From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God our Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Good day, everyone, and welcome. My name is Monsignor Sam Bianco. I welcome you to the celebration of this TV, daily TV Mass.
The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from an anonymous donor from Calgary, Alberta. The Mass is offered for the repose of the soul of her husband, who passed away on October the 26th, 2008, for her living and deceased family and friends, for physical healing, improved health, and for the return of family members to the church and faith for world peace and in thanksgiving for the Daily TV Mass.
On behalf of all who are gathered here for this sacred celebration, we thank our donor for the gift of this Mass. As always, to celebrate this Mass in a proper manner, we seek the Lord's mercy and forgiveness for our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on all of us, forgive us our sins, and bring us all to everlasting life. Let us pray. O God, who teach us that you abide in hearts that are true and just grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling place pleasing to you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. My brothers and sisters, be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children, and live in love as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But fornication and impurity of any kind or greed must not be mentioned among you. As is proper among saints. Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk. But instead let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this that no fornicator or impure person or one who is greedy, that is, an idolator, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be associated with them. For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light. The word of the Lord.
But their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wave. In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so but a light chaff that the wind drives away.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, and the way of the wicked will perish By God as beahluya Alléluia Aleluya Aleluya Aleluya. Your word, oh Lord, is truth. Make us holy in the truth.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath, and just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for 18 years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, you are set free from your ailment.
When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be cured, and none on the Sabbath.
Well the Lord answered him and said, You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to give water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, who Satan has bound for 18 years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath day? When Jesus said this, all his opponents were put to shame, and the entire crowd was rejoicing at the wonderful things that he was doing.
The gospel of the Lord. Crippled her for eighteen years. My brothers and sisters in Christ, according to the scripture scholars and the doctors who read this text, this woman has a type of arthritis called encoluzing spondylitis. I trust I pronounced that properly. It's a type of arthritis that's genetically inherited in most instances, and it can do all sorts of things like cripple up your bones, it freezes your spine, and it bends you over.
You go through tremendous pain and distress and suffering. And so for 18 years, that was not uncommon for a person to suffer that, with not a lot of relief or ways of being relieved from her pain and distress. That type of arthritis is one of the six well-known types of arthritis there are in the world that many people suffer from.
And a personal note, I have one of those types of arthritis. I've had it since my early 20s. It's called psoriatic arthritis, and it can cause all kinds of skin lesions and pains. Even today, my one finger is still a little bent over. It doesn't work properly or function. There's a pain there. The good news, at least for the type of arthritis I have, is they've come to discoveries, and I'm greatly relieved, and a lot of it isn't cleared up, and one can only hope that that's the case for all the other types of arthritis arthritis that people suffer.
I I live in a senior citizen's home, and I see that, especially amongst so many older people who are needing walkers or ways of getting around and assistance and great patience because the arthritis caused them pains and it can have an effect on your emotions and sometimes lead to depression. And it changes a lot of your life attitudes and what you can and and cannot do.
As always uh when we do this, um we need to have great sympathy for whatever types of uh arthritis people have. But we have to keep in mind or bear in mind and keep central that whatever goes on in bodily sufferings not removed from the experience and the life of Jesus. If you think just for a few moments uh uh on the Via Dolorosa, the road that Jesus was on.
On that road, his body was beaten and scourged and knocked to the ground. He he he carried the burden only the cross but a weight that made him uh incapable of getting up. He needed help and assistance. And the wounds in his body uh were painful and deep, and you can imagine as he stretched out and pulled out on that cross, all those wounds are exaggerated, and then hanging there for three hours.
Yes, there are different kinds of suffering that people go through, but certainly in ever, whatever bodily suffering they go through need to know and people need to understand that the Lord Jesus is with them. The body, his body is precious to him, and our bodies are precious to him. And so bodily suffering is something that Jesus is very close to, that matters to him, that he goes through and that he cares about, and he wants people to know that they're not isolated and alone.
He suffered bodily, yes, but he suffered psychologically, as do all people who go through bodily uh suffering or bodily weakness or need help and care. Uh the important or most important reality of this story, of course, is to say that he performed a miracle there. He reached out and the woman was healed.
Um people reading and hearing that story said, Well, that's not possible. Miracles don't happen. Well, in the first instance, the people who stole the Tory to Luke, they recorded it. So there's testimony, if we one wishes to accept it, that people saw and heard what happened to that woman, and that was written and recorded.
And the second reality is, yes, there can be a good and wholesome debate about whether miracles are happening or not. Part of that debate rests on this premise. Is there something beyond the human experience of touching and seeing and feeling and hearing? In other words, is reality greater than what the human mind can touch or feel or sense?
And what is offered here is that the creation reality is greater than what human mind can perceive or know. And that indeed is what Jesus does when he heals people. He comes in and he breaks through that and brings the above nature the presence of God to people. And that happened then, and we think it happens today too, and it will happen at the end of the world, that it will be a resurrection.
The miracle is that there is creation. From nothing there was something. The second miracle is that Jesus rose from the dead and is present, and the third and most powerful miracle is that all creation will be raised up and lifted up to God. One can either believe it or not believe it. It's there, it's offered as an opportunity for those who wish to see that there is a God and his hands present in the world.
Now, the st the Pharisees are very skeptical today of what's going on, and they and they put Jesus down in a strange sort of way, uh, their ox or their donkey is their livelihood, and they seem to care more about the ox or the donkey than they do about this woman. And and they they use that rather than to the reality of the miracle.
And they're hypocritical because that, their ox or their donkey, or their own standing of how they're worshiping, is more important to them than what happens to the woman. And I think today we call that virtue signaling. That is to say, we may speak on behalf of a cause, we may say we're on this position, and we hold it because it's important and good, and everyone applauds us and acclaims us.
If in fact we only say and do nothing to help people, a virtuous signaler says, I'm gonna be on the side of the applause, but I actually don't put my money or my mouth or my actions to assisting people. And so that has implications for you and me today. The first thing is wherever we can, when we run into people who are suffering from arthritis, we have patience.
We need to have patience with ourselves. We need to continue to ask the scientists who have cleared up some parts of arthritis to continue to work. That's the helping them, assisting them, donating to that. And the second and deepest reality is whatever is your standard for action, if you are a believer, one believes and looks to Jesus and God who are above and beyond us and asks their help.
If you don't believe in God, but you believe in helping people and don't have a sense of God's presence, well then follow on your conscience. We Christians think the very best thing we can try to do is this to follow our conscience and help people, and to give praise and act God to be with us. That's the wondrous thing.
That's the wondrous miracle that God is performing here and now, and one day we'll do completely in his kingdom. Will you join with me, please, now, and we'll offer our prayers and petitions to the Lord. Let us pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Intentions book. We pray to the Lord.
unknown Lord, give our prayers.
Let us pray during this month of the Rosary for families who may gather together in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, give our prayers.
And we take a moment to pray for our own personal intentions, the people we love and care for, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, give our prayers.
Lord Jesus, you are the source of healing and goodness. Your wonders never cease. Continue to be present to us. Help us, help one another in the work of healing. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you. The fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased with this sacrifice we offer with humble and contrite hearts. Lord, wash away all our iniquities, cleanse us of all our sinfulness.
Pray, sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
Praise and glory in his name for our church.
May this oblation, O Lord, we pray, cleanse and renew us, and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your superiors. Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty in our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through Him with great goodness you formed it anew.
And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
Holy holy holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory, O sanna in the yest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, O Sana in the You are indeed holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a perfect sacrifice may be offered to your name.
Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith.
Save us, savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have sent us.
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself.
Grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son, and filled with His Holy Spirit, may become one body and one spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leor Pope and Francis, our bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you, and your compassion, O Merciful Father. Gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world, to our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good, through him and with him and in him.
O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, our glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen.
At the Savior's command, informed now by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await in blessed hope for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ, for the kingdom, the power, and the glory. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
unknown Amen.
The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer one another a sign of the peace of Christ.
You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world grant speed.
Behold the Lamb of God, behold, who him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter to my roof and say the word and my soul shall be healed.
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
Let us pray. Having fed upon these heavenly delights, we pray, O Lord, that we may always long for that food by which we truly live through Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord be with you.
And your spirit.
Let us go in peace to love and to serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
