From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Peter J. Troy. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Barbara Francis and family from Brampton, Ontario, in memory of Anthony Francis, and for all her deceased family members, relatives, and friends, in thanksgiving for blessings and graces received and for the return of her family to their faith.
The second is an anonymous couple from Grand Bay, Westfield, New Brunswick, for living and deceased family members and friends, and for those who have no one to pray for them. The third is Obed Deliosa from Bacon, Sorsagon City in the Philippines. In memory of his deceased parents, brothers, and sisters, especially Nora Deliosa, Laguna, and Lorna, and for world peace.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And with your Spirit.
Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have gravely sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Let us pray. Almighty ever living God, who adorn the sacred body of your church with the confessions of holy martyrs, grant we pray that just as the glorious passion of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, which we celebrate today, brought him eternal splendor, so it may be for us unending protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
Amen. A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you, as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him.
So that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places for above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come.
And God has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all the word of the Lord.
You have set your glory above the heavens out of the mouths of babes and infants. You have found it above work. You gave your son authority over all your creations. When I look at your habits, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established, what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them.
You give your son authority over all your creation. Yet you have made them a little lover than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands. You have put all things under their feet. You gave your Son authority over all your creation The Spirit of Truth will bear witness to me, says the Lord, and you also will be my witnesses.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Jesus said to his disciples, I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.
But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When they bring you before the synagogues, before the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.
The Gospel of the Lord. After enduring intense and constant high temperatures of about 1,000 to 1200 degrees Celsius for over a billion years, it patiently waits for its turn to be brought up to the surface through a volcanic eruption. The diamond only becomes beautiful, sparkling, the hardest known material on the planet, and very expensive, after a very long period of transformation.
Diamond rings have become not only an important part of marriage proposals, but also a kind of symbol for marriage. A diamond is formed under extreme pressure and heat and only becomes a durable and strong material because of what it endures. A marriage, in the same way, matures and strengthens over time by withstanding life's pressures and challenges.
Marriage becomes a durable and unbreakable bond through a total and enduring commitment that is exercised over and over again. But what is true of marriage is true of any relationship, even our faith. What makes any relationship durable and lasting is love and commitment. Back in 2018, there was a romantic comedy movie called Crazy Crazy Rich Agents.
It was a fictional story about a billionaire Nick Young's family. His family wealth unfortunately had drawn lots of attention from many disingenuous women who were chasing after him for his family's fortune. So Nick left his home country of Singapore in search of true love. Nick fell in love with Rachel, who was a university professor in the U.S.
Rachel grew up very poor and was raised by a single mother. She had no clue that her boyfriend was the only child of a billionaire family. When Nick's mother disapproved of Rachel, Nick was about to walk away from his family fortune to be with his true love. Spoiler alert, Nick's mother eventually accepts Rachel.
The truth is when you are successful and money is flowing, you'll be surrounded by people who want to have a good time with you. But they aren't your best friends. So how do you know who truly loves you? It's when you have little to nothing to offer, when you lost everything and hit rock bottom. In those moments, it's those who are willing to go the distance and suffer with you, make sacrifices to be by your side.
They are your true friends who truly love you. Love is not proven on your best days, but on your worst days. Today we are celebrating the feast day of St. Ignatius of Antioch. He lived through a very turbulent and dangerous time to be a Christian. He died a martyr, and thousands of Christians also died for their faith.
But persecution did not destroy the Christian faith. It made the Christian faith grow stronger. Even though it's not like that for us today, there are many Christian brothers and sisters who face religious persecutions and discrimination every day. From my experience, those with strong faith actually come from places where they suffer religious persecutions.
I've met people who came from Pakistan, Africa, in the Middle East. Not only do they know the faith by being able to intelligently explain our faith, but they also are committed to their faith by going to church every Sunday, even though going to church can be very dangerous. I think it's correct to say that strong faith makes people capable of enduring discrimination and withstand religious persecutions.
The more accurate way it would be to say that those difficult circumstances actually made their faith stronger. Back in 2015, the terrorist group ISIS captured 21 migrant workers in Libya. 20 of them were Egyptian Coptic Christians, and one man from Ghana was not Christian. The terrorists threatened to kill all the 20 Coptic Christians if they did not abandon their faith in Christ.
None of them abandoned their faith. They chose martyrdom instead. They were praying and praising God until they were met with death. The man who was from Ghana, who wasn't even Christian, didn't have to die. The only reason he chose to die alongside the Coptic Christians was that when he saw the Coptic Christians' unwavering faith and their willingness to die for it, he chose to become a Christian at that moment and face martyrdom with them.
The last thing that he said before he died was, their God is my God. Today, all 21 of them are recognized as saints and martyrs, both by the Coptic Church and Roman Catholic Church. Compared to some of our Christian sisters and brothers who are faced with immense challenges for being a Christian, it does not require much sacrifice on our part to practice our faith here in North America.
It's been said that New Zealand has the most non-flying birds in the world simply because food was abundant and there was no natural predators. So, not having a need to fly, they lost their ability to fly. In the same way, if we don't practice our faith and keep prioritizing everything else before God, putting our family, friends, sports, and convenience first, we may not only risk losing our faith, but also the kingdom of God that was promised to us.
Every now and then I run into people who gave up on their faith because they're disappointed in God. They felt that their struggles in life were proof that God didn't care. They're expecting their faith to remove all their struggles and challenges, turning their life into a smooth sail. I think it's important to make the distinction.
God does not intentionally put obstacles on our path just to make our life difficult. But God does allow them in our life because they serve a purpose. Cardinal Newman said, things grow by opposition. Without gravity, there would be no weightlifting. Without weightlifting, there could be no muscle building.
It is only through trials that we mature and grow stronger. Often experiencing life's challenges is not proof that God doesn't care, but proof that He is present in our lives, promoting growth in us. Just as pressure and fire transform carbon into diamond, so does God use trials to transform us and make us ready for his kingdom.
And remember, God doesn't have grandchildren. We cannot enter the kingdom of God by association or merits of our parents. Each of us needs to belong to Christ. It's a conscious decision we have to make because loving God requires a real commitment. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for those for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord. We ask our blessed Mother to intercede for us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
unknown Amen.
Heavenly Father, we have presented to you all our needs. We ask you to grant them through Christ our Lord. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, you'll become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, the fruit of the vine and work of human hands.
You'll become our spiritual drink. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. May this oblation, their homage be pleasing to you, O Lord. Just as you accept to Saint Ignatius, the wheat of Christ, made pure bread through his martyrdom and passion through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just. Our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for you're glorified when your saints are praised.
Their very sufferings are but wonders of your might. In your mercy you give ardour to their faith, to their endurance you grant firm resolve. And in their struggle the victory is yours through Christ our Lord. Therefore, all creatures of heaven and earth sing a new song in adoration, and we with all the hosts of angels cry out, and without end we acclaim.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he sent the blessing. He gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, His wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to His second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim, by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself.
Grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.
We bless Joseph her spouse, with the blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, with St. Ignatius Antioch, and with all the saints, on this constant intercession in your presence, we rely for your unfailing help. May this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world.
Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you.
In your compassionate and merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
Oh God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, forever and heaven.
At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit.
Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Love of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace.
Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
May the heavenly bread we have received, O Lord, on the feast day of Saint Ignatius renew us, we pray, and make us Christians in name and in deed through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
And with your Spirit.
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
