From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Hello and welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. My name is Father John Rotello. The televising of this mass is made possible by the contribution from an anonymous donor from Vancouver, British Columbia. This Mass is offered in Thanksgiving for blessings received and for peace in the world.
Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this Mass to the faithful across Canada, the United States, and around the world. And we begin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the community of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And with your Spirit.
Lord have mercifully. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Let us pray. Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion, they may receive the greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Amen. A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Brothers and sisters, you were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath like everyone else.
But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness towards us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God. This is not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. The word of the Lord.
Worship the Lord with gladness, come into his presence with singing. The Lord made us, we belong to him. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us and we are his. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. The Lord made us, we belong to Him. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name. The Lord made us, we belong to Himeluya, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Aleluya, Hallelujah. Blessed are the poor in spirit, the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Everything from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, Lord.
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me. But Jesus said to him, Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you? And Jesus said to the crowd, Take care. Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for one's life does not consist in abundance of possessions.
Then Jesus told him a parable. The land of a rich man produced abundantly, and he thought to himself, What should I do? For I have no place to store my crops. Then he said, I will do this. I will put down my barns and build larger larger ones, and there I will store all of my grain and my goods, and I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years.
Relax, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, You fool, this very night your life is being demanded of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be. So it is with those who store up treasure for themselves, but are not rich toward God. The Gospel of the Lord. Today's Gospel, we reflect on these riches and and on all this wonderful stuff, material things that we have on earth.
So I ask you, maybe you can stop and think if uh you know of someone in the family, maybe in your own family that you've heard of or are involved in some kind of dispute of money over an inheritance. Uh sometimes not a good thing. You see, inheritance disputes are rarely easy to resolve, especially when the relatives or close friends of the deceased are benefactors.
I personally have witnessed a number of situations when they could not agree on who should get what and who should get the most or who should get the less, and so on. It's sad, but true, as I'm sure many of you have faced. So, why did Jesus refuse to settle an inheritance dispute between two brothers?
You see, Jesus saw that at the heart of the issue was not justice or fairness, but rather grief, greed, and possessiveness. It's important, you see, to separate the love of possessions to the love of neighbor or respect of the neighbor. Let's recall the Ten Commandments that are summarized in two categories.
First, do not worship false idols and do not covet what belongs to another. It's impossible side, or rather, it's the opposite side of the two great commandments, love God and love neighbor. Jesus warns that the man who wanted half of his brother's inheritance to be aware of all the envy, of all the terrible thing of the desire, wanting more and more.
To covet is to wish to get wrongly what another possesses or to begrudge what God has given to another. Jesus restates that commandment, do not covet, but also states that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of his or her material possessions.
unknown St.
Augustine commented on this passage as he stated, greed wants to divide, just as love desires to gather. Greed desires, love gathers. So what's the significance of guard against all greed? Instead, he states, it's full of self-love and love of others. And Augustine concludes, Master, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.
Or rather, he might say, Master, tell my brother that he may have my inheritance. It's okay, let it go. What great example can attain the best peace? Just let it go. It doesn't last forever. See, Jesus emphasizes his point with the parable about the foolish man who as he who what we read in St. Luke's Gospel, chapter 12.
So why does Jesus call this uh wealth, uh the landowner full of wealth, foolish or a fool? Jesus does not fault the rich man for industriousness and skill in acquiring wealth, but rather his egoism and selfishness when he says, It's mine, all mine, and no one else's. My greed, it's all mine. This parable is similar to the parable of the rich man who refused to give any help to the beggar Lazarus.
You've heard of that before. Remember that? The rich fool had lost the capacity to that he was concerned, and his only interests were in himself, not about anybody else. His death was the final loss of his soul. What is Jesus' lesson in using this material possessions? Well, it is in giving that we receive.
Those who are rich towards God receive abundant rewards, maybe not in this world, but definitely in the next. Not only in this life, but in eternity as well. So to conclude, what we are asking for in this world is our daily bread. At every Mass, my dear friends in Christ, we pray this beautiful prayer that Jesus gave us.
Remember the phrase? Give us this day our daily bread. Here's a short story that I came across and I'd love to share it with you because it just makes so much sense. There was a certain Asian legend that tells of a king and his son. The king bestowed upon the prince a royal endowment that would enable him to live a worthy fashion in a worthy fashion for all twelve months of the year.
So the kind king decided that rather than give all of these things away all at the same time, that he would distribute them on a daily lot on daily allotments. In this way, the king was able to see his son every day of the year, and vice versa. Every day the son would come for his daily nourishment and they would see each other.
What a nice way to put it. This legend then is somewhat analogous to our relationship with God. Our daily bread. In the Lord's Prayer, the second part. Our daily bread. Not for yesterday, not for tomorrow, but today our daily bread. It depends upon the prayer that we offer each day. Our daily bread. The fact that we ask for today's bread needs to imply that we will have another encounter with God the Father, our daily bread at the altar.
This is the way that the Father encourages us to be steadfast in saying the prayer that Jesus gave us. The Lord has taught us to ask for bread. This is for everything we need to live as children of God. See, we need faith, we need hope, we need love, we need joy, we need faith for the body and food for the soul every single day.
A little bit of the time for that specific day. All we need to do in the everyday life is having these virtues of God given to us for a daily basis. A heart big enough to understand other people and to be of service to them as well. In short, bread is a symbol of all the many gifts that come to us from God.
In the first place, we ask for whatever we need in a material sense. And in turn, we share with those in need and see it just multiply. As we see in the Eucharist, always enough for everyone. The table of abundance, enough for today. What happens tomorrow? Only God will do. And finally, I'm just with a personal story that I would like to conclude with.
Some years ago, I uh knew a lady uh who was a religious, and she left the religious order for various reasons. And after that, she got a very, very good job, did very well financially. And then something happened that she pretty well lost everything she had. She needed help, and I, thanks sweet to God, I was in a position to help her with a place to live and be for some food and so on.
And uh she went from a lot to basically nothing to live on. Before she died, she said to me, You know, I'm so grateful for you and for people like you. I'm also so grateful to die with nothing. I don't have anybody to be arguing about my estate, about my possession, because I have nothing to give but just to leave love behind to say, I've had, I've I've lost, now I have God's love, and thanks to you that I can go in peace.
She lost everything material, she gained everything spiritual. And still to this day I think of her. What a wonderful end she had in this world. May she rest in peace because she died in total tranquility, nothing but God's love enough for everything she needed today and tomorrow. That's all we need as well.
And so let me close with this prayer. Lord Jesus, free my heart from all possessiveness and from coveting what belongs to another. May I desire you alone as the one true treasure worth possessing above all else. Help me to make good use of material blessings that you give me, that I may use them generously for your glory and for the good of others.
Amen. And the prayer intention for this month of the rosary, for those of you in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
And let us gather during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding it in the source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
And to the Mother of Jesus who also provides everything we need. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. For if you have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God. Through the mystery of this water and wine, maybe come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for if you receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.
Blessed be God forever.
Lord, wash away my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. Lord, accept the sacrifice of your hands for the praise and glory of his name. For our good and good of all of His words, accept, O Lord, the sacred offerings which at your bidding we dedicate to your name, and in order that through these gifts we may become worthy of your life, grant us unfailing obedience to your commands through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always in every word to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty to know God. For just as through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it in you.
And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all to redeem praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too exalt you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Make over therefore these gifts, we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the do fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it.
For this is my body, which will be given up for you. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
Give us Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the choss of salvation, giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. How we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your church breath throughout the world, and bring you to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our Bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Joseph, our spouse, of the blessed apostles, and all the saints who please you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and we praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.
unknown Amen.
At the Savior's command, and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, you pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all the stress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church. And grace, you are peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And in yours. Can you stop for a moment and maybe think of someone that I was saying in the homily that you sort of at odds went with?
This is a time to give him to the Lord and grant peace to everyone that has involved in somehow in your life. The peace of Christ be with you always. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ, our Mass has been celebrated.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this Mass.
We have a research.
