Hello Boys and Girls heißt die.

So Nico, thank you very much for taking the time. I'm really excited to talk to you today. You too. And I guess you're excited as well, because your new book will be out in a month. Hello Boys and Girls. I'm really looking forward to it.

Wow. I had to give the money back on the advance. There was a company out in New York that published it, wanted to publish it. So then I didn't do anything with the book.

And then when I'd left and retired from Maiden, from touring, Rod, my manager, suggested I have enough time now to delve in and actually finish off this book. So it really is down to my manager, Rod, for inspiring me to pick up the pen, so to speak, and get right in again. I did have a friend of mine called Ben Durz help me finish it off. So hats off to him, too.

And so, you know, he was right. Rod was right. I mean, I'm not touring with the boys anymore. So I had enough time to delve into getting this book finished.

Um but uh every time I would do interviews or go on a bit of camera doing stuff to camera I go hello boys and girls and I thought that's very me um you know um, Ja, ich war es, dass es, dass du es nicht mehr wissen, dass du, was ich immer gesagt habe, oder nicht zu schabbt.

You Just Never Know, Do You? Und dann, du hast du, we like das. So we swapped it out and I'm happy with either one of those.

So we call it Hello Boys and Girls. So there we are. That's it. While writing the book and you were looking back at over 50 years as a musician, you've been in bands before Iron Maiden, you've been with Trust, amazing band, I love them. Was there a period in your life that you suddenly saw different und nachdem du es nachdem, als du es war, war es durch es.

Um, not so much. You know, I mean, everything I've been involved with in my professional career musically has been pretty, pretty special. You know, there's lovely stories about session work I did with various people and various albums. Some didn't make the book stories But looking back I was not really thinking Any differently From what I was feeling At the particular time With whomever it was I was involved with You know.

In terms of endearment For everything from Streetwalkers To Pat Travers To McKitty, To Trust That was a couple of years Of fantastic, They were such a great band und sie sind so talented, als war McKitty. Und er hat Charlie Tumahai, der used to be a Bebop Deluxe, his bass player.

So ich habe ein viel gelernt von all die anderen Spieler, that I've worked with over these years and John Plotel was the bass player with Streetwalkers, so looking back when I was writing these stories, you know, there wasn't anything that I thought, oh, you know no, I'm not going to write about that or this was a bad period so I basically approached everything, as honestly as I could and, you know, the feelings that I had about the earlier days Es ist nicht alles, in meinem Herz, ich kann nicht sagen, dass es eine Unterschiede zwischen dem,

You already mentioned your catchphrases, you're known as the funny guy in the band, you're known for being a great storyteller with a sense of humor, but in a band like Iron Maiden, which is a very well-documented band with a very well-documented history, like I think Burning Ambition, the movie just came out this year, last year? Yeah, it came out in May, yeah.

So, how did you decide, well, this story has to be in the book, or maybe this story has been told so often that I don't have to put it in the book? I didn't have that in the back of my mind when I was writing the book. You know, I wrote it as my story. There were some stories that I was asked to not put in the book, some stories that I was asked not to put in the book, which I said I'm going to put in the book.

Aber there were a lot of stories when you write an autobiography. The publishing company turned around and go there's too many words we've got to edit, this that and the other, this has got to go or whatever, so I had that in the back of my mind and I thought well there's certain stories I'd like to make sure were going to be covered, like the Aussie stories and early life with streetwalkers and you know.

Going through my professional career. But there was a lot that wasn't actually made, you know, that was edited out of the book, you know. But that's okay. What is left behind is still the story of my life. It's just that it might not be chronologically precise. You know, like one story that I had in would have led on to another story gets nixed, you know.

So it's just the way that publishing houses work. Und, you know, you can only write so many words or else you've got, like, a war and peace novel, you know. So, yeah, and so I just went and wrote it as it was. It got edited. There was a lot of mumbo-jumbo going on in it and a lot of flotsam and jets and that to get taken out.

But I'm generally very satisfied with it. I did the audio version a couple of weeks back, about three weeks ago, finished that. So I told that story my story in my voice so that's cool So you also read the audiobook yourself? Yes Oh that's very cool Yeah it's going to be cool. Was there ever a moment you know I imagine you sitting at home writing your book and you have a story where you're like I'm not quite sure if this happened the way I remember Did you ever, ring up Steve or Bruce Did it really happen that way?

No, I did not phone anybody up. In fact, there was a discrepancy that my manager actually got wrong. He insisted that when I did my first gig in England with Maiden, I had a suit on.

Und ich habe einen Bauen, It was my first trip to LA We're Maiden.

Well I say the first trip We've been there before But this was when I found Sue So Rod was wrong there, And you know I obviously ran a lot of the story by Rod To get the historical Make sure that you know This was right Do I remember that that venue there, Was an arena And not a club You know that sort of thing So.

Some of the stories Rod wanted to censor, And I eventually had to say to him, mate, look, you know, this is my story. This is my memory of these stories. Now, maybe I've got it wrong. But if that's the case, I will be put right later on. But at the minute, I'm not going to take this particular story out because you don't like it, you know.

So, you know, that's the only collaboration with one of the band, if you like, associated with the band that we had. I didn't speak to any of the guys and go, well, did this really happen? I've got a pretty good memory for stuff. You know how it is though, Danny, that when you have something that's happened 20 years ago and we're talking about it together, that's something that you and I happened, you might go, well, I don't remember it like that.

Don't you remember so-and-so and so-and-so and you go, oh yeah, I can get that.

Und wir hatten eine Party in meinem Zimmern, und Ozzy turned auf und ich dachte, da ist no way erinnert sich, und er kam, und er hat uppers in einen Pocket, down as in the oven you want to go up or you want to go down and he's dropping all these tablets over the floor, anyway when I saw him back in 2004 or 2005 we were doing this, it was a charity called Walter Aid I drew me with a drum kit and stuff and the caricature of myself he did something else on a shirt and it was the launch of this particular.

T-shirt Artworked by a bunch of different Aussie und ich sind zusammen Und ich dachte, ich will never remember this Und ich sat mit ihm und ich sagte, ja, do you remember Die Party we had in Ich denke wir in Finnland somewhere, Und du kamst Und du warst mich, ja, du warst mich Ich hatte ein big trenchcoat Und ich hatte einen Huppen in den einen Puckett Und ich sagte, du, remember?

Und er sagte, ja, du warst mich Wir hatten eine gute Party Und dann sagte, du remember mich saving your life, And I went, you what? And this is no word of a lie. And he told me we were coming back on the ferry from Calais back to England. And it was a stormy night. And he said, we were really out of it. And I met you. I saw you on the back of the boat.

And they had the railing. And you were about to fall over. And I grabbed you. I don't remember that. I do remember being on a boat coming back from Calais. But. You know, it was one of those blind drunk moments. And I said to him, well, thanks for that. So Aussie saved my life, you know. And I believe him because he remembered, which I didn't think he would, the night of the party that we had in my room with Streetwalkers.

I see that. That's a great story. I haven't heard that before, actually. Yeah. Yeah. It's in the book. You haven't read it, have you? Yeah, I really look forward for the book, exactly for stories like that. Do you think there will be stories, or is there any particular story in the book where you're curious about what the other band members will say about the story?

Not really, no. I mean... I don't know how Steve will feel about my side of the story about Blaze, the Blaze years that we had. I have very, very fond memories with Blaze. We were like, you know, I was like his Salagate Granddad when he was, I mean, I've been the oldest guy in the band. And he and I used to hang around a lot together and go to dinner and whatnot.

Die Songs, wie Hallowed und Songs, und Rothschild und Things, that we were doing with him. Evil That Men Do and stuff like that they were, songs that needed to be down a level so I got to in one hand I'm sort of very sad about the way he performed some of those songs and my feeling of, I want to leave the band I don't want to be doing this it's not fair to the fans so on and so forth and, I think maybe Steve vielleicht sieht es ein bisschen anders und nicht glücklich sein.

Was können die Leute von einem Abend mit Nico erwarten, so that they won't simply get from just reading the book? Well, they get to see this in person, you know, the good-looking bloke from the band. I mean, that's got to be worth summing, isn't it, just to come up and say, oh, no.

You're going to get the stories as. You know, we're going to, I don't know, we've not really worked out a program as such. I do know this, the second half is going to be two halves, two 45-minute sets. The second set, I'm going to take a leaf out of Bruce's book What he did on his speaking tour Which is going to get little, index cards and pens on the chairs And people are going to write a question, Whether it's related to the book or not, it doesn't matter They're going to ask me a question, write it down on a piece of paper Put their names down, stick it in a hat, Second half, I'm going to be pulling You know, this is my intention Is to pull a question out the hat If I don't like it, I'll throw it away, whatever.

No, you know, and open the floor up to questions and answers. But the first half we're thinking it'll probably be, I'm going to have a host with me. So there'll be two of us on stage probably. We may change that, but that's how we're thinking of it at the minute. And then.

Under the Table, reading stories from the book yeah, you spend most of your life on stage with a huge drum kit right in front of you which is like a barrier between you and the audience maybe and, I don't think that you are but are you a little bit nervous so to not have a drum kit between you and the audience so to be like in the front, no mate I'm actually less nervous about it because I'm not having to play a drum kit, you know.

No, I mean, my drums are my domain. That's where I've lived for 50 years professionally, and actually more than that. But, you know, when I get behind my drum set, I know I'm in control. Out front, in front of people without a drum kit, I'm not in control, but, I'm used to public speaking and being, you know, being that, comedian for the band und ein bisschen von der Reisens ich nicht von Interviews war weil ich würde in der Rabbit Hole und ich würde nicht kommen auf für einen anderen 10 Minuten und dann die Frage würde ich mir beantwortet. Was war die Frage?

Das war die Frage. Das war die Frage. Aber. I'm happy to be able to be involved with a speaking tour like this because it gives me a chance to meet probably, I'm hoping there'll be a mixture in the audience, not just of Iron Maiden fans. Not just Nico fans. I would like to see families of people or, you know, mums and dads have gone out and bought the book and go, oh, this bloke's quite interesting.

Oh, he's doing a speaking tour. We're going to have a word, you know, going to see what it's all about.

So to say, how does an ordinary week in the life of Nico McBride actually look like when your life isn't built around touring with Iron Maiden anymore? Well, I get up in the morning. When I wake up, it's not easy, about 7.30, 8 o'clock, I'll get up, feed the cat, feed my sniffly puppies.

Sit down, answer me e-mails or have a look on me e-mails and then I go and sit. And watch a lot of Netflix or Prime Video. I like a lot of these series that have come out. And I watch a bit of telly and then I don't play golf anymore because I've got a bit of a bad back. So if I do go out, I play nine holes and that's about it for me nowadays.

Und dann ich muss nach dem Restaurant gehen, sehen was was going on down there und, you know, kick mein Head in the door und I eat too many Ribs at the minute so I've got a bit of a pouch going on so, you know, that's a typical day for me, a typical week, you know, I'm just relaxing more and I've learnt, from taking a step back from the band, I'm enjoying being at home but I also miss the band und mein Bruder ist so bad.

So I keep, obviously with the book coming out, I'm in touch with, still in touch with Roller Lott and Dave Schatz at our office and Delphine Nizette. She's amazing. I've got a great crew behind me that's still the maiden family, if you like, the Phantom Music people. And they've worked so strongly with HarperCollins, who published my book for me.

I'm not sure of the date. It's next month sometime. Yeah. It's funny that you mentioned your restaurant because I told yesterday a friend of mine that I will have the interview with you and he's a huge Iron Maiden fan as well.

And he said, tell him I was at his restaurant and tell him I had the best coleslaw in my whole life there. Oh, brilliant. Oh, fantastic. You know what? Yeah, so many people love our food and I love supplying it. The opportunity of that I mean we don't make money there I'm an employment exchange and I'm happy with that, And I'm happy that I have something Other than the other Peripheral stuff To keep me occupied And I've got my dear friend and partner Mitch Tan and his wife Ivy They kind of run it for me, They do the day to day graft And keep the accounts, I'm just a face Although I'm handsome.

You're just not touring anymore with them and you recently said that you'd be delighted to play on another Our Maiden album, provided the material wasn't too, well, you could play it physically, let's say that way.

Have you spoken to Steve about it, like, hey, let's write some songs that I can play or is that something for the future? Because they're on tour. No. It's a moot point right now. There's no, I spoke to Steve last week. I didn't broach the fact that he had doing that. And when I saw him in the restaurant, he came to my restaurant in March, February, March, earlier this year.

And we sat and had a good chat. And I said to him, you know, are you going to, you know, you've got like some time off next year. Are you going to think about doing a new record? And he went, no, I haven't thought about it, Nick. So having said that doesn't mean to say there may not be an album It's just that he's not prepared yet as then to think about doing a record I know Bruce would like to do one, But you've got to bear in mind, Danny If they make an album, right, you've got to go out and tour it, So, there's another couple of years down the line to, first of all, you've got to get the album made, get it made and put in this, you know, distributed and all that, and then that's more time,

more time, then you've got to go tour it. Not to say the fact that they don't want to go out and tour, but, you know, we're all getting long in the tooth now. And, you know, these are high-energy shows. I'm not saying that they're going to retire, but here's the thing, you know, if you do another record, you're going to have to go out and tour it.

Would it be, from a musician's point of view, would you, like finding a different way to play, actually, would it be like an interesting creative challenge for you or more like a limitation?

No, it's a challenge because I had to do that for two years. You know, from when I had the stroke in 23, I went off and did two tours with the band, you know, and I had to compromise some of the songs, like for the classic would be the intro to Trooper. I couldn't play that feel. My hand just wouldn't allow me to do the speed of that drum feel.

So I had to compromise. I did more triplets. So, you know. Just taking a feel from in the song, in the verse song, I actually put that feel at the intro.

Talking über die Sachen zu spielen, wenn du jetzt an alten Maiden hörst, Can you listen to it as music or is there like the drummer in you that says, well, I should have played the drum fill differently?

No, I've never really looked at our records. I look at it as a whole. I mean, once I've done my performance, that's it. I don't go back and think, oh, I wish I'd have played that particular part in this particular fill or on an offbeat, you know, like a different drum part. I was really happy to read that interview with you because you recently picked

A Matter of Life and Death as your, favorite Iron Maiden album which for me is one of the most underrated albums in the whole discography, I have some sort of nostalgia for it because it was the first Iron Maiden record that came out when I got into Iron Maiden and it was the first record I bought for myself so I was listening to it like every day for months and, what I wanted to know is like, Warum macht dieses Album dein Lieblings-Version aus Our Maiden?

Es war einfach etwas über die Stimme in der room, Kevin Shirley, he's important and then of course we took that record and when we finished it, and we thought what don't we play live, it was like every track is a monster track, and that was what initiated the decision was not to leave anything off that album because they're all great songs so we'd do the whole thing und es ist die erste und einzige Zeit wir haben einen Album gespielt in der ganzen Welt.

You know, it's just the culmination of how I felt when I was in the studio making that record with the guys and the fact that we took it from the studio and we went to and performed the whole thing live.

It was just immense. And that's why I chose that album as my favorite all-time maiden album. But then I go back to Book of Souls and I look at Book of Souls and I think, you know, the songs on there, you know, the title track is just immense. You know, Red and the Black, oh, you know, Tears of a Clown.

Oh, you can't bet. And of course you've got Empire of the Clowns. You know, so in terms of asking, I have to say Matter of Life and Death just because it spoke to me in a different way because of the way we recorded it, the time that we had in the studio. We've always enjoyed ourselves in the studio, by the way, but that was something, magical about that album, you know.

Oh blimey, just take your pick mate. I would have to say Hallowed Be Thy Name live versions Any of my live versions of Hallowed It's my favourite song that Steve has ever written Next to When the Wild Wind Blows That's another one of my favourite songs, I say favourite These are just by preference This one I prefer more than the other They're all great songs, Everything that Steve Harris writes Is just immense Hell on Earth, what a song that is The Parchment, that's my favourite song Of Asenjutsu, But Hell I Be Thy Name Life That song possesses me And I always play it quite quick It's nowhere near the tempo That they recorded it at Off of a piece of Number of the Beast But.

Live is just a magic about that song. The whole solo section is layered, you know, there's three solo sections of guitars that just, I just go and it possesses me. Anyway, that's my favorite live version of Halo. All right. So I will play that song probably in the Dortmund version of 2003, I guess. Very, very important live album for me as well. Oh, yeah. So, we're done with the interview. Thank you very much.

I think we've got some minutes left. I just want to take the chance. And thank you for all the music, because you've probably heard that a lot, but Our Maiden really influenced me a lot.

Wonderful, Mr. Steve Harris You can't go wrong listening to him And you know, that's wonderful And it's endearing Because that's inspired you to become a musician, And live a dream As well You're doing your radio stuff as well But.

You've got the thrill Of getting out there and playing in front of people It's magic Isn't it mate? It's the best thing Absolutely. Also we're looking for a new drummer so if you're free hey mate, you know you pay my FRO, I'll be there alright yeah, thank you very much for your time, it was amazing I will never forget this day in my life.
