Let's stay in the West. Thunder and Spurs were the nightcap. There we go.
An exciting opening. I figured you guys would want to talk this anyway. It was a varsity game, man. JV game and shit. We're talking JV. It was a Western Conference Finals rematch. OKC pulled up to San Antonio looking for revenge. This time, the back-to-back MVP had a healthy squad. with a big rookie addition, and put the league on notice that the Thunder are back up. Let's take a look at the highlights if we can, please, Paolo.
Man.
Appreciate you and all that you do. SGA picked up right where he left off, finishing with a game-high 32 points, along with five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks, extending his record 20-point scoring streak to 141 games. But the biggest story wasn't just what Shea did offensively. It was OKC's defense welcoming the alien back to earth. When we had one of the worst shooting performances of his career, missed his first 12 shots in the game, tied for the longest streak of his career. When we had just 12 points on one of 13 shooting, he did have 13 rebounds in six blocks. But this game wasn't just physical.
It got personal. We saw early in the second quarter, Darren Fox threw Chad Holmgren to the ground. He did confrontation. Fox got a flagrant one. All three Williamses on the Thunder squad also got hit with hex. We will have more on that momentarily. But back to the action, if we can, please. That dude right there is a killer.
I don't want to hear nothing about no foul beating. That's skill work.
Thunder outscored the Spurs 31-16 in the second quarter. Included a 22-3 run. Took a 26-point lead in that quarter. 21-point lead in the break. Jared McCain got his big... Get back on the Spurs for some hard fouls during the playoffs last season. McCain had 20 points. Massive spark off the bench.
Six threes. Don't let the nail polish fool you.
And then Adai Mara.
Beat that shit and then ran the court. I'm getting a check right here. I'm stopping the game. And what'd he do? I'm stopping the game.
You can't stop the game for a regular dunk. Not for a regular dunk.
Yeah, I dunked on Wimby. Beat that like you stole something. I'm stopping the game.
San Antonio rolled out their three-guard lineups. Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 24.7 rebounds. Dylan Harper at 18.7 rebounds and five assists. De'Aaron Fox at 14. Seven dimes. Spurs tried to rally in the second half, but every time San Antonio made a push, SGA had the answers.
Yes, he did. Ted Holmgren also.
Nasty.
14 points, seven rebounds, four blocks. Anchored.
Cason Wallace.
Cason Wallace just got his bread.
Extension.
His bread-a-chini, Alfredo. Money well spent. And Jerry McCain, one more time.
Drake's biggest fan.
Put that on TikTok. So, Thunder weathered the Spurs' comeback attempts all night. Made a statement in the first battle of the new season. Gil, I know you watched that game. On your Arenas Network YouTube channel, did a watch party. Had some extensive thoughts. What are your biggest takeaways? Are you going to invite me over to the watch party, man? Yeah, that's crazy.
That's insane. Danny, did you get an invite?
No, I wasn't in the Lakers.
Yeah, but did you get an invite? I wasn't in the Lakers. Yeah, that's crazy.
Gil, what are your biggest takeaways from the Thunder season opening win over the Spurs, getting some revenge and some redemption heading into this season?
I don't know what happened with the Spurs program, but GGs, man.
It was cool. It was cool last season. GGs. Yeah, GGs.
OKC has. They have a guy, man, that's just brilliant at the game of basketball. And he manipulated he manipulates it to just to the point where you want to complain.
He just shot baskets.
He could have got a whole bunch of fouls because of the undisciplinedness of trying to guard him. He's going to sit here. He can pump fake. And at some point, you're going to jump. He can jump into you. He's just masterful at what he does. They also have potential lineups of putting all three bigs at the 3, 4, 5.
With Williams and Shea.
And there's nobody in the league that's going to be able to understand.
How to guard it. You know what I mean? But they have that flexibility.
I do hate, because they don't have Wimby, when they go four guards. I mean, they do have Chet. I mean, they do have Chet. He's like a Wimby defensively. I just don't like their small ball because those four guards aren't.
The most athletic. You don't like whose small ball?
OKC small ball. They give up a lot of offensive rebounds because Caruso off the vert can't jump.
Wallace can't jump. Who else is out there?
When it goes for smalls. Jerry McCain can't jump.
Right? So, AJ can't jump.
So, when they're out there against Castle and all those guys... they can give up a lot of offensive rebounds to them. And usually when the team is making a comeback, it's usually with that small lineup because it's like, okay, we're going to shoot it. Chet is sitting there at the three-point line or just playing defense, and they just get these little offensive rebounds on his guard. So that's the only thing I question on that side of the board.
I'm not– When it comes down to OKC, I ain't questioning nothing.
They're one of the best blends of young talent offensively and defensively that we have in this league.
Starting lineup, bench.
You look at the bench, you got guys like McCain coming off the bench. You got A.J.
Mitchell. You got Caruso. They added Mara.
The rich just keep getting richer. Oh, and then we got SGA starting the game off. He told you ahead of time, coming to the end, yeah, I think I'm the best. I think I got the hardware that allows me to say that I'm the best. Last night he proved it. This is supposed to be the best defensive team in the league?
Okay.
I'm going to go out here and get my numbers. For all y'all that are hating, talking about I'm a foul merchant, I'm only going to take four free throws. Don't worry about it. It's still going to be barbecue chicken. Castle, I love him on defense. Castle can't guard me. That's how SGA looking at it. SGA can't none of y'all guard me one-on-one. And that's what gets lost in that foul merchant talk is how– how incredible he is as an offensive creator inside the three-point line. See, everybody's playing behind the three-point line. SGA's like, that's cool. I'm going to take my threes too, but don't get it twisted.
I'm about to give you these tween tweens, these step backs, these hezzies, these middies. That footwork shot that he had where he pump faked and stepped through, that's crazy. Like, his footwork is impeccable. His timing, his handle, everything he does to the left, he does just as good to the right. And then he ain't afraid to pop off and let you know, yo, I've been there. He's coming to the game dressed swaggy as hell, and he's proving his point. Listen, last year we were hurt. We got knocked off, but we right back. And more importantly, I love that they took this matchup serious. Last year, they didn't take the Spurs matchup serious, and the Spurs were.
They said, okay, we understand. These are our contemporaries.
We're going to set the tone for the season right now, off the jump, in your hometown, get smacked up.
Dan, shift over to you.
I see you have the Spurs towel, elaborate Spurs setup on that side, a Spurs pillow. Spurs coffee mug as well.
Yeah.
You know, Spurs, my prediction yesterday and for the season, and I'm not going to switch on them.
Okay.
Okay, so you look damn good yesterday. I'm not going to lie. And they're probably going to win 70 games this year.
Oklahoma City?
They might win 70 games this year. And if SGA jumped 45 inches in the air, he'd probably be Michael Jordan. He's a less athletic Mike.
Like, he.
Got the footwork. He's efficient. Again, didn't need the free throws. It starts and ends with him. And you can't guard him. Not only can you not double him, but because he has help. But even if you did double him, he's going to figure it out. They added pieces, like Gil said, teams that lost last year got better. They added Mara.
They also got better by trading some pieces away. So other guys have a more improved role. Like Kaysom also has more crew, so they get more minutes. So they don't have to Hughes, Lou Dort, Isaiah Joe, like those guys are gone now, even though they're still very good. But they added Mara, who's not afraid. It made them deeper at the big position. So even when Chet goes off the floor, they got another guy behind him. Wemby goes off the floor, it's trouble.
Yep.
Mark Dagnall did some pretty damn good coaching yesterday as well. Like, they didn't allow them to get to the paint as much. They didn't allow Wemby to get to the basket or close the basket as much. He struggled. Also, Spurs, I mean, I think they were kind of forced with their hand with that three-guard lineup. I don't think it's the most effective for them, like success-wise, that formula.
Speak on that.
Hold on. Don't go right past that. Why do you think that is? Part of their superpower is their depth. And with Dylan Harper coming off the bench and him going against their second unit, that made them trouble. And also gave them more floor spacing. When you have Champagny and Vassell, you got more shooting. Those guys are more of attack, the rim guys. You don't need three of them on the court at the same time. And they're bigger, too. Champagny, about 6'8, 220? A little bit taller, but again, they did more floor spaces. So now you've got two of them that can attack. Now you have three guys that are not catch-and-shoot guys. They just attack. You can shift more.
You can be at the paint more. And you're going to force them, even though Castle hit some yesterday, force them to try to beat you from three, which is not naturally what they do. But they're still going to be good. They're going to win games regardless because they're just so talented. Most of the league, but against OKC...
it's going to be trouble.
But that's an excellent point. Because they got the young dog, they don't want to come off the bench no more. Now they're trying to... Because Harper no longer wants to come off the bench, and the Spurs know, we don't want to piss off our young superstar. Now he's in the starting lineup and we know the Spurs are going to be one of the best teams in the league, but it might not hit the way we think because right now they're doing something to make Harper feel comfortable and at possibly the expense of the team.
We got to see how that's going to play out.
Yeah, it's a conversation. Again, we don't know if he wants it or they just felt like, you know, everything, the media's pushed that.
No, no, no, no, no.
No, the media pushed the idea of a finals, a sample size of a finals.
Yeah.
That the best player on the team needs to come off the bench. Mm-hmm. I questioned, what the fuck is their offense all year?
You said the best play they did on the team. Offensively, yes.
Say offensively because I thought you were talking about Fox is the best player on their team.
So I'm looking at this team last year and I'm questioning, Wimby, what do you do?
I know you have a lot in your box, but what is it?
What's your go-to?
What is your go-to move? What do you settle down with? I'm watching you just run up and down set screens. You're literally Chet. You're Chet. You're a third option player. But because you're so tall and you have a little bit more skill, you can get more offense. But for the most part, you float around the game doing much of nothing. You don't know where you want to be.
You don't know if you're a pick-and-pop player. You don't know if you're a post-up player. You don't know if you're a mid-range guy. One thing I do know, when you touch the ball, you're going to put it on the floor every single time. I don't give a fuck who's guarding you. You're going to have a little 5'5 guy guarding you. You're going to turn. You're going to be just as low as him. And you're going to put it on the ground. I'm watching it, and then I realize you can't get rid of Fox. You need Fox.
The only reason you actually get shots in the open court is because he's the fastest nigga on the planet, damn near.
With a basketball.
So when he does a pick and roll and he goes, if you don't already anticipate he's driving, he's laying the ball up.
He's in the basket. Now you got to help.
Then he's sitting there passing the ball for these guys to get the shot. When he goes off, And the two guards that are your future, remember what they do. We're one-on-one players. We're getting to the yams. Wimby don't exist in their mind. If you watch this, they don't look for fucking Wimby. They get that ball. They're trying to get to the rim. They do not look for Wimby.
For the most part, this nigga's running from the three-point line on offense, playing defense. Three-point line, and they're just going. And I'm sitting here like, I can't tell if– I see the box scores. I can't tell if he's having a good game or a bad game offensively. Where's his shots coming from? It's like he– I don't have no clue what he does in the summer or what they're doing in practice to prepare him to be great. I watched two seven-footers yesterday play like they want to be SGA. Right?
They got the ball. You're 7'6. Stand up first. Got the ball. Sit here. One dribble. Every single time. You put the ball up. One dribble.
And then they do this. They do the sweep through. By the time you come out of a sweep through, I can block you, big dog. You come out of the sweep through. And then you try to shoot. Like, you're trying to get the foul first.
Stand up. Like, if you stand straight up, you're 7'6. Then, how about this? Put the ball up here.
Put the ball up here. You're 9 feet, right? Let Chet do one of these.
Then you drive. But you're sitting here playing like this.
By the time you unravel all of you, they're on that. Both of y'all just look dumb as fuck.
I'm sorry.
I'm pissed off because the gifts you guys have.
You're not taking advantage.
You're not taking advantage of it. 90% of your basketball, you shouldn't even put the ball on the fucking floor. You grab that turn.
All right. All right.
You can even say, all right, throw these little passes here and there, little duck ends.
And then, man, what are we doing here?
I don't need to put the ball on the floor. I'm taller than everybody here. But you wasted the whole summer to come out there. after you done lost the finals, doing the same shit, to come out here and play the.
Same exact basketball. And I'm sitting here like.
And I think that's the part for me.
Who's their best offensive player?
De'Aaron Fox. Okay.
And you said the media pushed.
For the team, De'Aaron Fox.
When it comes to just gifted, Dylan Harper, he's doing things that as a defensive player, you don't see it coming.
It's this weird thing with him.
He jumps at, you know, like righties, we jump like this for that lean.
We don't jump lefty, right? We jump righty.
He's coming with his right hand, jumping like he's a lefty, and then finishes with right, which you would not.
See it coming.
He's ambidextrous. He's very good at finishing. Yes, he can finish very well.
He has great body control. And I'm sitting here like... One of the best players. Goddamn. You know what I mean?
You need to start because individually, you're that good. But when we're talking about our team, Fox advantage opens up the floor for everyone.
When just the two.
are together, you're just watching that it is hard.
That's hard basketball for them.
Like, think about in the fourth quarter when New York was coming back.
Who was the two?
Individually, one-on-one, they're better than who's going to be in front of them. They're going to bully them. But when it comes to the other three players, they're not getting that rock.
And I think that's why OKC.
Gil made two points about championship teams that I've never thought of because I've never played professionally like you guys, so you guys got a lot more information than me. But he said two things tonight about hunger and adapting, right? I think OKC losing to San Antonio last year makes them hungry, and I think they've made the adjustments to go get the rookie they got. They got the young boy that could shoot that came in last year.
So....
To me, they look like the best team set up, like that's a championship team. From watching them from day one yesterday, they look like the championship team. And another thing with SGA, SGA is like he's bringing back like the basketball I grew up on. When I was a kid, they used to tell us don't shoot threes, don't do certain things, don't take these high percentage shots. He gets right into that paint, and he creates in a way that's like so unique to where he gets these shots off and he's able to score moments that most people can't and i think with the team that they have around them the way that they've adapted and them losing last year i think them coming out last year i mean last night was a way of saying y'all got
us fucked up yeah sure about to make this.
But it came with that mindset and god agree with you that they do need fox i disagree with you that wimby don't like Nah, it's game one.
You was aggressive. Your take was aggressive. I see what you're saying. It was aggressive. It was a little over the top. I said this all last year.
I said, what is their plays?
What is their go-to plays? Like, what do they actually do?
1B, sometimes he can look, again, like Cat. He can look like a guy that you don't want to give an extension to. Some nights, you're like, damn, he's worth more than that. Last year, game one of night one, Wembley was, what, 40 and 15 against Anthony Davis?
Yeah, what did he.
He wouldn't have had that same take.
What did he... I've had... What is he doing? What is he doing?
He's actually doing what he's supposed to. Just run to the fucking basket. Yeah.
Run to the basket. Because if he's running to the basket, what do you have to do?
Grab him, hold him, do that.
He's going to get those stored up there.
But he can knock down shots. He's very skilled. He's a skilled player. He's not the best offensive skilled player, but he's their best player for sure.
Offensively?
Offensively? Offensively. He ain't Chet. No, no.
He definitely ain't Chet.
I don't know if they have the same trainer. I don't know.
I'm looking at two seven-footers sit here and just.
It was a bad night for them.
It's a bad night because it's like.
Are you not watching film on your mistake?
But you went from one night to saying he wasted his whole summer.
If that's my faith, if you practice all summer and you come out here and your defense, your offensive, I'm looking at your play style. You look exactly, all of you, like the fourth quarters of the finals. What are y'all doing? Well, here's the thing.
I can't base game one off this summer.
I agree with that.
Nor could I base Jason Tatum's first game off his summer or Jalen Brunson's game off his summer.
No, no, no. I'm looking for the plays. Where the play is at? What are y'all doing? He's being aggressive.
Dagnall did a good job of keeping them away from the basket.
No, no, no.
His game expands when he makes that first three ball. He hitting some shots. I'm glad you said that. I'm glad you said that. How tall is Wimby? 7-4. Your game can't be based on the three balls. It's not based on that, but it opens up more. If they keep him with the basket, he's the first shot. Now it's like they have to guard him out there. They ain't guarding him out there. They letting him shoot.
You know what I call that?
He's like, you ain't going to dare me to shoot because guess what? I'm going to shoot that.
Guess what? You know what I call that, Danny? I call it hustling backwards.
When you're 7-4, 7-5, you don't start the game out from three. You start the game out right here. Because at the end of the night, when you look at the stat sheet, you need to be like, ooh, that 7'5 was aggressive in that paint.
That's that. Wimby needs to be leading the league in paint points.
Now, once again, I'm not going to go as far as you. Because you were a hell of aggressive and kind of disrespectful.
Hold on, let me cook.
Let me cook.
You had to rock for a minute. But to your point, with Wimby being in San Antonio....
Tim Duncan and David Robinson just in town.
He don't need to go nowhere and hang with the monks. He don't got to go fly across the nation and.
Go work out.
Just work out with what those guys were doing. Once again, I'm not trying to sound like the old guy. I'm not telling you to play like it's 1992, one bounce, two bounce. But Wimby has to be able to control the game. from 15 feet on in when that game slows down. He also needs a simple move, like a nice little quick jump hook.
For sure.
When he gets in the lane and see.
He works in the Malone area.
Yeah, what I'm saying is that starting the game off with the three, or even when he hits certain shots because he's talented, I'm amazed when Wimby at 7'6 is tween, tween, tween, step back three. But man, that's all fluff, no substance. Because in a playoff series, how many teams are going to really be like, man, we're scared of him shooting the tween, tween, tween.
Step back three.
And listen, when it's time to win, if the 7'6 guy is playing like he's a 6'6 guy, the other team's like, yeah, Matter of fact, we hope you take, we hope you shoot a couple more. If you go back and look at the playoff records, what was Wimby's playoff numbers or what was the win percentage when he was taking seven plus.
Threes in those games?
It was always bad because we want 7'6 to beat us from the perimeter. What Wimby has to address, Wimby is cold. Wimby is one of the better young players in this league. But if he wants to be a guy that starts winning championships consistently, It starts with him dominating the league from 15 feet on in and having a skillset move. Whether that, I'll take it back to old school Dirk. Dirk was like, yo man, I'm not playing back to the basket, jump hooking like I'm Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but that one leg fade away carried us. Bam, one bounce, get to it. You gotta, you gotta, because when the game slows down, whoa, whoa.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey, all right, it's five minutes to play. It's a tight game. We're going to throw the ball to you right here. Everybody needs to know what you do. I'm going to tell you the significance of Dirk's one-leg fadeaway jumper. Because we knew what he was going to do, it allowed the role players to know where to go.
We based offense off that. Dirk's going to catch the ball here.
Hey, when they catch here and they double, Brendan, Tyson, Chandler, we need you on the baseline running action. When he goes this way, you're in the dunker spot. You're going to flash over here. Okay, now they're doubling over here. They're going to put him in the top of the key. We need you guys playing games on the baseline. Perimeter guys, when he catches the ball at the free throw line, I need you flattening to the corner. These are all things that are based on the fact that from 15 feet on in, big fellas like, it's my time. I don't care if you're putting Chris Bosh on me, Yadonis Haslam.
We winning the championship because it's my time. Everybody know where to go because it's my time. Guess what happened last year in the championship? Five minutes on the clock, Wimby, it wasn't his time.
Tween, tween, tween. That ain't going to cut it.
So, question. We're upset he doesn't have a signature move game one of the season opener. No, no, no.
Game four. Hold on. Let me get it. Let me get it. Let me get it.
Hold on.
This is game one. There's a difference between.
This is game one.
Hold on.
I'm not.
Of 82.
So you didn't see a signature move last night, and we're going to say wasted his summer?
I didn't say that. Gil said that. Don't put that on me. Can we just relax?
So we're going to say Jason Taylor wasted his summer.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
You just did shit all summer. Like, because they had one bad game. Like, it's a bad game.
Okay, when Kawhi was working on his jumper, right, and he was perfecting that jumper. You did not see the new improved game one. You see, even if he's missing it, you see he's working on that. Dwyane Wade came back with the bank shot. You can see they've been.
Actually working on this.
All I've seen, if we watch this game and watch him last year, the same team. Whatever guard gets it, they're going to come down. Wimby got the rebound. He outletted it. They're coming down. They're going to sit there and try to get their man off. Boom, boom, boom. If not, he's going to take a flare screen. They're going to pass it back. Castle's going to get it.
Castle's going to try to do his thing. Wimby might do one of these.
Okay, let me pass it back. I'm sitting here like.
It looked the same.
What is this? I don't even know what he did.
I don't even know what he did. Shot-wise, I even called it out. SGA at the end of the third quarter took a shot. I said, you shouldn't have done that because it was 12 seconds left.
And I said, and he starts going, whoa, no, you take the last, last shot. But damn it, you were two-time MVP. You know what I mean? But I was taught.
You don't leave no time on the clock for somebody to score or something else to happen.
You got to end one.
They came down and that's when Wimby got his, that little dunk, the little lob dunk.
His only bucket of the game. You scored, you scored three, you gave up two when it should have been 2-0.
So let's, let's listen to what Wimby had to say after the game about his offensive performance. Obviously just one for 13 from the field, 12 points. But let's hear what Wimby had to say.
I feel it is obvious for me. I need to go back to playing the basketball I like.
You know? It's, um... I don't like.
This is not the sport I like right here, so. I got no reason to be hesitant, no reason to not be myself.
It's, uh.
For me, it's as simple as that.
I'm good when I have fun.
Were you getting the shots you wanted and just missing them?
Or was it getting better shots?
I mean, at some points, yeah, I missed lots of shots, which I usually don't miss. But after that, it was, um... I didn't go back to these shots and I didn't, I don't know, I wasn't decisive. It's, I might be overthinking it. And I feel like it's a chance for me that what I have to do is really let go.
It's not, I don't need to do more. I need to think less probably.
There you go.
Oui, oui.
That's game one.
That sound like last.
Oui, oui. Does Jokic have a signature move?
Yes.
Hell yeah.
What is it?
What's Jokic's signature move? Put that back to the basket.
Listen, hold on.
His signature move is what? Back to the basket signature move?
Turn up on him, Danny! Hold on.
As you're what for Jokic? He's a basketball player. You don't need a signature move to be fucking nice. He's nice.
But you know, when he put that back to the basket, he's paid out. He's getting that damn there every time.
Hold on, hold on, hold on.
You.
Were you on the team when the Lakers lost to Denver?
No.
You weren't on that team? No, we won, bro. Okay. No, no. No disrespect. You're a champion. No disrespect. You're a champion. I don't know that loser shit you're talking about. No disrespect. No, no, no. I want to try. You was on the team when we beat Denver. No, no. Jokic has the somber shuffle. The one-legged fadeaway.
The Denver that we beat, was that the same Jokic that came back the next year?
Heat.
Yeah. He changed his game a little. Yes, he was. We didn't have, they had AD, Dwight, JaVale. We had less niggas to guard him.
No, I'm just talking about throughout the league. When he got punked by y'all.
He was still, he was still, you asked the question, what's Jokic's go-to move? We have seen Jokic run down the lane.
Have we seen AD with a go-to move?
Huh?
AD isn't Jokic.
Have we seen Joel with a, what's Joel's go-to move?
Uh, he's going, uh, pump A3 drive left.
Yeah.
Pump that drop out. Pump that drop out. Okay.
But he got moves, a plethora of moves.
It ain't just one move. No, no, no.
You can do multiple things.
We're not saying, once again, I still know that Joel can, once again, what's Joel's move?
A little hesitation shot.
But he can jab, jab, face you and hit that jumper. But I'm glad you brought up Jokic because against AD, what was he doing? In that run, he was running down there. I know you're bigger than me. I know you're athletic. Quick seal, jump hook, pump fake, step throughs, up and under.
It was, hey, listen. He was shooting shot clock like this.
It was in last Jamal became.
Don't get it twisted.
He's good enough to hit the tough shots.
But what you do is you start with your base.
His base was, hey, I'm about to run down the lane, get big, draw a foul, jump hook with either hand, drop steps, up and under, step throughs, bumps, all that dirty work that a lot of big men don't want. It's dirty in there. You got to have some fight to go in that paint and get dirty. A lot of guys don't want to do that.
Big fella did that.
That's why he was able to win a championship with no all-stars on his team.
Bruh. When was the last time you seen somebody win a championship with.
No All-Stars on their team? Even LeBron James didn't win with an All-Star.
Lakers weren't the same Lakers. That was the difference.
Jokic had a different.
like, I remember when you guys beat Miami, right?
Good times.
Speak up.
Good times.
And you guys beat Miami. And I remember that following season, Bron coming back with the black mask. And Bron was on some, like, fuck everybody.
But you know what else he came back with? A mid-range. Pat Riley made him dominate for 15 feet on end.
I was just about.
To get there.
Don't, my bad.
I'm overcooking the grits.
I'm a little too excited.
He came back with this fuck you mentality, but he also developed his mid-range. And he developed something that he could go to at any given moment when things was looking scary.
Right? I hear y'all. It don't sound like you hear us.
I hear you. Ron don't have a signature move.
Yeah, he do.
It's his fade.
He got it five years ago. No, no, no. Five years ago.
No, no, no.
He developed that six years ago.
He's 42.
Wait. Yeah, the one in the pause phase. He developed that six years ago.
When I'm saying signature move, I don't mean Michael Jordan signature fade.
Okay.
Yeah.
The game of basketball for the greats.
90% of it is simple. Right? It's a simple game. Tim Duncan posts up. It's a simple, all right, bank.
All right, bank. All right, fake, dribble. I'm milking you. When Wimby comes down the court.
Every possession is very new.
You don't think he simplifies the games that obviously didn't look great last night. There's a lot of times the game looks very easy for one of these.
It's very easy if Fox is doing what Fox is doing. Even when he's not. No.
There was games Fox didn't play well. OKC game. What was the game? We had 40 and 20.
What game was that? I don't think Fox played.
And that was a game because the game before that, it was the same shit. And I'm like, yo, I said, Wimby, look how they're playing you. You're 7'6.
Run.
Just start off the game. Run right to the rim. What are they going to do? Grab you. Hold you. Try to physically.
You're going to get three, four fouls just that alone. From there, then you can manipulate the game.
I agree.
I'm watching a 7'6 guy. Seems like he's being trained. like to play like my son.
I agree with you.
Hold on. I'm a trainer.
Keep cooking with that because that's a problem with this league.
No, listen. I train.
I look at manipulation. My job is to look at feet, pattern, human behavior.
Look at your tics.
I'm watching a guy who grabs the ball like this. He sits and then he's going to swing through.
This is a 7'6 guy's One, you cannot shoot.
100%, you're not going to shoot the ball like that.
If you started off just like.
This, defense has to change because you can pass here, you can shoot here, you can.
Do a lot of shit. When you're coming like this.
100% of the time, he's going left. Going left, he's going to go left, he's going to try to pick it up like this and hopefully he gets a foul. If he do go right, Which is weird. He doesn't understand one too simple. He's at a goal right.
First step.
Over the top.
He's going to try to throw it up and go get it. It's a weird pattern. And I'm sitting here, yo, 95% of your game, just get the ball, sit here.
Right?
I will run plays like this. Get it here, a castle backdoor first play.
Boom.
Second, get it here, take this shot. Sit here, come fake. Don't be on Jokic's side now.
No, no, what I'm saying is it should be a count.
I'm being a basketball player.
You should be a combo like I'm wish you have different moves.
You have a different package For different people who's guarding that's that first play back door second play shot Let me third play pump fake drive like you.
Let me ask you what you're saying is have a set of things.
Does Yoko's not have several things that he can go to from.
15 feet on it. Yes That's all I need, Wimby. Once Wimby.
Because first of all, I'm going to be fair. I'm going to be fair. I'm not disagreeing with y'all.
Hold on a second.
All I'm saying is game one.
No, no, no. No. I'm not.
It's all we got, Danny.
He just said, I might have overthunk it. There's a lot of games where he does not look that difficult. He doesn't score that hard. He can simplify. Sometimes it is freestyling. Like, guys, Jokic, Kessler, I don't... Whoever's open, I'm going to take it. Some guy's freestyling. He might do that. Now, last night was a bad game. I'm not going to say he wasted a summer.
He doesn't have a signature move.
I'm not talking about just last night. I'm talking about since he's... We have years of him being in the league.
We have 81 more games.
You're right.
First of all, he's only 22. He has a lot of time.
When Wimby.
Wimby is going.
To figure it out.
And when he does, it's going to be his league. But it's not going to be his league until he figures out from 15 feet.
It might be his league right now. We don't know that because we're basing it off game one.
I'm just telling you what I feel. I'm not telling you what I feel.
We talked MVP conversations already before the season started.
And have you noticed? He finished second in voting MVP?
When people talk about MVP, have you always noticed they're using the defensive part of The MVP.
No. It's never the offense. Are y'all not watching the game? People forgot about it until he brought it to light last year. Come on now.
When do they go to? When do they go to?
Is Wimby the offense or is he part of? He's part of the offense. part of.
He's a superstar that is part of the offense that doesn't start or end with him.
He could be the offense.
He could be. That's what I've been waiting for. No, they do not. He is the talent.
He's only 22.
He's only 22.
What the fuck?
We don't have talent around him.
No, what I'm saying is.
He can be like this on a day-to-day basis. It starts with him. Better believe it does start with him.
Remember, he is the MVP, and they're treating him like he's the third, fourth, obviously.
That's only on certain nights.
That's every night.
No, I can't do that. Can't do that. It starts with him. It's starting and finishing with him.
Do y'all really want to do a watch party? And I'm going to sit here and go, all right, play one.
I bet you game two we'll see a different Wemby.
Get the ball.
Let's do watch party.
I guarantee you.
I bet you we see 30 and 15. And that means the guard.
And it's going to start with him.
That means the guards ain't driving.
They still drive. It's just they ain't going to start with him driving. They're going to get the Wemby first. Then they're going to start driving. And then the Wemby's going to finish the game.
There we go. Drive.
Like, if they start with him, then we're talking about something different.
But I can tell you.
The natural order of that team is outlet these guards go. That means as a coach, if you have to remind everybody, hey, let's get him involved, then naturally these three guards don't think he's that guy offensively.
That's true because I.
If I know I got fucking Shaquille O'Neal on my team, I know damn well I'm not going to be sitting there racing down the court and just.
Trying to do my thing.
Because I know, oh shit, he's going to say something. Right?
Bruh.
So if you have to remind me, hey, we need to get Wimby involved more.
I guarantee they're going to.
Brennan.
They're going to look at each other like, right? Because all they do is pass the ball to each other. Brennan, time out.
Do you think they have to remind these guys to get Wimby the ball?
It looks like that.
Absolutely fucking not.
Hold on, hold on.
Every time they look and they're like this.
And they go to draft and they're looking like this.
It was times in the finals where I'm literally looking at Castle and Dylan Harper looking for Wimby in the paint.
He's not there. And they're like, fuck it.
They ain't got to remind them. So to your point, I do think there's a little bit of truth to what you both are saying.
They know to look for Wimby. But when they come down, if he don't establish it, they're confident enough to be like, we ain't just going to make it all about him.
We're going to go off on our own. And he knows they're good enough too, so sometimes let them rock.
And that's why, once again, Wimby's only 22. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. And it is only game one. But what I'm looking for is over the course of the next three to four months, I'm watching him to see if he's going to develop the skill set from 15 feet on in to dominate when the game slows down.
The first thing you said was Wimby likes to start outside.
That is a problem.
It starts for him at 7'6.
You said something kind of like that.
But it starts for him with rim runs and post-ups. That is where he is incredible. Think about that first game he played against OKC when he was rim running and spinning and ducking at 40 and 20. How many threes did he take?
Not many.
It wasn't about the threes that game. It was all about what he was doing in the paint. I want to see Wimby damn near lead this league in paint points. I want to see him have those moves when the game slows down because I know if he does that, the rest of the league can't mess with this dude because they already almost can't mess with him now. He might still do that. He might That's why I said, what did I just say? I'm watching over the course of the next three, four months. I'm not overreacting to one game like somebody. I ain't going to point no fingers.
It was just one game, but let's talk about an interesting moment in that game. Things got chippy early in the second quarter with both teams giving the fans a glimpse of what they can expect from this burgeoning rivalry moving forward. So let's take a look at what went down. Second quarter, De'Aaron Fox threw Chet Homer.
To the ground.
A little wrestling, man.
Big boy. A little wrestling.
They got tangled up. Players from both teams got into it in the aftermath. As a result of that, Wimby, Jalen Williams, exchanged some words. So De'Aaron Fox assessed a flagrant one for the foul, which we will see again. Momentarily right here.
Yeah, one flicker and one, couple technicals. All the Williams has got three technicals.
Every Williams on the Thunder roster got a tech. But I'm more looking at Chet Holmgren, obviously. We can say he got punked last season. You got De'Aaron Fox now throwing him to the ground like that.
You think he sold it a little bit? or you think he really.
I just think those two extra pounds he put on were not beneficial to him.
So you think he really got... I think he sold a little bit. He only 215 pounds. He didn't sell it.
So you think he really treated him like a child?
Yeah, he ragdolled him. He did get ragdolled.
All right.
Fox giving a flagrant one for the foul. Like we said, Wimby, Jalen Williams, the good Jalen Williams, and Kendrick Williams all assessed technical fouls as well for their acts after the play. So after the game, Fox was asked about the flagrant one, said, I just tried to take a foul. I don't think I'm that strong. But when y'all see this, are we enjoying it? I enjoyed watching it.
I think he sold it. I think he sold it a little bit. I mean, he is lighter. He's not light.
Fox ain't.
I think he tried to sell it.
Hood strength though, Danny. I think from Chet's standpoint, I don't think you got to do nothing dirty. But you know.
You might have to. I don't think Chet got to do nothing dirty. Nothing crazy dirty. He ain't got to do nothing crazy. He ain't got to do nothing dirty. But no, it's just one of those ones where, you know, Gil, you've seen it.
Hey, man. Run buddy off my side off a pin down action. Pow!
Hit him. You got to let people know.
Hey, listen.
We had this happen in Dallas. Kendrick Perkins popped Dirk, right? And I got in there and I was trying.
To be a peacemaker.
And Rick Carlisle was like, yo, somebody touched, somebody, somebody fouled Dirk hard, we don't need a peacemaker. We need, we need the other team to know you don't touch the merchandise.
She don't touch it. Don't touch the merchandise.
Hey, hey, listen, you, you ever been in them high-end stores just trying to, hey, hey, hey, hey, my man, you don't look like you got no bread.
Don't, don't, don't touch the merchandise, okay?
Like, that is what Wimby and OKC need to be on.
Listen, somebody pop your star like that, that's cool. That's cool.
Don't worry, touch one, touch, hey.
Touch him up.
You, you foul our guy? Yeah. We're going to try yours.
We're going to set the tempo. We're going to test your temperature and see what it's going to be. I think that's more of what they should have done in that moment, and especially Chet. Just a nice little back screen or something.
Boom.
Nothing dirty.
You ain't taking nobody out. Just let them know, yo, I'm here. That Chet from last year that disappeared, he's not here right now.
A new Chet's here.
And all this getting physical, throwing me down, we not having that. That was in the past season. This is a new time, a new era.
No, he got to make a stand at some point. Hey, Chet's got to, he got to, don't touch the merchandise.
He's the merchandise. He got to feel like that.
Is that upon him or his teammates to do that for him?
I think it's a little bit of both. Okay.
It's a little bit of both. No, he for sure got to do it. I agree with you. 90% himself. All the 10% of his teammates definitely.
I see, remember when Samuel Dallenberg fouled you hard? Hey, Samuel Dallenberg clocked Gil. Gil tried to run in the locker room by himself. You got to have a little bit of that. Like, hey, man, you ain't doing that. Now, I don't know what he was going to do when he got in there.
See, you got hands.
Nah. But long story short, he was really about that action. Like, yo, Dallenberg fouled him hard. I'm going to let him know, yo, once again, don't touch the merchandise, homeboy. You ain't fouling me hard.
So what happened is he did a pick on me, you know, like he tried to run back down.
I did one of those. He fell.
And then Coach called a chin. And I was supposed to brush his man.
Boom! And I just, like I'm just sitting there like, did he just hit me? I'm sitting on the baseline. I'm sitting there, hey ref, I think he just elbowed me.
And then when I'm watching a replay, oh, he did.
I'm seeing you after the game.
But once again, that's what it has to be from both sides. You clip Samuel Dallenberg, and he was like, that's cool. When you come through this lane, bow, test your temperature. What you want, big fella?
Yep.
That's what Dallenberg.
Did to you.
That's what Chet needed to do to Fox. Like, nothing dirty. Just let you know.
Do you think Chet got that in him?
It don't matter. I didn't have it in me either when he said it. It was like, he's a black belt. He's a black belt? He is a black belt. I didn't say that either. No, no, no. I don't got to ride with you. I didn't know he was a black belt.
So I ran back there knowing the guards got to stop me. Yeah.
I just need to let him know.
Hold me back.
Hold me back.
No, it's on.
It's on.
So you knew it wasn't going to go down, but you had to show him.
You at least saw the Wolf ticket.
Yeah, I was like, boy, I was selling. It was like, yeah, he's a black belt.
Shit.
I never knew he was a black belt. I had your back. I wouldn't have had it if I'd known that. Oh, my Jesus.
All right, well, let's keep this thing. We have one more game to talk about, and this should be an interesting one. I'm very curious to hear your opinions on this game. Celtics and Pistons open.
Oh, wait, hold on. Danny.
The JV game.
How many shots do you think Wimby took in the fourth quarter? Four. I think zero.
Zero in the fourth quarter?
I don't know.
How many minutes did he play in the fourth?
Seven, I believe.
Who led the team in shots in the fourth quarter?
Champagny. The guards.
They was down 20. They was down 20. They went from seven to 16 to nine to 20.
Just.
When you're watching the game.
But you're right, it's inexcusable.
No, no, no, no.
When you're watching the game, it's like watching this gifted man.
And it's like, I just want to say, you know what?
This is what's going to, starting these next 10 games, guards, if Wimby don't touch the ball three.
Times in a half court, and y'all shoot, y'all getting subbed out. Mm-hmm. I need to make a point who has to get the ball.
That's upon him, though.
Because if you allow gifted, like, Castle has an advantage over whoever's going to guard him, right?
He might not have an advantage, but probably against Jalen Brown, right?
Dylan, the way he was taught how to play as a left-hander, he has the advantage.
Yeah.
Over 90% of everyone is going to guard him, right? Unless you tell them, hey, pass the ball, they see easy work. So once they're coming, it's easy work in front of them. Same thing with Fox. Fox, though, he's the fastest team.
When he goes pick and roll, easy work.
So unless you tell these guys, hey, wait for him. They're not paying attention to him. And that's the sad part. I'm just watching like.
Inexcusable.
So you said you got to start with coaching.
Even with Chet.
This is what.
I see with Chet. Before Chet got body slammed, this is what happened.
Pick and roll switch. Fox on Chet. Chet is at the hash.
I'm sitting here like, yo, man, if you don't dive, dog, if you don't dive to that rim, he's 6'3.
But you know how many guards, how many big men in today's NBA are taught not to dive in that area? We see so many times that... We talked at the beginning of this show. We talked at the beginning of this show of how Philly is doing a great job of posting up. But if you watch the rest of the league, when they get the switch... they attack it way differently than what we used to do.
When we played.
Instead of the big running to the front of the lane, the big runs to the three-point line and the guard tries to.
Boogie against the big.
They play the game kind of backwards when they get the mismatches in that aspect.
No, no, no.
They played exactly how I played it, which in theory is this. If you're going to switch on me, if I pass it to the big, they're going to hurry up and double it, swing, swing, swing. If I have the big and I take the big, the rim protector is a guard, right? So I'm jumping over him or I'm dishing it back off to my big. That seems like better, but the league don't have, everybody don't have a Chet and a Wimby, right? So imagine I get to switch out on goddamn Dirk Nowinski and he's going to sit at the hash mark. Now that's why someone like Caruso can guard big guys because they're not going to, they're not just going to say, wait, hey, yo. run all you just run first thing we're gonna do hold and grab and that's what happened chet finally realized oh
shit and dove and fox oh shit and then that's why he had to body slam.
Him but it starts with the big actually like it starts with the.
Guy let me ask y'all this right so and i'm pretty sure coach in second i know this answer there's three people that could score the ball is it more effective for Wimby to just dive and demand the ball or the coach to do what Gil said and say make sure they get three passes?
Dive and go get the ball.
So it's up to him.
But even if he don't get the ball, it puts pressure on the defense to react.
It's still up to him to demand that to make that happen.
So they're trying to come back, so they're shooting threes and shit. That's probably why fourth quarter Champagne is fucking leading them in attempts.
But when Wimby does dive to the basket, first and foremost... He is such a force in the paint.
It's gravity.
Yes.
The whole weak side comes to him, and even if he don't get the ball, that's how you.
somebody open think about how.
Many times you see champagne wide ass open because when wimby went to the paint oh snaps with my guys three courting or fronting them so now i gotta come on the weak side and tag because if i'm late he dunking that thing And now they just fake this way, skip it, and it's one pass, maybe two pass.
Shot, and guys are getting wide open threes.
Got you.
All right, well, let's keep this thing moving.

All right.
Well, now let's shift back over to the Eastern Conference. Celtics and Pistons opened the NBA season with a rare 3 p.m. Eastern game when Dan near the entire country was at work and or watching Gil's Arena. We know a lot of y'all watch at work. We know your bosses are watching too, so they can't even hate. But after a shaky start, Pistons wasted no time reminding the league why they're one of the most dangerous teams in the East, whether or not Gil believes that. Overcoming a huge second half deficit with an equally huge fourth quarter run to get the first win of the season. Let's take a look at the highlights if we can.
Please.
So early on in this game, it was all Boston led by historic performance from Paul George, who was absolutely on fire. PG put up a game-high 38 points, knocking down seven threes while setting a Celtics franchise record for points in a debut. Also had five steals in the game. PG scored Boston's final eight points in the first half.
Five steals.
Then buried three threes in less than a minute in the third quarter, giving the Celtics a commanding 22-point lead with a little under nine minutes remaining to go in that third frame.
Pistons appeared to be cooked. Damn.
Yeah, he was on it. BG, are you with me? They were cooked. Pistons appeared to be cooked, but Detroit had other plans. Duncan Robinson, Javante Green caught fire. After not playing a single minute in the first half, Green completely changed the energy, scoring 19 points in just 18 minutes while hitting five threes. Detroit clawed back to within six, entering the final frame, but kept chipping away as they could.
CK Cunningham as well. Representing for the light-skinned, Jalen Dern. Javante Green.
Doing his thing.
Boston pushed the lead back to double digits in that final frame. But, fourth quarter, Pistons went crazy with a little over eight minutes remaining to go in that fourth. They were surrounded with a 23-0 run. Does JT simplify the game?
No.
Does not.
Pistons, 23-0 run to take control of the game. Duncan Robinson scored 11 straight points during that comeback. He had 21 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter.
We saw what it was. Right here.
Oh.
That's crazy.
Y'all said they didn't have udders. You may have been mistaken. Y'all been hating on this Pistons squad.
Y'all. Bow!
In perfect harmony. Are you going to disrespect me after I hit like three already?
Jalen Dern converted a huge three-point play. Nice little seal in the lane, Danny. That win be. Yeah.
They were doing their thing, but this blew this thing wide open. So, Cade Cunningham doing his thing in the game. Finished with 22 points and eight assists. Jalen Dern had 22 points and nine rebounds.
Azora Thompson chipped in 11 points and 11 boards. Huge on the defensive end.
Locking up Jason Tatum. So, Jason Tatum, just 13 points.
On six for 23 shooting.
He was 0 for 7 from 3, scored just 2 points in the second half. He was 1 for 10 from the field in the second half.
A couple bad defensive plays.
Did have 11 assists, though. Celtics outscored 76-55 in the second half. So Paul George delivered a historic debut, but Detroit delivered the comeback of opening day.
Danny, we're going to start with you.
What statement did the Pistons make coming back from a 22-point deficit to beat the Tatum and PG Celtics? Maybe the PG and Tatum Celtics.
I don't know the statement, but, you know, they still one of the better teams in the East. You got to respect them. Jalen Dern, he said, you know, I'm owed that money. Like, I'm worth that money.
Yeah.
You know, he played well. Obviously, Duncan Robson and Javante brought that extra energy from second half. PG came out, did his job. Boston looked like they struggled. Jason Tatum really struggled offensively and defensively with some possessions. But, again, I don't have high expectations for.
Boston this year.
I think they traded away or let go of a piece that was very important to what they do. It seems so. But PG's a good fit. He's a great fit for them, what they got going on. And I think he'll have a really good season this year because he's able to just play his game, just knock down shots, you know, drive, kick, shoot, one dribble, pull up. His game is simplified. It's going to be a lot on Tatum.
He has a lot to prove this year.
Yeah.
That's what the people are saying.
I think if Detroit get a score, they're going to be one of the most dangerous teams.
Second one?
Second one outside of Cade?
Another one.
Yeah, second one.
Like, they need somebody. Because Cade got a lot of responsibility. He does a lot of passing the ball. He's a very good rebounder as a point guard. But I think the minute they get, like, Somebody that's just naturally good with putting the ball in the back. I'm not saying him, but somebody like a Cam Thomas or somebody that's just naturally.
Zach Levine would be good.
Zach Levine.
On the wing.
Yeah, somebody that's just naturally good.
You know, Zach is going to be looking to probably move some pieces, and you know Zach can score.
Yeah.
I think the minute they get one of them, they're going to be real dangerous coming out of these.
Okay.
This one got MPJ, bro.
Huh?
Yeah.
That's a good one, too.
He's another one, yes. That's a good one, too.
Brendan Celtics, new look Celtics squad. Trade it. Jalen Brown away to the six. He brought in PG. PG, 38 points. Did his thing. Jason Tatum.
Was that a record for a debut? For Celtics debut.
Okay.
Not for a league debut. What's the record for a league debut? Let me check.
What's the point of that?
That's a lot of damn points, man, for a debut.
We was here yesterday, and we're watching it. And you remember when I made that comment, like, yo, Jason Tatum.
43 by Will. Just get the win. Okay. Just get the win.
Mm-hmm.
The pressure of having to play and be something, just get this win.
That's all that matters. 50 from Kyrie, excuse me.
Because I've seen what could possibly happen.
I'm supposed to be the man.
I'm supposed to be the man.
And what's going to end up happening is the guy who's on fire that they think is washed is mopping their ass.
Right?
Like, there was a point where Jason Tatum get the ball. There's a Sar and then they got a baseline. They're not, you're not, you're not going to do this. We want you to swing, swing.
Yeah. Right? So, yeah, they're just sitting there. They're going to sit on this wall. Right?
So, are you going to force shots trying to prove you're the man of a team you prove you were the man from the first day you got here?
Is that what you're.
Going to let this NBA circus try to convince you that You're not the man of a team you've been the man of the whole time. And you're going to lose this game trying to prove that.
Why everyone's going to be laughing. Right?
You haven't been here for a year. You came back and for the first time, they had to guard someone else. And you had to be the second option. You're just getting wide open shots.
Right? He's MVP now. Kennedy, top six, top.
Seven last year at the moment in time when he came back. Everyone's doubling him, right? You're getting free open shots. Great basketball.
He's gone.
Now, everything that happened last year is happening the year before. And every other year, you guys play together. You're the focal point. They're going to double you, make you swing it, and play like that, right? So now you got to sit there and do your little side steps and side steps and try to get these easy little baskets, right?
You're not in game muscle memory shape to.
Do that yet.
You need old school training camp. Yeah, you need to be grinding two times a day, playing.
Full court, get 12 minutes in. That's supposed to be you. You sitting here doing this.
Normal shit, thinking your body's right because you're playing against the guys you're playing against.
Nah, man, you're going to struggle. You're going to struggle for months. Back and forth.
I remember the 06-07 season. First game of the season, I got seven. Next game, 44.
Next game, 17.
Next game, 34. I'm sitting here going back and.
Forth, and I never got hurt.
But what plays a part in going from 44 to 17 the next game?
Just everything.
Just haven't figured out the rhythm yet.
Like, then we're playing so much defense, trying to get our defense right. And our offense is kind of, you know, you had to be fucking smart to be in our offense.
Right?
And just getting the timing down and what plays is going to work. So we're going through a whole bunch of stuff. And then once we start dialing it down, looking at everything. Because we were working on trying to add something new. So it's like, all right, we got to add this. Okay, we're going to dump it in a little bit. We're going, okay, Brendan's going to, you know, he's going to do his little dribble handoff. Like, okay, the motherfucker keeps going right.
All right. All right, let me fake it and go back this way. I need that rock. And you caught on. Yeah, I caught on quicker. You know, I come out, go left, and go that way.
Go left, and go that way.
You know what? Suck of this shit.
So, you have to learn everything everyone's bringing, right? Because Well, not last year. Everyone's worked on something this summer. Let's see what everybody got.
So it takes a little bit of time.
So watching him is like, I'm just looking, okay, see if his legs.
All right. See, you know, see what's going on. Right.
And it's like, don't, don't force it. It's a long season. Just get this win.
Right.
I've never witnessed someone take 23, 25 shots a night averaged 15 points. That's never happened in this NBA. You're going to be taking 25 shots.
You're averaging a 30. Right. You had a rough one. You're going to have plenty rough ones.
I don't expect to see any type of great form of consistency until.
Second half of the season.
Yeah.
You're talking about a guy who has not actually played with an Achilles.
You're going to have up and down moments.
And remember, that was my complaint last year when they was trying to get him back. I said, the one thing you don't want to do, and this is because I talked to Paul George one summer or one year, the one thing you don't want to do, you've worked your way all the way up until you can play. You don't want to tweak it. Go into the summer and rehabbing. So when I talked to Paul George, Paul George said, I mean, what did they expect from me, man?
I didn't get to do nothing last summer. I had two shoulder surgeries at the same time. I didn't get to work on no shooting. I didn't take no damn shot until training camp.
He said, I'm rehabbing both shoulders.
So, yeah, I'm going to hit the side of the fucking backboard here. I didn't get to take no shots. So six months, no shooting, trying off of rehab. And you're sitting there like, ah, damn. And you think about the summer like, yo, I didn't get to work out this summer because I'm rehabbing the whole time. And I was like, if he's rehabbing instead of trying to get his game back, he's going to start off the season rough.
Who did Kyrie have 50 with, his debut?
Brooklyn.
Brooklyn?
Nah, I was in Boston.
I said Brooklyn.
Brooklyn.
No, we don't know.
Was it Brooklyn? Brooklyn Nets. October 18th, 2019. I studied the game, baby. I just remember that game. That's why I was like, hey, hey, hey. Because when Kyrie gets 50, it's a loud 50. I remember that game. It's a loud 50. That's a loud 50.
It's a loud 50. So I have to say, PG did his job.
Yeah.
Yeah, he did his job.
Everybody did their job. The man, the face of the franchise. Who's that? It's your team now. Oh, Jason. The light-skinned DJ. Is his team now? Solely.
It was a dual.
What year was it? It was always Jason. He did have an.
Eastern Conference Finals MVP and a Finals MVP on the roster previously.
It was always their team.
From an organizational standpoint, they were always more aggressive.
They were known as the Jays, not the Jays. Media, it's always been there. It's been the Jays. Okay, in 2017-18, who's team was it?
The Jays. The Jays. The JT, a rookie coming in. It was Kyrie then. And who was the second option? Both on max contracts. I don't know. Who was the second option to Kyrie? Kyrie was there in 2017. Super Maxes. It was Tatum, right? The next year. The Super Max Jays.
Tatum.
All right, the 2020, the guy who has 23, NBA third team.
Okay, but Jalen Brown, a big part of Celtics success.
There's never been solely either one of them. Until last year. That's the problem. Jalen Brown has to do it.
We played seven years, and you're saying this is our team because of one year. And we share responsibility for one year. This is like Jack and Kobe.
Coming in in 96.
And then we say, oh, they spent the responsibility the whole time when it was just the last year.
No, it was like three years.
They're known as the Jays. I'm just telling you.
For like four years.
I'm just saying, Jason Tatum has been first-team All-NBA four times.
It was always.
Jason Tatum's team. It was always Jason Tatum's team. It was Jason Tatum's team from a scoring standpoint, from a game standpoint, and then from a front office organization standpoint, they always viewed Jason Tatum as the guy.
But it was Jalen Brown's team last year. It was Jalen Brown's team last year, yeah. The MVP defense, I mean, the NBA defense... We're going to double him. We're doubling Tatum. You're going to swing it. Brown is going to attack. That's what it was.
It wasn't double Brown and let Tatum play one-on-one basketball. It was double because remember back then when we're going to start these debates, Jalen Brown couldn't go left.
You remember that year? That was a whole year. Can't go left.
Push him left.
He can't go left.
The Warriors won the championship.
He can't go left. What ended up happening? He trained. He started working. Remember, he wore the glove.
He started doing this because he's letting you know, I'm working on.
My fucking skill.
I'm going to come back and I want you to push me left. He trained year after year, improving every single thing people doubted him about for him to be in this position and say, hey. I think I'm ready to take more of a responsibility.
He's hurt. I got this. I've tooled up. So he got to prove last year I'm a number one option.
The problem with this is they let the world do exactly what they.
Did to Shaquille and Kobe. Hey, whose team is this? You know, we know it was your team. You know, he won the finals MVP over you. He said, hey, man, this is your.
Like, you let that fool you instead of you being a smart organization and say, hey, Kareem and Magic did it.
Who was the number one option? Who gave a fuck? Who cares?
They're dominating you no matter what. They play the game together to beat your ass.
Right?
I have two number ones now. I had a number one, number two. Now I got two number ones.
1A, 1B.
When Kobe became 1A, 1B. Oh, hey, whose team is this? It's not Batman and Robin.
You, you, you, you, you, you's, you's, Batman too. Right? But did you know that's when they lost? Mm-hmm.
When it was Batman and Robin, three-peat. When it became Superman and Batman.
They don't know how to work together now.
Shit, Bron and D-Wave.
But they tried to do it again. Bron and D-Wave. I remember the game.
I remember it was June 17th, one of them days where the article came out where they started off 2-0.
Then the article came out 3-3. What's the name? It was like, whose team is this?
I'm like, I was listening to the TV thinking these niggas was down.
Whose team? Who's going to get the ball? Who's going to do this? Who's going to do that? And I had to look like, wait. No, they up 2-0. And then I thought about, like, ah, I get it.
But Wade took the initiative.
To say the word. Put the wedge into the group. Like, you don't have to. Like, I'm not getting rid of a guy as soon as he hits level one.
Like, that was the dumbest trade ever. I would have been on my knees.
What?
Yes.
I would have left that room. I would have left that room. We got him. We keeping him. He's here to stay. He's here to stay.
Y'all remember that tough shit Pat Riley was doing to Jimmy Butler?
What was the report? Please, Jimmy. Please. I was bullshit. I was just trying to do it for the rest of the team. Yes. Reality do kick in. I literally have a number.
Two option who turned into a number one option, and my number one option comes back.
Now I have.
Two fucking possible MVPs, and you're saying I'm going to trade them away to go back and get.
A number two.
I watched Steph Curry, number one option, and Kevin Durant, number one option, win championships. I watched LeBron James, number one option. Kyrie, number one option, win the championship. Watch LeBron James win the championship with two number one options. Dwayne Wade and Bosh win championships. Seems like these motherfuckers can do that.
You just give them some time to figure it out and put the right pieces around them. That's not what happened, though, Gil.
They won a championship.
They did. Jalen Brown finals.
In this NBA right now, having Jalen Brown at their age, 27 and 29.
They haven't even hit.
No prime of basketball yet. My two guys are both priming. And I just got to put pieces around two guys with damn near the same skill. Rebound, passing, one plays better defense, one.
Does more offense.
But together, I'm looking at a combo that can score 60, 17 assists, 20 rebounds.
Why the fuck am I going to get out of the way?
But you speaking from like a GM perspective, what if them niggas just didn't like each other?
I don't give a fuck. I don't care. It wasn't that they didn't like each other.
They didn't have, like, from what I was told, they didn't have a real beef, they just weren't close.
Yeah. like that's kind of not like.
Anything it's different i'm glad you said that because a lot of fans think that because guys don't hang out they don't like each other sometimes it's just like there's a lot different it's different groups like i think scotty and mike like all right me and gil didn't really hang out off the court because i was a video game guy at that point with playing madden he didn't play madden like that so i'm playing i'm i'm with the video game guys he's over there with nick javel and all yo man i'm not doing the silly stuff that they're doing But when we on the plane and we laughing, we having a good time. But I ain't never go to Gil's house in Virginia. He ain't never go to mine. Don't mean we didn't like each other
or else I wouldn't be here. You know what I'm saying? I ain't never been to your house. I ain't never been to Lake Cornell. I ain't seen the catfish in the back.
They were delicious. Yes, exactly. And that's the thing.
Okay, Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum didn't hang together.
So what?
The fact of the matter is they were great as a combo on the court. And even when I'm watching that game last night against the Pistons, what they really missed down the stretch was that Jalen Brown defense. I saw the defense that Jalen Brown was playing on Brunson. And I saw the defense that wasn't being played on Cade Cunningham.
I said they missed Jalen Brown. I said they want that old thing back. They're missing that.
The thing with Jalen Brown is he was one of the truly unique players because he could go out there and average 30. while going out there guarding somebody tough that averages 30. I know certain guys make it look easy. That is one of the hardest things in the league to do. Like, you have to put so much energy and effort into getting your points.
When you're capable.
There's only a handful of guys that are capable of being like, yeah, I'm going to go out here and be the central offensive main piece.
Oh, yeah, you know what?
Go put me on their central main piece, too, and I'm about to make life hard on him. And that's what they're going to miss this year, that guy that goes to the basket, that guy that can go get a bucket, but at the same time, he's like, yeah, throw me on Kate Cunningham. I can slow him down. Let's get to it. The Celtics are going to miss that.
That's why I agree with Danny. I don't have high hopes for this team. The Eastern Conference has gotten better. So the teams like the Phillies and the Miamis and the Torontos, even some of those young teams like the Wizards, this East is a lot tougher. I'm not sure if this version of the Celtics is going to be able to be as dominant as they have been over the past couple of seasons.
So the question is then, obviously, you don't got to be friends off the court, but haven't spoken much, Jalen Brown admitted that, since the trade went down. Brown's name consistently mentioned in trades, the Giannis, for example. So Tatum could have easily just went to front office like, yo, Cut that shit out. It was too late. We don't need to do all that. Let's ride out.
He might have thought that... Listen, let's not get it twisted now. He might have thought Giannis was a better player. I'm sure the whole world thought that.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
They were like, hey, Tate, we got a chance to get Giannis.
Who?
Giannis. Hey, don't tell Brown, but I'm with it.
You know what I'm saying? Why wouldn't he want Giannis?
And that don't necessarily mean he got a problem.
Yeah, that don't mean he got a problem, man.
It's good business. It's good business. Let's just be honest. I'm trying to win championships.
If it was Brown's decision, hey, we have a chance to get Jokic for Tatum.
Ship them.
Yeah.
Ship them. Jalen Brown, man of principle.
That's my dog.
Stop it. Don't break us up. Oh, my God. Here you go.
As being Jalen Brown and looking at everything he has done, you're talking about a guy who really spends the summer with his trainer.
You can tell he's in tune. I know his trainer, Dash. You can tell. They talk on the phone. Dash is going to call him and say, hey, I thought we worked on that. I thought we were here. Send me the tape. And they're going over. Because when you watch, like, even that spin, the year before that, he's running that nigga over. He's running through him.
He literally, he's spent right through it.
You're seeing in real time what he's seeing in Kawhi. Someone who is really saying, no, man, I want to get better in this game. Right? So you become an MVP candidate, and you are now at that level where you get to be Kawhi. I get to run my own team.
Mm-hmm.
To then get put in a situation where he can win another championship. I want to dominate this game. The Kobe's and the Jordan's, I want to show that I can dominate and make first team all NBA and first team all defense.
That trade takes that away from him. He's 29.
This is when, hey, these next three, four years, you get to be a healthy Kawhi Leonard. Like last year, when you watched Jalen, we was laughing because the majority.
Of it was he putting his hairline on everybody. Stop, man. Stop. Right? Interesting strategy.
No, that's what the headlines was, not realizing 35, 40, 45, 48, 45, like... Man, Tarman is out there killing these folks.
What's his name? Tarman. Tarman was out there.
He was putting that Beijing on them. Beijing Brown was out there.
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
He was twing, twing, twing. But the funny part is we was making jokes of it.
But he was still dropping for it.
And he was out here, like, doing work. Like, what Jalen did last year, like, we counted them out.
For sure.
They're done. Because they lost him. I mean, they lost Tatum. They lost Drew.
They lost the whole team.
And he literally, he literally wielded them.
And you trade them to a team like.
I personally would have been mad as shit. I didn't work fucking six years, man, to be a number one option or a number two.
I didn't sign up for this fucking shit right here. I'm going to just be honest. I've... So it's like you kind of technically.
Hurt both by the trade because now one has to prove he's the number.
One option on the team. He's been a number one option on, you know what I mean? So mentally prove he can do it without one.
Because I'm going to tell you this.
There's one thing that is going to be eating at him. Why y'all didn't do this shit before my Achilles?
Like, yeah, do this. Like, come on, do this when I'm healthy. Now I'm hobbling the hill.
I'm doing this. I'm not the same. I'm not the same person.
But you won a chip in 2024. With a messed up Achilles? No, I'm saying, but you won a chip. With a messed up Achilles? But you won a championship. Won a championship. He said that's why they didn't move him before, because they won a championship. But I won a move who before?
Brown.
You won a chip 2024. You probably weren't going to beat the Knicks 20-25 regardless of the Achilles injury, but.
You're still trying to. It's the same thing we're seeing with the Knicks now.
We're trying to roll back with this crew as much as we can.
I get it. I'm just telling you. I have a 27.
Then 26. Well, that's two years ago, right?
25 and 27-year-old.
They got time.
How much time do I have with this? That's what I'm saying. I think some things happen, and this is why I'm looking at the Spurs. You have a five-year plan with your group, right? You speed up to a place that you didn't see coming until probably 2030.
You got there last year.
Now, The expectations of you guys being there this year might be too much for the young group. Last year, we don't supposed to be here. Backs against our wall.
That's easy. Now, y'all supposed to win, right?
Now, if they don't get back to a place they didn't supposed to be, and I'm sitting here with a 22-year-old, a 19-year-old, a 20-year-old, a 26-year-old And then I got my other players that are sitting there with the same age. And I'm like, oh, we got to make some trades. I don't have to do shit for another six years.
I'm not going to do nothing for six years.
Time. It takes time to cook that Thanksgiving meal. Just keep tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking, tweaking. Like, that's all.
You have to do. It's little tweaks. You really sit down, look at how we play, look at the improvement, make a tweak. Okay, we might need a foreman. If Wimby can't get down there, let's get a foreman who likes to bang a little bit. right, that can get some easy fouls so Wimby don't have to get hit. I mean, I do have my guards that gets fouled, but I don't need my guards getting that many fouls all the time.
So you just sitting there tweaking until you find the perfect formula. But most organizations, they blow it up way too fast. And that's what I call it too fast, and they've been together for eight years. Yeah. But 18 and 20, God damn it.
What? That's true.
Ah! still got six years before I'm even thinking about a trade. But I would have considered the.
Giannis for sure.
For sure. You got to. All day. You got to.
Good place for us to wrap up today. Went a little long, but it is opening week. I appreciate you pulling up to the couch.
Real quick, I want to say something to my dog, man. Last year, I was going through a rough time trying to get out my record deal. He even gave us equipment to take home and figure out how to do everything. So I always tell you thank you. I want to publicly tell you thank you for pulling me out of a dark spot.
They might even know. I mean, you always happy, man.
