Hey, this is Riley.
And this is Dakota, your favorite OK Storytime host. And we've got some great stories coming up. But before that, we have a quick two-minute break from the sponsors that keep the show alive.
I was rude at my friend's wedding and I don't regret it.
Are we sure?
I feel like she maybe needs to regret it. We'll see.
I was recently asked to be a member of a friend's wedding party. However, I was the only person, not only in the wedding party, but also at the ceremony who wasn't allowed to have a plus one.
Oh my gosh. I think everybody hates your partner.
I think so.
I think that's going to be definitely something you need to address.
This was an outdoor wedding with an unlimited seating, and these people don't give a crap about the vid, so it wasn't about that. I was told it was because my relationship wasn't serious enough, despite us being together for a year. That only engaged or married couples were invited. And that they didn't want some random guy in their wedding pictures who I might not even be with later in the future. Dang, that's pretty harsh.
They've been together for a year? A year. That's kind of enough time.
I feel like that's enough time.
I think that one, it's like, I don't know. You're not married, right?
No, but I'm in a relationship for almost a year. She's going to marry him. You think so? That's the plan.
Not right now.
This is a dumb line. They don't want to have to look at some random guy in their picture, even though he wouldn't have been in any of the posed pictures at all, maybe just in the background of crowd shots. There have been no conflicts between them and my boyfriend, and he's a nice, mild-mannered gent who gets along with everyone, so I don't think it was about him personally. I get to the ceremony and find out that literally everyone else has a plus one, not just married couples, but there are couples there who have been dating for less time than me. This is when I started feeling surly.
I smiled and played my part during the ceremony, but inside I was very surly and angry.
But I think this is good that she played her part. She was like, I'm going to make this a thing after the wedding. I'll let you do whatever you need to do at your wedding, but this is going to hurt my feelings.
Oh, for sure.
I'm surly. By the way, this comes from Particular Visual 14. And if you want to submit your own stories, go to the r slash OK Storytime subreddit. I'm Sophia.
I'm Rainy Toll. I'm Riley.
And Rainy, can you tell us a little bit about who you are, what you do?
Yes, I am Rainy. I started my career in public radio and then I switched into Try Guys, which was I was at the Try Guys for five years in their podcast department. And now I'm freelance, just out and about, bopping around Los Angeles, sort of doing some sketch, doing some comedy, making some projects that are coming out soon.
Just making it happen.
Just doing it all.
I'm trying. We were just talking about how it's just being your own boss. I'm just not really a good employee or boss to myself.
I need a second part. You've got to be harder on yourself.
I've got to be harder on myself. I need a KPI sync. I need some check-ins. Some check-ins.
Yes, those are my words right here.
Oh, yeah.
You're like, I need a check-in.
We need some KPIs around here.
But Rainey has kindly joined us to give some advice on our stories. Thank you so much for joining us.
Oh my gosh, I'm so excited. I love the Reddit tea. Reddit is sort of, it's sort of a spicy little place that I'm on. I'm on a lot of the YouTube Reddit threads. Like, I don't even really watch Mythical and I'm like, what's going on at mythical they changed presidents like what's.
Going on the reddit thread i haven't seen any of their episodes um but i hope it continues we then got to the reception which had way more people than the ceremony this is where all the more distant friends were invited and everyone there had a plus one i was literally placed at a table as the one single person and everyone else at the table was a couple some people at the table were other members of the wedding party but others were random distant acquaintances. People started asking me where my boyfriend was and I said I was told he wasn't invited. They asked why and I said I had no idea why. This is when I started letting my surliness show.
Oh no.
Wait till after. And started acting rude and mean because I was humiliated and then I was brought into conversation with the couple's male friend.
Dean.
I was previously told that Dean had a crush on me.
What? Stop it.
Okay, well now I think that Dean is the problem here.
What? They planned this so she could get with Dean.
Yeah, this is big news.
Big being Dean.
Being Dean.
And they have no regard for her relationship.
No, they don't care.
And so Dean is also a single person at the wedding then.
So far as, yeah, we don't know.
My next question is, are they related?
Oh, I actually don't know. We don't know how they're, hopefully not.
Is it incest?
You're wondering about incest alert?
Yeah, we'll find out all those questions. And I made it clear I wouldn't be interested even if I were single. Even after that, he kept trying to message me and I ignored him. But now the people who brought me into conversation with Dean were standing around staring at us and giggling behind their hands, like they thought they were Cupid matchmakers. Dean was absolutely our participant in this, and I was meaner to Dean than I've ever been to anyone in my entire life.
Chill, Opie.
She is surly. She's full surly. I was as fully rude as I've ever wanted to be when... being the target of someone's romantic interest unwontedly. It's true, I don't really know if I was being set up, but I was already furious before that happened. Everyone was silent and awkward. I went back and finished my meal, and as soon as I was done, picked up my purse, left, and went straight to my boyfriend's house, skipping most of the reception, cake cutting, speeches, and everything.
I feel like she's making this about her now. I get that she's in a bad situation. I don't know. I mean, I guess you're either going to be there in a bad vibe, or you're not going to go, but I'm like.
I feel like if I went and I found out that everyone else was allowed to bring their partner and also maybe I was being set up with this guy I didn't like, I would just leave.
I wouldn't say anything to anyone. Actually, I get that because there's a piece of it where it's like, I don't want to be fending off this weird person.
Yeah, the whole night.
The whole person.
Yeah.
No.
The whole person.
I'm standing on this. I'm being even ruder.
I'm making a scene.
You told me I could bring the love of my life with me and now you talk to Big Bean Dean?
Well, now you have to marry this, your boyfriend. Just to spite them.
Oh, that's a good point.
I think that's to go all the way.
That's the next step.
Yeah.
I'm now being told by the couple that they're hurt and confused why I left so early. I haven't replied. And we do have an update about texting the bride and groom. So I think there's going to be another conversation. But what do you think so far? Was it a pee in the right? How would you have handled this?
I think.
Oh, it's so hard because it's a wedding where it's just like, I think that I would go to, I don't know who you go to is the issue because it sort of seems like it's a group thing. I would go to the bride and groom, but they're busy. But I would like to know, I'm like, hey, like what's going on? Like, what are you guys talking about?
Yeah.
Why? Why are we talking about Dean and me?
Yeah.
I'm dating someone.
Yeah. I think, I think that the Dean crossed a line.
Yes.
I think I was sort of on the wedding's side before because it's like, okay, well sometimes they.
Don't owe you.
Yeah. Uh, partner I don't know though I think maybe I am on OP's side all the way I just feel like I think what I'm concerned about is like clearly they are not telling her something for some she's in the dark yeah so that makes me kind of be like why do they not trust.
Her which is so weird to me because she's part of the wedding like she's a wet like a wedding party participant and they have fully you know clued her not clued her.
In I know which is weird I think that it's also just like them playing cupid is super weird given like it's like oh if my friend is in a relationship i'm not like that even if i don't like the person yeah okay i just imagine they hate this yeah partner so much that it's like i don't want you in the wedding because he you suck and also actually what if like you hooked up with somebody else what if we sabotaged entirely yeah have you thought about that I think there's just not enough open communication.
Yeah.
And it's sort of urgent at this point.
But maybe the text conversation changes that. And we're going to find out in this update.
Okay, okay. How old is OP?
We don't know, ages.
I think that she is in college. And she's with a college boyfriend. And the parents are like, we don't think this is the best fit.
Yeah.
That's a theory.
We also don't fully know. In the original text, the bride and groom are not referred to as friend, family, or anything.
Right.
So we don't really know Opie's relationship.
It could be it could be like her mom and somebody else.
Oh, OK.
But we got an update after making this post. I emailed them back and I started small just to see what they would say. All I said to start it off was I was uncomfortable because I was the only one without a plus one after being told nobody but engaged or married couples would have them. Multiple people at the reception started repeatedly asking me where boyfriend was, and I was getting more and more humiliated, especially since I was seated with colleague and other colleague and their Tinder boyfriend.
It was humiliating to be the only one singled out, and I was extremely upset. Here's the reply I got. We just meant no plus ones for the ceremony. It was perfectly fine for you to bring boyfriend to the reception. And that's what we assumed you were going to do. That's what we always planned for. The reception being much larger and looser. We never heard from you about bringing boyfriend to the reception, so we didn't plan for it.
But it always would have been fine. And OP says this reply is some BS that was never, ever, ever said to me at all or presented as an option. I mean... If I get an invite that doesn't say anything about plus one, I'm not bringing them to anything.
Right.
That's crazy.
That's insane. Also, so, okay, so the Tinder dates were at the reception.
Yeah.
Yeah. They omitted critical information.
Yeah.
I think on purpose.
Yeah.
I would actually have been fine with that as a compromise. And we have a second update about Dean. And I think that we're about to find out what Opie said to Dean.
Yeah. Because she was like, I was meanest in my entire life. I was like, uh-oh.
What did she say?
That could mean anything. Because some people are like, you know, they're like so like dainty and polite. And some people are like kind of like mean often.
Yeah. So people are like, I was so mean.
And they're like, you suck. I like, yeah, like, looked at them a little weird. And then some people are like, let's see. I'm very curious how hard she's gonna go.
I don't know.
I don't know. What's your level of mean?
Oh, that's a great question. I used to be, like, incredibly confrontational. Like, in high school, I was just like, confrontation is my lifeblood. I love it. Like, I'll just, like, if I have an issue, yeah, like, we're talking about it. And then I sort of, like, went to therapy, and I was like, And my therapist was sort of like, yeah, there's other ways to deal with like, and I'm like, Oh my gosh, this is a huge life hack. This is I love this. I'm like obsessed with it. Then I went way too far in the direction of like, no confrontation ever because it's like, it's just not worth it.
Like what getting angry doesn't do anything. But now I'm trying.
To get back into it a little bit.
Exactly.
I'm dabbling.
I actually got a little mad at my friend that I'm working on a group project with two days ago. And you know what I'll say? Yesterday, he turned it around.
No way.
Okay. It was a happy ending.
And I was like, oh, anger does something. Anger can be helpful.
I think you just have to aim it.
Yeah.
And you have to temper it.
You have to be really clear on what. This is the thing. It's like you have to be.
I got a quote my mom told me recently. Unspoken expectations create resentment.
Yes.
Yeah, you have to tell people why you're upset. You can't expect them to read your mind. Update two. I didn't want to describe the conversation because people would probably think really badly of me if they saw how horrible I really acted.
But F it.
This was toward the end of the meal and some people are still eating and some people are just partying, standing and talking, circulating around the room. I was eating and someone comes over to me and goes, hey, could you come over here for a second? Someone has a question for you. That feels so high school.
Oh, yeah.
Hey, could you come over here?
Somebody has a question. My friend wants to talk to you.
Yeah, my friend wants to talk to you.
And it's like, okay, then talk to me.
Yeah.
Like, what are you talking about? My friend thinks you're cute.
Yeah.
Already I was suspicious because that was a scenario straight out of the second grade lunchroom. But fine. Whatever. Maybe it has to do with the bridal party. So I come over. And who's standing there? But Dean. Looking real smug. And a few other people are standing there who are already giggling. So I start feeling real angry. Because again, this is reminding me of a second grade lunchroom scenario.
And I'm already imagining how it's going to go. He actually started out with, hey, beautiful. No.
Yeah.
That's too much. That's too much. That's too much even if this person doesn't have a boyfriend.
Yeah.
It's just like you got to read the room a little bit higher and see what the interest level is, not just like going so hot.
Yeah.
It's so intense.
It went from, it went from, he sends a lackey over. Yeah. Oh, so Dina has something she wants to say to you. And Opie goes over and he goes, Hey, beautiful.
It literally feels like it's like seventh grade and his brother told him what to say.
Yeah.
And he's like, well, I don't even like you anyway.
Yeah. Yeah.
I think he sensed that this wasn't going to go like what he had in his mind, but he continued what he obviously planned out. So he said, I just wanted to ask you something. And I said, what? He went, there's something wrong with my phone. Can you help me fix it?
I already know where this is going.
I already know where this is going. Oh, no. I said, I don't know anything about phones. Sorry, I can't help you. And turned around and go back.
No, no, no.
What's wrong with my phone is that it doesn't have your number in it.
This is cringe gore.
It is. It is. I don't even want to read this.
Okay, I have used similar pickup lines like this before. No, you haven't.
Have you actually?
Oh, yeah.
What?
Not recently. No, no, no.
Oh, my gosh. I've never had anybody be that intense with it.
I've had someone be very cringy with me before.
Really?
Yeah.
What did they say? No, they just like growled and it made me very uncomfortable.
Oh, no.
It made me so uncomfortable.
Was it somebody you knew or like a cat caller?
Yeah.
No, no, no. This is somebody I knew. Do I know them? What?
Do I know them?
Yeah. I'm not telling you.
You have to tell me later.
Later, later, later.
I'll tell you. Wait, just mouth it to me. And then I'm going to get the reaction.
I bet you could. You can't say it online, but I bet you know. Like, I bet you could figure it out. I'll just let you say it.
God, I want to know. Anyways, I have done this to someone.
Yeah.
And they had a boyfriend.
Oh, no.
And I still got the number.
Oh.
What did you say? That's insane. You did, like, the phone thing?
Yeah.
Yeah, I did the phone thing where I was like, hey, hey, hey. And then she was like, I have a boyfriend. I'm like, we can still be friends.
And were you?
Yeah, it didn't work out, but I still got a number.
That's crazy.
That is impressive. I'm impressed by that.
Thank you.
So it works sometimes. Not with Opie, though. And I just went off. I had already made it clear I was not into whatever this was. And I turned to leave. But he interrupted me leaving and kept going despite it all. I was very furious because I was already angry. Plus, he wasn't paying attention to how I felt or caring about it. So I felt like he deserved what I was going to give him. There's a little bit left to the story.
This is so crazy. Wait, so she's... We're at the point where he has.
We're reenacting.
He has.
Yeah.
He's done his crime. Yes. And she's about to wreak havoc on him.
Yes.
That's where we're at. I feel, okay, level of crime, I think it's bad. And he does not have any, speaking of social decorum, no social decorum on this. But I don't think it... I just feel a little bad because I'm like, depending on how old they are, I'm like, maybe he's like really nervous.
I don't know.
It's a vulnerable place to be saying, hey, beautiful.
Yeah.
In a way.
He's got a little fedora. Hey, beautiful. Hey, princess. Hey, princess.
Oh, my gosh.
That is Dean's vibe.
Someone does. And not his friends who are egging him on.
This is something interesting.
Okay.
I feel Dean is cringe.
Yes.
And her friends are like, you should be with Dean.
So how is.
Her vibe is similar to Dean's.
Oh, no.
That's so much worse.
Yeah.
When your friends try to set you up with, like, someone who you think is entirely unattractive.
Yeah.
Yeah. Like, just annoying.
Yeah.
It's like, wait, you thought we would be a good match? That's interesting.
But we're going to get back.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
Where even are we? Okay, yeah.
We still have Dean.
Oh, my gosh.
What's going on? I raised my voice and said, Dean, no. F off and leave me alone. No, you can't have my effing number. No, I don't want to go out with you. I don't want to talk to you. I'm not attracted to you. I don't want anything to do with you. You're not interesting or attractive to me at all. I want you to leave me the F alone.
Okay.
He was looking down during all of this and not at me. And I said, I want you to look at me and you're going to leave me alone from now on. Yes or no. And he said, yes.
Look at me.
So he said, yes. So I turned around and left him alone after that.
Oh my gosh, what? That's crazy.
Wow.
Well, there's a little bit. I know I humiliated him and I did it on purpose. I hate to admit it, but it's true. Even though I raised my voice, it was loud in the room. So only the people standing nearby and one unrelated table nearby heard it.
An unrelated table just being like, what is going on? Look at me.
Look at me. Look at me. That's really intense.
That's insane. Wow.
Step by step on how to get a guy to leave you alone. Yeah.
Yeah.
Look at me.
Yes or no.
Guys are afraid to make eye contact with men.
Yeah, clearly.
That's why I only stare at their foreheads.
That's what in theater they told you to do when you're having a romantic moment. To look at their forehead so you don't get nervous. In middle school, specifically.
Oh, okay. I was like, wow. Yeah, no, no, no.
In my middle school theater, that's what they said.
That makes sense. I never had to do any romantic scenes in middle school.
I didn't either. But this was for someone else.
I heard about it. But that's the end of that story. We got another one coming up.
Oh my gosh.
We started out intensely.
Poor Dean or not poor Dean? Do we feel bad for Dean?
I feel a little bit bad for Dean.
I feel a little bit bad, but on the other hand, I kind of do love a woman yelling at a man. There's something really nice about that. Dean had a lack of curiosity. And she was like, don't assume that I'm interested. And I think that's fair.
And I agree. And I think he went up a little too strong. He probably knew that OP had a boyfriend.
Yeah.
Because she said that she knew prior that he had a crush on her. Yeah. And so despite all that, still has the audacity to go up to her.
Yeah.
And then when she's like, not interested.
Yeah.
He's like, push, push. And then he said, and she just went off.
Yeah.
And I think he's not going to make that mistake again.
No. And I don't think he's ever going to talk to anyone ever again.
I think he's done. Yeah, I did yell at somebody in front of all of his friends once.
Oh, wow.
Because I heard that he essentially stopped talking to me.
Yeah.
We were friends. We sat next to each other and laughed. And then he stopped talking to me.
We went on.
This school trip.
Yeah.
And then I was like... I heard that the reason you stopped talking to me was because he thought I had a crush on him and he wasn't interested and so I was humiliated. And so then I went up to him in front of all his friends and was like, just so you know, I heard you stopped talking to me because you thought I have a crush on you and I don't.
So good. I mean, you deserve that.
I mean, I think it was crazy. No, I don't think.
That's that crazy.
Thank you.
I think you still have business. I mean, but also maybe I'm primed after reading what it would be.
Yeah.
I'm like, anything is not that crazy.
It's not that crazy after like, you're not interesting.
Or attractive to me. Yeah, look at me. Look at me.
I think the not interesting and attractive is maybe the most scary part.
And she said it twice. She said, look at me and you're not interesting. You're not attractive. I'm going to say it again. You're not attractive.
Yeah. So I think that that's going to be something that he will never forget. He's not going to forget that.
No.
I would never.
Yeah.
And then she leaves the party.
She's just like, I just.
Which I get now. I get that more now because I'm like, yeah.
You can't stay after that. Yeah. You gotta go.
I think you gotta take a breath.
Yeah.
You gotta go home and take a breath.
You gotta take a breather after that.
Yeah.
But we've got another story. My boyfriend is giving me the ick over something stupid and I can't get over it.
Ick is complicated. Because I feel like ick can go one or two ways. We're going to find out which way. Yeah, let's find out. Let's find out. Woo boy!
So I've, 31 female, always been the kind of person who... thought the idea of giving me the ick was a bit silly, but potentially a good measure of genuine interest in someone. For example, watching another man hit a curb kind of gave me the ick, but being in the car when my boyfriend, 33 male, hits a curb is funny and cute.
No ick.
Okay, yeah.
Sure.
Yeah. And this comes from throwawaykbb0207. Until recently, you started an account on Instagram to post artistic pictures and stuff.
Okay.
Oh, that's great.
Cool.
Okay.
Go express your creativity, baby. He's actually a pretty talented watercolor painter and sculptor, and I actively encourage him to pursue his art hobby. But this account isn't for that. He just posts AI-generated images with weird captions. Like, not even cute or funny videos or memes or whatever, just images of a tree made of butterflies or a whale wearing scuba gear. He bought a monthly subscription to some AI generator, and he'll spend a couple of minutes writing one-sentence prompts to generate dozens of images and then post a couple images as a reel with a random song over it.
Why?
Okay, there's only one way I'm okay with this. And if it's about Toon Toon Toon Toon Toon Sahur and it's pretty engaging, then I'm cool with it.
What?
What is that?
What did you say?
Time out, time out. You don't know about Italian brain rot?
Oh, Italian brain rot. I've heard of it.
You don't know about this?
Yeah, you got like all this different like Italian brain rot. You got ballerina cappuccino Toon Toon Toon Toon Sahur.
I don't know their names, but they're like random names.
What do you like about it? They're just funny and fun?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're like just awesome.
They're just awesome.
Bunch of different brain runs.
So only if he's doing that.
But I feel like not because it's like a tree with a thing.
Yeah, he said like a whale with scuba gear.
Yeah, I'm so confused because if he does have watercolor, why on earth.
Would he not be? That's what I was wondering.
Yeah.
I don't know. Opie says, now I thought this was a little dumb, but whatever keeps you entertained, I'm not gonna yuck your yum. Yeah, sure, I guess.
I mean, I don't know, using AI.
But he acts like generating the images is a special skill or accomplishment.
That would give me the ick. And it's not really the ick, it's just sort of like, I think you, I might not like you.
Yeah, I think there's something wrong. Especially when you're an artist. I don't like that.
Yeah.
A couple of weeks ago when we were just hanging out, he kept scrolling through images he'd created to show me and tell me about how interesting prompt writing is and look at all the crazy things he's creating. This is when I started to get a little icked out because yeah, sure, it's kind of cool, but you're not really creating anything.
You're paying for an image generator. someone else created to make something based off a sentence you type in. I thought he'd be using the images as reference for his actual amazing art he does, but no. He posts them to an Instagram account with like 50 followers. Like, he's a big influencer.
That's... That's 50 people. He's a micro-influencer.
He's a micro-micro-influencer.
Okay, you can make some real money off of this.
He's working on it.
I feel sad for him because I feel like he is somehow trying to protect himself from being vulnerable with his real art.
Yeah.
He's like, oh, I want to do this. Like, maybe he's testing the... I just don't understand why, really, what... Where's the why here?
I don't know. I think a lot of people... I know especially I mean older people I think have just loved using AI they're.
Like oh look what I can do yeah they'll post a picture of like them and their grandkids and be like look this is us and it's like that's not you.
Yeah they're like on a horse or something and.
They're like I don't follow someone because I kept putting that stuff on Instagram I'm like This is really annoying. Yeah, stop.
Yeah, I mean, my whole thing with AI art is it's like we've really lost the plot. Like, have you heard about people using AI to write their wedding vows?
We read a story. We read a story on here about a guy who's like, I didn't know what to say, so I used AI to write my wedding vows, and then my girlfriend, like, left me at the altar. Yeah.
Because it literally is like, what's your point of life?
Yeah.
Like literally it's like. You can't even write about how you love someone? That's love for somebody that you like. It's like your life partner.
Yeah.
And you can't even write. Like that to me is like the best part of life is writing the vows.
Yeah.
For somebody that you love.
Kind of sad that this guy is lost. You know, the desire to make art.
Yeah, exactly.
And it's also like art is about, I was actually just really looking into the Mona Lisa.
Yeah.
Really good painting. It actually is really, you guys should stare at it for like a while. Because I didn't really care about it for a little, like for a while. But anyways.
Yeah.
I was just thinking about it. It was just like, oh, like I'm like, you know, connecting with. Leonardo da Vinci, shout out. He made this thing, and it's invoking so many emotions. And if AI had made it, it's like, well, AI doesn't know these emotions.
So I don't.
There's nothing for me to trust here. Or, yeah, there's no connection. So I'm just like, it's so weird. Yeah, I don't know. I don't like it.
I don't either.
Let's see what OP does. Yeah. The captions will always be something like, we're so thankful and overwhelmed for all your support so we can keep doing what we do.
But like, who is we?
What support?
What are you doing?
I've seen some people use AI generation as a tool in genuinely cool creative projects, like they'll come up with an amazing concept and storyline and characters and world building, and then use AI to help with voiceover and background images. But his whole account is just images that took basically no thought and no effort to make. And I'll always say things like, Oh, got a post today. And I don't know. I know it's so dumb and insignificant, but it just gives me the biggest ick. I love him and we're so aligned in so many ways. And I guess I'm just hoping that venting here will get it out of my system. Maybe someone can tell me it's dumb and I'm not being crazy and I can't stop thinking about it and move on. I don't know. I
just really want to hear what other people have to say. Am I being overdramatic? Is there a way I could or should approach this? And what do you think? Because that's the end of the story.
Did they say how long they've been together?
No, they didn't. Here, let me check.
I thought maybe that was just the other story.
Because I'm thinking if it's six months, I think that like investigate. I would say ask him more questions about politics.
Yeah, see where he stands in other areas.
Because I'm wondering if like.
He's also 31. He's 31.
No, he's 33, sorry.
He's 33.
Yeah.
It's even worse. Why is he doing that?
How is he? His frontal lobe is really hooked.
So I got an update.
Yeah.
Oh.
Or not like an update, update. But here it says, to answer your questions, we've been together for two years. This has been a recent development.
So I've really.
Two years is kind of a long time.
She hasn't brought it up yet. We've had a couple of conversations early on. where he just discovered, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, yeah, two years, two years.
I think you could tell him. I can't imagine this is like, yeah, I would say, yeah, I think telling him and being like, gauging his reaction.
Yeah, being like, hey, I feel like you haven't been doing your own art.
Yeah.
Like, is there something wrong there? Do you feel like stuck? Do you feel more pressure to do that?
I think that's a good way to approach it because I was like, how would you, would you be like, if you didn't bring up the own art, it would be like, what's up with this Instagram?
I don't like it.
Like, that's a hard, it's like, I don't get this.
Your Instagram's unattractive.
It's unattractive.
Do you hear me? Yes or no? Look at me.
Look at me.
Look at me.
Yeah, I mean, I'm like personally really not a fan of AI. Neither am I. Yeah, so it's just like a hard, it really is, because to me it's so tied to political beliefs.
And it seems like OP doesn't have that same, like she's not as opposed to it.
But is more so focused on kind of like the.
Art of it. Yeah, she's like, this art sucks.
This art sucks. And you're acting like this is a job. That would annoy me. I'm acting like this is a job, but actually it's taking me 25 seconds.
Yeah, and you're not doing any work. Yeah. I think she's going from that route, in which case I feel like she could bring up, hey, you can totally do whatever you want on your own time.
Yeah.
But.
You're kind of annoying me.
Yeah.
It's just, yeah, it depends on how he takes it because I think it is sort of like, because I'm assuming if you're like, okay, well, I've noticed you're not doing like your own art. You're not posting your own art. Like what's going on? And he's probably has an answer like, oh yeah, this is like, this is what I want to do or whatever. And then it's like, do you broach the topic of like, this is loser behavior?
Yeah.
And how would you even go about that?
Yeah.
This is sort of like, maybe, would you say like, I just don't want to hear about it?
Ooh.
Because it seems like he really cares about this. Yeah, that's the tricky thing. That is a tricky thing.
I don't know.
I don't know how I would. I don't know. I don't know how I would approach it if I just wanted to stop here. Like, if I wanted to stop talking about it.
Yeah.
Because I feel like there's always something that your partner.
My mom has these conversations with my dad.
Oh, really?
Where my dad, he kind of goes down this loophole of like, oh, the government, this, that. Mom's like, hey, you keep talking about it. Either find someone else to talk about it or just don't talk to me about it because it brings this weird vibe to our house.
And it works out for them. They're married. They've been married for like 26 years. So, yeah, I don't know. Yeah.
Yeah. So yeah. You can say, you know, it can be like, Hey, I don't like this. If you could, you can like, yeah.
You don't have to make it like a values thing or whatever. Just like, I don't, this is not for me.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think that's good.
Yeah.
I think that works. Yeah. And they've been together for two years.
If, We'll see. I mean, if they can't make it through this, then.
Yeah, they're done.
Yeah.
Dunzos.
Yeah. Yeah.
Hey, it's Smiley Riley here from OK Storytime. We're going to get back to these stories, but here's three minutes worth of ads from our sponsors.
My mother-in-law wanted to play an AI-generated song at our wedding, and I refused.
Oh, yeah.
I think that is fair. You're allowed to be like, no, I don't actually want that.
My 27 female DJ reached out to me four days before my wedding and said my soon-to-be mother-in-law, 50 female, asked if she could play a surprise song that she had made for the groom. She's obsessed with Chachuiti and I couldn't be more anti-AI.
No.
I knew it was going to be AI slop. I asked the DJ to send me the song, and yeah, it was AI, hyper-specific about my fiance, 27 male, and his family dynamics, and mentions both of us by name multiple times, which really takes me out of the moment mentally. It's five minutes long, and the second half of it gives boy mom, who is giving up her baby energy.
No.
I asked if she would be- Wait, no, go back, go back. Oh, you know, you know. I asked if she would be willing to play the song for him before the ceremony while he gets ready. or even at our rehearsal dinner. The song truly reads like she wrote him a letter or toast and had chat make it into a song. In my opinion, it's not appropriate for our 195 person wedding reception. Dang, got a big wedding reception.
She responded, it's okay, I'll do it another time. Followed with a text that she- hasn't felt included except for signing checks. Oh, she's pulling the money card. That is, that's why they do it. That's why a lot of these Reddit mothers and mother-in-laws and in-laws in general will sign those checks. They want to be able to.
Play their AI song.
Yeah.
Have you seen the AI? There's like TikToks of text messages that are turned into a song.
By AI I think they are.
Yeah so this is what it reminds me of where it's just like you can just like yeah insert some sentences and then it's just like Vienna by Billy Joel is that wait what well it's by AI oh my gosh it's one of my favorite songs no.
It's a great song but he took his dad's like letter to him and then made it into a song really It's just like a letter from his dad.
That's so sweet.
I know.
Oh my gosh, that song really does make me cry.
I love that song.
Yeah.
It's so good.
It's just like that.
It's just like that, except using AI. Except, yeah.
So much worse.
Yeah.
Mind you, I took her dress shopping with me, brought her along to tour the venue with me, and all three of her other kids have a role in her wedding, despite my fiance and I having a total of eight siblings between us that we're trying to include. By the way, this comes from TrickyAd4898, and if you want to spend your stories go to the r slash okay story time subreddit one of her kids is an 18 year old female so she will get the chance to be mother of the bride one day and be fully included to the extent that she feels entitled to i guess she gets to be in the processional the family wedding pics and have a whole mother son dance at our wedding so i'm not sure what more she was expecting from
us i offered against my better judgment to let her play the song during their mother's son dance Ooh.
I wouldn't have done that.
That's almost, what was her original?
Like, they walked down the aisle?
Yeah. Or maybe it was just one of the songs that was played and you could kind of ignore it.
Yeah.
Like, because now it's just putting a spotlight on it. Like, it's like, oh, this is weird. Like, I mean, I don't know. If you're dancing at a wedding and some AI song comes on, what do you do with that?
Because his name is Jake and they're like, Oh, Jake, I'm your mom.
I love you.
But it's five minutes.
Yeah, I don't know.
I would leave.
Yeah, I'm feeling like the husband is going to get mad at her now. Yeah.
Oh, surprise. I was going to have the DJ fade it out after two minutes, but get this. She doesn't want to play her special surprise song during the mother-son dance. She doesn't want it to take the place of the song my fiance picked for them because she thinks he's stressed over the song. and is sentimentally attached to it, but that's not the case. Additional context, my fiance has a stepmom and will be doing a mother-son with her as well. So my mother-in-law thought it would be appropriate for him to do two mother dances and then still play an additional five minute long song that is poorly written by a robot. She hasn't spoken to me since I told her no.
Also, it's by Chad Chibouti, not a robot. It has feelings. Yeah, it's got a name. It's almost a thing, too. It's almost sentient, too.
Yeah, Opie should recognize that. The wedding is three days away, and we've always had a good relationship until this. Am I the a-hole?
Okay, here's my question. How much of the wedding is she paying for?
She just said that she's written checks. We don't know how much for her.
So that's where I'm going to be thinking. Okay, she paid for 50% of this?
Yeah, where's your line?
Where's your line?
If she paid for the whole thing, girl, yes, down. But if she paid for like 50%, it's like, can we make the song better and maybe shorter?
Yeah, maybe we call her producer.
Maybe we call a producer. Yeah. Maybe we sort of get a professional in there. Yeah. Maybe be like, oh, I love this idea.
It's got bones. You know.
It's got bones.
It's workshop.
Oh, man. It's got bones is such a funny note because it's like you hate it.
Really?
That's what whenever my sketch group and I think like we don't really like a sketch, we go, it's got bones.
Yeah.
It's like there's something there.
Yeah.
People tell me that all the time in my jokes.
Yeah.
I'm doing stand-up comedy.
Well, it's like we don't like the joke, but like it does have bones.
It does have potential there.
Yeah.
Is this a universal thing?
Yeah, yeah.
It's got, well, but it has bones. So, like, it's not, like, bad.
It's not horrible.
Yeah, yeah.
It's not the worst, but, like, there's room for improvement.
Yes, yes. Unfortunately. That's what it means.
And, hey, people have said it to me, too.
People say it to me all the time.
People say it to me all the time.
I say it to some people, too, but I actually mean, like, oh, this is great. Like, I like this.
Oh, you should be saying that.
Oh, you've been unintentionally insulting them.
You've been insulting them.
No wonder they never do it again.
Yeah, they're like, wow.
Okay.
I mean, I think the energy probably, I feel like if you gave it your all, like, oh, wow, this is bones. Like, if you're really, like, into it, I think it could mean the other thing.
Yeah, I thought it made, like, great starting point.
Well, yeah, it kind of does.
But it's a backhanded compliment.
No. It's not even, it's like a, um.
It's like a better way to say it.
There's no nervous system or muscles on this, just bones.
Yeah. It's got a structure, but we need to fill it out.
Yeah, there's something here.
We're not at a point to apply skin yet, but we're getting there.
There's no skin here.
There's no skin here. But yeah, yeah. I think it could go either. It depends on how you say it, but I feel like somebody, if it's an insult, it's, okay, this has bones. I think what you should do is, that is the insult version. If it's like, oh yeah, this has bones.
Okay, I've said that literal line though.
Yeah. Oh my gosh.
And you've actually made a lot of enemies. we have a comment though not the ale so let me get this straight it's a five minute song just about her son not about you both or about this new chapter in your life and op says the song is mostly about my fiance but yeah it does talk about this new chapter and her letting go of him so he can be my man now instead of hers weird undertones terrible writing and wording just not the vibe i wanted my ceremony i want to get the formalities done asap so we can party that's awesome The song is so embarrassing to even listen to. And more comments from OP.
We are paying the DJ. She covered catering, but that's it. So I don't feel too bad about being controlling here.
Oh, catering?
I mean, catering can be pretty expensive for a 200-person wedding.
It's anywhere from $ 2, 500 to $ 5, 000, where I'm thinking this wedding's probably around $ 30, 000 to $ 35, 000 to $ 40, 000.
Whoa, do you know that off the dome? Yeah, you're looking at, yeah.
Okay.
Oh, yeah, yeah, dude.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
We're all the time talking about weddings and stuff.
It's like.
Oh, from Reddit.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
From, yeah. There was somebody who said in the chat, tell her that that's how everybody in the room is going to feel. Like, essentially, like, the way she is feeling, everybody is going to be like, this is uncomfortable. And so, in a way, she is sort of saving... her from her own embarrassment.
Yeah.
So you, you say, Hey, it's a little bit too intimate for everyone.
Yeah.
This is more of like, I feel like it would be better in a personal setting where it's like, Oh, you can really listen to the words.
Put your bones inside.
Put your bones inside.
Um, Obie says my DJ has been great about it. He's made it very clear that he works for me and will not play anything without my consent. And that is the end of that story. So, OP's in the clear as long as she's okay with making her mom.
It's just, but if her mom is making a stink at the wedding.
Yeah.
Her mother-in-law, it's going to just like.
Permeate. That stinks every, it's so stinky.
Yeah.
In that wedding.
Yeah.
I don't know if it's worth it. Would you rather have a mother-in-law be in a bad mood the whole wedding or have an AI song for five minutes?
Hmm.
Bad options.
Those are terrible.
Those are really bad options.
Because people are going to walk away talking about.
The AI song. People won't walk away with.
The mother-in-law being in a bad mood. That's just you. Right.
Like they might say, oh yeah, the mother-in-law was kind of in a bad mood. But they will remember forever. Oh my God, I was at this wedding and they played a terrible AI song.
This is what I would do.
Yeah.
Hey everyone, mother-in-law made this song for just for her son we're gonna play it yeah by the way she made this in her free time This is her idea. We're honoring her.
Yeah, I think that's smart. Because I think the song, I was just thinking even without that, I think the song will be pretty clear from the mother.
Yeah.
The boy mom of it all is very uncomfortable.
Yeah, I would just say, sorry, thanks for paying for the food.
Yeah. You have full control over the food.
Yeah, yeah.
Maybe.
You can do whatever you want from the food, maybe. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so there's no update. We don't even know what happened.
No.
That's it.
We don't even know. Yeah, maybe they played it. We don't know. We don't even know when the wedding was happening. Oh, my gosh.
Oh, this was 27 days ago.
Oh, wow.
Oh, my gosh.
So they might not have. Well, they said the wedding was in like three days.
It's come down to the wire.
Well, yeah, so they probably already had it.
I assume.
No, everything we have is in here. No updates.
Oh, I'm assuming she didn't play it. My boyfriend abandoned me at the airport, so I broke up with him.
Period.
I think that's fine.
Yeah.
I'll do that.
Sure.
I'm always team breakup. I, 28 female, have been in a long distance relationship for about five months with Eric, male 28. He lives in a town that either takes 12 hours to drive to, seven hours by train, or an hour flight. Valentine's Day was coming up, so I bought a flight to go see him so we could spend a week together and celebrate. When I got up in the morning, I started sending him snaps of me getting to the airport and about being excited to see him.
When I got to the airport, I messaged him that I would see him in a bit, but there was no reply. This is when my gut feelings started telling me something was off, but I pushed it away, hoping that I was just overreacting. When I landed, I messaged him that I would see him soon. But no reply. I was still hoping so hard. When the arrivals door opened, I was so hopeful that he would be there. But in the end, I was heartbroken to see he wasn't.
I felt so undervalued and embarrassed because I started crying in a corner of the airport. I had only come to the city to see him and I was going to stay with him. So what was I going to do? I called him over and over to no reply. That's terrible. Oh, I've been picked up, of course, at the airport by my boyfriend. And this was terrible.
This is like, he knew she was coming, right? Yeah, fully knew. Like, because that's the only thing I'm like, did she surprise him?
Yeah.
Because like, what are you talking about? You're not picking up.
Yeah.
Somebody's visiting. It doesn't even matter if it's a boyfriend. If somebody's visiting me, I'm like checking in on their flight. I'm like, what's your flight number? Like, what time are you coming in?
Okay, it's delayed.
Okay, I'll be there.
Like.
Yeah, I'll let them know.
What are you talking about? Very worst, worst case, be like, hey, I'm so sorry I have this thing, but like, here's my address. Yeah, I'll pay for an Uber, like, whatever.
Yeah, this is unacceptable.
That's insane.
By the way, this comes from OKPirate4219, and if you want to submit your own story, go to the r slash OK story, I'm subreddit. I ended up at a pub drinking tea, and after about an hour there, he messaged me, not called, but sent me a dang message. His excuse was that he had fallen asleep and that he was sorry. I honestly felt so betrayed because how can I not be worth setting a dang alarm? In the end, I ended up staying with him because I couldn't afford a hotel or to change my flight. And that's when I found out that he was staying up at night playing video games. When I got home, I decided that I couldn't be with someone who undervalued me so much and broke up with him. At the time, he agreed, but now he sent me a love letter
declaring his love and that he's sorry for everything and doesn't want to lose me. I feel like I'm overthinking things and just need some advice. Did I overreact to him not picking me up at the airport? Am I the a-hole for breaking up with my boyfriend because he forgot me at the airport? And edit to clarify, we made these plans together two months before I left. He was well aware of when and where I was arriving.
and he was the one who offered to come get me. Secondly, I posted here about this now because I just received the love letter today and how they met. He's originally from my city, so he comes here often to see his family. We met online and spent a couple weeks dating before he went off to university, so mostly long distance, I guess. Commenter says, does he have a visit coming up?
Because it sounds like he's waited almost seven months since you broke up with him to try to get you back. I wouldn't be surprised if he's just trying to reactivate your relationship for when he's visiting. OP says, yeah, he's coming home for holiday in a couple of weeks, so you have a great point there. Another commenter says, so why didn't you just take the bus over to his place instead of creating all of this drama over him oversleeping?
OP says, because as soon as I mentioned it, he said he would pick me up. This was the first time I was flying to him. I didn't think to ask for his address. Oh, after he said he would come get me. So to answer your question, I didn't know where he lived. And there is an update.
You guys don't have a location or anything?
Yeah. That's actually crazy to me.
This is insane.
So many ways.
Wait, wait, wait. So they did break up after this.
Yes.
It sounds, okay, okay. Whoa. Yeah, I'm like, do you not have, yeah, do you not have his location?
Especially because they're long distance. Yeah. I don't know. Are you a location person? I love locations. I love giving people my location. I love people giving me their locations.
I am always checking in.
Yeah.
I literally am like, oh, interesting. Aiko's not at home.
Yeah. Now, where is she? She's in West Hollywood.
I'm going to text her.
Not really.
Sometimes I text, but sometimes, and it's a really crazy old text, but usually I'm just like, interesting. I'll ask her about that.
Yeah.
I don't typically like, I'm not like a, oh, where are they? But I'm just like, you know, I'll be looking or something because I know my brother is in New York or something. And then I have like friends who are in New York. I'm like, oh my God, you guys are like right next to each other.
Oh, that's exciting. Oh, that doesn't happen to me because my friends are like really spread out.
Oh yeah.
But sometimes I will like East West Coast. Oh, you've got your pockets kind of. I will say sometimes when I text somebody and they haven't responded, I'm like, where are they? And it's like, if they're at home, there is hell to pay.
No, I'm just kidding. There's not hell to pay.
But I'm sort of like, why aren't you texting me back?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But if you're like at work, I'm like, okay, yeah, that's why you're done.
So Opie should, I think, unless they're like a, we don't share each other's loot, it's privacy. Right, right. Which is strange. But unless they're that type of people, I'm wondering why.
Why no location?
Why no address?
Also, this does sort of feel like a, that's crazy too because I'm just like such a, I'm such an anxious that I'm like, what's your house? I'm looking it up on Google Maps so I know kind of what I'm looking at.
Or like, I don't know, like sometimes my parents will be like, hey, like send us the address that you're at and the number of the person just in case we need to contact anyone.
There's a safety thing there. And yeah, so I mean, it's hard because I'm like, on the one hand, it sucks. But on the other hand, I'm like, okay, people do sometimes make mistakes. Sometimes you sleep in and like, it's like, fuck.
Would you break up over this?
I feel like if there were already tensions, I would.
In their long distance.
Yeah, in their long distance.
It's like, you don't have a lot of, yeah.
It's like, yeah, what are we doing? Like, if I'm going to visit and you're going to be asleep, like, I think we need to break up.
Like, probably.
But if I was, like, really in love with them and it was like, you just, like.
Messed up.
You did one mistake. I think I could get past it, but I'd be mad and they would have to, like, sort of be on their knees a little bit.
I think if it was my boyfriend and that happened, I'd be like, okay. Like, I'm really, my feelings are very hurt. We have a conversation. I wouldn't break up. But I think because they're long distance and it's all, you know, like, like you said, it's already tension. It's yeah.
Have you been in a long distance relationship?
No, I haven't either. No.
They've been in it for about five months. The long distance relationship.
Oh yeah, done. Oh wait, no, I thought you meant, wait, how long is the relationship?
We've been in a long distance relationship for about five months.
Were they ever in the same spot?
Total?
Yeah, like is that like their relationship total?
That's all I got on the long distance part.
Well, we don't know if their relationship extended beyond that or before that.
Yeah.
Ooh, somebody says if they're long distance, do they not send each other packages? That's a good point.
Good point. Maybe not.
You're not sending a single present?
Yeah.
I'm wondering, because she said that they met in their hometown.
Yeah.
So I'm wondering if they had any time where they were together in person or if it was all long distance. Because in that case, I'm like, yeah, it makes sense. I also want to know what he wrote in the love letter. I don't know. I just received a love letter.
I'm like, how good was it?
Was it good? Well, she's questioning.
And he was planning on coming. Yeah. Yeah.
But there's an update.
Oh my gosh.
Almost a year later. Just to be clear, the cringe is me. Hilariously dumb, but cringe all the same. I've hesitated to post this because if this gets back to him, he'll definitely know it's about him. So it's been almost a year since I, 29 female, posted my story about breaking up with my ex, 28 male. And I just want to give a quick thank you to everyone who reached out and reality checked me. Y'all are da bomb.
Now on to my update. So I took y'all's advice-ish and stuck to my resolve about being broken up. But I'm the kind of person who hates being the bad guy. So I told him we could still be friends.
I feel like you're not the bad guy if you break up with someone.
Yeah, well, I think she was like, I don't want to be mean, so we'll be friends. Oh, oh, I see, I see, I see. And he accepted. Looking back, I definitely think he was hoping for another chance. We kept hanging out every so often, and it was a good time. A couple weeks go by, and I met someone new, and I wanted to do the right thing and tell my ex in person. So after a hangout, I'm walking with him to the bus, nervous because I hate confrontation, and I'm thinking, crap, it's now or never. So I took a breath and proceeded. Me, so I wanted to tell you something because I wanted to be honest with you. Ex, looking a bit trepidatious.
Me.
I wanted to let you know that I've started seeing someone and, you know, give you a heads up. X. Silence. Now starting to rub his head and look sad. I had a nightmare last night where you told me you were dating someone and now this happens.
Whoa, that's interesting.
Prophetic. Okay. Me. Has no idea what the F to say to that. Brain blackout. I have no idea what the F came over me, but I proceeded to raise my hand and give... jazz hands and saying a kind of chalked off small voice.
You have power.
That's awesome.
That's so funny. I don't think that's cringe at all. I think that's hilarious. I think that's great.
I think that's great. And I hope he finds this. Now to this day, I still don't know why the F I did what I did. And it still cracks me up. I mean, where the heck did that come from? My friends think it's hilarious. And my mom just gave me a high five while laughing. We've got a little bit left to the story. Any final thoughts or words of wisdom for OP? I don't know.
It did make me think of when this guy was breaking up with me. And then he said, I think you're a good person, though. And he gave me finger guns. And that has really stayed with me. And I thought that was devastating. I think the powers thing is fun.
Yeah, I think that's kind of what I was thinking, too.
I was like, oh, my gosh.
Like, wait, you're spooky. You're connected. How else would you, you know, respond to that? Yeah. That's tough.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's pretty tough. Well, there's a little bit. Lex just turned around and walked into the darkness. and I haven't seen or heard from him since. I guess I unlocked a secret hack in the game of life. I hope you all enjoyed this story as much as I do. The end.
Wait, it doesn't even sound like you would be friends. It sounded like you were just doing this out of the kindness of your heart. I know we didn't reach out, but you guys aren't friends at that point. Wait, wait, like when they're hanging out?
Yeah.
She said, oh, we could be friends. And you didn't reach back out or try to reach out after that?
Well, they didn't know they were hanging out.
Hanging out, but this is where the friendship ends. And my friend of like two years does something like that.
I'm reaching out.
We're still friends.
Well, I don't think he wanted to be friends. I think he wanted a relationship.
Right. You're saying like, okay, she gets with another guy and then he's out.
Oh, I was just trying to say it doesn't seem like. she was being friends. She was just being friends. So she didn't, wasn't the villain.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Being friends because he wanted.
To get back together.
Yeah.
So no one really wanted to. So it's sort of a quote unquote friendship. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I see.
Yeah. But that's the end of that story.
Oh my gosh.
That's it. Man. Heart goes out.
I know.
To be stranded at an airport.
Yeah.
Yeah and just like i've been i've been like stuck at airports for a while just.
Like not because not lost.
No not lost but like waiting for a flight like waiting to be like i was i went to guatemala recently and i we were trying to get like a ride out to because we're going to antigua which is like two hours away okay and we were arrived at 6 a.m and we were trying to get a car to come earlier because we didn't expect to get there so early yeah and we had to wait like an hour and it was kind of they tell you like like don't go outside in that area because it's not like super safe and so we're stuck in the airport and there was no food and.
We're so tired no how was it overall though it was a great trip yeah it was so fun yeah oh my gosh so we were fine after that yeah it took like an hour for the the bus to come okay okay not not terrible yeah yeah.
Hey, it's Dakota, your favorite good time boy host here. We're going to get back to the stories, but here's three minutes of ads from our sponsors.
My daughter destroyed her mother's treasured wedding dress and had no remorse about it.
Oh, your treasures are mine, mine to burn.
My wife made her wedding dress with her mother. It's very sentimental to her, and she was very proud of it. It was simple, but frickin' gorgeous. She has always said she would love for our kids to wear her dress at their wedding. We had three daughters, 34, 30, 25, and one son, 28. My wife made it known that the dress was not to be altered except to be taken in slash let out so it could be kept and reworn. Our youngest daughter didn't wear it. Our daughter-in-law wore it for their reception and our son held it up against him for some pre-wedding bridal pictures so he wasn't left out. He totally rocked it. Oldest daughter wore it for her wedding. We've offered some financial contributions to all our children towards either school, a wedding, or a
house down payment. Olivia has asked for help paying for her wedding. The wedding is in the beginning of August. A few months ago, Olivia asked my wife if she could use the dress for her wedding, and my wife gave her the dress so Olivia could get it fitted with plenty of time. Tuesday, Olivia asked me to go with her to pay some vendors. One of the stops was the tailor shop for a final fitting and to pay the seamstress. Olivia was really nervous and I figured it was just usual pre-wedding jitters and excitement. The dress Olivia came out in was not at all her mother's dress.
It was a completely different dress with parts of her mother's gown added to it. By the way, this comes from TRA Dress Distress. And if you want to submit your own stories, go to the r slash OK Storytime subreddit. She took the straps, the sash, the train, and the embroidered top skirt and had it added to this new dress.
Dang, she literally systematically disassembled the dress and just added it to a different one.
That's crazy.
I was befuddled for a bit and then asked what the heck this was. Olivia's reasoning was that she was the last of our kids to get married and there wasn't anyone else to wear it, and she made sure to instruct they keep the original dress to be returned to her. I told her that's not the same, she knows it, and the dress was never hers to do with what she wanted. I asked the seamstress for the rest of my wife's dress and had Olivia tell my wife in person what she had done. My wife was devastated.
I have since canceled the payments I made that day and told her I won't be paying another cent to her wedding. She and her fiance can figure it out.
Yeah, I mean, yes, that is what you do now. That's crazy.
Like, I get it, but oh, it's like, who cares if.
Nobody ever wore it again? The whole point was that it was her wedding dress. She just wanted to have it. She wanted to have it to look at it.
Go.
That was my wedding dress.
And also it took her so much time and energy and money to do that and have this like thing to share with everyone.
Oh, dang.
I mean, what was her issue? She just didn't like how it looked. Just then just don't wear it. One of the people in the story, one of the daughters didn't wear it. So it's not like they were forcing you. They were like, yeah, you can if you want. Some of them wore it for the wedding. Some of them wore it for the reception. Others didn't even wear it.
We're probably going to find out.
Our youngest daughter thinks I've gone overboard knowing Olivia planned her wedding with our help in mind and without it. She can't finish paying for everything. Olivia's future in-laws also agree with that. They can't afford to help and suggested I should pay. And then we just go low contact with Olivia. I've told them both that Olivia took something irreplaceable from her mother for her own vanity. I know we originally offered help with the wedding, but I think Olivia's actions weren't canceling that offer.
Am I the a-hole?
Yeah, guess what?
People get married without big budgets all the time.
Oops.
Oh, you did a thing that made your parents revoke their financial support for your wedding? Time to pivot and figure out what works. You already got the dress. That's not changing.
Congratulations. Now you have to pivot.
It's so sad that she did that. I wonder why she did it. I would want to hear her explanation.
Because I'm thinking like, oh, maybe, you know, maybe like it didn't really look that great.
But that's the thing. She didn't have to wear it, though. Like, I think she wanted it, but she didn't want that. But then you just ruined it. I don't know. So weird.
It probably looks bad, too. They just took pieces off of it and put it on a different dress.
There's an edit. Thank you, everyone, for the responses.
My wife and I will look at more of them tomorrow and discuss the subject further. Just want to address a misconception. We have not gone low or no contact with Olivia. Her in-laws suggested it, and that is insane. My wife's initial reaction to finding out Tuesday was to not go to the wedding. That was said in anger and not a done deal. It'd probably depend a lot on Olivia's handling until then as well. Taking her dress she paid for would hurt our relationship with her just as much as not paying for anything else, which is why we are discussing our options in skimming comments for things we have not thought of and are doable.
And there is an update. What do we think?
Maybe she, maybe you can rebuild it. Maybe you can put the pieces back, because didn't she make the dress?
What, like a bionicle?
I mean, yeah, like the mom made the dress, but what the seamstress did was like take parts of it and then like put it on a new dress and then like kind of frame it to look like it all went together.
It's probably impossible.
It's probably impossible to fix.
And it wouldn't look the same. That's the thing.
Yeah, I don't know. I wouldn't support this at all. I'd be like, that was one of the most.
unbelievably selfish things you could have done and we're not going to support your wedding financially anymore.
And i guarantee you i hope not but she's like i don't care yeah.
She'll be like how could my parents do this to me it's like no dummy you did this to you on to.
The update my wife and i are reading as many comments as we can she appreciates the concern and support For those saying the dress wouldn't be worn again anyway, she has this to say. It's not about whether or not it would be worn again. If none of my children asked to wear it, I still would keep the dress for me. My mother taught me everything I know about sewing. We spent months picking out fabrics and doing trial and error on practice dresses as we made mine.
It was mine.
It was my one prized possession that held incredible memories for me. I have thought of having it put in my casket with me because once I'm gone, The person it mattered to is gone. However, I would have worn it again. Our 40th anniversary is in a couple years and I was very much looking forward to recreating our photos.
It may seem like I'm choosing my dress over my daughter.
I'm not.
It is her deceit, indifference, and her blatant lack of remorse that I am hurt most by and having a hard time with. It is the underhanded way she thought to address the issue. It is the fact she will not apologize and have a conversation with me but is only worried about the rest of her wedding items being paid for and pinning it until after her honeymoon. I did not raise her to be like that. I would have loved to help her make decisions for the dress she picked out if she had asked, and she knows this.
I have never denied her help in her life, nor has her help come with conditions. Today we'll take my wife's dress to the seamstress that has the frankendress to see what can be repaired. My wife has said the sash and train are most likely lost as the fabric of the gown was cut and the seams undone properly.
Paraphrasing here, not up on sewing lingo. Unfortunately, even if it can be restored or parts of it, Olivia is currently not wanting to give up the dress after the wedding. She wants to keep hers and is imploring her mother to understand since she kept her wedding dress for so long.
But sweetie pie, no one else is going to wear that anymore, so you don't need it. I'm going to wear my dress for my party, so I need your dress and I'm going.
To Frankenstein it, okay? These are your rules that you made.
We don't want to lose our relationship with our daughter, but we both agree there needs to be consequences and there isn't really any moving forward if Olivia isn't willing to budge on anything.
Oh, update two.
After posting, my wife went to the seamstress's shop and had the pieces of her dress removed since Olivia refused to have them taken off and returned after the wedding. This caused an upset with her daughter when she found out. Our future son-in-law came to talk to us afterwards to get our side of the story. Regrettably, Olivia was not honest with him about the situation and had told him my wife was upset that Olivia took too many parts off the dress.
He was not aware. She lied.
To get the dress in the first place and was avoiding her mother. As it turned out, he got involved after two of her bridesmaids dropped out at the same time. And he was getting conflicting stories from her and them. Olivia had used their phones to cancel plans with their respective boyfriends so they could be free for last minute plans Olivia made for her bridesmaids.
That's like, yeah, you're crazy and I don't even want to be friends with you anymore. That's psycho.
There has to be another story on Reddit with their like, uh, this happened.
According to Olivia's friends, her personality has changed over the last few years when she got a promotion at work and had an assistant and a team working under her. A week and a half before the wedding, son-in-law asked if they could come over. He got Olivia to talk to her mother and she apologized. She explained why she did what she did. She wanted similar pieces on her dress, but the cost was going to be too much. It was cheaper to add parts. Olivia has said she feels a need to keep up with some of the other women she works with and has a hard time shutting that personality off. She has started therapy and will be changing jobs to a different company.
There's a little bit left. I mean, I don't know.
I pass a new law. You're never allowed to take off that dress, Olivia. Have fun. Have fun living in your dress.
Yeah, I don't know.
I've I feel like she definitely does need some therapy to realize. I feel like she's very much in a different mind space. And this job has definitely affected her in more ways than one. And has gotten out of control now to where it's causing issues between her different relationships in her life.
That's not cool.
And everyone is noticing it. So there is an issue.
You are the issue.
We did not pay more towards the wedding. They agreed to have the catering they could afford on their own and families potlucking the rest. They also came up with a solution for music and decorations. This way, my wife can get what she needs to repair her dress the best she can. The parts that are not able to be put back on her dress, my wife is using them to make photo album covers for each of our kids.
That's so sweet. Okay, this mom has great ideas. I love her DIY brain.
And you know, yeah, Audrey and TikTok says the sad thing is if she just asked her mom to make something similar, she would have done that.
As for Olivia's dress, my wife spent the time leading up to the wedding making new pieces and attached them to Olivia's dress herself. It'll be a while before we trust our daughter again like we used to, but we are on the road to recovery. The wedding was a lot of fun, and Olivia and our newest family members seem to really enjoy themselves.
Thanks again, everyone, for the support. Oh, there are some comments.
Comment number one says, hmm, I'm surprised son-in-law went ahead with the wedding after being deceived like that.
But good luck to you all.
I mean, kind of.
I am, too.
But maybe he just was like, ah, yeah.
Bro, honestly, no way.
I'm not cutting things off with my fiance, my wife-to-be in like a month just because she did some tomfoolery with a dress.
No.
Leave me out of that. I'm not even involved. You're my wife.
I don't care. Figure it out.
You did something wrong.
OP responds, confronting the people she wronged, therapy, and job change were conditions of their relationship continuing. My first thought when he called to come over was they were going to say it had been postponed or canceled.
But it wasn't.
Uh-oh.
Maybe divorce soon. Maybe a nice little divorce. Get a little divorce dress. Start making a divorce dress for your daughter who's going to get divorced soon.
