How do you say “I’m working” or “I’m eating” in Swedish? Unlike English, Swedish doesn’t have a special -ing form. But we do have some useful ways to talk about actions that are happening right now!
In this episode, we’ll look at two common Swedish constructions: hålla på att and sitta och. What’s the difference between Jag jobbar, Jag håller på att jobba and Jag sitter och jobbar?
We’ll also learn how to use hålla på med, as well as expressions like stå och vänta and ligga och läsa. And most importantly, when you actually need these constructions and when the ordinary present tense is enough.

Hey sankompisar! Välkomna till veckans avsnitt av Learn Swedish with Katrin. Today, we're doing a little deep dive into ongoing actions and how to describe them. We are talking about holapoat and sita ok. Both can be used when we talk about something that is happening right now or is in progress. This is interesting if you speak English because English has a special verb form for this.
We can say I work and I am working or I eat and I am eating. Swedish doesn't have a direct equivalent of the English ing form. We simply use the normal present tense Ya jobar I work I'm working Yater I eat I'm eating Ya Laser and book I read a book I'm reading a book. The context usually tells us what we mean, but there are also ways to make it clearer that an action is in progress.
Let's start with holapoat Holapoat is used when you want to emphasize that an action is in progress. A useful English translation is often to be in the middle of doing something. The structure is holapoat plus infinitive. Ya holerpo at lagamat I'm cooking I'm in the middle of cooking Honholpo at stada.
She's cleaning Vi hollerpo at ata we're eating We conjugate holla but the verb after at stays in the infinitive and we can also use the construction in the past tense Ya hollerpo at logamat I'm cooking ya holla po at logamat I was cooking. You'll also hear the very common question Vahol dupo ma which means what are you doing?
Meaning what are you currently doing right now? And it has somewhat of a negative vibe like what the hell are you doing? Don't do that But remember, you don't need hola poat every time English uses an ing form. Ya logar mot is also a completely normal way to say I'm cooking. Yaholarpoat logamot simply puts more emphasis on the fact that the activity is in progress.
Another common construction is sita. We use this when someone is doing something while sitting down. Why do we want to emphasize the fact that we are sitting? Um don't know. It just makes it feel more active somehow. I'm sitting and working I'm working. She's sitting and reading she's reading. Vi sitter och pratar.
We're sitting and talking. There is one important grammatical difference. With holla på att det second verb is in the infinitiv. Ja håller på att jobba. With sitta och bå verbs are conjugade. Ja sitter och jobbar. And in the past ja satt och jobbade. I was sitting and working. Vi satt och pratade hela kvällen.
We were talking all evening. So compare these three sentences. Jag jobbar. I'm working. Jagler på att jobba. I'm in the middle of working. Jagter och jobbar. I'm sitting and working. Ja jobbar is neutral and is often all you need. Jagler på att jobba emphasizes that the activity is in progress. Ja sitter och jobbar also tells us that you are sitting while you work.
You can combine the two and say ja sitter och håller på med ett projekt. Ja sitter och håller på med ett projekt. I'm sitting and currently working on a project. You can also say hollapo me instead of holopoat. Hollapome just means you are actively working on a noun instead of actively doing a verb. Ya holpo me min lexa.
I'm working on my homework. Ya holerpo me an överraskning. I'm working on a surprise. Vi holorpo mevor rapport. We're working on our report. You can also use the same type of construction with sto and liga. You don't always have to be sitting while doing something. Ya storoventar poussen. I'm standing and waiting for the bus.
Ya Ligerolaser I'm lying down and reading. But the important thing to remember is that you don't need any of these constructions just because English uses ing. Very often ordinary Swedish present tense is enough. I'm eating can simply be ya ather. I'm working can simply be ya jobar. But learning Swedish is not just about learning what to use when.com.
