Hello and welcome to SideQuest. This is our video game show here at Geekiverse. I am your host, Dillmos, and I have with me the professor, Travis Snell. How are you doing tonight, my friend?
I am doing good, aside for this topic. You know, because you said the nickname was inspired by that, I thought, well, I'm not doing good, but now I'm doing good. But you know what? big show. I'm sure we'll tell another cast. Shout out to Patrick Stewart, man. RIP. What a great career, what a life. We'll tell you again, but that's what the, that's what I'm going with the nickname today is honoring that man. But I'm excited to, what we're going to talk about today, because it's something that is like, maybe tentatively, whoa, oh, I'm excited. You know, we've tentatively had, I feel like, talked about it or planned, maybe multiple, never planned, but just like, hey, one day, or like, oh, here, or oh, here,
borrow this disc and see if it works. But today's the day, you know? Yeah.
No, I'm excited. I know you're coming to this with a bit of a stomachache, but I don't think there's any better cure for a stomachache than talking about Star Fox Adventures.
Absolutely. Just eat a couple... It's the OG Pepto-Bismol. Yeah, the OG Pepto-Bismol. Eat a couple of those big walnuts or whatever they give you.
In the game. So much appetizing stuff in this game.
I'll recover with some Star Fox talk.
Yeah, we are here, a single topic episode today, talking all about Star Fox Adventures. Maybe it seems like a weird time. I mean, I think the idea behind this was that Star Fox is kind of getting back in the limelight. Of course, there was the re-release of Star Fox 64 that came out earlier this year. Fox appeared in the Mario movie earlier this year. There's still many rumors and rumbles of other Star Fox games that are coming, including...
Rumors that maybe a Star Fox Adventures style game, maybe not a sequel necessarily, but a game in the style of this is possibly in the works from Nintendo as well. And so I think just because of all the Star Fox, you know, all that smell in the air, me and you have been wanting to do this. And then just about a month ago, maybe, yeah, I think it was about a month ago, they put Star Fox Adventures on Nintendo Switch Online, which is not a game I thought they would. They're very picky and choosy with the N64 and GameCube games. And I just didn't think this one would make the cut. But, you know, obviously, Star Fox, again, they're trying to get it back in the limelight a little bit with all these the new game that came
out this year, even though it was a remake, remaster, whatever you want to call it. And then, you know, potentially more stuff on the horizon, maybe a movie and things like that. So. I think it's a good thing, you know, to get more Star Fox out there that people can play. And this is going to be an opposite side of the coin kind of conversation for us because I'm coming to this game having never played it and you're coming in as a big longtime fan. And also the thing I didn't realize until we booted this game up is because I knew very little about this game.
I knew the concept of it, but I never played it back in the day. I didn't realize this was made by Rare. And so I love this because earlier this year, me and you did the Donkey Kong 64 retrospective. And so I don't know, I think we should keep this going. Just like do a retro or two every year of some Rare games. Maybe Banjo could be next.
I was going to throw Banjo because after I did 64, other things come up, but all I wanted to do was play Banjo. And that was when I talked to you, like, I think I want to stop buying some new games.
Let's do it. Let's lock it in right now. Banjo will be the next Rare retrospective.
Sure, 2027. Look out for that because obviously GTA is coming up in two weeks and we'll be locked on that. But 2087, I'm down for some banjo.
That's another one that you obviously played and loved a lot as a kid. And I played it for the first time maybe four or five years ago, but I only played maybe two or three hours of it or something like that. Uh, but it's, it's so, it's so extremely rare, which all their games have that certain vibe.
And that was, I think maybe one of the first things that just inundated me when I jumped into this game for the first time. And yeah, even like the journey of this, uh, because I borrowed your GameCube disc from Star Fox Adventures back in the summer or in the spring or whatever it was. And we were maybe like, oh, now that Star Fox is in the movie, now that the game's coming out, let's maybe start doing this retrospective.
And then I put the disc in my GameCube and it just doesn't work at all. Have you put yours in your GameCube yet to see if it was my GameCube that's after or if it's the disc that's after?
I haven't because not that too long after because I was eventually getting around to it. The GameCube is a little packed away. So I was like, okay, I'm going to do it soon here because in this fall there was a time period where I might have some time. So if I play it, I'll do it then. And then lo and behold, they, they knew. And then that's where they announced it for the GameCube, which I agree with you. I did not think they were going to, I thought it would have been, I think I had said this before in side quest, it'd be a situation where we get, let's say like the new Star Fox adventures game. And then it's okay. Now you can have the old one. Cause they did the same thing with Donkey Kong. We got the new one. They're like, okay,
now you can have 64 cause you gave us that money. So I was very surprised. It makes me think maybe that Star Fox adventure game is a bit more further away. Not like, like years, but just like, it's not like maybe immediate or maybe they're going to save for the movie. But, uh, Yeah, no, so I will one day try it on the GameCube just to settle the debate, because Dylan's calendar is broken, which is.
A very big key feature in the GameCube. The battery is dead in my GameCube, which is why every time I turn it on, it asks me to set the calendar. And so, unfortunately, that means a game like Animal Crossing would just not work on my GameCube anymore, because that game is inherently tied to the memory card and things like that. But every other game works fine. It just is annoying when I turn my GameCube on. I have to...
I have to do this thing. Man, even my N64, because I was feeling nostalgic. I tried to play some Super Smash Bros. 64 the other day. Just did not work at all. Kept crashing. It's just a mess out there. So that needs to be the next game they put on Switch Online. Desperately want that. But yeah, let's get into it a little bit. I mean, before, I guess, my thoughts on it, I guess just the history of it is that this game has been a white whale game for me. I've always wanted to play this game.
I don't think I had any... friend as a kid who had this game so it never felt within reach and I could have rented it from the store I suppose but I always remember that box art is very iconic it's very bright and colorful looks great and I've always like I never really played the Star Fox games because I don't really care much for that gameplay style, the like on rails shooter. It's not really my space.
And that's why I was so interested in this one as a kid, because I loved Fox as a character from Smash Bros and Corneria and the items and the sound effects and the music. Like I was very much into that series, even though I didn't play the game at all, but just because of how much Star Fox, you know, is in the original Smash. It's always a bunch of stuff in the Smash games and Melee in particular on the GameCube added Falco at another stage. The music again was great. And I was like, always loved the vibes and, And so this seemed like the one that I always wanted to play and just never really got around to it. So glad that I finally could, but I know that you have a much deeper history with it. So yeah, what is, give me your nostalgic memories,
the childhood vibes, like if you can remember your first time playing and that kind of thing.
Yeah, it's funny, I'd have to think what the third is, but I distinctly remember my first GameCube game being Luigi's Mansion, and I feel like this was the second. I don't know what that lines up time-wise of when the GameCube, maybe can you look that up when GameCube came out on Star Fox?
I get also, I mean, mansion was a launch title, right? So that makes sense.
That makes sense.
Adventures was 2002. So that was, uh, the year after the game came out.
Okay. That makes sense to me. Then maybe it wasn't the same, but I just feel like it was in that realm or maybe just like in Nintendo games. Second, I, and maybe just as the one that I remember playing this the most along with Luigi's mansion and melee, like it was kind of three. I'd have to think of another fourth for the Mount Rushmore. Like there was Batman vengeance.
I really liked there's a Mario party, but, uh, Yeah, this is a game I loved 64. I loved him in Smash. I just loved the Star Fox character type. And I don't even think it's just because, like, oh, I was a kid that loved Star Wars. I don't think it's that. I think he invoked, like, a different type of space venture. And I didn't– you know, like, I like the newer movie now. I didn't even grow up being a big, like, Top Gun fan. Like, I'm not, like, a big, like, Fire Jet– it was just the vibe of the four guys together. They're going on missions. And I agree with you, too, that concept– Or, sorry, the cover just looking like a great movie poster. Like, I hope if they make the movie, they should make it
something like that, right? But I think for me, why, just as a kid at that age, I think I've talked about this before, when I found out you could play as Bowser in Melee, that just, like, not... Actually, it did blow my mind.
It blew my mind. I still have the distinct memory of seeing Bowser playable on screen for the first time.
Because my whole life has just been, well, this is the bad guy you beat, right? So for me, I think it was the same thing of, oh, well, this is a game where you play as Star Fox, but he's out of the ship. And it's like, oh, really? Okay. And it's not just for a little bit. It's this whole big scope. And I remember it being similar. And I know this is going to sound silly. Maybe some people won't. But it felt like a very similar experience to when I played Ocarina of Time of, I don't think that, I don't know what the size of the map and the world, but just landing down on the planet here and then getting out of Star Fox and walking around and rolling and fighting, just being like, oh, this is, other than being like doing smash up, it's like,
it's so odd to be doing this with Star Fox, but in a good way. So this was a game that I played countless times. I don't, I think I maybe only beat it once, maybe twice, but I remember specifically, and we'll talk about the levels as we go, Up until you get to about Cape Claw, I feel like I did that sequence of events, I don't know how many times still. I think there was a certain time where I would maybe just give up because, you know, I do think the first half of this game was more fun than the back half. But, no, this was definitely, as a kid, a top-tier game, one that I was always plugging in and playing. And it would get lost in a lot. There's many times I got to areas, again, this time, oh, right, I remember being lost here for
weeks where, thank God, YouTube exists. Mm-hmm. Nice.
Yeah, and so how was it kind of replaying it?
So, you know, Dylan, we made our top 10 Patreon lists a couple of years ago. And if I would have known, no, I'm joking. I wouldn't have this game. You just saw it because I said I was 64. And then you're like, you always say it.
You have 28 games in your top 10 now.
I do want to at some point make a trail. Like you have a Dylan 100. I need to make that because I do think there is like a, like I need like a tier system.
Yeah, just off the top of your dome, where do you think Star Fox Adventures would be in that list?
It's just a favorites list, right? Not best favorites.
Yeah, Travis's list of his top 100 games.
I think it would definitely be below 50, so it's not on that top 50.
Okay, okay, okay.
Yeah, because I think it's somewhere in the 80 to 60. 60 might be as high as it gets. I'm going to bold point and say... 65. I feel good with that number right around there. I'd have to really look at it.
Would that have been higher before you replayed it? Or has it gone up?
It definitely went down, but not in a way where this is an experience that I had where it was, oh man, I played this and this broke my heart. This was so bad. The game definitely is dated. It definitely has flaws. It's definitely, I think, a lesser version of this type of dungeon crawler type of game. That's why when I said I compared Orcarina, just.
It's a very Zelda, Ocarina-style game.
Yeah, and that's what I was comparing. It was just the feeling of getting on the ship and seeing that, not compared to the game. So I think that's where, for this, we've talked about this before on other types of bases and whatnot. I think this brought up, for all the reasons I listed, and also just being like, I think this is the perfect, cool, if you like Star Fox, what a dream for a 10- to 13-year-old kid to have. I think it's tons of fun. I think you're exploring different worlds. They make Fox like, like he's a little annoying at times but he's just kind of cool.
Like that's going to be a whole topic at some point I can't wait to talk about Fox's personality it's a choice.
But he's very much maybe a little more annoying but they've given him like the Han Solo type of vibe you know like the too cool for school.
He's so effing snarky.
It's crazy yes so I think that's where it only takes off that I feel the game probably is similar when I played it through it's like okay obviously lots of things I've played again and it's the same type of vibes, maybe a little bit harder in some instances with some of the ship battles, because I just, you know, don't have the same skill maybe as I used to, but, so I don't think anything went down of, okay, this is the similar mechanics, if anything, it went quicker this time, because, you know, whether it was YouTube, or just like, okay, I could remember the map a little bit better this summer, kid, I would get lost lots of times, I think it's just that, of just the, it's the kid eyes, the,
you know, the wish, the wonder fulfillment, that type of stuff, like, I think it still holds up in a very fun place in my heart, but it has got to a point that now that I beat this, I will probably play this game again in my life, but I'm going to need a nice long break. It's not a game that once I beat it, I was like, oh, I can't wait to replay this game. It's like, no, you know what? I've seen Cape Claw enough. I've seen the rock guy enough. I've seen Tricky enough. But I was happy to because I've not done a playthrough. I think the last time I played through this, and I don't think I beat it, so I think I got to...
maybe like 70% was like right when me and Emily like first moved in together. It's like over like a decade, like 12, 13 years. So it's been a long time. So I think it held up for the most part, but it's definitely a, when I played 64 again, I was like, wow, actually I just love this game and the mechanics of playing all that stuff where this, it definitely like, wow, okay. That's there's great and good stuff about this game, but how much I loved about it was way more of just the era it was in where 64 playing again, this era, I still was having the exact same fun. I was like, okay, maybe there's some things, of course, controls, and when I was younger, that world, but I still could, like, Donkey Kong 64,
I could see myself in a couple years booting that up and doing that again, because I had such a good time revisiting that, where Star Fox, I could wait another good, you know, five to eight years on that, or maybe up for the movie, but there's definitely some weird choices we'll talk about, so yeah, I still really liked it. Impacted it a little bit, but I was very happy to sunset and kind of Tons of nostalgia.
Very much like when we were talking about Rez in 64 this year with Don Con. Tons of just, like, seeing Ares and doing stuff where it's like, wow, okay, this brings back me specific memories of sitting at my dad's place on the left side of the couch looking at this TV. He had this huge TV, and in the right corner it had, like, one of those, like, squiggles where someone was broken. So it's just like, oh, man, I remember seeing all this. So, yeah, that's where I am with it on my overall thoughts for the playthrough. But, yeah, how about you? Because this is your first time playing it all the way through, so.
first time playing it and yeah weirdly it did feel it did have like pangs of nostalgia even though i haven't played this game before just because rare and the music and the vibes and the sound effects and the energy is something that i am so nostalgic for from playing a lot of those those games as a kid and so it did feel distantly familiar in in a way uh and you know i am like pretty intimately familiar with like fox as a character and stuff like that too so it's not like it was like some fully new series even though it kind of was for me uh overall i would say i really enjoyed this game in a way that kind of surprised me because you know just you never know how dated games can be but i i really enjoyed it but i have
to put like a big stinky asterisk on that because i think without so i'm playing this of course on the nintendo switch too uh with with with the ability to make save states honestly if i just didn't have the ability to make save states i I think this would have been a much, much more miserable experience. And if I didn't have a smartphone in my pocket with a guide on it constantly, I think this would have been a much, much, much worse time. And so that's where like, if I was to separate myself from the way I played it and I was like, okay, if I played this now on a GameCube and I didn't have a guide next to me or something like that, if I didn't have a guidebook as a kid, I mean, you know, playing as a kid, it's a very different
vibe and maybe I would have just been I would have probably loved it for what it is. And it's hard for me to separate these things. But I want to put that asterisk there because I had to use a guide often. Because there was a point early on in this game, early on in the starting area, when you get control of Fox, there's a section with these chest-high walls that are kind of like a little section separating a doorway. And then there's a little entrance area.
And I was crawling around. I jumped over the wall, went and looked at everything. Spent like 20 minutes. I'm like, I don't know what the hell I have to do. And it turns out that to activate a cutscene, I had to walk through specifically the entrance gates of this chest high wall that you can otherwise jump over. And that activates a cutscene that then starts the next part.
And whenever a thing like that happens in a game once, then the rest of the game when I'm getting stuck, I'm like, okay, am I stupid? Or is the game just being really fickle here? And there were a lot of times... I would say of all the times I used a guide to find out what to do, let's say I did that 20 times in this game, which is probably a fair number. There was a lot of things I didn't know what to do. I would say probably at least 15 of those. I was like, oh yeah, that was really stupid and I would not have figured that out. I don't know how I would have figured that out other than just getting lucky. And only a handful of those times was I like, oh yeah, I probably could have figured that out if I just spent
a little bit more time. And so... There's little things like that that, again, because I had the guide in my hand, it really didn't bother me that much, and I just kind of moved along and had a fine enough time with it. But those things could have been, like, really sinister for me enjoying the game otherwise. And then save states for some puzzles that.
You have to redo.
If you, like, fuck a puzzle, you've got to redo multiple steps of a puzzle that is really slow.
Oh, I know.
Insane. And then we'll talk about it later, but the final boss fight... wow, that would have made me sour on this game in a big way if I could not have made the safe states. But all that to say that I did have safe states and I did have a guide. And so I actually really, really enjoyed it. And I found that once I was like three hours in, and I was hooked, and I was in the gameplay loop, and I understood how all the mechanics worked, I was freaking hooked, and I could not really put this game down to a point where I thought I was going to maybe take a couple weeks to beat the game so we could do the episode, but then it was a few days later, I'm like, Travis, I'm ready to do this episode now. I was surprised, yeah.
Because it is like a.
I did also have a day, two days back and back where I was sick at home. And I think I played for 10 hours straight in one of those days legitimately. So that was great to have the game for that moment.
Cause it's not like, if you look at most of the guys and walk, there's not a long game per se. Like most of them are around like the eight to nine hour mark, but it's, that's if you're going from point A to point B and you're doing a walkthrough in a video, that's one thing like I enjoy it, but it's also just has like, I'll just say, I can't say terrible map design, but it's confusing. It's that, and they want you to buy the maps, but it's like, there's, Some of these maps are expensive, so it takes a while.
And I do wish that, and that's where, you know, maybe in the future, maybe we should do like a separate cast about like what we'd want for a Star Fox too. But I'll try and remember this, that I think, yeah, maybe add just even two spots to fast travel would be nice. There, there are some times where it is just a kick to the nuts when it's like, Go back to Cape Claw. And it's like, I'm so far away, dude.
It's deceptive, too. At one point, you get an ability that is called, like, the warp whatever. But, like, it only is used in certain areas. Like, you can't just, like, warp freely, which I thought is what I was unlocking when I got that ability.
So that's something where it's just, like, just the travel time alone is, it takes a lot in this game. But, yeah, the gameplay loop is definitely, because what I like about it is the usual, okay, You're doing some dungeon crawling. You're fighting some guys. You find the Kuroko spirit and you dissipate and go somewhere else. But I think they break stuff up with obviously cut scenes, but just whether you're going down the little maze or whatnot, or you do have the space battles. I think they do a good job of the pacing as far as, okay, you might be starting to get tired of this. here's something new, and then a new area, and then you're like, whoa.
That's why for me, I think the back half, like near the end, it gets a little repetitive because you're going to all the old places again. It's not.
A lot of backtracking. That's kind of confusing.
Yeah. And it's not so much like 64 where it's like, oh, I have a new characters all these new things like you might have one new ability and you can open up a few like the wall portal or whatever but like that's about it so that's where i think the first half when it's like it reminds me of like a new hope or force awakens where it's like all the movie that's all about like learning about the characters locations that to me is like the first 50 to 60 percent of this game is like just learning and seeing everything that's where it's like okay this is like this should be a movie. This is, this is the adventure I'm waiting for, you know?
So, yeah, I, I totally agree with you. I think the first few hours of this game, like, again, once you get past like that initial hump and you get like a couple abilities and you have to give it more of a move set going on. And like, I mean, I found it so confusing to know like what things were store my health and then what restores like my energy and stuff like that. So once I got like all that stuff figured out, I feel like I was, yeah, in a really good spot there. And I was really enjoying it. And it feels like kind of a smorgasbord in that you're constantly in new areas. And then you're doing a little bit of backtracking. And then you're coming back to the hub area, which is pretty small. It's
mostly just you come back here and it's a familiar place. But usually you just kind of come back there, recharge, buy some maps or whatever. And then you're off to the next new area. And I thought the backtracking was pretty well done. A couple of areas you only really go to once. And then other ones you do have to go back to a couple times. And now you have new abilities. You can go through a new area.
And I found those areas, they did a good job of making... then pretty well connected, and so you don't have to travel too far, and it is fun to redo those sections. I think for me, it was just going through that goddamn wind elevator shaft over and over again was torturous, because I could not consistently do that so many times I was falling off.
It literally feels like you would go to... You'd be on the platform, and you'd walk to it, and sometimes it would boost you up, and you'd go back to that same platform, walk by, and you would just drop.
You have to... You have to, like, you go into the wind thing that pushes you up, and then you have to go off of it, and then it gives you, like, a boost, even though you're not in the wind anymore. But then that's inconsistent because it also doesn't make any sense at all. So, yeah, that definitely screwed me up a few times. And, yeah, like, when you just, I feel like at the end of the game, you're back there every, like, hour. So it's, like, it gets a little bit aggravating. But, I mean, I think in the way that all these, like, N64 GameCube-era games This is not, this is a collect-a-thon puzzle platformer, but it's got a lot of that energy. It's a rare game, of course.
I feel like, you know, you're constantly being spit into new fun areas that have fun names to them. And, you know, it's a lot of like the basic biomes that you've seen before in all these games. But I think for me, like, it was just really fun to have that for Star Fox. I mean, one, he's usually in space, right? And that's like a big difference there.
But yeah, I mean, this guy that for me is like a Smash Bros character. I'm more used to him in like the two dimensions of, It was really fun to have him in the three dimensions and maybe exploring a lot of these places a lot more. And yeah, I really like the energy of this game. I guess this is an interesting backstory that I did not even know until a couple of years ago is that this game technically started as an N64 game called Dinosaur Planet.
And it was not a Star Fox game at all. It was just a game called Dinosaur Planet. And that game kind of got, like, canceled or delayed or whatever it was. And then they kind of revisited it back on the GameCube. And that's when they, I guess they needed a little extra zhuzh to make the game a little more spicy. And they're like, okay, I guess we'll make this a Star Fox game. And then they inserted all that stuff in it and obviously it becomes what it is. But because of that, it makes it, like, have a very distinct vibe where this, and you've played more Star Fox games than me, but I'm sure that this game feels wildly different than those. Oh, yeah, it's the all-in-all in all of them, yeah.
Yeah.
And I think that's one great for the series and great for when your series is jumping into a new genre. I think that's the time to do something like that. And so I really like the vibe of this. Again, it's very rare. The music is incredible in this game, Travis. And I went into, I booted up Smash Bros. after this because I was like, I feel like I've never heard any of these songs. And Smash Bros. is a series that's known for being so great about bringing in all the different eras of music and maps and things like that. And I think the only things of Star Fox Adventures that exist in Smash is Crystal, I believe, is an assist trophy. So she'll be in there punching people.
In Smash Ultimate, I believe there is a tricky sticker you can get. Or what do they call it? Not stickers. They have the spirit. I think there's a tricky spirit in the game. And that is literally it. There's not a map for this game, obviously. Not a single song. And I think you can maybe unlock. more music than I have but I don't think there's a single Star Fox Adventure song which is a bummer because the music is really great and I wanted to jump in and jam to it and I was like so hyped on the game and then I went into Smash and I was so disappointed now that I'm like oh now that I love this game let me go see what's in Smash from the stuff and the answer is nothing and like none of the moveset of like the staff or
anything like that is obviously like given into the characters here So, yeah, that's something I'm kind of bummed about. Like, at the very least, the music. Come on, put that in Smash, guys. That's an easy thing to do. The stage, I get it. You know, it's an old game at this point, whatever. But the music, come on. Let's get that going on.
Well, that's why, for me, until, like, a couple... I can't remember when I learned it. But, yeah, when we learned about it being, like, a whole different game at some point, or just, like, a different protagonist, not Star Fox, that made a lot more sense, because... from Star Fox and until I learned that information, it always felt odd that, okay, why do they do this one game with Star Fox where he's out of the ship and he's doing all these adventures and nothing else again and it very much felt like the black sheep of the family. I remember that one time Star Fox got out of the ship.
It's like, okay. I was surprised we never did anything. I look back on it and it seemed like it sold well enough and reviewed well enough so it was one of these things that I think there's other people that talk about it with still like gleam with this like years later, but it's not like, cause when I saw when the game was announced, I don't think people were like doing backflips over it, but they also weren't like, Oh, why are they doing this? Like, Oh yeah, I liked Star Fox Avengers. So yeah, it's, it's always felt like it's just, it's odd thing. But once you learned that, okay, it was supposed to be a different game. That's why it made sense. It was never supposed to be a Star Fox game. So that's why they never planned to
go back to that. So that's why hopefully, you know, those rumors are true and we're getting it more because I think that's like a, That could be a good thing for that franchise, is if you do a movie, these games sell, and you can get this character to be popular enough, then you don't run the risk of fatigue if it's like, oh, hey, we're going to do Avengers, and then a couple years from now we'll do an on-the-rails shooter again, then vice versa. And Star Fox, the franchise, not only does Nintendo bring back these characters to Donkey Kong, Star Fox, to give them some more love, that franchise in general is needed a lot to love because that original game has been kind of remade or remastered or
whatever you want to call it about four times. Then you had this, and then you had like Star Fox Assault, which Taylor really enjoys. But that's, again, a whole different Star Fox game that I think has its own fan community but doesn't capture it overall. And same thing with Adventures. It wouldn't be for everybody, right?
It's interesting that GameCube was the one time that they switched it up.
Yeah.
And they've never done it since.
And then same thing, if you love Star Fox, you might not like this, right? So I'm very curious if they can get this character and franchise back to health like what would be the plans with starfox and even now we don't know because like okay they just remade the original game right so it's um yeah it's a very you know obviously it got turned from one given to another but it's a very interesting slice of the starfox franchise but that's why i feel like you don't see it represented anywhere because it's just like ah that kind of happened accidentally you know but then it's still in canon they made like crystal his like wife And they had like a child together.
Oh my God.
It's there. Like there's, so it's like, it's just, it's just Nintendo being Nintendo, I guess. That's what I tell myself, you know? So. Yeah.
This game has so many very distinct, like, sound bites or like, you know, lines that characters say.
You pay this much.
Yeah. I was going to ask, is there one that's like an earworm for you that you just think about every once in a while? That's the one.
That or just the other one is Tricky saying, wait up, Fox. I always think about that.
I'm hungry.
Yeah. The wait up, Fox, I'll think about when I'm walking with the kids. And then just anything Fox is doing. Yeah, like his jumps and his rolls.
His sounds are so weird in this game. Yeah, yeah.
Well, he's out of the ship. He's not used to it. So, yeah, I'd say it's a shopkeeper. It's, wait up, Fox. It's that. And then also, because I felt like, as a kid, it took me so long to get there, was a stone guy. You cannot go to Gokor Palace right now. I feel like I'd do something. The map, it's so funny.
We haven't talked about this. When you pause the game, It comes with an icon, and you got Slippy, you got Sergeant Pepper, and then you got, what's Hare's name again?
Peppy. What is his name?
Is it Peppy? What's the sergeant's name then?
It's Sergeant Pepper and Peppy Hare.
Right. That's why it always confused me. So anyway, so when you pause them, you got Pepper Hare. He just kind of shows you.
Peppy Hare. Peppy Hare.
Peppy Hare. He just shows you a bunch of unlocks and everything. Wait, Sergeant Peppy Hare?
Sergeant Pepper is the commander. And Peppy Hair is the guy on the Star Fox crew.
Peppy Hair. Sergeant Pepper. He's the one. You can pause. He just shows you the unlocks. Things you could get. Items, et cetera. Okay, cool.
Which I never looked at ever. I think twice in the game I looked at it.
I didn't really look at this. But as a kid, I would just examine the whole time. And then you get Pepper Hair, who he pulls up the whole map.
Peppy Hair.
Wait. Peppy Hair. Peppy Hair. What's called Peppy? Pepper and Peppy. The rabbit. When you pull up, he'll give you the map, and then where you're supposed to go is flashing. As I said before, sometimes the maps are very confusing, and there's little... Some are straightforward, and some are... places that you have to, oh, you gotta go here and you gotta go underground, you gotta go to a little hole.
Where I'm trying to get to, though, is the other one is Slippy. And Slippy will either do this. He'll tell you, over-explain what you need to do and make it crystal clear. He'll tell you very... little information or he'll just say you gotta check your map and check with Peppy and then when you look at Peppy it's like I have no idea what I'm doing.
And I think in the first half of the game Slippy was crushing it he was helping me a lot he was over explaining in a way that I really needed because again I was really stuck in needed guides And then the second half of the game when things get more complex and you got to backtrack like crazy, he was fucking on break or something like that. He was on lunch at that point. He's not helping me at all. Just check back your map, Fox.
Oh, just talk. Because especially too, it'll be like, oh, go talk to this whatever dinosaur. And it's just like, that doesn't help me at all. So you're already in the map location. You've never met this dinosaur. What am I supposed to look out for? You know, so I think that's the time I picked up the guides tonight in the puzzles. It was like, just sometimes to find a, what is the next step or find the like, what is the exact location I'm going for? But I do appreciate that. I like the whole team with you. For some reason, Falco's like, him and Falk's like feuding. He's just gone. Because even at the end of this game, it's like, are you fine? Have you welcomed me back?
And it's like, what is this? What do you mean? What's the subplot we're missing on?
I like his fit. I wish they had that outfit in Smash as a costume.
I don't mind the outfit, but his face has a different look going on. As we told the last remake, these characters, ever-changing, you know? Yeah.
I was, I was definitely disappointed that Falco was absent and I didn't Google it in, in hopes that he would show up and he does, but it is literally in the last, uh, you know, five minutes of the game, right? He comes in there like the second, third phase of the boss fight and is there for a cut scene.
So that was a little disappointing for me because I'm a big Falco fan, especially on the GameCube. In Melee, he's one of my favorite characters to play as. So I was hoping for some more Falco action. Unfortunately, I guess fortunately I did get a little bit of that. But yeah, it's weird too because I guess the narrative of that is based off a game prior to this that I didn't really play, so it wasn't, like, meaningful for me that he wasn't there. It was just like, no, where's my favorite guy? I love Falco. I want him here.
I didn't know what that narrative was, because when he was just referring to, like, oh, yeah, like, you know, we all good now? Can I fly with you again? It's like, I don't know any of this, but... Fair enough. Happy save the day, you know?
Yeah. Let's take a quick break here to thank our wonderful Patreon producers. They are April of Darkness Jack Grant, Superbad Mike, TGGLM69AKNRF, Hidalgo, Cocktail Clay, John with no H, Sam Green, John M, Matthew Fletcher, and Summer Hancy. Thank you guys all so much for supporting the show, keeping the lights on here. And, you know, Patreon's a great place to go to support the show because you get episodes early. You get episodes ad-free. You get all sorts of voting power. You can make us watch things. You can join us on After 9, which happened last weekend.
It's really just the best place if you want. If you like what we do here, it's the best place to throw a dollar. It goes the furthest. And then you get also a ton of benefits from it. And we just keep adding more benefits. And we don't even have much time these days, but we still keep adding benefits.
And I don't know how we do it. It's almost an impossible task. Travis, do you want to talk a little bit about the upcoming 24-hour stream that's happening?
Yeah. November 7th, starting at 9 a.m.
PDT.
So we talk about the newscast. We are PDT now. But yeah, a whole bunch of events. That is our... Obviously, we have some stuff. GV Day is usually more like the podcast and do some gaming. This is a reverse, where this is majority gaming. We have some trivia. We'll always be hanging out, talking and whatnot, but this is the big one. So we're going to be having Taylor and Kirkland doing a Call of Duty match, their fifth ever tiebreaker. That'll be fun. Taylor's accepted the challenge for Star Wars Alliance. He's going to be playing some Galactic Racer.
We're going to be cheering him on. We have our six-person, or no, six-round tournament with us and a bunch of other people of GD's past. And it's a weird semi-round ROM, semi-points-based, lots of things going on. The wheels there. So anytime the wheels are involved, that's a good time. We're going to be playing some Halloween, some Resident Evil. We're going to do probably our last ever, I won't say last ever, but before we go to GTA 6. A nice GTA playthrough.
We're going to be doing the six most wanted star challenge, see who can survive the longest, and just one bragging rights, you know, so it's going to be a good time.
Well, probably what about Star Fox, since you have it on the Switch, right? I'd love to play that.
Well, yeah, I think I have to add it. I've got to check out what the multiplayer is. I can't remember if it was a versus or a.
They added something, right? They did.
It's multiplayer where you can play at the same time. So if it's versus, I might have to throw it in the gauntlet list before.
We spin that wheel on Wednesday. That would be really cool.
But either way, there is multiplayer. So I'm not sure if it's just multiplayer versus, or it's like you first like.
Some other big team. It'd be a good Wii Hours whip out, too.
Absolutely. And they got some cool one-liners. Yeah, it's going to be a good time. Yeah, donate. There's lots of links on our social media, Discord. If you have any problem finding anything, donating, or buying the shirts, just let us know. And we can help you on all the proceeds go towards BC Children's Hospital. And there's going to be a bevy of unlocks and stuff that will be all announced next week. We've been slowly rolling them out.
But next week we'll have the full schedule. And, yeah, it's going to be a good time. We always, that's, you know, next to GB Day, those are my two favorite days of the year of the podcast because we just have so much fun. This is a different time because, you know, GB Day, sometimes near the end we're getting tired and wacky. And it's like, okay, we've only got an hour left. This is the stream where, no, we've got 12 to 13 hours left. And we've got to power through. So I'm excited to have us all there.
together and some of the guests as well so.
It's gonna be great yeah uh let's jump to a quick ad break we'll be right back okay we are back um i don't think this is a game by any means that we'll talk about like in order but let's talk about the opening of this game because it is distinctly different from the rest of the game because at the start of the game you start off as crystal you play for crystal for what half an hour 45 minutes something like that yeah um before she gets locked up And then that's when you take over as Star Fox. And honestly, I thought when that transition happened that that was maybe going to be something to look for.
I think that was another reason why I was like, ooh, Falco. I'm going to play as Falco at some point. And then Falco was not present. I guess I'm not playing as Falco in this game. And then after like five hours, I was like, okay, I guess I only play as Star Fox in this Star Fox game. Not complaining about it, but I wondered if we were going to be going multi-character on this thing. I actually really liked this sequence for what it is. I think I could definitely see the argument where if you're replaying this game and you've played it a bunch of times, maybe the sequence is kind of slow and like a long tutorial.
Lots of cut scenes too in there. Chris is sneaking around.
Yeah, not a lot of skippable cut scenes in this game. I learned when I was watching a speed run for this game. I was like, oh yeah, you just can't skip any of these cut scenes. You just gotta watch all of them. And sometimes... you will die, and then you've got to re-watch cutscenes, which I also learned.
That's what's good about the state saves where you talked about.
I think this game starts off with amazing atmosphere. We've got a space, we've got an airship, we've got Crystal flying on a pterodactyl, we've got a big villain introduced. There's a lot of crazy stuff. A lot of Na'vi vibes because Crystal is blue and she's connected to her pterodactyl and she's speaking in a very Na'vi-esque language. So that was kind of crazy. But I really like the intro sequence and just in general, I liked playing as Crystal for a bit. And I think I was then pretty disappointed that she just gets locked up and spends most of the game in a thing where it's not like she can even communicate. It's not like she's in a prison cell and you can go talk to her.
She just is in this little... what is it called, like, when you're submerged in one of those, like, tubes or whatever, like, almost, like, cryogenically frozen or something like that?
Yeah, I'll take that, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, yeah, you just, like, you just don't really get to interact with her, and then she comes back at the end of the game and is, like, has, like, sexy saxophones playing when she's moving her big hips around.
His blood is boiling or whatever.
I think that I was surprised about this because as a big Smash Bros. fan, again, whenever people are speculating about the next games or rosters, characters they could add, when it comes to Star Fox as a series, Crystal's always top of the list. People want Crystal in there. I think it would be good for variety, but also she, she, you know, has like a staff, like an iconic kind of weapon. And I think maybe because of that, I assume that she'd be a bigger part of this game. Um, you play as her for 30, 45 minutes and then she's not really a part of it at all. And so that was kind of disappointing for me. I just, I wanted to get to know her a bit more, spend more time with her. So yeah, I'd say that was, uh,
definitely a con for me in this game is, uh, you know, the, uh, uh, i i mean i like starfox and is and tricky and i like a lot of other characters but i wanted to have more crystal in this game i wish they found a way to make that happen where you unlock her and then you are together for like three or four hours maybe and then you beat the game something like.
That yeah yeah that's why i was always like because now we're at the point where okay we're trying to get as many not as many but just new smash people maybe who was left okay i understand that but that's why anytime crystals always come up i've been like i don't know she's like a big part of Star Fox, but like in concept only, not really that big. She's just a MacGuffin. She's just like a MacGuffin. She's a damsel in distress. Yeah. And then at the end with, yeah, which she's just like, uh, you know, Star, she's attracted to Star Fox and stuff. I think she has like the Lola bunny effect for a certain generation where it's, you know, this.
This, he's not wearing a lot of clothes.
Animal lady. That's very scantily clad. So I'm sure a lot of people remember that way, but, uh, yeah, you know, she's my other Star Fox show. And yeah, I agree with you. I think, There's a few things with the ending I would have changed, and I think that would have been good to have her there. I don't know why.
I get why, but why we didn't just even do a little bit of a general scale sort of battle. I semi-like the fake-out, but don't at the same time when you go to fight and you swing at him, and then all of a sudden he's like, and the spirit goes out of him. I get why. Am I good to talk about Andross here, or should I wait for a little bit?
Go for it.
Let's do it. The only thing is because when I was replaying this, and I just remember as a kid, I don't think it stung with me as much, but I think it's weird where... Okay, so you do space missions, right? You do some dogfighting, and... start that way with Star Fox in the cloud and you land on whatever the, I can't remember what the actual planet is, like our main planet. Do you remember the name of it?
Dinosaur planet, I think.
I think you're right. Because all of them have like, they're like, oh, Cape Claw. They got names.
They have very classic rare level names.
Yeah, but then there's just Dinosaur planet. So it's okay. And then usually what you do once you're in Dinosaur Planet, there's like four to five other planets you fly to throughout the game. And to get there, you go in there and you do a little mini game. And sometimes you just got to find one gold ring. Sometimes you got to get them all. So the space combat is a part of this game. But I feel like all of them, other than maybe get all nine gold rings, they feel like a very.
The last one screwed me up. But other than that, it's just something that takes up... 60 seconds of your time.
And then you move on. It just feels like it is a muted version of the on-rails game, right? To the point where I think I like that as the opening, but I don't think I need these transitions or to me it should be a thing where you do it once and it's unlocked. You don't have to fight that anymore unless you want to, right? If you want to replay or just go through it. So the fact that the final battle of this is you go to fight General Scales, you hit him, it's like a fake out and then his soul gets absorbed away and of course Star Fox is like, I know that voice. I've heard that before. And then the final mission is you're on rail shooting and I think it's such an odd choice for a game that's like, what, 15% of this game?
Not even? 10%?
5%? Yeah, and I'm fine if it.
Was a portion of the final battle, like you kind of do that, then you fight or you have a big fight, then you go up, okay. But to make that the final, final thing, it's odd. Like you said, you could have had Crystal there. She could have been flying around with you or you could have done a fight scene where it's like you and Crystal back to back fighting all these dinosaurs and scales and then the claws come out. It just feels like such a, an odd ending, you know?
Well, second to that is the opening of this game introduces our villain, General Scales, who when I first saw him, I was so excited because I'm like, oh, this guy? I didn't know there was a guy like this in Star Fox. This guy is just K. Rool. They're just doing K. Rool again. And I love K. Rool, so I can't wait to see what General Scales is all about.
And again, just like Crystal, he's absent for the whole game. And then he comes back in the very end of the game for his big epic boss fight. And then he just drops dead and you don't even get to fight him.
That was.
an insane choice for me and then again because of your point then you go to space so you don't really get like a big final battle with you on the ground you don't really get that moment and so I the fact that General Scales doesn't have a boss fight is one of the most wild choices for me like they just rug pull and then give you Andross and again I'm not really nostalgic for these prior games I know Andross is obviously because he's you know that big of a character but it doesn't really mean much for me I was more hyped when Falco came out for example But yeah, General Scales, that is an insane choice to me. That's just not even a gameplay mechanic.
It's fighting this guy who's set up as this big bad the whole game. The thing you're going after, the thing you're trying to take down is General Scales Army. It's a wild choice.
And that's why I didn't want... I don't think it's that much of a spoiler. I don't know. Let's just say there's a new Switch game that did a very similar thing. You know what I'm talking about, right? Yeah, so I don't spoil it. So, and I didn't want to bring up on that review, but when that happened, I was like, oh, this is exactly like that. So it's, it's, I think it's such a, and even with Nintendo, like Luigi's Mansion, like there's a form of Bowser as well in there. Like eventually it's like, oh, it's just the booze.
It's just a go, but like, okay, of course Bowser's here. They always, not always, but they, I think they tend to do that in the games that I've played or the series ones that I'm like, oh, this is something new. And that's like, well, we got to get back there. It's the same thing I complain in Arkham Origins they did a prequel for the Arkham series and finally oh the first game of the Joker being the bad guy and then the whole twist is Joker's pretending to be a different bad guy and he takes off the mask as Joker and it's like really it's so funny how video games it's like you're already there like you've already bought it's not like in the marketing if it's like hey let's reveal Joker's in there let's reveal that you
know Andross is in here Why do you have to do the twist? Even then, scales have a ship then. Why doesn't he have a ship and you go up and you fight him? It's just weird where I feel like video games.
He has an airship at the start of the game.
Yeah, fight that, right? Or he has a different version. It's weird games do that so much of, well, we better go back to the original boss because let's tie it all together. You don't need that. It's a weird thing and I think Nintendo does it a lot because I just... I don't know why they're maybe just... I won't say obsessed, but they view legacy as a very important thing, but I did not need Andross here. Andross did not fit at all. It didn't feel like a very tacked-on thing. That's where it feels like that was the whole, like, oh, well, let's make this a Star Fox game. But Scales would have been a fine enough adversary, you know? And he's because he's being mean to Crystal.
I don't need much. I just need, like, a green lizard-looking guy, and I'm in.
And then what's Andross doing? Like, oh, I took over the, like, this General Scarys to go to this planet? Like, I guess it's his plan? All right. So very tacked-on. And, yeah, the ending battlefields is, like, very distant from the rest of the game even those things you do in the game it's very to me between that and even the cut scene with her just coming to the ship the ending is very lackluster of this game and I think that's why I've never like once I beat as a kid never I'm not dying to like oh I gotta fight Andross again because the adventure is the meat you know.
Yeah I mean I think that what really took the wind out of the sails of the airship for me was the fact that the end boss fight is really really fucking hard like it is ridiculously difficult and that's with me using a ton of save states i use that like every 30 seconds that i made good progress i would like make a new save state and just get through this because in the final boss fight you like there's like a two-phase thing where there's like a face and then there's like andross's head and then andross when when it goes that you fight the face you like shoot the little emblems or whatever on the mask thing and then andross flips around and you fight him for a little bit. After a while, he starts sucking
you in, like a little vortex tunnel. And whenever he sucks you in, if he sucks you in, it flips back to the mask face, and you've got to shoot that again. And I did that for a good 20, 25 minutes before I realized that, oh, I'm supposed to be able to dodge his mouth attack.
Yeah, you've got to do the....
In that moment, when I looked up a guide for what I was doing wrong there, in that moment, that's when I learned that this game had a barrel roll.
Oh, you didn't know that? Okay.
Because you never need to, because the flight sequences are so minor. Again, I'm not a big... I don't really play these games. I know barrel roll is a thing, because that's an iconic memed line, but I just never felt the need to ever barrel roll in this game, because the flight sequences are so minor and easy and straightforward and whatnot. So I just didn't even know there was a barrel roll. On top of that, even if I did, you have to fucking mash the button in such an unintuitive way that you would think it would be like you got to do it three times or you got to do like in a specific time in your place but no you just have to mash the hell out of that stick.
There's a couple mashing massacres.
There's so much mashing in this game and as an old man with arthritic hands like i i hate that in games and so The mashing really pissed me off.
So luckily, I think she has headphones on, so I don't think she can hear me, but she embarrassed me twice. There's two times in this game where I agree with everything you said about the final boss battle there. I knew about the barrel roll, so that helped me, but it was a pain. Yeah, I used safe states the whole time. I had 1.3 different slots going on. It was brutal, and I don't know how young Travis did it.
I guess I just had that amount of time, and I was like, you know what? If I can do this again... it was bringing back, like, Nightmare to me playing Elden Ring. I was like, man, this is where I feel like I'm stuck in there. So I was like, okay, if I have the mindset, but no state saves there. But anyways, there's two other times in this game that you have to do a very big A button mash, and it's in one area where you gotta do a test of strength against a dinosaur, and then there's another where you gotta get a Krakoa spirit, and it's another test of strength, but it's like multiple you have to do that. I... did a save state, and I had to, not in the middle, but just right before, because the same thing, like, anytime you don't get it, you gotta
watch this cutscene over and over again. Brutal. And I was, the first one, which was the test of strength, I was tapping it a bunch, could never get it. And this was the point where I went on Reddit, and I saw stories where people were like, yeah, I was stuck on this for a year. I couldn't get past this.
Or I had to have my buddy come over and do it. So eventually what I had to do, I had to do full, like, put the remote on the ground, and hold it, and do that. Now, this is some dirt on Emily, then, for her being in the gauntlet coming up. She did both of them for a try. Like, put me to shame. No gimmick, no due diligence. Mom strength. Yeah, I've always known she's a button masher, because I see her in Mario Party, but I was like, okay, she's the ultimate button masher I know. You take this. You try it. She just did it both times, because I saved them. I'm like, I need her to test this out, because eventually I did, but I felt like I was, not felt like, I was like, breaking a sweat, using all, like,
I have to pinpoint, I can't miss a single one. It was... Like, and I can't remember as a kid, and especially me, I'm playing with a GameCube controller too. So I had the big A, which that also, I forgot, I should have said in the opening, helped big time nostalgia playing with the GameCube controller, playing this game was fantastic.
But yeah, I had a much bigger A button and that didn't help me at all. It was, they brutalize you sometimes in this game. So, yeah.
Yeah, I don't like button mash. It just hurts my hands. Like, why would I want to do this? And so, yeah, if I ever failed one of those, that felt, horrible and i failed all of them on the first time because they're all so damn hard and then in the final boss fight you got to do it multiple times it's fucking so stupid so yeah that's uh that's some definitely some complaints on.
That and the other one i use as a safe state too a lot is the um when we had to go around circles and a bunch of ships would come out and you'd have to shoot them and then you'd have to shoot their tower down.
Oh, that one was really hard.
Yes. Because at first, that's when I did pull the guide through because I wasn't shooting the towers. I was just shooting the ships. I was like, well, what am I doing here? I keep doing this and nothing's happening. I was like, oh, yeah, shoot these towers. Okay. But even then, it was still like I would do that, do a save because it was, again, because it's not like in chunks. You lose, oh, you start all the way over and you're doing the you're almost on rails again, right?
So it's like, oh, I have to stick to this whole thing. So there's some frustrating.
Things in this game.
Hard game.
Hard game. And there's no difficulty selector at the beginning.
No.
There's not skill tree or grinding you could do. So you're kind of... You kind of just got to power through these things. I guess there is a couple... You could miss some of the I don't think you ever miss a health upgrade, right? You can miss some of the like staff upgrades. I think you could probably skip some of those. But those are not really what are going to like hold you back for the most part.
So, and then they're like, I got something for you, Fox. And then what did you think about? Obviously it stops near the end of the game, but at the beginning, did you get tired of Fox's celebration of finding something new? Oh yeah.
I was going to, I was going to, I was going to ask you to like do your best impression of that because like the timing is so weird where he like, I can't even remember. Now it's been a couple weeks since I played the game. But he kind of pumps his fist and then has his face reaction. It is so weird. And it's the exact same as Zelda, right?
Where it's him lifting the thing up into the sky and has a little sound effect. I kind of never got tired of it because of how silly and stupid it was.
Yeah, I know.
It would be a good cheer.
Yeah, I agree with you. I should. I should be like, oh, I want to skip this. But no, it's great every time the music, the China comes in. It's fantastic. Yeah.
I mean, there's a cheesiness to this game of quirkiness and like Fox as a character, such a weird, like, cause he is like the master of snark. He's so snarky. Like these people are like their families have been ripped away from them. Their planet is being ripped apart.
It's a slave situation. And Fox is mouthing the balls.
And he is, just like, oh my God, I'm so annoyed with you.
I don't know if I got time for this. It's like, he's such a piece of shit.
He's such a piece of shit.
Maybe the ending when he makes Tricky an honorary member of Star Fox, which I would love to, I hope they, you know, when we do Star Fox Adventures 2, if they would refer to that a little bit. But yeah, he is, he's a real piece in this game to the point where it's like, Crystal, you got to stay away from this guy. But at the end, he always means well. But even then too, I can't remember in the middle when he gets like his mother out and then he calls Pepe here. He's just like, oh, I think we're done here. He's like, but Fox, the whole planet's still in ruins. Oh, I guess you're right. It's like he just wants to get out of there, which, you know, it's funny because I talked to you in the remake where I said that. I said they were
really hitting on him being like Guardians of the Galaxy, like almost mercenary bounty hunter things. And I was like, I don't know how much I love that. I think I was just completely wrong. You know, I think Fox has always been kind of like, I know he's been like attitude-wise kind of a piece of shit-y, But I always thought it was like Han Solo. Like, oh, when Han Solo's there, he's a jerk, but he's on the mission.
He's ready to go. He's on your team. Where Fox, like, now multiple things to me about, yeah, maybe he's not the greatest guy and he's just very money-based and he does stick around and save them, but it takes a lot of arm twisting. But again, it makes something, he's got a fun look and. I don't know. There's some about Fox McCloud and the whole crew that make you still like, what is the adventure? I want to see what's going on. I know.
I feel like I need more of the backstory. But it's funny, too, the contrast of that kind of personality mixed with the fact that he's such a doofus in this game, too, with so many of the sound effects. His roll sound effects are the weirdest sounds ever. They're really high-pitched and squealing and whining in a weird way.
And then... I have never seen a video game character in my life, let alone a character that I associate with such agility and fine, crisp movement as I do as Fox from Smash Bros. I've never seen a video game character who has a more awkward, shitty ladder climb animation in my life. It is so slow. It's the worst technique, especially as a climber. I'm offended by how bad he is at climbing. It is ridiculous. That was one thing that... I mean, a lot of, with the shop, I love the shop for how weird the shopkeeper is, but also like having to go up and down that ladder every time. And, like, how slow it is to buy items is crazy.
It sucks, yeah.
So, yeah, there's certain things that annoy me, but I really like the shopkeeper for just how weird their character is.
Yeah.
And you pay this price. And it's, like, so much of this game, like, the UI is all over the place. But weirdly, when you're buying stuff, there's no UI. Like, the first couple times I bought stuff, I didn't realize that, like, I could hit A to buy the thing because all the props go away on the screen and you just have to, like, hit A. It's, like, intuitive, but it's just kind of weird at the same time.
So.
and yeah like you mostly just buy maps in this game like that's mostly all of what you're buying and then a couple like core items that you cannot buy until you get like a big enough pouch to carry it in a very zelda-like way so uh it was a place i'd come back coming back to every once in a while when i collected some more bugs and whatnot uh because it's nice right there in the hub but yeah i just i particularly liked the shopkeeper character he's.
Great yeah he just is perfect like shade nest I kind of forgot till like the back half of the game that you could hang on with the price and try to like, like get it for cheaper or you could pay more for some reason. Um, cause I screwed this up at one point, I needed energy cells. So I bought a bunch and I kept it. He said, you pay this much. It was 10. So I would give him 20 cause I'd want to, but then I actually found, I was just giving him extra 10 for no reason. So I spent a lot of bucks, but.
Yeah, you can buy multiple, the same thing you have to get. Yeah.
You gotta buy, buy, buy every time. So, That's stuff we don't need in Star Fox Ventures, too.
A huge character in this game that we haven't talked about yet. How do you feel about Tricky? What's your opinion on Tricky?
You know, he should annoy me. Because I do think he is an annoying character. But I think I don't mind.
He's the little brother kind of archetype.
I think why I don't mind is because it is Star Fox in a world that he has completely no idea about. Doesn't know what these dinosaurs, doesn't know how they operate. I, I, I feel like it is just like kind of, that is a very Star Wars trope of, Oh, what do I do here? It's like, well, you'll need this droid with you to get you through the land.
It's like, that's to me, tricky, tricky. It's like the R2D2 where I think he's more annoying than him, but, um, no, I, I like, I still like tricky again. You got vocal stims. I didn't mind tricky. So, uh, I thought I could be annoyed with him, but you make a movie, get him in there. Yeah.
I surprisingly feel the same way. I really like tricky. I want more tricky in my life. I think mechanically, I think it's kind of interesting. Like you have this character who's kind of constantly with you. I always like that in the game. I just like having companions. I think it's fun to have like a little buddy by your side. He does a lot of like usually environmental interaction, things like burning down this wall or whatever it is, or digging up this, this thing. And you've got to feed him, which sometimes can be annoying. But honestly, for the most part, I kind of liked it. I kind of dug having to feed this guy, keep him happy, get him ready to go. Again, every once in a while I did annoy him because it's a longer game
to have to babysit this guy for this whole time. But it was a character that I was glad to have. And the sequences in the game, when I didn't have one with me, I was missing him a little bit. There's certain sequences when you fly to different planets where he can't come with you, or the final sequence. And it's not like I had some big emotional reaction when they had to say goodbye. You know, it didn't really, I wasn't weeping or anything like that. But I like Tricky.
I like Tricky and I think it added like a nice little mechanical something to the game. Because it is kind of weird like the, your inventory bar, first of all, it looks really weird. Like it's like it drops down from the top right in like vertical bars in a way that I've never seen a game have an inventory laid out this way. You kind of have your three parts to it where you have like your spells on one thing. uh, that you, like your staff spell abilities, you have your kind of key items or like money.
It's just like any, any object you have. And then like tricky has his own page too, of all this stuff going on there. You can like buy a ball that you can play with tricky. And I could never figure out like what that did, if anything, other than just like a fun, a fun thing to play with.
Yeah.
You can just like play catch. So cute. Love that.
It's like a red dad. When you just like brush your horse, you're just like, you're just bonding, you know? Yeah.
I wish there was a way to put more abilities on hotkey, right? Because like you think about like Zelda, usually you get like three slots or yeah, usually it's three, right? It's like the three D pads and then like not all the four of the D pads. Usually it's three and I think, in the later games you get like different hockeys and stuff, but yeah, it's something that I wish you could have put a little bit more because to me, it felt like I always needed the long range, uh, like blaster. I felt like I couldn't really justify putting anything else on the, maybe I'd put on like the big ground slam when I was in that one place where I had to kill like four T-Rexes in a row.
That was like the only way to do it. Um, but it just felt like kind of undercooked a little bit in terms of that. And I don't know, I wish the spells were a little bit more inter interwoven, but I thought, uh, I was always, it was always satisfied when I got a new like a staff ability or new key item, whatever it was. Like I liked having like the zoom in lens or like the ability.
I like it. I think it's cool. You could turn off the map on and off. I liked the way that was integrated into the menu. I thought that was just kind of fun, a little bit different, even like pausing and having like the floating heads there and you can scroll through the menu. I just really liked the UI in this game. I think it's pretty stylish, pretty weird, very early two thousands, very game cube. I love how so many GameCube games had the GameCube buttons in the UI of the game. And so, yeah, I kind of really dug all that element, like the aesthetics around the UI.
Yeah, I agree with you. you on the aesthetics. I do think, yeah, more hotkeys would have been nice, considering, like you said, with Tricky and Staff, there's quite a few powers you do have. It's not like, okay, if there's only four, fine, but it's like, you got a lot of stuff you can do, so that would have been vital, but I usually just kept the fire on there and then would use the other stuff sporadically, so.
One thing I didn't realize until, again, because of how I was playing it on Nintendo Switch Online, is I never really closed this game, right? I just turned my Switch off and picked up with it. But I only realized this after I beat the game and went back to the menu, is that when you save and exit to the menu... On your save file, it tells you the last three things you did, like the last three missions or activities you did. It's a feature that wasn't really helpful for me because I didn't realize it was a thing. But I think that is a thing that every game needs, especially like Metroidvanias or games like this where you're kind of going through mazy sequences. Yeah, give me a reminder of the last things I did when
I was playing this game. That's a cool feature that would have been great. I'm sure that helped you a lot as a kid when you were playing this, and you probably forgot about that.
I didn't use that at all this time, and I did forget about it, so yeah.
Yeah, so I thought that was a cute little thing that was in there. Is there any other characters we haven't... We've kind of covered all the characters at this point, right?
Yeah, no, because all the dinosaurs, they're very just generic. It's like, oh, Fox, thank you for coming to save us. You had his mother that's dying, and... sometimes everything. So, um, you got the woolly mammoths, but yeah, I think they're all kind of like, uh, you know, archetypes. So yeah.
Combat. I don't know if there's too much to say here. It's a pretty, it's a very classic, like Zelda style thing. And then you have like your long range shot, you have your big stun to me. It actually reminded me a lot. And even like the UI of like the hearts, uh, over the enemy's head. It reminded me a lot of the Lego games and that combat style where it's mostly button mashy with big long Jedi combos. And then the fact that it had the same hearts as the Lego games I thought was interesting. I feel like the first Lego games probably didn't come out until after this. But it was so close in a way that was mysteriously close for me. Lego Star Wars... When did the first one come out?
04 sounds like that is in my soul right there. or 03 maybe even.
I think, yeah, so definitely after this, but yeah, that was, it was weirdly close to me.
Yeah. Yeah, it's, I remember enjoying the combat a lot more as a youngin. I think that's the thing that took the deepest dive here was, you know, I mean, it's just because I want to finish it at a time, but there's many times where I'm like, I'm just running away. I'm not finding them where I used to, I feel like the opposite.
You don't really get a reward for it, so you don't really need to unless you have to.
Yeah, where I remember opposite as a kid is like, because I think again that, that, that gleam of all star Fox out of the ship. It's like, I'd kill these enemies. It felt like it'd be a little while before he got dinosaurs. And when they come, it's like, Oh, I get to fight some dinosaurs. But yeah, if you could have just got like a few different variations of a combo or some more do, because there are some of the, you roll and then do your hit. He'll do like a different, like a special jump or something, but definitely some variety would be nice in a, in a future one. So yeah, I, I started to avoid the combat. I don't know, maybe 20, 30% in as okay. There's, there's not much here. So, And that's why maybe that's
the other thing too. I'm saying, oh, I want general skills battle. Maybe it just would have been that. So maybe that's why they didn't do it because they didn't have anything that great to do. So.
Yeah, I think, I think that's a fair criticism. I liked it for, for what it was. I thought it was like, I just think it was like the animations were, were fun on the combo attacks.
Yeah.
So it worked for me. And like you, none of the enemies, even the tankier ones are ever really that tanky. It didn't feel like, so I think that that helped as well. Um, I, I really liked, I was kind of surprised. I thought more of the combat would be Fox punching and kicking because, you know, this is him after he's been in a couple of smash games. And so I thought that maybe they'd incorporate. some of that into his moveset here. But no, he is using the staff exclusively. And I thought it was really fun. I always love staffs as weapons. Staffs and spears, I feel like, are very underrated in games. They're not used enough. They're really fun. That's honestly one of the big reasons why I've always wanted Crystal in Smash is because I just
want a character who uses a staff for once in my life. That's also why I want... bandana waddle d from kirby just because i don't want that spear moveset in there um but yeah it's like one of those things where man i wish that after this game came out that the next smash game which i guess would have been brawl at that point incorporated some of that into fox's moveset and like keep falco as the kind of legacy uh moveset there if you want but like yeah give fox some of these things i thought the the staff worked really well flowed it was pretty fun um and incorporate some of those powers, right? Because even like Fox's moveset in Smash 64 is completely fictional. None of that is from any game, right? Because he's always
in a ship in his games. So I thought it was weird that they then had a game that has a lot of Smash-like attacks in it, and then none of that got incorporated into his character. Probably because it wasn't a big successful game that really moved the needle much. It makes sense, I suppose. But yeah, I think, I don't know. I wish that there was, again, going back to this, like the music, I wish there was more of this game that got incorporated into Smash. I think there's so many fun ideas here that would work so well there.
Yeah, it would have been cool, kind of like how when Breath of the Wild popped off, they kind of gave Link a bit of a makeover and different bombs and stuff. I would have liked that. That would have been cool.
I think the puzzle design in this game is pretty good for the most part. A lot of it is very... It was funny, so early on, there's a really early on point in the game when there's a spirit that's hidden under a big bowl, essentially. And then the bulls slide around and you've got to watch them for 30 seconds and.
Figure out which bull.
When that happened, I was like, oh, this is a rare game. This is the most rare-ass puzzle I've ever seen in my entire life. So that was maybe the low point. But I think there was actually some really good puzzles here. The only downside is kind of what we talked about. If you get past the puzzle and then you die or lose a fight and have to reload a cutscene and do a slow block pushing puzzle again, that can be... a very annoying thing. But I thought there was a lot of really fun puzzles to be found in here. A lot of them were like timing based.
You got to do this thing and get to this thing in a certain amount of time. There was some good block pushing ones. Like the ones I really liked were in that world with the T-Rexes where there was like those sun and moon blocks that you had to push in certain ways. I thought that was pretty fun. So yeah, I quite enjoyed a lot of the puzzles because yeah, this is kind of like there's a bit of combat in there. There's a bit of puzzle solving, a bit of exploration. It's kind of got a lot of traversal, not a ton of like platforming, platforming, but yeah, definitely a lot of traversal.
Um, but yeah, I think Fox moves is very, very like blocky when like jumps can be a little fluid.
Yeah. But honestly, I think for like all those verticals like work. Uh, and so, uh, whenever I just stopped to do a puzzle, I was usually into it. And whenever I had to stop to combat, I was into it. And I think the game, just like being, again, going back to what I said earlier, like a smorgasbord, I feel like this game has a lot of really good variety and switch things up. The pacing is really good. Uh, like just through the most, most parts. So yeah, I'm a fan of the puzzles.
Yeah, no, I think it kind of like similar to the game up until the end. Good pacing, lots of differences with them, fun times and enough. Like there's certain ones that are, Oh, this is very easy. You gotta shoot, you know, a fire, make a blue flame, blue flame, or there's some, okay, I gotta sit around here and take a moment and think about this and what am I doing? The one that messed me up.
Some of them, again, I did need guides for, but, you know, that was.
Yes. One I, like, would just try and would die again. I made, like, a save to, like, go back to the beginning of it, but was the, oh, these are all pieces from the game you've been playing, and you've got to match them.
Oh, my God. I thought I'd be so good at that, and I just.
Me too. I was like, I have, like, I know, like, three of these, and then these other three, I have no clue what this is. Like, what happened here, so... Mm-hmm.
Yeah. Any... I think I have like a couple like in wrapping up questions, but any other things about the game we haven't talked about yet?
Let me see if I got anything else in my... No, nothing that we haven't hit on like in overalls or kind of touched upon.
Is there like a favorite area for you that comes to mind?
It's funny because I don't know if it's just because I've played it so many times, but it is the first area you unlock with the woolly mammoths and the snow. I'm a sucker for snow, but I like that whole area.
I do like that part too.
Yeah, I like the caves. I love the mission where you have to ride the mammoth through a snowstorm. So they're all good. I like that one. I actually do like Cape Claw quite a bit.
Me too.
It feels like it's ripped out of a Donkey Kong game, so that's probably why too. Totally. Yeah, I think... I think for some reason Wall City is just kind of fine. It's very watery, but then it's like a weird kind of location. It's just kind of like maybe annoying. Um, the lava plants fun enough. And then, um, yeah, I like the world. Yeah. And then we just talked about, yeah, the one with the temple and stuff. That one, that one's cool too.
Cloud runner fortress is one that comes to mind for me. I thought that was like a pretty cool spot.
Yeah.
The dark ice mines. I really liked the vibe there. That was like very surprising to me.
I like the mines. Yeah. The cloud runner for me, it was just like a, It was a weird mix because the bottom and the floor was all like lots of water and you jumped around and the top was the temple. So that was more of the weirder one for me. But yeah, I think my favorite overall is where the snow mammoths are. It's a good time.
Yeah. Yeah, I guess so my last kind of question for you because we've already discussed what we're going to do next. We're going to do Banjo next for our rare. But yeah, so obviously we talked about this where there's, you know, and rumors a swirl of possibly another Not Star Fox Adventures 2, but another, like, maybe Star Fox in this kind of setting. Who knows? I could very well see in the modern age it being more of an open-worldy kind of game instead of the kind of Ocarina open-worldiness of this.
Yeah, you're probably right.
Just because that's kind of where we're at. But who knows? Metroid Prime 4 Beyond had some open-worldy sections, but it was still somewhat of a more linear game. So I guess I could see them going either way with it. But yeah, if that is in the works and that is something that's going to come out in the next couple years, what is it from this that you want them to carry forward? What are some things that you think they got right here that you hope that they they uh bring.
With them yeah so i think obviously the first one is it was accidentally happened of them kind of falling back into oh like starfox dinosaurs they need to do that again the location should be again no bring up andross no oh it's this i was trying to find fox's dad or something it that's what i think stood out about this game and it's very much like luigi's mansion like there's obviously the ghosts and everything in mario but to actually like hey we're gonna pluck luigi not mario we're gonna pluck luigi And we're going to throw them in like a haunted hotel mansion. It's like, oh, that's a cool new location. And that's why I love to be like, like to Odyssey. Cause there's, you know, do new donk city. And I feel like anytime you
can put a character, that's why I love sunshine somewhere very specific and very unique. I think that's a good thing to do. And there's obviously lots of chicken soup for the soul. You can put them in places where they're known to be, but that's why I think in this game that it did the on the rails part.
So I, so yeah, I think a planet where, New aliens, new creatures, completely something for Star Fox. I'd like that. I think you could keep... I'm 50-50 on the rail shooting. To me, I think you could keep aspects of it, but like I said, also you could make it that you could maybe skip some of those if you don't want to replay them. So I think you keep that.
I think they should have it, but it could almost be... Spoilers for Spider-Man 2. It could be like Venom, that sequence of that game, which I haven't even got to yet. But you have one sequence, which would just be really cool for the fans. But again, it's not really what the game's focusing on, but you could still get one moment like that. Maybe that could be a good way to do it.
Yeah, I agree with that.
And not the final boss fight. No, not the.
Final boss fight, no. So yeah, location... obviously something like the classic older Nintendo humor. I don't think they'd do that, but just give it its own charm because I think that's what this game has. And then, yeah, all the staff stuff, combat, keep that, but then just enhance that. Lots of options, lots of different things for Star Fox too, and make it even better. So I think those are like the top three or four around them. But I think my biggest thing is just like, yeah, it needs to be a new location that you can really If it is, I don't know if they'd call it Star Fox Adventures, but you want to feel like you are on Adventure and you are also discovering this world for the first time as Star Fox.
Yeah, I think those are all good points. I agree. I think the other thing I want, too, is just... And maybe this is a Rare thing. I feel like Rare is so good with character designs where they can have a character like General Scales who is so minute in the story, but I was still... liked the character and cared about him and then I was obviously disappointed when he didn't have a boss fight but like the shopkeeper is so iconic here and like thinking back to Donkey Kong 64 and how iconic so many characters are throughout that game and we can't remember all their names but like all the faces in the crowd like just kind of stand out in a way that is a very rare like thing but even in this game having
Tricky on your side or the fact that you pause and it's the floating heads there of your crew and they're talking to you and I think that is a very big part of Star Fox as a series not that I've played the other games Is like the crew element of it, of them popping up on the comms and talking to you and stuff like that. And so I think that's like something that can, you know, it's a way I hadn't really thought about until I think playing through this game. It kind of is a big part about Star Fox. It is like a team game and having your buddies in there. And that's not always the case. Like even Super Mario 64 is a very...
it's kind of like a loner experience. It's usually, it's just Mario in a big mansion on his own and you bump into a Koopa or a Bomb Bomb or something like that. But, you know, like Metroid is a very ominous kind of game. Luigi's Mansion is like very much its own thing. And, you know, Donkey Kong, because a lot of that is a rare thing, you do get a lot of the freak characters in there too.
But even Donkey Kong 64, you have this crew of five characters, but they never interact with each other because you like to switch between them. And so I think that's like definitely a strength of this game is interacting with all these different characters. And that's why, fox has a personality that we can talk about there's so many nintendo games where you don't even you can't even have a conversation about the character's personality because they don't really have one and i think that's great that that's a part of starfox here is that he does have a snarky weird personality and you only get that because he is interacting with other characters with tricky with people on the island with his crew and so yeah that's something
that i i don't think i ever really associate with starfox but i think that is a big part of the special sauce of it and so i hope that's something that they would keep forward in another 3d adventure um would you want more linear would you want more open world like more open world than this possibly by a bit but maybe not much.
More i think like this but then yeah a bit more open world i think just maybe it's i wince nowadays because just so many games are now just open world and i think it's just for me at the stage of life it's like oh the time sink right it's like i very much appreciate like what requiem is right where it's okay there is open world aspects to it but It is linear. It's still, like, level-based. Yeah, I think I would still like a similar trajectory of this.
Dungeon crawling, maybe change up the formula a little bit. Maybe there's one map or two that's way open world, or one planet. But, no, I'd like it to be something similar to this. So I wouldn't mind. But even then, with open world, it's like, I could see why when they pitched, like, Sonic, it's like, okay, he runs fast. And, you know, with Zelda, that to me made sense. With Star Fox, like, I don't think I'm, I don't think I'm, like, dying for that right i think i'm dying for more this experience again or even something closer to what like bonanza was you know yeah that idea you know.
Yeah i think with like typically their game is being about being out in space and flying around there is something kind of nice about like oh i feel like smaller and confined like that's that's kind of interesting about something like this yeah my last question for you if they do a sequel game is uh do you do you want to only play as fox or do you want other characters.
To play as Yeah, I wouldn't mind. I think what I would, I guess there's two ways you could go about that. Like, do you do this, the Donkey Kong 64 route where things are only for specific characters? Or do you Marvel Alliance where it's like, hey, you could play this game with anybody, but it's just whoever you prefer?
I wouldn't mind either one. I think if I have a preference, maybe it's playing as Fox, but even that's not like a big preference. That's just because I like Fox. So if they were to say like, hey, this is like, yeah i think actually i'll walk it back i think i actually wouldn't mind it because i don't think they're doing the don con i wouldn't mind in 64 where it's like you have five characters it's a four crew and it's crystal and oh this section that's a falco section this section that's a section okay um so i i would like to especially if they're trying to get people to invest in the brand again you got to make people also love the characters that are not just fox which also fox got introduced reintroduced in the mario
movie but his crew wasn't there they talked about them so Uh, it's, I'm not going to cry if they weren't all there, but yeah, sure. Give me a 64, but that to me is like a, like a 51, 49. I'm kind of fine with either way as far as the crew or just Fox and cloud. Yeah.
I think I would be, I think I'd like more than one characters. I'm cause I'm greedy. I like more than one character. I just give me Fox and Falco as a duo where like, instead of tricky and again.
I like tricky, but yeah.
Kind of bickering constantly trying to one up each other. Snarking each other out.
Crystal could be there, and they're trying to impress her a little bit. Because they've rebooted the series, I guess, right? So you could start over before he gets married and ends with Crystal. They're kind of competing for her affection, right?
And I have a weird relationship with Falco as a character. Again, I don't really play any of the actual Star Fox games. I just play Smash. And when Falco enters the melee, one of my favorite characters. I love him so much. And then with each Smash game, they keep changing Falco's moveset a bit more. And I don't like playing him anymore.
I don't like his current moveset in Ultimate. Never play as Falco. And so I don't have a touchpoint with him anymore. So I want a new game where I can play as Falco. And yeah, bring Falco back in the line. I think people like Falco. I don't think I'm the only one. I think there's something about the fact that back when I played Malin, I didn't know anything about the series that Falco was my favorite character.
I was just drawn to him as a guy. So yeah, I would definitely love to see some more of that. But Trev, this is so much fun. Again, I like that this is kind of, and very impromptu, but somehow we're doing a rare retrospective in a way that's really fun. And we're going in a weird order. But yeah, Banjo I think makes sense as the next one. unless we get pulled away by some other new legacy sequel to a Rare game, I guess that could maybe bump the order.
But hopefully that's Banjo. You know, hopefully Banjo is getting rid of it.
Yeah, I'm going to do Banjo first. And if you like it, there's always a Banjo 2.
We got that.
And I've never, I think it's on the Switch Online. I've never played that Conker game or whatever that's supposed to have some sexually explicit things there. I've never touched that game in my life. So yeah, there's definitely some things to explore there. So yeah, Banjo, I like this idea, so.
Sounds great. Okay, well, thank you, everybody, so much for listening. Travis, thank you so much for joining me, and we'll see you all again next time.
Bye.
