Hello, I'm Cardinal Thomas Collins, and I'm pleased to be a contributor to Go in Peace, a spiritual companion to the Daily TV Mass. Through reflections on scripture, prayer, and the wisdom of our Catholic faith, Go in Peace invites us to slow down, deepen our relationship with Christ, and recognize him walking beside us in our daily lives.
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Francis Salesiar. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from our donors. The first is an anonymous donor from Ottawa, Ontario, in support of the Daily TV Mass, for good health and for world peace. The second is Barbara from Toronto and her family in loving memory of their mother, Florence Otto, for their living and deceased family members, extended family and friends, and for the souls in purgatory.
Also for vocations for good health and in thanksgiving for the blessings received. The Telegv Mass Ministry is made possible by the generous contributions of all our donors, and in a special way, our monthly donors. Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love in their daily lives.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you.
And with your Spirit.
As we come to celebrate this Eucharist, we are reminded of God's love and God's care for us. Let us ask God's pardon and mercy for the moments where we fail to experience and express the same love to our brothers and sisters. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Therefore I ask blessed Mary of Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting.
Amen.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Let us pray. Almighty ever living God, increase our faith, hope, and charity, and make us love what you command, so that we may merit what you promise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
Amen.
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians. The Scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed.
Therefore, the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian. For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free. There is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus, and if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. The word of the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, sing praises to him, tell of all his wonderful works, glory in his holy name. Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. The dream is common for seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles and the judgments he dreamed his covenant for spring of his servant Abraham Children of Jacob his chosen.
His judgments are in all the earth. The Lord remembers his covenant forever. Blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. While Jesus was speaking to the people, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and breath and the breast that nursed you. But Jesus said, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. A mother once told her son, I have told you a hundred times to clean your room. The son looked at her and said, Mom, I know. She replied, Knowing is not the problem, doing is the problem. We can smile at that, but there is a deep truth in it. There's a difference between hearing something and living it.
Between knowing what is right and actually allowing it to change our lives. That's exactly what Jesus is reminding us in today's gospel. Jesus is speaking to the crowd, a woman calls out, Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breast at which you nursed. She's expressing admiration for Jesus and in a beautiful way for his mother, Mary.
But Jesus responds, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it. Jesus is not putting Mary down. If you look at it, it is quite the opposite. He's actually telling us what makes Mary truly blessed. Mary is blessed not simply because she gave birth to Jesus, she's blessed because she heard the word of God and allowed that word to shape her life.
The annunciation, Mary heard God's call. She did not understand everything. She certainly did not have all the answers. Yet she trusted God and said yes. That's what Christian disciple is about. We sometimes think that the being a good Christian means knowing many things about our faith. Knowing our prayers, attending Mass, knowing scripture, knowing the teachings of the church.
All of these are important, don't get me wrong. But Jesus reminds us today that faith must go one step further. We must hear the word of God and live it. In the first reading, St. Paul tells the Galatians something equally important. Before Christ, people often understood their relationship with God through the law.
But now through faith in Christ, we have become God's children. Paul says, for all of you are children of God through the faith in Christ Jesus. What does that mean? It means we are not simply people who follow a set of religious rules. We are children of God. Our relationship with God is personal. God does not look at us merely as people who have succeeded or failed in keeping the rules and regulations.
He looks at us as his beloved children. Whether we are successful or failure. Whether we have kept the faith or did not keep the faith, we are children of God. And Paul takes this even further. He says that in Christ there is no longer a Jew or a Greek, slave or free, male or female. We are all one in Christ Jesus.
Think about how radical that was then, and how radical it is right now. Our world is constantly looking for ways to divide people, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, immigrant and not native-born, young and old, successful and unsuccessful. Those who agree with us and those who disagree with us.
But the gospel gives us a different way of seeing one another. Before God, we are first and foremost his children. The person sitting beside you at Mass is not simply a stranger. The person is your brother or sister in Christ. The person who irritates you is also a children of God. The person whose opinions are different from yours is also a child of God.
This is where today's gospel becomes very practical. It's easy to say I believe in God. For sure we do. We all believe in God. But how does that belief affect the way I speak to my family? How does it affect the way I treat someone who disagrees with me? How does it affect the way I speak about another person when they are not present?
Hearing the word of God means allowing God's word to enter our ordinary lives. Sometimes the most difficult place to practice our faith is not here in the church or when you are attending mass. It is at home. It is where when we are tried. It is when we are tired. It is when someone pushed us to the corner.
It is when we feel we have been treated unfairly. It is when we have every reason to be angry. But the gospel asks us to forgive. That is where faith becomes real. Mary gives us the perfect example. She heard God's word, trusted it, and lived it, even when she could not see the whole picture. So, dear brothers and sisters, perhaps today Jesus is asking each of us a simple question.
What am I doing with the word of God that I hear? Every day or every Sunday, we hear scripture, we listen to the gospel. But the question is: does the word of God leave the church with us? Does it come home with us? Does it enter our conversations? Does it change our relationships? The gospel states.
Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it. That is a blessing Jesus offers us today. May we not be Christians who simply hear the word, but become Christians who live the word. May the word of God become visible. Not only in what we say, but in how we live, how we love, and how we forgive, and how we treat one another.
As we celebrate this Eucharist, let's continue pray for that grace. That God may give us the strength, the wisdom, and the knowledge and understanding to appreciate the scripture and to hear the word of God and live by it. Let us bring forth our prayers and petitions. We pray for ourselves for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
That the grace of God come to us and to strengthen us to understand the scripture and give us the courage to live the scripture. We pray to the Lord. We pray for our family members and friends, particularly who have fallen away from faith, that they do not understand the work of God. For whatever reason they have fallen away, we pray for their return.
We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We pray for the sick and suffering and all the people who are in need of prayers, that they may continue to experience the goodness of God. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayers.
For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Let us pray that during this month of rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We take a moment of silence to bring to God our own prayers and petitions. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Heavenly Father, we bring before you all these prayers. You know that we are your children. Even before we ask, you know our needs and you know our longings and you know our anxieties. Can you bless us and give us what we need? We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands.
It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the wine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever. Pray, dear brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father, the Lord of subsacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name.
For a good church. Look, we pray, O Lord, on the offerings we make to your majesty, that whatever is done by us in your service may be directed above all to your glory through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through Him, with great goodness you formed it new. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you.
Therefore, we to extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
Holy holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosana in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hoshana in the highest.
For through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy. And you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the Sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.
For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, giving thanks, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is a chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
For by your cross and resurrection, you have said. Set us free.
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, His wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to His second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will do reconcile us to yourself.
Grant that we who are nourished by the blood and body of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May He make off us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May this sacrifice of our conciliation we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, the order of bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you in your compassion, O merciful Father. Gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory. Through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Through him and with him and in him. O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
unknown Amen.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our delivery and forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom.
The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace.
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not with that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever.
Amen.
Perfect in us what lies within them. That what we now celebrate in science, we may one day possess in truth through Christ our Lord. Lord be with you.
And with your Spirit.
