From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass on this Thanksgiving Day in Canada, a day on which we acknowledge all the gifts with which we have been blessed during this past year. I am Father Vijay Amir Taraj. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from the estate of Helen P.
Center. This Mass is offered in memory of Helen and Murray Center for living and deceased family members and friends, also in thanksgiving for the daily TV Mass and for all other blessings. May their souls and the souls of the faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And with your spirit. Sisters and brothers, as we come to give thanks, we take a moment to seek God's mercy and forgiveness. Lord Jesus, you are the source of life. Lord have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the source of love. Christ have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you are the source of light. Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. God, whose gifts are countless and whose goodness is without limit, teach us we pray, to use wisely the rich blessing of land and sea, to be attentive to the needs of others, and to give as freely as we have received, that we may, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians. Brothers and sisters, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another, and if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other, just as the Lord has forgiven you.
So you must also forgive. Above all, clothe clothe yourself with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your heart to which indeed you were called in the one body and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Teach and admonish one another in all wisdom and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Blessed be the name of the Lord for Praise, O servants of the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord. From this time on and forever. Blessed be the name of the Lord. From the rising of the sun to its heading, the name of the Lord is to be praised. The Lord is high above all nat, and his glory above things.
Blessed be the name of the Lord for me. Come and I will tell what God has done for me.
And with your spirit.
Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake?
If you then who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him? The Gospel of the Lord. And at the conclusion of the sermon, he said, remember, however small the gift, always be grateful to the Lord. And later, when the time came for the collection, an usher used the preacher's hat to take up the love offering from the congregation.
When the hat came back to the preacher, the preacher shook it carefully but heard no sound. Then he turned it upside down, but nothing came out. It was completely empty. Seeing this, every eye in the congregation watched to see if the preacher would practice what he had just preached. The minister raised his hands to heaven and still holding his empty hat, and he said, Thank you, Lord, at least I got my head back.
Sisters and brothers, as we heard in the beginning of this Eucharist, today here in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving. I am confident in most cultures, if not all cultures, have a day or a festival to give thanks, to celebrate the gifts and blessings of God and the many blessings we receive from those around us.
A little more than a month ago, on the first Saturday of September, the first reading was from Saint Paul's letter to the Corinthians chapter 4, where Saint Paul would reprimand the Corinthian community by a simple yet a powerful question. What do you have that you did not receive? Now those words struck with me.
Not only they stuck with me, but also to some extent bother me. Because the honest answer to the question, what do I have that I did not receive is nothing. Everything is a gift, a blessing from God. But the fact is, I take things for granted. Most of us take the blessings for granted. And that unfortunately leads many of us eventually to a sense of entitlement which is growing in our world, whether in family life or in religious life.
It is said that there are two fundamental ways of being and living in our world. One assumes that my life and everything that fills my life is simply what I am more or less entitled to. Another way assumes that my life and all that fills my life is simply a gift from God. That is a very important dialogue of prayer that happens in every Mass we celebrate.
Just before what we call the preface that concludes with a holy holy. The priest prays that the Lord be with the community, the congregation present for the celebration. And the people pray that God will be in a special way with a priest who is ordained to do God's will. And then the priest commands the people of God to lift up their hearts, to lift up their desires, and to lift up their lives to God.
And the people respond, they have in fact lifted them up to the Lord. And then finally, the priest says, Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. And the people respond, It is right and just. And the priest then echoes that sentiment, saying, It is right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God.
To give thanks always and everywhere is the right thing to do. Whether we are perfectly healthy or have health challenges, whether we receive what we ask for or we don't receive what we ask for. Whether we celebrate a baptism or celebrate a funeral of your loved one. In today's first reading, Saint Paul says, be thankful.
And in his first letter to the Thessalonians, Saint Paul would say, In everything, give thanks, for that is the will of God. And in our gospel reading today, our Lord Jesus invites us to ask, to search, and to knock. And so as we come together to give thanks on this Thanksgiving day, let us pray for ourselves and for the entire human family that we may always be blessed with an attitude of gratitude for the blessings of God and for the blessings of others in our lives.
And now we offer to God our prayers and petitions with faith. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives.
We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. On this Thanksgiving day, we pray for all of us that we may develop a heart that is grateful and thankful. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
And for all those who have developed a sense of entitlement, that they may humbly realize that their blessings are a gift from God. We pray to the Lord. And for our personal intentions, and the intentions that we hold deeply in our hearts. Good and gracious God, we lift up all these prayers with faith and we ask you to answer them through Christ our Lord.
May the Lord accept sacrifice at your hands for the praises and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.
From your many gifts, O God, your thankful people offers you bread and wine, praying that by the grace of this sacrifice we may treasure all that you give and share your gifts with others and use them for your glory through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For although you have no need of our praise, yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift, since our praises add nothing to your greatness, but profit is for salvation through Christ.
And so, in company with the choirs of angels, we praise you, and with joy we proclaim.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven thought full of your glory, hostana in the yest, blessed is it who comes in the name of the Lord, host.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, the found of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and he entered willingly into his passion.
He took bread and giving thanks broke it, and he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many.
For the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection. We offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have less worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis our Bishop, and all the clergy and the people you have gathered. Remember also all our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all.
We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
Give us a stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, and graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus Christ, you set your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.
And with your spirit.
Let us offer to one another the sign of peace.
You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world speed.
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord.
I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
Let us pray. O God, who in this Eucharist show us the gracious depths of your love, and grant that we may share with others all that we hold in trust from you and live as a people in true gratitude of heart through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you and with yours here. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Go and announce the gospel of the Lord.
Praise you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
