Wednesday 28 October 2026
Today is Wednesday the 28th of October, the feast of Saints Simon and Jude, in the 30th week of Ordinary Time.
During this prayer, allow yourself simply to be who you are. There is nothing you need to do. Rest, and, if possible, enter into silence. Notice what you are feeling and what you are longing for. Bring it honestly before God.
Jon Guerra with The Porter’s Gate sings, ‘One Friend to Another’.
I walk with Jesus, and he walks with me.
I rest with Jesus, and he rests with me.
I speak to Jesus, and he speaks to me
as one friend to another.
I work with Jesus, and he works with me.
I weep with Jesus, and he weeps with me.
I turn to Jesus, and he turns to me
as one friend to another.
My dearest friend.
I laugh with Jesus, and he laughs with me.
I hide from Jesus, and he knows where I’ll be.
I see my Jesus; his loving eyes see me,
as one friend to another.
Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
Luke -16
Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Imagine Jesus as he leaves the disciples late in the evening and heads up the mountain to pray. We might picture the dark peaks of the mountain against the fading light in the evening sky... the sound of the cicadas... the rising moon and the gentle quietness that falls at the end of day.
Now picture Jesus on the mountain as he settles into prayer, quiet, restful and enfolded in His Father’s presence. Take a moment now to join him under the stars... rest awhile and reflect on either the past day or the day that lies before you.
As you listen to the reading again, reflect on the importance of the choices that lie before Jesus the following day and on his prayerful preparation.
Continue to sit near Jesus... picture daybreak as the sun begins to rise over the Sea of Galilee, and just as Jesus called the disciples to himself, imagine that he calls you to his side. You might want to talk with him about a decision that you need to make, or perhaps about something that is troubling you. Bring this to him now, as one friend with another, savouring these moments together.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
World without end
Amen
