From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Ray Tok Davitz. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributors from three donors. The first is Andrea Ducani-Smetas from Edmonton, Alberta, in memory of her husband, Al Smitas, on the 10th anniversary of his death, and other deceased family members for her special intentions, and in thanksgiving for blessings received.
The second is Kathy from North York, Ontario, in Thanksgiving for family and for her deceased family members. The third is the Canadian Franciscan Order of Friars Minor Conventual, known as the Conventual Franciscans. I'm the vocations director of the Conventual Franciscans and ask that we unite our prayers in this holy sacrifice of the Mass for new vocations in the Spirit of St.
Francis of Assisi. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And with your spirit.
Lord Jesus, you are the true peace and the reconciliation of the world. Lord have mercy. Lord Christ Jesus, you call us to strip away our pride and walk in humble poverty of spirit. Christ have mercy. Lord Jesus, you teach us that it is in pardoning others that we ourselves are pardoned. Lord have mercy.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. And let us pray. Almighty, ever living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
unknown Amen.
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians. Just as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteous, so you see, those who believe are the descendants of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, declared the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, All the Gentiles shall be blessed in you.
For this reason, those who believe are blessed with Abraham who believed. For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, for it is written, Cursed is every one who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of the law. Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for the one who is righteous will live by faith.
But the law does not rest on faith. On the contrary, whoever does the works of the law will live by them. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
The word of the Lord.
He is ever mindful of his car. He has shown his people the power of his bloods in giving them the heritage of the nations. The large will be number his covenant for the prince of this world, and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw to myself as alone.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. After Jesus had cast out a demon, some of the people said, He cast out demons by Beelzebal, the ruler of the demons. Others to test him kept demanding from him a sign from heaven, but he knew what they were thinking, and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself becomes a desert, and house falls on house.
If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out the demons by Beelzebub. Now, if I cast out the demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons, when the kingdom of God has come to you.
When a strong man fully armed guards his castle, his property is safe. But when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his plunder. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but not finding any, it says, I will return to my house from which I came.
When it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first. The gospel of the Lord. Today's gospel reminds us of the need for persistence in prayer. God loves to hear from his children, and he wants us to know that it is from him that comes our daily bread.
But we he expects us to be responsible about asking for those things and doing so with trust, all the while knowing that he knows what's best for us. Saint Francis of Assisi died exactly 800 years ago. He left a legacy of peace and a large religious family of friars, sisters, and lay people. In this great saint, we see a man who started off his life seeking the glory of victory in battle and popularity.
But God intervened, and through his grace and Francis' own will, a change was effected. Just like the friend who comes at midnight in Jesus' parables, God kept knocking on Francis' heart, slowly, slowly turning Francis' natural human inclinations towards the deeper things. God asked Francis, would you rather serve an earthly king or the king of kings, a mere servant or the master?
And so Francis was caught up at that moment in what would be God's dream for him. But God dreams dreams for us that require us to catch up to him and set aside the petty and lesser inclinations of our hearts. What then would be his true destiny, and what really is our heart's deepest desire? Well, it is God who made us.
So let us not forget that. And he knew, God knew the real Francis, beyond the man who wanted to conquer as a knight in shining armor, so that he could capture the most beautiful bride. And in that moment, there was a change. We call it the power of grace or call or vocation. Francis would henceforth choose to conquer hearts.
How would he do this? By embracing Lady Poverty and through it becoming the freest, most joyful man anywhere. And so, did this increase his popularity? Not at first. But slowly, the Lord, as he himself would say, gave him brothers and more and more brothers. And with St. Clair, sisters, who would follow a separate but similar path.
His was a life of rebuilding the church and through outreach to the marginalized. He spread the kingdom. As a conventual Franciscan friar, I have felt that same dream spark to life in me. And of course, in following Jesus according to how he shared it with us in his stories, we are the ones indeed who follow, must follow up with him.
We must be responsible enough to ask the Lord for help and extend that help to others in need. Only in this way will we see God's dream for us fully realized. Francis became a beggar on behalf of beggars. He realized that Jesus was in the poor, his greatest treasure. And so, by embracing his minority, his littleness, Francis found God's greatness, and he chose to never let go.
We can only do this when we ask God and really mean it, if we are good beggars, but persistent, yet docile to his will. God will not only show us where the greatest need is out there, but he will show us where it is within us. And that is the dream I wish to dream. Will you dream it with me and become a Franciscan?
Ask God today if He is still asking something of you that you have yet to discover about yourself. We pray now for all those who are watching this, and we ask the good Lord to bless us. We pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book. We pray to the Lord.
unknown Lord hear our prayer.
Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord.
unknown Lord hear our prayer.
Let us pray that the Lord may call young men to embrace the gospel of St. Francis, the gospel life of Saint Francis, serving Christ with humility, joy, simplicity, and love for the poor. We pray to the Lord.
Lord hear our prayer.
Let us pray that those whom God is calling to become Franciscan friars may have the courage to listen to his voice and the grace to respond generously. Let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray that the Lord may strengthen our Franciscan brothers in their vocation, deepen their love of Christ and His church, and make their lives a joyful witness to the gospel. We pray to the Lord. Heavenly Father, in St. Francis, you gave the Church a faithful disciple of your Son and a witness to gospel joy.
Hear the prayers we offer today. Help us to follow Christ with generous hearts. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord.
For the grace and glory of your name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.
Grant us, Lord, we pray, a sincere respect for your gifts, that through the purifying action of your grace we may be cleansed by the very mysteries we serve through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
Lift the mouth of the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just. Our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For justice through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through Him, with great goodness you formed it anew.
And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise. For through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.
Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks, he sent the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and eat of it.
For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and giving you thanks, he sent the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
For by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the Sacrificial victim, by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son, and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ.
May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, with St. Francis of Assisi, and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world and be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leo, our Pope, our bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people that you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children, scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory, through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin, safe from all distresses.
We await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
Amen.
The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
You take away the sins of the world. You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world.
Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, My soul shall be healed.
Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever.
Amen.
Grant, O Lord, we pray that benefiting from participation in heavenly things, we may be helped by what you give in this present age and prepared for the gifts that are eternal through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
Amen in your spirit.
May Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Go forth. The Mass is ended.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
