like, I don't know about you, but I've spent about 15 minutes in a sauna. That they probably they might have been in that thing for a good hour. I'm like, no, they need to get out of that thing.
You're gonna get hurt. You're gonna have heat stroke. Yeah. We did the finished sauna when we were in Budapest. Katie. No, that was for your birthday.
It was your 29th birthday.
31st.
My 31st birthday.
Oh, right. Alright. Yeah, so the finished sauna, like we were in that, and it was the dry heat. It was so hot. And you didn't do this, but then I jumped into the cool bath. Oh.
unknown Yeah.
And that was miserable. Oh, that was so cold. There's a photographic evidence. If you look on that calendar, you can see me emerging from the cool finished tub in nothing but a pair of trunks. So cold. So so cold.
Isn't that an interesting term? Trunks.
Yeah, kind of like because I think that the trunks they get their name from the Dragon Ball Z character trunks, and people are like, oh, we'll just call these trunks.
Let's move on. Is there it?
That's baloney. Speaking of weird clothing. Yeah, Troy's wearing a bra right now, so. And a wife beater.
Which is a weird thing.
I'm like, why would you call it the wife beater? Or thongs. Right.
But I think wife beater is worse. Wife beater's way worse.
Can't call it a tank top, can you? You should.
Yeah, like a white tank top.
Yeah, I'm wearing a white tank top. No, I'm wearing a my wife beater.
Do people still say that to you?
I don't know the last person who's worn one. Is it you?
Are you wearing one?
No. I'm wearing nothing underneath this shirt. No beaten here.
Yeah, we can see. Can you?
So for our listeners, Jordan's actually not wearing a shirt. It's true.
I usually do these topless with my pierced nipples. And talk about a weird word. Pierced nipples.
Blue blast off power.
Wow, this is really devolving. Oh yeah. Okay, so another great line, speaking of piercings, when the pirate comes out and Zuko's like, hey, is that your dad?
It was like, my dad doesn't have a nose ring.
It's like so offended. And then when Sokka goes in to like be with Okoda and like kind of hatch a plan, it's the worst laugh Sokka does in the entire series. The worst, the single worst when they actually they make their joke.
Like we didn't just hear it.
I know. And then he just kept it. Kept going. Yeah. It's like, why? Shut it down.
unknown Yeah, we don't need to give it.
It's literally Okay, and Jordan did that like two or three more times. This was like Troy and I are trying to focus on the episode.
It's the worst thing Sokka's ever done in the series. Wait, did you laugh like that? That in high school. No, and if I did, I would have far fewer friends.
Would have been still would have been more friends than me.
Well, isn't that weird that I mean that's like a weird thing to say, that your laugh would deter people, that you would have less friends.
Okay, if could you imagine hang out with someone, like you make a joke and they go, I had a friend's mom.
Yeah, they can't help it.
I had a friend's mom. I wasn't friends with the friend's mom, but I was friends with the friend. Got it? Okay. So every play we would have at the high school, she's probably listening now. My friend, he would do something. He wouldn't even do something that was funny, and then you would know where friend's mom was sitting in the audience because you would hear her because she went to every single time, every single uh performance, and she would go like a dolphin.
She also told me when I got my first facial hair, I sprung out a single black hair from my chin, and she told me to not shave it, not do anything to leave it. She crazy.
And she laughed at you because you had a black head? No, a black hair. A hair. We went from laughs to talk about your black hair.
Was your other episode or was your other episode was your other thing of advice to pluck it?
No, I probably should have shaved like the my one sprout of hair. Who wants one big black hair sprout sticking out of their head face?
I wish we could have seen it. I don't know. That's tough. I mean, are we talking it was like two inches long?
What is two inches long? I have no visual for things that got two inches long. Let's move on. My dad doesn't have a nose ring.
I knew I knew somebody from high school. We'll not mention any name, but they had a laugh that was so inward, you almost had to like look at them like, what are you doing?
No, it was like a but I'm talking about like you can't it's not fair to judge people based on these laughs like that.
When I was in my preteens, all my laughs, I looked like I was having a seizure.
No, it's a silent laugh.
If I had a silent laugh, I just would just start shaking.
What really?
Yeah. That's adorable. Do it for me. We literally Yeah, look, look, we're doing it right now.
We're gonna all silent laugh. Ready? Okay, go.
And then my cousin Patrick would be like, dude, it looks like you're having a seizure. Look at you right now. Just you just laugh at anything.
What the hey, Pat? Okay.
So, not speaking of laughs, how does nobody recognize Zuko?
unknown What?
No, but even when he's a prisoner.
Yeah, I agree.
Again, I don't know why the the citizens of the Fire Nation aren't able to identify on sites the members of the royal family.
Okay, well that just goes to show that people just don't They're dumb. I mean, if we were here, if we went outside and asked a bunch of people, not everyone would know who Prince William was?
Well that Well, we did have this moment of someone like someone was watching the presidential debate with us and they went, Oh, that's Joe Biden? And I was like, dude, he was vice president for eight years!
Right. Like she didn't know who she didn't know. Oh. So that's what I'm saying. Like, people like just choose to be like, I don't know. I don't care.
I could identify Al Gore on site.
Moving on.
Speaking of vice president.
Fun fact about not recognizing famous people. Uh Charlie Chaplin went to a look-alite contest and got third place.
Oh, Troy did sign laughing.
Why did your eyes roll back?
That's why I used to laugh. He passed out. Troy died for two seconds.
You didn't do an eye roll.
I did too. I was like, uh just couldn't even control it. Okay, the Charlie Chaplin getting third in a look-alite contest. That was kind of like in the Serpent's Pass episode where the gals like, oh, not a very impressive costume about Aang. Okay. Okay, episode ends. They steal like a Zeppelin.
Wait, wait, but May and Ty Lee like go to jail.
Yeah, what do you think is gonna happen to Mae and Ty Lee, Troy?
Are they going to the freezer?
They're gonna.
Oh, they're gonna get another cooler going. And the war's gonna be like, we need a new cooling system. But the warden's her uncle.
The monkey's his uncle?
Wow. No, man. Well, the warden, he's like tied up in the thing.
Well, he's gonna get out. He's not gonna stay there forever. Do we Okay, so what did you think about the warden's ideology about he'd rather die than see a prisoner escape?
Yeah, just kind of shows you how much of an idiot he is because he has the royal princess and her friend on the gondola and he says, Cut the rope. Fully knowing they're on the gondola. I mean, does he know? Does he? I don't know. There's a commotion on the roof. The prison guards could clearly see the royal princess up there, and they still are like, Okay, let's cut the rope.
It's like That's true.
Critical thinking.
There was none. Not with the prisoners. Prison guards.
Not with the warden. Did you agree with the warden's plan to go down with the ship?
Yeah, I think that he would keep that reputation and die knowing that he did everything to prevent that, because had he survived, you have to deal with the higher-ups and or the fire lord, and that's probably worse than death.
Okay, let's walk let's walk through a little bit. Let's say the warden, the the line gets successfully cut. May can't figure out how to get out of the her locker room with her guard friend. So, what happens is the line gets cut, everyone goes into the boiling lake, presumably gets boiled alive like lobsters.
You take out simultaneously the prince of the Fire Nation and the Princess of the Fire Nation, leaving no heirs to the throne at all. Ozai would have no more children. I don't know if he's still fertile. And then Iroh, having lost his son, I mean, he just takes it.
Give it back to the people.
Yeah, democracy.
There we go.
It's a wild idea to think, like, what like the worst case scenario of that happening would have fundamentally destroyed the Fire Nation as we know it.
Well, good. Yeah. It's too bad they didn't cut the line. Abdicate that throne.
Yeah, it is too bad. We could have solved a lot of problems.
That could have been the series finale.
Wow. Credits roll. Aang's still doing hot squats, unaware that everyone's dead. And then they would never have known. They would never have known that Sokka and Zuko and Suki and Okota and Chitsang and the Warden and Ty Lee and Azula all met a watery grave. What a wild series finale that would have been.
And May would have survived. Mei would have survived. She would have been the one to tell the tale. Her uncle would have been gone. She would have been the perfect person to tell the tale. So this crazy thing happened. Okay. Other things to note, Zuka was using moves from the dancing dragon to both attack and defend in this episode.
Especially in uh part two. He was using those moves.
In a different way, he was finally on Azula's level of intensity, but just in a different way.
Yeah, I mean, Zuka was definitely he wasn't as you know, he wasn't doing like an onslaught.
He was just Sokka doing with the sword, like running at Azula and cut her with the sword.
He was gonna give her a haircut.
I mean, he was just like kind of showing it off and then going back, retreat. Look at my sword!
I do think there's a fundamental issue with like swords in animated series like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There's only so much you can do if you're fighting other living creatures with a sword. Like, you don't want to have Leonardo like run in and like chop the shredder in half. You know, it's kind of kind of dark.
Oh yeah.
And so yeah, in this in this series, like you get Sokka having a sword, but I mean, really, if you think about it, he's not gonna be able to be super effective with it. I mean, it's mostly just a tool. Like, he's not gonna cut Azula's.
On a kid's show, no. He's in the he's in the wrong show for pulling out that story.
Sokka, you're in the wrong series.
They brought a sword to a firefight.
Get on the a an HBO show, Sokka. Damn. Do all sorts of things with that. Okay. So we get the end, they steal a Zeppelin somehow. Sokka, with you know, because he knows war balloons and knows everything. He's able to commandeer a war balloon and steer it back to the Western Air Temple. And then they land and he's like, and we got the best meat of all.
The meat of friendship and fatherhood. That was a weird line. No comment. I loved that line. So weird.
Yeah, that's what I thought. I was like, oh, Jordan's gotta love that.
It is the meat of friendship and fatherhood.
But then, Chitseng, what does he say? It's like, oh hey, everybody, I'm new or something.
That's almost as good as Zuko showing up out of nowhere and saying, hey, Zuko here. Hello, Zuko here. Oh man. Which out of the entire series. That place is starting to become a meeting ground for all the characters. That's nice. For friendship. And fatherhood.
Where do we go from here, Troy?
We have like Where do we go from here?
We got like a group we're building a group. We're building like amassing an army again. Kind of a weird army.
Yeah, what's up? What's the future?
What is the future? Let's go. This is We got a few episodes left until Aang stops doing his hop squats. We have exactly six episodes left in the series. Dang. And uh we're uh we're gonna go the rest of the series without somebody getting killed. You predict no one will die. I predict no one will die.
Okay. Do you think okay?
Wow.
Cool.
Okay. Okay.
Got some insider trading going, huh? Katie, did anything in these two episodes surprise you?
I think it just it was good to see the girl power in these episodes. And yeah, like I said, it was good to see Suki show up, be a bad B and uh make us all proud. And yeah, it was the same with Mei and Tylee. I also enjoyed it was a strong finish, and I yeah, was happy to see them stand up for themselves.
I mean, and like, yeah, Zuko aside and all that, I just I felt like it was more about having self-respect for themselves. So that was good. That was good.
Yeah, what surprised me the most is as soon as they unmasked Zuko as a prison guard and made him a prisoner inside of Fire Nation prison, even though he's a traitor. What shocked me is the fact that he did not have more influence, good or bad, over the fellow Fire Nation prisoners.
Well, again, I don't think anyone knew he was the Fire Prince, and he wasn't gonna play that card because I think the warden was right. If they found out like the Fire Lord's son was amongst them, you know, he better watch out and not drop the soap.
But would they? Like, if they found out that he was a traitor, they probably I'm like, if I was a prisoner, I'd be like, why did you portray your dad? Like, that's weird. What's going on, dude?
That's true. That could have been like a good part of the like therapy session. Therapy session. Wow.
I did it!
I did it! I'm the winner! Alright. Yep, yep.
Okay, so we have six episodes left. The next episode is the Southern Raiders, and then the next episode after that is the one exactly before the four-part finale, and it is called the Ember Island Players. Yeah. Signing off. Signing off. I'm also signing off. I'm gonna get into my war balloon.
I'm staying here.
Okay. Enjoy your meat of friendship and fatherhood. Meat. Uh do you want to sing a song about meat? Meat, meat, meat, meat, meat, meat, meat. It's friendship, friendship, friendship. You can eat it raw sometimes.
You can eat it cooked most times. But wait, what meat can you eat raw? You can eat some really good quality fish and some really good quality beef. Salmon? Salmon. I mean, you're just like a bag.
But don't they put raw salmon on sushi? Well, sushi. Sashimi is just the fish, and then the sushi is when you got like the sushi rice.
Hold on, sidebar real quick. So Jordan went down this rabbit hole of reading all about people drinking bear's milk.
Grizzly bear milk specifically.
And how during hibernation they'd go in and remove the milk with like a vial. Anyway, blah blah blah. And then it said, Happy April Fools. Yep, yep.
Yep, yep. Yep, yep, I'm an idiot.
What's the name of our podcast, Troy?
Yep, yep. Avatar Podcast. Yep, yep, yep, yep podcast. Yep, yep. Yipcast.
Yipcast.com.
Yipcast.org. We're gonna.
