Hungarian DJ and producer Chiqito joins us on the Data Transmission Podcast, fresh from his return to Jamie Jones and Lee Foss's Hot Creations with his latest single, 'Marimbas', released on 30th October.
Five years after his 'Phantom Of The Opera' EP landed on the label, Chiqito is back doing what he does best. Stripping things down to the essentials, letting the percussion lead and making sure the groove does the heavy lifting.
Real name Acsai Attila, Chiqito has been turning out club records for well over a decade. His 2012 release 'Gangbang' on Cuartero's SANITY helped put him on the map, with support following from Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, DJ Sneak and Marco Carola. Since then, he's clocked up releases on Dirtybird, elrow Music, Toolroom, Snatch!, Suara and Repopulate Mars, building a catalogue that rarely strays far from the dancefloor.
His latest Hot Creations outing, 'Marimbas', is a fine example of that approach. Percussion takes centre stage, with a rolling groove and rhythmic hooks that keep things moving without unnecessary fuss. There's a strong connection to the hip-hop and funk records he grew up listening to, something that's been part of his sound since the early days.
And that same attitude runs straight through his Data Transmission Podcast.
Across 16 tracks, Chiqito gets straight down to business, opening with Mario Ochoa's 'Lockdown' before Maxinne's 'Bassline Kicks' and HEDR's 'Don't Stop The Music' get things moving. There's a cheeky detour through TLC's 'No Scrubs' courtesy of a TTG. edit, before cuts from Desoto and Lukaz push the mix further into club territory.
The middle section is where Chiqito really stamps his mark. His own 'This Is How We Do' appears early, while 'Marimbas', 'Funky Town', 'Dance To The Beat' and 'Just Like Dat' form a proper run of his productions, giving us a good taste of where his head is musically right now.
There's still room for a few discoveries, with DJ Ted's 'Who Said?' and BVSTIAN & Rainville's 'Oculta' making appearances, before Chiqito drops his own 'What's Going On' edit of Gio Rabelo's 'B2B'. Gabriel Pereira's 'Locked In' rounds things off.
It's a mix built around groove, track selection and plenty of Chiqito's own productions. No messing about, just house music made for busy dancefloors and those late-night sessions that always seem to go on longer than planned.
Chiqito's 'Marimbas' is out now on Hot Creations. Get stuck into his exclusive Data Transmission Podcast below and grab the release on Beatport.
