From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with your spirit. Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from two donors.
The first is Grace Robinson from St. Joseph's Parish, Fergus, Ontario, in memory of Robert Mario Londoni on the fifth anniversary of his passing, for the deceased members of the Robinson and Londoni families, and in Thanksgiving for the Daily TV Mass. The second is an anonymous donor from Loreto, Ontario, for the spiritual, mental, and physical health of family members and relatives.
Also, special prayers for a son for a successful surgery and healing. Our thanks go to the donors for the gift of this Mass. Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Marguerite Duville, the foundress of the Grey Nuns. She was born in 1701, and she's the first Canadian-born saint in Canada. She died in 1771.
Marguerite came from a poor family, but thanks to relatives, she received a good education at the hands of the Ursuline sisters. At the age of 20, she got married to Francois Deauville, which proved to be a disaster. He was selfish, arrogant, indifferent, and involved in illegal liquor distilleries. He left her at the age of 30 when he died with two children and a great deal of debt.
But this did not daunt Marguerite. She pulled her socks up together, she settled her children and joined three women to form what was called Les Says, les Sours Grise, which is a common term for drunkards in Quebec, and she took this as an honor working with the poor and setting up the health system in Quebec.
We thank God for this great saint. And as we begin this Eucharist, we ask Saint Marguerite to intercede before the throne of God. You were sent to heal the contrite. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. You came to call sinners Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us.
Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Let us pray. God of mercy and compassion, who led Saint Marguer to embrace the way of the cross and to devote her ardent love to assist the needy of her day. Make us bold like her, so that we may imitate your compassion and have strength to persevere until the day you call us to share the joy of your saints through Christ our Lord.
Amen. A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. In Christ we have obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set up our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory.
In Christ also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. This is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people to the praise of his glory. The word of the Lord.
Make melody to him with a harm of taste. Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his all.
When the crowd had gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not be made known. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the house tops.
I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will warn you home to fear. Fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies, yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.
But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid, you are of more value than many sparrows. The Gospel of the Lord. Paul had spent two years in Ephesus, he had made many friends. There were many Gentiles who believed in Jesus Christ because of Paul. He had set up administrators in the church in Ephesus.
And then he continued on his missionary journey. Then he was returning from Athens and he decided, I cannot go to Ephesus and say thank you because they have got so many friends, and I want to be back in Jerusalem in time of Pentecost. Four years later, in the year 62, Arno Domini, Paul is in Rome under house arrest, and he writes this letter to the Ephesians.
Now many people say that this was not written by Paul but by a disciple of Paul. You see, when you and I write letters, and it is an official letter, we sign yours sincerely. If we know the person just gradually, many people write to me because of the TV mass. I have never met them and I probably will never meet them, but I write yours affectionately.
But if I've known them really very well, I'll end with hugs and kisses. Now, Paul's letter to the Ephesians is more of the yours sincerely and yours affectionately type, not hugs and kisses, and yet he was there for so many years. Paul tells the people, and he uses the Exodus experience. Canadian sister of Zion, Maurina Fritz, is a hundred years old.
She's done two great things this year. She became a hundred, and she wrote her final book, hopefully, I am Thou, Jesus of Nazareth. But my favorite book of hers is the Exodus Experience, where she explains how the Israelites became a chosen people of God, an insignificant group of people, and the Lord chooses him, chooses these people as his own.
Paul in the letter to the Ephesians will use that Exodus experience. He says, remember, God has made a covenant with you. God has chosen you as a special people. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart. And if that is the case, then you should behave with dignity.
And he uses the same phrase to the people in Ephesus. He says, You have been inscribed in Jesus Christ. You have been inscribed because of his life, his death, his resurrection, and because you have decided to pick up the cross daily and follow him, you are now sealed with the Holy Spirit. The people in the Exodus experience were sealed with the love of God because God had given and made a covenant with them.
Here they are sealed with the Holy Spirit because they have been inscribed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And the early church began to use the seal of the Holy Spirit in its sacrament, the sacrament of baptism. After an adult or a child is baptized, there are three rituals. They're given a light so that they can walk, move from darkness, and walk as children of the light.
They're given a new garment. They're no longer the garment and slaves to sin, but they have got the new life in Jesus Christ. And they are told to hold this blanket or this garment of innocence, this new life, so that it may remain unstained when they are called to heaven. And finally, they are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
You and I have been sealed with that same spirit. And because we have been sealed with that spirit, we belong to Christ. When we come to our gospel today, we have enough material for three different reflections. And I thought I'd choose the one that consoles me most. Are not five sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them is lost. The late sister of St. Joseph, Joan Marie Smith, tells us the story of Ethel Waters. I doubt whether you and I have ever heard of her name. And yet she came from a family where, as was very often the case, she was abandoned by her parents and was brought up by her grandmother.
And there were three, four different turning points in her life. At the age of nine, at the age of 11, at the age of 13, and at the age of 17. At the age of nine, her grandmother decided to enroll her in a Catholic school in Philadelphia. And she was so immersed and was so excited about this that at the age of 11, she decided, I'm going to dedicate my life totally to Jesus Christ, Ethel Walter.
At the 11, at the age of 11, but she was determined and she never turned back on that. At the age of 13, she became a chambermaid in a hotel just to make ends meet. And then on a whim, she joined a Halloween song contest at the age of 17. And her voice was so beautiful and wonderful, she won hands down far ahead of everybody.
And from then on, it was just fame and fortune. You and I might not have heard of Ethel Waters, but you and I have heard the song Dinah or Stormy Weathers. We even sing it today. Well, there were two things that were no turning back for the case of Ethel Waters. One was that she would never sing or act in any movie that did not have family relations.
And she became so famous in a time when the Africans were asked to go through a back door into a hotel, no matter how famous they were. Louis Armstrong, Joe Lewis, even when they were honored, they had to enter through a back door. Not a little Ethel Waters. When she was in a movie, her name got first billing.
When she died in 1977, the stone on her grave said, I sing because I am happy because I sing. I sing because I'm free. His eye is on the sparrow. I know he watches me. She knew that she was just an insignificant sparrow, but the Lord watches her, and the Lord watches you and me. And so we have to sing because we are happy.
We sing because we are free, because the Lord watches me. God bless you all. Let us pray together. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention book, we pray to the Lord.
unknown Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather together in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the sponsors of this Mass, Grace Robinson from Fergus, Ontario, and the anonymous donor from Loreto, Ontario, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For Pope Leo's intention for the month of October, for collaboration between different religious traditions, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We make all these prayers through Christ our Lord.
unknown Amen.
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Through the mystery of this wine. And water, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this wine we offer you. Fruit of the wine and work of human hands, it will become for us, our spiritual drink.
Blessed be God forever.
Lord God, be pleased to accept these gifts that we offer to you with humble and contrite hearts.
unknown Thank you.
Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this house sacrifice be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. Accept the offerings of your church, O Lord, on this memorial of Saint Marguerite Deville, and from it grant us the wisdom and strength for the work of serving our neighbors in unity and joy. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen. The Lord be with you and in your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for in the saints who consecrated themselves to Christ for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, it is right to celebrate the wonders of your providence by which you call human nature back to its original holiness and bring it to experience on earth the gifts you promise in the new world to come.
And so with the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim.
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of host heaven and earth our father of your glory, whispered in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, who is our highest.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Holy Spirit upon them, so that they may become for us the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
Your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy, and those who yearn for the Lord. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph's spouse, with the blessed apostles, and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-airs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope, the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.
You take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace.
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, My soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us and all our dear ones unto life everlasting.
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
The valiant woman who can find, she opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. Let us pray. Grant, O Lord, that the sacrament of which we have partaken may lead us to show your kindness and your compassion to all and prepare for the joys of the eternal banquet. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
The Lord be with you and with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ to love and serve the Lord and one another.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
