In our last mini-adventure, Olivia found a flyer for a scavenger hunt in her library book. It was from 1986, 40 years ago. The clues wouldn't still be there for the lead-on scavenger hunt, would they? They found a clue in the hospital, but this must be the end of the adventure, right? Well, let's join Olivia and Addison for part two in our series Lead On for today's episode called Beyond the Curtain.
Okay, let's look at the clue from the hospital one more time.
Look beyond the platform where student voices are raised.
I mean, it has to be.
Yeah, it has to be the school.
Student voices. That's the school, definitely. But beyond the platform. What's that?
A platform where student voices are raised. Could it be the PA system?
Where announcements are made? That raises voices.
Maybe.
Or.
What else?
Voices are raised. Could that mean raised higher? Maybe the gym stage?
Let's find out. Lead on, Addison.
Let's go.
Hey, Olivia.
I thought you had the day off. You were going to read a book and relax. Hi, Addison. Hi, Miss Holt.
Uh, Joyce. Look at this, Joyce. I found it in my book.
Ah, retro.
It's a scavenger hunt from the 80s. Cute. We found one of the clues. It was still at the hospital. No way.
Yep.
And look at this clue.
A clue?
How fun.
Harold, you're supposed to be cleaning DS's office.
Oh, I'm done. Punishment complete.
Let me see. Oh, yeah. Looks like you did a good job.
Thanks. Now, what's the clue?
Look beyond the platform where student voices are raised.
Maybe the PA system?
Could be. It's right over here.
Discovery Mountain students, classes are canceled.
Harold! Students, classes are not canceled.
Please disregard that last message. Harold?
Harold?
What?
I can't resist the fun of the new PA system. New?
Right, we put this in last year. So, this wasn't here in 1986. No, that's true.
So much for that.
Raised. Hey, what about the stage in the gym?
That's what I thought it might be.
Come on, let's go.
Well, I have to get back to class, but Harold, don't take too long.
I won't.
Beyond.
The curtain is at the sides of the stage. That's beyond, sort of.
These curtains are old.
No, there's nowhere to hide a note anywhere.
Sewn into the hem, maybe?
Mrs.
Olsen, do you have scissors?
No, no, Harold, we're not cutting open the curtain hem. I don't think the creators of the scavenger hunt would have gone to such great lengths.
True. The hospital clue was taped onto the back of a plaque. Yes.
So where could a clue be taped and not discovered for 40 years?
Maybe in the lights above us?
Above is beyond.
Let's see if I can reach... Ah, nope.
Wait, Harold, when you jumped, the whole stage moved.
Yeah, it's just empty underneath. Exactly.
Exactly.
Empty except for the chair storage below the stage.
Below is beyond. Not all clues are front stage. Some are behind the scenes.
Harold, you might be onto something. Roll out the chair rack, carefully.
Oh man, it's dusty in here. I don't think anyone has vacuumed under here in more than 40 years.
But the metal chair rack rolls in and out. It can't be on that. We use that every week.
True.
Maybe it's taped to the bottom of the stage.
Let's see if I can look.
Here, use my phone light.
Thanks. Nope, I don't see anything taped to the bottom of the stage. It really is dusty in here, though.
Harold, are you able to step over the metal rack and get to the very back?
I can try.
Yep.
What do you see?
Dust bunnies and, ew, an old band-aid. Ew.
Harold, maybe you better get out of there.
There's a gum wrapper and, hey, a piece of paper.
Oh, grab it. Carefully.
It's... I'll show you.
Watch your step.
Look.
First dust it off. It might need to be decontaminated.
Let's see. Is it a clue?
Well, what do you know? It is a clue.
And it has some old tape at the top.
They must have taped it to the bottom of the stage, just like we guessed, and it dried up and fell down.
What's the clue?
Okay, here it is. Look where Discovery Business is noticed and posted.
Discovery Business? Like, Discovery Mountain?
Yeah, I think so. Where does the town business happen?
Come on, let's go to- Harold Peabody?
That's enough treasure hunting. Come on back to class now.
Yes, Miss Holt. Hey, I hope you guys find the clue.
Us too. Thanks for your help, Harold.
Keep your eyes open and remember to look past the stage lights for God's plans.
Another clue. The 40-year-old scavenger hunt is becoming a modern day one too. Where do you think that Olivia and Addison should look next? I hope that they take Harold's advice with them. There's a verse in the book of Proverbs. It's part of the wisdom of King Solomon. And it sounds a lot like Harold's advice. It says, it is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. That's Proverbs 25 in verse 2. Let's join Olivia and Addison next time for the next part of their adventure.
