Speaking of sequels and speaking of ideas from the merger, there's another one.
We got this. Then we'll be watching.
We're done.
Barbie 2. Dylan, I know you were a massive fan of the first Barbie.
Huge fan.
You're ready for number two. So what happened was, I guess I'll give you a little breakdown of this.
So the past year, when Warner Brothers was by itself, David Zasloff and company kept going to Greta, Ryan Gosling, Noah Baumbach. That's Greta's husband and co-writer. And Margot Robbie, of course, because obviously you need Barbie, right? And they kept going to them being like, hey, we want to do Barbie 2. Let's get this done. And they're like, great.
Here's our price tag. And they kind of kept going back and forth apparently. And they just could never agree on a pricing. It sounds like Margot and company really want a big.
High dollar amount. I can't remember what it was described.
It was like someone said like an astronomical amount she was asking for.
Because obviously a billion dollar movie, huge thing.
And you kind of, as we just mentioned, you would need, just like Lord of the Rings, you need these characters back. So the wrinkle that came into this was in December, the rights that Warner Brothers purchased for Barbie expire. So Mattel would have their, it's up to them if they could go shop it around now. They could say, okay, we're going to get out of here.
We're going to see you.
And apparently it was a big standstill and they were trying to negotiate. It was still not going anywhere. And the idea is, hey, you got to get to December. Either you can say, hey, we're not doing Barbie 2 and that maybe goes elsewhere or like, let's do this. Um, obviously I think it echoes a lot of the Joker situation where very different movie. First one makes a billion, all the stars director wanting way more money, but then you don't know if it's going to be a hit.
I personally think Barbie 2 has a much better shot of being hit than Joker 2, but I digress. But now Warner Brothers Paramount merged. Apparently they're trying to make this a, uh, trying to fast, not fast track. This was not like completed, but they, they have December.
They got to make this thing out.
Well, yeah.
Yeah.
Apparently, it's just the people at Skydance, they have every intention of making this work. So I imagine it's going to go through, but I just want to ask you, because obviously I don't think you'll be there, but where do you see a Barbie 2 now in 2028, 30?
Let me ask you this.
If we hit December or whatever that date is, and then Mattel can kind of pull it away from this and then they can shop it around. Does that impact the Margot Robbie and Greta aspect of it all? Can they still get those people with a new studio? It's kind of a weird area, right?
I think technically what you'd have to do is you can make a Barbie movie, but you'd have to... I don't think you could make the same... You couldn't have direct continuation plot lines. So you'd almost have to make a Barbie 2 and ignore some stuff or just kind of pretend like Barbie's on a new.
Because I don't even know if.
Could Barbie be, because obviously the first one ends with her in the real world, could she be in the real world now in Barbie 2? Or would they say, no, no, no, that's tied to our movie, right? So I'll say that I don't know if they could. I think technically they could make a movie with Ryan, Greta, and Margot, but they'd have to be very careful. It's kind of like back in the day, I can't remember who made it, but Dylan, there's a James Bond with Sean Connery that's not a technically licensed Bond movie. It's called Never Say Never Again. but they found one book that wasn't bought because Bond was a book series. So they did that where Connery was playing Bond in like a semi-unsanctioned Bond movie.
So there is, I think, ways... If they could do that, there's ways around it here with Barbie. Because you just do.
You could just call it Barbie Dreamhouse and Margot's in it and then no one knows any different.
And maybe I'm crazy here. I feel like... I think all you need, need, need, need is Margot. Like, I think you could.
Not even Ryan.
I think you could get away without Ryan.
Whoa.
I'm Ken. Yeah.
I'm Ken. Some people argued he stole that movie from her.
I think you could get a new Ken and there could be good jokes about that and it's like Jacob Elordi and it's fine.
Jacob Elordi about the Wuthering Heights success.
Get that marketing campaign of them having an affair again going on.
I know you asked what Walking Phoenix was up to. Let's get a whole new different Ken. Let's see what he's got going on.
Walking Phoenix. Maybe that's where Tom Cruise needs to go next with his career. He should be a new Ken.
Imagine that.
That would be insane.
Those posters, Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise.
Nothing against Greta, of course, because obviously she had a vision, fucking nailed it, and people loved it. But I think they could go another direction and that could still work and the vision could still be there.
It sounds like the cast is very much like it's all or nothing.
That makes sense. Because, I mean, Margot was pretty involved as a producer and stuff too, right?
It's her company. Lucky Chat produced her company.
Some would call her a ghost writer or a ghost director on Barbie.
I wouldn't call her that.
I don't know.
Maybe she was. Maybe she was. But, you know.
Yeah, I mean, I think that that movie, that sequel, will be huge as well. I could see it, like, actually performing under what the first one did, possibly, because there was a bit of, again, like, the event of that was tied a little bit to the Barbenheimer effective at all. And that became a huge like meme that actually was more than a meme because it became a real thing. Uh, but I, I still think it'll be a huge movie. And even if they increase those price tags at it, yeah, I don't think you'll get a joke or two situation where it just like totally flops the other way. I think you'll have a movie that is still like very financially successful. People will probably still really enjoy it. Uh, if it's like even, you know,
80% as good as, as, as that first one. And yeah, I think you can go a lot of directions with it because it's not like, yeah, it's not like it's an IP where it's based off some specific story that people will know about. It's just you fill in whatever you want to do. So I think that movie will still be... really big, but I think it is crucial to get, uh, yeah, at least Margo, but preferably, yeah, the rest of that main crew.
I agree with you.
If they came to me and said like, Hey, we can only get one of them.
And they are agreeing to this. Yes. You get Margo. That is the one.
I do think it, you still need Dawson. Cause I feel like that was a big deal. I, I guess I'll say this way. I think for it to be a big hit, I think you need the band back together. I think you need a lot of those like Kate McKinnon's and simulator. I'm not saying they're going to get the massive price tag, but I think just that idea of, You could introduce some new Barbies and Kens, like you said, that could be the fun of it, right?
But I think you.
Want a sense of returning back there, and again, I'm in lockstep with you there, where I think it would be a hit.
It wouldn't be as big as the first one, but I think it would still be a hit. Again, you never know.
I was the guy that said they should do Joker. A bunch of people said, Joker 2, don't do it, and I said, oh, for sure. The budget kind of ballooned there, and I didn't know that, but still, even without the budget, that movie ate shit. I just think Barbie 2 is way more commercially accessible. I don't think they'd be like, oh, it's like, because there's portions of Barbie that wasn't musical. So for Joker 2 to become musical, I think there was a lot of people being like, I'm out here.
Like, I don't really want to do that.
You know, where Barbie, it's like, I think that crowd would be fine if it got more song.
Numbers or whatnot.
Right.
I don't think they would revolt.
Like, you'd almost have to do the reverse where Barbie would have to become like a dark drama for people to go like, oh, what are they doing? You know?
I think a big part of it, too, is the timing of it. This should have been well in production already. They should have, if they wanted to. Obviously, there's a lot tied up in that. If Greta wanted to go make Narnia and do other stuff instead. But I think that definitely was the call. And with so many of these things, we'll see what happens with Batman Part 2, if that does eventually come over. That's so long after the first one. That's specifically a story based off the first one. joker was 2019 into 2024 was that the something like that like you have five but again like that's the covid stretch too so it feels like 38 years even though it's only five years and i think brand new.
Day at five years that was mass like still big break but massive success right so.
Yeah that i mean that feels like it's in a bit of a different conversation because it's spider-man but i i do think that barbie is is not going to be subject to that same like the stretch of time torment that some of these other movies goes through. I don't think Barbie will be affected by that, uh, in that same way. I think that even if they take a few years, like I think it'll still be fine.
I don't think it has that. Cause when that came up, that came on 23, three, 23, right? So it's kind of like past that COVID time warp to some extent. I think it'll still be successful. But yeah, they really should have been coming out this year. I mean, they should have kept up with Nolan, you know, and just keep matching up with Nolan.
They should have, yeah. Well, yeah, one, like you said, should have gone to Narnia.
So at some point, it's like, do you just throw Greta to the wind if she's asking too much money or is spending too much time on Narnia and you just get someone else to just pump this thing out?
I think this is in not the success way, but I think this is very much like a Joker situation where I don't get me wrong.
I could be wrong.
I don't think any of these four actually really want to do this movie, but I think they're just.
Like, what price?
They're just setting.
Yeah.
They're like, what's like the level, like fake, fake amount high. We can put it where they'll. Yeah.
Don't get me wrong. I think when they get the money, they're like, okay, we've got to go make something good. And same thing with Todd Phillips. I don't believe he actually went out to go make something bad. I think he just made something that the audience wasn't really wanting, especially myself after Joker 2. I think they'd get the check and go, okay. But that's why I think these amounts, when they say, oh, it's an astronomical amount, I think it's just because as a star, you could say, hey, the last movie made like $ 1. 3 billion. I'm the star of that movie. I should get a little bit more from that. And if you don't give it to me, I'm not going to do it. And they have all the chips.
And I think it's even stronger, too, if all four of them, which that's a rumor, are linked together.
Because it's not like, well, we can't get Mario.
Well, let's just not pay Greta.
If they all four are talking and know what each other is getting in ballparks, like that's when you're screwed especially the husband like the writer and director this movie are husband and wife so you're not getting they know they know what their offers are getting so you know that gretta and margo are friends and i think gosling's probably i think gosling's probably the easiest one to convince i think he's fully in cash the bag mode right now like what He's in Star Wars, and then what's he doing right after?
Ghost Rider.
I think he's just like, hey, whatever you guys want to do as long as it's checked there, I'll be there.
I'm not saying it's bad. Project Hail Mary was great, but I'm just saying I think he's in a different mindset nowadays. Like, sure.
It is really interesting to see how all their careers have gone since then, where, yeah, Gosling had a bomb here and there, but then, yeah, Project Hail Mary was a big deal.
Huge.
People love it. And kind of maybe a different genre, a different kind of character for him. And then, yeah, as you just kind of laid out, he has an interesting... trajectory to his career going on here with jumping into the Disney-verse. And then Margot had a kid, right? She hasn't even really been.
In anything recently.
That was kind of like a return to form, right? I think she's probably just with being a mom and stuff now too, she's probably a lot more selective with the roles she wants to take. So that's probably part of why she sets the price so high. And then Greta hasn't had something since Barbie Ray. She's just been trusting me.
She's been doing Narnia. She's been doing Narnia a while.
Yeah, so very different roads for them, but it'd be cool if they all led back to Barbie Land.
I feel like, what did she, what was she in? Oh, Big Bull Beautiful Journey, that age shit. I liked it, but that age shit, I guess, for Margo. I thought there was something in there, but I was a fan. I defended it. But yeah, I know Greta did Narnia, and that's coming out in February of next year. We were talking about this in the Discord. What's your Where are you on Narnia? Do you have any fandom for Narnia?
Did you watch those movies as a young'un?
I remember loving the first one. I probably watched the first and second. I remember having the game for the first one on GameCube, and I loved that game.
There's a game?
Oh.
Yeah.
I mean, it was just a movie.
I don't care.
Some of those are the best ones, like Pirates of the Caribbean's World, then Harry Potter.
It was probably not a good one, but as a kid, I ate it up. So I loved that first one. And then, yeah, I definitely did not, like, keep up with this series by any means. But there was a certain pocket of time. I would not say it's, like, I wouldn't say I'm nostalgic for it. I have not revisited it since I was a child.
I'll have to bust this out at some point. I wonder how much it goes for, you know?
Yeah, I don't think I have it anymore. I think I sold it, but.
It is looking a little rough here.
Classic GameCube goodness, yeah.
Yeah. Okay. Hey, some movie tie-in games were great, though, you know?
Hey, some of them were. Some of them were.
Yeah.
But it was just that era where every movie got one.
Yeah, let's see. Let's go price and see if we can buy it somewhere.
Oh, dude, this thing's got to be $ 5 to $ 10. Yeah, price turn.
Let's see. You can buy a loose package for $ 6.
Let me see. Do I still own it?
Graded, new. That'd be wild if Dylan still has Narnia. I doubt he does, but that'd be wild. If he does, I would.
I'd say I'd love to pull it out on the stream, but it's like We know that's probably a dog shit game, right? It's probably not good, but I appreciate that it has it because some of them are really good.
Let's go to, let's see. Let's go Wikipedia.
No, I sold it.
That's fine. That's okay.
I just want to see what it was scoring at back in the day for its reviews.
Aggregated Metacritic. You know what?
You probably loved it for a good reason.
A movie tie-in game that's 65 out of 100, that's a great.
Score for a movie tie-in. But the GameCube one was 71 out of 100, so there you go.
Oh, it was. So that's actually a really good score, I think, for a movie tie-in.
Just want to ask you, just because it came up, do you think my take of Narnia being a franchise of the past is a hot take, or do you think it's a just take? The way you're talking about Lord of the Rings, if you don't know this, Narnia, they're doing a big... push with netflix like they're doing it's gonna be theaters everywhere like it's getting a wide release i just don't know part of great is like uh it's even bigger now though than what they agreed upon it's because netflix is starting to next year yeah next year they're gonna start reporting what they make on movies now like money wise so they're gonna they're they're trying to get theatrical because they didn't get warner brothers they're doing it themselves how interesting wow yeah so they're
getting the theatrical game but do you think like because i just look at darn him like I could see this being the equivalent of He-Man or something now where there's people like, eh, this is not for me.
This is not my generation.
You're probably pulling this directly from, I'm guessing your kids don't care at all about Narnia.
No, they've never seen Narnia.
And they should. They're at the age where they should, right?
Yeah, I'll probably show it to them. I'm like everybody else. I liked that first one a lot, but I've just never.
Heard anyone mention Narnia. It's not like they're coming home to me like that.
No.
My friend Jenny told me about Narnia. We got to watch the movie.
Yeah no no one but have you heard anyone talking about narnia non-podcast related i.
Was on a podcast narnia no that does not come up like.
Are people like i just wonder if when they are because there's no preview for this right so let's say it's going to be doomsday time december it's going to come in february everyone's sitting there or even dune and they watch this narnia trailer and then the logo pops up like are people oh my god narnia's beggars like oh Another Narnia.
Okay. Like, I just feel like it's going to be that.
I feel like it's going to be, now Greta is a great director, so maybe she'll pull it off, but I just feel like it's going to be like a lukewarm of like, all right, I guess Narnia is back.
Cool. You know, I feel like to some extent though, like you could have had that reaction to like, oh, they're making a Barbie movie. And then Barbie was huge. And obviously part of that is like, when you see the trailers, you like see what the vision is of it. And so maybe that's what Narnia needs is just like, has there been a trailer for it yet?
No, just images right now.
So there you go. Maybe, maybe when we see it, it'll bring it to life, you know?
Yep. Okay.
Yeah.
I'm trying to think when, when, when did we first, is there a reaction on the podcast of like when Barbie was announced? But before we knew anything about it.
I think we were hyped. I think we liked the idea of like Ryan and Margo. I think we're all like, yeah, that makes sense.
That's good. And I think the trailers were a mix of like people being mad.
But I feel like until we, I feel like we wouldn't have really cared much until like actually saw a trailer, right?
I did because I loved Greta. So I was always on board.
But I think the trailer is what did the whole like Barbie world and the plot line. So yeah, I agree with you. The trailer hooked people in, you know? So maybe Narnia does it again.
I don't know.
We'll see. Yeah, could be. Could be.
Yeah, that first half the year.
When's the last other Narnia thing that, like, came out? Like, is there a new book coming out? Or, like, I don't think there's been a game recently.
That sounds like the title of the worst book in the series.
The last other Narnia. Has it just been dead since, like, 2007? Or, like, what's going on there? Because there was, like, a few of those movies. I mean, they probably came out until, like, 2015 or something, right?
There was three of them. No, not 2015. I don't think. 2010. Was that the first.
One that's been 2002 or something like that?
The first one was, if I can get some years here.
Five. So it was 05, 08, and then 10.
Okay.
Yeah. And then it's just been on ice since then. No new books or anything either? Has there been like a TV show or like an animated anything? No idea.
I'm not in the stratosphere.
Totally iced out since 2010.
The Ice Queen, the White Queen.
You know what? It's going to be like Travis. GTA. That same timeline. It's been the same timeline as GTA.
I don't know if I can put Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe.
People have been getting hyped for 16 years for this thing.
Yeah.
The first one made $ 740, and then it went $ 419 and $ 415. So, a little drop there.
A little drop.
Did you ever know, because Taylor reads the books and knows, did you know Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe is not the first book?
It's like the second or third book?
No.
They just started mid-series.
That's awesome. I love that. That's a great.
Do you? That's a great piece of trivia.
I love that. Oh, cool. I did not know that.
This movie's starting with the first book. It's like The Nephew's Magician or whatever. I think they're just calling it Narnia.
Which is smart. The Nephew's Magician? Yeah, if they called it that, I don't know. Don't call your movie The Nephew's Magician. Come on.
Oh, no. On IMDb, it is listed Narnia the... Oh, sorry. The Magician's Nephew. I had the.
Nephew's... This goes into my dyslexia I have.
Does that title sound better?
Narnia is so fucking goofy. It's so cheesy. That's such a Narnia-ass title. I've never heard that title in my life, but it just screams Narnia.
Did you see Meryl Streep's playing Aslan?
Who the hell is Aslan?
The big lion that Liam Neeson played before.
That's a representation of God.
Yeah, I haven't seen this movie since 2006. Okay. Six or seven.
Yeah. Okay.
I thought I had another question about Narnia, but... Oh, that's what I said. In the first half year, we haven't got... It's so funny.
The two movies I'm most curious about, we have not got the trailers for. I'm so curious about Narnia, and I'm so curious about Zelda. Because in that couple weeks when we talked about it, they didn't release that movie trailer. And it's like, that movie's out in April. I know we'll have it for sure for Avengers and stuff, but the same thing as Narnia... I feel like Zelda is the same thing where that first trailer has to be perfect.
It has to be like, you see this and every generation of Zelda, the magic is captured.
You're like, oh, I got to be in Hyrule Kingdom. I think if that.
Trailer is a 9 to 8 out of 10, I think it has to be 10. But I think if it's an all-time trailer, billion easy. Billion in its sleep, Zelda.
Yeah, I'm very curious about that one as well. We'll see. We'll see what happens there.
Yeah, my biggest worry is it's... we get that trailer and then boom, licensed music. That's my biggest worry is Zelda. If we get licensed music in a Zelda trailer, it's like I'm a god.
It's over. It's not great.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Especially for a series that has such iconic music like that. But so does Mario and they went that way.
Yeah. Not on the trailers. They saved it for the movie. If they're going to do that, save it for the movie.
I feel like that would totally work less with Zelda than it does Mario, though. We'll see what happens.
Anything else before we end this episode, Dylan? Anything else on your mind?
No. Nothing else on my mind. This was a fun ep. Catching up on movies. I loved it.
Hyrule Kingdom. here we come. Yeah. You know what? I'm still mad. It's not in the fucking bed. Thank goodness for us.
And some people are remembering that, but still mad that lion's not in the movie, but, uh, no, it's a good episode. Thanks to you, to the patrons for asking questions. It gives a whole topic there. And then, uh, yeah, be back on Thursday. I know there's like a Marvel New York comic con panel.
So we'll probably talk about that. Um, it's a TV panel.
So we'll see what they have to say, but I think we're getting new details on Spider-Man, uh, neighborhood. And then we'll probably do some vision quest predictions and whatever else, uh, Ends up on the menu, you know?
Sweet. So we'll see you then. Until then, we'll be boring. We love you all.
Bye-bye.
