From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Sunday TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time. I am Archbishop Marcel Dampfus. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from an anonymous donor from Bellevue, Washington. This Mass is offered in thanksgiving to the Lord for all of his gifts and the mercy he continually bestows upon us.
Our thanks to our donor for making it possible for tens of thousands of faithful across Canada, the U.S., and around the world to share in this celebration. On this October 25th, the date traditionally associated with Our Lady Queen of Palestine, we remember with gratitude the members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem throughout the world.
Through prayer and charitable support, they serve the Church and Christian communities in the Holy Land, especially those most vulnerable, including widows, orphans, and families in need. We pray for their members and their continued good works and for peace in the Holy Land. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, peace be with you and with your spirit.
Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins. And so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world.
Have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world. Receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father. Have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One. You alone are the Lord. You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. And let us pray.
Almighty, ever living God, increase our faith, hope, and charity, and make us love what you command, so that we may merit what you promise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
A reading from the book of Exodus. Thus says the Lord, you shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. You shall not abuse any widow or orphan. If you do abuse them, when they cry out to me, I will surely heed their cry. My wrath will burn, and I will kill you with a sword.
And your wives shall become widows, and your children orphans. If you lend money to my people, to the poor one among you, you shall not deal with them as a creditor. You shall not exact interest from them. If you take your neighbor's cloak in pawn, you shall restore it to that person before the sun goes down, for it may be their only clothing to use as cover.
In what else shall that person sleep? And if that person cries out to me, I will listen, for I am compassionate. The word of the Lord.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the source of my salvation, my stronghold. I love you, O Lord, I love you, O Lord, my strength. I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
I love you, O Lord, I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord lives, blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation. Great triumphs he gives to his king and shows steadfast love to his anointed. I love you O Lord. I love you O Lord my strength.
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians. Brothers and sisters, you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord. For in spite of persecution, you received the word with joy, inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report to us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.
The word of the Lord.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all of your mind.
This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. The gospel of the Lord. And that happens in many different realities of life, in our work, in our relationships, in our family lives, and even in our faith lives, in our in our call to be a missionary church.
Sometimes when people take to heart this this call to share their faith with others, and people question them about their faith, they kind of say, Well, what is my faith all about? What is most important? And so today we have a clear answer from Jesus to help us see what is at the very core of our Christian belief.
We are told that a lawyer comes to him today asking him this question teacher, which commandment is in the law is the greatest? And so Jesus will refer to what is at the core of who we are created for. We are created for love. We need to remember that. A lot of people, I think, today are depressed, are lost, are confused, just don't know what to do with themselves because they've just forgotten how to love.
And so Jesus invites us today to love God and to love our neighbor. They go hand in hand. And it's a danger for us to just love God or just to love our neighbor. It's a kind of a balance we need to find in this invitation that Jesus calls us to, because it is at the very core of our being, to love God with all of our heart.
Like, what does that really mean? I think if you give time, it's really being intentional in your time for everything that you do that is done before God. And you say, in what am I doing today? Is that really showing the love, the respect that I have for God? Am I trying to please God in all things that I do?
I think there's uh something we need to check upon day by day as to, well, how much of God do I really love in all the things I do in life? And then to love our neighbors. It is not sufficient for Jesus to say, like, to just love God, that's enough. For Jesus, it is just as important for us to love our neighbor.
It is in our neighbor that we find God. It's in our neighbor that we can show the great compassion and mercy that God has planted in our hearts. And so the more we live that very love, this vocation, maybe you can think of Saint Teresa of Lisieux, who struggled for a time and just wanted to know, Lord, how how can I best please you?
Well, what is my calling? And and God revealed to her, you know, your vocation is to love. And so Saint Therese in her monastery as a Carmelite, she learned how to love God and to love her her sisters in the convent, you know, in such a way that it mattered to her every moment of her life. And so let us ask the Lord to grant us that grace to be able to live that love in a very authentic way.
And I I tell you, your lives will change. You will rediscover the joy within your hearts to know that you are a true disciple of Christ, and that in Christ you can please God in so many things. So let's ask the Lord through his Holy Eucharist to grace us, to bless us as we become more and more Christ-like in our day-to-day living.
Amen. Please join us now together as we pray the Apostles' Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen. Brothers and sisters, trusting in God's mercy and attentive to the needs of the church and the world, let us bring our prayers before the Lord. For all those remembered in the daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, that the Lord may hear their prayers, grant them consolation in times of difficulty, healing in sickness, strength in trial, and peace in their hearts, we pray to the Lord.
Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord. For the equestrian order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, that through the prayer, generosity, and service of its members throughout the world, the church may continue to care for orphaned children in the Holy Land, providing them with safety, education, and hope, and that these children may know the love of Christ and the protection of our Lady, Queen of Palestine, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Almighty and merciful God, you know the needs of your people before we ask. Hear the prayers we offer in faith, strengthen families through the grace of prayer, and protect children who are vulnerable, and bless all who serve the church and those in need through Christ our Lord. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and good of all, his holy church.
Look, we pray, O Lord, on the offerings we make to your majesty, that whatever is done by us in your service may be directed above all to your glory through Christ our Lord.
unknown Amen.
The Lord be with you and with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right and just.
It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours, he humbled himself and was born of the Virgin. By the passion of the cross, he freed us from undending death, and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal.
And so with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim.
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of the life.
Of me the mystery of faith, save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, your spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirers to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through him and with him and in him. O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
Amen.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
Amen.
The peace of the Lord be with you always. And in your spirit. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you, now and forever.
Amen.
And let us pray. May your sacraments, O Lord, we pray, perfect in us what lies within them, that what we now celebrate in signs we may one day possess in truth through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you. And may Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
