The 1986 scavenger hunt is almost complete. 40 years in the making?

Well, not quite.

Olivia and Addison found the information about the scavenger hunt and the first clue in a library book. Now, with the last clue in hand, they're ready to solve the final clue. Did you miss the first three.

Episodes of this miniseries?

It's okay. Jump back and start with episode one. It's called Hidden Thanks. We'll wait right here for you.

Okay, everyone ready?

Let's join Addison and Olivia for the last clue in today's episode called 101.

Last clue. Let's read it again.

Okay, the last clue. Look for where 100 have sung. Praising the one.

The one with a capital O. So this has to be a place where people sing hymns and praise, right?

Yeah, definitely. The church?

That's the obvious answer, yeah. But where else do people sing praises?

Um, anywhere. Some people sing all the time.

True, but hundreds. So this is a group, like a choir.

It's got to be the Harmony Corner Church. Lead on.

So, where to start?

So, Reader, we can plan for next week, then?

Sure, Jake.

Oh, hey, Olivia and Addison. Giving up on your scavenger.

Hunt, eh?

No.

We're on our last clue.

Wait, what? Yeah, we found all four clues.

What's all this about? Oh, look, Reader.

I signed out this book at the library and this was in it.

Oh, now that looks familiar.

It's a flyer for a scavenger hunt for the youth group in 1986.

Lead on. The Discovery Mountain Youth Department.

Huh.

I remember this.

Reader, you were a youth in 1986? You were a part of the scavenger hunt?

Well, not exactly. I was a young teacher in those days. But I definitely remember this flyer. I must have helped with it.

So maybe you can help us. What does the last clue mean?

Hey, that's cheating sort of, isn't it?

No, it's not a contest, Jake. What's the clue?

Look where 100 have sung, praising the one. Huh.

Now I should know this.

It has to be the church.

I'd agree, but I'm not remembering.

Where 100 have sung? That must be a choir.

Yeah, and the choir sings up front.

It's a great view from up front. Now, what in this area is from 40 years ago?

The church is older than that. Is something hidden in the walls? Like a secret passage?

Ooh, that'd be amazing!

No.

No, this was the last clue. So you're not looking for another clue. You're looking for a conclusion.

A conclusion? Oh, so something the youth department leaders planned so that all the youth came back to the church.

Yes.

I remember.

Oh, good.

What is it?

Um, you'll figure it out. You're a good team. Use your powers of observation.

Reader, you're acting like a teacher.

Well, once a teacher, always a teacher, I'm afraid.

Okay, no, that's fair. Let's study the clue. Where 100 have sung, hmm, it doesn't say a hundred, which is how you might normally say that sentence.

No, 100 is more like an intentional number.

100? You're looking for a hundred of something.

I guess.

100. 100.

Hmm.

But look, it says praising the one.

It could have said praising God or praising our Savior or one of the many names for God.

Oh, you think the one is another number clue?

I mean, maybe. So 101?

That's it, Jake.

101.

That's our number. A hundred and one.

Oh yeah, of course.

I'm brilliant.

So, 101 what?

Use our powers of observation.

Good.

What are there 101 of in the church?

Candles? No. Pews?

Uh, no, not quite.

People?

Not at this moment. Just empty pews. Nothing but hymnals.

Hymnals? Jake, that's it. Right, reader?

Take a look and see.

Hymn 101.

What is it?

Which hymn? He leadeth me.

Oh, the conclusion of the lead-on scavenger hunt.

You got it. It's such a beautiful hymn.

It is.

He leadeth me, O blessed thought, O words with heavenly comfort fraught, Whatever I do, wherever I be, still tis God's hand that leadeth me.

Oh, that fits so well. The scavenger hunt was full of clues showing that God leads us.

Oh, the chorus for this hymn is amazing. I'll sing it for us. He leadeth me.

He leadeth me.

Uh, my dear brother, why doesn't Reeder sing it for us? You know, for old time's sake.

Oh, sure.

Let's see. Putting me on the spot here, a cappella.

He leadeth me, he leadeth me, by his own hand he leadeth me. His faithful follower I would be, for by his hand he leadeth me.

Oh, that's beautiful.

Yes, as I recall, the church was full of youth. We had a lot more kids in town in those days than we do now. We were packed.

And that was the conclusion. What a faith exercise.

Yes, absolutely.

I'm so glad that someone used the flyer and clue number one as a bookmark.

Now, let me see that book.

Oh, yeah. It's about Alaska.

Alaska. Yes. My friend and I were planning a trip to Alaska the summer of 86. We weren't able to go.

Reader, did you put these things in the book?

Well, I might have. I don't recall, but it's very possible.

And you helped us finish the scavenger hunt.

It's inspiring to think of youth filling this church and singing praises all those years ago.

This church has been a place where faith grows for a long time.

It sure has.

We should have a scavenger hunt for our youth group. I'm inspired.

That's a great idea, Jake.

I'll help. Me too.

And maybe in 40 years, someone else will find our clues.

Well, you never know. Faith exercises apparently don't expire.

Never.

Okay, now let's get to work. What should our theme be? Oh, I love the 80s font. We should start there.

The scavenger hunt ended with a grand finale. A hymn about God's leading has inspired Jake to share this faith exercise with a new generation.

What do you think?

Would your youth group enjoy a faith-filled scavenger hunt?

Are you inspired too?

Well, if you are, let God lead.

Lead on.
