Was kommt nach Black Sabbath?

Hallo Tony, Julian hier. Star FM in Germany. Hallo Julian.
So, von dem ich read und von dem ich gehört, Leute sehen, dass die neue Album wirklich a couple of days now and here in Germany for example right now it's on spot number 3 on the midweek album charts, which is quite good I guess did you have any expectations like that when you made the record?
No you don't expect anything really I just wanted to make a record and enjoy it and then put it out so you know you can never expect anything in this business because it can go one way or the other.
Und ist es frustrierend, wenn du eine Idee hast, in the middle of the week and then you have to wait like three or four days until you can put it down in the studio?
No, it's, I mean, there was no time scale on it whatsoever and I could work really when we had the time. If Mike wasn't busy, I'd get him over and we'd put something down. Mike Exeter, that is my engineer, producer. But, yeah, there was no rush to do it. I just wanted to put stuff down Wir haben uns ein paar Tage lang gearbeitet.
Over a period of a year, a couple of years. But I've done a couple of instrumentals in between that and other things.
So, I mean, if you put it all together, it wouldn't be long. But it's just that it's just because we've only worked every so often. It seems like a long time. You said before and talking about instrumentals that maybe you had at the beginning, you had like an instrumental album in mind.
Let's talk about your vocalist Jorn. People tend to compare his voice to the style of Ronnie James Dio.
Would you agree? And was that maybe even one of the reasons you chose him as your singer on this record? I just liked Jorn's voice. I mean, Jorn, I mean, that's the problem, really. Everybody's going to compare something. And it's unfair, really, because Jorn is Jorn. And he was a fan of Theo anyway.
But Jorn sings the way he does. He's got that type of voice. And that's the sort of voice I wanted for this album. I like his voice. It's powerful. Und ich wollte das sort of style of singing. Did you have any influence whatsoever on the lyrics? Did he ask you what he should write about? Because in the end it's your name on the record.
So did you have any objections or did you say write about this specific theme? No, not really, no. I mean. As far as I'm concerned, you leave that to the singer because they're the ones that's got to express what they're saying.
I like his lyrics very good what's happening today so you didn't read the lyrics before he put them down yeah he sent the lyrics over because he was in Sweden, Und er hat die Lüeck und dann senden die Idee, aber dann haben wir einen Blick.
Some of die Lüeckens. Let's talk about Begge, der Bass player.
Rush have a female drummer now, Alice Cooper has a girl in his band and it has become quite normal, I think but if you think, back in the days, in the 80s or even in the 90s you couldn't imagine having a heavy metal or hard rock band, having a female band member what are your thoughts on this? Yeah, I mean, years ago, yes, it was very difficult my wife was in a band called Drain STH and they, you know, they were all girl bands And it was difficult for them at that time, even though they did a lot of shows for eight years.
But yeah, so I think it's great now that females are getting recognized, because why not? I mean, and the thing is with Becky, I didn't know of Becky beforehand, even though she's been around a bit. Playing Merciful Fate and her own band. And then when I heard of her and then listened to what she had done, I thought, wow, you're really good.
And that's why I wanted her to be on the album. Is it true, at one point, you considered even asking Gieser to play bass on the record? Yes, it is. I did ask Gieser, as a matter of fact. And. He couldn't do it. I wanted to do the album in England. They wanted everybody to be here at my house. And Deezer couldn't get over at the time. He was in the States.
And he got other things going on. And so I went ahead and just tried to find people. At first I looked for people locally. And Carl Brazil, the drummer, he lives in Birmingham. Und dann Becker, sie lives in Birmingham so it sort of, worked out well because I wanted everybody to come to the house so we could, be together I didn't want to start doing stuff remotely So Gieser couldn't make it on your record but I heard that he is also putting out a solo record did he ask you if you play on one or two tracks and would you be interested?
No he hasn't I don't know I've been in touch with him about him doing his solo album, I said, that's great, you've actually got to put in some stuff together, but that's as far as we've gone, I mean, he'll do it when he's ready, I suppose, I'm not sure what he's. He's actually getting out a bit now and playing with other bands, which is great, it's nice to see that.
You know, just doing guest spots. But yeah, I mean, who knows? You never know what the future brings. Someone who actually ended up on your album is your old friend Brian May. Can you talk a little bit about your friendship, how it started and what you both have in common besides guitars, obviously? Oh God, our friendship goes back to the early 70s.
Und we since we first met, we became friends and then my wife came friends with his first wife my first wife came friends with his first wife, and then we just used to see each other and keep in touch and it just got more and more from there really and yeah he's one of my best friends Brian is, and Und wir bleiben in touch all die Zeit, wirklich.
Oder er will turn up at a show we've done like he came back to the beginning, he came to see us when we did the Black Sabbath Royal Ballet, performance, he came there so he does, you know, we get together as much as we can really Talking about back to the beginning, yesterday it was announced that there's going to be a live album as expected coming out just before Christmas, have you listened, to the live mix yet, have they done a good job because I imagine it's quite, difficult with these stadium shows, especially under the circumstances back
to the beginning, where there wasn't that much time to set up anything properly. Have you heard the mix, and are you satisfied? I don't know. I didn't know it was coming out on a DVD or whatever. I didn't know about that. Yeah, DVD, vinyl, CD, the whole bunch. Oh yeah, I do know now. I know. I spoke to Giese yesterday, and he didn't know either. So So, apparently it is coming out.
So you haven't heard anything about it? No, I hadn't heard anything previously, no. Okay. Nor Giza, nor Giza hadn't. But it is, I know I've seen it advertised because that's, Giza got in touch with me and said, have you seen this? I went, no. So, but anyway, it's probably good that, you know, it's coming out.
It's a nice Christmas gift for Sabbath fans, I guess. Yeah. Tony, thank you so much for taking your time. I hope you have a good day Thanks so much Julian Nice to talk to you.
