Shownotes

Martin Willis sits down for a short chat with Anne Ramsey Cuvelier, who for years opened her historic Newport, Rhode Island mansion to UFO experiencers, researchers and investigators seeking a private place to share extraordinary encounters without ridicule. Anne recalls gatherings that included Dr. John Mack, Budd Hopkins, Barbara Lamb, Peter Robbins and members of the Allagash abduction case. Now 92, she reflects on a lifetime connected to the UFO mystery, including her father’s comments about unusual aerial objects, his friendship with former Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, her experiences investigating crop circles in England, and her memories of leading figures in the experiencer community. The conversation explores the stigma once surrounding abduction reports, how attitudes have changed, and the important role Anne played in giving experiencers a place where they knew someone would listen.

So I'm sitting here with Anne Colvoyer.

I'm so glad to be sitting here with you because I've heard about you for so many years and the gatherings you've had down here in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island.

So let's talk about what started you on this path.

I was a travel agent in the San Francisco area and one of my clients called and asked for a ticket to go to a conference in Las Vegas and I rhetorically said, oh, what kind of a conference? And They said, UFO. And I said, I'm going to. So I went. I was interested in UFOs. And then people, Bob Brown put the conference on. But then it moved to Laughlin. And Bob Brown, I was interested in UFOs.

But then people started talking about abductions. And I thought, well, okay, you know, I don't know what's going on with that. But when I was, my father had mentioned when I was, I don't know, 12 or whatever, he said, Damn this thing. These things hover, take off at incredible speed. And I said, what?

But that was the end of that conversation. Now, he was a good friend of Forrestal. And, you know, Forrestal and Kennedy, interestingly enough, you can edit this out if you want, but they both were researching UFOs. They both were murdered. Forrestal, very strange. You know, he was in the middle of transcribing Socrates.

He was out the window. right?

Yep, and he had his robe tied around his neck and the orderly who usually was at the door wasn't there at the time. It's very strange. Peter Robbins did a story on that. Anyway, my father was, as I say, very close to him. My father was Naval Academy, class of 24, and then he was a liaison for the Navy to Congress. So that's how he had some of this information, I think. But anyway, I started going And then I was on a UFO investigating trip in Puerto Rico, and I met a friend from Scotland who was also researching this type of thing. So then I decided, I invited them to the house, and then I decided to just invite people who had experiences and talk about everything, whatever came up in the discussions. We had many people

there And it was great to be able to discuss, you know, what was happening. Because not many people back in those days would even listen to you when you talked. Some of my neighbors would cross the street when those people were at my house.

This was here in Newport when you had your.

Yes, yeah. I had a very large 12-room house. It was a family house. It had been in the family since 1895. And a sideline of this... Lizzie Borden was a very close friend of our family. I have two forks that she gave us as a gift after she stayed with the family because they were convinced of her innocence.

But anyway, yeah, so I just, you know, fascinated with the subject and the veracity of the people like, you know, Jim and Chuck. She's talking about the Allagash. Allagash abduction and Jim's brother who just passed away, Jack, unfortunately. So they would come and... We would just talk about everything that would come up on the subject.

So it started out like an informal type of situation and then became a ritual?

Yeah, but it stayed an informal situation. We would sit around and I had lunch and dinner and breakfast for everybody. I had a wraparound piazza. And we would just sit and talk about everything. I remember one time Chuck was showing his slides and he showed One were the ETs who had opposable digits picking him up. And then Alita, who was... That's how they did it. I never could figure out how they could pick me up. So it was very enlightening for her to see that they had opposable digits. So that's how they abducted her. But, I mean, I feel these poor people who had been abducted and no one would listen. They're now listening. They're listening now.

Yes. Yeah, they are. And I.

I heard through Randall Nickerson, you know, about coming here. He said, well, I was talking to him one time. He says, tomorrow I'm going to Rhode Island.

We do this every year. And he really looked forward to it.

And it's, you know, something that I think a lot of people really.

Look forward to and got a lot out of it.

And I think, you know, a lot of this has to do with support. You know, people supporting each other and, you know, whatever happens. And I, like you, at first I had a, like, thought about the abduction part of it like whoa you know i had a ufo sighting but that's maybe going a little too far and then i over the years i've come to believe that you know these people are definitely experiencing something and what would we do we would do if we were exploring.

Exactly the same thing yeah people have yeah yep they've done the.

Testing and whatever yes so getting back all the way back to your your dad saying that so because i my um producer and better half, had a very similar thing. Her father just said, when she was 10 years old, these things are flying around, and we don't know what they are. And when he said those words to her, wait a minute, an adult doesn't know what they are?

Yeah.

And that's what sparked her interest. It sounds like sort of a similar.

Yeah, very similar.

But your dad would not talk about it. Did you ever.

No, that was the end of that, the conversation. But I never... I wish I had known. I would have queried him because he's no longer alive. But he was good friends of Forrestal. And as I said before, Forrestal and Kennedy were both researching this, and they were both taken out.

What do you know about Kennedy researching?

That's what I just heard, that he was just beginning to research the UFO phenomenon. Because I know Forrestal had been. Yeah. But... There's all.

Kinds of rumors about the connection of Kennedy and that type of situation in Marilyn Monroe.

It's all grouped in.

There like there may have been some secrets passed back and forth or whatever. Do you think that he was actively as president trying to get information?

I think he was. I don't know if that's why he was taken out but it might be why Forrestal was taken out because Forrestal was sitting in the room on the 15th or 16th floor of Bethesda which is the same hospital where my father passed away but yeah so I don't know very strange and that.

Was ruled as suicide jumping out the window basically I know but that.

Was they said it was suicide but he had been having emotional problems before and so that's why he was there but I think that's definitely a correlation to why he was eliminated.

Now, who are some of the people that have come to these?

Barbara Lamb, who's a psychologist, she would come. And Peter Robbins and John Mack Bud Hopkins and Linda Napolitano or Corteel.

Yeah.

Randy and... Did his sister ever come? Maybe she did once. Because she had had an experience. Yeah. Yeah. She might have come once.

Yeah.

But it was just, you know, I just blocked all the rooms. I had, you know, many bedrooms. I have 12 bedrooms. And so I blocked them all. And they would come and we would just talk about everything back in those days. But... At a certain age, I'm 92 now, you don't care what people say about you. So it didn't make any difference to me that neighbors might be snickering because this was happening, happening to these people. So, I mean, what they'd gone through and to be able...

I remember Jim Weiner once, he was in the elevator where he worked at MassArt and he overheard someone say, there's Alien Boy. Oh, yeah.

Unfortunately, you hear a lot about that. You know what I mean?

Yeah.

And that's all thanks to the Robertson panel to begin that type of ridicule.

Right, yep. So what do you think about the last few years?

It's fabulous. It's a great relief that they've come out with this. I mean, it's the only thing that our president has done that's a positive thing. And I'm not sure why he did it. But yeah, that's a great relief for all the people.

Yeah, I mean, I think it's a positive thing.

It feels, I've said a number of times over the years, like, oh, we're going to go forward and back and go forward and back.

But it seems like it's different this time.

Yep, I think so.

You know, I mean, but.

There's also talk about possible disinformation getting mixed in. And I'll just say a quick example. in the last release of files there was a flock of birds you know that they were moving erratically whatever but in formation and you could clearly see it was that some people are suggesting that it the reason it was classified and then released is because of the information on the panel of the.

Video, which was redacted out.

So that could be the only reason why it was released, but in a way, it kind of makes you feel like it wasn't.

An accident they released it.

I hope not, because they're really good at disinformation.

Yeah, they try. They don't want to face the fact that either they are part of the cover-up or they don't want to face the fact that we're not the most intelligent species when, you know, the main activity on this planet is tribal warfare. And so, you know.

And that's why, you know, people like Stan Freeman used to say, you know, that They're not showing themselves to us because.

Of the way we react.

Yeah, and he was a great investigator on this subject. Yeah, I miss him. There was a UFO that went in the water near Maine. I can't remember.

Are you talking about the Shag Harbor up in Minnesota?

Maybe, maybe, yeah, yeah.

Yeah, that was, they have a conference. They canceled it this year because Laurie Wickens passed away. He was the main witness.

Oh.

And in honor of him, they basically canceled it this year, but they have a conference up there I go to.

That's really interesting.

That whole, that situation is really great because that's the first time a government's Navy actually said UFO.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

So that was brave of them to come out and say that because.

Yeah, that's right.

Yeah.

And so all the years that you've been doing this, how have you, you talked about not ridicule, but your neighbor's.

Did you hear whispers and things like that?

I don't care. It doesn't bother me. I mean, I knew these people were real and what happened to them was more important for us to get together than what the neighbors would say. But I think people are now beginning to say, hey, Ann.

There's something to it.

Yeah, that's right.

Now, John Mack, I thought he was wonderful in his.

Great. I've got a picture made with him and also with me with Eric Vondonican. Eric Vondonican opened a lot on the subject.

He sure did.

Yep. Church and lots to begin with. Yep, yep. Yeah, and he was, of course, ridiculed, but no, he was great. I took a cruise a couple of years back, just before he died, from New York to Bermuda, and he was the speaker. Oh, nice. It was very interesting, yep.

Yeah, yeah.

He was such a character. I really enjoyed it. I interviewed him two times, and it was very pleasant.

He was a very fun guy. Yeah, he was our baby. He came out and said it. And then his Giorgio.

Succos, I think. Yeah, they were good friends.

I think he came once to my gatherings.

Oh, he did?

Yeah, I think. Yeah, because he spoke at Bob Brown's conferences in Nevada.

I've heard of Bob Brown.

He did that whole conference, and it was fantastic.

So I think it's pretty amazing that on a whim you decided to go to a conference when someone said.

I think probably in the back of my mind, I remembered what my father had said when I was like 10 or 11. And so, yeah, I just wanted to go. But as I say, I was interested in UFOs, and then people talked about their experiences there. All right. But then I realized they didn't want me up there saying that. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, there's so many cases where that is a situation where I've done a few interviews with someone when they really.

Don't want to talk about it.

Yeah.

They certainly don't want any fame.

Yeah.

And so they'd rather be left alone.

I know of a couple examples that I got the second interview out of one person who really didn't want to talk about it.

He was traumatized. So you were a little.

Girl and then we talk all the way to you're in San Francisco and you're in the travel business.

Anything in between that time?

Not really.

That you can think of? No. Did you pay attention at all to what was happening?

No, I was raising three children and I was... active as a travel agent and, you know, because it, I don't know, I did go, I met Leslie Kane at one of the meetings in, on the peninsula in Hillsborough and then, of course, reconnected with her back here. She was, worked with Bud, but, that's another story.

Yeah, I think she's done a lot of really good for this.

Okay.

You know, myself.

Yeah.

You know, I mean, she, The 2017 article.

In the New York Times.

Yeah. She and Ralph.

So, yeah, that article comes out and all of a sudden people of science think, well, maybe I will look into it.

Yeah.

Because before that, when I would talk with scientists, they would say there's no funding.

No one's going to fund something you can't compete and get an end game to. Yeah. I think that's kind of changed.

It was. Yes, yeah, he's at Harvard. But John was very brave to write that book and come out and say that. He got a lot of criticism for that.

He sure did.

But I know, I've been with John in New York. A group of us were staying there. We were walking, and I know he was walking and talking. He got very absorbed in what he was saying, and he stepped off the car and said, Oh, John, just wait. Oh, wait a minute, John. Because a car was coming. So I'm sure that's what happened. He had just given the lecture on Lawrence, and I'm sure it was just an accident.

Plus he must have been tired from, you know, jet lag and everything else. So, yeah, he just wasn't.

And they have signs there, you know, to stop that from happening. You know, people stepping off the left drive.

I'm not ready for it.

Look left.

Yeah, I don't think there's any conspiracy there.

No, no, I don't either.

So you saw that firsthand.

Yeah, I did. Yeah, yeah. And that was several years before we were just talking. He was a great guy. He was wonderful.

Yeah, yeah, I know.

I think he did a wonderful job interviewing the kids.

At the aerial school.

Oh, yes, he did.

I mean, he got right down to their level, and he didn't plant anything. He just kind of.

That's right, yeah.

How did you feel and, you know, that type of thing. All the right stuff.

Yeah, and the kids just say it.

And that's all documented now.

Yeah, but they put the information in the heads of the children's head.

Yeah, yeah.

And so there's going to be a documentary coming out on him, which I think is great.

Has Karin ever?

Yeah, we went together. Barbara Lamb and I and then Karin and John went over to investigate the crop circles. Oh, wow. What was that like? It was fascinating. John was very convinced. John said, I remember him sitting down in the crowd, no way that this is done by humans. But Karin disagreed with him. But anyway, yeah. And then, yeah, I guess.

Well, I know they've done some testing. There was the ELT. Yes.

Blown out. Yeah.

That there's definitely chemically something changed in those.

Yeah, yeah. Why or how they do it, it's fascinating. I did get a picture of a man in black. Stuart and Julie stayed at, and we had a little tent, so we wanted to spend the night in a crop circle. And so I looked out to see, you know, it was raining, and there was a man in black standing very close to my, just typical, the hat, I've got a picture of him. And he was looking like this.

And then... about a couple of hours later, I wondered if he was still there or if it was raining. So I slowly unzipped, I reached to get my phone, unzipped the flap of my tent. And when I did, he walked away and I got a picture of him walking away. I have no idea what that's about, why he was there, who the men in black are. I have no idea. But that was that one night we spent the night in the crop circle.

That's just amazing to me. And How far away from a road was?

Not close.

So whoever it was had.

Yeah, we were up on the side of the hill.

What on earth do you think they were doing?

I have no idea.

Is that the only crop circle that you ever investigated?

No, no, several. And we'd go over and as soon as the word came there was a crop circle. Everybody would jump in their car and go out and look at it and.

What type of designs, do you remember the type of designs?

Oh, I've got a whole book of them. They're amazing designs. Incredible. And they don't correlate to anything that we can make sense of and say, oh, that's what they were. You know, they just appeared suddenly. Because I know there was a tourist helicopter that would go around the area near Stonehenge and then... All of a sudden, they came.

and it was there and so they appeared very suddenly.

When you were doing these gatherings now I don't need names or anything like that but did you ever hear any stories that were really like incredible that really you can really remember that It was like a wow type story that happened.

Well, the Allagash was fascinating because there were four people. And then Linda would tell about her experiences. And on a side note, Linda and Chuck and Jim and his brother all had ghosts in their house when they were young.

Really?

Yes. When Linda said they used... Her mother said they would come through the walls. And Jim and Jack had Harry the Ghost in their house. So I don't know if there's any correlation or not, but.

Yeah.

Did any other of the people that came here talk about that too?

No.

No? I just thought that was interesting because... I don't know, have any correlation, but....

Now, have you yourself ever had any experience of.

I don't think so. When I was three years old, 1937, I think I had three strange figures in my bedroom. But I asked my older sister, and she said, well, you had a lot of nightmares after that. But it didn't amount to anything, and I don't know. I don't know what that was all about. No one ever talked about anything of this subject, about this subject at that time.

When you've looked at this over the years, is there a particular incident that you think is really, you know, what is your favorite, I.

Have to ask you?

Well, the fact that four of them are involved in the Allagash is of great interest. And Barbara Lamb, you know, she was a good friend, and she claims to have seen an E.T.

Once.

Very impressed with John Mack's interest in the subject. Bud Hopkins, same thing. He interviewed a lot of people. And they say you don't get fame or fortune, you get ridicule. Back in those days.

Right.

We're hoping that'll change.

Yes. And Bud didn't live too... He had a summer place on the Cape.

He did.

Not too far away.

He apparently had a sighting when he was on the Cape.

Hmm. I didn't know that.

Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

And, of course, you talk about Peter Robbins, and they were really close, Peter and Bud.

Yes, Peter worked with Bud on a lot of cases. And then he didn't come for quite a while. And finally he came, and he was, you know, very interested in the subject. He wasn't sure what it was all about. But then after that... Bob Brown had him speak at one of the conferences.

I feel like we're both optimistic about the way things are going. How do you feel about if all of a sudden we actually had, I want to say, proof that there's other life out there and we're being visited? Do you have a feeling of how many, what percentage of the people would actually believe it or disbelieve it no matter what?

It doesn't really matter to me. It happened. The Bible is full of UFO information. Gabriel, Ghost Mary said, I think, I think Jesus probably was a hybrid. He probably could walk on water. He could heal the sick because he comes to Mary who's beyond childbearing years apparently. You're going to have a child. And then he's born. And then the wise men follow a star by night, a cloud by day. That was obviously a UFO, which came and stopped over the stable. So all of that, from being an agnostic, that's all making sense now about what the Bible is referring to. Ezekiel and the wheel, as I said.

It all makes sense.

And you know, there's some in paintings, but But a lot of people have studied this.

Oh, that one of the beam coming down.

Yeah, but that could have been.

There's controversy about whether they really are UFOs or what they were actually painting and paintings at the time.

But it's still fascinating. But anyway, this has been lovely to talk to you.

Very nice meeting you. Thank you for your interest in this subject, which I find fascinating. And I'm glad now it's more open.

Me too.

Yeah.

And thank you for all that you've done for all these people over the years.

Well, you know, I feel.

I think it's important.

Yeah, yeah. I mean, this happened and no one believed him. So at a certain point, I don't care what people say about the group. It happened. I remember Chuck saying, he said, I don't care, but it happened, he said. Yeah. Yeah, I can't take that away. Yeah. Good. I'm glad you're interested. What piqued your interest?

I told you earlier that I worked on Merv Griffin's estate.

Yeah.

So I was in Carmel Valley, California, and a disc came right over me.

Yeah.

It had like a blue plasma around it.

Yeah.

I was freaking out because there was no sound and it was moving.

Yeah, yeah.

And so that's how it started for me. Yeah.

I spent a lot of time there because two of my kids went to UC Santa Cruz, and so they were close by, and we went over to Carmel, Monterey.

Beautiful there.

It is. Yeah, yeah.

Well, thank you.

Thank you.

Okay.

Thank you.
