I got my jazz hands out. You got your jazz hands. You're ready to roll. I'm ready to recap.
Ready to recap.
I am ready for Halloween.
Yeah, how did the decorations go?
I have to get my indoor decorations together now. That'll probably be this weekend's activity because I actually.
Don't have anything.
But yeah, my front yard has the return of the 12 foot werewolf that howls.
And is motion activated with lights.
And then this year we have a new edition of an animatronic scarecrow that is lit from within, like in the chest and in his hair.
And he is. And he talks and he has a lantern that he like raises.
Kind of like the old man at the bottom of the hill in Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
You know what I mean? Where he's like, shh. Yeah, yeah. It's kind of that. And he talks and he's like, shh. You can't tell. It's a whole thing.
I've got a little graveyard. I've got some lights in my trees and around the house, purple and orange.
Amazing. Yeah. I mean, I am.
ready you're so ready you're like I don't want to wait 31 days I want to do it now why don't you wait 31 days it's over no no celebrate now honestly the fact that I didn't have a chance to do it yesterday or that I kind of screwed around and I didn't do it yesterday a little mad at myself because I want it today um it's okay there's time it's okay tomorrow just get it done before you leave town and yeah tomorrow there you go tomorrow what does Pascal think of all this? Like he's not, he's just, he's.
Like, whatever, whatever.
Because I don't ask him to do any of it other than like, help me get stuff down from the garage or put it away. You know, he knows that like, this is, I love decorating. It is, I inherited that love from Janice Sweeten.
Oh, Janice Sweeten. She would decorate the house for every holiday growing up.
So like, I love that. And my kids love it because that's what I've always done. But yeah, he's just like, I told him basically the night before, I was like, oh, by the way, all of the Halloween stuff is going in the front yard tomorrow.
And he just texts back, oh boy.
So yeah.
Yeah. He's like, okay, I'm ready.
I mean, he knows this is the start of the season. We go here, then we go fall, then we're very quickly into holidays. And that requires, you know, a couple of Christmas trees and outdoor lighting.
And yeah.
As long as he doesn't have to get on a ladder or have like a staple gun, he's supportive.
I know it's not his thing.
That's okay.
So I find other people to help.
Oftentimes my friend Emma Emma and I have decorated together for years she also loves it so we just you know that's kind of our thing and the kids will half-ass help for about 10 minutes and then be like I'm bored and then leave which has been consistent over 17 Christmases or.
So so yeah that sounds just like the kids they get really excited about it which is fine because I'm.
Like I don't don't put that that's not where that goes don't put that there you know and then I can yeah yeah I'm a little bit of a control freak You have opinions about where things go. I know where I like the things.
It's your thing.
I try and let it go a little bit. But anyway, I am looking forward to this weekend to get my Halloween decor and really lean into the mood.
Yeah. Lean into it and just spooky it up. Why not? Yes. Spooky it up. Lean into it. Yeah. I don't have a segue for this, but it's sort of related, like thinking of costumes and Halloween. I have exciting news, which I started to share with you on the flight home from Detroit, that I have located the original designer of the Bacon and Eggs Kimmy Gibbler scarf.
Yep.
And I'm very excited. She's making me 20 scarves to bring to 90s Con.
Hopefully.
Like, she's hand-making them. So, like, one by one, these aren't, like, mass-produced. Like, I could get cheap knockoffs anywhere. Yes. I'm like, I want the original... designer the original crocheter um to make me more scarves to bring to 90s cons so she's doing it I said if you can't get it done that's fine but um to send me however many.
Yeah however oh my gosh before I leave.
And so she's going to and like she's so thrilled and I'm so thrilled and I love this is such a long time coming this is 10 years in the making yeah yeah and there's.
You know there are there are other bacon and egg scarves that we've seen but this is The official by the original artist that the Kimmy.
Gibbler wore on the show. There's only one original.
Yeah.
And she's making, she doesn't even really crochet anymore. She just sells the patterns to her scarves.
Right.
But she's making an exception and bringing in some help too. I mean, Kimmy has asked for the bacon and eggs.
It's got to happen.
It's so great. She's just such a lovely, lovely person. Her name is Stephanie. And I just I just love the this is like a budding friendship. And who knows where it will go? I just wanted to like, let's start with 20 and we'll see where this goes. see if the fans want these scarves. If not, like, I just think it's great that... Because I see a lot of knockoffs at these cons, too.
There's a lot of knockoffs. They're cute. They're cute. They're fine. But they're usually too thin or they're not quite so... You know.
Right.
It's a little Timu. Yeah, we want to make sure it's the original.
true to life bacon and egg.
Scarf yeah yeah so that this.
It made that's gonna be amazing so there's gonna be like 20 people at 90s con it's gonna be like the rush for cabbage patch kids they're gonna people are gonna trample over them each other it's gonna be waiting outside for days i'm gonna.
Camp out waiting for a bacon and egg scarf.
I don't know about that but you never know people.
Have flown from all over the world to meet us you never know when they might camp out waiting for a scarf. I'm not suggesting it, people. Please do not do that.
Don't.
Don't do that.
Well, I will be wearing my original bacon and egg scarf. I know the little girls or any little kids are so excited when I say, would you like to wear my scarf for the selfie? And now you can get your very own bacon and egg scarf. So, yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited about it. It just tickles me. It tickles me.
And that sounded weird. It tickles me inside.
Okay, well, that's good. That's great. Anyways.
You want to do a recap now before I say anything that I shouldn't?
Okay, great.
I don't know where this is going, so let's quickly pivot.
No, we're good.
I'll tell you that much. Into professionalism.
That's, wait, in professionalism?
Yeah, no.
Okay. Okay, now you can start.
Sorry. Welcome back to How Rude Tannerito's.
I'm Andrea Barber. And I'm Jodi Sweetin, coffee mug in hand.
And I'm on day cool, so I don't know where this is going. Oh boy!
Get ready. Buckle up, y'all.
Today we're discussing Season 7, Episode 16, Joey's Funny Valentine. It originally aired January 24th, 1994. And it goes a little something like this.
I had just turned 12.
Oh, yeah. Twelve. Oh, my God. This is the year I graduated high school.
Ninety-four. Oh, yeah.
Which is wild. It makes me realize how close we are to the end of the series, which is crazy. Did I do the synopsis? No, I did not. It goes a little something like this. Joey thinks he has found his dream girl, comedian Roxy Martin, but she may not be so great after all. It was directed by John Tracy. It was written by Adam I. Lapidus. And we have one guest star, Felicia Michaels as Roxy Martin.
She's a stand-up comedian and a comedy grand champion on Star Search. That's right. She won Funniest Female at the American Comedy Awards. And she's performed stand-up on Comedy Central, Showtime, MTV, and A & E. We did an interview with her earlier this year in February 2026. So check that out and hear all about her time on Full House and her comedy chops. Yeah. She was lovely.
And I promise she actually is funny.
She really is. Right, right.
Yeah.
Despite this episode and like she really is.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, she really is a funny person. And a great actress because she did play the role very well of the awkward comedian.
Trying to fit in with the boyfriend's family. I mean, I'm sure she's done a bazillion voiceovers. Oh, yeah.
She's got the voice for it, doesn't she?
Yeah.
Such a great voice for it.
Mm-hmm. So we start with the teaser.
Okay.
Michelle asks Stephanie, Steph, what's a vowel? And Stephanie answers, anything that's not a consonant. And you're wearing different glasses today. Different than your normal Where's Waldo glasses?
Yeah, the Waldos I think we've left in 1993. Maybe I think finally I was like, can I not wear these?
Yeah.
So you're speaking up for yourself now.
Yeah, yeah.
I think Steph's, yeah, she's going a little more subtle.
They're still round, but they're just not as dark. Yeah.
They're Waldo. They were Waldo glasses.
They were Waldo glasses. This is much more mature. Which is great.
If you want to rock them, go for it. But I think Steph is moving on.
Well, the Where's Waldo glasses was like basically the best continuity for Stephanie over the last seven seasons. The only continuity of the entire show. So they're like, let's change it up. Let's do something different for season seven. So DJ walks in and Michelle asks her, what is a consonant? And DJ replies, anything that's not a vowel. Michelle sighs.
I think it's time for me to work on my math. Suddenly, a large blue and yellow macaw flies through the open window unnoticed.
Of course it does. Of course it does.
Because parrots flying around through windows is something that no one would notice.
This is so full house. like we're in we're in the weird animal era again.
I mean if you any sitcom if it exists long enough we'll have at least eight to ten weird animal moments.
It does And I thought, who thought of this in the writer's room? How did this come about in the writer's room? Let's have a giant parrot.
You know what we need?
A bird.
Right, yeah.
You know what we don't have enough of? Animals.
The golden retriever is way too easy to write for. Let's bring in a parrot.
Yeah, something, yeah.
So DJ asks Stephanie if she can use her calculator. And the parrot says, hey, take a hike, toots. Which has to be Dave, right?
Toots? Toots?
Toots?
Toots?
Toots? Toots? Well, I said, this has to be Dave, so.
I wrote toots. No, it's like toots. Hey, toots. You know what I mean? I wouldn't be like, hey, toots. I mean, I would. That's what the kids call the dog, literally. Toot.
I don't know why. B.
But anyway.
If Dave's saying it, I'm going to pronounce it toots.
Okay. Hey, toots. Hey, toots.
Got it. Thinking it was Stephanie, DJ replies, a simple no would have been fine. The parrot whistles, I'm a pretty bird and you're not. The girls finally notice the parrot and Stephanie figures it must be lost. Comet comes in the room and starts barking at the bird. Easy, Comet, don't scare the bird, Michelle says. The parrot squawks back and spreads its wings, sending Comet whimpering under Michelle's bed.
I think the bird is safe for now, DJ jokes.
I feel like if a bird flew into your house and you had a golden retriever, that bird would be, there'd be feathers all over that room.
It would be a mess. You'd have a parrot flying every, trying to get out. It can't. I mean, you ever got, you ever got a bird in your house? Oh yeah.
Oh, they freak out.
Yeah.
They can't. Yeah.
I have had a bird in my house before. And then you can't get a parrot. Yeah.
I'm not going to lie. This parrot's kind of a, kind of a dick. Sorry. Who's this owner? Who's who belong? Who is this bird? Because you're not teaching it to be very nice.
Yes. Sid's got like a crazy sense of humor. So, yeah, it's nuts. Next, we're in the living room. Joey walks in with Roxy as they compare the worst comedy clubs they've performed in. Joey names the Giggle Barn in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Roxy reveals she's played there, too.
I wonder if that's real.
I wouldn't be surprised if it 100% is or was at some point. The names for comedy clubs are wild. Giggle Barn seems tame to me. That's what I'm saying. It's wild in its ridiculousness. The Giggle Barn, you know what I mean?
But you're like, I don't know. Yeah, we're in Iowa. It's got to be farm related.
Sure.
Yeah. Just throw in some giggles and some farmers and what could be better? That's a Friday night for me. Uh, Joey says, did the dancing chicken open for you? And Roxy jokes. Yep. The chicken killed. I laid the egg. Joey asks if she's ready to meet his family and tells her he's already told them all about her. Roxy immediately gets nervous. Oh, what exactly did you tell them?
Joey says, she takes.
This very seriously. Like there was something that she's hiding.
What's in your past Roxy?
What do you mean? What did you tell them? Did you tell them my full name?
Did you tell them my social security number?
Right. Did you do a background check? You didn't share a picture with them, did you?
Joey says he told them they've been dating for a couple of weeks and that she's the funniest person that they'll ever meet in their whole entire lives. Roxy sits down.
Hyperbole.
You told them that I'm funny? That's what I was afraid of.
You're a comic. What do you mean?
Well, the.
Okay, I'm sorry. I'm going to shut up now. I'm going to shut up.
She was like, you told them I'm funny.
Oh, dear God, it's what I make my living doing.
Not that.
I mean, I get that she's like, oh, no, no, I have to be funny.
The entire premise of the show.
Was built upon something that I was like, what?
Yeah. That's only the first problem with this episode.
We got that. We got carrots. It just gets worse. Let's just, yeah.
So, yeah, she's very concerned about this. Joey doesn't understand why this is a problem. But Roxy explains that while she's funny with him and her friends and on stage, she freezes when new people expect her to be funny.
Isn't stand up comedy just being in front of new people expecting you to be funny?
Every night. Yeah, that's literally just checking.
I was just making sure that that was OK.
Got it.
Got it.
I was clear.
But Roxy can't handle it. She says, I get all flustered and nervous. I clam up. I sweat in places I didn't even know have glands. And Joey points out that even glands are funny and tells her to relax.
Yeah, I'm not trusting his evaluation of the comedy. Glands?
Glands are funny, though.
I think you might certainly not think funny things are funny.
Joey points out that, oh, no, I already said that. Joey says, I can't believe the chicken was funnier than you. And Roxy says, you're such a goofball. Aw, shucks, Joey replies in his cowardly lion voice before they kiss.
Nothing gets you hot under the collar like the cowardly lion.
Take me away.
This is why Joey never has a permanent girlfriend because he's always doing these voices right before they kiss.
It doesn't work every time he does a Popeye or a Bullwinkle. He finds a chick making out with him. Look, there's a niche for everything.
There is. There's a niche for everything. And they seem like a good match on paper. You know, like they both are into comedy. She enjoys his voices. So they seem like a good match.
Except she doesn't like being funny.
You're right.
That's a red flag.
Next in the kitchen, Nikki and Alex help Danny fold laundry. And Danny praises them for doing such a good job. As a reward, he offers to let them help him shelf paper the shelf paper shelf. Which is the most Danny Tanner sentence ever. I'm like, wait, how many layers of shelving, papering are we? And I think of, I think of Janice Sweet and when I think of shelf paper, I'm sorry, I just do.
Because you know that she shelf papers everything before she moves into a house? Yes!
You can't unpack a kitchen.
Yes!
You can't get a new dresser.
I know!
And I'm like, I never, she was like, where's the shelf paper?
Yeah, it was like. It's a sin not to have shelf paper when you move into a new house.
And to be fair, to be fair, she would get nice pretty scented little shelf paper and and it would be lovely see jenny agrees you're right i'm not saying you're wrong i'm just saying i'm lazy right no janice is absolutely right it's just funny that that makes me think of the show because you know her yes yeah when i moved into this house i was shelf paper.
And i was like janice yeah yeah she would.
Yep i'll dismiss another don't use shelf paper.
Janice is proud you write a thank you note sherry barber's proud.
This is the.
Complete circle of our mothers.
Yes.
So Joey walks in with Roxy and introduces her to my best pal in the whole world and mildew's number one enemy, Danny Tanner. Danny scrambles to take off his dishwashing gloves to shake Roxy's hand and tells her Joey has been saying she's the funniest woman in the world. Roxy tries to joke. Oh, you know how wacky Joey is.
And Danny asks, thinking this is a setup for a joke. No. How wacky is he? Roxy freezes before answering. Well, he's just incredibly wacky. That's pretty wacky, Danny says, before offering her three kinds of tuna.
So his family's going to constantly be trying to involve her in a vaudeville skit all night.
You know what I mean? She doesn't even know.
Right.
She's just.
She's like, am I the straight man? What's happening?
Michelle asked her to do a knock-knock joke where she's the, yeah.
It's this poor woman.
So Roxy quietly tells Joey, see, I told you I was so nervous I couldn't think of anything funny. Just then, Jesse walks in wearing foil over his head for a hot oil hair treatment. You look like a pan of Jiffy Pop, Becky tells him. Joey introduces Roxy to Becky and Jesse. And Jesse explains that his hairdresser found split ends, so he needs six hours of hot oil treatment and a lot of words of encouragement. He suggests, if you could swing by the church on the way home and light a candle for my hair, that wouldn't hurt either.
Don't light it too close.
Becky tells Roxy that Joey has been talking about how funny she is and asks how she got started in comedy. Roxy says she comes from a funny family, prompting Becky to ask, how funny were they? Roxy answers awkwardly. They were so funny that we laughed regularly. And Becky doesn't know how to respond. Nikki and Alex walk in with underwear on their heads. I got a funny hat like daddy.
Nikki says.
That was a family tradition in my family.
If you got underwear for Christmas or a birthday, you put a pair on your head.
Wait, this is, you're joking.
Are you joking? No, I actually am dead serious. I have pictures of my family.
My aunt Linda, I don't know why, she started this in the family where she would put, she'd be like, oh, look, drawers.
And she'd put them on top of her head.
And so as a kid, there's pictures probably of myself, Janice Wheaton, her sister.
Janice too? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Janice participated in this? Maybe not Janice because she probably.
Didn't want to ruin her hair. Right, she got her hair done.
She doesn't want to ruin it.
But definitely my uncle, yeah, my cousins, it was a weird, stupid tradition where if you got underwear, because you did from your family at Christmas.
As one is wont to do, yes.
As one is wont to do, you put the underwear on your head.
Yes. That is, I love that sweetened tradition. I think I need to incorporate that into the Barber family tradition too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Add it to the funeral file.
So Jesse tells the boys it's not polite to wear underwear on your heads in front of a guest.
Unless they gifted it to you.
And Alex points out, look at your head. And Jesse says, well, foil is acceptable. When Jesse asks for the BVD berets, the twins refuse and run off with Jesse and Becky chasing after them. DJ Stephanie and Michelle come downstairs with a parrot on Stephanie's shoulder.
Of course I have the pitch. And you don't like birds either. You don't like birds.
It's not that I don't, I don't mind birds, but the thing about when a bird is very close to you, all you see is an incredibly sharp beak and like pointy little things.
And you're like my eyes. That's all I think of is my eyes. They're going to claw your eye out. And it was right. Yeah.
I was just like, I don't, you're, you can crack a nut with that. And now you're right. Like six inches away from my eyeball.
What did you remember about the trainer?
I remember that it pooped on me. It pooped on me. Oh, it did. Yep, during that scene. During that scene. And I was like, aww.
And I think, yeah, we had, luckily we had, you know, probably four of that shirt because. That's why they have multiples of shirts.
That's why, yeah. Yeah. For that exact one when the parrot poops on your shoulder. Yeah.
But, uh, I think because I was the only, like, I liked animals, so I was like, I'll do it. And I didn't, yeah, I didn't mind it, but I, it was, you know, you got to get used to a bird and, uh, Especially one that large.
Yeah. Yeah.
That was a very large parrot on your shoulder.
I think, you know, as an adult, maybe I'd feel a little bit better, but there's still, I mean, we had a bird on Fuller.
They're, you know, they're big.
Yes. We traded that storyline. There was something involving, was it birds or was it?
It was the hornbill in the mayor's office.
No, there was something, there was something else that involved a smaller bird in the kitchen and we trade, it was supposed to be Stephanie handling the birds and you were like, I don't want to do that. And so you gave it to me. It was Kimmy. I don't remember the storyline. I don't know the episode, of course, with my brain fog.
I think it might have been the mayor's bird.
Was it the mayor's bird? Where it got loose?
Anyway. I don't know.
Let's focus on this bird.
Yeah, we'll focus on this bird. Too many birds in Full House.
One bird at a time.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, you're thrilled. Just get your binoculars out.
So you're walking in. You got a parrot on your shoulder. After introducing them to Roxy... Danny asks why they have a bird.
Super calmly, by the way. He's very too, he's way too calm about this. Their reactions, they, I mean, they are, they just, they've calmed through anything.
No, this doesn't faze Danny. He's just like, oh, you got a bird on your shoulder.
My kids walked in with a parrot, with a macaw on their shoulder.
I'd be like, what?
Get outside. What is happening?
Especially Danny Tanner. He doesn't like, you know, dirty things in his kitchen. So, yeah, he's way too calm about that. DJ explains that the parrot flew in through their window and must be lost. Buy now, pay later, the parrot squawks. Joey recognizes him as Little Sid from Big Sid's electronics barn commercials and guesses there will be a reward for returning him. DJ, Steph, and Michelle immediately argue over who deserves the reward. DJ wants mall money. Stephanie saw him first.
And Michelle points out, he pooped on my bed.
I feel like the one wearing the parrot gets the reward.
That's a solid argument.
I'm taking the most risk here. I could have lost an eye.
Yeah, you could have poked an eye out.
Could have poked an eye out with that thing.
Joey stops their argument and reminds them they have company. The girls apologize and tell Roxy they're glad to meet her, mentioning again that Joey told them how funny she is. Yeah, he's been spreading the word, Roxy says. Michelle asks Roxy to tell them a joke. making her nervous again. Michelle starts a knock-knock joke, but expects Roxy to supply the punchline. Oh, I'm supposed to do the funny part, Roxy realizes. Oh, I'm supposed to do the funny part who, Michelle asks, still waiting for the joke. Roxy quickly says she has an audition and doesn't want to be late.
She doesn't have to go be funny in front of people she doesn't know.
This is not a good prep for an audition. Like, this was not... A good audition to the audition. Michelle doesn't. She's confused. She doesn't get it. Roxy or no. Joey kisses Roxy goodbye and wishes her luck. And she leaves. Just don't use that knock knock joke. Michelle warns her on the way out. After Roxy leaves, Joey explains that she wasn't funny because she was nervous about meeting everyone.
Danny and the girls assure him that it's OK and that Roxy seems nice. Joey says they can't really know Roxy until they see her in her element. And then he invites everyone to comedy night at the Smash Club on Sunday to watch her perform.
Because there's one club in town.
Well, only one. And it's now a comedy club. Everyone agrees to make a night of it. Give them a cracker, fathead. Little Sid squawks. And why don't we leave little Sid at home, Joey says as the parrot laughs. Next in the living room, Danny's on the phone ordering a two-hour dustbuster battery when Steve, DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle walk in after returning little Sid. Danny asks if the two Sids had a happy reunion. Oh, you should have seen the flapping and squawking, Stephanie says. Yeah, and the bird was pretty excited too, Steve adds. The girls reveal that big Sid offered them one item from his catalog as a reward.
DJ thinks the obvious choice is a big screen TV, but Stephanie argues they already have a TV and they should get a karaoke machine instead. I've always wanted one of those. What is it? Michelle asks. Stephanie explains that a karaoke machine plays music and shows the words so you can sing along. I knew it sounded cool, Michelle says.
DJ argues for 55 inches of pure viewing pleasure and asks Steve what he thinks.
And say anything.
Steve admits karaoke machines are a lot of fun, but then he sees DJ's reaction and quickly changes sides. Of course, nothing can possibly beat the thrill of watching Willard Scott bigger than life right in your own living room.
For those born in, you know, after the turn of the century, the last one. Yeah, Willard Scott was a weatherman and he actually started He was the first Ronald McDonald.
There's a picture of him dressed up as the first Ronald McDonald. Really? I didn't know that.
Yeah.
If you see it, it'll haunt you in your dreams. It is horrifying.
It's a scary Ronald McDonald?
Imagine a clown from 1955. You know what I mean?
And I don't like clowns.
I'm not a fan. It's not great. It's not great, and it's really frightening.
Okay. But it is Willard Scott. Okay. He should stick to the weather. So Steve says, I'm just going to flip through this catalog right over here. And he does. And DJ decides to settle the argument herself. I'm older.
TV.
Case closed. Stephanie protests and asks Danny if DJ can do that. She can't do that, Danny says. Dad says you can't do that, Stephanie taunts. Danny tells them, Michelle gets the deciding vote.
What?
Of course she does.
I leapt out of my chair at this one. I was like, why?
Danny, why does a seven-year-old or eight-year-old make the decision?
Like there's pure favoritism in this regard.
Yeah, I get it. And DJ and Stephanie are equally in disbelief as we are, Michelle. Danny says, yeah, the little blonde that lives upstairs. That would be me, Michelle says with a smile.
Just creating a monster.
I know. This is how it all begins, you know. This is the creation of Michelle Tanner. And does she sound like she has a cold or is it just because I have a cold?
Yeah, she does.
Okay.
She sounds like she has a cold.
No, she has a little cold.
My ears are also stuffed.
I think Mary Kate has the cold. I don't know what fashion it is.
There we go. Next, we are in the Smash Club. DJ tells Kimmy she has table six, but Kimmy refuses. No way. I don't want those losers. They complain. They're horrible tippers and they treat me like a slave girl. Fine, I'll take them, DJ says, before walking over to discover table six is actually her family.
I mean, Kimmy's not wrong.
Kimmy's not wrong. She's not wrong.
Nobody wants to deal with the tanners.
Backstage, Joey gives Roxy a hug before her set. Roxy tells Joey she hopes his family likes her performance because she worked them into her act. Joey thinks they'll love that and kisses her. Jesse walks in. Okay, enough of that. You guys ready?
This guy has room to talk. Making out in the living room all the time.
Now they're backstage when nobody's around and you say it's enough?
It's just peak Jesse. Peak Jesse. So Roxy says, it's now or never. And Jesse says, actually, it's now. So Kimmy interrupts to tell Jesse they're out of napkins. And Jesse says he'll handle it and tells her to run along and get lost. Kimmy replies, thanks for the pep talk. You're a real motivator. And I don't understand the... purpose of this exchange except to set up this next joke right here. Jesse takes the stage and welcomes everyone to comedy night. He announces that in an effort to preserve the environment, they're doing away with all paper napkins. It's use your sleeve night at the smash club. He introduces a very.
Hilarious. I don't know why you're complaining about.
That, Jess. It's brilliant. They probably just need something for me to do.
The whole episode would not have made sense without it.
Andrea's contractually obligated to be in this episode.
Right, right, right.
Let's just give her something to do.
So Jesse then introduces a very funny and talented young lady, Roxy Martin.
This felt a little condescending.
Roxy takes the stage. and says she's in a great mood because she's in a new relationship. Hi, Joey. She jokes that her friends wonder how she can date someone so obsessed with cartoons.
We're all wondering that, Roxy.
We're all wondering that for seven seasons.
We all have questions.
There's more to Joey than just silly voice impressions. There's also rude noises.
So that was the euphemism for fart noises? You couldn't say fart noises. You had to say rude noises.
Yeah, I don't know.
I thought, and I'm like, this is kind of true.
What else would a burp or a fart?
It has to be like an armpit fart or a, yeah, it has to.
Be a burp or a fart. Burps aren't, they're rude noises.
I'll take it. Okay. Roxy points out that Joey brought his family and asks them to take a bow. She introduces Danny and Becky from Wake Up San Francisco. And then she jokes, I've seen that show. Go back to bed, San Francisco. As the audience laughs, Danny and Becky exchange an annoyed look. Unfortunately, when you meet them in person, there's no mute button, Roxy says. I mean, she only met them for like three minutes.
Right, I'm like, damn, that's like, yeah. She can't be funny, but she's.
Deeply like zeroed in on their character flaws.
And what, yeah, what, yeah.
Roxy moves on to Danny's daughters, joking that DJ, Steph, and Michelle have typical sister fights involving eye gouging, hair pulling, and the occasional ball peeing hammer to the head. They're like the Three Stooges in pantyhose. I hate pantyhose. Wait, you hate pantyhose?
I hate pantyhose. Never wore them. But also, why would the three of us be in pantyhose? We're children.
This.
It's okay.
I'm sorry. I keep interrupting.
No, no. I've got notes about the set. We'll go over that after this.
Right.
And also, I've never seen these children fight that badly. Well, I mean, there was a hole in the wall. Maybe the running around, maybe the oat boats moment.
Maybe the oat boats, but yeah, it wasn't hair. I don't know. Roxy was reaching for this one.
Well, but it was obviously a joke. I don't know why they took it so personally.
Because it's the Tanners.
They can dish it out, but they can't take it.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay. So Michelle initially laughs along until DJ tells her, Michelle, that's not funny. She's making us look like dorks, Stephanie adds. Michelle immediately stops laughing and says, the nerve. Roxy turns to Jesse. What can I say about Jesse? He has great hair. He also has enough oil on his head to join OPEC, which is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
She adds, you know the spill last summer? That was Jesse rinsing out his comb. Hmm. I thought that was funny. An offended Jesse starts to get out of his chair, but Becky pulls him back down. Joey is thrilled with Roxy's set. Hey, I told you guys she was funny. She's killing it up there. And then he notices the family isn't laughing. No, we're not, Becky says. Thanks for inviting us, Joey. What do you have planned for us next weekend? A beating in the parking lot? Roxy finishes her set to the applause from the rest of the audience.
And that's the end of the Smash Club scene.
They're taking themselves a little too seriously.
Yeah, I was going to say, was Roxy out of line or are the tanners too insensitive?
Well, I think, I mean, I think a lot of things about this.
But if we're going to live in the land of this was like an actual, this was a thing.
I would say that the tanners knew what they're, you're going to a stand-up show.
It's usually implicit that someone in the audience knows is gonna, you know, gonna get roasted. Right. It wasn't like crowd work necessarily, but it was, she also was there, you know, there were, cause she had a.
Couple of good points. I, she, she did. She had a couple of funny moments.
Yeah.
Um, Well, and I'm biased because I'm Kimmy Gibbler, who's been the subject of their insults on them for years. So I'm kind of like, you guys, you know, you know, the family roasted Kimmy on a daily basis.
But they can't take it. And now all of a sudden you're like, you know, like, nice TV show.
Yeah, they get all butthurt.
The only TV show in San Francisco. Get over it. You're fine.
They're fine.
But also the jokes weren't that mean.
Like, you can't. Well, they weren't funny. The Tanner family is so beloved that they can't, that Roxy can't roast them. No, because otherwise they'd.
Come for her. The writers can't write it too mean.
Right. Because ABC would have a problem with that.
All of San Francisco would come for them.
As a result, the jokes are just kind of mid. And so I'm like, they weren't even that bad or funny or insulting. And the Tanners had just such a gross overreaction to being so offended by this.
I mean, if the Tanners do one thing well, it is gross overreaction.
Gross overreacting.
Yeah, they're experts at it. So next, in the kitchen, Jesse and Becky are playing Play-Doh with the twins. One of the boys asks, where's Doughy? Becky responds that Uncle Joey has a new friend who he's been spending time with. The boys start chanting, we want Doughy, we want Doughy. Jesse understands that they like making Play-Doh animals with Joey because he makes all the funny noises. But hey, their old man can do it too. He asks for a request and one of the twins says, hippopotamus. Jesse tries to sound like a hippopotamus and he fails. The boys continue chanting, we want Joey, we want Joey, until he walks in and they cheer. Becky is grateful. Joey came in, but he doesn't have time to play with the boys
right now. Joey is clearly upset and says, I see you got your sense of humor back. Jesse answers, come on, Joey. Roxy ambushed us up there on stage. And Danny concurs, well, not as much ambushed as bushwhacked. Joey reminds them that when a comic makes a joke about them, it's the highest compliment. I don't know if I agree with that, but.
Well, it could be if the jokes were funny.
If the jokes were funny.
You know what I mean? If they're not funny, you're like, leave me out of this, please.
True.
True. But, yeah. Becky tells him that they were really embarrassed. Joey translates that to mean they don't like her and lets them know that if they don't want to be around her, They won't be around him either. Jesse stops him and admits they were maybe a little bit sensitive. Joey agrees that maybe she shouldn't have made fun of the girls. Okay. Jesse, of course, was talking about his hair.
Becky tells Joey that if Roxy is important to him, then Roxy is important to them too. Danny suggests they invite her to dinner. Joey is happy. He does a Ren and Stimpy impression and gives Danny a big sloppy kiss.
I love how quickly the tanners create a problem and get over it.
That was record-breaking, like in 30 seconds.
Joey's upset. Wait here. Why don't you let her to dinner?
Yeah. Okay. Yeah, it usually takes 22 minutes to resolve that misunderstanding. This was very quick. Next in the girls' room, DJ walks in and finds Michelle watching cartoons on their small little TV.
Small TV.
Yeah.
The thing's like a metal canister. It's like a portable TV. Back in the day, a portable TV when all you had was antenna.
Yeah. A cable. Yeah.
You'd be in a park somewhere and get like some fuzzy sort of, you know.
Right.
And you're like, look, we can watch TV anywhere.
It was cool back in 1994. DJ remarks, everything looks so small. I thought it was a commercial for an ant farm. She tries to convince Michelle to choose the big screen TV, pointing out how much better Tiny Toons would look on it. Stephanie walks in and realizes what DJ is doing. You're trying to talk Michelle into the big screen TV. DJ argues that Stephanie has been working on Michelle day and night. Yeah, right. Like I'm sitting there at three in the morning whispering in her ear, karaoke machine, karaoke machine. That was you, Michelle realizes. DJ and Steph start going back and forth over her. Big screen, karaoke, big screen, karaoke. Overwhelmed, Michelle covers her ears and screams, Dad,
please help. Danny runs in at a moment's notice and asks what's wrong.
Always right there.
Always. Make the voices stop, Michelle yells. Danny tells DJ and Stephanie to back away and decides he's taking Michelle to Big Sid's so she can make the decision by herself.
This is so royally unfair.
And DJ and Stephanie find this completely unfair.
This is bullshit. I'm going to say it. Bleak me out.
It is.
What? First, the pink bunny. Now, the parrot.
Now the big Sid catalog.
Yes.
Oh, it's, yeah, the favoritism is definitely showing itself this episode. Danny says, without sisterhood, and Ebert screaming in your ear. And then he rushes Michelle out of the room and into the car. DJ and Steph run to the window and continue shouting after her. Big screen. Karaoke. Big screen.
Karaoke. I do see, though, why... the baby always gets away with stuff. You know what I mean?
They just, yeah.
Yeah.
I'm the youngest, so yeah.
I would agree with that.
You would be the one getting taken down to Big Sid's and be like, nah, nah.
Yeah.
Yep.
It's not fair, but it's kind of true. Next in the living room, Michelle and Danny return from Big Sid's and DJ and Steph immediately ask whether she picked big screen TV or or the karaoke machine. Nope, Michelle says. And Danny walks in carrying a cardboard cutout of Big Sid and explains that Michelle finally found something that she liked.
That's it? Stephanie asks in disbelief. Pretty cool, huh? Michelle says. And DJ wants to know exactly what she was thinking. Yep, this was Like she didn't even pick something good. Like, come on, you got you.
Sid was thrilled. He was like, you just want that? Oh, great. Yeah. Take three.
That cost me nothing.
Please.
I've been trying to get rid of this for weeks. Michelle explains that she picked something they could all enjoy. Danny reminds the girls that it was Michelle's decision, though he personally lobbied for the washer and dryer. Which I thought would have been the smarter choice. I would love a new washer and dryer.
Get the washer and dryer.
Ask him to toss in the cardboard cutout, you know? Yeah.
Michelle says the cutout will help them always remember little Sid and adds, big Sid's kind of cute too. Jesse and Becky walk in and are surprised to see big Sid. He lives here now, Michelle explains. Jesse suggests putting him in the window to scare the heck out of the Amway lady. And there's a knock at the door. Danny tells everyone it must be Joey and Roxy. He reminds the family to be nice and give Roxy a second chance because Joey really cares about her. When Michelle asks how they can show Roxy they like her, Danny suggests laughing at all of her jokes. What if they're not funny?
Stephanie asks. Laugh anyway, he says. Jesse agrees. If we want to keep Joey, we're going to have to laugh like we've never laughed before. And Michelle practices an exaggerated fake laugh.
Such a straight is great. It was a list. Never learned like that before.
Yeah. Outside, Roxy tells Joey she's nervous about going back in because his family doesn't like her. Joey assures her that they just don't know her yet and encourages her to give them another chance. Roxy says she doesn't want to bomb with his family again. Joey tells her not to worry about being funny. Just be open and honest.
Everything will work out just fine. When Roxy asks if he's sure, Joey jokes. Then again, I was sure that the chicken McLiver was going to take off. At the dinner table, Jesse puts down some fried chicken as Joey and Roxy join in. If we had a season nine, that would have been his business. Well, I guess he's famous fried chicken. Well, was it cold or was it hot?
Because the cold fried chicken is his thing. But this was his hot fried chicken.
Maybe this is how it starts is hot fried chicken. And then it gets put in the fridge for cold fried chicken. It gets cold for his midnight snack.
Yeah, I think that's it. Becky tells Roxy she hopes she likes chicken. And Roxy says, I'm a big chicken person. The entire family immediately bursts into forced laughter. Big chicken person. You're quick, young lady. You really are, Jesse says.
It's like they've never met humans before. It's their first day on Earth.
I'm like, this is where they got the idea for Third Rock from the Sun.
When they were like, wait, what if it's aliens.
But they look like people, but they just don't quite get it.
That's what this is. The tanners are insane.
It's like one extreme or the other. There's no middle ground.
I love them so much.
The tanners are tannering all over this dinner party. Roxy tells them she's glad they're still speaking to her after what happened at the smash club. She admits that she sometimes forgets that a joke can hurt as much as slamming your finger in a car door. Everyone erupts into fake laughter again. That is funny, funny stuff, Danny says.
They're like robots. What is that? It's like the studio audience is like, laugh. Whether it's funny or not, you have to laugh.
Oh, God. Oh, how did Tanner manage to get through the world?
Joey explains that Roxy is trying to say she would never intentionally hurt anyone because she knows how it feels. Roxy opens up about being teased as a child because of her voice. Other kids used to call me Squeaky. And the family laughs even louder.
That's been so insane.
DJ says, ah, Squeaky. I have to remember that one.
Oh, my God. How do they have any friends? They don't. That's right. It's only these people. Oh, my God.
Joey finally asks, what is wrong with you guys? Thank you, Joey.
Thank you, Joey. Joey, the voice of reason? You know it's bad.
You know it's bad when Joey's like, you guys are weird.
What's with the voices and the enthusiasm?
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Michelle explains. Nothing. We're just laughing at Squeaky's jokes.
Damn, that's cold. Oh, yeah.
Joey clarifies that Roxy isn't telling jokes.
She's trying to be.
Open and honest with them. DJ apologizes and explains that they thought Roxy was trying to be funny and they were only laughing to show that they liked her.
It's our first day on Earth. Pardon us. We don't know how these things work yet.
Danny points out that Joey made.
We eat our fried chicken cold.
Yeah. Danny points out that Joey makes it seem like laughing at Roxy's jokes was the only way to show her that they liked her.
Nuance. It's not their specialty.
There's none. Roxy's confused because Joey told her not to tell any jokes.
Oh, my God.
Joey admits that when he told Roxy not to be funny and just to be herself, he secretly hoped that taking the pressure off would make her be funny. Everyone has a different agenda here.
This is the layers and subtext of funny and not funny and do it and don't.
And laugh, but at nothing. This, I mean, it's wild.
I love the tanners. Stephanie asks Joey why being funny is such a big deal to him. And Joey explains that he moved around a lot as a kid and making people laugh became his way of getting them to like him. Finally, that's the point. That now, it took till now. I was like, now this is the point.
We could have gotten to this the first dinner.
I'm like, why did the writers write this? I was asking myself this.
Because you got to feel 22 minutes. And it's season seven, episode 17. And you're like, what if we gave Joey a girlfriend for a week, but.
The family doesn't like her. But then they kind of like her, but then they don't like her again. And we get rid of her. Yeah.
It's all to point out that.
They're like, oh yeah, he likes her.
But they're like, Roxy thought the family was so insane that she was like, I'm never going out with you again. It's a no wonder Joey never gets a permanent girlfriend or a wife. The family drives them away. Bring them home to meet these crazy people.
Every single time. But yes, now we understand. This is why it's so important that Joey... Okay, got it. That people laugh at Joey and or Roxy. Becky assures Joey that even if he never did his bullwinkle impression... or gargled his Kool-Aid, or said another funny thing again, they would still love him. Danny agrees. Joey thanks everybody.
See?
Yes, Joey. Roxy says, well, I haven't said a funny thing all night. You guys must be crazy about me. And this time, everyone genuinely laughs. Joey suggests they start over and reintroduces Roxy to the family. Danny shakes her hand. Roxy, nice to meet you. Joey's told us absolutely nothing about you.
Everyone laughs and continues dinner. And that is our show. That was a thing that we watched.
That was a 22 minute sitcom about being funny under pressure in front of people.
And a bird.
And a bird.
Did you have any everywhere you looked? No, I had none, but I have thoughts. I have only thoughts. Oh, what's yours?
Do you not remember?
What? No. Tell me.
Do you know who Little Sid is?
Oh, no.
Who was it?
No.
That was Bruce. That was Nielsen. The lighting guy. Yes.
Bruce Nielsen. I'm like, he looks familiar. Bruce Nielsen. Yes.
That's who it was.
Okay.
Yes.
I was trying to picture. I was like, who is that?
Little Sid.
They dressed him up in a ridiculous costume.
Oh, my gosh.
Outfit and took his picture.
He looked the part.
And the funny part was they called him Big Sid, but Bruce was not a very tall man.
Oh, no. That was the Big Sid joke.
Right.
Yeah.
That was great.
Oh, man.
That's a good one. That's a very good one.
Yeah, that was a very good one, yeah.
No, it's a big one. I didn't have any.
I looked in the audience. I didn't see any other.
I didn't see.
Anybody in that Smash Club scenes. No, no. But yeah, this this episode just didn't like it. It just didn't. It didn't hit like that. I want to know what the network notes were, because I feel like maybe they had a good episode and then there were just too many network or studio notes. And then this is what you end up with, which is a bunch of stuff that doesn't really make sense.
You know, I appreciate you giving them the benefit of the doubt.
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. And it is.
And I will say that does happen sometimes where you're like, wait. this is what we got out of that, and you guys like it better?
Yeah.
It's weird.
The episode needed us to believe that Roxy crossed a line, but the material didn't really.
Support the reaction.
Because you can't cross a line with the tanners, because then people would hate Roxy, and they don't want to hate Roxy.
Basically... You're stuck between a rock and a tanner.
A roxy and a tanner?
A roxy and a tanner place, basically, is you can't hate either character.
Yeah.
So you can't really insult either one.
Right.
But you can't really make them that funny either.
Right. So it just sort of all falls a little limp. And then the family's outrage feels bigger than.
The jokes really warranted. And it's like, you guys need to settle down.
Yeah. Yeah, everything was just over-exaggerated.
I mean, I know when I come to Full House, I expect realism. And this was not doing it for me. I felt so taken out of, you know, the world.
Yeah, and I'm so happy when Joey finally gets an episode and he finally gets a girlfriend. And then this is what we end up with. Yeah, I think.
The Tayors need to do like a group weekend thing. retreat of some sort on uh communication skills they do.
And maybe a little and maybe.
Also uh like a six-hour workshop on codependence you know what i mean i think that if we could address that with the tanners or nuance right like hey sometimes people don't mean it when they say this it's it's a you know but.
Right right they're little alien people They're alien. Little alien people.
That would make a lot more sense if they were aliens from outer space. That would make the whole premise of the show a lot more understandable. Yeah, it wasn't my favorite episode. I don't know if this is my least favorite of season seven.
It was ironically trying too hard, which is sort of the whole point.
Yeah, you can't.
I know.
I wanted to like this more than I did. I know. Had a lot of potential.
Just glad Joey got, you know, at least one person interested in him.
He got one person interested. And we had a macaw. Like, you know, thank goodness we had.
A macaw in the first two scenes. If the script sucks, throw in a bird. You know, throw a bird on it.
Maybe that's why they added the macaw. I was going, we need something. This is terrible.
Distract him with a bird. Right. I get it.
It was very full house in that sense. Yeah, the bird wasn't a great payoff. Anyway. I know, it wasn't a great payoff either.
You guys know, this isn't our favorite episode. It's not our favorite. It's a thing.
It's going in the bottom three.
Yeah, it's going in the bottom three.
Going in the bottom three.
All right, everybody.
Well, we appreciate you listening. We appreciate you following along and not getting as easily offended as the Tanners do.
Tell us what you thought about this episode.
Did you love it?
Did you hate it?
Tell us what you thought about this episode.
Were the Tanners overreacting? Was Roxy mean? Was she too mean?
Yeah, I'd love to know.
Did you like Roxy?
I'd love to know what the Fannaritos think.
Anyway, and if you want to let us know what you think, you can find us on Instagram at HowRudePodcast or you can send us an email at HowRudeFannaritos at gmail.com. You can like and subscribe to the podcast wherever you're listening to it so you get all the new episodes right when they come out.
And that is all, everyone. So we will see you next time. And remember, the world is small.
But the house is full.
Of macaws.
Macaws. Big ones.
Just gigantic.
Huge, colorful macaws.
Huge, illegal birds.
The Tanners have been running an illegal black market animal shop out of their house.
Yeah.
And that's how they get all this money.
And Dave does all the voices for them.
Yeah, Dave does all the voices for them.
Yeah, it's just full of birds, which you're going to want a lot of plastic for that.
Get a lot of newspaper on the floor.
A lot of newspaper.
All right, y'all.
We'll see you next time. Goodbye.
Bye.
