I'm connecting with the chat right now, bonding. But you were talking about SGA. So every year, NBA officiating crew has a few points of emphasis for the season. This year, the NBA's first point of emphasis is outlawing off-arm push-offs for drivers with offensive fouls being called throughout the preseason.
SGA was one of the latest victims during the Thunder's win over the Pacers Tuesday night. Let's take a look at the video, and let's see how long this will sustain for. You can see midway through the first quarter.
Oh! What? If I'm two-time MVP, I'm not hearing that shit. Wait, wait, wait. We're going to see it again.
Don't worry. That's our favorite Canadian back-to-back MVP. People are saying this rule will adversely impact him this season.
Huh? And I didn't think that one was a big deal. Yeah, that's a bad one. I think as long as you don't extend it, you good.
Yeah, I think they put the rule in for his step back that he did.
That wasn't even. Can we see it one more time, please? The left hand step back.
It seems like they're doing it now in the preseason because all the fans are bitching and complaining, calling him a foul bait or foul merchant.
Trying to figure out which to act like it's going to.
Be a big deal. If he would have stepped back and extended, I could see that. No, no, no.
So he was getting ready to do it, but what ends up happening is they grabbed your arm. Oubre gave up the space, so he just zeroed through it.
No, but he's trying to free his left arm. He's going right. He knows he's going to go left. So he wants to do it. So he's trying to use his left hand now. See, you know, he has no space to go right.
He overcommitted. So he's just trying to get his balance. That's a bad call.
No, but that's what I'm saying. Oubre's... That's a horrible call. Oubre just let it go.
It's like he's seen it coming. Oh, that Oubre committed that way.
Yeah, like Oubre was playing with him and then he kind of released it.
So he went up. So he went up. And also, too, Shemp, correct me if I'm wrong, a lot of people be complaining about their off-arms. But sometimes it's a result of lack of balance. And also like what the offensive player is already doing to you. If you make a good move sometimes or you get them going back, even a fingertip can kind of push you back or ruin your momentum.
So when you sit there sometimes with SGA, like his wiggle, some of his movement and everything is like... He fucked up your balance. Yeah, and kind of like what Luka does. It's like, yo, Luka's strong. It's like, is he strong or did he mess up your balance, change pace, get to his spot, and now he's just like that. You know what I'm saying? The thing that bothers me about people when they be like.
Because I had to get to that point where, especially with James, I had to guard James. And I'm like, you can't say he just get fouled. He just, he just, it's like, so how come none of us have stood in front of him and just let him shoot? If that's all he do is get fouled, stop fouling him.
Let him shoot. Let him go do it. Let him do it. Nigga had 40.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying?
It's like, let him do it if y'all don't. But it's like, they are that good. Like, SGA is that good. That's why when he does that, you have to shift your feet. You have to shift your feet?
You have to. Like, you got to respect it. Especially, and I'm just playing devil's advocate, especially for the stars over 82 games and guys trying to stop you. Like, you got to defend yourself, too, on offense as well. I just... This is crazy. That was a bad call. That's a horrible call. And the off-arm only matters when it extends. It's literally in the rule book. And you got to dislodge somebody. And also, too, bro, when we talk about it, like, fans, love you to death. Shut the fuck up and watch the game. Like, we about to get changed because a trending topic says the SGA is a foul merchant. Shut the fuck up.
Yeah, I swear to God, that's a great take because I fucking hate that.
Like, why the fuck? are there new like when i went to nba summer league you know how many times they was like oh no you know that's the new rule they just put.
Oh what Why y'all putting in all this new shit?
All these niggas I watched growing up my whole life.
I've been waiting to play like them.
They can talk about be like Mike and keep playing the same rules Mike played in. These motherfuckers was slapping each other hands away from each other.
Y'all pushing. The push off on Brad Rowe. You know what I'm saying?
Derrick Harper grabbing Moz at the fucking half court, grabbing his waist, guarding him. I'm like, bro, I was allowed to do all this?
Now the degenerate gamblers are weighing in on the game because they.
Talk about, oh shit, the Man, you can't touch. You can't foul bait no more. You can't push.
That wasn't even questionable, though.
Yeah, that was great because it went down. That means that that wasn't even close to even.
They did it. Unless he got. It's like you said. It's like you said.
They saw the eyes. Kelly Oubre went like this. But that's what I'm saying.
Run it back. Run it back one time. That's what I'm saying. As soon as the head went up.
As soon as the head went up.
As soon as the head went up.
As soon as the head go up. Like you said, human, human. There was no off-arm push-off, though.
What'd you say? Human nature? That's human nature. See, his arm is over the top. Watch his head go up. They got an itchy trigger finger now, Guy.
He definitely, there should have been a flopping foul or anything or a foul on Oubre, but that's neither here nor there.
I'm just a host. I did take an online. Did you go on out there? I'm going to say the only good refs are dead or retired, to be honest. And shout out my dog, Richard Jefferson, man. I can't wait to see your ref. I'm going to be a ref when I grow up. You ain't lying. That ain't a bad profession. It ain't a bad profession. Try your chance at Hollywood, nigga. You're just going to sign up to be a ref. Try the hoopers.
Shit.
Most of them did. Most of them did. This nigga, you're wild.
Am I? I love a ref, bro.
Shout out to the refs. They good dudes. I'm just saying in general. Who asked you, nigga? You about to fuck up my career. You know what I'm saying? You doing all these no calls. I'm leaving the game three for nine and shit. I need that five for nine. You know what I'm saying? I need that. The fuck? Good money. I love a ref for sure, but when it comes down to the middleman, the ref never has to eat one time. I told you, I haven't eaten a ref since 2010. It's funny, but it's not. I'm like, bro, imagine me just going to a game. I only drive to the rim. I might not lead this bitch with a free throw. That don't even make no sense. You know what I'm saying? It don't even make no sense.
Are y'all here to be one nigga.
And talk to us? We play good defense. Everybody want to feel important, though.
I understand. I want to feel important. Feel love, man.
I don't get no love.
But what they doing here, I got hit real. Hey, man, whatever y'all went through in your career, man, come on, give us a read. Let that shit out, man. Let that shit out. We had 10 minutes of this man talking about how he's going to manipulate the refs. I'm like, damn, you can do that? That's what you did with your 32 minutes? Like, shit. Nigga, shoot, four times, you got 28 shots. You're talking about for six of them, I'm going to just fuck it up.
Hold on, hold on.
You're telling me you in Chicago, y'all at Grover, you know Grover bring real reps, and you didn't have conversations with him at all?
That's what I'm saying. We talk in Chicago, you don't talk to them. What the fuck are you talking about? They literally the ops, nigga. If you put your hands, if you can put your destiny in his hands, That's it. You'll let another man answer your door? Shout out to Chicken from Chicago, but Chicken was known to fucking game up. Like, am I lying? Wait. The rough chicken. It's rough. It's rough in Chicago. Like, literally. You know what I'm saying?
Am I lying or feeling this way, Sean? Like, how we grew up, right? For real, dude. That's crazy. I appreciate it, rapper. I went to.
Chicago just because they had the real refs there. So I get to ask them about new moves, all that.
That's what we saying.
We had no idea.
They never spoke to us. My father didn't respect that shit. Like, would you cry to the... If I spent the game... yelling at the ref, like, why you ain't call that? Like, I used to have to run for that.
You don't ever sit the ref, hey, yo, let me, like, Eric used to ref over there.
Like, Eric, here, I got this, like. I didn't know him by name until after the championship. I knew them by name because I just thought they was decent humans. We never thought that.
Once they blow the whistle, like, if I'm driving and they blow the whistle, take three steps.
What? Can't call travel. You talking about you traveling now in an NBA game? No, no. Think about what I'm saying.
If I'm driving to the lane and you foul and I hear the whistle, right, I'm making sure I make the layup. I'm going to take three steps. It's already an and one. It's already going up. They can't call travel. They can't take it out to the side.
I don't want to get mad for them taking away my button. No, the ball stopped. Dead play. Can't call travel on dead play. No, they're not going to let the– the point's not going to count if you travel, brother. Not for a superstar, bro. You know who you're talking to? You don't ever see LeBron– No.
He makes sure he get that– I know that LeBron has hiccup things that he does where they might take it out.
He might grab the ball, take a couple steps.
I know everybody in the league got them little brain farts that we don't care about. No, no, no. That's just– But as far as when niggas foul LeBron, it's one-two and he lays that bitch up.
No.
Watch, when he goes left, he takes three steps every single time. But that was the rule.
The gather step has always been there. It's this gray area, and that's one of the gray areas that I found out.
That makes me so mad, Gil. He makes me so mad. Niggas like him, Chris Paul, the shit that y'all do to the rule books.
You got to talk to the ref, bro. But this is why they keep changing the fucking rules. Because niggas be reading it. Stop. When you say zero step, what is a zero step? Exactly. Niggas like that. Think outside the box. I used to get full court threes. You know how y'all didn't win? They take it one. I'm like, hey, ref, look.
They got one to give. They got one to give. I'm shooting it. When I see him reach it, I'm shooting it. I'll tell him, I'm shooting it. Well, it better look like a shot. Oh, it will. Think I wanted to get, ah, and I'm shot. Give me my trippy, though, stupid. That's bad. No, you're right, but that's still bad for the game of basketball. But again, it's having a conversation with a human, though. Would you ever do that? If they ever wonder why I do it.
I give out hard fouls sometimes, that's why. Niggas like you.
Real talk.
Let me be at 75 feet finna take a foul and that man shoot a three. Hard fouls for you forever. Yeah, I need that.
Look, he going to invite it. He going to invite it. He going to invite it to give up. Come on, like, if we ref right now, we're going to all ref the game very different. We're all going to ref it different.
For sure.
Yeah, I'm going to stay out the way. No, I'm not even saying that. Yeah, we ain't calling shit. Same with me, right? We ain't calling shit.
You got to figure out what their game plan is. What style they like, 80s, 90s? What do they like?
I had one set. If I blow the whistle, shoot it up there, I like any ones. I want points. And points. That's real. I'm saying in big games, I'm just saying. That's crazy.
I never knew that people had these type of conversations.
Hell yeah. I'm not doing it. I was watching Joey Crawford's Hall of Fame speech. Oh, I love Joey Crawford. But he was like, I wanted to be a ref because I was watching Will Chamberlain on it.
I was thinking in my head like, you're watching another man like, I'd love to officiate against this nigga.
But that's what I'm saying. Think about people that be like, shit, I'll be a cop. Like, think about when you see ball boys. It's like, bro, you're a ball granddad. Like, you be at the arena, some niggas be like 78 years old. You be like, god damn. Nigga, what memo did you not get? Ball boy. Yeah, bro.
I love the NBA so much, bro.
Right.
He got Apollo with.
All activities around it.
Ball boy.
He wanted to be just a team. Just a team. You don't want the chef. You don't want the masseuse.
You don't want nobody to have a job.
I be overly thinking. Yeah, this nigga's overly thinking.
But the term ball boy would imply, like, 18 or younger.
Yeah, like, damn, niggas, go run the front office. Like, go be a manager. Not a ball man. You are arrested development, champ. I've been here since I was 10. Like, how? It's been a good job. I get to meet all the celebrities. You get side jerseys, towels. You don't know how many jerseys he done gave to the baddies.
Imagine some of the stories. Some of them jerseys, the ball boys, man. How many things have you gave to the ball boys?
I might have one of my shit. I didn't give ball boys all type of shit. They wanted every Turner merchandise. No, they didn't. I could tell you. Yeah, they did. The Philly motherfuckers was all on this nigga, man.
But looking at this new push-off rule, a lot of people think it's going to impact SGA this season. Do y'all feel like it's going to be a big deal or it's just now performative for preseason and they're going to forget about it a couple weeks into the season?
It always starts preseason, first 15 games. What'll happen is if SGA is sitting out, if Brunson's sitting out of games, Luka's sitting out of games, and they're getting in foul trouble early and it's kind of messing up the experience.
then it's back to normal.
It starts with the stars because that's who you're targeting, but at the end of the day.
They're just encouraging them to do it less.
Yeah, just don't do it against them is innocent.
Don't do it so much on the TV. Or if I don't like you, look, I know I don't supposed to call.
If y'all on ABC. But if I don't like you, then I'm calling it.
Right. Other than that, we just play some basketball. But do you also think in the NBA when you play long enough, you kind of like, even with the refs included, it's just like an unwritten language where it's like, all right, bro, I called it through preseason. Now we're going to get back and we know who, who. Like I said, like we'll show up. I mean, look at the refs. I know their names. It's like, what's up, bro? You good?
and call it that, but it's like, hey, brother, the ref's damn near for the stars. You understand how the movie roll goes.
All they do, it's like, damn near like wrestling in that sense where it's.
Like we know each other moves. Yeah.
Like, if Gil comes down and he does give off a little chicken wing, it's like, yeah, he give off a chicken wing, but are we really going to take away his chicken wing to the step back three where he turns around and doesn't watch it go in?
Like, that's what the fuck the fans are doing. Or Durant get two fouls in the first few minutes. It's like, he's not getting three. And I wouldn't want him to get three because I understand why I'm there.
Which, by the way, I figured out, this was one wrinkle I figured out about superstars. I was allowed to do my swipe down And some of the aggressive shit that I could do, but I had to be guarding a rock star. Because I think they just, the league wanted to encourage that.
They'd be like, Shump's here.
Like, if he's scoring against him, he's really good.
So it was like, I was.
Allowed, like, I remember hitting, sometimes I'd hit somebody's hand and just be like.
Damn, like, I know that one.
And they'd be like, But it'd.
Be like I was allowed to get away with it because of that reputation that you talking about where it's like beginning of the year This is the point of emphasis. It is what it is. But y'all know he might swipe down swipe down That's what he do. So point of emphasis cool, but signature moves this shit. That's like niggas saying we got a what you called against dragging the foot on the step back and Yeah, y'all going to say that, but you ain't going to take away Braun's signature move.
Step back left. At a certain point, James Harden, the running joke was just like, yo, he able to do two step backs. You know what I mean? Literally, just like that. I ain't going to lie, though. I'd be bothered by that, though, because he's not traveling. No, he's not traveling. No, no.
He just got good footwork. The most incredible shit in the world. Amazing footwork, bro.
I have never seen somebody. It was like a 67-33 split. So I was asking a reference about that.
He said when they did the film and they're watching all of it, they said he did it 60% of the.
Time correct, 33% wrong.
So they said in real time, we can't just assume that he's traveled. We have to give him the benefit of the doubt because he's doing the right majority of the time. If it's that obvious, we'll call it other than that. If he's doing the move, we're just watching it because it's clear. But even as players, we don't really care.
That's what I'm saying. It comes from trending and fans and everything. As players, we don't really care. The only thing I care about, I don't know if you know, is a dude carrying before he takes off. Do you know what I mean? It's coming down like Gardner. I got over that. Everybody cares. But just in general, it's not really a talkative thing. You understand hoopers are going to have their move. And with James... Killers are going to attack. That's it. Yeah.
The reason why the carry becomes so hard to deal with is because it's the perfect Hezzy.
And you mix it in with quickness like D.
Rose.
When D. Rose would do that shit, you'd be like, bro, D. Rose lit. But you'd be like, bro, he's about to carry and run with a crazy first step.
You can't... People don't realize what... I don't even think the ref realizes when.
This happens, that slide.
So now I'm in a stance, but you sliding left or you sliding right, once that hang dribble happens, it's like if you don't call it when he does this, because when he does this, I low-key have to say the.
Move's over, he has to shoot this, or it's a carry.
So my job is to stay in the stance until I see that. Once I see it, I'm like, okay, I can come out of my stance. If you let him do that, like, I look stupid. Now I'm jumping, I'm a bunny rabbit.
I look stupid.
Nigga doing all type Now he can Do this Snatch it back I'll turn it around All type of dumb ass shit But it's like You have to call it Or it don't matter But after a while I just realized bro I'm in the NBA now Yeah fuck it No that coming out Your stance.
Is over with But you'll be You'll realize how.
Much I gave that shit up In college Like the second jumper type shit Like I'm not.
Yeah, I'm here. Yeah.
Shoot it first and put it up. Unless I see you load up for that fade away. If you load up to sit on it, if you lay on the table.
Cool. I jump. I'm not jumping for shit. Because you have physical gifts. Like sometimes when we sit there and people like, how do you guard? I've never. Obviously, guys shoot from 30 some feet out, but I've never picked up. a step within the three-point line. I trusted my length. Do you understand what I'm saying? You can approach differently, and you know as well as anything, if he's a right-hand shooter, my left hand up. If he's a left-hand shooter, my right hand up. Fuck it. You know what I'm saying?
But he didn't get to the rim. I ain't letting you get nothing sweet. Ain't nothing sweet about it. All this shit you be doing, I ain't letting that happen. Who's the best defender you ever seen guard you, and who's the best defender you ever seen in general? Marcus Banks. Bro, Marcus Banks was like that. Defensively, for me. But offensively, too.
There's some people that just got to add a note to it. When he came in the game, them two, three.
Minutes, the guy ain't scoring. Really? Man. You ain't even trying to flirt with me. I remember when I first hit him. Man, give me that. Lay up. Go on, lay up. Like, what the fuck is this? Really?
Here, take the ball. I got to put him in the post.
He would not ever let me draw the ball up the court. Because everything I had, it's like he neutralized all of it. So my speed, when I got the load up, because he was so quick, grounded, and strong, I couldn't push through him.
He snatched it every time. Really? Nigga, them two minutes, I'd rather sit out. That's how I felt when I guarded D. Rose. D. Rose playing a regular season game.
I'm like, nigga, we was supposed to play against each other in junior year.
I knew. I jacked.
The next year you drag or yeah the next year or it was like i just know we kept missing each other we never got to face off so i'm like you playing yeah i got coming off mvp year you see what i'm saying and i'm like nigga i've been watching this tape like i know all your moves like all of them i'm talking i'm stealing the ball hit doing all this he was looking like what the fuck like i know he was probably thinking in his head like it ain't no way i'm like no in college you slept last night i did not like i've been waiting for you was on that too when we was in you forced me in nine turnovers.
But i'm I'm saying it's because it's like, dog.
I'm trying to shoot the shit. But I'm saying that's the difference, like he said, with Banks. Like, you think in his mind, oh, man, this game 53, I'm finna kill him.
In his mind, he like, no, you one of my favorite guys.
Yeah. like it ain't that i'm like studying the game like i know your game that what i was telling you i'm like they like what's up what are you i'm like bro i've been playing against this nigga my whole life like y'all not gonna tell me shit about him fuck the scouting report we played this nigga at ohio state i told coach man fuck the scouting report dog you told your coach hell yeah coach you telling me about this telling me about don't.
Tell me shit about dog don't Don't tell me nothing, bro. Obviously, you guys have a deep connection. Yeah, but I'm like, bro, that's out the window, my nigga. Like, we're not... Fuck that game plan you talking about. I got you.
Yeah, I'm like, we do what you say and he's going to kill us. I believe they was saying some dumb ass shit. They was like, we going to make him play. They was like trying to get you to play back to the basket. and in the mid-range. I'm like, that's his fucking game. The way they were saying it, I was just like, I don't like it. Let's abandon that shit. Coach, you gave me a little leeway, so I got to get in on it.
You never felt bad not making all defensive or anything? I'm saying because that was... You know what's wild?
Until Tony Allen and Pat Biff start screaming about like, getting accolades for defense. I don't know why I never cared. I never even saw myself as a defensive nigga. I was just like, what shots am I going to get with Melo and Amari here?
Yeah, yeah. JR here. Like, fuck, what am I going to shoot?
Like, I was cool with the five, ten shots sometimes they gave me.
Like, I was like, shit, this cool? Like, you know what I'm saying? What's so funny is there was people on that list. There was people on that list. And I was like, that's not, they're not defensive players. Yeah. Yeah, like you're coming from all as a player real tight like what matters I used to target that's why they don't get they don't get no say so if you look if.
These guys are always per game against those guys you like what the fuck who are they defending right up and I'm looking at him like yo you're your ass like how are you when how are you on here you have no footwork your balance is all that you might have a better defensive guy back there like Like, Cleveland defense was on point when Vrezha was in the game.
Yeah, Vrezha, yeah. Because, yeah, he was a tracker. He was a tracker.
So I always knew, whichever way I start, I got to go the opposite way. So if I got to trick Vrezha, I'm going to go middle, let him commit, and then hurry.
Up and get back the other way. If not, he coming. He's coming. He's going to have to fuck up his principle. Correct me if I'm wrong, and shout out to my man, Eda Ellis. But, like, you look at moment, fuck, man. Like, P.J. Tucker. Yeah, he was a good defender. He was a good defender, but, like, certain nights, you'd be like, but you're holding on a 40. Like, do you understand what I'm saying? Like, when it comes down to that, did you think he was an elite defender?
Do you think he was a guy that guarded some of the best players? Why are you laughing? The guy that guarded some of the best players and then, you know what I mean, kind of got the reputation of a defender. Because... I'm just saying, because that week, I'm using one week. And that week versus KD, I was just like, well, he locked up, but he got paid off.
I didn't think he'd get 40 points. Okay, now. It was 48 minutes in the game. Okay, yes. No, no, no, no, no. Make it make sense to me, because I want to know. Make it make sense. All right. If a nigga get 48 points in a 48-minute game. Yeah. You might as well just sit on the bench. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
You got to look at it like this. I didn't give him 48 points. I'm like, bro, I should have just stayed at the crib. When you look at.
Kevin Durant and you look at every single person that guarded him.
Yes. Who frustrated him the most?
Nobody.
None of us. None of us. No. Pat Bale. His gym shoe.
You will see someone that's getting on your skin. You know when Kevin Durant is kind of like, when he be like, yo, yo, yo, yo, play basketball.
You're doing too much. Like, all right. Like, you got him. No, that means.
Because he's quiet. He will just eat you alive. But, PJ, some guys, their defense is just being annoying.
That's real.
Just being annoying, like, you don't supposed to stop me.
Right?
Like, I feel like I work on my craft.
He never had 48 points before. Why did he have 40? Like, that's what I'm saying. That's what he said. He said he didn't have any fish in 40. Excuse me. Any fish in 40. He was balling 40. Yeah, he was making his way downtown.
Like, I've had somebody have 40.
30, but it's like nigga your dumbass don't realize you shot 35 shots Like your weekend like the reason we're blowing y'all out We're plus 20 because your dumb ass is trying to score 40 on that week. He was the best player that Katie Katie will be doing the 40 on somebody and it's like if it's any fish in 40 That's what he's saying.
I guess it's fishing for everybody. I I made a fall a couple times. I got him frustrated a couple times.
You agree with us? I did this. That was a bad example. That was a bad example. My fault, PJ.
I know I wasn't going to stop him. I can't stop him. It's Kevin Durant, MVP, most valuable player.
Exactly. My job is to make it hard for him that night. Yes, the 48 is there. It looked hard. That's what I'm telling him. That's what I'm telling him. If it wasn't me, he would have had 70. The inefficient. Exactly. But he got 10 with his 48, but I'm hearing you.
But it's also because, remember, I had to be in that position where it's like my.
Respect is how did he do? Yeah.
So it's also me saying they're going to shoot early shots in the shot clock. I'm going to force him to go outside of every play. So now Westbrook is never going to get going or.
You know what I'm saying? Whatever the hell you're doing.
But it's like there's a lot of other shit that you could do besides that to where that's why he got the money he got for being a stopper.
Yeah, 1,000. Defensively, he will shorten your shot clock. Okay.
He will keep you from getting these key spots where it's like he got KD doing an ISO win last game. All our bigs was in foul trouble because this nigga was going to the cup every time.
Now he's shooting a pull-up. It's not a three.
It's a pull-up, you know what I'm saying? And it took away this much time.
And I'm only asking that because the same thing I said about the stars, like the pros, like the superstars, when it's like, yo, you might be judged from like a three or four week season.
Yeah.
When you look at defensive stoppers, it's like, hey, man, you might be judged from a five-person standpoint. I used to get that. And that's where I'm asking it being like, hey. I get judged off of five points. And that's what I'm saying. So when we're sitting there, it's like, hey.
You average 30, you're supposed to have 25. Well, I didn't do my job.
But, yes. That's insane. And I only guarded you for maybe a quarter. Listen. Maybe. Because all your shit probably in transition.
I was going to say, now, think about Jenna Brown. We all watched him play great defense on Luka.
Yeah.
What was the stats?
We all saw Iguodala play great defense on LeBron.
Yeah. What was the stats? Yeah.
Kawhi Leonard, when he won finals MVP, right, for playing great defense on LeBron, what was LeBron's stats?
Hold on, LeBron was going crazy. Yeah, LeBron was going crazy. We was never saying that anybody stopped anybody. That was the public narrative and perception. I like that. I'm talking about you. This is the only thing I'm saying. If you're a defender and we call you a defender, you're getting paid for a defender. The same way I'm saying you're supposed to be a superstar and a scorer, I'm expecting you to go get 40. When we sit there and we call you a defender, I understand a 30, an inefficient 30. I'm just like, hey, bro, go do your job. Straight up. You're supposed to be. Our plus minus should be better. And that's it.
Now y'all talking the same kind of language I'm talking. In this sense, Luka don't play no defense, right?
He don't need to. Okay, we both know that. Okay, I understand. He don't play no defense. We know what his level is. MVP, this, this, this. Yeah.
Now, have you noticed a person who plays defense doesn't get criticized for their lack of offense? But their defense is not on the level of his offense.
You're not lying.
Lou Dork.
All them niggas.
You watch a nigga play 38 minutes.
Let's say like a Lou Dork, right?
He don't have to go out there and average 30 points.
He go out there and just play defense. And they're like, we need one of them on the team. Luka needs to play defense.
Wait a minute.
I don't know what team he's going to make, but it ain't MVP type of defense.
This is an elite scorer who you're saying needs to play both ends. But this is a regular defensive player that's a liability offensively, and.
You don't care.
It's like, yeah, we'd rather have that.
Than have a Luka. You're stupid as fuck. And I'm waiting until they start saying with Luka, like, they keep bringing up his defense. I'm like, hey, bro, when can we stop? When can we just say he don't need to play no defense and he just got to show up That's March Luka with 37, 9, and 8. You give me 37, 9, and 8? I'm like, bro, don't even worry about this guy. Am I wrong? Am I bugging for saying that, Sean? I'm bugging for saying that?
No.
If you bring me 37, 9, and 8? Nigga, you can't slide your feet. You're a grown-ass man. I'm not going to slide my feet. You got kids. You got kids, though. You got kids. You ain't got no pride.
I'm going to ask you to play the other side of the game that's part of the game.
I love that.
But to carry a team is a completely.
Different battle, bro. I'm not asking you Nobody I'm asking you to move your feet.
Yeah, I think about Luca You got a movie now look at think about Luca who just has a defensive player on the team, right?
So let's say we'll say your walker. We'll say what's a a star, right? That's our Thompson. Yeah Everybody love to have him on the team.
Yeah you want him a If we say, yo, play some offense, nigga. God, I need some help.
That's the problem. But you never get. No, no, no. I'm going to tell you the difference. I'm about to tell you the difference. I'm about to tell you the difference. I'm about to tell you the difference. Offensive niggas, because there's glory in that, don't never look at a nigga like a sore Thompson and say, hey, you with me all summer. We shooting. I ain't trying to pass that nigga the ball.
Exactly.
We got this understanding.
But listen, on the flip side though, on the flip side, you asking him to do the same shit.
That's the value. Okay.
If Lucas scores 37 and he's also responsible for another 20 assists in the ball, maybe 25, you're accounting for, you know, 60 some points.
Yeah. Cool.
A star might only have 10, but this nigga that can potentially get to 50 is on some bullshit tonight.
So it's the same. No, it's only three niggas in the world. No, no, no.
What I'm saying is it's not. So I used to do it. That's the only reason I had a contract, bro. But I did the math. I would watch and say, you know what? When we play y'all, they dumbass think that they are winning because Evan scoring. Mm hmm.
But honestly, they lose if Evan... Evan gonna do this anyway.
They lose if he don't score.
I'm guarding you. Love it. I understand. I'm just saying. You've got to play the numbers.
No, what I'm saying is, but the numbers is, in reality, Luka gets complained about his offense.
He has to pull the rabbit out the hat.
What I'm saying is, which is all NBA.
It's all NBA, his first team. This is the player he is. For six years.
Now, a defensive player who puts no points on the other side is not that in his field. The only person in his field who don't play offense that is that level will be a Rudy Goldberg, right? A Ben Wallace, right? A Ben Wallace, a Draymond Green. But what are you saying?
Because he's talking about a four-time defensive player. Four-time defensive player. If you're not going to put no offense, you're not going to put no offense into the game.
This is how this defense is supposed to look compared to a looker who don't play defense. Your defensive player that you're glorified better be him.
Copy.
You're saying why they don't detail he got scored. 40 went on the defensive player's head tonight.
No, no, no, no. Yes. No, no, no.
What I'm saying is, like, if you're going to lack something, right? Like, if a Luka, who else don't play defense?
A Curry. James, Curry, Luka.
On the offensive end, what they're putting in is MVP-like scoring.
50 points, sure.
That's their scoring.
Now, this defensive player that's on.
The court, right? Let's just say Roberson.
Yeah.
Andre Roberson.
No one gives the flack of no offense, but the defense that he's bringing is not all NBA first team of.
Defensive player of the year effort. Oh, you didn't think Andre Roberson was guarding like that. No, no, no.
I'm saying that's the person. If you're going to complain about the defense on this guy.
Complain about the offense? I need to complain about the offense of this guy.
You don't remember them hammering Andre Robbins? Unless he's Dennis Rodman, I'm cool with it.
But do you remember them hammering Andre Robbins? Because he's shooting 42% from the free throw line.
You said that why you don't criticize it. It gets criticized.
Let me just, I got to repeat what Gil said, bro. Like, for Lucas' instance. I got to stick up for the corner. I'm just saying, but March Luca, bro, if you bring it in, if you're responsible for 57 points per night It's okay to say you did your job. It's talk to the other four. And I'm only saying that because...
I've never said nothing wrong with him. Oh, no, no, but I've been saying, but he never gets enough credit for being like, when you talk about Luka, it's like, bro, ask Luka if he give a fuck about guarding. He don't. That's why he not winning, dog. Stop saying that shit out loud. No, he's winning. But, but, but... Listen, though, stop endorsing that for Luka. No, no, no, no, no.
I'm not endorsing that.
He's not going to stop nobody.
He's not going to stop anybody. One day... He's not.
Going to stop anybody.
One day, Luka's going to say, you know what? I don't fucking feel like losing today. And I don't fucking trust him to do it. I'm not putting my destiny in another man's hands.
Move. Come on. One-on-one, you're going to have to make me fall on my face.
That's how you do it. A nigga with wide hips ain't stopping nobody. At some point, he don't do it, bro.
That's what I'm saying. I hate that people do that, though. He's allowed to do that.
Lucas, if you can dance like that, you can dance like this.
You just don't want to do it yet.
Now, get the same energy you saw.
Huh?
Get the same energy to the star type of players. I do.
You got to be a man if a nigga can guard you and say this.
Trust me. And turn around. Listen up. I was known as a defensive motherfucker. Do you think if T.
Lou would have told me something, you could get 30 shots up today, you think the bitches ain't going up?
I don't know the percentage. Don't even give a fuck.
If you told me I could shoot 30 shots a game the whole season, my nigga, I'm definitely going to be 25 a game.
20 a game, whatever. But that's the thing.
But that's not saying that I'm a better offensive player. That's just I get 30 shots, nigga.
But that's the complaint.
The complaint is when you're comparing me not playing defense, your idea.
That being a two-way score is an elite group.
Yeah. Right? Right.
And when we're talking about elite, There's only like 10.
Of them in the world. Straight up. Who's in this group. That are going to put passion.
But you're talking about me as just an offensive player like I'm not the 11th through the 20th ever.
He the juggernaut. Like what I mean?
But they're talking to me like you would rather have me play defense, give up my offense, we lose by 40.
Right? Oh, yeah.
You know what I'm saying? Like when they're talking about, oh, I'm not going to sacrifice these 39-9. But if I know he can be looked up.
No, Gil.
No, I know the difference. I know there's only Kareem, Giannis. Him and James have real life clips where they're standing there.
Yes.
Somebody goes by them and they're still standing.
I get that, but you're telling me... No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Gil, Gil, Gil. Gil, listen though. I'm not asking for him to be. Don't even stress your hammies out. Gil, tell them, bro. In the NBA, they hire people to guard, bro. And they hire people to play. Niggas get paid to play defense. Niggas get paid to play defense.
That's fine.
All I'm saying is, I'm saying.
The same way I could turn to Luka, if I was a defensive player on the team, I should be able to turn to Luka and say, bro, at least give me a slider or two so I can help.
And on the other side... You're going to get mad if Luka say, hey, can you hit a jump shot? Can you work on your jumper?
So you can help me out offensively?
And I'm going to tell him, I'm going to tell him, I will shoot 40%.
But now, you got to give me at least five shots. Oh, I can do eight. If you're going to get 40% by tomorrow, God damn.
It, I'll slide it. I'll slide one.
We'll win a championship. If you can give me 12. But that's the difference.
I'm tired of your man calling me two.
How many times has Asura Thompson shot 10 threes?
He shouldn't. You get me now?
But but niggas shouldn't go by Luca like you don't think a woman niggas shouldn't go back You don't play office.
You're not shooting your chin.
I'm not playing my we both do what we do Why should I pick up some motherfucking files cuz this is not what I do just like you don't want to go over to From the three, that's not what you want. That's what we know You stop them you don't want to do the other side The niggas that's doing this They want to do that I want to shoot my 10. You don't want to play defense.
I'm not going to lie, bro, but once you get on a team and you realize it's a give and take, you kind of look at your mans and be like, all right, you're going to have to score 30. I'm going to have to guard because you can't guard for shit and I can't shoot for shit.
I told James plenty of times, I don't mind you getting beat.
But don't let a nigga straight line. Yeah, you know what?
If you can fear, I just need you to fear him just a little.
So that I can help. I can't help you.
Let him go a little east to west. Yeah, that's it. I can't help you if you do that, but if you just give me a little, nah, I'm with you. Yeah, like get beat at 14 seconds.
Which I'm going to ask you on the other end, nigga. I can't get it to myself. But if you could accept that double team and remember that I'm opening the corner and give me 10 of shots, I will hit four of them. And that's when... But I got to hang with you all summer, though. You got to take me on your $ 200 million yacht.
I need all that. That's when they win the championship.
Once that non-defensive player just goes by the principles.
Hey, below the free throw line, don't let him straight line you. We're veering him off. We want him to... take two, three dribbles. Start the rotation. And that's it.
Make sure when your guy beat him, get mine. And that's when the defensive... Because Tony Parker and him, Ginobili... They wasn't great on-ball defenders, but you couldn't tell they was bad defenders because they played by their principle.
If he's on this side, push him this way. Don't, like, I got to go over the top. Don't break the rules.
Just don't break the rules. Just play by the rules, and we'll cover up the rest.
Game plan. Game plan. Even Detroit Pistons. Who had a hell of a thing, man, Joe. They had a hell of a thing going. Do your job. Nope. See, this is what I'm saying.
Do your job, Joe.
I'm not telling you to do ours. Our job is. I do my job. Y'all do some other shit. We love basketball. I love it. I love basketball. You ain't do nothing wrong. Don't feel like you did nothing. You ain't say nothing disrespectful. I truly was asking. That's it. No, you wasn't disrespectful with the question, though. The context was just different. Because I didn't left games and be like, you did a great job, my brother. This nigga had 37.
Ask him if I did a great job. You know what I mean? You can look at numbers or whatever, but I'm going to scream over if he played 38 minutes or he played however many minutes. Unless he shot crazy out of the way, I'm like, did you really stop him? Or if I respect a scorer who didn't score a bajillion points. I'm like, yo, to be honest, did you film me tonight? Like, do you understand? Yeah, no, no, no.
That's just the truth. It's like, yeah, good job. All right, bro. Man, don't worry about me.
No, there was some times where I had like 40 and I was like, nigga, that was, hey, dude got me.
Okay. Because now I'm doing shit that I didn't want to do. Yeah.
Like, if I got my, like, I got to get my layup, get my what's that, if I got my little routine I'm trying to do and now you, now I got a fake free throw, I got to, now I got to play outside myself.
Yeah, he like that. I might be 9.
For 10, but it's like, oh, the ball's just bouncing my way. And there's been plenty of times where I was 3 for 16.
That nigga trash. Oh, he trash. He not influencing nothing. I'm off. You know what I mean? I got some spots I hit. I just went out last night.
Huh?
I just went out last night. What did you feel, like, so versus the Lakers when you had the 60? Easy work. Yeah. No, no, no. Okay. Why are you lobbing him up this? No, no, no, because I'm asking. Did you feel like it was, did you feel like I could have had 80 or were you like, I'm hot tonight? That's what I'm asking. Oh, you were pumped.
Not I could have had 80, but there's one thing that I knew. As long as I played by the rule of thumb, I was going to have a good night because my career against the Lakers was good. It was don't do the same move two times in one game against them. So I played to the principle of don't do like if I did a left to right crossover.
And I got him, don't try it again.
Because he done, they done cracked, he done seen all the motions of it to know what I'm going to do. So if I go left to right or now the next time I get him, I'm going right to left. If I pulled up one, two, pull up, he's done calculated.
He looking for the tendencies. Right?
So it's like, all right, like more, it's more of a mind game than actual, like it's a mind game. Start off the game, hey, I got Gil. I'm going to shut him down. And, you know, you go over there and smush. And when he say that, like, all right, listen, forget the first two plays.
One for flat. now i want to see how he reacts.
Right because he done already game playing for what.
I remember and he's like i didn't see this man just calling out a whole that's another thing when they'd be like go guard them you're like all right bet i'm gonna go guard them but you're like damn that's like my third time ever seeing kairi in person like just look a little crazy on the island you're like you're like man you look just like the video game you're like man this This really is.
Hey, the wildest shit that happened to me like that, the nigga, they threw Rajon Rondo a fucking inbound and that nigga snatched that shit out the air and called a play with his fingers, but he was palming the ball and was like, no, no, go through that.
And you're like, oh, this is what they was talking about.
But I was fucked up because in my mind when he did it, I damn near wanted to react because I'm like, But then I was like, how are you pointing?
Then I look like this nigga got this shit with three fingers. And you realize you in the NBA. Yeah. You're like, any other little nigga can't grab the ball.
I'm with real superhumans, and this nigga got a 7'2. And I'm like breathing on them for the inbound pass.
Y'all had it easy.
He said, fuck him.
And he the fourth best player on the team. Y'all had it easy.
He like, fuck him.
Fuck sure. I'm like, damn. The positions y'all was in, y'all had it easy. Who? How you? Y'all had it easy. Man, I don't know how you. I came in in 2010, bro. That's good. You didn't have to guard Kobe on the island. Damn, there was Kobe when I guarded him, bro. T-Mac on the island. You know why? I would have loved me some of that. No, no, no, no, no, no. The rule of thumb.
Was all rookies, You're getting that work.
1,000. There's no helping. Your team's not helping. You better not help. No, and that was the old NBA.
The old NBA.
You better not help. They would leave you on the island and be like, he thinks he's good. It was a welcome to the NBA. I'm mad I was born so late.
If I'm guarding a guard, like my off guard guard him, he's a rookie, you're going to guard him.
Because you got to get your average against him. Yeah, T-Mac, all them niggas. What did T-Mac put on Melo? And you better not help him. You a superstar? You're going to get this when you get a rookie on YouTube. You have no business being on them. By yourself. By yourself. You want that work? You think it's up? It's by yourself then. And that's it. Don't help. Don't help. Welcome to the league. What does T-Man give? 51. 51. T-Man, yeah.
You know you're not giving.
Fucking Mellow 51.
It's a rookie. There's no helping. You got to get it. You got to stop it by yourself.
We're not helping you at the rim. We're not doubling for you.
I like that, though. That's how you make a name. That's how you do it. I always tell people back in the day, the game was more competitive. It was more like More maniacal, more like alpha. Yes. More alpha. Back in the day, you find a shooter, you'd be like, man, if the shooter don't hit a shot, sit your soft ass down. We out here banging. You know what I'm saying?
Go impose your will. And that's the difference between the new NBA and not dissing where they say it's easier making it now because it's like, hey, bro, you can score 30, but if you can't stop nobody, you can't fucking play. You can't be out here 6'2, spacing the floor, shooting 35%, giving up 15 points. That's what it is.
Like being a superstar then... Remember, the superstar tested your will.
So when T-Mac, when Mello's guarding T-Mac, and it's your time to get welcome to the NBA, what are you going to do?
If you call for help, they're looking at you.
So all 51... Everybody going to be like, all right, he got it.
He ain't calling for no help.
He banged. He didn't do the bullshit. I'm going to try to knock you out. No, he playing regular basketball. He trying to stop me.
In real time. He it. He it.
Hey, Rook, your second year, rookie guarding you. Bring him over here. It was like a little tradition. I'm just saying, you know, they probably did that to me, too.
It just didn't go their way. No, 1,000, but the Indians... You know what I'm saying?
That's why they had me guard, niggas, because it was like, yeah, it ain't going like that.
Like, this whole, like.
Yeah, just threw him in.
Like, nah, it ain't go like that. Once you stop him, though, I'm talking about, like, the front office guys. Paul Pierce did me like that, though. They start comprehending. It's like, let's see what this kid is made of. It's literally your coming-of-age moment. Hey, matter of fact, I lied. Paul Pierce.
Yeah.
Paul Pierce is the truth, bro. I'll be honest with you. Paul Pierce dragged me in Boston. When I was, like, honestly, I knew Kobe was elite, but I remember leaving a game and being like, hey, bro, like, I knew Paul was the truth. I'm like, bro, somebody's lying. Like, They not marketing and getting this dude. I'm like, bro, this dude is the truth. He don't shut the fuck up.
He talk all this shit. He's going to smoke. And literally, he don't ever feel. I remember one time we beat them by like 28. We were beating them by 28 or something. He was still talking shit. I'm like, do you ever shut? He's like, bro, weak ass nigga. I don't even know how you made all these fucking shots tonight.
You know, I don't lose niggas like you. Like, he's just saying shit. I'm like, bro, you down 30. And I'm like, bro. I remember telling my friends, I said, bro, Kobe and all of them are cold, but Paul Pierce, I never... I remember just sitting there, I'm like, bro, this dude is the truth. He only had no athleticism.
He only had no athleticism. He did. No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm talking about compared to... I'm talking about like... No, no, he didn't. He never had nothing. Paul Pierce and James Harden were the same. Are you serious? James is more athletic. They both had a 40-inch vertical. James Harden is another one. No, James is an athlete. But their offense... But.
The way Paul's offense was, he didn't need it. He didn't need athleticism.
He liked to shoot.
If he went to the lane, he could get up there and dunk shit. But other than that, it's all under the straight fundamentals.
And he didn't need free throws or nothing. So you're just sitting here, you're looking like, damn. You're looking at Doc. You just put this nigga anywhere, he's going to get a bucket. And then when you go to Boston, I'm just saying it's one thing to see marketing. But when you go behind the scenes and you talk to players, the truth is Paul Pierce. Yeah. Like, this is the best nigga walking. Like, you go around, like, damn, he is. Like, this is the best nigga. Like, Brandon Roy. Yes. This one of the best niggas. Fuck what y'all talking about.
This one of the best niggas walking.
Boy.
And that's what shocked me.
Boy, if that nigga would have had some knees.
What? Boy. Just a little bit.
See, he did his work. By the second year, he was all star.
And that nigga was doing that with no fucking business. And then, just a little bit of knee juice. If he just had a little bit. Just a little. Just a little bit. Put a little oil in. What the fuck happened? Was he drinking Henny or something? No, I think he was. whole life?
I think he had repairs done. So it was just like after a while they had to take the whole meniscus. But he played another two, three, four years on them shits. What was that like in person?
Brandon Roy, what was that like in person? It was just.
When you, especially when they come in young, like, you know how you watch somebody's movements?
Well, he was 22, so... And you'd be like... Yeah. Damn, he... Like, you know, they just move different. His movements, he understood how to get... Joe Johnson was the same way. They got, like, their own... Joe Johnson? Yeah. I remember the first couple years. He's the coldest, right? I was like... They was talking about...
They was talking about how Joe's so special. Mm-hmm. And I played against him in the ones. Like, nah, he ain't special.
He got drafted, like, in them first years in Phoenix.
I'm like, nah, he ain't got it. Then what happened? Because he became... No, no, no. When he was in Boston, I was like, nah.
Like that, them late years in Phoenix.
I'm like, okay.
Wait, what?
Johnson got drafted to Boston?
Yeah, he got drafted to Boston. Yeah. And I was like, oh, he trashed. He trashed. Phoenix, I'm like, okay, he can hit a jump shot. They sent him with Q Rich.
When he got to Atlanta, what they said about him in a draft.
I was like, what?
Like, I was like, oh, he's a point guard, shooting guard, three, ISO guy.
And he's 6'8, 250. And you start realizing, if they don't put you in your right spot. It's over.
It's over. When he had the point and they put him in, he doing a pick and roll. Like, I'm sitting there like, who the fuck is this dude?
It's a cheat code.
He became like, he became a, like, he was like here when he was.
In Atlanta, just the ball in his hand.
It was here. Elite, bro.
Now it was like, okay, I can see why he was dangerous in Phoenix and why they paid him so much because.
His tool bag was so untapped. It was just ridiculous. They're like, no matter who we get, he can kind of perform. Then it became like he's an ISO player. What the fuck?
Like, yo, I thought he was just a corner nigga that just shot threes.
Oh, he's an ISO guy. Now I got to guard. Like, he was. I used to hate that, bro.
I used to hate driving by people or do something and people be like, damn, so?
Like, niggas. I played point guard, bro. Hey, y'all had to play against Tyreek Evans? You got to tell me about that. I knew Tyreek was nice, but I didn't catch him in a sense.
We played Tyreek. We had to do some tournament in... Might have been bronze tournament in Ohio. Might have been. Or it was Pittsburgh.
Either that or the Pittsburgh tournament. I can't remember what it was in Pittsburgh, but there was a tournament out there, too.
But... We go out there to play them.
Everybody was talking about it because I was a big point guard. So they're like, shit, Tyreek Evans is top three in the country. I'm unranked at the time. So we're playing against them. That was the first time I had played against somebody that wiped.
The wipe hand. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, that's crazy. It drove me insane.
Like, that's the first time, like, literally in the game, like, I came out my stance and was like, he.
Can't do that.
I'm like, he can't grab my hand when I'm on my way to the basket guarding him. I'm like, I can't jump because he just grabbed my wrist. I'm like, you letting him grab my wrist.
And they like, what? You know what I'm saying? Like, shut up. What are you talking about?
But I'm like, bro, like, he grabbing my wrist. But I was like, I have never seen somebody. And then I looked at the tape. The man arms is so long. Yeah, they're down to his knees, bro. It was so effortless for him to hold me off, do little tricks and shit, but he had a handle that, it was like.
You remember Chris Colvin that played at Whitney Young? Of course, from Whitney Young, yeah. But they got, yeah, he got this. Anybody got a dance, yeah, they got a dance.
Because if he put it out here, you seeing that it's so much space, it's like, if he go like this, he could.
Lay this up. But he only have to jump to lay it up. so it's like I.
Gotta over commit a little bit and he plays snatch and then he does the KD and brings it with his left hand and then if you do go for it he just stop while your dumb ass running that way he stop and just let that bitch he was shooting that bitch to the moon dog and the whole everybody that came with him they all have beards.
And shit they were like I didn't watch Sacramento. I didn't watch Sacramento. I didn't watch Sacramento.
I didn't know nothing about them. I didn't watch Sacramento. The game plan, it was one of them. Sacramento was one of them teams where we just put the fucking names up there. And I remember we going through the layup line and then we started. And I'm like, hey, who do I got?
Evans?
Like, you see the niggas up here, and I'm looking for the little guard that's going to be coming at them up on Evans.
And I was like, hey, Deshaun, where the fuck is Evans? They was like, the nigga next to you. This big buff-ass nigga. This sick, sick-ass nigga.
And he's standing tall.
He's standing tall as shit. And he's not wiry. Pause.
He's sitting there looking like this, and I'm sitting here like.
And then you're like, and he got a yo-yo?
And I'm sitting here like, who the shooting guard?
And it was like green.
Like, God damn. Who the fuck put this fucking 2K team together?
So I'm sitting here and I'm like, I'm still mad today. And I'm sitting here and I'm like, all right, cool. Probably soft.
First play put me in the post. And I never get really put in the post like that. Like Andre Miller put me in the post, but he going up. Like if a kid put me in the post, he's going to pass it.
Right. He put me in the post. Baron. He turned and faced me, bro. And Jamal Crawford me. First play. What, the hop step? Nigga. Nigga, what? Off the step off? Got me in the post, bro. Turned and faced. Went behind the back. and bounce it right back. Boom!
He is nice.
I said, hell no.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I ain't gonna lie, fool. I'm fine with it. Think about it.
This is the first time you've seen him.
I'm about to fuck out you. No, bro. He turned his face and bounce it. Boom, boom.
Man, I damn near touched a nigga out of bounds, bro. I slid out of bounds. The fan nigga, that was a good move.
I was like, what the fuck is that? That was 2011 when he was getting his 25-5. That was still low-key. That was his rookie season. I'm saying they were only averaging 90 points per game at the time. Even when he was in Memphis, bro. I'm just salty that... In Indiana, when he hooped in Indiana, he's shooting 40% from the three, dog.
But it's like he just never got to a team that was going to be in the playoffs long enough for the rest of the league.
They fucked him over because they took away his superpower. Like, that was my bad. That was my bad. Like, I'm coming back, and I took 20-something shots. Oh, nigga, no, fuck that.
You're not going to big boy me. I seen evolution. I was like, oh, these are the new guards coming in. Everybody's 6'6 and above. 6'6, big, strong, buff.
That's what I thought. I blew my ACA. And then what ended up happening, that's what I told you. You come in the next year, I'm like, yo, you PG. That's the new wave. Big niggas coming in, controlling everything, stronger than everybody. I could see everything.
About the movement, that was the, when I met the executive in real time, that nigga made me touch out of bounds, bro. On a one dribble.
Yeah, and when you're a big guard, dude. Because I was there when y'all went to, I think it was D. Will Camp back in the day. Even when I played point guard in college, it wasn't like, sure, we were good, but it's like, bro, y'all niggas is 6'1. We literally 6'7. Do you understand what I'm saying? So it changes the game and everything. You see how it's evolved now to the point guards going from being 6'5-6'6, now being 6'9-6'10.
But it's the differences.
How many years behind they were when the first wave came in? Russell Westbrook. When Russell Westbrook came, it gave everybody. He ended up getting hurt a little bit, but I even heard about he got hurt a little bit.
That 2008-9, but Barron still little? And he had to pass the ball. No, no, compared to now. Barron was the first. Okay, so the first wave of real elite guards, athletic, was Barron Was the Baron Steve Francis Mulberry.
Yeah. But they was under the old rule of pass that ball. Yeah.
Now, I snuck in as a scorer and played point, but I wasn't that athlete. Yeah, you wasn't called. They was athletes. Like, if Steve Francis and Mulberry, if those guys had the green light like me.
Yeah.
They was on a whole nother... They were like the Westbrook before those came in.
So I kind of like.
I got to lived a little bit. Then the John Walls came in, but that was still me. The Tyree, the West.
That 6-6, the 6... Very different.
The 6-4 without shoes. That 6-4 without shoes. That group that was coming in. And Livingston and all of them. I was sitting there like.
Man. Before I blew my ACI, I swore to God. I told him, I told him, yeah, you point guard. He's like, you good.
You go in there.
He told me, he's like, listen, you go look at the top guards. You're going to put your stats next to them. He said, nigga, you can fire your agent.
Yep. I swear to you, he sat me down like, listen, I can see it. Look at your height. Look at your weight. Look at your waistband. That's what they want.
He's like, when I was in there sleeping in the gym just so they could pay me the number.
Get your money. Line up. Be like, the league is going to this. Go to that. I've seen it so early, dog. We didn't play. You had 20 and 10. Not only did you have talent, but they were listening to you. You were able to lead a team. You was a point guard. I came out of college a point guard.
The difference was, though, he played point guard because they was like honestly, you're the best with the ball. For their team, it's like he can play point guard. But if you give Evan a point guard, he's actually way better as the scorer where you're setting him up and now nobody can do nothing with him. But if you make him play point, you actually give the other team a chance. Because it's like you're making him do two.
It's the Edward shit where you make him do two jobs.
Yeah, but you also just need, like. And he got to, now he got to look out. You need just a flat shooter. Yeah, you need a flat shooter. But that's why I said I want to go to Golden State when it came down to a decent floor. But also, too, when you come down to playing PG or whatever else, you have to make sure the system is right for a point guard to make sure it occurs. So, not even saying for myself, even for you, it's like, hey, if you got a 6'6 point guard, you're not taking advantage of him at least a couple times a quarter in the post, you bugging.
Then you wanted to get drafted to us.
Yeah, so this is what I always said. I didn't want to go to Philly. I wanted to go either one, three, four, five, six, seven. Just not Philly. Yeah, not Philly. And then when I went to Philly, I never shot a– I mean, when we were younger in middle school, I used to shoot standstills. But, like, I came in with the rock in my hand, and I got judged off shooting a three-point shot. Yeah, it was weird as shit. Like, I look at people, I say, like, you're a good player in your position.
Yeah.
In this position, you're a megastar. Yeah, yeah.
Right?
There's guys like that. Like, they're just not in the right position.
That they belong in. And Joe Johnson was an example.
And Joe Johnson, as just a normal shooting guard, you're a regular. Put the ball in your hand, shooting guard. That means coming off plays, getting the iso, being that you're a fucking different player.
Making 30 reads a game. And that's when you look at him. Because he was so smart. Like, did you ever see his playbook?
That nigga had back screens, flares with the fake flare pass to.
Get back to come back. I was like, what kind of elite shit is this? Oh, no, that wasn't Wichita. That's Reeves. That ain't play. No, no, they had something. They probably had a pin down. That's like saying that Steph and Draymond got to play. They ain't got no fucking idea. They know how to play. That's like KD.
KD don't got no play. You're going to overcommit or you're not going to overcommit.
Mellow playbook was so easy, just couldn't stop him. He just wasn't easy. Mellow a fucker.
Mellow the first thing I see.
Three down. Three down. We'll have a playbook, dog. We got a whole play for you, my nigga. That nigga will stop and post up dead in.
Front of your face.
Imagine so just put it here I got time for this.
That's another thing when you get to the league and you like used to like fall on the rules and you just meet niggas like bro this is not how we hooped in practice you just hooping they do whatever they want no no but I'm just saying like shout out to Melo but I'm like hey in standards this would never work if I stopped and said hey give it here this is where I'm good at I'm subbing out.
Like but why you think practice was so irrelevant I Because this shit is practice shit.
Hey, man, to all the kids at home, man, practice is not irrelevant. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Practice is relevant in your world. Yeah, but.
In the NBA, and there's a Luka, I want you to look at Brunson's plays, look at Shea plays, look at Luka's plays.
What you think they're doing in practice? You think they sit in two hours to let Luka do what Luka's doing, like he's doing a game?
No.
They're doing regular plays... That's not going to be played in the game. And that's what I used to say about situations. We're not doing all these plays. We're not running down screens for Bronny James and doing all this.
No, it's give me the ball, sit your ass in that corner, you go to whatever you feel comfortable with, and I'm going to play basketball.
That's what I used to play. Right up. When I used to play on Trailblazers, I used to feel that same way when we scrimmaged. I'm like, what's the point of scrimmaging if they ain't scrimmaging? We go out for a game, they ain't saying, okay, but this ain't how we really finna hoop. Like, shit, I want to hoop.
How are we going to hoop? How are we going to hoop? So when we sit there, I'm like, hey, there's no point in practicing because this is not how we're going to play. I don't even want to show up today and shoot 10 shots in a worthless-ass practice. It ain't how we going to win. When we go play in the season, they ain't say, oh, you have 20. Nigga, we not finna win like that. That's not real basketball.
I've never seen that shit.
I'll never see that shit again. But it's respect to the game and knowing your role. Even when we sat there.
I don't know, though, because there was games like we played the Hawks.
Right.
And there was certain series that I felt like because I used to feel that where it's like.
Fuck, what am I doing? Like, what the fuck? Like, nigga, they finna shoot ads.
If y'all finna average 30 and 40 through the playoff, fuck, I need to be here for. Then you play somebody and the Hawks was just like, if we gonna lose today, Iman gotta beat us. And it's like, I'll be goddamn if I get in the game and I ain't got no rhythm because we just ain't practicing. I ain't sharp.
But practice was for the players. That was their game sometimes.
Oh, yeah, you can't take offense that Bron taking it off today.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no, but naturally what I'm saying is like when I go into the game, I don't give a fuck if I hit five straight threes and Dame is cold. Do you know where I'm going? To the corner. to Dame, and I'm going straight to the... You say, have you hit five straight? I'm saying if I hit five straight threes and we're coming down to when you understand your role, dog, I'm saying... Hey, Evan, stop lying on me. Five straight threes is aggressive.
I ain't gonna lie.
I was gonna say... I was gonna say.
We fucked past you for five straight times.
I must have really fucking with you, bro. You know what I mean?
That's what I'm saying.
You said that you wouldn't even be in a position to get five of them.
Get that shit off, yeah. Oh, bro, because I get five assists.
No, no, which.
Brings me to my next statement. That shit ain't real. I'm going back to Dame. 100% though. I'm going back to that start and it's a respect.
It's only once you start understanding your role as far as winning goes. Now, if you can't accept that we're going to win the game, the people that have a problem doing it, it's like they don't believe that at the end of the game, we're going to win. They feel like I should be helping to do more.
They believe that it's fair. This is all fair.
I'm right.
Now think about it when practice. How many niggas you ate up in practice?
All the time.
They got the greatest practice player of all time.
Can we get the legos right? But that's what I'm saying. Like, people don't realize. And I always said this. I said, there's a reason there's no Kobe Bryant mimics. There's no Jordan mimics.
Hakeem had the dream shake, right?
There's no Brunson's coming off the bench because those elite guys, they not doing that in practice. They're working on their individual games and then in practice, they just there.
They just there. So this guard.
That I got to guard my backup, whooping my ass.
Because I got to save, I got to save it for whoever. And that's what I'm saying. And that's what I'm saying.
So my team ain't really getting the real me. Our starting five, everybody, we running plays we're never going to run in the game. Doing drop folds with the five with the spin around. Our deal, give it to him, do the split screen right here, do that, and back and go, we go. And then the game start, nigga, draw that play up. Man, if you don't get the fuck out of.
Here with that. You only got seven minutes to do it when he's off the court. Give me the ball, goddamn it.
And it's only 13 seconds on the shot clock. They done brought the shit up. We done, yeah, fuck that.
Yeah, you right. But it's, I'm just saying, I've seen Melo. That's where Kaminga, that's where Kaminga get fucked up. I've seen Melo. I have brought the ball up. And we're giving this nigga the ball anyway.
And Melo will stop his cut because he talking to whoever he talking to. And to stop and post it up dead in front of my dribble. Like, bro, like, nigga, I ain't even got enough space.
I'm giving it to you anyway.
Yeah, but I'm going to turn it over at this point.
But he used to be like, give me that bitch. Like, I don't need. Like you said, I don't need this place, yo. This is too much. I don't want to wait. I don't want to run around. I don't want to do it. I don't need the deepest. Get into me right here and get the fuck out. Move. And that's facts, man. Bro.
Sometimes you got to get out of the way. Sorry, Joe. You left early, so we was giving the chat the time back. Oh, we with the chat. We with the chat, man.
Yeah, you left early yesterday, so we was like, you know what?
We still went over you. We got to make it up. We got to make it up. We got to make it up. And chat, sorry. We was doing that. We had to make it up for you yesterday because he has somewhere to go. We love basketball. You can do what you do. Sorry.
I have some personal matters to attend to, but time to try and finesse some bread on Polymarket. This is Put That On Something. We'll give you a trade on the Polymarket app. You got to pick a side and put that on something. So Warriors have missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, including last year when they finished ninth in the West after getting smacked by the Suns in the play-in.
Beautiful to watch for some.
So Warriors ended the season with a healthy Steph, but will be without Jimmy Butler until at least Black History Month. Porzingis may or may not have a virus that we know very well. But right now, 60% of traders think the Dubs will return to the playoffs this season, while 61% of traders think the Warriors will be at the crib for the postseason once again. But let's take it to the couch, and we'll start with you. Will the Warriors make the playoffs this season? Very competitive Western Conference. Steph Curry got us to your extension, so did Brandon Brzezinski.
Yes, I believe the Beige Assassin will lead them to the playoffs this year. Thou does not quarrel with the honorable Steph Curry. Okay. Get us moving.
Will the Warriors make the playoffs this season? Yes, I think they're going to be at 10th seed. That's eligible for playing. They will play their way into the AFC.
Yeah, I think they're going to play in and then play their way into the AFC.
Okay, but they'll finish 10th in the West and play their way to the AFC in the play-in tournament. You said Jimmy Butler coming back in February, right? That's the earliest he can come. Knowing how dudes are doing nowadays, I can very well see him not just posted up at the crib.
Jimmy Butler's coming back. I think so. He's just out of his mind, bro. I believe he's just coming back, bro. He might come back before that. He ain't got shit else to do but hoop. In my opinion, I think he's coming back. Yeah, he probably will. But, uh, It's tough.
I don't want to go against them because of their tradition and everything, but I just can't see them. I think they're going to be on the couch with us. Hopefully Steph come on. Hopefully Steph come on Gills Arena if they don't pan out.
Come on. Staff pulled out the gills. He needs to pull up the hall. Oh, has he? We went to Baltimore to go see him. We went to Baltimore. That's hard. He had to sign. This is when he signed to a shoe company. No, you got to have him. You got to get him to stop. He signed to Fox. I need my dog to stop his whole day and come in. When he signs, when he signs. No, we need him to stay at the hotel and everything. I need the whole shit. Do the hotel stuff. I need the whole shit. I need the whole shit. We will postmate you and me. Nah, he'll stay here. He'll stay here.
We'll go to the hotel. You give him the crib? Yeah. Yeah, man. Yo, that's the light skin, man. Did you see the stuff? Light skin, man. You know what I mean? He would come in the fridge and take it. Yeah, he'd get the bottom bunk in the prison cell. You know what I'm saying? Now we went to his camp. Okay, okay, okay.

Hold on. Boom. All right, let's start. We got a lot of regulars here now.
So first question comment is from Marcus Thompson 301. Do you think y'all could play basketball in the 50s with all the hate and still focus and love the sports the same?
As long as I can. Never mind. I ain't going to say that. I mean, as long as I can live like will and just enjoy myself, like I don't think. Oh, well, yeah. Yeah, just kick it. Like, you're talking about, like, all the discrimination and all that goofy shit. I think... Doodoo smeared on the walls in bed? Yeah, I mean, as a black man, I feel as though you kind of already are aware of the obstacles you face, and that's just modern day. I don't... Not in the 50s? I guess they can hit you and all that crazy shit. I couldn't live in the 50s.
Do you think you could play basketball in the 50s with all the hate and still focus and love the sport the same?
Nah.
No? Why? No internet? I'd have been dead and gone, kid. It got rid of me immediately. I'm the worst.
I always got some shit to say. I always got a thought. Totally not going for the, like, Troublemaker.
You can't do that. Not even troublemaker. They would call you a troublemaker. Right is right, wrong is wrong, and I'd be down for the... I'd be the one that'd be like, fuck it, we can sit in jail. I'd be that one. Every city, you're in jail. But it'd just be like... No, I understand.
Don't get me wrong, I could follow plenty of rules, but it's like, I can't... I don't know if I could've handled somebody coming up and doing it.
Like, you better than me because of your skin. That's just wild. Like, that's wild as fuck to me. Like... I would have been an Uncle Tom, probably. Maybe. Yeah. Maybe. And they wasn't even getting that. Somebody get hung, you're like, all right. Yeah, you know, hung, slain. Yeah, I'm good. Yeah. I learned my lesson. That's a wild ass lesson. Sometimes you learn your lesson just from watching. I'm a visual learner. Yeah, that's uncomfortable. Like, nigga, let's go out here and play.
You shook him, talking shit. He dead. You know what? What sport am I supposed to be in?
I'm a ball boy. Ball boy.
That's how a ball boy get like that.
Ball boy.
Yes, sir. Yeah. I don't think I could have did it, though. The shit that they was hooping through.
Though, real talk, to not have no fucking cold tub, they ain't have.
No fucking masseuses. You was in the 50s in shock. But I'm saying to have all that and then have racism? Yeah.
But you got the smoke cigarettes and drink beer in the locker room during games?
Oh, they have the real cocaine, too. They have the real one, that good one. Your fascination. Long by the day. I'm just saying, if you're going to go through racism, better go in there with the pure. Uncut. Uncut. Pure. So we've got... Now you got fit and all.
You trying to get away and you gone.
Those are tough videos to watch on the internet. Bro, I be looking at people like.
The lean. Yeah, that lean. I just can't lean like that long. I already got back issues.
You don't feel that. You ain't gonna feel it. You don't feel none of that. Get you some of that 50. I'm good. I'm good.
All that back pain stopped. That's why they on that 50. I just get high on life. And love and peace, like we get from the chat here at Gills Arena. So we got a question from NoLimJD. NoLimJD, not sure what that means, but that's the name. Is Prime Bradley Beal a better scorer than Shea?
Damn, that's a crazy question. We have a chat that is unique. Better than Shea? Shea or Shaq? Shaq. Oh, I thought you said Shaq. Oh, I thought you said Shaq too.
Yeah, low-key that motherfucking Bradley Beal. Them couple years were crazy. He was athletic, explosive, fast twitch going.
He used to hand off really well. Yeah, hand off. He knew how to. He scored a lot off the ball. And then that was until he was able to play with the ball. And it's like, bro, he can give you a whole game's worth. It was just. Only thing I'll say about Brad sometimes, some years where he was killing when he was getting 60s, it was just unwatchable basketball.
His team? Yeah, only one person shooting. I feel like it was an unwritten rule to be like, we were tuning in to see what Bradley could score that night. You know what I mean? No. When he played for the Wizards, you weren't expecting him to win. That's what I'm saying. We were not tuning in to watch. I'm saying if you were going to watch a Wizards game back then, You're going to see, like, maybe. John Wall turned one down and dunked on somebody. I'm saying, but John wasn't playing it. I'm saying when John got hurt.
He was hurt. I'm discussing those couple years, yeah. He led the team. I mean, he led the league in scoring those two years back.
Yeah.
But I'm saying, like. That's a good one. I got to go back. You know why? Because that's 31 then. Yeah. Oh, that's crazy. You're right. You got to think.
About some of the score when people, and I think that's why the new school kind of like, oh, like, we were scoring 31 in the era we didn't.
Supposed to score 31 in.
When you think about Jordan's 30s back then, like, that's 75% of the offense.
You couldn't stop a dude that has 75% of the offense.
Right?
So, like, looking at it now, where y'all still post the score because you're going.
Up and down. 125 out of 30. Yeah, so.
Yeah, he was playing in.
That 100, 100 area. 25 points a quarter. That's what he's trying to keep you to.
If they thought, if they, like, some of these guys need to go back to early 2000s and look how simple A.I.
Cole T-Max scored. Yeah.
And then use that and take your speed of the game, apply those rules.
To your, you're averaging 40. There's a difference. You guys are dribbling fucking 500 times.
Back then it was 60 to 100. It would just get to the yams, go. We're not wasting time. We're not trying to bop, bop, bop, bop, bop.
You're allowed to hit them more and more.
Yeah, so like if you take it and make it simpler for you, without all the dribbling, you guys are averaging 40.
The game paces for you guys. There was more defenders back then, too.
But you're not allowed to do as much resistance as a defender now.
Nowadays, too. It's freedom of movement. Yeah, I love it. Yeah. You're not lying to me, Brett. 1,000%. Even illegal defense. Yeah. Two motherfuckers off the court. Yeah. I think Brad Bill was elite, man. Yeah. For sure. But, I mean, just this past year, SGA's the first guard to shoot 55% for a season. Well, I think averaging 30 right off the bat. And averaging 30 to, like... To do it for a couple years at a high, high level and you're the reason why you were able to change the system, I mean, change that culture that was post-KD-ish is hard, bro.
So the question is, is he a better scorer? Yeah, than Shea. I gotta watch. I can give you that. I can give you that Monday. I gotta watch a whole bunch of Bradley Bill. I just wait.
It might be just because Shea's been playing in the playoffs the whole time and the championships, so I'm programmed to judge the playoff version, I would have to have the playoff version of Bradley Beal. I'm going to say yes, and then I'm going to just go watch a bunch of Bradley Beal, put them both together.
We definitely got to come back to that. I'm going to just watch them both together and see, but the consistency of Shea is unmatched. Exactly. That's your homework for this? Yeah. Yeah, but the 21-year-old Bradley Beal. And I feel like it's more gravity with Shea. That was 2015. John broke his wrist.
Brad Bill took over. What was the average? 27-7-7 versus Hawks? That series? He's 21 years old going crazy. So, I mean, when you do that playoffs, he was pretty impressive. After that, I believe... John got hurt and you were never able to see what a... Yeah, what he could have been. Playoff Brad Bill could be besides me.
That's why I said it's kind of unfortunate because I don't really have a lot to go off of. I got a lot of Shea film for the playoffs. And it's like, I know what he does, but that's why I rank players higher in my mind because I'm like, when it come down to it, when it's time to shape shift, can you fucking do it? Yeah.
But Gil, that was kind of the reason after that playoff run, that was kind of the conversation where it became like, is it John... Or Brad. Or Brad's team, because I feel like the team, or Tyler, we went through a playoff run with this kid, and he's elite. We need to go through him than going through... You love ball-dominant point guards, but then guys, when they complain, they hate it because the ball's going to start with Johnny.
He decides who to pass to and everything else like that, but that was a hell of a run for Brad Bill, but I think that was his original peak to really scout to see who he was in the end.
