From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Ernie DeCicha. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Debbie and Keith Hayward from Yorkton, Saskatchewan. This Mass is offered in thanksgiving to God as they celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and in gratitude for the many blessings he has bestowed upon them throughout their wonderful journey together in marriage.
They also remember with much love their deceased family members who share this joyful occasion with them from heaven. Our thanks to Debbie and Keith for the gift of the televising of this Mass to the faithful of Canada, the United States, and around the world. And we wish them a happy 40th anniversary.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. The Lord be with you and with your Spirit.
My dear brothers and sisters, as we gather today to praise and worship God, we take a moment to give thanks to the Lord for loving us always, everywhere, for blessing us in so many ways. And we also ask the Lord for pardon and for peace. Lord Jesus, you raise us to new life. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you forgive us our sins. Christ have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you feed us with your body and blood. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Amen. A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians. My brothers and sisters, for freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Listen, I, Paul, am telling you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law.
You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ. You have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything. The only thing that counts is faith working through love.
The word of the Lord.
Your salvation according to your promise. Do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your ardent hands. Let your loving kindness come to me, all I will keep your law continually forever and ever I shall walk at liberty, for I have sought your prince. Let your loving kindness come to me, oh I find my delight in your commandments because I love them.
It probes the thoughts and motives of our heart.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. So Jesus went in and took his place at the table. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not first wash before dinner. Then the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish. But inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
You fools, did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? So give for alms those things that are within, and see everything will be clean for you. The Gospel of the Lord. Several times in the Gospels, Jesus reminds us that what's inside matters more than what's outside. And he's using this example about the uh washing of the cup and how the Pharisee was being critical because Jesus didn't first wash before dinner.
Now we know the importance of being clean and sanitary, but that's not the point here. He just invited the Son of God into his home. Maybe he didn't recognize him for who he was, but at least he knew that this Jesus from Nazareth was a great preacher and teacher and miracle worker. This was a holy man.
And all he could do was be fixated on the fact that he didn't observe this tradition of washing before sitting down at table. Why didn't he notice the good in Jesus that he had been doing throughout Judea and Galilee? Why didn't he just praise him for being such a great person? Why didn't he just count his blessings for Jesus accepting his invitation to come to his home?
No, he had to be critical and focus on this one little thing. So what was more important? The fact that Jesus was the Son of God or that he didn't wash before sitting down at table. But let's not be too critical of this Pharisee because this is exactly how judgmental we can be at times. We can look at people and say, oh, this one is of a certain race.
And we can be racist. We can look at people and say, oh, that one dresses like a slob. Have we even considered that that person might be a saint? We do it all the time. And basically, we should not judge a book by its cover, eh? Look at the inside. Look at the inside. The good hearts of people. And good hearts can be found in people of different races and languages and nationalities and cultures and lifestyles.
I'm always reminded of how upset some people got years ago at one of my former parishes when this teenage girl showed up to mass. And as was the style, I guess, she had a cutoff t-shirt that made you clearly see her belly button. I don't care to see anybody's belly button, okay? But everybody was being so critical, and I had to say, wait a minute, we got a teenager who actually showed up to Mass on Sunday morning.
Thank God. That young woman chose to come to church and pray. And all people could fix it on was the way she was dressed. We do not judge a book by its cover. Look at the inside. If they had given this girl a chance, they would have seen what a good heart she had. I'm reminded of another story of this young fellow who showed up to an early morning mass and he didn't fit in because everybody was Italian at that particular mass.
And they saw him walking in with a backpack. And I guess there had been some incidences of terrorism in some places, and they were putting all the bombs in the backpack. I walked in for mass, and everybody was sitting in a different part of the church to be a safe distance from this boy. And I said, Father Ernie, I think we got a terrorist in the church.
I said, Really? Let me go see who it is. He was my altar boy from the Sunday evening mass. And he just wanted to make it to Mass because he had to go to work that day. You don't judge a book by its cover. And here they thought he was a terrorist. And he was one of my good altar boys who didn't want to miss Sunday Mass.
How often do we do this? What does it mean to have clean hands? They should have looked at Jesus, these Pharisees, and said, He has clean hands, because clean hands are not gained by soap and water. Remember Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's play, Out, Out, Damn Spot? Yeah, she couldn't get rid of the blood that was on her hands because it was in her heart.
So let's learn that lesson from Jesus Christ in our interactions with people. Let's realize that goodness can be found in all sorts of people, no matter how they dress, no matter how they talk, no matter how they walk, whether or not they observe our particular customs of washing our hands. Look for the good.
Jesus always tried to see the good in others. What a shame that this Pharisee couldn't just see the good in Jesus, who was all good. Come to lead us from darkness into light, from death into life. Let's not be judgmental. Let's not judge a book by its cover. But let's look inside and recognize it's always the good.
Oh, I know the bad can stare us in the face. It's always there, we're not blind. Look for the good. Because that should always outweigh any bad. And now let's offer our prayers to the Lord our God, who always hears us and answers us in our need. As always, we pray for peace in our troubled world. For an end to war and violence, for an end to hatred and division, for peace in all lands, especially in those countries that for years have been undergoing wars.
We pray.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer. Let us pray that during this month of the Rosary, and today, October the 13th, marks the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. Let's pray that families may gather in prayer, finding in it a source of strength, unity, and love for their daily lives.
We pray.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the unity of all Christians, for unity and harmony within all of our parishes, and for the reconciliation of those who have wandered away from the faith. We pray.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For all those who are sick or suffering, whether in body, mind, or spirit, especially for those in hospitals and nursing homes or confined to their own homes, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer. For all our loved ones who have died, may they rest in the peace of Christ. We pray.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we ask you to hear all of our prayers, those we have spoken, and the many more that we hold in the silence of our hearts. And answer us always with your mercy and with your love through Christ our Lord.
For our good and the good of all his holy church.
Look with favor, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts offered here, that celebrating in mystery the passion of your Son, we may honor it with loving devotion. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts.
Lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him, with great goodness you formed it anew.
And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
And you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.
For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it.
For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.
Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself. Grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body, one Spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, and with all the saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
Amen, and now let's all pray together using the words that Jesus our Savior gave us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory of your now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant peace.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you, now and forever. Amen.
Let us pray. Nourished by this sacred gift, O Lord, we give you thanks and beseech your mercy, that by the pouring forth of your spirit, the grace of integrity may endure in those your heavenly power has entered. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
May Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
Thanks be to God.
Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
