From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from the estate of Anne Elizabeth Lasek for the repose of the soul of Anne Elizabeth.

May her soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. As we prepare ourselves to celebrate this Eucharist, Paul tells us in the letter to the Philippi, be of one mind and in harmony with each other. We pray that during this Eucharist we may have not that same sense, not only here, but all throughout the world.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. O God, whose providence never fails in its design, keep from us, we humbly beseech you, all that might harm us and grant all that works for our good. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy, and every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

It is right for me to think this way about all of you because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

The word of the Lord.

Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. The Lord is gracious and merciful. How great are the works of He provides food for those who feed him He is ever mindful of his cavernet, He has shown his people the power of His works in giving them the heritage of thy nation. How great are the works of the Lord Hallelujah Hallelujah?

My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord. I know them and they follow me.

And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. On one occasion, when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath, they were watching him closely. Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and the Pharisees, is it lawful to cure people on the Sabbath or not?

But they were silent. So Jesus took him and healed him and sent him away. Then Jesus said to them, if one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a Sabbath day? They could not reply to this. The gospel of the Lord. Paul is at present in under house arrest in Rome.

The year is 62, anoini, the year of the Lord. And his thoughts are about the churches that he had established in Ephesus, in Philippi, in Athens, in Corinth. And the letter to the and the people at Philippi were very dear to him. And so he kept on writing little notes here and there. And so we have the letter to the Philippians, just four chapters, but it's a concatenation of different notes and pieces that he had written together.

He starts off, our reading today is just an introduction. He starts off with thanking them. It's the same thing that you and I do when we receive an email, when we receive a snail mail, or a text message. Our first is to say, I thank you for the message that you have sent. The second thing that Paul does is he assures them of his prayers.

Now they knew that he was praying for them and they were praying for him. But it is important to tell people that you are praying for them and you are concerned about them. I do that every time I write a letter to friends, whether they are believers or not, whether they are Catholics or not. You know what?

In all the decades that I've written letters and said I'm praying for you, not once did I get a message saying, don't waste your time praying for me. I don't believe in prayers. Even people who never go to church or never have any sense of prayer, they are very grateful for prayers that are said for them.

And so you have Paul's letter to the Philippians, the introduction, and finally he prays for their intentions. Paul has got three things in his mind when he writes this letters. First, he thanks God for their faith. He tells the people of Philippi, it is not because of your own goodness or your own qualities or because you have merited, but God has been very gracious to you and he thanks God for them.

And he prays for their intentions, just like you and I pray for the intentions in the intentions of the Mass. We pray for people who are sick, basically people who have had cancer, people who are taking care of, people with Alzheimer's or dementia, and things that really take and tax all our health. But he also prays for harmony, a harmony of mind and heart among the people of Philippi.

He knows that they are of different opinions and a different way of practicing their faith. Now, in Philippi, the people are basically of Gentile background. There are a few Jewish Christians, believers with Jewish backgrounds. They never cause any problems. But at every place that he is in, whether it's in Philippi, in Berea, in Athens, and in Thessalonica, there are always a group of very strong believers in the Jewish faith who do not accept Jesus and they will always strive to put objections and barriers to Paul's preaching.

And Paul will tell the believers in Jesus Christ that although you have people who insist that you have to have the Jewish background before you believe, he says it's not very important. All you have to know is that you are embedded in Christ, in Christ, for Christ, and by Christ, and therefore you are blessed.

But what I would suggest to you that if you want to read the letter to the Philippians, the first thing to do is to go to chapter 2, verses 6 to 11, which speaks about the emptying of itself, or in Greek the kenosis. Jesus, though he was equal with God, did not consider this to be an equality, an advantage for himself, but rather he took the form of a slave.

And because of that, every knee in heaven, on earth, and under the earth will bow to the name of Jesus. Now, once you've got that message clearly and that background, the rest of the letter to the Philippians gradually falls into place. One scripture scholar went even bold enough to say that if every Bible in this world, every text in every language was destroyed, but we only had the letter to the Philippians, chapter 2, verses 6 to 11, we could build up the whole of our faith from there.

It is Christ who was obedient to the Father, took the form of a slave, came among us, and worked our salvation. Now, the message from the Philippians and the message from the gospel are two different things altogether today. And so I won't even try to make a link. We find Jesus at a meal with the leader of the Pharisees.

When you come to see it, the evangelists always put Jesus at a meal. It's at a meal that Jesus will continue to preach and give the message of the kingdom of God. The first meal we have, of course, is the Cana, the miracle of the wedding feast at Cana. And at the end of it, we are told, and they began to believe in him.

Then you had Zacchaeus, who wanted to see Jesus so badly that he climbed a tree and Jesus said to him, Zacchaeus, come down, I am going to eat with him. Which was at the consternation of all the people around because how dare Jesus would go and eat with his tax collector. And there was another tax collector, and this was Matthew.

Jesus calls him, Matthew follows him, and Jesus will go and eat with him. But there were also benign situations in which Jesus was very comfortable and relaxing at the meal with Martha and Mary. And there Jesus gave the message: seek what is most important, the one thing that is necessary. And finally, the Last Supper.

The Last Supper, when Jesus gave us the Eucharist and when He said, do this in memory of me, he not only gave us the Eucharist, but He took those twelve apostles and he made them the priests to continue with the tradition. And so it is at the meal now, Jesus heals this man with dropsy. Now, whenever Jesus does a miracle, he takes them apart or he does it in front of everybody to show a message.

Here Jesus simply takes the man, takes him apart, heals him, and sends him away. Because the real message here is not the healing of the man with dropsy, but on how the people would observe the Sabbath. Was it so important to look at small traditions that they had, 150 traditions, you cannot do this, you cannot do that, you're allowed to do this, and you're allowed to travel only so far?

Or is it more important to look after the needs of your brother and sister who is in trouble? And so, as a result of this, Jesus says, I am the Lord even of the Sabbath, which means that the traditions that the scribes and Pharisees had about all the people around did not hold any water. What's more important is to keep your mind, your heart, and your whole being open to the message of God within our midst.

God bless you all. Let us bring our prayers and petitions before the Lord. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention book, we pray to the Lord. As we come to the end of this month of October, the month of the Rosary, we pray that families who gather in prayer may find it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives and continue even after the month of October.

We pray to the Lord. For the sponsors of masses, of the TV masses who continue to give graciously so that people across the world may benefit from this TV mass. We pray to the Lord. For Pope Leo's intention for the month of October, for collaboration between different religious traditions, we pray to the Lord.

Lord, hear our prayer.

We make all these prayers through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. Through the mystery of this wine and water, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humble Himself to share in our humanity.

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we have this wine, we offer you. Fruit of the wine and work of human hands, it will become for us, our spiritual drink. Worship me my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins. Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.

Praise and glory of His name for our good and good of all his holy church.

Trusting in your compassion, O Lord, we come eagerly with our offerings to your sacred altar, that through the purifying action of your grace we may be cleansed by the very mysteries we serve. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

unknown Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

We live on to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew.

And so it is right that all creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hana in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hazana in the highest.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts by sending down your spirit upon them like the dear fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice. Once more giving thanks, he gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.

By your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy, and all those who yearn for you, O Lord. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy.

Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ.

Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.

Amen.

At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we now dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

unknown The power and the glory of yours now and forever.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.

You take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us all to everlasting life.

Amen.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

Turn your ear to me, hear my words. Governed by your Spirit, we pray, O Lord, that those you feed with the body and blood of your Son, that professing you not just in word or in speech, but also in works and in truth, we may merit to enter the kingdom of heaven through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you and with your spirit.

May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of the Lord to love and serve the Lord and one another.

Peace be to God.

Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
