Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to your edition, weekly edition of Weekly Geek. I'm the Clown Prince of Podcasts, Travis Snell, and I'm joined by.
Hey, my name's Dylan Moss.
I feel like it's been a minute since I've done a Weekly Geek.
I was thinking that too. It's been months, I would wager.
Yeah, because I feel like there's one where either you couldn't do it and I couldn't do it, and then I rearranged it, and then it just kept getting kicked down the can, because people don't know Weekly Geek because we did that episode where we had our team designate names, and I tried, I wouldn't... I get through a run and then I, on the calendar, put like another run of like the seven teams. So boom, boom, boom, boom.
But then once you started going to different months and people are gone or sick or missing, that's like, okay, try to like figure it out. But like you and Kirk were talking about, uh, on your weekly geek where that sometimes happens where it's like, Oh, nothing for a while. And then boom is happening. Cause I know you and me are going to start, uh, well, you started, I gotta get back in the venture of, uh, we're going to be doing some adventures soon on side quests. Right.
So that'll be fun. And then, uh, Like, a GTA is just around the corner now. It's not like it's a month and a couple, like, a few days. Isn't that nuts?
That, it doesn't, doesn't feel like it.
No. Not at all. So, in a good way or bad way, in a way where it's just, like, you're busy, or do you think it's, like, they're missing out on some, like, marketing getting you hyped?
No, I think it's just, like, the last game in the series came out in 2011, and it's like, oh, yeah, we're finally here, I guess. It just feels kind of unreal, you know?
On Xbox 360 and PS3, right? Yeah. That's nuts. That's crazy. So... yeah look out for that so yeah we'll have some more there and then this week what else we got on Thursday will be a regular episode of GV uh just like a number one hopefully we can get uh you know four or three of us together and talk about whatever but you never know people again sick life happens and then I think that's kind of it I know we got some patrons so we gotta do our res rankings but I think for this week's a bit quieter just because the the storm is.
Kirkland he would tell you that the Harry Potter show is out now and I don't.
Know what he is talking about this man he he's he's got too much going on you know but uh It's kind of calm before the storm because right now... which we're going to punt to Thursday. It's in there, but Dylan's like, hey, I don't know much about Vision. So I'm like, yeah, let's punt to Thursday.
I might actually watch the show, but at this current junction, I don't really know anything about the show.
And that's fine.
I don't even know the tagline premise of the show, which is crazy for how into the MCU and Marvel I am, but then also how just out of it I can be at times. With the shows, I've definitely fallen behind. I'll admit that. I haven't seen Wonder Man. I've never finished Agatha. So, yeah, I'm a little behind.
I don't even think I finished X-Men. I wasn't on that.
Finale, was I? No, no. The last episode I think you did was the Weapon X Facility one.
Maybe I can't remember if I finished that. So the shows, I'm not doing great, but the movies, I'm still there.
And it's not like they're giving you a reason not to do that, right? It's like everything they've told you so far is like, hey, these shows aren't going to be a thing. We'll get shows, sure, but it's not going to be like, here and there. It's not going to be like before it was, right, where, oh, you've got to be connected. So it's not like they're, oh, Dylan, you've really got to catch up because you're missing this.
I think most of the stuff you'll catch up. But I saw, I did not know this until I was watching football this weekend, that it's a two-episode premiere now instead of one episode. I think those, like, short episode is like 46 minutes. That was the number that these ones are long. So, yeah, they are longer. Six or eight episodes. I think it's eight. Yeah, it is eight.
It is eight, yeah. So seven weeks is the double, but... Yeah, so there's stuff going on there. And then what was I going to say? Oh, when I was watching football, the tagline was, because they show a little bit of WandaVision and their history together, the tagline they're using for the show is her vision. So it shows WandaVision, and then it goes his quest. And it gets to where we are today. I kind of liked it. I liked it.
That's pretty good. I like that, yeah. Clever enough. But yeah, we got a lot of stuff to talk about. We got to talk about The Batman production on hold for a little bit. Hopefully we don't know. We'll talk a little bit about that. We got some Warner Brothers merger news because there's already making news. Obviously that merger was pretty much closed last week. So there's already stuff about the new Lord of the Rings movie and Barbie 2.
They're making moves fast today. We're not going over this. They named all their people that are like, here's the new chairman. Here's the new this. And then we got some good Patreon questions. One I hadn't sent you before, Dylan, but I think you'll be able to kind of, you know, On the spot, get it. But we got some good ones.
But Dylan, just simply, how's it going? How's life before we dive deep into this? I know I asked you off air, but just in case the listeners are wondering, how's Dylan Moss on a Monday, 5th, October?
Yeah, I mean, it's a mix of... Well, I had a great weekend. I went to a wedding over the weekend, which was really fun.
Did a lot of dancing.
But I also was around a lot of people, including a couple of sick people. And I think I am now sick. So that's, you know, the pros and cons of, you know, the wedding was really fun, but now I'm paying for it with, with, uh, with a potential cold.
Yeah.
So, you know, that's a thing, but otherwise, no, uh, life is, is going to get really busy right now because, uh, you know, I, I started a new job just to, it was my third week in that job. So still getting into the swing of that. And it's like a more, it's a longer commute than I had before. I'm not work from home hybrid anymore. So, Getting used to just having to work more or spend more time commuting and being at work and things like that. On top of that, of course, still doing podcasts.
And then I'm also.
I don't know if I've mentioned this to you, Travis, but I'm doing a freelance contract thing that I've been doing.
For the last couple of months. Yeah, we talked about that. Yeah.
So that's finishing up in the next couple of weeks. So between all of that stuff, it's just been kind of crazy and busy and whatnot. But yeah, overall, doing pretty well.
Life's good.
Life's busy.
Yeah.
And I'm very excited. I have a good concert this weekend for one of my favorite bands right now.
Oh, that's fun.
The Wolves of Glendale, who are like a comedy, comedy rock. It's hard to even give them the genre because they do music.
Of all types.
Like they just like are so good at parody and parody all the different genres. But I'm so stoked on that band.
Love them so much.
They had a new album come out a couple weeks ago and they're coming to Vancouver. And they're kind of like a small band. So it's like, oh yeah, let me get just $ 25 tickets to.
My favorite band in the world. Hell yeah. That's a pretty good deal.
So I was able to convince some friends to come because the tickets are so cheap. So that's going to be really fun. Looking forward to that.
Nice. Yeah. That's my favorite time when I go to certain wrestling companies and they're really having like a bad run and they're not popular. That's the best time to go. And like, cause the last time we, me and the girls saw WWE was like right before they got really popular again. So, like, after the fact, tickets were, like, super expensive. So I was like, okay, we went at the right time. Because they always ask, oh, are we going to go back? It's like, not anytime soon. Because, like, the AEW stuff is maybe a little bit too older for them. And then WWE is like, it's fine. But it's like the ticket prices were outrageous. And I don't actually watch that much right now. But there is some, like,
I have to. Because one of my friends is really into the scene. They do local wrestling here. It's called Thrash Wrestling Kelowna. And my friends always said, like, he has a ball taking his daughter. So one of these times I've got to just take them back. Because it's obviously still the same glitz and glamour. But. It's fun, and probably even a bit better as far as he'd be closer and small circuit and stuff.
There's another wrestler on the new season of Survivor, by the way. I don't think he's famous. His name is Brady. I don't know what his last name or his character name or anything like that is.
Good for him. I hope he does well. We're all right with the new season. How was the Mega All-Stars season? How did it fare?
The mega all-stars?
Yeah. To be clear, not the Trump mega.
Mega.
Mega. Yeah, yeah. The massive all-star season.
Season 50. It was crazy, right? It was a lot of people in that season. There was a lot of double E-limbs and stuff, so it was a very gimmicky season, I would say, but it was a lot of fun. I mean, there's a lot of people coming back who haven't been on the show in 15 years or 10 years or something like that, and You know, closing out a lot of storylines, I feel like. It was a good mesh of, like, the new era people who have been standouts with, like, those old classics. And, yeah, there's some really memorable moments. So, it was a very fun season from.
Nice.
Well, the last couple episodes, it was kind of, like, predictable what was going to happen. And a lot of the favorites were kind of gone at that point. I'm still happy with the winner and the outcome of it. But, yeah, overall, it was really fun. And this new season, season 51 is kicking it off pretty well. They're calling this new era the Open Era.
Yeah.
And so they finally brought back two tribes instead of three tribes, which they've been doing for like five years. So they're, they're mixing things up in a good way of like bringing back some classic things, removing some things. There's no more gimmicky idols. Like people just find immunity idols again, and they're just normal without all these strings attached or at least so far, it seems like it.
So yeah, this new cast is really good. And yeah, so, so this two, two episodes into this new season, it's been pretty good so far. No, there you go.
That's great. Yeah. One day, one day I'll get back on the board there, but I, I do have to ask you a question because my weekend was good for the most part. I was saying to Dale right now, it's 15 degrees out here in October. I have a sweater. It's super warm that I can just do this. It's like there's a breeze going right now. It's like a warm breeze. I don't know what's going on here. Good vibes. Yeah, so it is good vibes. Last night was not good vibes.
I was on the same patio, and Dale and I had to. Luckily, Taylor did pick me up. I had to be taken to the emergency room for an injury I sustained. Yeah. This happened at the end of our lanterns review. I saw something in my yard, and then I went to black, and now I've looked back at the footage. You see that mask right there? Whoa. Yeah.
So I do have to ask you an awkward question, though, because Dylan did not mention one thing in his story here about the wedding. He did not mention that he was in Kelowna. So I want to see if I can get some sort of timestamp proof on your return to Vancouver. Yes, because Dylan said he was playing Star Fox Adventures. I talked to him.
Do you need receipts?
But that does not guarantee he was in Vancouver last night. So how do I not know? Because I don't think Taylor's live on air with me. So it couldn't have been him. Kirkland, it was Kirkland last time, but Kirkland did just beat me in a match. So I don't know what motivation he would have unless he's just trying to ruin my life again. But Dylan, like, yeah, how could I? Because Dylan was in Kelowna. So I'm just trying to say, like, okay, when did he return home?
Well, yeah, so you do a lanterns review.
Well, it was dark out. 8 p.m. 8 to 9 p.m. Yeah.
Here's the best I can do. Saris texted me because he was at the wedding. He said, he said, have a good drive. And I said, thanks, man. I just made it home. And I was at 2.46 p.m.
That could easily be... That is... If I've ever seen a red herring in a scary movie... And it's blurry. So you can't actually, you can even sit in my yard, but no, not, I believe, you know why? Cause Dylan, he's always been a man that's confronted face on and he's, he's not done as Tom Floyd. Even the one time when we were in the Wolf order, he kidnapped Taylor and put him in his trunk.
If I'm going to attack someone, I'm going to do it without a mask on.
Yes. He, he, he fall on or a farm, putting glasses. So anytime Dylan's done something, it's been upfront. So I, you know, I, I can, I might have to do some GPS tracking. Might have to look into it, but, uh, Yeah, I don't know what's going on. I'm getting too old for this shit. I thought I was going to get it done, manhandled. So the cameras that I have in my yard were taken down, so I don't know what's going on. So I'm going to investigate, but I was fine.
A little bump on the head. They used my baseball bat that was in my very yard, but it's okay. I went there, and I'm going to get down to the ball.
Do you have the baseball bat now next to you? You should have a weapon next to you, because who knows when next you'll be strict.
I do have my Jesus walking stick right here, so I could use that. It has a lot of range. Is it in arm reach? Yeah, I could, like.
You should have it, like, equipped. You should have a... What is it called again? A sheath? You should sheath that up.
Oh, yeah. Like the Assassin's Creed, but yeah. Yeah. I got this during Can Day, but I had to listen to a Jesus speech going on there, so... Oh, okay. Yeah. It's a cool walking stick, but... No, so yeah. Well, I'm going to look into that. I don't know what's going on. Like I said, I'm too old for this stuff.
I thought I could put a lot of things to bed on. Now I get to open up the bandwagon. CK, who are these suspects going on now? This always happens, right? So we'll see what happens. Lots of things going down. And speaking about face-on, I have no problem of telling Delmas. Extra Life is happening November 7th, 9 a.m. PST. Delmas.
I'm coming for that title. And here's the thing. Here's the thing. We didn't first last year. I was one Mario Kart game away from getting to you. I don't even think I'm... You're easily... I used to think about this. I thought about what are the players in the NBA, what do they think when they're playing against Michael Jordan? Like, you just look at these games and go, oh, man, it's over. And that's where you are in gauntlet, man.
You have won that title three times. You've won the most tournaments. And now you're trying to set a record to win a tournament back-to-back. Never been done before, right? But here's the thing. We did not cross paths last year. If this year happens, that's why I'm being straight up. I'm coming right for you because, one, I can't let you have another record. I can't let you have another thing pile on the list. And, two, I very much like that title back. It's been a long time. Kirkland beat me for it, and then it went to you.
I have beat you for that title in the past, but I do have to say this thing that, I, I'm not better than you. I'm not better than a lot of other people that are playing the games, but I think I know you a bit better. Last year when Taylor and Hidalgo did not skip smash, that would not have been me. I would not have played you in smash and they're like, oh, we'll team up. That happened.
What was the other situation? Oh, for Strikers. I saw what you were doing to Kirkland. You were talking about Tenacious D and you're making him laugh just before you play the finals. And I said to him, I'm like, oh, he's like, oh, Kirkland has it. I was like, no, Dylan has it. He's suing Kirkland for the kill. And that's what Dylan does. So, like, I'm not a better game plan than Dylan. I've beaten Dylan, I think, only once.
But I, well, no, I think there's a term in there. I may have done it in a random game. Dylan has, like, the huge winning percentage of me. Things like Rocket League and COD destroyed me in our very first tournament. But I'm saying that I'm going to.
I mean, you know, it comes and goes, okay? Some games, Strikers, you know, I feel pretty confident there.
Smash, of course.
I was playing Star Fox Adventures today. I'm half an hour into this game. I've needed to walk through three times. That's different, though.
You're not getting a lot. When it's game time, the mode turns on.
If you challenged me to a Star Fox Adventures speedrun, you would handily beat me. But what is one game you really want to take me down? What would feel the best to take me down? And something that you feel is, obviously, it would feel great if you beat me in Smash, but something that feels realistic, like a good goal for you. What do you really want to conquer me with?
Yeah, I think the two things. One, I would love to re-go back to it. And I don't know if I want this in a round, but I'd love to see us play COD again. Because when I played you in COD, I had not touched COD in, I don't know, half a decade. I was done with COD in the high school era. I think I got to Modern Warfare 2 and I scratched the disc and then I called it.
I was like, I don't need to play this game anymore because it was broken. And I don't even think I could guarantee you, I'm not like, oh, I'd get you, but I'd like to see it.
That would be good, because obviously you haven't really been playing Warzone recently, but you are a lot more practiced than me in recent times.
And I know what a loadout is. I knew what it was, but I didn't even know what gun should I pick, what idea, what does this perk do? I was just like, okay, let's do this. I had given up before. And then I do want strikers, because we played two striker games this summer here. One you creamed me in, but one you only beat me by one point.
I was mad about the other one. I know Dylan's not going to let it go when I talk about the controller, but I do want one of those back. But no, don't beat me fair and square, because I should have been able to beat him, but I was mad about my performance in that second round there. I got a really... When I was playing with the girls, I've been working on a new strategy with the supercharge, because I feel like that was my most ineffective thing, because if you look at those stats, I think the most supercharges, but me popping them off was not that...
percentage was lower. So those would be the two. Off-sea, I've got to get to the finals in a random round. Who knows? I just know I'm saving my skip for you. If I get to you, that's what I'm saving it for because I cannot pull a smash. I cannot pull even rock and lead.
You can save a skip for me, but there's another guy who's got two skips.
I know. You can skip whatever. Yeah, I know. But I'm just telling you, it's coming. Extra Life Tournament. I'm very excited to see what's going to happen. We've got us four. I'm going to start announcing people soon. We've got some returners. We might have some person that's never even entered a tournament before. You never know. That's good tease.
I like that. We'll see. But what we're going to see about now is when the Batman 2 is going to come out. We're going to tell more plugs later, but we'll get into that. This isn't like a big story because there's not much to it, but I thought I had to address it, and Matty did send a Patreon question, so I thought, okay, throw it in here.
So I want to pull up the article just so I don't– What are you laughing about? What are you laughing about?
What I'm laughing about is that... Well, maybe read your article first.
And then I'll... Yes, I was going to say that should be... Set the scene first. Yes, I can preference this with... Because I want to get the full on thing. So the title of this... So this came out at 10 a.m. today. The Batman Part 2 production pauses Matt Reeves' steps away for personal reasons. The studio on Monday released a statement on the matter production. The Batman has temporarily paused as Matt Reeves focuses on family matters. Matt has full support of DC Studios. We look forward to continuing his journey. Now, if you recall, we talked about this a little bit where months ago or sometime last year, that was one of the reasons why the production was delayed that time because he was dealing with stuff. No
one's ever said anything. And this is why in the title of the podcast, I did not put Matt Rees in there. I did not try to make him clickbait anything because I've seen it. like I'm not trying, like I'm going to talk and say this and not trying to make this like a flashy thing. It just is what it is. There was somebody that was in the know that did compare to like a Chadwick Boseman situation, but they deleted that tweet. That was last year. They deleted the tweet when it came down and caught fire.
So it could be two things as far as maybe they misspoke or maybe it is something that we don't know if it's something to do with him or a family member. And that's where for me, it's, it is going to be interesting if this movie does ever come out that like what these reasons could be or what's happening because I think now we've seen that it's, it's more than just, uh, like the last time was just what I'm trying to get at Dylan. It was just like hubbub. It was people saying, Oh, I might've heard something.
This is them actually putting out a statement saying like, Hey, we're stopping production right now. So all I guess I'm hoping for is that whether it's him or his family, that it's all good. Cause at the end of the day, like even if I don't ever get a Batman two, that's okay. I'd rather this guy like be okay and have okay time with his wife. But, I think it's just, we've talked about it last year, so it's so much of this big stuff, we never know what's going on, and that's the thing where, so it's halted, and that's, but it seems like it's not like a, oh, this script or this, it's just, hey, this guy's away for a reason, but again, this is the second time it's happened, so that's the, obviously the concerning thing for fans, and
I think the good fans aren't even concerned about the movie, just for like, oh man, I hope everything's cool with this guy, but it's just been a bunch of, it's been a long time, so obviously it's just always a like, man, what else can happen with this movie, you know, so.
Yeah, I mean, obviously, that's the most important thing is that the man himself and everyone else around is, you know, doing what they need to do to make sure they are healthy and safe and all that stuff. What I was talking about is I feel like a few, it was not that long ago, we were having a conversation about this on the podcast, and I feel like it was you specifically against me talking about, like, oh, this date is solid.
This movie's coming out. It's not getting delayed again.
And I'm like, no, this movie's fictional. This movie does not exist. It's possibly going to get pushed again.
They've been filming. They're set photos.
No, everything was looking good at the time. But it's just funny that I... Because I think you were talking to me about... I was sharing that my hype level for this movie has completely died off just because it's taken so long. And you're like, well, it's finally coming out. It's coming out in just a few months. And yeah, now that's not going to happen anymore. And it's like, yeah, just more and more my my interest in it is just it's already waned so much Bruce waned so much and now it's going to Bruce wane even more which is obviously disappointing but yeah I don't know this movie I hope for obviously there's for me I don't have a lot of skin in the game this movie doesn't come out it doesn't really affect me that much because
I'm not a huge Batman guy even though I do like the first one But yeah, I feel for the people like the Maddies of the world and you who are big Batman fans who obviously this would mean a lot for you, this movie. And so I hope it does eventually come out. And hopefully it's not just like some weird choppy mess and you can see that it is a movie that got delayed and held these production issues or it was like, oh, this guy's haircut looks different scene to scene because they filmed this two years apart.
Hopefully those things don't squeak through into the final product and it's still a good movie when it finally does come out. But also it's so dicey with that ownership and leadership of I don't know. At some point, like, do you just cut your losses because this movie is becoming so expensive to make and maintain at this point?
Yeah, I guess because, yeah, Taylor asked me about that, and that's always the thing, too, of, like, because we were just talking about Sendero's, and that's where it's interesting of the money when it goes into it. Because we see this all the time with video games, too. It's like, sometimes they just drop the game where it's like, hey, we spent so much on it, we have to do it.
And that's why I wonder with the money, is it ever like, oh, it's still worth it to put it out because, like, we have spent so much, or is it like, ah, we're going to stop this? And hopefully this is just like a I guess the– because I'm not going to speculate here. That's the only thing I'm going to say. The only thing that makes me worried is I feel like sometimes when they put stuff out in the press, like a press release like that, that's where it's like they almost want to get ahead of bad news. And I hope that's not what it is.
I hope it's literally just they're filming. This is going to get out. Even if it's a couple weeks, this is going to get out. That would stop production. Everyone's going to freak out. Let's just say, hey, it's a family thing. It's all planned. It's all good. That's my hope. It's just we've seen that before where things happen. And then a bigger thing drops, right? So I hope for everybody involved, that's not it. And it's just, yeah, it's interesting.
I don't know what's going to happen in the long run here. I think it will happen. But as I've always said, I'm just kind of fine for if we only get part two. Like, I in no way think, like, I'm in no way dreaming of a part three. But again, that stuff where whatever these health issues could be, that maybe that's why it has taken as long, right? And Matty asked a patient a question. He asked, I just want to word it correctly. I think he asked, what's a 1 out of 10? Oh, hang on. I got my wrong email up here. Hang on. I got the key first one. Where is it here? On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely do you think it is that Batman gets delayed again? So, Dylan, they don't delay the movie. It's still the first week of February.
And they did state that there's no delay as of right now, that everything is still all good. Obviously, we don't know what these issues are, so you can't really control that.
I mean, is this like a... Are these reshoots that they're doing right now?
Or is this like just... No, they're shooting the movie. They're supposed to shoot the movie six months.
And you're telling me it's coming out in February. A movie that has all the special effects.
28. Oh, 28, 28. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
See, I can't even keep track anymore.
Yes. It was actually supposed to be out last Friday. The second release date was last Friday. Yeah, it sure was. It's tricky.
It's like, especially with Patterson as your lead, it just feels he's like the busiest man in Hollywood right now. So if you have a delay like this, He's probably got like various other projects lined up that he's just waiting to film. And so then it becomes a huge issue of like scheduling of like when is the next time you can get your guy who's probably in 80 percent of the scenes in the movie back to the set.
And then like all the other actors, too, of course, I'm sure they're bringing in a bunch of new big actors as a bunch of people in the first one, too. So I don't know any delay like this. There's just so many logistics that go into actually making it.
All happen.
So I, I don't know. I guess I would, without knowing much more about this Matt Reeves thing, maybe, maybe it's the one tiny little thing and he's back next week and it was just a small little delay, but I, I guess.
I'll, I'll go high.
I'll go high and I'll say nine out of 10 chance that it gets delayed again.
Yeah. I can't say you're, you're, you're wrong with those odds and man, it does get delayed again. If we, if it gets delayed again and we eventually do get that movie, I'm talking to the Maddie's world. It will feel good when we find it. I feel like this movie is becoming the equivalent of GTA 6. GTA wasn't getting delayed, but it was just that, like, it's gotta be ready now, right? Like, it's gotta be ready. So I feel like it could be the equivalent of that, like, oh, here we are. I'm gonna put a five on it.
I'll explain in a second. I did want to say that last week, Robert Pattinson said that's why he started a production company is because he waited around for two years and they weren't ready to go on this. So he started a production company so he could start acting and kind of dictate the roles and where he would go.
So he kind of go, oh, I got time for that, time for that. So it did It did spawn that for your conversation of like, oh, you know, like blocking him off and everything.
Maybe that helps that he's kind of built up this infrastructure almost.
Yeah, because he might have something smaller where it's like, hey, could we shoot this in like two to three months if something goes wrong? Like, yeah, absolutely.
And as he grows and stardom, he kind of gets more sway and be able to like shift schedules around. People want to delay a movie for him or things like that. And you have to imagine this is like near the top of his priority list.
I mean, obviously, getting... cast.
As batman is not an easy feat and uh no and he really wants this movie to happen i'm sure he's got a lot of skin in the game.
Yeah and batman was he was notorious for he told his agent that like you got to make this happen like when he found their auditioning he like.
So i don't think he's ever you know not gonna do it that's not that's the case i'm making um but yeah maybe that would help the ease ease the tension of a delay is because it's like a huge priority for him but again there's There's a lot of other people involved in this, not even just on-camera people, but maybe the cinematographer has to go find other work and then delays everything else.
Happens all the time, right? Because this is what I wanted to see, because something I haven't seen yet, I still very much want to, but Primetime, his newest movie, that only took two months to film. So that's where it's like, if he has a production company and he kind of has a list of things that they could go into, that's where it's like, if they go, oh yeah, this will be gone for a little bit, you could go shoot another Primetime-equivalent movie that's not going to be super long. But, like, people tell me it's really good and everything, so it's like, oh, you could easily do that, right?
How long would a Batman shoot be?
They said over six months. Holy shit. For this newest one, yeah.
That's insane. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Those big movies, they take time. That's why a lot of people don't like the blockbusters, right? Because they can be away from their families and stuff like that, so... Um, the, the reason I'm going to say five Maddie is because I remember when they're like, they had that date of, it was November. It was like October. No. Yeah. It was October of 27. So next, next, like a year from now. And then it was quiet for a while.
And they were starting to screen test and shoot and do all this stuff. And it was like, almost like what you're talking about. Dan's like, Oh, it looks like they're on track. And then just randomly they delayed it to 2028. And they listed the reason as far as they wanted the JJ Abrams movie to have like the fall.
And I was like, that didn't make sense to me. Like, I love JJ, but like, I don't think his stock is warranting that. Like if you're a studio and you're like, you got Matt Reeves, Batman that in COVID made almost 800 million and you got JJ Abrams coming off rise Skywalker. Like what are you going to take priority over? And that's where I'm wondering whatever the hell situation is, if it's something that they were dealing with last year and they thought it could happen again, I wonder if they preemptively did this where they went, Hey, during production, I might just need some time at certain points, right? So that's where I'm going to go five, Matty, because I think that's why it might not get delayed again. It's
because they almost preemptively like, hey, let's just delay it now. Let's just kick it so we don't even have to worry about it, right? We do that with cast all the times where it's like, if we look at schedule, we go, you know what? Let's try and do it on this date or let's just do it here because we know we'll all be together. They could have, and I imagine these people running billion dollar companies, I would hope would think that way of, hey, there might be a time where Matt Reese has to step away for a month or a few weeks. Let's just give the more space to have that not be like oh man we're so far behind again right so that's what i'm hoping for honestly again what i'm hoping for is that
everyone's okay because man you know life's short like that's been a big theme in my life recently with uh media and personal stuff so it's just like i that that's what i hope above all else because at the end of the day even if i don't get to it's like hey i got this great movie raw passes batman that that's right the only thing i wanted to say when you're talking about how they look and stuff it's so funny that this movie's supposed to pick up like a few months after the batman luckily raw pass and He doesn't look like a guy that really ages.
I don't think it's going to be like, oh my God, but it is kind of funny where I wonder if they do get to a part three and that's still supposed to be like, oh, this is only a few weeks after. It's like, he's looking like a decade year older, you know?
Yeah, you only really notice that if you watch them back to back, I guess, at home, streaming, a little binge.
Which a sicko like me is going to do at some point. But you know, that's everything for right now. So we'll see what's going to happen next. Uh, let's talk about this. So I'm going to throw some patron questions here. Uh, Mike has one and then the clay had one, but kind of dovetails into Mike, but, we'll do this till we get some other questions. If you want to join or if you want to, we'd appreciate it.
But if you join patron, you can send question in advance or big topics like this. And we appreciate them all. We very much. Uh, thank you. Everyone that's listening, everyone supporting us there. Uh, we couldn't do this without you. We'll talk more about that later, but Mike G super bad. Mike says, so the, and I'm not sure if you've been following up with us, Dylan, I guess I will update you on, uh, Have you been seeing anything about this Digger stuff?
I mean, just after I saw this in our notes, I had a little Googling of it. But I'd love if you'd fill me in because I'm sure the audience would appreciate that too.
So the movie cost about $ 160 to $ 180 million. And obviously, you know, and you read to big director, big cast. You got Tom Cruise. At one point, it was projected to get around $ 20 to $ 25 million. um i think due to reviews and a lot of other stuff it only finished with about eight million this weekend and it's going to be one of the biggest bombs of all time it's the biggest bomb in tom cruise's career it's the worst opening in tom cruise's career it's i think one of if not the worst like scored uh fan wise of his career so a lot of bad stuff going on this movie and warner well the previous warner brothers now they're just skydance still and i guess warner brothers is still there, but that's the company. It's Skydance altogether.
You did a, Travis told you, review of this movie, right?
I did, yes. So everyone should go listen to that as well. Yes, thank you. It's actually doing quite well. And yeah, it's polarized stuff. I gave it a four. April gave it a five. Maddie gave it a two. I felt really bad. Because Matty DM'd me. Sorry, a four out of... Five, sorry. Oh, okay.
Sorry, I gave the letter back. I thought this was a failing grade thing for you.
No, but I felt bad. Matty, if you're listening, I felt bad because he personally messaged me like, oh, what about Digger? Should I see this? He asked me two questions, Dylan. He said, is it dog shit? And his crews give a great performance. I said, well, to me, I don't think it's dog shit. There's like a twist in the movie, Dylan, that it is like you either love or hate it.
You're either in or out. You actually... might enjoy the twist. And even someone, I was saying this, like Emily, she thought this movie looked awful and had no interest in seeing it. And then after the movie, when I told her twist, she was like, oh, I might actually want to see it now. Where Maddie on the other side, I think he enjoyed some of it, but obviously the two out of five didn't save him. So I felt bad, Maddie.
So if I haven't apologized enough, I do apologize for that.
By the way, who has this on their draft?
I feel like this was you.
Didn't you have this on your draft?
No, I don't think so. I hope not. Huh. Maybe I had it. You want to fact check that? Yeah, well, I'll read Mike's question while you fact check that. But yeah, so Mike asked, so the epic box office disaster of Digger had me wondering about the often said line, why don't they make original movies anymore? Is it just a vap excuse made by hypocrites?
This is on my fucking list.
Is it on your list?
My list, I have Mando, Grogu, I got Digger.
I didn't know someone picked, I see why, because Tom Cruise, but. Oh, no.
The only good movies I have on my list are Mario and Odyssey, my number one and two. Everything else is just biting it.
Do you got anything else still coming out yet?
I got Wuthering Heights. That did fine. Social Reckoning, that's.
Probably going to bomb. I think it's going to bomb, yeah. Free Fire, that's going to bomb. No, that might be okay.
That'll be a billion dollar movie.
That could be a big hit for you.
Dog Stars probably came out and probably ate it, right?
It did, yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. I'm going to say maybe made like Under $ 25 million? Let me search it up here. Doug stars in the movie. He took a lot of jumps. It made $ 39 million, so I was wrong. It made more than $ 25. So there you go. But anyway, so Mike was asking, why don't they make original movies anymore? Is that just a vapid excuse for...
made by hypocrites who really don't actually want to go to the theaters to see something new. I know I can be guilty of that. I suspect you might be too. Don't put that on me, Mike. Don't put that on me. Can we still really blame studios for pumping out sequels, remakes, adaptions for what seems more often that people just don't give...
people gravitate towards? My God. We could not... Oh, we could point to Obsession as proof against it, but that seems to be a major exception to the rule. or proof that the horror genre is just uniquely immune to this. Those are a few thoughts. Hope I can stir up a good conversation. So yeah, what do you think, Dylan?
Because obviously, and I have some other things to pull up for stats that I haven't looked at them. I wanted to see the past since COVID, what the top 10 has looked like. But I imagine when we look at that, it's probably just a lot of remakes, sequels, IP stuff. So you have something like Obsession. That was huge.
You have Odyssey, which is based on something. But still, I'd consider that a victory almost in the realm of something little different but um yeah what do you think about obviously digger i'm sorry that's on your draft but i mean like uh for mike's question of do you think that's why audience are just like yeah like why should we make this stuff when we go make this which digger is i don't know if you'll ever see it but it is a very very unique movie very unique vision like i said has a big twist it's like okay they're doing something different but clearly you have tom cruise massive movie star people still go ah i don't want to give this a shot you know.
Yeah i was looking at the box office stuff for this year. So yeah, obsessions at 10 back rooms at 11. I don't know if we're counting that as like, that is an adaptation, I guess, technically.
It is, but I, I can't, I, I, I still put in the original IP cause like, it's not built off 20 years or like 30 years of like sequels and movies. Right.
So then 12 is hoppers, which is, you know, a new, new Pixar. Uh, but even then though, that's like, you know, pretty sharp drop off there in terms of like that compared to like the billion dollar movies. Not that that necessarily is what we're looking at in terms of success. Cause obviously obsession, uh, Half a billion, but still a huge success, obviously. A big part of that is, like, the budget of the movie versus the actual box office run.
Did you start at nine because, like, or did you start Obsession because op is all IP stuff then? That's, yeah.
Because you got Project Hail Mary again, but that's at seven. But that's a book adaptation.
Michael, I don't know if you want to call it that. No, that doesn't count.
I mean, the Odyssey, again, but adaptation. Odyssey is a weird one to me, though, where, yeah, it is an adaptation, but it does feel, like, kind of fresh and new, in a sense.
The only reason I put it in the original category is because I do think that has a lot to do with Nolan, because I think if Nolan's not directing that, that's not making that nowhere near that much.
Yeah, he's definitely got his own gravitational pull to him.
Yeah, and I think there's other stuff, too. Like, when I say, like, oh, He-Man's dead, if they announce, hey, Nolan's doing He-Man, I'd go, okay, maybe this has a shot, right? So.
And then honestly, when I look at the list, like the only other kind of big notable ones, none of them are really North American based things. So it's maybe harder for us to comment on the success of those and like how those come to be. They're like, this movie was huge in India, this was huge in China, things like that. Which are, of course, valid, but kind of just different than I think what the question is going for here.
I don't know.
I mean, I feel like I... Don't know if I've ever heard anyone make that comment in real life. Like, they don't make original movies anymore.
Have you ever heard the, they don't make them like they used to in real life?
Yeah, I mean, people, yeah, people say that, but I don't know if that's, I don't know if that's what, I don't know if those are the same.
No, no, no, no, they're not the same. I was just curious if you're not. They're not loose off the same tree. Because I feel like I've heard that one more from like the older crowd. Like, ah, they just don't make movies like they used to, which I think I've said, but yeah, the original, I think the original movies for me is more like, the film fan and the people that would be listening to this podcast maybe have said that or know people that have said that, you know? Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, it's obviously a really interesting issue in terms of, you know, studios going, putting all their money behind like known things or things that they think are guaranteed. Obviously, that doesn't always work either. You look at Star Wars this year, which Star Wars is typically a big box office success but was not this year. I mean, it's still number 14 for the year but against, again, versus the budget, it's not what you want to see or definitely a lot less than they anticipated from something like that and i assume that movie had like a massive marketing budget too uh.
I think it did i think it was i mean i had like a super bowl stuff and stuff too yeah.
Imagine cost a lot of money but i don't know it's like interesting like number six is devil's where where's product two which obviously is like not an original thing but it's like what was the sequel to a very original kind of novel concept and that kind of naturally happens too like we're talking about barbie at some point and that first one again it's like an adaptation i guess in a sense but it's like a cool, unique, brand new, cool thing. And then obviously it does well.
And now we're going to get a sequel. And now we look at the sequels like, oh, they don't make anything original anymore. It's like, well, I don't know. We're not far from it at this point. So there is definitely a difference between like, you know, Marvel movies pumping those out every, you know, multiple times a year versus other things that are maybe just kind of getting off the ground running. Like, you know, people loved K-pop demon hunters.
And I think in like five years, we'll have that same, we can make that same case against that where it's like, oh my God, there's like five of these, like all these spinoffs and stuff. And it's like, it kind of takes away from what we liked about it in the first place, possibly. That's just kind of how things go.
But I don't know. I mean, I think, you know, it's so interesting with Obsession and Odyssey in general. I feel like those are the two word-of-mouth movies for me this year when I'm talking to people in the street, when I'm talking to friends and people are.
Like, oh, did you see this?
Did you see that? It's those two movies. Spider-Man is the number one movie of the year. I don't think a single one of my friends or acquaintances or anyone that I've talked to in real life has talked to me about Spider-Man, but Odyssey and Obsession are the ones that stand out to people. Again, Odyssey, as we've just talked about, is kind of in a bit of a gray area there in terms of is it an original, brand-new thing to Mike's question specifically.
But yeah, I don't know.
I guess the way I look at it is I feel like a lot of these new IP riskier, quote unquote, riskier things, it's just a different paradigm now because now that streaming is so taken over, I feel like a lot of that stuff goes to streaming or like Netflix and things like that are putting... budgets behind those kind of things so they have like a different footprint they they have a different impression that they leave on movie goers or maybe not movie goers in this case because that implies going to a theater but movie watchers at home fans things like that and yeah i mean it also just uh the economy right like things are expensive and it's like if you're gonna if you're like someone like you as kids or even if you're just someone
on your own Going to see a movie. When movies have become so much more expensive and it's like gas is expensive to go to the movie theater.
If you want to get snacks, that's more expensive. All these things.
Do you want to put that into the risk of something that you don't know? Or another Marvel movie that you kind of know what you're going to get. You know you're going to have a good enough time. And I think that is a calculus that a lot of people weigh. And that's something like Obsession and Odyssey. like obsession, like grew over time. I mean, I'm sure, I don't know what the opening box office weekend is, but it seemed like it was one of those things that just kept like, it was crazy with that. Again, Nolan has his own gravity. That's hard to quantify. I had a big opening and then it continued.
Obsessions like weekend two and three were bigger than its first weekend. So that was, that's a, that's, that pure word of mouth movie which can't happen but you can't manufacture those right like i know that happened after that and back rooms were lost studios were starting to be like okay let's find some like reddit youtube stuff it's like you could try and hope that you had eclipses again but you can't just, it's like the barbed wire thing, right?
You can't produce that in a factory. It just kind of happens by circumstance, and then you just reap the rewards, you know?
And I think to Mike's point, talking about horror being kind of almost immune to this issue to some extent, I do feel like that partly is because horror movies like, or movies like this, thrillers, horrors, whatever you want to call it, typically have a much lower budget, and so it's like success, to what means success is a lot lower of a number. Obsession, of course, is huge by any standard, regardless of genre. But there's a lot of, like, Smile, I think, is another one that's probably had, like, a very low budget and then, like, did really well.
Yeah. Even Saw movies are like that, right? They make them super cheap. That's why there's 10 and they're trying to reboot it again because they would make them for, like, 20 to 40 million. They'd make, like, 200-something. It's like, hey, on to the next one because why wouldn't you, right? It's just you're constantly just getting that churn of, like, small risk and then high reward, you know? Mm-hmm.
Yeah yeah i don't know when you're talking to people what is your anecdotal uh evidence of this do you do you hear people in the street what's what's your equivalent of that.
I hate it to say but i feel like this those three movies you brought up are the same ones that i hear talk about even my sister in scene obsession she's like oh i feel like i saw it because i just see it on tiktok all the time like it's always on tiktok doing stuff like well you should still watch the whole thing and she's like oh maybe i'm like oh you make me so mad you make me so mad but uh No, those are the three, because I remember it was like two weeks ago, we were doing a work meeting, and yeah, right, it was the end of August, or end of like mid-September, and the lady was like, we're just doing like, what are you doing at the weekend? She's like, I'm going to take my kids to see Spider-Man. It's like, this movie's
been out for like two and some months and whatnot, right? But for them, it's still like, didn't get around to big movies, so I feel like those are the three. I'm trying to think if there's anything else, but I think those are them, and yeah, I don't think in my personal life I get the whole they don't make original movies anymore. I think I get more of like what happened with Jennifer Lawrence or other people. And they go like, this person's in too much or in too much stuff. Like my sister, again, bad take for Mackenzie Snell had that about Zendaya. I'm like, I won't accept this take, but I could see where she's coming from. Like, well, it's this way than this way than this way. I think I hear them people tire on someone, but never
do I really hear that in these circles. Of course I do. Right. But Micah and obviously you haven't listened to maybe every single piece of content that's happened. But I think even when I was doing, Travis told you back in the day when I used to call the show Thought Bubble, shout out to that show, I used to say all the time that people would say that, but when you look at the box office, original movie, it's not like how it was in the 90s and 80s, right?
There'd be the odd IP and then it's filled with it now, right? And I think it's just like what Dylan said, it's people, money, especially now, spending a lot of money, so they're just going with tried and true of, hey, I generally like Spider-Man, I'm going to go there. I generally like Christopher Nolan, I'm going to go there. I generally like Toy Story movies, I'm going to go with that.
Because I think that's something with when people that see a few movies a year and now, especially with the meaning expensive, I don't think there's anything worse for the general audience than going to see a movie for two and a half hours and just hating it. And if that's like your one movie for the four months, like, man, what a waste. And especially to someone like Digger, like that's not going to be the water cooler talk, right?
Where Spider-Man, there's a good shot. Someone else at work is going to see it or your friend's going to see it or whatever. So like that will come up. But like, Tom Cruise's Oscar play is not going to come up. So I think also like Dylan said, they're all on streaming. So I think they're out there and they're on YouTube and everything. I think it's just you do need to appropriately do the budget because that's what you have. You do have to hope for the obsessions.
You can't replicate it, but you got to hope for a K. this thing costs 750 K. And then even if that would have made 10 million, that would have been a massive success story, right? Even that, uh, that Markiplier movie, he could think he caught, I think he spent like 5 million, but it made like 50 million.
That's a massive success for a guy that's on YouTube. He funded it all himself like that. So I mean there, so I think it's always been that way for the, I think since we've been doing the podcast for the IPS and remake, and I don't think it's going to change at any point. And like you said, Mike, why should it change? It's the same way as like, like we talk about with all the physical disc and gaming stuff, right?
When they have these stats and like how many people play on physical, why would the companies like, oh, we're going to, sorry, we're going to go back to putting them on discs. I want people to have discs, but why would that when it's like a, such a small, like under, like I can't remember the big, I think it was Requiem recently when it came out, like the amount of physical sales. It was like, it was crazy.
Like it was, it was like, I think the single digit. So it's like, yeah, why, why would PlayStation do that? Cause it's people like me that's bought physical or even just like, As much as we talked about it, I hate when you have Marvel's Wolverine comes out, right? And in a few days, that outsells Death Stranding, too. And that's when you go to PlayStation, Kojima, and you go, well, if they're just looking for money, I'm not talking about what I want, but for money, how do they justify giving Kojima all this money when it's like, well, Insomnia put out a game that most people think is just a fine superhero game that defeated Death Stranding's lifetime sales.
in like one week like less than so that's where it's just like it is and for these companies too it is tough I'm not trying to like oh you know look out for the billionaires I'm just saying it's tough as far as look at Warner Brothers in the amount of time we've been doing this podcast this is the second time they've been bought that's because of obviously bad decisions but also just like some bad luck too so it's like they can't always blow just blow money and we think oh these multi-billion dollar corporations eventually catches up and that's where they do have to be smart and think okay what do we do here what do we pick and I think that's what I hope for is the smaller budgets. And for Mike, your point on
horror films, I think the reason why they're a bit more immune is because I feel like that's still the franchise that you want to go see with friends or multiple people. You know, like I feel like that's a franchise where like rom-coms, I think you're either going like, you know, like I'll be stereotypical. I think it's usually probably girls going together or couples. And then if people are single, that's not happening. Superhero movies is highly driven by males. So it's like, okay, they're going to go with themselves or their significant other or kids and whatnot.
and then you have action movies, but those are kind of on Netflix. Netflix and a lot of dramas are just streaming now, so people really don't go to that, but I think people still do like the, at a horror movie, the speakers are going to get really loud, you're going to jump, and you're going to look around and have that awkward laughter sort of thing, right? So that's why I think they're unique in that way, because there's nothing better than like, oh, well, let's go see a scary movie, where not many times, like, hey, you want to go see that new, you want to go see Daryl's product, Bad Exam, because people that was hype, I mean, like a movie that's like that, but not an IP sequel, it's like, oh, you want to go
see that? But even then, who knows? Because every once in a while, nah, I guess I'm wrong. I was surprised that, you know what that Verity movie is that came out this weekend, that Anne Hathaway one? Yes. Yeah. But I forgot that's based on a very famous author, Colleen Huther, who's just like putting out books and movies and they're doing all really well, right? So again, kind of an IP. So I think horror just has that where, like you'll mention the success rate because the budget, but also just with people. I think people always kind of want to, get scared and see something in a communal experience like that. Because even then, like, I feel like that used to be comedies, but that's even gone away.
So many comedies are on streaming and when's the last comedy that was like a massive hit? Maybe Anyone But You? And that was still rom-commy, but like, I remember seeing Hangover 1.
Naked Gun did like pretty well, but it was like a hundred something million.
Yeah, right? Like, there's no like, I'm trying to think of like a massive hit, right? And like I said, I remember seeing Hangover like one and two and just like full theaters, people laughing their ass off. I don't know when I'll ever be able to see a comedy again, that's a full theater. I think people have the theory that Marvel kind of killed comedies because you kind of get like that itch scratch there, right? With a lot of the quips and the jokes, but yeah, it's, I can't say, I think the studios just have to make those movies still, but just at a, at a lower budget, obviously with Tom Cruise and then you read to, it was harder maybe to get there, but I think it's what you, you have to do. And which sucks. Cause
I got, I'm very happy that Digger is this and they did give it this big budget. I think they, use it for the most part but then if you don't get the returns how can you yeah how can you justify you know so.
Yeah we've we've talked about that too recently how like the idea of like the the movie star like that thing is kind of faded away too where there's just you have someone like gossing who feels like he's on top of the world and then you have that stunt man.
Movie fall guy yeah which.
I which i love that movie and then just like kind of bombs doesn't really do well and yeah i feel like tom cruise is kind of Maybe in that phase here, and it's too bad.
He was the last one.
Yeah, he was taking a swing here with something kind of crazy and different, and now it's like, okay, does this mean he's just going to go back and do generic action movies?
I don't watch these things, so maybe I shouldn't call them generic.
But action, classic Tom Cruise-y action movies again for the rest of his days.
I looked it up on Digger. Since 2014, Dylan, he's done nothing but action movies. Other than Top Gun, but even Top Gun to me is an action movie. It was like Mission Impossible, Jack, it gets him with a gun. So he's been, he's been doing action stuff for a while now, which was what people want to see him in, right?
And that's the thing too, like, is that just it though? Is it that this audience for 12 years has grown up or seen him in this stuff? So when he goes and does a dicker, they go like, I don't really want that. You know, it's the same thing as a rock with smashing machine, right? Like I really like his performance. I think the movie is good, but that movie bombed too. Cause it's like, Do people look at Dwayne Bronson and they go, I don't really want to see him play a serious MMA fighter. I want to see him make a cheesy one-liner. But even then, you would think, okay, so he does that with Moana. He literally plays this iconic role for him and then that bombs.
That's a little more difficult because I think it's just live-action Disney's are very hit or miss. But still, with him, I always wonder what his team thinks right now because you've got the serious role and that kind of bombed. And then you have the the like back to the formula of the family and him being charismatic and that bomb too right so and i and do you think that's what it is with cruz that's just like hey they don't like them doing this or do you think it's just a case of maybe the audience is age le the people that would go buy a ticket.
Didn't the most recent uh Mission Impossible also eat it?
They underwhelmed. They underwhelmed. They also had a very big budget because they did a lot of COVID restrictions. So they bought a boat and they had everyone stay on the boat to stay isolated. Yeah, that's where there's that famous clip of Cruise losing on somebody because they took their mask off where they weren't supposed to. And he was like, I'm spending millions of dollars and stuff. But yeah, they did underwhelm.
Yeah, I think... Yeah, that's definitely possibly. Yeah i think that is possibly part of it it's it i mean again top gun was also obviously there's like a sequel but that was like a miracle right that that was as big as i.
Agree i i would have never thought that the sequel from the 80s like i know people would like top gun but i didn't think it was one of those that people were like i gotta see i can't wait for top gun i think it's you know.
There's something to the social media effect, obviously, and that's such a big thing right now. You're talking about your sister. I've seen Obsession because I've seen it on TikTok. For most people, though, that actually converted them to actually go see the movie. That's such a big part of it, too. I think Digger as a concept, the marketing of it, it's harder to pitch that as an event, something you need to go to, whereas Obsession, everyone wanted to be in the conversation on that. Odyssey, I've never heard anyone...
in recent years, told me anything about an IMAX, but everyone's like, oh, you see an IMAX? Like, they're talking about all this stuff.
A hundred percent, yeah.
Like, they care about that stuff suddenly because it's like, that's what everyone else is talking about on social media.
That's the buzzword, yeah.
It's a big part of all these things, right? It's like the social media aspect of it, the social aspect, people wanting to be in on things. And yeah, it's like harder for a movie like Digger, I think, to kind of take over in that way. I'm trying to think of like the weirdest movie we've seen, like, have a huge box office run recently. It just doesn't really happen, right?
Obsession isn't really like a weird movie. It's a pretty straightforward, scary thing, right?
Yeah, and even then, it is horror-like, but even Backrooms is... I think technically Backrooms is more weirder than Obsession, but it's still based on some stuff.
Yeah, that one I feel like has the cult following to it. And I think Obsession just... I mean, even that first trailer, it's a great hook, right? It's just a great simple concept, and digger is like it's it takes you a few sentences to explain why it is a hook you know and i think that sometimes people don't have like that attention span uh to stick around because i i think i also think digger looks cool but i did not care at all to go like the theaters for it i'll.
Just yeah well and that's the thing too dylan have you ever see at some point when you find out like what the movie actually is you're like oh man i don't know how they could have marketed this like if they marketed it it would have like given a lot away which they didn't want to but like it's now i said emily i'm like i I wonder if they should have marketed like that. It would have gave away a big twist, but it might have been better.
But you never know. It's armchair quarterback, right? Because then maybe it blows up and you win all this stuff and you get this acclaim and everything. And who knows? And that goes into Clay's question, which you touched on a little bit there. But he said, what would you like to see Cruz do next with John or Jector?
Not what you think. he'll do next. But what would you like him to do in a perfect world? So also, I don't think you're the biggest Tom Cruise guy, Dome. So is there something like... Yeah, is there... Is yours to go away to play Baron Iron Man to... What could he do? What could he do? Produce a.
No, I mean, I feel like this is kind of... This is kind of what I wanted from him, I think, was for him to do a weird thing like this. And again, I think this movie looks cool, and I will watch.
It before Golden Geeks, presumably.
Do you think it'll make an impact on Golden Geeks?
Should I watch it for that reason? I would fight for Cruise for sure.
If you would fight for Cruise, that's a good enough compelling point for me, because he's never really been a huge dent on the Golden Geeks, but it'd be fun to have him in there for a weird role.
Yeah, we'll see what happens, because luckily I heard you'd watch Obsession, so that would have been on my list, but that's knocked off. I think Taylor might pick Hocum, which if he does, then like.
I saw that's on Prime now, so that's on my list. Maybe I'll watch it this month for this.
Hocum's fun. Yeah, you like Adam Scott. Hocum's fun, like scary movies. So I think like, other than that and the drama, it might be there, you know? So, you know, we'll see. We'll see. Maddie's rolling over and it's great right now here in Golden Geeks and Digger, but you know.
I mean, when all the rumors were swirling, I was so stoked for Cruise to be in the final Tarantino movie, right?
And then, obviously, that kind of... Oh, yeah. All these things happen.
But, like, I mean, I'll take anyone in a Tarantino movie, of course, but I don't know. Something like that, a pairing like that seems like it could be really fun because, yeah, that is kind of the thing with Cruise.
Like, even outside of.
Like, before Digger, all these movies, it was like, isn't he, like, just working with the same director even outside of just the Mission Impossible stuff?
Isn't he, like, kind of just working with the same people. He's working with Macquarie a lot. Like he all, cause the, the, the working theory is he kind of ghost directs a lot of his movies, but he still likes the director there. But the buck stops with Tom Cruise on these movies, you know, he's directing these movies.
I want to see him have like, I mean, yeah, put him as a starring role in Tarantino. Sure, I'm down to see that. But give him, like, a weird eight-minute weird cameo role in a Tarantino movie. Like, that's the kind of fun stuff I want to see from him.
Yeah, or even if it was, like, a bigger juicy role, I'd like him to have, like, the Bruce Wills role in Pulp Fiction where, like, he's not, like, the main thing, but he has that big section there. And, you know, you just brought that back in my mind. That's, like, I have a few things. The Tarantino thing is definitely, because I want to see Cruise with Tarantino dialogue. I do think that's a big styles clash between the two, because I think Tarantino probably wants to sing in a very specific way.
Yeah, he's not going to be down for ghost directors.
On his set. But that's where you picture, if it's a small scene, he's like, hey, let's just have some fun. That's something, if it's Tarantino's final movie, you won't get a shot to do this again. So I would be down for that. Even then, like I just said, maybe he wants to star... I don't know, I almost would love the announcement if they say, hey, yeah, Cruise is directing a movie, and he's not in it. He's just going to direct it, and I'm like, okay, if he's, like, ghost directing these movies, and, like, which I don't think was the case with Digger, I don't think he did that, but with some of these action movies, like, okay, what does he have? Because if you listen to his interviews, he's very, he's very savvy with film and camera, and, like,
he's been around for a long time, he's worked with the best of the best, so he knows his stuff, so I wouldn't mind that. I guess I could say joked about it on the Discord, but not really. Again, this could be a Styles Clash, but I want to wake up on the day of the internet where they announced Tom Cruise is in the next Christopher Nolan movie.
Cause I think that's something that would be huge.
I would give me, give me, give me a recent Nolan movie where you would like sub in Tom Cruise. Like what's a role that you think you would thrive in? What kind of, even like a kind of a role.
Yeah. I would hate this cause this would take his Oscar away, but I think he could have done what Downey did in Oppenheimer when he plays the Robert Strauss role. that kind of charismatic asshole and just like intimidating, but you kind of see his point of view. And again, I wouldn't take Danny out of.
That, but that's... That's why I almost like shuddered a little bit because I feel like I don't really see him as like a starring role in a Nolan thing.
No, I don't think so either.
But I definitely could see him in one of those very specific like castings like that.
And I don't think, I guess Robert Downey Jr., or I was going to say, I guess Oppenheimer was an ensemble like Inceptions. I'm trying to think of other stuff. like the, the way when they go to the island or not, but I'm an Odyssey and they bump into Cersei, that would be good. Like a big scene or segment where it's a character that's something and he's going to be the driving force, that scene, right. You know, maybe make him a Cyclops. I don't know, but maybe, yeah.
Maybe like an Agamemnon, like you, you can't even, you don't even.
See his face, you know, or even presence or even the role like Bertholdt had where like, he's in the movie, but not like a ton, you know, that's probably too small, but like something like that. Um, Or even, like, think about Oppenheimer. Think about the certain people, like, remember Casey Affleck's in there for a cup of tea when he plays that? Like, you could do that where there's a couple actors just coming for a scene. There's somebody else, too, in Oppenheimer that I'm forgetting that's just in there for a little bit. Even Florence Pugh is not in that movie that much, but she has, like, a big... Yeah, I'm not saying Cruise has got to be naked in this or anything. He's riding. Yeah, Killian Murphy. Hey, if
anyone's going to make a billion dollar gay drama, Christopher Nolan, he might be the guy to do it. Let's see what could happen.
Get Cruise and Walking Phoenix, who bailed on that other movie where you had to.
Oh yeah, they're making that movie now. It's Pedro and Little Falcon. Pedro and Little Falcon. Little Falcon. Pedro stepped up in Little Falcon. They're going to crush it. Yeah.
What's Joaquin Phoenix up to? Is he in a thing? I feel like he hasn't been in anything since Joker 2. He just like quit acting.
He did Eddington, that Ari Aster movie, which I don't think you've still seen. It's crazy that I still haven't seen the latest Ari Aster movie. Yeah. My favorite, quote unquote, favorite director. And he's got another one coming out. Have you heard the new one he's working on with Scar Jo and Jacob Elordi? And it's got another hang on stack cast. I'm not looking forward to it at all because it's like, It sounds like he's making a parody of the Paul brothers. You know who those are, right?
The Paul brothers? Like Logan Paul and Jake Paul. Oh, those Paul brothers. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a parody of them? Well, no. I just feel like it's going to be a heightened, we're basing it off of this. I'll read the plot line for you. Who's making this movie? It's Ari Aster. Okay. Oh, Ari Aster. The plot of the movie is a surgeon's working on like a Jake Paul type of character and he dies during surgery. So then she has to deal with his family and the fallout of that. I think.
Dylan took a big... You gotta watch the video. Oh, this guy. He was on a roll, and then... So I think Elori's playing... I think he's playing the Jake Paul character. I think ScarJo's playing the surgeon. Ella Purnell just joined the cast, so I'm not sure if that helps you at all there, too. She's great. You know who that is, right? Of course, yeah. Okay. It didn't do anything. Jude Law has joined the cast.
I guess I need to see a trailer for this movie.
I also have no interest. I liked Eddington. Eddington is very much like Digger where a lot of people don't like it or a lot of people enjoy it. I liked Eddington, but I'm definitely not as high as I was. Because even with, because what did it go? Even Bo is Afraid. which I think is maybe my lowest score for him, was still such a wild movie. It's like, oh, I'm definitely down to see whatever he's doing. And it's not really too wild. It's way more political. And that's where I'm always worried about, or I'm already worried about this now, like, like a low, like just Paul Brothers music.
Are we getting more like, I feel like it's, it's going to be a commentary on like social media people and that type of stuff, which is like, I get it. But like, again, it's kind of like social wrecking where I see these previews and they're all the selling point is, hey, Facebook's bad. It's, it's hunting you, but it's like, Everyone's still using it. Everyone's still doing their thing. So it's like, what's this really going to accomplish? And same thing with this. Like, are people going to go, oh, the Paul brothers, you know, like there might be pieces of shit. It's like, nah, if you like them, we'll like them and they'll still follow them. So it's like, yeah, I don't know. I don't know. But, um, I don't know how we got here. Oh, oh,
that's my last one for Cruz is, and this could be a smart tea leave thing. Cause it, what, uh, Mike said as well, I think he should do a horror movie. I do. I think he should pop out with someone like Guillermo del Toro. or someone like that, someone like her. And that's where, like, the thing is with these Digger things, when it's not Digger things, but just, like, the Tom Cruise thing, it being $ 161. 80, I bet a lot of that is his, not a lot, but a good chunk is his money, right? So I do think he has to do, like, the Denis Villeneuve or Nolan, where a lot of those actors, if you look at the pay, like, I can't remember, not all this, but it was either for Dune 1 or 2, like, the payrolls leaked for these actors, and they are all below
their quota, right? And the rumor is that's with Oppenheimer too. But that's just because they go, well, I'd rather be in this movie than not do it all and break the budget because I want more money. I think that's why I loved Cruise. Let's say he fucking goes finds Curry Barker. He's like, oh, I love this session. I want to be in your fourth movie. I'll do it for this much. I'm not even going to bend you over a barrel. I just love your vision. And that's what I think he needs. He needs to find some either legendary R2 director like Adele Toro Or maybe like a Bong Joon-ho. Yeah. Put him in the next Bong Joon-ho movie. Well, even though Mickey's 17, they're not giving him a budget after that, too. But if it's a
smaller one.
Maybe Cruise comes in there, and he brings some of the budget, and he does a little ghost directing.
On the side. I'm pitching no budget. I'm pitching he's got to take a hit.
I'm saying Cruise is a producer. Sure.
He really wants to support the vision. But one step behind that, if you can get Cruise in a Parasite type of movie... That'd be great. You know, like him doing that. But again, I feel like that was him doing that with Digger. I know Clay said that at the Discord. He's just scared now to scare him off.
And I am too because I was tired.
Even like the Mark Ruffalo character in Mickey 17.
That's kind of Digger though. Digger's hidden on some of those vibes. Not exactly, but it's kind of hidden on that like. bad politician, huge billionaire, like what they're going.
To do, but maybe a Yorgos, get him in a Yorgos.
Oh my God.
I'm now I'm thinking of Mark Ruffalo. I'm thinking, I'm just like replacing Mark Ruffalo with Tom Cruise and things. I'm thinking of him in, uh, in poor things.
Yeah. Get him to, or the default role. He's going to, you know, that, or you know what? No, to me, here, here's the answer, Dylan. And I don't know what they're, I know he's doing Romeo and Juliet next. I don't think he'd go to Barker. Yorgos. No, no, no. Robert Eggers. That's my pitch. Okay. Cruise goes to Robert Eggers, and you get him one of those scary... Yeah, that I'm very down for. Yeah, scary gothic. I'm not sure what monster you do now. He's done Dracula. He's done that.
Does Cruise do voices? Is he a voice guy? Or is he always.
Doing his voice? He has a southern accent in Digger.
Okay, but is he ever doing creepy.
I don't think so, no. No, I don't think so, no. He's like, I want you to know it's me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So those are my pitches. Nolan, Tarantino, director's own thing, or a horror movie. That's my pitch there. Not Marvel. Don't go do the Iron Man variant.
I know everyone wants that. I like the Eggers. That's what I'm putting in my... Yeah.
I'm putting my eggs in that basket. Because he also... Here's my... Well, no. I was going to say, because he's... It's delayed right now, but he was going to do A Christmas Carol. I was going to pitch him as Scrooge, but you've got to go to foe as Scrooge, right? You can't not... Get Scrooge off my... Out of my... No.
I don't want... No. None of that. But believe in Eggers. You can't believe that Eggers will not give you Christmas Carol that you'd be like, wow, okay, this... Don't you dare, Eggers. Don't you dare.
Don't pull an Ariadne and throw your career in the.
That's not throwing away. He can do something really special with Christmas Carol. Get it out of my screen. Think about the Old English and the Nosferatu and all that. What would you rather take? Christmas Carol or Romeo and Juliet from Eggers?
Yeah, I really am not a Shakespeare guy, so you're putting me between a rock and a hard place right now.
Charles Dickin, man. He wrote the greatest story of all time.
That's a Christmas carol. Okay, I'll take that over Shakespeare, yeah.
Well, there you go. I think we had a good conversation about that. Did we resolve the problems? No. And I think what's going to happen in the next 10 years, it's going to keep doing the same thing. You're going to get a bunch of remakes.
Support GV Studios making original movies.
Yeah. Adrenochrome, December 4th. Come out for free, too. It's going to be a free YouTube. Yep. You got a short coming out?
The only people making original movies, GV Studios and Ari Aster.
Yeah, yeah. Even Robert Eggers is not, right? He's taking these monsters. Exactly, yeah. Come up with your own stuff, Eggers. Yeah. All right, let's take an ad break before we get to these other stories. We'll be right back. And we are back. If you didn't want that ad break, head over to patreon.com because you get the ad-free tier and a bevy of a bunch of other tiers. like everyone does over there, especially our Patreon producers, Aaron Braden, Abel Darkness, Jack Grant, Super Ben, Mike Gallows, 690k, Norm Rees-Fias, Hadoggle, Cocktail Clay, Lenny Kravitz, John Noem, Sam Green, John M.
Did you say John with no M?
Sorry, I screwed it up. That's what you heard me. That works too. John with no M. John with no H.
John with no M and John with M.
Yeah. Matthew Fletcher and Summer Hansi. thank you very much. On that tier, you get every single episode we do. You get every benefit. So just this week, or a couple weeks ago, I posted some behind-the-scenes of GVS stuff, Late Night Biker, and that's on there. You get, there'll be lots of content, like we're starting the Batman Animated Series.
When we start to do those early, the early releases, you guys get them there. But yeah, there's four tiers, a bunch of benefits. We very much appreciate it. When you go on there, you support us, and you can create shows, and just gives a lot more leeway to do more content for you guys. And that's where we try our best. We know, again, we're just talking about the economy. We know anybody that's subscribed there, whether you're the dollar tier to the $ 15 tier, we know that that's coming out of your hard-earned paycheck. So we really appreciate that. So we try our very best to earn that.
And that's why every few months we ask you, hey, what do you want? January will be the satisfaction survey, but we try our best to give you polls and let you pick, and you can pick movies and games and stuff. So we try our very best to give you what you want. If you ever want something that's on there, let us know, and we might consider it because we're always an open door. And, yeah, as we talk about, lots of good stuff going on. We're marching Extra Life for the next few weeks. That'll be coming out there. I know the shirts are going to be live tomorrow. I'll tease them here. We got a Resident Evil-themed one, Dylan, and a GTA one. You know what?
I'll bring them up. I'll just show them. They're not on the market yet.
Bring them up.
I haven't seen them. Uh, Taylor, I think he said the res one. I don't want to misspeak for him, but I think he said that's his favorite one yet. So, um, let me just, no computers are syncing. That's not true. Oh, there we go. Hang on. Recent. I was in the wrong, uh, the wrong Google drive there. Um, what the fuck? One second.
Let me try this one more time. Resident evil.
I'm excited to see this. Resident evil, iconic typography, iconic logo. that series has had. And GTA as well. The, uh, I don't know what we call that aesthetic, the GTA aesthetic, but it's just the GTA aesthetic.
Exactly. It's like, so here, here's the Resident Evil one in red. He made, he made two of them. He made one in red and then the blue. I get it. Cause the extra life, the, the blue, I'm going to personally begin the red one. Cause I like the res red one. Yeah.
The red is where we want to be here.
Yeah. And then this one, uh, I really enjoy this one they made here. Here's the Geek First Podcast one. And he's got the X there because this is Dylan, our 10th extra life. Isn't that crazy? This is going to be our 10th one doing this. That is insane behavior. Yeah. So there's going to be a bunch of tears. So these shirts.
Can we get sued for this? Is this too close to the actual GTA logo?
We won't get sued. We could get it taken down, which there's only one shirt that's... Can you take a guess of one shirt that's been taken down over our years and themes that we got pegged for? You can't sell this? No, I can't. I need a hint. Give me a hint. Trivia. I'd say it's a series you love.
I feel like I don't remember Lord of the Rings getting taken down.
I was going to say, and you own the shirt. It is Lord of the Rings. That's the only one that ever got docked for being too close to... Really? Yeah, I don't know if it was... I don't own that shirt. I thought you bought it. I don't think I have that shirt. Okay, that's... Well, what we're also going to do for our 10-year, we're going to see the Lord of the Rings. Maybe we can make some changes because people that own that shirt own it. Or what's going to happen is it's going to go up. You can buy because we people bought it and then it got taken down like a few months later so the people that had the loyal ring shirt that is like uh that's a real exclusive but what we're going to do for the 10 years all these shirts that red shirt
the gta shirt when you buy this the proceeds go towards bc jones hospital we are going to open up the vault dome we're going to open up every single extra life shirt because we thought hey for a decade I think we've only been doing this for five or six years now. But if you've missed a shirt, we got Barbie. Maybe you got Lord of the Rings. We got Superman. We got Fantastic Four. We got X-Men 97.
We got a bunch of themes on there. So that's what we're going to do for the store. Everything's open. So if you ever missed one, all the fun.
We got the Bowie's Afraid shirt.
That one's really good. Yeah. I'll message Taylor tonight at 1 a.m. Hey, can you make this an editing? Can you do that? But yeah, you got the gamut. And yeah, if you want to donate, we'd very much appreciate it. We're staying up for 24 hours. All donations are tax deductible, so you can write those off. And yeah, we're going to have a bevy of unlocks and things, whether they're stuff we record in the future, whether it's stuff we do on that night. There's a new kind of punishment tier I found. I don't want to spoil what it is, but it's going to be good. Taylor has us doing a wild one. So there's going to be, or at least me. Are you agreeing to that one? Don't say it out loud, but are you agreeing to that one
that he put in the chat when you gave the true lies eyes?
Oh, God.
This was so long ago. No, it was. That was like two days ago. I don't know. It was a physical body one. It was a physical body one.
I don't know what that actually means. I'm guessing it's like a device.
Yes. It's a device that puts you through those feelings.
It simulates a certain feeling.
Yeah. Yeah, I'm down. Okay, perfect. So there's going to be lots of good stuff. Announcements will be upon us. Just like, I guess this was an announcement, but this came out last week. Obviously, the merger has happened, unfortunately, with Paramount and Warner Brothers. So lots of moves are going to be made. As of right now, Dylan, it seems like the Shadows of the Past Lord of the Rings film is on hold. I should have pulled the article because I fucking suck when I'm not prepared on a Tuesday. Shadows of the Past, let's see. on hold but the idea is oh I think I got the article here but let's see here okay so the idea was met with both skepticism and excitement no no no that's not okay so according to Night Edge Media who's
done some stuff right before I'd say they're a C plus tier but other people kind of hinted like yeah I'm hearing this too now they've merged has decided to hit pause on the movie the idea had been to film it shortly after Lord of the Rings Hunt for Golem and Rat production so what's gone wrong Well, we don't know exactly, but the site points out that Skydance owns CBS, which did fire Stephen Colbert, so you got that now that they work with that company. It also appears that studio is understandably eager to see how The Hunt for Gollum performs before going all in with another live action movie, which could be the result of a tepid response to the Rings of Power show and the War of the Reherence box office struggles. Yeah, so that's
where I guess the idea is, I think this Colbert stuff might be speculation, but How do you feel about this one from a, does this make sense to you? And then two just on a personal, I don't know if you remember, do you remember what this film was going to be adapting?
No, but I remember that it's hard to get, I've never really been like that excited about it yet, just because I needed to see kind of what the vision would be like, what it would actually look like, because it kind of just felt like an idea more than anything.
It was these six chapters in Fellowship of the Ring that they did not cover in the movie. And it was, I guess, let me give you the log line, because it was a very, not confusing, but it was one of these of like, oh, how do you, how do you do, like, it was doing the thing where it's, looked like it was, I don't think they wanted it to be just like, oh, it's a prequel movie, right?
They wanted to be like, oh, it's something a little bit more. But I, let's see, here we go. Set 14 years after Frodo Baggins departs to the Undying Lands, and an older Samwise Gamgee set out to retrace earlier paths of their original journey to the Shire. And then this, the mystery. Sam's young daughter, Elnor, investigates a long-buried secret regarding the trials, uncovering a hidden near-disaster that can nearly cause the War of the Ring to fall before it truly began. So it's one of these things where it was going to be a prequel, but... but use a framing device as, oh, something's going on, so we're going to retrace our steps. That was the log line there.
Yeah, I mean, I know a lot of people were excited about this because, I mean, I guess if you're a big Colbert head, and he's obviously talked a lot in the past about how big of a fan he is of this, and so to have him involved is a cool idea. Maybe I'll be the corporate shill here. I think this is like a totally reasonable decision and probably a good decision. Because yeah, I wore the Rohirrim, didn't really move the needle.
Rings of Power.
I thought that show was doing pretty well, but I also know it's extremely expensive. So I don't know, maybe it's a tricky one to quantify and it's different for a streaming television show versus a movie in a box office thing compared to what the Hobbit movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy did in the box office.
But yeah, I think it's a totally reasonable call to wait and see how Gollum does before greenlighting any more projects and really getting them off the ground. So, yeah, I'm personally not too disappointed about this. I mean, I obviously love Lord of the Rings. It's one of my favorite movie series IP of all time. But I'm also not that excited for these new things that are coming out.
I did see War River Hero, and I enjoyed that movie enough. But, you know, not quite as good as that original trilogy, of course.
That's just.
untouchable. But yeah, I think this is a totally reasonable call, and probably the right call as well.
Yeah, I think I... I don't hate to agree with you. I don't mind agreeing with you. More so just like, it's that idea like, oh yeah, that corporation's now twice down the line. Oh, I understand. But it is, again, from a business point of view, and that's where... Because I've got a follow-up question for you in a second, but for me, to be in line with you again, I'm not that excited for... I don't see... I guess I just, I read these books a long time ago and I plan to, because I got the audio books, I plan to go back. I just don't know, like are the, even the book purists, like I really need those six chapters cover. I get it. Tom Bombal and I love him. I love Kirkland. It's like, is it really like if for the people that watch the movies
and I know there's people that don't like those movies that are book readers, but the people that are book readers, they enjoy both. Do they look at fellowship? They go, man, it would just be, little bit better or be perfect we have these six chapters and i go i don't think that's the case and then i i think is anyone gleaming on for like oh well i'd love to like uh what's sam been up to and like what's his daughter what they were tracing and like this idea of oh they're gonna discover some secret just i feel like lord of the rings especially when you got the extended cuts it just like in the movie realm every stone could be unturned especially like Return of the King that's like four hours it's like I think you got
it I think it's all covered it's all there so I just I've never been that big of a fan of this idea I like Stephen Colbert but I also don't know how he is as like a script writer or anything like that so I just don't know if it's just like is it just because he's a big fan and he's friends with Peter Jackson so here we go you look at people like J.K. Rowling where great book writer but we always thought of the Beast movies she screen wrote those and it felt like that's always something that was off of like okay it just didn't transition there so it's like could Colbert do the same?
So I don't know. And yeah, and I get it too, right? Where people go all the timing of, Hey, just this year, CBS fired Colbert. Cause he had a lot of issues with political stuff and Trump stuff and yada, yada, yada. And they're very in line with him. So could that be, could they, could that be a scapegoat? And the whole reason is, ah, fuck this guy. Absolutely. Absolutely. That could be the reason. But I do say, if you take that out of it, when you look at, okay, let's see for how for hunt for Gollum is going to do.
Because I really don't know. And that's going to be my follow-up, Dylan. We still got a year. That comes out December next year. What's your temperature on that now? Especially this box office, we've seen a couple. Look at Mandalore and Grogu, right? But then you look at Toy Story 5, that's a billion-dollar movie. So I feel like this summer has shown there's a slew of nostalgia IP that's done really well and a slew of nostalgia IP that's kind of bumbled at the box office. So where do you think that is? Because I feel like they probably don't know, and I honestly don't know. So that's why I agree that I think it is a good...
They had a good idea to wait because I can't tell you what Haunted for Gold is going to be. You could tell me it could be a billion. I'd go, I believe you. You could tell me it's Mandalorian Grogu numbers. I could believe that. I really don't know. Interesting.
Yeah, I think it'll be a big movie. I don't think it'll cross the billion dollar threshold. I don't think it'll be quite on that tier. But I think it'll do quite well. I think people are just going to see those trailers. They're going to be nostalgic. They're going to see a lot of the actors in those same roles.
Hopefully they get the look of it down and all that kind of stuff. So I think the movie is going to be a success. I don't think it's going to be monster numbers though. So I could still see it being a success and then maybe not even like continuing to green light this. Like maybe they just go ahead with some other thing that feels more surefire because even that like reminded me of that pitch for this movie.
I'm trying to think of like how a trailer like that lights the world on fire and gets people who are like get the nostalgic people to come by. Cause obviously that's what Hunt for Gollum is all about is like, Oh yeah, this is pure nostalgia bait. And you know, obviously we all love Samwise, but like, I don't know if people are going to see him and nothing else that they recognize in a Lord of the Rings movie other than like the Shire and decide to like to go, go see it in theaters.
So yeah, I don't know.
I think, I think, it will do well but I don't think it will necessarily mean this Colbert movie gets kind of back on track and I think they would maybe just green light other things that are possibly a bit more straightforward and easier to grab the attention.
Of Lord of the Rings fans yeah I kind of agree because the problem to me with and not the issues where hey like I'm not really looking that forward to Shadows of the Past if it does happen right For me, the issue, if you're looking from a financial point of view, is, well, you're going to get Gandalf in Hunt for Gollum. You're getting Elijah Wood in Hunt for Gollum. I guess you're not getting Aragorn, but would the idea be like if the guy, not the guy, I guess, what's Jamie Dornan, if he works out in Hunt for Gollum, people like him as Aragorn, would he then reprise the role there, which I also really don't like.
I still don't like it, but I can maybe get on board with okay, this is like a few years before something, Aragorn looks a little younger, yeah, this actor, sure. But if you start to be like, oh, this was happening during Fellowship of the Ring, and now it's a new actor playing Aragorn in these six chapters, it's like, okay, now it's just too jumbly. So I just feel like you kind of only, I guess not only, but you really just get like one big shot of the nostalgia trip.
And I guess you could say, oh, if it works, does that mean like, you can do it again. And maybe, I guess, I guess it just depends on also the quality of Hunt for Golem. I think if it is at least a good movie, people might want to, oh, you know what? I love Elijah Wood as Frodo, so I'm down to come back in a couple years from now and see it again, you know? Or is it the, ah, I've been here and done that.
That's a good point. Because I don't think it'll be a very good movie. And so maybe they get away with it once, but then it doesn't happen.
You've no faith in the director of Venom Let There Be Carnage?
Uh believe it or not not the highest amount of faith in that one unfortunately a movie i haven't seen though so maybe it's my favorite venom movie and i just haven't seen.
It so were you on venom 3 were you.
I was on three but i.
Still never got that's a wild what a wild journey you have there with the with the venom movies wow that's interesting but Yeah, so I'm going to say this movie doesn't see the light of day. I agree, Dylan, that I think Hunt for Golem will do well. I'm not going to say a billion, but I think it will do well during Christmas time. Yeah, I think people...
That's a good point. That's a good release date for it, I think. Yeah, families together, let's go back. But I think that's what it is. You squeeze that stone once, and then I really don't know, because I think it's just... it's the same way as like, I know people hate it, but that's why they reboot Harry Potter. Cause it's like without more sequels and without that cast coming back, it's like, that's what people love is those care. They love the actors in those roles, but they also just love those characters. Right.
And I think that if you start to do like a fantastic beast, kind of like for the Harry Potter world, not, not saying shadow passes out. I'm just saying if shadow passes gone, what do you do next? Lord of the Rings on the big screen. It's like, I don't know what there is to do. Like it's like, and I don't know if.
Like the new generation or like the younger generation, the age we were when we fell in love with Lord of the Rings. I don't know if the young, the people who are that age now are wanting something like that.
I don't know.
I don't know if Lord of the Rings is kind of the cup of tea that they're looking to drink, you know?
Yeah. Yeah. It might be just our tea, the expired tea, you know? Could be.
Yeah.
Speaking of sequels and speaking of ideas from the merger, there's another one. We got this that we've been watching and we're done. Barbie 2. Dylan, I know you were a massive fan of the first Barbie. Loved it. Huge fan. You were ready for number two. So what happened was, I guess I'll give you a little breakdown of this.
So the past year, when Warner Brothers was by itself, David Zasloff and company kept going to Greta, Ryan Gosling, Noah Baumbach, that's Greta's husband and co-writer, and Margot Robbie. Of course, they also need Barbie, right? And they kept going to them being like, hey, we want to do Barbie 2. Let's get this done. And they're like, great.
Here's our price tag. And they kind of kept going back and forth, apparently, and they just could never agree on a pricing. It sounds like Margot and company really want a big high dollar amount. I can't remember what it was described. It was like someone said like an astronomical amount she was asking for. Because, oh, a $ 1 billion movie, huge thing, and you kind of, as we just mentioned, you would need, just like Lord of the Rings, you need these characters back. So the wrinkle that came into this was in December, the rights that Warner Brothers purchased for Barbie expire. So Mattel would have their, it's up to them if they could go shop it around now.
They could say, okay, we're going to get out of here. We're going to see you. And apparently it was a big standstill and they were trying to negotiate. It was still not going anywhere. And the idea is, hey, you got to get to December. Either you can say, hey, we're not doing Barbie 2 and that maybe goes elsewhere or like, let's do this. Obviously, I think it echoes a lot of the Joker situation where very different movie.
First one makes a billion. All the stars director wanting way more money, but then you don't know if it's going to be a hit. I personally think Barbie 2 has a much better shot of being hit than Joker 2, but I digress. But now, Warner Bros. Paramount merged. Apparently, they're trying to make this a– not a fast track.
This is not, like, completed, but they.
Have– Before December, they've got to make this thing happen.
Well, yeah. Apparently, it's just the people at Skydance, they have every intention of making this work. So I imagine it's going to go through, but I just want to ask you because also I don't think you'll be there, but where do you see a Barbie 2 now in 2028, 30, you know? Let me ask you this.
If we hit December or whatever that date is, and then Mattel can kind of pull it away from this and then they can shop it around, does that impact the Margot Robbie and Greta aspect of it all? Can they still get those people with a new studio? It's kind of a weird area, right?
I think technically what you'd have to do is you can make a Barbie movie, but you'd have to... I don't think you could make the same... You couldn't... have direct continuation plot lines. So you'd almost have to make a Barbie two and ignore some stuff or just kind of pretend like Barbie's on a new, cause I don't even know if, could Barbie be, cause obviously the first one ends with her in the real world. Could she be in the real world down Barbie two or would they say, no, no, no, that's tied to our movie.
Right.
So I'll say that. I don't know if they could, I think technically they could make a movie with Ryan, Greta and Margo, but they'd have to be very careful. It's kind of like back in the day, um, I can't remember who made it, but Dylan, there's a James Bond with Sean Connery that's not a technically licensed Bond movie.
It's called Never Say Never Again. But they found one book that wasn't bought because Bond was a book series. So they did that where Connery was playing Bond in like a semi-unsanctioned Bond movie. So there is, I think, ways, if they could do that, there's ways around it here with Barbie. Because you just do, you could just call it Barbie Dreamhouse and Margot is in it and then no one knows any different.
And maybe I'm crazy here. I feel like... I think all you need, need, need, need is Margo. Like, I think you could put.
Not even Ryan.
I think you could get away without Ryan.
Whoa. I can. Yeah. I'm Ken. Some people argued he stole that movie from her.
I think you could get a new Ken and there could be good jokes about that and it's like Jacob Elordi and it's fine.
Jacob Elordi about the Wuthering Heights success.
Get that marketing campaign of them having an affair again going on.
Yeah. Well, I know you asked what Walking Phoenix was up to. Let's get a whole new different Ken. Let's see what he's got going on. Walking Phoenix.
Maybe that's where Tom Cruise needs to go next with his career. He should be the new Ken.
Man, could you imagine? That would be insane. Those posters, Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise.
Nothing against Greta, of course, because obviously she had a vision, fucking nailed it, and people loved it. But I think they could go another direction in that could still work and the vision could still be there obviously it.
Sounds like the cast is very much like it's all or nothing.
That makes sense because i mean margo's pretty was pretty involved on like as a producer and stuff yeah.
It's her company lucky chat produced her company.
Some some would call her a ghost writer on or a ghost director on.
Barbie i wouldn't call it i don't know maybe she was maybe she was but uh you know But yeah.
I mean, I think that that movie, that sequel will be huge as well. I could see it like actually performing under what the first one did possibly because there was a bit of, again, like the event of that was tied a little bit to the Barbenheimer effect of it all. And that became a huge like meme that actually was more than a meme because it became a real thing. Uh, but I, I, I still think it'll be a huge movie. And even if they increase those price tags, I, yeah, I don't think you'll get a joke or two situation where it just like totally flops the other way. I think you'll have a movie that is still like very financially successful. People will probably still really enjoy it. Uh, if it's like even, you know,
80% as good as, as, as that first one. And yeah, I think you can go a lot of directions with it because it's not like, yeah, it's not like it's an IP where it's based off some specific story that people will know. It's, it's just, you fill in whatever you want to do. So I think that movie will still be really big, but I think it is crucial to get at least Margo, but preferably the rest of that main crew.
I agree with you if they came to me and said, hey, we can only get one of them, and they are agreeing to this. Yes, you get Margo. That is the one. I do think you still need Dawson because I feel like that was a big deal. I guess I'll say it this way. I think for it to be a big hit, I think you need the band back together.
I think you need a lot of those like Kate McKinnon's and Simu Lee. I'm not saying they're going to get the massive price tag, but I think just that idea, you can introduce some new Barbies and Kens, like you said, that could be the fun of it, right? But I think you want a sense of returning back there. And again, I'm in lockstep with you there where I think it would be a hit. It wouldn't be as big as the first one, but I think it would still be a hit. uh again you never know i was the guy that said they should do joker a bunch of people said joker 2 don't do it and i said oh for sure uh the budget kind of ballooned there and i didn't know that but still even without the budget that movie ate shit but i think bar 2
is way more commercially like accessible and I don't think they'd be like, because there's portions of Barbie that wasn't musical. So for Joker 2 to become musical, I think there was a lot of people being like, I'm out here. I don't really want to do that. Where Barbie, it's like, I think that crowd would be fine if it got more song numbers or whatnot. I don't think they would revolt.
You'd almost have to do the reverse where Barbie would have to become like a dark drama for people to go like, oh, what are they doing?
I think a big part of it too is the timing of it. This should have been like well in production already you know like they they should have uh you know if they wanted to obviously there's a lot tied up in that if greta wanted to go make narnia and do other stuff instead but you know i think that that's like definitely was the call and with so many of these things yeah like we'll see what happens with batman part two if that does eventually come over that's like so long after the first one that's like specifically a story based off the first one joker was 2019 into 2024 was that the.
Something like that like you have five but.
Again like that's the covid stretch too so it feels like 38 years even though it's only five years and i think.
Brand new day had five years that was mass like still big break but massive success right so.
Yeah that i mean that feels like it's in a bit of a different conversation because it's spider-man but i i do think that barbie is is not going to be subject to that same like The stretch of time torment that some of these other movies goes through, I don't think Barbie will be affected by that in that same way. I think that even if they take a few years, like, I think it'll still be fine. I don't think it has that... Because when that came out, that came out 20... 23.
23, right?
So it's kind of like past that COVID, like, time warp to some extent. I think it'll still be successful. But yeah, they really, they should have been... That should have been coming out this year. I mean, they should have kept up with Nolan, you know, and just keep matching up with Nolan.
They should have, yeah. Well, yeah, one, like you said, she should go do Narnia.
So at some point, it's like, do you just throw Greta to the wind if she's asking too much money or is spending too much time on Narnia and you just get someone else to just pump this thing out?
I think this is, in not the success way, but I think this is very much like a Joker situation where I, don't get me wrong, I could be wrong. I don't think any of these four actually really want to do this movie, but I think they're just like, what price?
They're just setting, yeah, they're like, what's like the meme level, like fake amount high we can put it where.
They'll say no. Don't get me wrong. I think when they get the money, they're like, okay, we got to go make something good because they shouldn't just go. And same thing with Todd Phillips, right? I don't believe he actually went out to go make something bad. I think he just made something that the audience wasn't really wanting, especially myself after Joker 2. I think they'd get the Chengo K, but that's why I think these amounts, when they say, oh, it's like an astronomical amount, I think it's just because as a star, you could say, hey, the last movie made like 1.3 billion. I'm the star of that movie. I should get a little bit more from that. And if you don't give it to me, I'm not going to do it. And they have, they
have all the chips. And I think it's even stronger too, if all four of them, which that's a rumor, are linked together. Because it's like, well, we can't get, we can get Mario, we're not, well, let's just not pay Greta. We'll pay, like, If they all four are talking and know what each other's getting in a ballpark, it's like, that's when you're screwed. Especially the husband, like, the writer and director of this movie are husband and wife. So you're not getting... They know what their offers are getting, so you know that. Greta and Margot are friends, and I think Gosling's probably... I think Gosling's probably the easiest one to convince. I think he's fully in cash-to-the-bag mode right now. Like, what? He's in Star Wars, and then
what's he doing right after? Ghost Rider? I think he's just like a... hey, whatever you guys want to do as long as it's checked there, I'll be there. I'm not saying it's bad. Project Hail Mary was great, but I'm just saying I think he's in a different mindset nowadays.
It is really interesting to see how all their careers have gone since then. Gosling had a bomb here and there, but then Project Hail Mary was a big deal. People love it. Maybe a different genre, a different kind of character for him. As you just laid out, he has an interesting trajectory to his career going on here with jumping into the Disney-verse. And then Margot had a kid, right?
And then she hasn't even really been in anything recently.
Worthing Heights? It did very well, Worthing Heights. That was kind of like a return to form, right?
So I think she's probably just with being a mom and stuff now, too, she's probably a lot more selective with the roles she wants to take. So that's probably part of why she sets the price so high. And then Greta hasn't had something since Barbie Ray.
She's been to Narnia. She's been to Narnia once.
Yeah, so very different roads for them. But it'd be cool if they all led back to Barbie Land.
I feel like what did she... What was she in? Oh, Big Bull Beautiful Journey. That age shit. I liked it, but that age shit, I guess, for Margot. I thought there was something in there, but I was a fan. I defended it. But yeah, I know Greta did Narnia, and that's coming out in February of next year. We were talking about this in the Discord. Where are you in Narnia? Do you have any fandom for Narnia? Did you watch those movies as a young'un?
I remember loving the first one. I probably watched the first and second. I remember having the Game for the first one on GameCube, and I love that game.
There's a game. Oh. Yeah.
I mean, it was just a movie.
I don't care. Some of those are the best ones, like Pirates of the Caribbean's World Band, Harry Potter.
It was probably not a good one, but as a kid, I ate it up. So I loved that first one, and then, yeah, I definitely did not keep up with this series by any means, but there was a certain pocket of time. I would not say it's like, I wouldn't say I'm nostalgic for it. I have not revisited it since I was a child.
I'll have to bust this out at some point. I wonder how much it goes for, you know?
Yeah, I don't think I have it anywhere.
I think I sold it, but... It is looking a little rough here. Classic GameCube goodness, yeah. Yeah. Okay. Hey, some movie tie-in games were great, though, you know?
Hey, some of them were.
Some of them were. Yeah.
But it was just that era where every movie got one.
Yeah, let's see. Let's go price and see if we can buy it somewhere.
Oh, dude, this thing's got to be $ 5 to $ 10.
$ 10? Yeah, price turn. Let's see. This is... You can buy a loose package for $ 6. Let me see.
Do I still own it?
Graded, new. That'd be wild if Dylan still has Narnia. I doubt he does, but that'd be wild. If he does, I'd say I'd love to pull it out on the stream, but we know that's probably a dog shit game, right? It's probably not good, but I appreciate that he has it because some of them are really good. Let's go to Wikipedia. No, I sold it. That's fine. That's okay.
I just want to see what it was scoring at back in the day for its reviews. Aggregated Metacritic. You know what? You probably loved it for a good reason. A movie tie-in game that's 65 out of 100, that's a great.
Score for a movie tie-in. But the GameCube one was 71 out of 100, so there you go.
Oh, it was. So that's actually a really good score, I think, for a movie tie-in. Just want to ask you, just because it came up, do you think... my take of Narnia being a franchise of the past is a hot take, or do you think it's a just take? Like, the way you're talking about Lord of the Rings, I just look, because this, if you don't know this, Narnia, they're doing a big push with Netflix. Like, they're doing it.
It's going to be theaters everywhere. Like, it's getting a wide release. I just don't know if... Well, isn't that part of Greta's, like... It's even bigger now, though, than what they agreed upon. It's because Netflix is starting to, next year, they're going to... Yeah, next year, they're going to start reporting what they make on movies now, like, money-wise. So, they're going to... They're trying to get theatrical because they didn't get Warner Brothers. They're doing it themselves now. How interesting. Yeah, so they're getting in the theatrical game. But do you think, like, because I just look at Narnia and I'm like, I could see this being the equivalent of He-Man or something now where there's people like, eh, this is not for me.
This is not my generation.
Well, you're probably pulling this directly from, like, I'm guessing your kids don't care at.
All about Narnia. No, they've never seen Narnia. And they should.
They're at the age where they should, right?
Yeah, I'll probably show it to them. I'm like everybody else. I liked that first one a lot, but I've just never heard anyone mention Narnia. Even around the playground.
It's not like they're coming home to me like that. No. My friend Jenny told me about Narnia.
Thomas. Yeah. Have you heard anyone talk about Narnia? Non-podcast related? I was on a podcast.
Narnia... No, that does not come up.
I just wonder if... Because there's no preview for this, right? So let's say it's going to be Doomsday time, December. It's going to come in February. Everyone's sitting there, or even Dune, and they watch this Narnia trailer, and the logo pops up. Are people going, oh, my God, Narnia's back? It's like, oh, another Narnia. Okay. I just feel like it could be that. I feel like it's going to be... Now, Greta is a great director, so maybe she'll pull it off, but I just feel like it's going to be a lukewarm of like, all right, I guess Narnia's back. Cool.
I feel like, to some extent, though, you could have had... that reaction to like, oh, they're making a Barbie movie.
And then Barbie was huge.
And obviously part of that is like when you see the trailers, you like see what the vision is of it. And so maybe that's what Narnia needs is just like, has there been a trailer for it yet?
No, just images right now. So there you go.
Maybe, maybe when we see it, it'll bring it to life, you know?
Yep. Okay. Yeah.
I'm trying to think when, when, when did we first, is there a reaction on the podcast of like.
When Barbie was announced?
Before we knew anything about it.
I think we were hyped. I think we liked the idea of Ryan and Margo. I think we were all like, yeah, that makes sense. That's good. And I think the trailers were a mix of people being mad.
I feel like we wouldn't have really cared much until we actually saw a trailer, right?
I did because I loved Greta. So I was always on board. But I think the trailer is what did the whole like Barbie world and the plot line. So yeah, I agree with you. The trailer hooked people in, you know? So maybe Narnia does it again. I don't know. We'll see.
Yeah, could, could be, could be.
Yeah, that first half the year.
When's the last other Narnia thing that, like, came out? Like, is there a new book coming out? Or, like, I don't think there's been a game recently.
That sounds like the title of the worst book in the series. Has it just been dead since, like, 2007? Or, like, what's going on there?
Because there was, like, a few of those movies. I mean, they probably came out until, like, 2015 or something, right?
There was three of them. No, not 2015, I don't think. 2010.
Because that first one was in 2002 or something like that?
The first one was, if I can get some years here. Or five or something. uh five so it was oh five oh eight and then ten.
Okay yeah and then it's just been on ice since then no new books yeah because the first is there has there been like a tv show or like an animated anything like.
No idea i'm not in this the stratosphere.
Totally iced out since uh 2010 the ice queen like you know what's gonna be like travis.
GTA. That same timeline. It's been the same timeline as GTA. I don't know if I can put Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe. People have been getting hyped for 16 years for this thing. Yeah. The first one made $ 740, and then it went $ 419 and $ 415. So, a little drop there. A little drop. Did you ever know, because Taylor reads the books and knows, did you know Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe is not the first book? It's like the second or third book? No. They just started mid-series. That's awesome.
I love that.
That's a great... Do you? That's a great piece of trivia. I love that. Oh, cool. I did not know that. This movie's starting with the first book. It's like The Nephew's Magician or whatever. I think they're just calling it Narnia, which is smart. The Nephew's Magician?
Yeah, if they called it that, I don't know. Don't call your movie The Nephew's Magician.
Come on. Oh, no. It is listed Narnia. Oh, sorry. The Magician's Nephew. I had the... Nephew's... This goes into my dyslexia I have. Does that title sound better? Narnia is so fucking goofy. It's so cheesy.
That's such a Narnia-ass title. I've never heard that title in my life, but it just screams Narnia.
Did you see Meryl Streep's playing Aslan? Who the hell is Aslan? The big lion that Liam Neeson played before. That's a representation of God. Yeah, I haven't seen this movie since 2006. Okay. Six or seven. Yeah. Okay. I thought I had another question about Narnia, but... Oh, that's what I said. In the first half year, we haven't got...
It's so funny. The two movies I'm most curious about, we have not got the trailers for. I'm so curious about Narnia, and I'm so curious about Zelda. Because in the couple weeks when we talked about it, they didn't release that movie trailer. And it's like, that movie's out in April. We gotta get... I know we'll have it for sure for Avengers and stuff, but that's... The same thing as Narnia... I feel like Zelda is the same thing where that first trailer has to be perfect. It has to be like, you see this, and every generation of Zelda, the magic is captured. You're like, oh, I've got to be in Hyrule Kingdom. I think if that trailer is a 9 to 8 out of 10, I think it has to be 10, but I think if it's an all-time trailer, billion, easy. Billion in its sleep, Zelda.
Yeah, I'm very curious about that one as well.
We'll see. We'll see what happens there. Yeah, my biggest worry is we get that trailer, and then boom, licensed music. That's my biggest worry is Zelda. Like, if we get licensed music in a Zelda trailer, it's like I'm a god. It's over. It's not great.
Yeah, especially for a series that has such iconic music like that.
But so does Mario, and they went that way. Oh, shit, sorry. Not on the trailers. Fair, fair. They saved it for the movie. So if they're going to do that, save it for the movie. But, you know.
Yeah, I feel like that would tonally work less with Zelda than it does Mario, though.
So we'll see what happens. Anything else before we end this episode, Dylan? Anything else on your mind? No.
Nothing else on my mind. This was a fun app.
Yeah.
Catching up on movies.
I loved it. It's good stuff. Yeah. Hyrule Kingdom, here we come. Yeah, you know what? I'm still mad. It's not in the fucking... Thank goodness for Xbox and some people remembering that, but Still mad that Lion's not in the movie. But no, it was a good episode. Thanks to you to the patrons for asking questions. Gives a whole topic there. And then, yeah, be back on Thursday.
I know there's like a Marvel New York Comic Con panel. So we'll probably talk about that. It's a TV panel. So we'll see what they have to say. But I think we're getting new details on Spider-Man Neighborhood. And then we'll probably do some Vision Quest predictions and whatever else ends up on the menu. Sweet. So we'll see you then.
Until then, we'll be boring. We love you all. Bye-bye.
