Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the very first episode of Batman the Animated Series Retrospective. I am the Clown Prince of Podcasts, Travis Snell, and I'm joined by... I.
Am the world's greatest butler, Kirkland Patzer.
I'm the blimp, Taylor Field.
Yes, here we are. A retro I've been waiting for a long time. We've talked about it. I swear, we talked about this even before podcasts started. Oh, here's all the shows we do. Here's all these things.
Somehow.
X-Men happened first, Spider-Man happened first, some of the Clone Wars happened first. You know, the animated series I want to do the most. It took us 12 years to get here, but we are here. This was supposed to be, and I guess it still technically is, we were starting this in timing for the Batman, because the Batman also, the first, it should have been out a couple weeks ago, the second date, and then it should have been out next year, but then hopefully, fingers crossed, it's still out February 2028. This will be a big build-up to that.
If not, then we're just having a good time and we're building up to whatever the next DCU Batman is. But what's going to happen with this episode is we're putting all these episodes will eventually be on the public feed. This first episode will be on the public feed right now. So it's going to be dropped and then it's good to go. Everything there. Of course, the ad for editions on Patreon. After this, it will be a Patreon, not exclusive, but early exclusive until we record almost all the episodes or all the episodes and then we're going to release them.
We did the same thing with Clone Wars and I think we did the same with X-Men as well, where we're going to release, we're going to record them. We're probably going to record an episode every month, maybe sometimes two. And it's going to be what we're doing today as we've done in the past, usually three to four blocks of episodes. And so, yeah, if you like this, this is your nice little test, your nice little, or taste, not a test. It could be a test. I don't know.
It's your appetizer. It's like, hey, if you like this, we're going to be doing this for the next year or so. Just like X-Men, just like Clone Wars, this is a girthy retro. We're doing this in Batman Beyond. There's a couple movies as well in there, so it's going to be a good time. But we're leading up to Batman. We're leading up to, I thought it was something else Batman related to. Even then, technically, in 2028, Dynamic Duo comes out, which is an animated Batman project.
So if live action doesn't come out, we have that. But that's kind of the rigmarole. And the other rigmarole for this episode, you might be wondering, why are we doing these episodes? I think you can figure it out. We've got pretty smart listeners. Obviously, we're doing the first ever episode on Leather Wings. But then we're doing A Feet of Clay Part 1 and Part 2 episodes. because Clay faces out in two weeks, which we will be reviewing.
So that's why I thought, you know, like, obviously it's a little down the line. As you've guys seen with this show, there is some storylines and some things that continue on, but then there's a lot of episodes that are very much the anthology of, hey, Batman's dealing some fucked up shit, and this is what's happening this week.
So I thought, okay, it's a good two-parter. So that's what we're doing today. We're talking about A Feet of Clay, part one and two. We're talking about On Leather Wings. Kirk and Pats are in Taylor Field. I'm sure they've seen snippets or heard of things.
I've already watched the whole series.
Oh, wow. He thought it was a one episode retro. Like we're going to talk about the entire, the whole week. And he's like, Madison, I got to finish this.
He's got notes, notes for days.
I got 90 episodes and three movies, but, uh, Well, no, you know, Taya, you watched it all. No, but I'll start you, Taya. Taya, what is your.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're passing to Kirkland. I don't want to take this.
It's too late. You budged in front of him. It's too late. You pulled a Matt Hagen. It's only me. It's my role.
All right, guys, good luck with the retro on your own.
I'm done.
Yeah. You're Matt Hagen, and Kirkland was like the... Oh, man, we lost him.
The self-remove.
Those were rare.
Yeah.
Kirkland's like the stunt double or the body double for Matt Hagen there. Just like, come on, Matt, I'll help you out. But Taya Fields. If you have, like, what did you know of the series before? Obviously, I've talked about, you've heard about, we've been doing this for 12 years, so it's not like an unknown, like, this doesn't exist, but, like, from, I don't know, just from the time I'm doing this podcast to now, and then, obviously, save your thoughts for in particular episodes. We'll start with All in the Other Wings, but what did you, about the series, what did you know of it, not know of it, you know? Give us your elevator pitch.
I mean, I feel like I don't know a lot.
You're suddenly Matt Hagen over there.
My only knowledge, I feel like, Obviously, I know there's Batman Forever. That was the other thing that I probably kind of wore up growing up. But when I was a kid, popping in like.
That's the one he picks? I know there's Batman Forever.
Batman Forever. Or no, no.
Because the animated... Is it Batman Forever? That's the animated show? Or what's the one with like.
It's going to be a long year. No, no, no. Thank you, Beyond.
That's the one I was thinking of. Yeah, yeah.
That's fine. This was when you were in the Clone Wars.
Oh, no, this is the.
Okay, so I guess we can show... Yeah, I've been waiting to have this background for years. Oh, did someone delete our... Did someone delete the custom background? Oh, no. Someone made a bunch of new ones.
What?
Who made this? What is this one? I like this.
Oh, this is our Halloween stream one where you and me were in the bottom and Gabe was in the middle.
No, I think this is the way it should be from now on. I think this is the perfect... I'm like Wizard of Oz. Yeah, literally the Wizard of Oz. Yeah, where you guys are like the cock table. But there we go. That's why you watch the video version. No, the glorious. You're going to see this image like 85,000 more times. I guess to preference is.
Batman and Batman 80... Or, sorry, 89 Returns came out. This is... I think it was pitched as, like, let's make, like, an animated show, like, inspired by the Keaton stuff or Keaton, and then it just transformed.
It's got the same score or the same theme or whatever it is. They added, like, the lightning in there. It's the same... We've talked about this, but I listened to it. It's, like, it's the same beats. It has some new decibels in there, but it's the same thing.
This is... I feel like you're trying to do like a vanilla. If this isn't a vanilla ice, David Bowie, Prince or Queens.
If I, if I play this track side by side with the other one, you're going to hear like the Keaton theme. You're going to hear it's very spot on same beats.
I'll say that. Okay. I'll say they're similar, but it's not the same theme. Is it both done by Danny Elfman? Yes. He does not score the whole show. He did the theme. Shirley Walker, who's also great scores the show. They are not the same theme. I, it's like the same way as like, yeah, there's different, like, scores in the dark night but it's like batman joker in.
The same theme you know yeah yeah if.
You want you can pull it up i don't care i'll clip.
It no no i won't do it now i'll i'll clip a i'll save that for episode two when we get to the next oh yeah he'll forget.
Which episode we're doing again um so.
Anyway sorry they made this show as like a spiritual successor to keaton's batman and then batman forever came out but obviously it's his own continuity that's.
Where And Beyond is like a sequel to this.
In a way? Yeah, Beyond we're going to review. Even though we're nowhere near Batman Beyond, it's fun. It's not as long, too, but yeah, that's where Bruce Wayne retires and Terry McGinnis comes in. But it has tons of lore with this show. It's like a legacy sequel before legacy sequels were a thing. It's primetime stuff. Where are we going to watch it? I don't know. It ain't on Netflix, but we'll figure that out in a year.
So yeah, when it comes to this, though, I feel like back in the day when I pop on my... old vhs tapes it'd be like free willy you know the warner brothers projects and then i just get like these play snippets from different things there'd be the snippet of like the joker saying something about like um all those weirdos around or whatever and it was just distinctly like mark hamill's voice is that from this show.
No no you're talking about yes it's from the show i'll just say.
That okay so you know exactly what i mean because those are like sizzle real previews on like the old brothers vhs.
I don't spoil anything so i know the preview yeah.
Okay, yeah, because it was like, I remember that. That's like ingrained in my mind. It was just all the time watching Free Willy and you got Joker saying, oh, those weirdos around.
But that's the extent of it.
When it comes to the show, I have no other knowledge and insight. I really don't know much about any DC animated projects. It's kind of gone under the radar for me.
I guess this is our first one, right? Because we're not promising anything right now. I'm not counting. Yeah, sure. I'm telling the classic era. I'm not promising anything with Superman, but like never know what justice league, when we get that just league movie, the just league animated show is another classic that people hail. Like I like the Superman animated show. I think it's like the lowest out of like, if you had Batman X-Men, Spider-Man justice league and Superman for me, I would firmly play Superman at the bottom, but justice league that fucking slaps. That is some really good shit. So you never know if, if you guys listen, you never know.
Um, so far though, I mean, I, I love what, what we've indulged in, like, holy shit. Uh, yeah and like this just feels like to me like I again I have no pre-existing like with X-Men it's different because when I was when I grew up I was like I'm just not an X-Men fan now I'm born again and so we did the animated show and.
Everything you were a humans of humanity guy yeah apparently we're friends of humanity friends of humanity I was humans of humanity that's a tear he's trying to get us to start he's like guys I got a really good idea for the podcast humans of.
Humanity humans of humanity But when it comes to this, like I said, I have no pre-existing kind of idea for this. But just diving in blindly, I'm eating it up. I'm soaking it up and just biting into the sandwich. And I'm just blown away by the little things that are just juicing. And I watched the Leathery Wings by myself.
And then I watched Clayface.
What was that so-called?
Leathery Wings.
On Leather Wings?
Yes.
Oh, that's the one.
On Leatherweight. This is my time. I had to do a whole year in some Clone Wars just feeling like a fucking idiot the whole time. It's this planet. It's this species. But now, here we go.
I got a good gauge because there are things that I. In this sense, like, there's things that they cover in, like, the Nolan trilogy, names and characters. Like, I messaged you this off-cast because, like, oh, shit, I did not realize that this guy introduced, like, the Clayface stuff, which we'll talk more about, is actually, like, there's a blatant Easter egg reference to this character in The Dark Knight Rises.
I'm like, well, that just makes the movie even more propped up for. me because there's just okay new things that nolan sourced from in the in the material that i had no idea about again i thought that character was made up for for the dark knight rises i had no idea that there's pre-existing history in the the comic books and the narrative with him so that was super cool but we'll break into that later but I'm very much getting stoked on the stuff here that's going to be kind of just teaching me more and shedding more light. You guys did a review for, was it the Amazon Batman?
Caped Crusader.
Yeah, which had a lot of the similar, like Bruce Timm, who was one of the creative forces behind this, was on that. That's a bit more like a mature thing. This was like trying to be on Fox.
Did you do a season two? Was there a season two?
I reviewed season two. Kirkman was, where were you again? You were in Alberta, right?
I was in Alberta.
Yeah, so there's a review out there.
Cool.
But yeah, so far, I mean, this show's awesome. I am loving it.
I'm really excited to kind of steer where we're going with it. I think it's going to be a really fun journey.
90 episodes, you say?
I'll get you that full count. Because technically there's a weird thing, and we're going to get there. So there's Batman the Animated Series, and then there's Batman the New Adventures, where... We'll get there. They changed the art style. So it's the same continuity, but it's the same show, same characters.
I don't want to spoil it. There's something else with the show, too. I'll say there's a gimmick with the show that makes it a little bit different, but same continuity. And then you have three movies. So we got Phantasm. We got Sub-Zero. And then we got The Mystery of Batwoman. And then we got Batman Beyond, which that, I think, is only like 26 episodes. I think they only ran for like two or three seasons, but they're shortened. And that has a movie, but I don't want to say the movie title because that would spoil some things, so.
Cool cool yeah.
The death of batman beyond yeah don't don't google it.
But yeah i'll get that full account for you so uh kirk and pat sir how's it going hey oh.
Hey not bad i'm glad i'm here this has been uh it's been a long time coming i think for this retro series i i've Like it's been years. I probably since like the first Batman, like when we were talking about doing this one day, I feel like that was when the murmurs were kind of, well.
Even technically the very first retro we ever did was the Batman movies, but that was a weird one where it was me. And every time I had a different host, like for dark night, it was you, Jessica, Dylan, and Taylor. And then for Batman begins, it was just Dylan. Cause he had never seen that. So I was trying to introduce some Batman. So I think at one point, even then we're like, Oh, one day we should get around to doing that. But I'll see, we didn't have the time.
or the resources. So I think it's been, and even, yeah, the first time with the Batman, I think we kicked it around. So it's been, it's definitely come up on the, I feel like it's been on, when I've hit you guys with a like a here's a year plan, it's been on the docket, and then it's been kicked a couple times. But no more kicking it now. It's here.
No more kicking it. Yeah, we're just receiving it. And, uh, man, I'm glad I am. Cause this is, this is awesome.
I gotta put Dylan on that camera that I'm not even knowing. What the hell happened? Oh man.
But, um, yeah, no, I, I definitely seen like episodes of this. I couldn't tell you like which episodes, but just like back in the day, this would be on. And, uh, I'd be throwing it on. And, like, there is many different, I think, Batman appearance shows, including, like, Justice League, Batman Beyond. Like, I couldn't follow them when I was a kid. It was just, like, what everyone would be on. I think Batman Beyond, like, stuck with me the most.
I was going to say, Beyond's a very Kirkland-coded show.
Oh, just, like, the look. Like, that just, like, ingrained in my head. I'm like, man, that is such a sleek and badass, like, anime-type look for Batman. And I'm excited to eventually go through that.
But.
yeah, this like being, you know, like it, this just feels like the, like this is the Batman animated show. I mean, it's just called the animated series. So it's right there in the title. And, uh, yeah, just, just right off the hop, like the intro, I feel like it just like sets like, like the certain flavor of what the show is like, like the vibe it's, it's like a kid's cartoon, but like, it just feels up a notch of like more mature. Um, like I, I, it feels like an old era type show. It's funny how I've watched like first season, I haven't seen second season yet of Cape Crusader, but like that is like specifically in like an older era, but like the show still kind of has that feel to it. Um, so
it's kind of interesting having that comparison and like me having my first experience with that show. And then going back to this one is, is pretty, pretty interesting, but just the dynamic with Like, Bruce and Batman, like, that's a really fun parallel to already see in just, like, the handful of episodes that we've watched now. But, man, like, just having Alfred in here, like, he's just such a...
I want to say, like, every Alfred performance that I've seen so far on, like, the live actions, like, yes, it's definitely Alfred. But, like, here, like, the animated version, it's almost like he's... It's almost like he's a cartoon sitcom character. It just seems like he's always just dropping one-liners in any scene that he's in. I imagine he can be like that in the comics for sure. Whereas looking at Michael Caine's Alfred, you really see him as.
A fatherly type.
Yeah, like a fatherly figure right away. Whereas in this one... He just keeps, like, popping in the one specific line. I think it's in Leather Wings. Like, he's just got, like, the giant bat monster, like, on his table. It's just, like, dinner for two.
Like, he just comes in the room, drops one of those.
Like, he's always.
I think there's another one where he's, like, listening to, like, the bat call, like, on the radio, and he's, like, I didn't know you were listening to Heavy Rock or whatever.
He says, too, like, at the start, he's, like, you're throwing people from buildings now, and he's, like, Bruce is, like, particularly butlers, like, he just counters them.
Man, I love their dynamic so much, and that was, like, something I just wasn't expecting at all. Like, I knew Alfred would be in here, but I assumed he would just be doing what he does to, like, help out Batman, but he's more than that on, like, the comedy side. I think, like, the comedy layering in here, like, it's it's there like in like the comic book cartoon type sense but like it's really not what the show is like like it definitely is just a more mature feeling uh show and i don't know like like watching it now that i'm older i feel like man like i'm just growing to really really love the character of batman so much more throughout all the all the material that i've now like gone through in my life like back
in the day when i was a kid i think this would just be like oh, well, he doesn't actually have powers. He's just gadgets. But, like, I just, I don't know. I have an appreciation for that more now as I'm a little bit older. But I think the show fucking collapsed. It's amazing. I mean, we're only going through three episodes now. Yeah, we just started. But, like, I watched, like, the first, like, you know, what we had to watch. And then I'm like, do I just go back to, like, episode two and just fucking watch, like, all of them in here? But then I'm like, ah, I probably won't even remember, like, the specific things that we're going to be talking about here.
But.
I definitely do want to go back and watch more of it. But yeah, it's awesome. I'm glad we're doing it.
Yeah, so for me, I think it's the most overrated Batman thing we have. No, I'm joking. I love the show. This is exactly... I've said this many times, so I'm not getting all along. When I think of Batman, it's what I think of this interpretation. Whether it's Kevin Conroy's voice, this Batmobile's probably my favorite Batmobile. I love... At some point in GVS Studios, whether we can recreate it digitally or practically... I very much want to do some sort of project where the sky is just fucking red all the time. I don't know why it looks like that in Gotham, but it is great, man. There's just something about it where it's like, oh, something's brewing in the city and Batman's out to go stop it and everything.
Like the score, yes, it is like similar to the 89 theme, but then just with Shirley Walker's stuff, like that's where it's different. It has that kind of what they talk about in Caped Crusader and here that, you know, noir detective feel. And again, it's only 22 minutes, all these episodes roughly, but they have still like a, at least these ones we're talking about today, have a good, slow pace to them, but a lot happens in them.
Because I feel like so many times we've talked about shows where they're only 22 minutes and a lot has to happen. I think that is the good thing with a lot of these episodes, which we will continue to talk about. It's Batman, it's a villain, it's a case, and what's he going to do to stop this, right?
Like I said, there is other storylines that come in, but it is more of an almost procedural show that way, where it's okay, what we're doing this week and who we're messing with. And I think that does give some... a lot of room just to let everything breathe and everything just feels so cinematic here. The sounds, the score, the look, everything. So yeah, anytime, man, those opening credits pop up, I'm locked to the TV. This is definitely the show, probably along with Goosebumps, I've seen the most in my life. This is a show that I've watched these seasons too many times to count. Obviously, many times as a kid, I had multiple VHSes taped of these.
So there's some episodes that I'm just burned in my skull. But I watched when I was older. I watched with the kids. Luckily, the kids all like them. Like, every single one we've watched. And that kind of shows where it's just like, okay, this is a 90s show. It started in 95 or something. When did it start? But it still has withstood the test of time as far as just being quality. Some stuff doesn't, you know.
Oh, 92.
So there you go. So it started a year before I was even born. But, yeah, this was definitely... Again, with live-action Batman, I think, okay, there's this guy, that guy, but when I think of, oh, who's Batman? It's Kevin Conroy. When I read Batman, this is what I hear. Obviously, he also did the Arkham games as well, and the Arkham games kind of have a loose connection to this.
I always play it in a way where it's the same continuity because there's nothing that actually goes against it for the most part. I think there's maybe some Robin stuff against it. But even then, it's fine. And yeah, I love this series. So I'm very excited to talk about it. And I'm also just excited to talk about it with you guys because you guys obviously know Batman stuff.
But I think, one, this show obviously is new to you guys for seeing it all the way through. But two, because I think I've been harping on this for a long time, we'll see what happens with the DCU and Gunn. We've had so many in live action stuff. There's not much fantastical Batman. You know, it's like even the, you know, you got the Keaton stuff and the Kilmer and Clooney.
That's fantastical, but it's fantastical in a way where some of it gets a little goofy, right? And then we had Ben Affleck off the Injustice League, but that's very much, he's fighting aliens, he's fighting doomsday, but that's like him on a team. So I'm excited to get to some of these stories where it is just like, okay, why is there a gigantic bat? Why is there a big guy of clay? And it's just bad. And they don't treat it like, anything different. Like, Batman's just like, he investigates this thing, and like, he's just all in the case. Oh, I gotta deal with this bat. Like, even Goran's like, what's going on in the sky? They don't even talk. Like, they talk that it's a big bat, but they like,
it's just they kind of accept it and go, well, I guess it's just another day where we live again. Why does everyone live here? I don't know. The housing has to be great there. It has to be so cheap in Gotham to live anywhere, because why would you be there? I don't know. But yeah, everything about the show is just perfectionist. But if I could get a live-action DCU Batman, this would be like goal of it is okay the the gritty and realistic take and the humor works but also big fantastical stuff that's going on where it is just okay who is this monster so uh let's let me pull up i forgot to do the wikipedia i haven't done a tv show um i haven't done a tv show uh retro in so long i can't remember what the last one was like i
did a vampire but that was only like one seat like i just did like a whole season it's there to answer you though uh it's uh we have In total, we have 163 episodes to talk about. But then there's four movies. So we'll record a total. Obviously, sometimes we'll record four episodes. So we're going to record anywhere from 45 to 55 episodes of this podcast.
Beautiful.
Yeah. So let me. Oh, shit. Because this show is so fucking old. There's like a Wikipedia. It's one of those. Okay. On Leather Wings, a mysterious bat-like creature suddenly appears over Gotham City and Terrorizing both its residents and city's police, Batman soon finds himself accused of being the creature itself, but the Dark Knight suspects the creature is not natural.
His suspicions soon lead to scientist Kirk Langstrom, whose research with his father-in-law has experimented with bats. This was based off of the story Challenge of the Man-Bat, Man or Bat and Marriage Impossible. So if you want to go read some issues... They kind of pulled from three different ones, and that is a big thing with this show. Obviously, it pulls a lot from comic books, but there you go. So, yeah, Taylor Field, I'm going to throw it to you. You're a big fan of cryptids and all these type of monsters and stuff, and I feel you've heard of Man-Bat before, right?
Oh, I know about Man-Bat. There was a time when I had a toy.
Sounds like you had a run-in with him.
I had a toy, and this toy was of Man-Bat. And that was something that was freaky because I just remember it.
Was just a freaky.
It was a freaky-looking action figure.
The wings and everything.
And I remember just like... Yeah, I remember distinctly that action figure. But the whole thing with this character in here is just wild because, yeah, it's very cryptid-like, but the sound threw me for a bloody loop.
Whoa! Oh, you found it.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
Um, but no, it was just, it's, it's crazy. Cause the sound in here was a hundred, like just full hundred.
Like I could, there's.
Something coming from my ceiling. It's the most horrifying sound.
In the world.
And Bruce Wayne's like, what's happening in my house?
Can you tell me?
And his face, too.
It's as if he's trying to see the reaction to it.
Like, man.
Okay, Bruce Wayne's got some fucked up shit at his mansion.
Yeah, no New Year's Eve party at the Wayne.
He's got his eyes wide shut parties.
Going on there.
Eyes wide shit. That's a different type of party.
Like, it's just.
Yeah, he was so nonchalant about it.
Like, holy shit. So casual when he did that. But....
Yeah, I think it was a pretty good starter episode because it's just... Batman's obviously wanted. And the detective who's kind of like... Well, I won't get to the detective. We're talking about Man-Bat first.
No, I just asked for the episode.
Just your overall thoughts, then we'll circle.
It was freaky with Man-Bat, him getting the hair and all the stuff and everything like that.
The fact that it felt like it was within.
The night that he kidnapped him and captured Man-Bat, that he's able to revert him back to his human form, which I'm pretty sure that's fucked. You're not reverting this guy back in a two-hour session.
It's the same thing as Lizard, right? In Spider-Man, they do that to him all the time. Connors?
Lizard, I can believe, but this guy.
What?
Wait a second.
Lizard?
I think they're the exact same wavelength. Lizard grows a whole arm back, and his body turns into scale, and he grows a tail... But he, so you can believe he can be back in two hours. But Manbat, who grows some wings and hair.
This guy's literally a vampire.
So? He doesn't bite anybody.
Yeah, I don't know.
It's just something, there's a line between the two. I draw a line in the sand between the two. I don't know why. But, uh, yeah, he's, uh, He's a terrifying creature and I hope he comes back. I, it's a shame that he's just like a one episode and done, but I imagine that this character will come back because I mean, we got over a hundred something fucking episodes.
Then man bats got to get the juices and pump the juices back into his bloodstream and make a comeback.
I'm sure.
But I say there'll be two episodes. You'd be quite happy with in the future.
Okay.
Okay.
Good.
Remember this in a year and a half. No, we should make the opening for this show.
Yeah.
Come on doctor. Can you take a look at my chimney?
But I like that whole scene too with Bruce when, He's talking to Alfred and he just kind of deduces the fact like, I can't remember the word that Alfred uses, but Bruce Wayne repeats it. And it just kind of deduces like, yeah, oh, they. they lied to me, you know, I thought that they could help because they're experts on this and they lied, you know, he's just so pissed off.
And then he's so self-righteous too. Like no one's going to lie to him, you know, but Hey, when people do, he's going to fuck you up.
You know, one of my favorite things.
And I feel like I haven't, I don't think I've ever seen this in live action, but I love this here because he, he's already dropped the stuff off at the lab and then he's in his Batman suit in the cave.
And then Bruce, uh, uh, Alfred? Thank you.
Alfred's like, oh, you got a phone call. And then he starts talking in his casual Bruce voice. We're in the Batman. So he's like, oh, thanks. I'll make sure I send a big donation for your help. And it's just like, this doesn't sync up.
At all.
And it only happens a few times in the show, I have no truth. Wow, he dropped that point and he was fucking out of here, Kirkland. That was crazy. Gotta go. It only happens a few times. But that's what I do love about Kevin Conroy. Where, of course, you hear the Wayne voice, you hear Batman. Yeah, it's the same guy. But there is a big, distinct difference between the two. And I think it's really impressive. I do have a fact for in the movies when it's a reverse, but I'll save it for when Taylor gets back.
But no, that's the greatness of Kevin Conroy. But Kirkland, I was going to say, Maybe you saw him on this show, but I feel like you had to recall a big memory, a core memory of Man Bat in your childhood. If not, I'll remind you.
If not, you'll remind me.
Interesting.
One day I was there. I had a big Batman.
Yeah, like, right.
I mean, I feel.
Like I remember what the character looked like, but I feel like he was from some other project that wasn't Batman, but.
Oh, no, it's from Batman, I think.
It is from Batman.
Okay, so I'm going to take you back to, I'm going to say, I think it's 2010. Arkham City releases. I don't know if you remember. if you get far, like, it happens at some point where when you're just gliding through the city, and that just grabs you, yeah, there's no mention of Man Bat, you're not looking for Man Bat, it's just like, oh, someone's been attacking this building, and you go to that side quest, and as you're just, like, gliding around, he just grabs you, and huge jump scare, and then that would happen continually throughout the game, that was one, and I've told this story before, when I got Arkham City, it was midnight, and I was playing it, scared, I, like, 3M, 4M on Xbox Live, my friend Jeff scared the fuck
out of me, like, man bat just getting to you so that's why for me that's like man bat around comic scene shows but that for me is a core memories arkham city that jump scare man because that was uh that was a great moment so i was like oh no kirkland's has to.
Remember that so oh absolutely i mean that came but i'm pretty sure i was playing like with my cousin when that happened i think i was like watching him play or like i just remember we reacted like together uh in that moment but i mean just that scene alone like it's such a great like representation like what this character is of like where batman is like he's just like terrorizing or terrorizing terror he's terrorizing the citizens of gotham this terrifying thing for like like the villains of gotham and then you have this thing that's like could even be hunting batman like it's just a it's a fun dynamic and the fact that like the public's perception especially from like the criminal's of like Batman isn't
just a man like he is this like fucking shadow of like something he's the Baba Yaga and like you have this like actual monster it's like yeah that's Batman like that is what people would be thinking he is I think that's I think that's awesome I think that makes the character or sorry the villain rather like that.
Much what the fuck are you playing scared the hell out of me that's the that's the craven the hunter song from the movie it fits in here yeah it's.
In here um but uh but yeah no overall i i thought it was a really fun villain to have in here i like the investigation of um like like it's happened in the known films before probably multiple times and as well as other batman medias i'm sure but like when he goes to the lab to like investigate it and then they call the cops on him and you can just like hear the sirens coming but he's just like he's just got to like solve this mystery so he's just like doing his investigation like i just love that like intensity of the scene where like the sirens are getting louder and louder but like he's still just like looking for the you know he's getting the little man bat pubes um for for sampling to get
identified and amongst other things and Him just being that detective is obviously an amazing quality for the character of the Batman. But in this episode in particular, I thought it was really fun how he's balancing that. I like the monster aspect of what he's dealing with. I like that he's being chased. People think that he is this man-bad villain thing. So yeah, overall, I thought it was really, really great. I also like the reveal. How it is...
I thought it was going to be like the doctor, because he looks like a fucking Batman.
Like the dad? Like the father-in-law? Because they set it up... He's kind of like the red herring, like the older gentleman, and then it's like the younger one.
Like the scientist guy. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Well, they're all scientists, right?
I mean, the guy that doesn't... He's not wearing a suit. He's the only one that's not wearing a suit, right? He's like this fucking.
He's got a lab coat. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, I guess so.
Sneedling looking man. But yeah, I like that twist. I like how he just... He's like... What does he say when he comes to the room? He's like, I've been expecting you, Batman. Just like the full-on villain reveal. I actually liked that scene. It was really, really well done.
When he's walking through the chemicals and his face is changing and all the stuff's going on. It's like, oh, yeah.
Yeah, it was awesome. So all of the man-bad stuff in that episode I thought was fantastic. It was a really fun first episode jumping into this animated series.
Well, when you're mentioning the Bond villain, that's what I was going to say. I feel like Alfred will talk about that more. He reminds me a lot more of Q in this series of like kind of a helper. There is kind of a reason you'll find out why he is that way. Uh, cause I feel like they maybe could have had a closer relationship, but Bruce is, uh, this Bruce is a little cold at times. So I think he's just like, okay, this will, he needs like some, this Batman needs some heart. He just needs some goodness in his life here. I'm just going to do this. Like, uh, I guess the way that, it's not even a spoiler, I just almost feel like, you know how Michael Caine talked back to Batman in Dark Knight Rises? I feel
like this Batman might kick the shit out of Alfred, you know, like he might just, like he's scared of this man. Maybe he would just put him out, like choke him to death, or not, sorry, not to death, like just to sleep. But Taylor, I was going to say, I don't know. So somebody at any point, let me know if I, like the answer for this, you're talking about the voices of Batman with the mask talking as Bruce Wayne. I don't know if that's happened, but can you name a time where it's been the reverse? Where Bruce Wayne has not had the mask, but he's talked as Batman.
Where he's talked as Batman? Yes, I can.
He's searching the internet right now. Put your hands up.
You say specifically just the Batman cowl? Because he can wear something else over his face?
Oh, maybe.
Because there's two instances.
There's Dark Knight Rises with Jim Gordon in the hospital room.
Where he's wearing a suit and he's just got a.
Ski mask on.
Oh, I did forget that one, right.
And then he's got, I would.
Say probably when he does like, he jumps out of Gordon's office and the Batman begins.
I'm not counting that because he's like kind of in an outfit.
But I'd say the other one in the hospital for sure.
Okay, the hospital, I didn't even think of this. That's right. The one I was thinking of is Dark Knight Rises when he finds, when the parade's happening and all those cops are tied up and he took the bike and remember he, the cops, they're all taped or whatever and he takes the guy's tape off. He's like, then there's cops you know like and so yeah so people let us know I'm trying to think I don't know if it's happening live action though with the mask and talking as Bruce I don't think that happens you know like because someone might throw George Clooney at me but it's just because he doesn't do a voice he just talks the exact same but no I think this is a great first episode if people are wondering too other than
the feet of clay we are watching it in the recorded episode length because when this show originally aired they aired it out of order so sometimes they air part one and then you have to wait weeks to get part two It was really fucked up. But yeah, we're not watching it that way. We're not watching it in the chronological order. We're not watching it in the... Why do they do that in animated shows? Clone Wars did that.
Batman did that. Why do they just feel like, you know what? We really want to fuck with these kids. Let's see if they're paying attention. So we're going to put part one all the way over there. Luckily, Netflix has it organized in the right way right now. So that's good. I don't know about when we get to that later stuff. But no, I think this is a great introduction episode. You introduce a huge threat in Man Bat.
You introduce a situation where he has to be a detective. Yeah, to Taylor's point, is it a big jump for him just to get the... He's like, oh, I think I got all the plans. I can revert him back. Listen, I do love Batman. I do believe he's a guy who can do anything. It's just like night one, he's like, oh, I got all the schematics. Yeah, I can fix this guy.
Maybe I'd be better with him and some other doctor, but just him alone. Okay, sure. But I feel like you get a big threat. You get the detective side. You get lots of great action. You get both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and you also get to establish how Gotham feels about Batman. And then you get, which again, hopefully this podcast is leaning towards Batman too, a trope, a sweet goodness in my life. Anytime the cops are after Batman, that's chills right there. Anytime the police are like, we got to fucking get him. I love when Batman's taking on cops. And this episode, it felt like he was like, police brutality. Like, he was not hurting them, but man, did he put a lot of them to sleep.
I could not believe how many gas pellets he was busting out on this episode, but any time, and I like that too, not just like Harvey Bullock was always like, oh, fuck Batman. I like when it's like, hey, this guy's been around, and now all of a sudden, there's innocent people saying there's a bad guy attacking them. And as the public, as the police, who else would you think of, right?
If there's a guy named Batman, and he's been around, and I don't know, I should find out if there's a time how long he's been active in Leather Wings. uh, the Google, I'm sure we'll find something, but, um, that's where it's like, yeah, why wouldn't this guy, why wouldn't it be Batman? So like, even though Bulk's kind of a dick, he has every right in this sense to do that.
Right.
So I think it's just like a perfect first episode where it gives you a bit of everything in the Batman mythos that you kind of love and are, you know, love you enjoy this character. So, uh, yeah, really good episode. And I'm excited to talk about any specifics here, but, uh, I'll throw you, cause you were, I think Harvey Bullock you were wanting to talk about, right? Before the overalls?
Yeah, and I was getting him confused because I thought he was... I don't remember the guy's name in Batman Begins. But he just had that same energy.
Oh, yeah. He's a Bullock knockoff.
For sure. Or Slash.
He was not Slash. He's not Detective Slash, for sure. Detective Slash? But yeah, I thought when that movie was coming out, Begins, I thought that was Bullock, but it's not. And really... We haven't really gone Bollock. We got Bollock in the Gotham TV show.
Flass.
See, I was thinking Slash. Detective Arnold Flass.
Not Flask? It's Flass?
Flass. F-L-A-S-S.
I remember Gordon just yelling that name.
Flass.
Flass. Yeah. And then the other guy, too. Remember in 89? Oh, who's the guy? He's the guy that's working with Joker, and he's shady, and he gets shot, and he's like, And Joker's like, but think of the future. And he kills him. And he's like, oh.
Is he like the long hair guy who's really like his number two?
No, that's Joe the Goon.
Oh, Joe the Goon.
That's Joe the Goon.
Johnny the Elf.
Oh, hang on. Batman 89.
Joe the Goon.
That's the adult version of Johnny the Elf. He grew up to be.
Sorry, it's not Joe the Goon. It's Bob the Goon. Sorry, Bob the Goon. Joe Chills. Let me see.
Joe's cousin.
I'll find him. Oh, Eckhart. That's who it is. Eckhart. Do you remember this guy at all from Batman 89?
Isn't that the fucking Satan's son from Ghost Rider?
Okay. First of all, Kirkland was right with Aaron Eckhart with Two-Face. But this guy in Batman 89, remember he... Hang on.
Of course, it's a picture of Aaron Eckhart.
There you go.
No, no.
This guy, though. This one right here. This guy?
Eckhard. Max Hard.
Is his name Eckhard?
Oh, it is Eckhard.
Yeah.
But so this guy is a kid. For the long term, I thought he was Bullock as well. And he's not. Why don't the movie... Why didn't they make him and Flash Bullock... It's a shady type of cop, and it's so funny.
Go to that picture on the left there.
This one?
Yeah, what is going on?
Is he getting shot there? Yeah, that's when Jack Nicholson shoots him. Think of the future! Because he's a dirty cop, but he tries to sell out Jack Nicholson, and of course, Jack gets a hold of it. There is rumors that Ryan Tyler Henry might be Harvey Bullock, but there's also rumors he might be Harvey Dent. Maybe we're getting Bullock in Batman 2. I don't know, but yeah, Bullock gets...
And you'll see, he's in the show a bunch, but he's not been a much live action stuff at all really it's kind of it's odd but anyways where were you going with uh bull like you brought him up for a reason.
Yeah he just reminded me of flas uh just from and i i thought that they were the same character i thought they were one of the same but they are not um but i i liked how he like he doesn't strike me as corrupt yet i'm sure we'll get around to that but he obviously he's much more like go-getter and he's just i love how.
He's like i'm sorry No, go, go, go, go. I was going to say, his drawing style makes him a villain, I feel. Makes him a villain, yeah. The way this guy talks, the way this guy's drawn, I'm like, man, this is the most villain-looking villain.
I think he's the guy in your life that's voting for the really bad policies, and you know they're not a bad guy, but they're just like they're they've they've gone down too many facebook algorithms and you're like oh.
What's going on ridiculous shit like yeah like i don't i don't i don't i think bullock has maybe been dirty but i don't think this version is i think he's he's an italian so i'll say i think that's the way he is i think he's uh uh but i think he always he's always meaning.
Well it's just that uh he's a little hot-headed you know so and he thought he thought doctors were gonna be killed you.
Know well and again i he did i loved when gordon calls him out he's like oh we got the batman here and gordon's like you know it was a guy just broke into a pharmaceutical place over there you know and then his face just dropped but as soon as the gunfire went off he just was back in it he's like oh well then who's in here um but yeah he just kind of gets uh He gets pushed to the sideline. I'm excited to see more of him because the last we saw of him, I think he was just using the helicopter. Like, Gordon takes his chopper and then he, like, jumps in there.
Yeah.
That was the last I remember him after that.
I fucking love Gordon's voice so fucking much in this show. It's like, obviously, Batman's number one, but I love Gordon's look. I love his voice. I love everything about him. He's fantastic. And lots of great voice acting, but the Gordon voice, I'm a big fan of. Yeah. But yeah, Harvey Bullock, you'll get to know him well. He'll be around. He'll be up to shenanigans throughout.
Nice.
Cool.
Yeah.
Where do we want to go next? You guys already talked about don't throw criminals out of windows, just only butlers. But yeah, Man Batch, just take it, people. Just throwing them, hurling them out.
Taylor, it was funny when I was watching this, my first episode of Animated Series, and The man bat character made me think to my first ever appearance on Cryptid Clues. We covered the Ahu or the Awuhu. I can't remember which one it was, but it was basically like a man bat type cryptid. I think it was in the Indonesian region.
The Ahul, yes.
The Ahul. That's what it was. There you go. And then, of course, when he plays the audio, I'm like, oh, my God, this is like a cryptids episode. So, yeah, I was feeling nostalgic.
That's a good shout out.
I like that.
Yeah.
Anything else in particular on this first episode here?
The aesthetic. I mean, you guys already spoke to it. But again, you got blimps.
You got weird vehicles and buses and shit. Like, it's just such a unique design aesthetic here.
I really like it.
Yeah, and that's similar to the 89 Batman. It's like that Art Deco thing. But that's what I love. It's the noir-like. you know it feels like it should be older but it's also in present day so and that's what I again Incredibles yeah Incredibles and this isn't the same like the Batman Matt Reeves Batman has a different look but that's what I loved about his stuff where it's like present day but lots of Batman's tech feels like really old and janky like I love when you can kind of in Blade Runner that's another example too of like all the the the tech looks like a little little off so but yeah this definitely Incredibles is a good show as far as a comparison Yeah.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Did you ever play the Superman game back in the day where it was like that aesthetic too? I can't remember.
It was N64, I think, right?
I had it on the GameCube.
Oh, it was GameCube? Okay.
It might have been on other.
I think I played a little bit. They also had a Batman GameCube one too, Batman Vengeance.
Shadow of the Apocalypse.
No, I don't think I ever played that.
Shadow of Apocalypse. It had like this type of aesthetic though, which....
Yeah, well, yeah, like, obviously, was it based off the animated show, you think?
I think so, yeah.
Okay, yeah, because obviously Superman is like that, but obviously much more brighter and a bit more bigger, but, yeah, no, I think there's fun, good, you know, little red herrings. I don't think at any point we did not think it was that guy, but, you know, some good fight sequences. The sequence in the sky with Batman is great with Man-Bat, and they're flying everywhere, and even the first shot of, it's just Scott, like, they're showing you Gotham, and then it's just the shadow of Man-Bat, like, just going to town oh no I didn't play it but that's yeah that is the animated show for sure that's the one that yeah.
Super fucking hard game I remember like not being able to beat like the first level but uh.
Damn that's tough alright as we do on these what are the thumbs if you don't know we got the two thumbs down we got the thumb down so the uh you know the Emma Frost we got the middle we got the thumb up you know the two thumbs that's what we do on animated episodes so what do we got Whoa, Kirkland was scaring me there.
Whoa. Okay, a reptile.
You got the, I should, oh no, I should have got the, with this, the double thumbs, yeah. There we go. And like I said, I have a fun thing we're going to do with these, so stay tuned for the end of this episode. Feet of Clay. Part 1. Matt Hagen, a skilled actor, is forced by Roland Daggett. I guess he's forced, but like he's a willing force, I don't know, to help him eliminate executive Lucius Fox so he can take over Wayne Enterprises. Hagen is forced to receive an addictive face cream known as Renew, which can temporarily restore his disfigured face following a car accident years ago. Eager for more, he attempts to steal cream until Daggett's men force feed him The stuff as punishment. Kirkland, what do
you think about, what's your history of Clayface? And what do you think about this episode? Also with the movie coming out, this is part one we'll talk about, but, uh, yeah. What do you think about this?
Like, I, I, I remember like the imagery Clayface, like, I feel like he's just like, um, he's got, he's got a memorable face, uh, as ironic as that seems just like, especially like this version, just the way that it's drawn. It just seems like a, you know like a big monster type character he's got the name clay face like it's just in my mind like very like iconic but like not to the extent that he's like an s plus character but just you know like his imagery at least is is memorable and is probably a better way to phrase it i think he was in arkham city right.
Yes he has a big he has a big role in the finale of that game Oh, yeah.
Actually, there you go. I forgot about that. So that would have been the most, like, where I, like, learned kind of what the character was. But I feel like ever since then, it's been a wild ride of, like, I see, like, the video game version, and then I watch, like, Harley Quinn and, like, his character in there is just so ridiculous. And I love it. Like, it's hilarious. But, like, you know, it fits the, just what that show is.
And then I have the live action movie that's coming out. I'm watching those trailers. That's just fucking disturbing me already. And then we got this now.
And Creature Commandos. Don't forget about Creature Commandos where he's playing Xbox. Oh, yeah.
The Xbox guy, which is the same as the live action movie, right?
That's what they tell us. That's what they tell us. Thanks, James Gunn.
So, I mean, it's kind of fitting because he's supposed to be like an actor that can fit like any role. And I feel like he's played so many roles already throughout the different medias that they've done with him. So that's kind of funny there. Uh, but I, I think it's pretty awesome, uh, in, in the sense of like, he's not just, okay, I'm mad at the world and I have these powers. So that's why I'm going to like take people out. Like, I do like this idea of him being just an actor. And then he gets into this predicament where he's, he, you know, we've seen many times the past where he maybe gets in, in, in with some bad guys that he's like forced to do jobs for, to like keep, you know, his like his legit job going, but then he's like getting roped
down into this. Um, This is another episode, dude, that it's just like, man, this is like, it's not like it's not for kids cartoons, but like, it's definitely like a 0.5 up on like, if I'm watching like Spider-Man.
We'll throw Taylor next on that topic.
If I'm watching like Spider-Man, I feel like this is not in the same like rating as pretty much any of like, even like the darker stuff of Spider-Man, whether it's like with Venom, I feel like some of like the reptile stuff is kind of creepy too with Spider-Man, like with Lizard, but I digress. Because, like, especially, yeah, when they're, like, just dumping it on his face. Okay, I see somebody just.
Like, that's fucked up. Like, that's what I'm expecting the live-action movie to have.
Let's just say I often send that clip to Emily, but in a different... Fucking sound. It was, when did I save this? Let me see when I save this. This was... January, so March last year, March 3rd, 2025. Again, I was just watching the animated series. I know we were reviewing it at some point, but I'm watching it and Emily's beside me and that clip's happening. And we just look at each other and we're like, is that really in the show? Like one, like killing him, but the sound effects also sound like that man is just taking the biggest cock he's ever, like the biggest, uh, item that Kirkland showed earlier you could find.
Yeah.
What's his other clip to the next? Did someone put a new clip in?
I don't know.
It has zero seconds on it.
Yeah. Did you put it on? Did you do that, Kirkland?
Is that what it is?
No, I didn't. I didn't.
Okay.
Is there a way to play it?
I'm not going to click it.
Last night I was....
Dad, where were you last? It's so funny. Oh, jeez. Alright, we'll stop, we'll stop. Those three are a deadly combo. Oh, jeez. The, oh, Jesus, the last nine. Oh, those are a deadly combo.
I can't remember where I was, but yeah.
Clayface, some of the Clayface.
Two-parter.
You were talking about it was two.
I think it's worth the two-parter, too.
You were talking about how it felt older than it would be for a kid, like that moment there.
Yeah, yeah, there you go. Like the maturity of this episode in particular. And I imagine... that's a lot of the series overall yes which probably makes it even that much more enjoyable if you are a little bit older like i am now but uh yeah i thought it was awesome i feel like you are like you feel for the guy in this but like from the get-go like he's already kind of clay face and i feel like he's already kind of doing shady stuff obviously when he's like introduced so it's not like the perfect representation of like you should be rooting for this guy but Like, I don't know if you even should be because I haven't seen.
Well, he's a Batman villain, right? And that's where it's just like, you know, we'll get.
Circumstance that makes him a villain, right? Like, that's kind of the vibe that I was getting from at least the trailers for the live-action movie.
Yeah, it's a chosen circumstance here, though, right? Because he's still choosing to put on this stuff and then go down that path. And that's where, again, we'll talk about it in two weeks. I'm interested, curious, and scared. I do think this is, like, before Taylor goes, I think this is, like, a perfect representation of why... it scares me so much of a Clayface movie without Batman. Sure, you can cut to, oh yeah, he appears in there or something. I doubt that's going to happen. But if it does, it's clearly not a Batman movie, right? And that's where Mike Flanagan, he wrote his script based off these two episodes. He loves these two episodes. And that's when I watched this. I go like, yeah, same thing
as the Man Bat episode. I would love it. I know so many of these movies have to be big and grandiose, but look at what we kind of just got with Brand New Day. Other than the setup of Jean Grey, It's like him fighting street criminals, right? I would love it if, whether it was Matt Reeves or James Gunn, it was just like, hey, this movie is just, it's going to be an hour and a half, two hours, you know, probably wouldn't be an hour and a half, but still two hours, and it's just Batman fighting Man-Bat, or it's fighting Clayface, right? I'm not saying what Matt Reeves is doing is bad, not at all, but I'm just saying, like, the Clayface movie, that's where it's like, oh, I want that, but I want, like, With Batman and
the Batman version, and that's where I've always said that's what I hate, is once we get this Clayface movie, you're never going to get a Batman movie. Or not never, but in this DCU, you're not going to get a Batman movie where he's going to figure it out and do all this. Lots of Batman movies and Spider-Man movies, half those movies are the villains' origins and seeing where they came from. So I think if you could take some of the Clayface movie and turn it into a Batman movie, it's right there. It's like back in the day after X-Men Last Stand. At one point, they were making a Charles Xavier movie and they were making a Magneto movie. And then they had the bright idea of like, we should just put these together. And that's how X-Men
First Class was born. It's like, well, these maybe on their own can't sustain. What if we find this way to make this the origin of the X-Men? So that's why I just like, I'm very curious what's going to happen with that movie. And that's where in my, it's almost, I'm more prepared for this one. But it feels a lot like the Rez movie for me where it's like, oh, I love those games. And that's why I was expecting it more. And it's like, okay, what we got was not exactly that. Luckily, I don't think that's going to happen here. I'm kind of expecting a flashback. I don't know, a fine movie, but that's where the core of this episode, which I think makes it so strong. And again, it's funny.
I didn't even mean to do this, that we did the first episode was, oh, it was the public's against Batman. And in this two part is the public's against Bruce Wayne. So I, you know, I, I forgot that element of it. So like, oh, that's like a fun, like role reversal there. And, which is great. Cause the second you see Bruce Wayne, you're like, Oh, this guy's not fucking Bruce. Like, Hey Lucius, how's it going? And he's fucking like old Greg in the cave. Like he still sounds like Bruce Wayne, but it's like, I bought it.
He did.
Okay. The kids did too. So there you go. Um, but, uh, yeah, our first point, uh, appearance from Lucius Fox, who's in the series, not like as much as like the Noel and stuff, but he is around. Um, you know, I think this is a, this is a great two parter. Um, yeah, I, I, if I had to, say which it's interesting because I feel like it is a two-parter but they feel distinctly different because part two I think is way more of the action comic book because that's when he's in full clay face mud form right and there's fighting and he's like making weapons where the first thing is way more of a detective you know oh it's Bruce Wayne okay who framed Bruce Wayne who did this who's dang it all that stuff so I kind of like that when
you have this two-parter which was 44 minutes okay first half first part you're gonna have some action but that's more so setting up the detective tale and setting up can like who is doing this and why and then part two is oh you're just gonna get a bunch of uh you know crazy uh you know um i don't know designs from clay face and uh and even then you feel so i i feel like they do a good job of i'm never rooting for him but i feel somewhat sympathetic to him but i'm still waiting for batman to lock him up you know so Um, but, uh, Taylor, you were, uh, Kirk was talking about being, this may be too mature for, uh, kids and whatnot. How was, uh, how was watching this, uh, your household?
Oh, I, I mean, you get that scene of, yeah, just like him guzzling down the, we were, we were.
Good up until that point.
And then when Satine saw that, I, even I was taken aback, like, what the fuck?
Like, especially cause they don't have to do that. They have them dead to rights. He's like, Oh, you want some more cream? Let's give him more cream. And they open his mouth. But like, they could just shoot them. They could just literally execute them there. They don't have to, especially to like, isn't this like a waste of the product?
You know, like, I don't know. Let's send a message.
So, but I, I mean, it's in retrospect, like I I'm, I'm cool with it now, but yeah, for a kid's show, it's like, man, I'm just a different caliber of kid back in the day watching these shows.
Right.
Um, And even then, like, with part two, when you have, like, Batman, like, flicks on all the different, like, personas that he played over the years, and then he just starts, like, fucking tweaking out and, like, shifting it over.
From the between.
It's like, this is just gross and grotesque. But I, again, I enjoyed it.
My history with Clayface, like, I really don't know a lot beyond, I guess, Creature Commandos and seeing him in there. And then my first experience would have been playing... batman this is on um this is on game boy advance it was batman the rise of sinzu oh we've.
Talked about that yeah i love that i play the game on so many road trips yeah.
So sinzu man.
Fucking made up he's like a like almost like a rosa cool knockoff but he's uh he they made him up but oh.
This is the this is the battle you have Oh, shit.
And it was great.
I remember this like it was like yesterday playing this battle. And then he like pulls out the different like moves like his blade hands and stuff like that.
This is Taylor playing right now.
He's live streaming. Yeah, this is me. I'm live streaming.
Look at that. He turns around and I'm like, let's get the claw.
It was just such a– like stuff like this was just like.
The bee's knees.
Oh, yeah.
No, that's great.
Yeah, but– yeah, no, my– My history is limited to that and then I guess the Arkham game too.
So I didn't really know anything else.
And Lego Batman. He's in a couple of those games too.
Lego Batman, yeah.
Although I never played a lot of the other ones aside from the newest one. That's like the main heavy one that I've played the most of. But when it comes to everything around Clayface, like Daggett, I had no idea that this character was the same character. I had no idea that Daggett from Dark Knight Rises was the Daggett involved with making Clayface. And so now that those two are connected, I'm just thinking, holy shit. I like it even more because now in the Dark Knight Rises, that means Clayface is a factor in that universe somewhere out there.
That's who Joseph Gordon-Levitt's fighting in Batman 4.
Yeah, totally unprepared. for someone like that.
Zero training. Here's the keys to the car. First villain up. First guy in the suit just turns the car. He's like, I'm not fucking built for this, man. I'm not ready.
But I love that kind of world building. That is super juicy. So I'm super stoked to see this character come back.
Which is funny. Yeah, I think less so for him. I don't know how much you're going to see Day. I think he's around, but I don't think he's one of your top key ones. It's funny, though, that in that movie, he's trying to take over Wayne Enterprises, and what's he trying to do here? He's trying to, like, investor, or insider training, take over Wayne Enterprises.
I think he says, like, specifically, yeah, like, I'm going to take over Wayne Enterprises.
Yeah, so it's like, Nolan watched one episode of the Batman series, like, yeah, we're going to dag it, do that, but yeah, played by the great, oh, God, why am I forgetting his name?
Matt Anderson.
Ben Middleton, your boy there, you know?
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Thanos.
Or no, fuck, what's his name? Not Thanos, Jesus Christ.
What's his name?
What's his Skrull name?
I can't remember what's like, kill them off. I know his daughter's name.
It's got a heavy title. It's like, yeah, fuck.
Yeah, it's like Tarek or Tarek.
Yeah.
It's got a, it's not a drogue.
It's because fucking Secret.
Invasion, man.
Talos. Secret Invasion was so bad, we tried to wipe that from her mind other than gaia and you know and the clark with the you know the batista arm everything else is everything else is gone for that show so um but uh yeah no it's a two it's a great part two great two-parter love the design here and just the attacks love the plates my favorite attack in this uh show is at one point He slams Batman up to the wall, and then he just leaves a big claw of him wrapped around there, and then he lets go of his hand, and he brings it back.
So there's just a big clay hand, got Batman pinned to the wall. It's great stuff. And when he's moving it back, you hear like, it's like, oh, man, that doesn't... It's not.
Quite the same sound effect.
No the sound effects though and like it's just kind of like pivot here too like with his fucking bat plane that he has in here i don't.
Know if it's the bat jet or what do you call this one the bat.
Wing like god damn it was making some ufo aerial sound effects and i was loving every second of it just like even when like the guy thinks he got gets away he's driving like in the underground tunnel and then you hear them on the outside even i'm starting to panic like.
This guy's coming for you yeah That was scary.
Like, like, I don't know what he thought. Like Batman just backs off. It's like, there's end to this title. Like, like he can get to the other side, but I love that. He doesn't even like, he's not like waiting there. He, he, that was going in the tunnel to get them. And the interrogation tactic Batman takes to stab the vehicle with the prongs of the batwing and fly him out of there.
And then once he's out of the car, what does he do? He just has like a robotic batwing thing, holding his arm, dangling them over the fucking water. Um, I had to ask you because we were watching this again. Emily was there. She wasn't feeling right about this, but I said, you know, it's Batman. He can do anything.
How did you guys feel about him dropping in the pool? I felt like he's going to survive. Batman knew he was doing it. I was like, those pools are usually five feet deep. I'm like, well, you know, we don't know it's a big pool. No, he won't die. He was unconscious, though, as well, too.
You both watched the movie.
But the cops were there, like, instantly.
They were, yeah. That's what I thought.
You watched the movie with Chris Pratt, right? What was it?
That alien time travel movie? Remember when they come out into the future and they land in the pool?
Oh, Skyscraper. Tomorrow War. Tomorrow War. Yeah, it's the exact same thing.
Yeah, but not to remember that scene.
Batman drops him in there.
Yeah.
How do you remember that specific scene?
I don't know.
I got weird shit, man. Just, it's there.
Have you seen the movie only once as well? Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
And even then, obviously... one of my favorite things that happened does, uh, the interrogation here. And then earlier when he's like, Oh, this is like whatever. I don't know what he said, but it's like skin fucking eating acid. And he puts it on top of the counter and he's banging, like, tell me who it was. Tell me.
And then of course, and I guess like seaweed water collection, but that, that's the Batman. I like again, the bat wing. That's probably a bit more risky. Cause like, sure. Maybe he falls out and they'll claw and then he's gone, but he's still over just the water. Right. He was just taking a minute. I like that where he just, And Terry, at the point where he got unconscious, the man's like, oh, fuck, like, I can't do anything to this guy. Now he's passed. I'm going to go throw him in a pool. And yeah, the cops were there and, you know, got him. So I wanted to bring this up because I couldn't believe this scene here. It's when we're talking about Lucius Fox at the beginning. I have to mention, too, at one point when he goes to
visit him in the hospital, that blue turtleneck.
Oh, okay, sorry.
I know what you're talking about. The blue turtleneck, I was loving. And I also loved that scene. You don't know for sure if it's like the real Bruce or not because he just like, he comes from the window, which like Batman would come from the window, but you don't know for sure. But this scene, how's Lucius Fox not dead? To set up, he's running away. Someone snipes the sign that says platform and watch how it....
Oh, yeah, you're bugging me.
I know.
You're a paraplegic at this point.
But like that scene was so ridiculous because the guy's like running. That's how they take him out they just fucking like do the um what's the what's the vision from red dead redemption when you just go like yeah dead eye like literally he just hits both of the fucking like the aircraft wire that's holding up the sign.
Yeah and but like the way the way his body he's moving his body but the second he gets hit his body turns to cement which is fine he's moving yeah His spinal cord should be severed. Like he, he should be done, but no, he's, uh, he's still alive. So, but yeah, I thought he.
Would die in that scene. I'm not going to lie. I was kind of shocked, especially just because, you know, Morgan Freeman, Lucius Fox, that's who I had in my head. And then like, this is the whole scene of Lucius Fox is just him getting had. And then, like everybody like pulls their guns on him too. And they're like, give us the case. And then he like pulls the case and like the handle breaks off. I'm like, man, he's getting shot here, but then they don't shoot him.
They shoot for the fucking sign and just take them out.
Well, they just want to stop. They didn't want to kill him. They just want to paralyze them. They just want to send a message to Wayne enterprise, but yeah, brutal. That injury has to suck big time for, Oh, but hopefully Wayne enterprises has that, uh, covered but um yeah at that point too bruce wink does get arrested in this episode at the hospital remember he uh the cops find.
Well and after the fact because and that's fucking hilarious because he gets back and alfred's like you know the cops keep ringing again he's like what and he looks at the newspaper and the the article he's like what is this all about he's totally oblivious to this.
Which, there's no fucking way. Like, I get that he's Bruce Wayne, but one, like, I can believe they're calling, sure, but there's no way they'd be printing, like, the police are looking for, like, they would've went to his house once to bin light, and it, like, either, like, Alfred's there, so you should be like, hey, while you're gone, the cops are here and they want to talk to you, and then, like, go clear this up. But even then, like, I guess he didn't go to clear it up, right?
He found out about that, and then he goes back to be doing Batman stuff, and then he goes to the hospital to visit Lucius, right? He doesn't go downtown as, like, all right, boys, let's talk it out. I did not do this. And I guess he's taking the approach that he's just worried that they're going to arrest him no matter what. Cause like everyone keeps saying Bruce Wayne was there, but no, that was a good shout out to, I do love. He just, he just looks down on, like he's a wanted man, but Bruce Wayne's a wanted man by the police. He's going to get arrested for like a bunch of illegal shooting. Like what's going on? Why is my, why is my name in the paper? But, uh, you know, I guess they, uh, Because he got off
on bail. They attack, like all the media attacks him. He's got a full Tobey Maguire moment going on, but he keeps it in. Everyone's blocking the car. And then I think, oh, right, that's what clears him is at the end when Clayface is turning into all the different performances. Of course, when all the cops are at the door, he turns into Bruce Wayne. He's like, that looks just like Bruce Wayne. So thank God they did or they would have just thought Bruce Wayne was still just out there.
But yeah, that's what happens. He's trying to get more cream. He's getting too much. This accident... I don't know what happened to that accident.
His face is.
His name is Scar. It just looks like it's been punched in a bunch of times, which I guess could have happened, but he's doing that. He wants to have his acting career. Obviously, he turns into Big Fiend Clay. And the appearance of Clay, when his friend finds him and touches his hand, just the handprint, and his hands melt out of the car. That's all good stuff. That's where I'm like, oh, I hope they can recreate some of the stuff in the movie. I'm interested to see what they take from this, because clearly... In this show, and that's what I love about it, is part two, okay, he's all Clayface. Where in the movie, I feel like, what?
You mean Clayface has five to ten minutes? Like that form? I hope not. I think so. Buckle up. I think he's going to be Clayface for only the final battle.
Flashback five seconds.
Maybe a little bit more. Maybe a little bit more. But I think it's mostly going to be this body horror thing. And then, yeah, he's going through all this. He's trying to get to Dagon. I do love when Batman's doing some investigation and he gets those tapes in there. Do you guys remember how he got into the videotape room?
I remember being punched through the wall. I don't remember how he gets.
In the videotape room. No, no. He goes in there before to plan it out because, again, Batman's always got a plan. He goes in there and then he goes to get Clayface. What he does is he's dressed up as a janitor, but he's in his full Batman outfit, but he has a janitor outfit over top of the disguise. So he's in a full cowl and he has a janitor's hat on. And that's how he gets the tape in there. But then they do. So this happens. He gets shocked. And Clay faces out. He's big mold. And then later on, though, Batman's back in the Batcave. He's got some species, a little part of him. He's shocking it, just doing weird science. Kid, look at my drawing stuff.
He's like, look at this, Alfred. And it's making all these shapes. And he's like, yeah, electricity doesn't kill it. And then, of course, he talks about, Hagen said this was the death of his lifetime. It's like the role of his lifetime. And then they reveal that, I guess, he just used the electricity to pretend that was his death, and then he was on the autopsy thing. Poor girl on that shift. You know, you're going to go do some fucking dissection, and this thing just melts. You're like, okay, what's going to happen? And then at the end, there's two things that happen. I can't remember his friend's name, but it was like a stunt double or whatever. He's like, oh.
See you down the road, Matt, or I'll see you around, because obviously he lost his friend. He was a good friend. That's one thing we didn't talk about. He was a very good friend, always supportive. Even when he was Clayface, he was trying to help him out, right? Matt wasn't the best friend to him. And then as he's walking away, there's this lady giving him pretty much his fuck me eyes, which I was like, man, if he can play some terrible joke on his friend, just go fuck his friend.
But then, so he walks away, and Clayface, as this lady, is just laughing hysterically and evil. I'm like, you're on the sidewalk. He still might hear you. But yeah, Clayface escaped. He's still at large and he's posing as this pretty lady now. So he's out there. Will we see him again? Maybe.
I did laugh.
I did laugh because as soon as the lady is laughing, or sorry, before the lady laughed and it just showed her, I'm like, man, are they really going to do this? He is going to be the lady and they're going to to be flirting with his friend. This is going to be such a fucked up situation.
Hey, aren't you Matt Hagen's stunt double?
I hear you got a big cock.
Yeah, they start going at it. Then afterwards is when he switches back to Clayface.
Yeah.
It was me.
He's pitching a 16-foot.
Same that night.
Did someone else hit that?
I hit it.
I hit it. Yeah, because I was going to say he's getting ready for his 69 and then all of a sudden she just turns into that and he's in clay face. But, yeah. What else? I think that's my notes on this. I got some trivia for both episodes and then I got our assignment. But anything else on this for notes on this episode? Feed a clay one or two? I don't know.
I just wanted to mention, like, I was surprised when Bruce did go to jail, basically. Like, he did go to the hospital. Like, I thought that was going to be Clayface again. Like, they definitely fooled me when he went through it. But obviously, he wasn't really captured for very long. No.
Not long enough he saved Lucius' life because they tried to strangle him or suffocate him, that one guy with the pillow.
True.
Thank goodness.
Do you have any other notes?
Nope.
Nope. All right, I'm going the double birds again. For both parts, actually, because I feel like sometimes we have two-parters and one is weaker or stronger, but I feel like it plays like a one big episode. So for me, it's the double-thumbers. Fuck, fireworks. Look at that, three double thumbs in a row. There you go. Okay, so this is some trivia for Leather on Wings. The episode was the first one to feature Batman bleeding. Bruce Timm stated on DVD commentary for this episode he and Paul Dini had to fight the censors to allow this shot, which was deemed inappropriate for younger viewers. So there you go. No, of course not. That's very appropriate. In addition, of course, to voicing Batman and Bruce Wayne in this episode, Kevin
Conroy also provided additional voices and various background characters. In this episode, his very first line is not, this is Batman and Bruce Wayne. It's the young police officer in the blimp. wearing the glasses, who thinks he sees a man-bat creature. So there you go, which happens a couple times in the series. People kind of do other stuff.
We completely missed this. We didn't talk about this in All Mother Wings. What do you guys think about seeing Harvey Dent? Harvey Dent made a quick appearance there because he's like, oh, you catch him, I'll lock him up, whatever, he's flipping his coin.
I did find it funny because he calls the guy Harvey because his name's like Harvey fucking whatever.
Bullock, yeah.
So I was like, Is he speaking in third person here? Is it like Harvey will catch him and Harvey will arrest him?
Already. And Harvey will burn his face and run him up.
But no, I thought it was great. I definitely got chills because I'm like, oh man, I can only imagine the slow burn that they have. I imagine Harvey is around for a decent amount of time before obviously he goes full two-faced. So yeah, it was cool.
Terry, any thoughts on Harvey?
It was cool to see him because, yeah, I mean, it only mattered time before he's Mr.
Two-Face. But he was aura farming, you know, and you catch him.
The way he was in the chair. Yeah, his legs were like, he had the cross leg. I'm very excited. I think there's a bunch of episodes with Two-Face that are great episodes. And then I think we also got some big meme potential on a few of them, too. So I think we're going to have a good time. And the good thing about this show is that it's not just right to Two-Face. Harvey Dent's around for a bit, so.
Oliver is going to ask, what is your favorite episode? Well, the series we just started, but this, stay tuned in a second. I have an assignment. So we talk about Harvey Dent. Very excited for that. Again, another great voice. You will notice this, and you probably already noticed this in Feated Clay, that Alfred had a different voice in the first three episodes. He's voiced by Clive Revell, who was originally cast in the role, but then Erfman, as I've Zimbalist Jr. is the person that voiced him in Feet of Clay, which I prefer because the voice in Leather Wings was like, very Master Wayne, like there you are, which in Feet of Clay he has it a bit, but it sounds a bit more like relatable and personable,
where in the first episode it is very much like, oh, Mr. Monopoly sort of voice. So we'll get him for two more episodes, but then you get the guy that was in Feet of Clay. That's what you get for the rest of the series for Feet of Clay. The look of Imperial Pictures was designed to look after the Warner Bros. studio, you know, Skydance Pictures now or whatever, in Burbank, California.
So you got that going on. Clayface in the show is a combination of the first two Clayfaces. The original was an out-of-work actor looking for revenge, and the second was named Matt Hagen. Obviously, Kirk, we talked about in season one, that was the Clayface back in the day. Like, the first Clayface was the actor who was, like, the serial killer that was, like, doing those disguises. So they kind of took the actor part, but then did it with this. I'm not sure if you guys caught this at all, Ron Perlman voices the shape-changing villain Matt Hagen, a.k.a. Clayface.
I fucking knew it.
He had that Perlman voice in there, but I kind of brushed it off thinking, no, he's not.
Because it's young Perlman, right? 92? That's why you're not probably thinking about it, because he sounds 10 years younger. So there you go. I'm not sure if Kirk will know anything about this, but do you know anything about the studio named Tokyo Movie Sensha?
No.
Okay, cool.
That studio animated this episode, ignored the color instructions given to them, and made their own color palette. The results were so successful, though, that Tim didn't mind. Per Tim, I think we shipped them Clayface and said to them, they said to themselves, they think they know everything, but we'll show them how to do the show. We'll change Batman's colors. We'll do special key treatments on the villains when they are walking over the green vat, which that's a big thing. That's something where, with this episode, does stand out. When it was Dagon and his little sister, when they're that green vat, and they're just completely lit, that's where this episode multiple times and even some of the clay faces change it had like a sort of
anime feel to it again just this episode i don't know how it worked back in the day but uh i was so happy with that episode the sequence where daggett and germs are walking over the green vat yeah those characters look like they're three-dimensional they look like they're rotoscoped when daggett slowly turns towards the camera and the shadows really wrap around his face it's as if they're real they did all these colors themselves we couldn't even ask them for the colors if we wanted they aren't even in our palette they had a special mix of those colors so uh There you go. And that's stuff.
Nice.
I don't know why they were doing that back in the day, but, uh, you know, that's just how it happened. So, okay. So, uh, there you go. Oliver says his figure or their fair episodes, uh, Zatanna, which will, you know, long ways to go, but we'll, we'll get there. Um, what we're going to do is cause usually we do Reagan's retrospectives. I thought we've had this happen in the past. And especially this, we, we might not be done this for a year, year and a half, whatever. What I want to do, ladies and gentlemen, and these gentlemen specifically, I want to have a master's ranking, but I don't want your specific rankings. We have to agree on the rankings together. So what I'm going to do is we're going to rank these three episodes, and
then every time we get a new batch of episodes, we're going to have to rank them in the order. So by the end, we're going to have an ultimate ranking. But the good thing is there's three of us, so there's never going to be a tie, so we have to agree. So does anyone have the bidding? Taylor, are you confused?
Explain again. Okay.
We're doing a mess. So Jesus Christ. So we're doing a combined rankings, but then that's because at the end of the time, I think there's so many times when we do an animated show and when we get there, it's like, what are our favorite episodes? It's like, other than a few, it's like, well, there's this and this.
Cause there's just so many of them.
Right.
But this is, we'll have a conclusive proof when we go back and it'll be our combined list. So maybe at the beginning, I'm sure it'll be fine, but near the middle or the end, I bet there's going to be some, uh, some issues along the way. But, uh, Does anyone want to start the bidding? What is the best episode out of these three? On Leather Wings, you got Feet of Clay Part 1 and Feet of Clay Part 2.
I will start off with the first episode I watched, which is On Leather Wings.
You want to write on my wing, Crystal.
You put that at number one, eh?
I put it at number one, for sure.
I would have put. I would have put one of the Clayface ones, but I don't know what. Which is fine, because I'm outvoted. But I'm trying to think... I'm trying to think, which... I guess I have to... It has to be part two next, right?
I would imagine.
When he's actually Clayface, and he's... More action... Yeah. I do like the mystery of part one though, right? Like the setup and everything. Like the, who is this with Bruce? Like who is Bruce Wayne?
I think the stuff that happens like around Bruce is just so goofy when he's like, like.
What, what happened?
Like it is fun.
What did I do?
I think the second one is just better for that reason.
And Tay, you're in agreeance?
I'm in agreement.
Yeah.
Okay, so this week or this episode, very easy. It's going to get a lot trickier when we got, like, episode 46 and we're like, okay, where do we put these in here? But so right now, the official Geekverse Batman the Animated Series rankings, we have Leather Wings, number one, Feet of Clay, part two, at two, and Feet of Clay, three.
So it'll change the next time. Let me read the episodes we have here. coming up. I know we have Christmas with the Joker, so we're going to get a little early Christmas off, so we're going to be due that November. But now we're going to go in order. So we got actually two... Well, you guys could have figured this. We got Christmas... I was going to say, I don't want to spoil this, but we got Christmas with the Joker, we got Nothing to Fear, and we got The Last Laugh. Also, you know that is... That's the Joker. Can you guys figure out Nothing to Fear?
Can you figure that one out?
Yeah. Scarecrow from Pearl?
Yeah, that Scarecrow from Pearl. But yeah, that'll be the one. So yeah, we got some good juicy episodes. And like I said, I will... look in the future too. It's the same thing when we did X-Men and Clone Wars. Sometimes if there's some of that, if we got double two-parters or it just works better to do four, we will do that. So if one gets added, you know, sometimes, you know, that's just the way it is. Lily says, are you going to do Justice League or Superman? We'll see in the future. I think Justice League would be more likely because the movie, Superman... you never know, but also it depends, people listen to this, we're going to record this, this is going to be on Patreon, and then, if you want these episodes, like I said, join our Patreon,
starting next month, they're going to be on there, exclusively, until we're done, and then next year, they'll start dropping, probably around this time, in fall, and then, if they do well, then yeah, we're always down, to do some more stuff, but thank you very much, to everyone that watches, let us know, anything else you want us to, talk about, or cover, or like I said, anything, I really want to know, if someone can think of a time, that Batman talked, with the Batman cow, and it was Bruce, my voice, let us know, but until then, It'll not be boring. I've not thought of an intro for this or outro yet, but I'll figure it out. So until next time, take care. Bye.
